Recent experiments and calculations in topological semimetals have observed anomalously strong second-order optical nonlinearity, but yet whether the enhancement also occurs at surfaces of topological semimetals in general remains an open question. In this work, we tackle this problem by measuring polarization-dependent and rotational-anisotropy optical second harmonic generation (SHG) from centrosymmetric type-II Dirac semimetal PdTe$_2$. We found the SHG to follow C$_{3v}$ surface symmetry with a time-varying intensity dictated by the oxidation kinetics of the material after its surface cleavage, indicating the surface origin of SHG. Quantitative characterization of the surface nonlinear susceptibility indicates a large out-of-plane response of PdTe$_2$ with $|\chi_{ccc}^{(2)}|$ up to 25 $\times$ 10$^{-18}$ m$^2$/V. Our results support the topological surfaces/interfaces as a new route toward applications of nonlinear optical effects with released symmetry constraints, and demonstrate SHG as a viable means to in situ study of kinetics of topological surfaces.

Interface-specific hydrogen- (H-)bonding network of water next to a substrate (including air) directly controls the energy transfer and chemical reaction pathway at many charged aqueous interfaces. Yet, experimental characterization of such bonded water layer structure is still a challenge due to the presence of the ion diffuse layer. We now develop a sum-frequency (SF) spectroscopic scheme with varying photon momentums as an all-optic solution for retrieving the vibrational spectra of the bonded water layer and the diffuse layer, and hence microscopic structural and charging information about an interface. Application of the method to a charged surfactant-water interface reveals a hidden weakly-donor-H-bonded water species, suggesting an asymmetric hydration-shell structure of fully solvated surfactant headgroups. In another application to a zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine (PC) lipid monolayer-water interface, we find a highly polarized bonded water layer structure associating to the PC headgroup, while the diffuse layer contribution is experimentally proven to be negligible. Our all-optic method offers not only an in situ microscopic probe of the electrochemical and biological interfaces, but also a new opportunity for promoting these researches toward high spatial and temporal resolutions.

Protons at the water/vapor interface are relevant for atmospheric and environmental processes, yet to characterize their surface affinity on the quantitative level is still challenging. Here we utilize phase-sensitive sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy to quantify the surface density of protons (or their hydronium form) at the intrinsic water/vapor interface, through inspecting the surface-field-induced alignment of water molecules in the electrical double layer of ions. With hydrogen halides in water, the surface adsorption of protons is found to be independent of specific proton-halide anion interactions and to follow a constant adsorption free energy, G about -3.74 (+/-0.56) kJ/mol, corresponding to a reduction of the surface pH with respect to the bulk value by 0.66 (+/-0.10), for bulk ion concentrations up to 0.3 M. We develop and verify a phase-sensitive second harmonic generation spectroscopic scheme that allows for direct determination of the absolute surface charge density and surface potential of a water interface without need of prior interfacial information. The method relies on selective probing of surface-field-induced reorientation order of water molecules in the electrical double layer and is, hence, independent of the interfacial molecular bonding structure. Application of this technique to a mixed surfactant monolayer on water suggests the manifest effect of the chain-chain interactions among the monolayer on adsorption of soluble ionic surfactants. We also deduce the third-order nonlinear susceptibility of bulk water and prove its applicability to analysis of charges of various water interfaces. We utilize ultrafast optical measurement to study the quasiparticle relaxation in stoichiometric LiFeAs and nearly optimally doped (BaK)Fe2As2 crystals. According to our temperature-dependent studies of LiFeAs, we have observed pseudogap-like feature at onset temperature of ~ 55 K, which is above Tc = 15 K. In addition, the onset temperature of pseudogap ~90K was also observed in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Tc = 36 K). Our findings seem implying that the pseudogap feature, which is due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations, is universal for the largely studied 11, 111, 122, and 1111 iron-based superconductors., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures
