1. Unraveling Abnormal Thermal Quenching of Sub‐Gap Emission in β‐Ga2O3

Abstract

Abstract In this work, the optical transition of self‐trapped excitons (STEs) and the emergent green emission in β‐Ga2O3 samples with/without Sn impurities at various doping levels have been investigated via temperature‐ and power‐dependent photoluminescence. The ultraviolet (UV) emissions ≈ 3.40 eV unanimously exhibit an excitonic nature related to STEs and typical negative thermal quenching (NTQ) characters. The NTQ activation energy decreases from 103.56 to 42.37 meV with the increased electron concentration from 2.1 × 1016 to 6.7 × 1018 cm−3, indicative of the reduced energy barrier that electrons should overcome to form stable STEs due to the lift‐up of Fermi level. In comparison, the green emissions ≈ 2.35 eV with two quenching channels are observed only in samples with Sn impurities at cryogenic temperatures. One channel is the nsnp‐ns2 transition of Sn2+, the other is donor‐acceptor pair recombination via (2VGa‐Sni)2− complex, which is energetically favorable as evidenced by density functional theory calculations. The semi‐classical quantum theory models fitting proves the transition from green to UV emissions with elevated temperature. The enhanced STEs emission with distinguished NTQ effect strengthens evidence that the stable polarons inherently limit the transport of holes in Ga2O3, and also support the potential of Ga2O3 materials for the development of UV optoelectronics.

2. Toward stabilization of formamidinium lead iodide perovskites by defect control and composition engineering

Abstract

Abstract Phase instability poses a serious challenge to the commercialization of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3)-based solar cells and optoelectronic devices. Here, we combine density functional theory and machine learning molecular dynamics simulations, to investigate the mechanism driving the undesired α-δ phase transition of FAPbI3. Prevalent iodine vacancies and interstitials can significantly expedite the structural transition kinetics by inducing robust covalency during transition states. Extrinsically, the detrimental roles of atmospheric moisture and oxygen in degrading the FAPbI3 perovskite phase are also rationalized. Significantly, we discover the compositional design principles by categorizing that A-site engineering primarily governs thermodynamics, whereas B-site doping can effectively manipulate the kinetics of the phase transition in FAPbI3, highlighting lanthanide ions as promising B-site substitutes. A-B mixed doping emerges as an efficient strategy to synergistically stabilize α-FAPbI3, as experimentally demonstrated by substantially higher initial optoelectronic characteristics and significantly enhanced phase stability in Cs-Eu doped FAPbI3 as compared to its Cs-doped counterpart. This study provides scientific guidance for the design and optimization of long-term stable FAPbI3-based solar cells and other optoelectronic devices through defect control and synergetic composition engineering.

Besides the intrinsic properties, impurities induced from electrodes may significantly influence the device performance. Here, we systematically studied the stability, transition energy levels, and diffusion of impurities from the most commonly used electrodes (Au, Ag, Cu, graphite, and graphene) in CsSnBr3 based on density functional theory calculations. Our results reveal that, whereas graphite and graphene electrodes exhibit negligible influence on CsSnBr3 due to the relatively high formation energies for carbon impurities in CsSnBr3, atoms from the metal electrodes can effectively diffuse into CsSnBr3 along interstice and form electrically active impurities in CsSnBr3. Abstract

Titanium alloys are advanced lightweight materials, indispensable for many critical applications1,2. The mainstay of the titanium industry is the α–β titanium alloys, which are formulated through alloying additions that stabilize the α and β phases3–5. Our work focuses on harnessing two of the most powerful stabilizing elements and strengtheners for α–β titanium alloys, oxygen and iron1–5, which are readily abundant. However, the embrittling effect of oxygen6,7, described colloquially as ‘the kryptonite to titanium’8, and the microsegregation of iron9 have hindered their combination for the development of strong and ductile α–β titanium–oxygen–iron alloys. Here we integrate alloy design with additive manufacturing (AM) process design to demonstrate a series of titanium–oxygen–iron compositions that exhibit outstanding tensile properties. We explain the atomic-scale origins of these properties using various characterization techniques. The abundance of oxygen and iron and the process simplicity for net-shape or near-net-shape manufacturing by AM make these α–β titanium–oxygen–iron alloys attractive for a diverse range of applications. Furthermore, they offer promise for industrial-scale use of off-grade sponge titanium or sponge titanium–oxygen–iron10,11, an industrial waste product at present. The economic and environmental potential to reduce the carbon footprint of the energy-intensive sponge titanium production12 is substantial.

