An all-fiber dual Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on an acoustically modulated hollow-core fiber (HCF) is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. By attaching an acoustic driver in between the fixed ends of an HCF, we fabricated two acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) with distinct driver positions, allowing for synchronizing two in-line MZIs inside the HCF. The first MZI is set by two acoustic long-period gratings separated by a second MZI formed at the fiber and driver attaching region. We show that this setup enables frequency-tuning of the coupling between the fundamental and higher-order modes in the HCF. Additionally, we simulate and analyze the HCF modal couplings and MZIs' modulated spectra under distinct device parameters using the transfer matrix method. The new AOM-MZI enables tuning of the MZIs free spectral range by adjusting 1 Hz of the electrical frequency, which is promising to modulate multiwavelength filters, sensors and fiber lasers.

We have previously described the reformed introductory physics course, Collaborative Learning through Active Sense-Making in Physics (CLASP), for bioscience students at a large public research one university (Original University) and presented evidence that the course was more successful and more equitable than the course it replaced by several measures. Now we compare the original success of CLASP with an implementation at a second institution. We find that the original results hold at another institution despite some changes to the original curriculum and a somewhat different student population. We find that students who take CLASP are 1) less likely to drop, 2) less likely to fail, and 3) do as well in later coursework when compared to students who took the courses that CLASP replaced, even if that coursework is not similarly reformed. We find the above items to be independently true for historically marginalized students and remarkably, also find that 4) marginalized students who take CLASP are more likely to graduate from a STEM field. We use a course deficit model perspective to examine these results, and discuss some of the factors that may have contributed to this success. We argue that higher education has the tools they need to significantly increase equity, and improve student success and retention.

We demonstrate the acousto-optic modulation of a hybrid-lattice hollow core fiber (HL-HCF) for the first time. For many years, optical fibers with reduced diameters have been the main solution to increase the interaction of acoustic and optical waves. However, the high drive voltages and large modulator components still employed drastically affect the efficiency and miniaturization of these devices. Here, we experimentally show that combining Kagom\'e and tubular lattices in HL-HCFs allows for enhancing the amplification of the acoustic waves and the modulation of the guided optical modes thus providing high modulation efficiency even when using a fiber with a 240 um diameter. To the best of our knowledge, the measured HL-HCF's modulation efficiency (1.3 dB/V) is the highest compared to devices employing reduced diameter fibers. Additionally, we demonstrate a compact acousto-optic modulator with driver dimensions smaller than the HL-HCF diameter. Overall, our results show a promising alternative to solve the compromise of speed, efficiency, and compactness for integration with microscale all-fiber photonic devices.

The modulation efficiency of a tubular-lattice hollow-core fiber (HCF) by means of flexural acoustic waves is investigated in detail for the first time. The main acousto-optic properties of the HCF are evaluated employing 2D and 3D models based on the finite element method. The induced coupling of the fundamental and first higher-order modes is simulated in the wavelength range from 743 to 1355 nm. Significant acoustic (amplitude, period, strain, energy) and optical parameters (effective index, beat length, birefringence, coupling coefficient) are analyzed. The simulations are compared to experimental results, indicating higher modulation performance in HCFs compared to standard optical fibers. In addition, useful insights into the design and fabrication of all-fiber acousto-optic devices based on HCFs are provided, enabling potential application in tunable spectral filters and mode-locked fiber lasers.

We demonstrate a broadband acousto-optic notch filter based on a tubular-lattice hollow-core fiber for the first time. The guided optical modes are modulated by acoustically induced dynamic long-period gratings along the fiber. The device is fabricated employing a short interaction length (7.7 cm) and low drive voltages (10 V). Modulated spectral bands with 20 nm half-width and maximum depths greater than 60 % are achieved. The resonant notch wavelength is tuned from 743 to 1355 nm (612 nm span) by changing the frequency of the electrical signal. The results indicate a broader tuning range compared to previous studies using standard and hollow-core fibers. It further reveals unique properties for reconfigurable spectral filters and fiber lasers, pointing to the fast switching and highly efficient modulation of all-fiber photonic devices.

A current sheet (CS) is the central structure in the disrupting magnetic configuration during solar eruptions. More than 90\% of the free magnetic energy (the difference between the energy in the non-potential magnetic field and that in the potential one) stored in the coronal magnetic field beforehand is converted into heating and kinetic energy of the plasma, as well as accelerating charged particles, by magnetic reconnection occurring in the CS. However, the detailed physical properties and fine structures of the CS are still unknown since there is no relevant information obtained via in situ detections. The Parker Solar Probe (PSP) may provide us such information should it traverse a CS in the eruption. The perihelion of PSP's final orbit is located at about 10 solar radii from the center of the Sun, so it can observe the CS at a very close distance, or even traverses the CS, which provides us a unique opportunity to look into fine properties and structures of the CS, helping reveal the detailed physics of large-scale reconnection that was impossible before. Automatic analysis of customer data for businesses is an area that is of interest to companies. Business to business data is studied rarely in academia due to the sensitive nature of such information. Applying natural language processing can speed up the analysis of prohibitively large sets of data. This paper addresses this subject and applies sentiment analysis, topic modelling and keyword extraction to a B2B data set. We show that accurate sentiment can be extracted from the notes automatically and the notes can be sorted by relevance into different topics. We see that without clear separation topics can lack relevance to a business context.

We add to a growing literature suggesting that demographic grade gaps should be attributed to biases embedded in the courses themselves. Changes in the structure of two different introductory physics classes were made while leaving the topics covered and the level of coverage unchanged. First, a class where conceptual issues were studied before doing any complicated calculations had zero final exam grade gap between students from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups and their peers. Next, four classes that offered students a retake exam each week between the regular bi-weekly exams during the term had zero gender gap in course grades. Our analysis indicates that demographic grade gaps can be attributed to the course structure (a Course Deficit Model) rather than to student preparation (a Student Deficit Model)., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

We prove various results connected together by the common thread of computability theory. First, we investigate a new notion of algorithmic dimension, the inescapable dimension, which lies between the effective Hausdorff and packing dimensions. We also study its generalizations, obtaining an embedding of the Turing degrees into notions of dimension. We then investigate a new notion of computability theoretic immunity that arose in the course of the previous study, that of a set of natural numbers with no co-enumerable subsets. We demonstrate how this notion of $\Pi^0_1$-immunity is connected to other immunity notions, and construct $\Pi^0_1$-immune reals throughout the high/low and Ershov hierarchies. We also study those degrees that cannot compute or cannot co-enumerate a $\Pi^0_1$-immune set. Finally, we discuss a recently discovered truth-table reduction for transforming a Kolmogorov--Loveland random input into a Martin-L\"of random output by exploiting the fact that at least one half of such a KL-random is itself ML-random. We show that there is no better algorithm relying on this fact, i.e., there is no positive, linear, or bounded truth-table reduction which does this. This study examined outcomes for AP® Calculus and AP Physics students on the 2015 Trends in International Math and Science Study (TIMSS) relative to other participating countries and other advanced math and science students in the United States. Compared to other countries in the study, AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C: EM students outperformed all participating education systems and other AP groups. Data also show that higher percentages of AP Calculus and Physics students reached international benchmarks, earned higher average content domain scores, and spent more time engaged in math and science than other advanced math and science students in the U.S. who did not take AP.

While it is not known whether each real that is Kolmogorov-Loveland random is Martin-L\"of random, i.e., whether $\mathrm{KLR}\subseteq\mathrm{MLR}$, Kjos-Hanssen and Webb (2021) showed that $\mathrm{MLR}$ is truth-table Medvedev reducible ($\le_{s,tt}$) to $\mathrm{KLR}$. They did this by studying a natural class Either(MLR) and showing that $\mathrm{MLR}\le_{s,tt}\mathrm{Either(MLR)}\supseteq\mathrm{KLR}$. We show that Degtev's stronger reducibilities (positive and linear) do not suffice for the reduction of MLR to Either(MLR), and some related results.

