This study aims to develop a truncated lognormal distribution model to predict work zone capacity. The distribution model parameters are formulated as linear functions of road type, number of closed lanes, number of opened lanes, lane closure location, work duration, work intensity, work time, heavy-vehicle percentage, and capacity measurement method. To reflect the uncertainty, a prediction band is constructed for the mean work zone capacity. The maximum likelihood estimation technique is used to determine the coefficients of the variables included in the probability distribution-based capacity model. The sensitivity analysis results confirm that the proposed model has the capability of accurately predicting the mean and prediction band of work zone capacity at any given confidence level. In addition, it is found that work zones located in urban roads, with a large number of opened lanes, low heavy-vehicle percentage, or long-term work duration, have larger mean work zone capacity. A work zone with the closure of the right lane has bigger variability of work zone capacity than a work zone with the left-lane closure. In addition, the measured work zone capacity is a little bigger if the hourly traffic volume converted from the maximum 3-/5-/15-minute flow rate is considered as the work zone capacity. The proposed probability distribution-based capacity model can help traffic engineers to evaluate the variability of work zone capacity and travel delay range. This study aims to develop work zone speed-flow and capacity models, which incorporate work zone configuration factors including the number of work zones, geometrical alignment, work zone speed limit, and work zone length. On the basis of the traffic data from six work zone sites with various work zone configurations, two nonlinear traffic speed and flow models including work zone configuration factors are developed for the uncongested and congested traffic conditions, respectively. A work zone capacity model is proposed on the basis of the two models. The three models can further be used to examine the effects of work zone configuration factors on the speed-flow relationship and capacity at work zones. Results show that traffic speed, traffic flow, and work zone capacity increase with the posted speed limit. Traffic speed under uncongested conditions decreases with the geometric alignment, the number of work zones, work zone length, and heavy vehicle percentage. Under congested conditions, the increase of the number of work zones is found to exhibit a larger negative impact on the traffic flow than the increase of geometric alignment. The number of work zones is also found to have the largest negative impacts on work zone capacity, followed by the geometric alignment. SUMMARY This paper proposed a methodology to estimate rear-end crash potential of the merging vehicles traveling in the merge lane, on the basis of the traffic data extracting from the available videotapes. First, we developed a binary logit model to identify drivers' merging behavior in the work zone merging area. Subsequently, the occurrence potential of rear-end crash based on time-to-collision was computed between the merging vehicle and its neighboring vehicles. The overall crash potential of the merging vehicle was finally determined. It was found that the crash potential decreases with the remaining distance to work zone. Moreover, there will be a rear-end crash potential of 4.0% if the merging vehicle fails to complete merging at the end of work zone merging area. If the merging vehicle takes an early merge, there will be a lower rear-end crash potential (1.2%). These findings suggest that we should encourage merging vehicles to take early merges for improving the traffic safety in the work zone merging areas. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. SUMMARY Roadside trees in Singapore are regularly trimmed for the purpose of traffic safety and roadside tree-trimming project is one typical type of short-term work zone projects. To implement such a short-term work zone project, contractors usually divide an entire work zone into multiple subwork zones with the uniform length. This paper aims to determine an optimal subwork zone strategy for the short-term work zone projects in four-lane two-way freeways with time window and uniform subwork zone length constraints. The deterministic queuing model is employed to estimate total user delay caused by the work zone project by taking into account variable traffic speeds. Based on the user delay estimations, this paper proceeds to build a minimization model subject to time window and uniform length constraints for the optimal subwork zone strategy problem. This paper also presents a variation of the minimization model to examine the impact of unequal subwork zone length constraint. Since these minimization models belong to the mixed-integer non-differentiable optimization problems, an iterative algorithm embedding with the genetic simulated annealing method is thus proposed to solve these models. • We conducted a quantitative analysis of intelligent SCA technology over the past 20 years using bibliometric methods and data portrait techniques and traced earlier literature for a systematic review. • We identified the hotspots and research frontiers of intelligent ship collision avoidance in maritime transportation. • We discussed the contributions, innovations, and trends of future research in intelligent ship collision avoidance. With the increasing promotion of digital technology, safety issues faced by rush ships in the maritime industry have once again received attention. Ship collision avoidance (SCA) is not only a hot topic in the shipping industry but also an eye-catching issue in the development of intelligent ships. This paper provides a bibliometric and systematic overview of the literature on SCA to assist researchers in understanding the frontiers and recent trends of SCA. Based on the bibliographic portrait, a classification and grading study was