Abstract

Here, the segregation and accumulation of hydrogen in Ni grain boundaries, and its effects on cohesion and tensile mechanical strength were studied by means of density functional theory simulations. Three model grain boundaries were considered: the Σ 3 ( 1 1 ¯ 1 ) [ 110 ] , Σ 5 ( 120 ) [ 001 ] and Σ 11 ( 1 1 ¯ 0 ) [ 113 ] , as representatives for the highly coherent twin, high energy random high angle, and “special” low energy highly coherent grain boundaries, respectively. Hydrogen segregation was found to be favourable in the Σ 5 and Σ 11 grain boundaries, but not in the Σ 3. Hydrogen accumulation studied via a comprehensive site-permutation analysis revealed the mechanisms for how H accumulation capacity varies as a function of grain boundary character. We show that the interfacial cohesion of boundaries can diminish by between 6.7-37.5% at varying levels of H-accumulation. The cohesion of the grain boundaries was analysed using a novel chemical bond-order based approach, enabling a quantitative atomistic determination of the fracture paths arising from hydrogen embrittlement. These simulations explain the details of why grain boundary character is the principal determinant of the likelihood of hydrogen segregation and accumulation, and hence their vulnerability to hydrogen-enhanced decohesion. This knowledge can be used in the design of thermomechanical processes to achieve grain boundary engineering for resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.

Abstract

Boron (B) and phosphorous (P) co-doped colloidal silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) have unique size-dependent optical properties, which lead to potential applications in optoelectronic and biomedical applications. However, the microstructure of the B and P co-doped colloidal Si NCs – in particular, the exact location of the dopant atoms in real space, has not been studied. A lack of understanding of this underlying question limits our ability to better control sample fabrication, as well as our ability to further develop the optical properties. To study the microstructure, a process enabling atom probe tomography (APT) of colloidal Si NCs was developed. A dispersion of colloidal Si NCs in a SiO2 sol-gel solution and a low temperature curing are demonstrated as the key sample preparation steps. Our APT results demonstrate that a B-rich region exists at the surface of the Si NCs, while P atoms are distributed within the Si NCs. First principles density functional theory calculations of a Si NC embedded in SiO2 matrix reveal that P atoms, which always prefer to reside inside a Si NC, significantly influence the distribution of B atoms. Specifically, P atoms lower the B diffusion barrier at Si/SiO2 interface and stabilize B atoms to reside within individual Si NCs. We propose that the B-modified surface changes the chemical properties of the Si NCs by (i) offering chemical resistance to attack by HF and (ii) enabling dispersibility in solution without aggregation.

Abstract

Plastic deformation in ceramic materials is normally only observed in nanometre-sized samples. However, we have observed unprecedented levels of plasticity (>50% plastic strain) and excellent elasticity (6% elastic strain) in perovskite oxide Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT), under compression along pc pillars up to 2.1 μm in diameter. The extent of this deformation is much higher than has previously been reported for ceramic materials, and the sample size at which plasticity is observed is almost an order of magnitude larger. Bending tests also revealed over 8% flexural strain. Plastic deformation occurred by slip along {110} . Calculations indicate that the resulting strain gradients will give rise to extreme flexoelectric polarization. First principles models predict that a high concentration of oxygen vacancies (Vo) weaken the covalent/ionic bonds, giving rise to the unexpected plasticity. Mechanical testing on Vo-rich Mn-doped PIN-PMN-PT confirmed this prediction. These findings will facilitate the design of plastic ceramic materials and the development of flexoelectric-based nano-electromechanical systems.

Abstract

Two-dimensional auxetic materials with negative Poisson's ratio expand in response to a tensile strain in cross-section. Such counter-intuitive behaviours have been mainly ascribed to concave structures with ideal rigid ball-stick models. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we systematically analyze the mechanical behaviours of three life-boat structured two-dimensional (2D) materials and report two new auxetic materials: δ-arsenic and δ-graphane. The calculated Poisson's ratio values are correlated with Young's modulus, cohesive energy, and valence shell electron pair repulsion of isostructures. Combining with previous research, we provide a self-consistent explanation of the origin of the 2D in-plane negative Poisson's ratio and an algorithmic route to discover new auxetic materials by comparing the energy restored in bond rotation and stretch.

Abstract

Solute clustering is a technologically important microstructural process in Al alloys. Exerting control over this process to enhance the alloy properties and reduce the energy costs of production is a major scientific and technological focus, with automotive sheet applications serving as a key driver. In this work, we detail changes in the state of clustering arising from the insertion of a thermomechanical pre-ageing process, via a coil-cooling step in a commercial production line, immediately after solution treatment. This pre-ageing step effectively mitigates the negative effects of the natural ageing on the mechanical properties that would otherwise occur after solution treatment and ahead of the final paint-bake step. Our work was focussed on a short duration/low temperature single-step pre-ageing process on a Cu-lean grade of AA6016. Using a combination of atom probe tomography and first principles density functional theory simulations, we are able to reveal and explain the atomic-scale microstructure arising from this thermomechanical process. Mg–Si co-clusters ≥ 20 solute atoms were found responsible for the excellent properties in the material exposed to the pre-ageing plus paint-baking process. Our simulations revealed that vacancies can effectively stabilise single-species Si clusters enabling them to attract further solute and serving as a pathway to formation of the larger Mg–Si co-clusters that are so beneficial to alloy properties. Our simulations also revealed that the nearest neighbour configurations are a critical aspect to the stability of the clusters.

Abstract

The surface of diamond is reported to undergo nonablative photochemical etching when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation which allows controlled single and partial layer removal of lattice layers. Oxygen termination of surface dangling bonds is known to be crucial for the etching process; however, the exact mechanism of carbon ejection remains unclear. We investigate the interaction of UV laser pulses with oxygen-terminated diamond surfaces using atomic-scale surface characterization combined with first-principles time-dependent density functional theory calculations. We present evidence for laser-induced desorption (LID) from carbonyl functional groups at the diamond ${001}$ surface. The doubly bonded carbonyl group is photoexcited into a triply bonded CO-like state, including scission of the underlying $\mathrm{C}─\mathrm{C}$ bonds. The carbon removal process in LID is atom by atom; therefore, this mechanism provides a novel ``top-down'' approach for creating nanostructures on the surface of diamond and other carbon-containing semiconductors.

Abstract

Identifying stable systems with high CO2 adsorption capacity is an essential goal in CO2 capture and storage technologies. We have carried out a comprehensive first-principles study to explore the CO2 capture capacity of 16 representative metal-doped graphene systems where the metal dopants can be stabilized by single- and double-vacancies. The maximum number of adsorbed CO2 molecules was determined by a combination of adsorption energy and bond distance criteria. Generally, while the double-vacancy can bind metal dopants more strongly than the single-vacancy, single-vacancy graphene with metal dopants are better sorbents, with each Ca, Sc and Y dopant binding up to 5 CO2 molecules. CO2 capture involves significant charge transfer between the CO2 molecule and the dopant–vacancy complexes, where defective graphene acts as a charge reservoir for binding CO2 molecules. Some systems are predicted to involve the formation of a bent CO2 anion. Ca-doped single- and double-vacancy graphene systems, however, readily form oxides upon reaction with CO2, thus they are less reusable for CO2 capture.

Abstract

It has been often believed that substitutional solute atoms undergo preferential segregation to stacking faults (Suzuki effect). Here, density functional theory calculations reveal a rather diverse spatial distribution of the alloying atoms with respect to faults in binary Mg alloys. Interestingly, while some solutes encounter energy barriers when approaching faults, there is almost no barrier for Al and Sn. These findings advance our understanding concerning the interaction between solutes and extended defects, and provide guidance for stacking fault engineering in Mg alloys.

Abstract

Density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function calculations have been used to explore spin-resolved transport through the high-spin state of an iron(II)sulfur single molecular magnet. Our results show that this molecule exhibits near-perfect spin filtering, where the spin-filtering efficiency is above 99%, as well as significant negative differential resistance centered at a low bias voltage. The rise in the spin-up conductivity up to the bias voltage of 0.4 V is dominated by a conductive lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, and this is accompanied by a slight increase in the magnetic moment of the Fe atom. The subsequent drop in the spin-up conductivity is because the conductive channel moves to the highest occupied molecular orbital which has a lower conductance contribution. This is accompanied by a drop in the magnetic moment of the Fe atom. These two exceptional properties, and the fact that the onset of negative differential resistance occurs at low bias voltage, suggests the potential of the molecule in nanoelectronic and nanospintronic applications., 8 pages

Abstract

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation into the vibrational properties of cubic 8–9 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is presented. Measurements of acoustic phonon dispersion curves have been obtained from inelastic neutron scattering investigations using a triple axis spectrometer, as well as calculations of the vibrational density-of-states (vDOS) using density-functional theory. The present measurements agree closely with, and extend, previously published results. The phonons become broader and decrease in intensity as the Brillouin zone boundary is approached, particularly in the Γ–Δ–X direction. Interestingly, there is evidence of a previously unreported low energy phonon band (8–9 meV) in the Γ–Σ–X direction, which could possibly be related to the stabilization (by yttria doping) of the imaginary mode of cubic ZrO2 about the X-point. Compared to pure cubic ZrO2, the vDOS of YSZ are broader and extend to higher frequency. Furthermore, the prominent Zr-related feature in the vDOS of c-ZrO2 at ≈14 meV is shifted to higher energy in the vDOS of YSZ. This behavior is consistent with the measured dispersion bands (first acoustic branch in the Γ–X direction, about the X-point) of YSZ which is higher in energy by a similar amount relative to that of c-ZrO2, thus providing support for the structural model considered.

Abstract

Due to their graphene-like properties after oxygen reduction, incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) sheets into correlated-electron materials offers a new pathway for tailoring their properties. Fabricating GO nanocomposites with polycrystalline MgB2 superconductors leads to an order of magnitude enhancement of the supercurrent at 5 K/8 T and 20 K/4 T. Herein, we introduce a novel experimental approach to overcome the formidable challenge of performing quantitative microscopy and microanalysis of such composites, so as to unveil how GO doping influences the structure and hence the material properties. Atom probe microscopy and electron microscopy were used to directly image the GO within the MgB2, and we combined these data with computational simulations to derive the property-enhancing mechanisms. Our results reveal synergetic effects of GO, namely, via localized atomic (carbon and oxygen) doping as well as texturing of the crystals, which provide both inter- and intra-granular flux pinning. This study opens up new insights into how low-dimensional nanostructures can be integrated into composites to modify the overall properties, using a methodology amenable to a wide range of applications.

Abstract

Much effort has been devoted to the development of computational techniques in atom probe microscopy over the past decade. There have been several drivers for this effort. Firstly, there has been effort devoted to addressing the challenges of discerning information from the increasingly large size of the data, and capturing the opportunities that this large data presents. Secondly, there has been significant new effort devoted to the simulation of atom probe data so that pristine datasets that contain microstructural features of increasing complexity can be generated in-silico , and subjected to complex data-mining algorithms. This has enabled the benchmarking of various algorithms, guided the setting of parameters for particular analyses, and exposed the effects of instrumentation parameters such as detector efficiency and aberrations in ionic flight path. The authors are especially interested in the prospects of converging atomic-scale microscopy with atomic-scale materials modelling via first principles approaches. This involves excising parts of the APM data and using these as super-cell inputs to calculations of materials properties via density functional theory. It is our opinion that this represents a major advance for materials science because it enables microscopy to advance microstructure–property relationships to the direct mapping of such relationships based on many-body interactions. As such, this approach has great potential for materials design and development. The final part of this paper focuses on how cloud-based computing represents an exciting frontier of the computational aspects of atom probe microscopy. We discuss the opportunities and the barriers for conducting new materials science through the analysis and visualisation of atom probe data via new generation tools that are cloud-based, and which are managed, curated and governed with significant user-community input and integrated with contemporary electronic laboratory notebook technology.

Abstract

The structural, optical and magnetic properties of Ag 13 , Ag 12 Cu 1 and Cu 13 clusters have been investigated using density functional theory calculations. The global minimum of the Ag 12 Cu 1 cluster is predicted to be cuboctahedral (COh) core–shell structure with O h point group symmetry while the icosahedral (Ih) core–shell isomer has a higher HOMO–LUMO gap and higher magnetic moment. The optical absorption spectrum of the Ih Ag 12 Cu 1 has three absorption peaks at 2.17, 2.41 and 2.65 eV, compared with that the COh Ag 12 Cu 1 has one main absorption peak at 2.51 eV. The characteristics in electronic density of states (DOSs) show that Ih core–shell Ag 12 Cu 1 has ferromagnetic properties like pure Au 13 , Ag 13 nanoclusters. The sizable split between spin up and spin down DOS of d states in the inner Cu atom and sp states in the outer Ag atoms bring in large magnetic moment to Ih Ag 12 Cu 1 cluster.

Abstract

Here we present a study of magnetism in Co_{0.05}Ti_{0.95}O_{2-δ} anatase films grown by pulsed laser deposition under a variety of oxygen partial pressures and deposition rates. Energy-dispersive spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy analyses indicate that a high deposition rate leads to a homogeneous microstructure, while a very low rate or postannealing results in cobalt clustering. Depth resolved low-energy muon spin rotation experiments show that films grown at a low oxygen partial pressure (≈10^{-6} torr) with a uniform structure are fully magnetic, indicating intrinsic ferromagnetism. First principles calculations identify the beneficial role of low oxygen partial pressure in the realization of uniform carrier-mediated ferromagnetism. This work demonstrates that Co:TiO_{2} is an intrinsic diluted magnetic semiconductor.

Abstract

Understanding the band structure evolution of (AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloys is of fundamental importance for developing Ga2O3-based power electronic devices and vacuum ultraviolet super-radiation hard detectors. Here, we report on the bandgap engineering of β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 thin films and the identification of compositionally dependent electronic band structures by a combination of absorption spectra analyses and density functional theory calculations. Single-monoclinic β-phase (AlxGa1−x)2O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.54) films with a preferred (−201) orientation were grown by laser molecular beam epitaxy with tunable bandgap ranging from 4.5 to 5.5 eV. The excellent fitting of absorption spectra by the relation of (αhν)1/2 ∝ (hν-E) unambiguously identifies that β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 alloys are indirect bandgap semiconductors. Theoretical calculations predict that the indirect nature of β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 becomes more pronounced with increased Al composition due to the increased eigenvalue energy gap between M and Г points in the valence band. The experimentally determined indirect bandgap exhibits almost a linear relationship with Al composition, which is consistent with the theoretical calculation and indicates a small bowing effect and a good miscibility. The identification and modulation of (AlxGa1−x)2O3 band structures allows rational design of ultra-wide bandgap oxide heterostructures for the applications in power electronics and solar-blind or X-ray detection.

Abstract

The evolution of resistivity versus temperature (�(T)) curve for different doping elements, and in the presence of various defects and clustering are explained for both diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) and manganites. Here, we provide unambiguous evidence that the concept of ionization energy (EI), which is explicitly associated with the atomic energy levels, can be related quantitatively to transport measurements. The proposed ionization energy model is used to understand how the valence states of ions affect the evolution of �(T) curves for different doping elements. We also explain how the �(T) curves evolve in the presence of, and in the absence of defects and clustering. The model also complements the results obtained from first-principles calculations.

Abstract

Based on the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism and density-functional theory, we investigate the onset of electrical rectification in a single C59N molecule in conjunction with gold electrodes. Our calculations reveal that rectification is dependent upon the anchoring of the Au atom on C59N; when the Au electrode is singly bonded to a C atom (labeled here as A), the system does not exhibit rectification, whereas when the electrode is connected to the C-C bridge site between two hexagonal rings (labeled here as B), transmission asymmetry is observed, where the rectification ratio reaches up to 2.62 at ±1 V depending on the N doping site relative to the anchoring site. Our analysis of the transmission mechanism shows that N doping of the B configuration causes rectification because more transmission channels are available for transmission in the B configuration than in the A configuration.

Abstract

We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, A_{LL}, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x>0.05.

Abstract

Using hybrid density functional calculations, we study the electronic and structural properties of ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$ and ordered $\mathrm{Sr}(\mathrm{Ti},\mathrm{Zr}){\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ alloys. Calculations were performed for the ground-state orthorhombic $(Pnma)$ and high-temperature cubic $(Pm3m)$ phases of ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$. The variation of the lattice parameters and band gaps with Ti addition was studied using ordered ${\mathrm{SrTi}}_{x}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{Zr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ structures with $x=0$, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. As Ti is added to ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}$, the lattice parameter is reduced and closely follows Vegard's law. On the other hand, the band gap shows a large bowing and is highly sensitive to the Ti distribution. For $x=0.5$, we find that arranging the Ti and Zr atoms into a $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}/{\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ superlattice along the [001] direction leads to interesting properties, including a highly dispersive single band at the conduction-band minimum (CBM), which is absent in both parent compounds, and a band gap close to that of pure ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$. These features are explained by the splitting of the lowest three conduction-band states due to the reduced symmetry of the superlattice, lowering the band originating from the in-plane Ti $3{d}_{xy}$ orbitals. The lifting of the ${t}_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy around the CBM suppresses scattering due to electron-phonon interactions. Our results demonstrate how short-period ${\mathrm{SrZrO}}_{3}/{\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$ superlattices could be exploited to engineer the band structure and improve carrier mobility compared to bulk ${\mathrm{SrTiO}}_{3}$.

Abstract

The coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism in $AB{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ perovskite oxides is rare, a phenomenon that has become known as the ferroelectric ``${d}^{0}$ rule.'' Recently, the perovskite ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$ has been shown experimentally to be isostructural with ${\mathrm{PbTiO}}_{3}$, while simultaneously the ${d}^{6}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ion has a high-spin ground state with $C$-type antiferromagnetic ordering. It has been suggested that the hybridization of Bi $6s$ states with the O $2p$ valence band stabilizes the polar phase, however, we have recently demonstrated that ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ions in the perovskite structure can facilitate a ferroelectric distortion via the Co $3d$--O $2p$ covalent interaction [L. Weston, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 247601 (2015)]. In this paper, using accurate hybrid density functional calculations, we investigate the atomic, electronic, and magnetic structure of ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$ to elucidate the origin of the multiferroic state. To begin with, we perform a more general first-principles investigation of the role of $d$ electrons in affecting the tendency for perovskite materials to exhibit a ferroelectric distortion; this is achieved via a qualitative trend study in artificial cubic and tetragonal $\mathrm{La}B{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ perovskites. We choose La as the $A$ cation so as to remove the effects of Bi $6s$ hybridization. The lattice instability is identified by the softening of phonon modes in the cubic phase, as well as by the energy lowering associated with a ferroelectric distortion. For the $\mathrm{La}B{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ series, where $B$ is a ${d}^{0}--{d}^{8}$ cation from the $3d$ block, the trend study reveals that increasing the $d$ orbital occupation initially removes the tendency for a polar distortion, as expected. However, for high-spin ${d}^{5}--{d}^{7}$ and ${d}^{8}$ cations a strong ferroelectric instability is recovered. This effect is explained in terms of increased pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) $p\ensuremath{-}d$ vibronic coupling. The PJT effect is described by the competition between a stabilizing force (${K}_{0}$) that favors the cubic phase, and a vibronic term that drives the ferroelectric state (${K}_{v}$). The recovery of the lattice instability for high-spin ${d}^{5}--{d}^{7}$ and ${d}^{8}$ cations is due to (i) a reduction in ${K}_{0}$ due to a significant volume increase arising from population of the $\ensuremath{\sigma}$-bonded axial $d\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{e}_{g}$ orbitals, and (ii) an increase in the ${K}_{v}$ contribution arising from increased $p\ensuremath{-}d$ hybridization; our calculations suggest that the former mechanism is dominant. Surprisingly, we are able to show that, in some cases unpaired electron spins actually drive ferroelectricity, rather than inhibit it, which represents a shift in the understanding of how ferroelectricity and magnetism interact in perovskite oxides. It follows, that for the case of ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$, the ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ion plays a major role in the ferroelectric lattice instability. Importantly, the ferroelectric polarization is greatly enhanced when the ${\mathrm{Co}}^{3+}$ ion is in the high-spin state, when compared to the nonmagnetic, low-spin state, and a large coupling of the electric and magnetic polarization is present. Generally, for ${d}^{5}--{d}^{7} B$ cations in $AB{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ perovskites, an inherent and remarkably strong magnetoelectric coupling exists via the multiferroic crossover effect, whereby switching the spin state strongly affects the ferroelectric polarization and, potentially, manipulation of the polarization with an externally applied electric field could induce a spin-state transition. This novel effect is demonstrated for ${\mathrm{BiCoO}}_{3}$, for which the ground spin state is switched by reducing the internal ferroelectric polarization. These results provide a deeper insight into perovskite ferroelectrics and multiferroics.

Abstract

We present an ab initio density functional study of magnetic phase transitions in the YCo3H2 system. The augmented plane wave and local orbital method as employed in the WIEN2K code is used to predict the structure and electronic structure of this compound. Comparison is made with recent X-ray diffraction and magnetization studies. The calculations suggest that the YCo3H2 system is ferrimagnetic in character. Further, fixed spin moment calculations are used to predict and interpret magnetic phase transitions observed in externally applied magnetic fields.

Abstract

We present the results of first-principles computational studies of the dynamical properties of hexagonal ice using both the ab-initio pseudopotential method and the full-potential augmented plane-wave method. Properties obtained using both the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the meta-GGA in density-functional theory are compared. The lattice-dynamical properties of the structures are obtained using a finite-difference evaluation of the dynamical matrix and force-constant matrix from atomic forces. Phonon dispersion is evaluated by the direct determination of the force-constant matrix in supercells derived from the primitive molecule unit cells with the assumption that force constants are zero beyond the second molecular nearest neighbors. The k-dependent phonon frequencies are then obtained from the force-constant matrix and dispersion relations, and the Brillouin-zone integrated density of states is evaluated. The importance of phonon dispersion in the various regions of the phonon spectra is then assessed and compared to existing neutron-scattering data. Frozen-phonon calculations are used to compare phonon frequencies evaluated in both the GGA and meta-GGA. PACS Nos.: 61.12Ex, 63.20Dj

Abstract

Event-by-event fluctuations of the multiplicities of inclusive charged particles and photons at forward rapidity in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV have been studied. The dominant contribution to such fluctuations is expected to come from correlated production of charged and neutral pions. We search for evidence of dynamical fluctuations of different physical origins. Observables constructed out of moments of multiplicities are used as measures of fluctuations. Mixed events and model calculations are used as base lines. Results are compared to the dynamical net-charge fluctuations measured in the same acceptance. A nonzero statistically significant signal of dynamical fluctuations is observed in excess to the model prediction when charged particles and photons are measured in the same acceptance. We find that, unlike dynamical net-charge fluctuation, charge-neutral fluctuation is not dominated by correlation owing to particle decay. Abstract

Modulation of material physical and chemical properties through selective surface engineering is currently one of the most active research fields, aimed at optimizing functional performance for applications. The activity of exposed crystal planes determines the catalytic, sensory, photocatalytic and electrochemical behavior of a material. In the research on nanomagnets, it opens up new perspectives in the fields of nanoelectronics, spintronics and quantum computation. Herein, we demonstrate controllable magnetic modulation of α-MnO2 nanowires, which displayed surface ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism, depending on the exposed plane. First-principles density functional theory calculations confirm that both Mn- and O-terminated α-MnO2 (1 1 0) surfaces exhibit ferromagnetic ordering. The investigation of surface-controlled magnetic particles will lead to significant progress in our fundamental understanding of functional aspects of magnetism on the nanoscale, facilitating rational design of nanomagnets. Moreover, we approved that the facet engineering pave the way on designing semiconductors possessing unique properties for novel energy applications, owing to that the bandgap and the electronic transport of the semiconductor can be tailored via exposed surface modulations.

A high statistics measurement of the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ correlation function in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC suggests that the strength of the interaction is weak and provides a new limit on H-dibaryon production.

Abstract

This article adopts the method of panel data index factor analysis, to evaluate and analyze the input and output capacity of science and technology among88 national high-tech zones in China in the past six years. First of all, the author designs eight evaluation indexes on science and technology innovation ability, then, carries on six factor analysis to 88 statelevel high-tech zones between 2008 to 2013 with SPSS18.0 software, and extracts the two common factors: Input factor and output factor. Then, the author calculates their factor scores and integrated total scores with Microsoft Excel. Finally, the author calculates the integrated total score of panel data, finds out the factors which affect the development of science and technology innovation ability on high-tech zones according to the score, and provides a reference to the scientific and technological development of high-tech zones. Abstract

We report the first measurement of charmed-hadron (D-0) production via the hadronic decay channel (D-0 -> K- + pi(+)) in Au + Au collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment. The charm production cross section per nucleon- nucleon collision at midrapidity scales with the number of binary collisions, N-bin, from p + p to central Au + Au collisions. The D-0 meson yields in central Au + Au collisions are strongly suppressed compared to those in p + p scaled by N-bin, for transverse momenta p(T) > 3 GeV/c, demonstrating significant energy loss of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium. An enhancement at intermediate p(T) is also observed. Model calculations including strong charm-medium interactions and coalescence hadronization describe our measurements.

Abstract

A complete phase diagram and its corresponding physical properties are essential prerequisites to understand the underlying mechanism of iron-based superconductivity. For the structurally simplest 11 (FeSeTe) system, earlier attempts using bulk samples have not been able to do so due to the fabrication difficulties. Here, thin FeSe(x)Te(1-x) films with the Se content covering the full range (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) were fabricated by using pulsed laser deposition method. Crystal structure analysis shows that all films retain the tetragonal structure in room temperature. Significantly, the highest superconducting transition temperature (T(C) = 20 K) occurs in the newly discovered domain, i.e., 0.6 ≤ x ≤ 0.8. The single-phased superconducting dome for the full Se doping range is the first of its kind in iron chalcogenide superconductors. Our results present a new avenue to explore novel physics as well as to optimize superconductors.

Abstract

We report the first measurements of the moments-mean (M), variance (sigma(2)), skewness (S), and kurtosis (kappa)-of the net-charge multiplicity distributions at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at seven energies, ranging from root s(NN) = 7.7 to 200 GeV, as a part of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The moments are related to the thermodynamic susceptibilities of net charge, and are sensitive to the location of the QCD critical point. We compare the products of the moments, sigma(2)/M, S sigma, and kappa sigma(2), with the expectations from Poisson and negative binomial distributions (NBDs). The S sigma values deviate from the Poisson baseline and are close to the NBD baseline, while the kappa sigma(2) values tend to lie between the two. Within the present uncertainties, our data do not show nonmonotonic behavior as a function of collision energy. These measurements provide a valuable tool to extract the freeze-out parameters in heavy-ion collisions by comparing with theoretical models.

Abstract

Microscopy encompasses a wide variety of forms and scales. So too does the array of simulation techniques developed that correlate to and build upon microstructural information. Nevertheless, a true nexus between microscopy and atomistic simulations is lacking. Atom probe has emerged as a potential means of achieving this goal. Atom probe generates three-dimensional atomistic images in a format almost identical to many atomistic simulations. However, this data is imperfect, preventing input into computational algorithms to predict material properties. Here we describe a methodology to overcome these limitations, based on a hybrid data format, blending atom probe and predictive Monte Carlo simulations. We create atomically complete and lattice-bound models of material specimens. This hybrid data can then be used as direct input into density functional theory simulations to calculate local energetics and elastic properties. This research demonstrates the role that atom probe combined with theoretical approaches can play in modern materials engineering.

Abstract

A study is reported of the same-and opposite-sign charge-dependent azimuthal correlations with respect to the event plane in Au+ Au collisions at root(S)(NN) = 200 GeV. The charge multiplicity asymmetries between the up/down and left/right hemispheres relative to the event plane are utilized. The contributions from statistical fluctuations and detector effects were subtracted from the (co-) variance of the observed charge multiplicity asymmetries. In the mid-to most-central collisions, the same- (opposite-) sign pairs are preferentially emitted in back-to-back (aligned on the same-side) directions. The charge separation across the event plane, measured by the difference, Delta, between the like-and unlike-sign up/down-left/right correlations, is largest near the event plane. The difference is found to be proportional to the event-by-event final-state particle ellipticity (via the observed second order harmonic nu(obs)(2)), where Delta = [ 1.3 +/- 1.4( stat)(-1.0)(+4.0)(syst)] x 10(-5) + [3.2 +/- 0.2(stat)(- 0.3)(+0.4)(syst)] x 10(-3)v(2)(obs) for 20- 40% Au + Au collisions. The implications for the proposed chiral magnetic effect are discussed.

Abstract

Previous experimental results based on data (∼15×106 events) collected by the STAR detector at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider suggest event-by-event charge-separation fluctuations perpendicular to the event plane in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. Here we present the correlator previously used split into its two component parts to reveal correlations parallel and perpendicular to the event plane. The results are from a high-statistics 200-GeV Au + Au collisions data set (57×106 events) collected by the STAR experiment. We explicitly count units of charge separation from which we find clear evidence for more charge-separation fluctuations perpendicular than parallel to the event plane. We also employ a modified correlator to study the possible P-even background in same- and opposite-charge correlations, and find that the P-even background may largely be explained by momentum conservation and collective motion. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The measurement of J/psi azimuthal anisotropy is presented as a function of transverse momentum for different centralities in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The measured J/psi elliptic flow is consistent with zero within errors for transverse momentum between 2 and 10 GeV/c. Our measurement suggests that J/psi particles with relatively large transverse momenta are not dominantly produced by coalescence from thermalized charm quarks, when comparing to model calculations.