In previous work we analyzed databases for 95 classes to show that the percent grade scale was correlated with a much higher student fail rate than the 4.0 grade scale. This paper builds on this work and investigates equity gaps occurring under both scales. By employing a "Course Deficit Model" we attribute the responsibility for closing the gaps to those who are responsible for the policies that guide the course. When comparing course grades in classes graded using the percent scale with those in courses graded using the 4.0 scale, we find that students identifying as belonging to racial or ethnic minorities underrepresented in physics suffer a grade penalty under both grade scales but suffer an extra penalty under percent scale graded courses. We then use the fraction of A grades each student earns on individual exam items as a proxy for the instructor's perception of each student's understanding of the course material to control for student understanding and find that the extra grade penalty students from groups underrepresented in physics students suffer under percent scale grading is independent of the student's understanding of physics. When we control for more student level variables to determine the source of the grade scale dependent penalty, we find that it is primarily the low F grades (partial credit scores) on exam problems that are the source of these inequities. We present an argument that switching from percent scale grading to a 4.0 grade scale (or similar grades scale) could reduce equity gaps by 20-25\% without making any other course changes or controlling for any incoming differences between students., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

This addendum shows that a demographic grade gap is best understood using a course deficit model rather than the more common student deficit model. Students from a concepts-first class took the same final exam as the three other classes that were offered at the same time so the grade gaps between different demographic groups from each class can be compared. It is found that students identifying as members of a racial/ethnic group underrepresented in physics had higher final exam grades than their peers from the same concepts first class rather than the usual case, lower exam grades than their peers, found in each of the other three classes. After controlling for demonstrated incoming understanding of calculus and Newtonian mechanics this demographic gap in the concepts first class is found to differ from that of the other three classes by over four standard errors. In addition, it's noted that while students' incoming understandings are useful in explaining within-group differences they do not explain between-group differences suggesting that a student deficit model does not explain (between-group) demographic grade gaps.

We show that the (truth-table) Medvedev degree KLR of Kolmogorov--Loveland randomness coincides with that of Martin L\"of randomness, MLR, answering a question of Miyabe. Next, an analogue of complex packing dimension is studied which gives rise to a set of weak truth-table Medvedev degrees isomorphic to the Turing degrees.

Evidence is presented that offering introductory physics courses with an explicit focus on mastery can reduce the gender gap to zero. Taken together with a previous study showing that a concepts-first course may zero out another demographic gap leads one to speculate that demographic grade gaps in introductory physics are just artifacts of the design of the courses and that none of these classes/grades should be assumed to be demographically neutral.

Launching a starshade to rendezvous with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope would provide the first opportunity to directly image the habitable zones of nearby sunlike stars in the coming decade. A report on the science and feasibility of such a mission was recently submitted to NASA as a probe study concept. The driving objective of the concept is to determine whether Earth-like exoplanets exist in the habitable zones of the nearest sunlike stars and have biosignature gases in their atmospheres. With the sensitivity provided by this telescope, it is possible to measure the brightness of zodiacal dust disks around the nearest sunlike stars and establish how their population compares to our own. In addition, known gas-giant exoplanets can be targeted to measure their atmospheric metallicity and thereby determine if the correlation with planet mass follows the trend observed in the Solar System and hinted at by exoplanet transit spectroscopy data. In this paper we provide the details of the calculations used to estimate the sensitivity of Roman with a starshade and describe the publicly available Python-based source code used to make these calculations. Given the fixed capability of Roman and the constrained observing windows inherent for the starshade, we calculate the sensitivity of the combined observatory to detect these three types of targets and we present an overall observing strategy that enables us to achieve these objectives., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS)