conducted on the literature to provide a systematic review of it. A screening process was conducted on 851 relevant articles related to SCA and published in 2004–2023 in the Web of Science (WoS) database, and 526 highly relevant and high-quality papers were selected. Then, CiteSpace, VOSviewer software, and data visualization techniques were used to conduct a bibliographic portrait analysis on the selected papers. The evidence from these systematic literature reviews revealed the close collaboration relationships among researchers, research institutions, and countries or regions in the field of SCA studying shortly. Furthermore, the frontiers of the research on SCA were focused on three aspects, i.e. research subjects, technological methods, and novel algorithms in intelligent SCA. COLREG is a problem that must be considered in intelligent SCA. The future trends in intelligent SCA were explored and SCA technology was introduced from artificial intelligence (AI) so as to meet the safety requirement of maritime autonomous surface ships. AI algorithms such as machine learning and deep learning are key technologies for SCA. This research provides a theoretical basis and implementation directions of the research on SCA. The hybrid encounters between traditional ships and intelligent ships, as well as multi-ship encounters in narrow waterways, will be the focal points of attention in the future. A comprehensive analysis of ship emissions is a key step towards taking effective strategies to mitigate air pollution. Based on the AIS data, the objective of this study is to estimate ship emissions with high-resolution (0.001° × 0.001°) in the Yangtze River estuary using the STEAM model. Effects of ship types, operating modes, discharge equipment, time and location on ship emissions are also examined in this study. Results reveal that the annual ship emissions for CO 2 , CO, HC, NO x and SO 2 in 2014 are 1.818 × 106 tons, 2.593 × 103 tons, 1.949 × 103 tons, 3.394 × 104 tons and 1.584 × 104 tons, respectively. Findings highlight that the majority of ship emissions are generated under the slow-steaming and normal cruising states. There exist strong temporal and spatial effects on ship emissions. Ship emissions are mainly distributed at the port areas, intersection areas and the north channel of the Yangtze River estuary. This study concludes with some future efforts and directions to mitigate ship emissions in this water area effectively (e.g., encouraging cargo ships to use the lower carbon fuels for propulsion, optimizing ship routes in the north channel and interactions of the Yangtze River estuary). With the merit on representing traffic conflict through examining the crash mechanism and causality proactively, crash surrogate measures have long been proposed and applied to evaluate the traffic safety. However, the driver’s Perception-Reaction Time (PRT), an important variable in crash mechanism, has not been considered widely into surrogate measures. In this regard, it is important to know how the PRT affects the performances of surrogate indicators. To this end, three widely used surrogate measures are firstly modified by involving the PRT into their crash mechanisms. Then, in order to examine the difference caused by the PRT, a comparative study is carried out on a freeway section of the Pacific Motorway, Australia. This result suggests that the surrogate indicators’ performances in representing rear-end crash risks are improved with the incorporating of the PRT for the investigated section. The number of vessel accidents is an important indicator for evaluating vessel traffic safety and the efficiency of the maritime management strategy. The aim of this work is to provide an efficient way to predict the number of vessel accidents in China. Firstly, to weaken the randomness of the vessel accident number time series, the gray processing operation is adopted to generate a new sequence with exponential and approximate exponential rules. In addition, an extended least-squares support vector machine (LSSVM) model is applied in the forecasting of the new sequence, in which the parameters of the LSSVM are optimized by an improved quantum-behaved particle swarm (IQPSO). The proposed method is applied in the forecasting of the number of vessel accidents in China, and the efficiency is shown by comparing the prediction results with GM (1, 1), PSO-LSSVM, and QPSO-LSSVM. Proper intersection sight distance can effectively lower the possibility of intersection accidents. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (2011) provide a series of recommended dimensions of intersection sight triangles for uncontrolled and stop/yield-controlled intersections. However, in reality, although the actual intersection design for unsignalized intersections satisfies the requirements of sight distance and clear sight triangle in American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' guideline, there are still a large number of crashes occurring at unsignalized intersections for drivers running stop/yield signs or failing to slow down. This paper presents a driving simulator study on pre-crash at intersections under three intersection field of view (IFOV) conditions. The aim was to explore whether better IFOVs at unsignalized intersections improve their emergent collision avoidance performance under an assumption of valid intersection sight distance design. The experimental results show drivers' ability to identify potential hazards to be significantly affected by their IFOVs. As drivers' IFOV improved, drivers were more likely to choose braking actions to avoid collisions. Better IFOVs were also associated with significant increases in brake time to intersection and significant reductions in deceleration rate and crash rate, thus leading to a lower risk of traffic crash involvement. The results indicate that providing a better IFOV for drivers at intersections should be encouraged in practical applications in order to improve drivers' crash avoidance capabilities.