This review article summarizes the advancement in the studies of Earth-affecting solar transients in the last decade that encompasses most of solar cycle 24. The Sun Earth is an integrated physical system in which the space environment of the Earth sustains continuous influence from mass, magnetic field and radiation energy output of the Sun in varying time scales from minutes to millennium. This article addresses short time scale events, from minutes to days that directly cause transient disturbances in the Earth space environment and generate intense adverse effects on advanced technological systems of human society. Such transient events largely fall into the following four types: (1) solar flares, (2) coronal mass ejections (CMEs) including their interplanetary counterparts ICMEs, (3) solar energetic particle (SEP) events, and (4) stream interaction regions (SIRs) including corotating interaction regions (CIRs). In the last decade, the unprecedented multi viewpoint observations of the Sun from space, enabled by STEREO Ahead/Behind spacecraft in combination with a suite of observatories along the Sun-Earth lines, have provided much more accurate and global measurements of the size, speed, propagation direction and morphology of CMEs in both 3-D and over a large volume in the heliosphere. Several advanced MHD models have been developed to simulate realistic CME events from the initiation on the Sun until their arrival at 1 AU. Much progress has been made on detailed kinematic and dynamic behaviors of CMEs, including non-radial motion, rotation and deformation of CMEs, CME-CME interaction, and stealth CMEs and problematic ICMEs. The main result of this paper is that one cannot hear orientability of a surface with boundary. More precisely, we construct two isospectral flat surfaces with boundary with the same Neumann spectrum, one orientable, the other non-orientable. For this purpose, we apply Sunada's and Buser's methods in the framework of orbifolds. Choosing a symmetric tile in our construction, and adapting a folklore argument of Fefferman, we also show that the surfaces have different Dirichlet spectra. The Habitable Exoplanet Observatory, or HabEx, has been designed to be the Great Observatory of the 2030s. For the first time in human history, technologies have matured sufficiently to enable an affordable space-based telescope mission capable of discovering and characterizing Earthlike planets orbiting nearby bright sunlike stars in order to search for signs of habitability and biosignatures. Such a mission can also be equipped with instrumentation that will enable broad and exciting general astrophysics and planetary science not possible from current or planned facilities. HabEx is a space telescope with unique imaging and multi-object spectroscopic capabilities at wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to near-IR. These capabilities allow for a broad suite of compelling science that cuts across the entire NASA astrophysics portfolio. HabEx has three primary science goals: (1) Seek out nearby worlds and explore their habitability; (2) Map out nearby planetary systems and understand the diversity of the worlds they contain; (3) Enable new explorations of astrophysical systems from our own solar system to external galaxies by extending our reach in the UV through near-IR. This Great Observatory science will be selected through a competed GO program, and will account for about 50% of the HabEx primary mission. The preferred HabEx architecture is a 4m, monolithic, off-axis telescope that is diffraction-limited at 0.4 microns and is in an L2 orbit. In deciding on a student's grade in a class, an instructor generally needs to combine many individual grading judgments into one overall judgment. Two relatively common numerical scales used to specify individual grades are the 4-point scale (where each whole number 0-4 corresponds to a letter grade) and the percent scale (where letter grades A through D are uniformly distributed in the top 40% of the scale). This paper uses grading data from a single series of courses offered over a period of 10 years to show that the grade distributions emerging from these two grade scales differed in many ways from each other. Evidence suggests that the differences are due more to the grade scale than to either the students or the instructors. One major difference is that the fraction of students given grades less than C- was over 5 times larger when instructors used the percent scale. The fact that each instructor who used both grade scales gave more than 4 times as many of these low grades under percent scale grading suggests that the effect is due to the grade scale rather than the instructor. When the percent scale was first introduced in these courses in 2006, one of the authors of this paper, who is also one of the instructors in this data set, had confidently predicted that any changes in course grading would be negligible. They were not negligible, even for this instructor.

Over the past decades and even centuries, the astronomical community has accumulated a signif-icant heritage of recorded observations of a great many astronomical objects. Those records con-tain irreplaceable information about long-term evolutionary and non-evolutionary changes in our Universe, and their preservation and digitization is vital. Unfortunately, most of those data risk becoming degraded and thence totally lost. We hereby call upon the astronomical community and US funding agencies to recognize the gravity of the situation, and to commit to an interna-tional preservation and digitization efforts through comprehensive long-term planning supported by adequate resources, prioritizing where the expected scientific gains, vulnerability of the origi-nals and availability of relevant infrastructure so dictates. The importance and urgency of this issue has been recognized recently by General Assembly XXX of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in its Resolution B3: "on preservation, digitization and scientific exploration of his-torical astronomical data". For the first time in human history, technologies have matured sufficiently to enable a mission capable of discovering and characterizing habitable planets like Earth orbiting sunlike stars other than the Sun. At the same time, such a platform would enable unique science not possible from ground-based facilities. This science is broad and exciting, ranging from new investigations of our own solar system to a full range of astrophysics disciplines. The Habitable Exoplanet Observatory, or HabEx, is one of four studies currently being undertaken by NASA in preparation for the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey. HabEx has been designed to be the Great Observatory of the 2030s, with community involvement through a competed and funded Guest Observer (GO) program. This interim report describes the HabEx baseline concept, which is a space-based 4-meter diameter telescope mission concept with ultraviolet (UV), optical, and near-infrared (near-IR) imaging and spectroscopy capabilities. The effect of class size on student learning has numerous policy implications and has been a major subject of conversation and research for decades. Despite this, few studies have been done on class size in the context of university settings or physics courses. After discussing some of the reasoning behind hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) as well as how to interpret the results of an HLM analysis while grounding this study in measurement theory as it applies to course grades, this paper goes on to examine the effect of class size in active-learning based introductory physics courses using a series of hierarchical linear models. It is found that class size over the ranges studied does not have a significant effect on student grades which were used as a proxy for student understanding of the underlying material. However, a variety of issues and limitations means this is certainly not the end of the story and there is still much to be done and discussed when it comes to these courses and the various factors which affect student achievement in them, both theoretically and empirically., Comment: 29 pages

We use two of the most fruitful methods for constructing isospectral manifolds, the Sunada method and the torus action method, to construct manifolds whose Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators are isospectral at all frequencies. The manifolds are also isospectral for the Robin boundary value problem for all choices of Robin parameter. As in the sloshing problem, we can also impose mixed Dirichlet-Neumann conditions on parts of the boundary. Among the examples we exhibit are Steklov isospectral flat surfaces with boundary, planar domains with isospectral sloshing problems, and Steklov isospectral metrics on balls of any dimension greater than 5. In particular, the latter are the first examples of Steklov isospectral manifolds of dimension greater than 2 that have connected boundaries., Comment: 16 pages

In 1964 (Solar Cycle 20; SC 20), Patrick McIntosh began creating hand-drawn synoptic maps of solar magnetic features, based on H$\alpha$ images. These synoptic maps were unique in that they traced magnetic polarity inversion lines, and connected widely separated filaments, fibril patterns, and plage corridors to reveal the large-scale organization of the solar magnetic field. Coronal hole boundaries were later added to the maps, which were produced, more or less continuously, into 2009 (i.e., the start of SC 24). The result was a record of $\sim45$ years ($\sim570$ Carrington rotations), or nearly four complete solar cycles of synoptic maps. We are currently scanning, digitizing and archiving these maps, with the final, searchable versions publicly available at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information. In this paper we present preliminary scientific studies using the archived maps from SC 23. We show the global evolution of closed magnetic structures (e.g., sunspots, plage, and filaments) in relation to open magnetic structures (e.g., coronal holes), and examine how both relate to the shifting patterns of large-scale positive and negative polarity regions.

When assessing student work, graders will often find that some students will leave one or more problems blank on assessments. Since there is no work shown, the grader has no means to evaluate the student's understanding of a particular problem, and thus awards 'zero' points. This practice punishes the student behavior of leaving a problem blank, but this zero is not necessarily an accurate assessment of student understanding of a particular topic. While some might argue that this practice is 'fair' in that students are aware that they can't receive points for problems they don't attempt, we share evidence that this practice unequally impacts different student groups. We analyze 10 years of UC Davis introductory physics course databases to show that different groups of students (by gender, racial/ethnic group, first generation, etc.) skip problems, and entire exams at different rates. We also share some implications for grading and teaching practices.

We present a comprehensive analysis of a particular class of coronal mass ejection (CME) event, called streamer-blowout CME (SBOs). The events are characterized by a gradual swelling of the overlying streamer, lasting hours to days, followed by a slow, wide CME, generally exhibiting a 3-part structure, which leaves the streamer significantly depleted in its wake. We identify 909 SBO events in the LASCO/C2 observations between 1996 and 2015. The average blowout lasts for 40.5 hours but the evacuation can take days for some events. SBO-CMEs are wider and more massive than the average CME. Their properties generally vary during and between solar cycles. Their minimum (maximum) monthly occurrence rate of one (six) events in cycle 23 has doubled in cycle 24---a probable manifestation of the weaker global fields in the current cycle. The locations of SBOs follow the tilt of the global dipole (but not from 2014 onwards), do not correlate with sunspot numbers and exhibit flux rope morphology at a much higher rate (61%) than regular CMEs (40%). We propose that these characteristics are consistent with SBOs arising from extended polarity inversion lines outside active regions (e.g. quiet sun and polar crown filaments) through the release, via reconnection, of magnetic energy, likely accumulated via differential rotation., Comment: 21 pages. 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal
