Abstract Transition metal d-electron oxides with an odd number of electrons per unit cell are expected to form metals with partially occupied energy bands, but exhibit in fact a range of behaviors, being either insulators, or metals, or having insulator-metal transitions. Traditional explanations involved predominantly electron-electron interactions in fixed structural symmetry. The present work focuses instead on the role of symmetry breaking local structural motifs. Viewing the previously observed V-V dimerization in VO2 as a continuous knob, reveals in density functional calculations the splitting of an isolated flat band from the broad conduction band. This leads past a critical percent dimerization to the formation of the insulating phase while lowering the total energy. In VO2 this transition is found to have a rather low energy barrier approaching the thermal energy at room temperature, suggesting energy-efficient switching in neuromorphic computing. Interestingly, sufficient V-V dimerization suppresses magnetism, leading to the nonmagnetic insulating state, whereas magnetism appears when dimerization is reduced, forming a metallic state. This study opens the way to design novel functional quantum materials with symmetry breaking-induced flat bands.

BackgroundAging, a significant public health issue, is associated with multiple concurrent chronic diseases and aging-related conditions (geriatric syndromes). ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the impact of age and chronic conditions on geriatric syndromes and the intercorrelations between multiple geriatric syndromes and quality of life (QoL) in older adults (aged ≥65 years) at the population level. MethodsA large representative sample was randomly selected from a county in China, Feidong, with 17 towns and 811,867 residents. Multiple chronic conditions, geriatric syndromes (frailty, polypharmacy, and malnutrition), and QoL were assessed and compared. Associations of demographic information and chronic conditions with geriatric conditions and QoL in older adults were assessed using multivariable-adjusted logistic regression. Intercorrelations between age, multiple geriatric syndromes, and QoL were investigated using both correlation analysis and restricted cubic splines–based multivariable-adjusted dose-response analysis. ResultsOlder adults comprised 43.42% (3668/8447) of the entire study population. The prevalence of frailty, premalnutrition or malnutrition, polypharmacy, and impaired QoL (median age 73, IQR 69-78 years; 1871/3668, 51% men) was 8.26% (303/3668), 15.59% (572/3668), 3.22% (118/3668), and 10.8% (396/3668), respectively. Different age and sex subgroups mostly had similar prevalence of geriatric syndromes (except that frailty occurred more often with older age). Premalnutrition or malnutrition were associated with a lower frequency of obesity and a higher frequency of constipation, polypharmacy with a higher frequency of diabetes and constipation, frailty with a higher frequency of constipation and hernia, and impaired QoL with a higher frequency of hypertension, diabetes, physical disability, and constipation. Mini Nutritional Assessment–Short Form, Groningen Frailty Indicator, and EQ-5D-5L scores, as well as the number of medications used, mostly predicted each other and QoL. Impaired QoL was associated with a higher frequency of frailty, premalnutrition or malnutrition, and polypharmacy, and frailty with a higher frequency of premalnutrition or malnutrition and polypharmacy. At a 1.5-year follow-up, impaired QoL was linked to polypharmacy and frailty at baseline, premalnutrition or malnutrition and polypharmacy were associated with frailty at baseline, and frailty was linked to both premalnutrition or malnutrition and polypharmacy at baseline. Causal mediation analyses showed that frailty mediated the link between polypharmacy and worse QoL and that polypharmacy mediated the link between frailty and worse QoL. ConclusionsIn this large population-based study of older adults, multiple chronic conditions were associated with ≥1 of the investigated geriatric syndromes. Geriatric syndromes were mostly intercorrelated with, and well predictive of, each other and QoL; and causal relationships existed between geriatric syndromes and QoL, with other geriatric syndromes being mediators. The findings might be biased by residual confounding factors. It is important to perform personalized geriatric syndrome assessments stratified by chronic condition; active prevention of, or intervention for, any syndrome might help to reduce the others and improve QoL.

Aiolos (IKZF3), a zinc finger transcription factor, has been identified in various solid tumors. While most research on Aiolos focuses on its role in the hematopoietic system, its expression patterns, mechanisms of action, and biological impacts in lung cancer remain relatively unexplored. This study investigates Aiolos’ role in the proliferation, migration, and invasion of lung cancer cells. Our findings indicate that Aiolos overexpression enhances these cellular processes, suggesting its potential contribution to the advancement of the disease. However, the precise mechanisms underlying these effects require further investigation. Additionally, we identified OTUB1 as a potential Aiolos-interacting protein. OTUB1, a deubiquitinating enzyme, removes ubiquitin chains from target proteins, thereby affecting their stability, function, or localization. Our results suggest that OTUB1 specially bound to Aiolos and reduces its ubiquitination, which may influence Aiolos-related biological functions, including cell migration and invasion. This study highlights the pivotal roles of Aiolos and OTUB1 in lung cancer progression, potentially offering new therapeutic targets.

Abstract During the last two decades, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been the focus of condensed matter physics and material science due to their promising fundamental properties and (opto-)electronic applications. However, high-κ 2D dielectrics that can be integrated within 2D devices are often missing. Here, we propose nonlayered oxide monolayers with calculated exfoliation energy as low as 0.39 J/m2 stemming from the ionic feature of the metal oxide bonds. We predict 51 easily or potentially exfoliable oxide monolayers, including metals and insulators/semiconductors, with intriguing physical properties such as ultra-high κ values, negative Poisson’s ratios and large valley spin splitting. Among them, the most promising dielectric, GeO2, exhibits an auxetic effect, a κ value of 99, and forms type-I heterostructures with MoSe2 and HfSe2, with a band offset of ~1 eV. Our study opens the way for designing nonlayered 2D oxides, offering a platform for studying the rich physics in ultra-thin oxides and their potential applications in future information technologies.

Abstract Many textbook physical effects in crystals are enabled by some specific symmetries. In contrast to such ‘apparent effects’, ‘hidden effect X’ refers to the general condition where the nominal global system symmetry would disallow the effect X, whereas the symmetry of local sectors within the crystal would enable effect X. Known examples include the hidden Rashba and/or hidden Dresselhaus spin polarization that require spin-orbit coupling, but unlike their apparent counterparts are demonstrated to exist in non-magnetic systems even in inversion-symmetric crystals. Here, we discuss hidden spin polarization effect in collinear antiferromagnets without the requirement for spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Symmetry analysis suggests that antiferromagnets hosting such effect can be classified into six types depending on the global vs local symmetry. We identify which of the possible collinear antiferromagnetic compounds will harbor such hidden polarization and validate these symmetry enabling predictions with first-principles density functional calculations for several representative compounds. This will boost the theoretical and experimental efforts in finding new spin-polarized materials.

Aims: The aims of this study are to investigate the etiology, microbiological spectrum, and risk factors associated with visual outcomes of fungal endophthalmitis (FE) in a tertiary eye specialty hospital in Shanghai, China. Methods: This was a retrospective, single-center case series. The clinical characteristics, etiology, microbiological spectrum, and management, as well as the visual outcomes, were analyzed. Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors related to visual outcomes. Results: This study involved 102 eyes of 92 patients with FE, including 63 males (66.3%). The mean age was 44.4 ± 19.8 years. The most common etiology of FE was trauma (56.5%). The predominant fungal species isolated were Aspergillus spp. (31/93, 33.3%). Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and intravitreal antifungal agents was performed initially in 86 (84.3%) and 83 (81.4%) eyes, respectively. Only 35 (34.3%) eyes achieved final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/400 or better. Ten (9.8%) eyes had a final BCVA of light perception or worse, and five (4.9%) had to be enucleated. The factors determining better visual outcomes included initial visual acuity better than finger-counting (FC) (odds ratio (OR) 5.811, p = 0.036), the absence of corneal infiltrate (OR 10.131, p = 0.002), and Candida species infection (OR 6.325, p = 0.011). Conclusions: Early diagnosis of FE and a timely vitrectomy, combined with an intravitreal injection of an antifungal drug, can mitigate the devastating results of intraocular fungal infection. Not being infected by Aspergillus spp., an initial BCVA that was no worse than FC, and the absence of corneal involvement were related to better visual prognosis.

Acute post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis (APSE) is a serious vision-threatening complication of cataract surgery. Analysis of the management and prognosis in cases of APSE may provide better guidance for future treatment. Fifty-six patients (56 eyes) diagnosed with APSE between 2013 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. The incidence of APSE rate was 0.020% (95% CI: 0.011–0.029%). Intraocular cultures were positive in 18 (32.1%) cases, with 21 organisms isolated. Coagulase-negative staphylococci was the predominant isolate (12/21; 57.1%). The time from surgery to the onset of endophthalmitis was 7 days (interquartile range: 3–16) in patients with good best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (≥20/70) and 3 days (interquartile range: 1–8) in those with poor BCVA (p < 0.001), time from onset to initial intravitreal antibiotics (IVAs) (p < 0.001), and positive culture of highly virulent pathogens (p = 0.018) displayed significantly positive associations with the final BCVA (logMAR). Adjunctive use of intravitreal corticosteroids and systemic antibiotics were unrelated to a favorable final BCVA. In conclusion, the severity of the visual condition at baseline, as well as delayed treatment, are risk factors for poor visual outcomes in APSE.

Abstract Monolayers of layered materials, such as graphite and molybdenum dichalcogenides, have been the focus of materials science in the last decades. Here, we reveal benign stability and intriguing physical properties in the thinnest monolayer wurtzite (wz) semiconductors, which can be exfoliated from their bulk and stacked to reform the wz crystals. The candidate ZnX and CdX (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers possess low cleavage energy and direct bandgaps, which harbor strongly coupled ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity with low transition barriers, giant in-plane negative Poisson’s ratio, as well as giant Rashba spin splitting, enabling the co-tunability of spin splitting and auxetic magnitudes via multiferroic switching. These wz monolayers can be used as building blocks of devices structures, due to their inherent “self-healable” capacity, which offer more flexibility for semiconductor fabrication and provide a natural platform to probe the interplay of multiple physical effects, bringing light into the rich physics in tetrahedral semiconductors.

Abstract Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been reported to play significant roles in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the roles of microRNA (miR)-1915-3p in NSCLC remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the biological functions of miR-1915-3p in NSCLC. Methods The expression of miR-1915-3p and SET nuclear proto-oncogene (SET) in NSCLC tissues were examined by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Migratory and invasive abilities of lung cancer were tested by wound healing and transwell invasion assay. The direct target genes of miR-1915-3p were measured by dual-luciferase reporter assay and western blot. Finally, the regulation between METTL3/YTHDF2/KLF4 axis and miR-1915-3p were evaluated by qRT-PCR, promoter reporter assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation (CHIP). Results miR-1915-3p was downregulated in NSCLC tissues and cell lines, and inversely associated with clinical TNM stage and overall survival. Functional assays showed that miR-1915-3p significantly suppressed migration, invasion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in NSCLC cells. Furthermore, miR-1915-3p directly bound to the 3′untranslated region (3′UTR) of SET and modulated the expression of SET. SET inhibition could recapitulate the inhibitory effects on cell migration, invasion and EMT of miR-1915-3p, and restoration of SET expression could abrogate these effects induced by miR-1915-3p through JNK/Jun and NF-κB signaling pathways. What’s more, miR-1915-3p expression was regulated by METTL3/YTHDF2 m6A axis through transcription factor KLF4. Conclusions These findings demonstrate that miR-1915-3p function as a tumor suppressor by targeting SET and may have an anti-metastatic therapeutic potential for lung cancer treatment.

BackgroundTo date, the COVID-19 pandemic does not appear to be overcome with new variants continuously emerging. The vaccination against COVID-19 has been the trend, but there are multiple systematic reviews on COVID-19 vaccines in patients with cancer, resulting in redundant and sub-optimal systematic reviews. There are still some doubts about efficacy and safety of the COVID-19 vaccine in cancer patients.PurposeTo identify, summarize and synthesize the available evidence of systematic reviews on response and COVID-19 vaccine safety in patients with cancer.MethodsMultiple databases were searched from their inception to May 1, 2022 to fetch the relevant articles. Study quality was assessed by AMSTAR2. The protocol of this study was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022327931).ResultsA total of 18 articles were finally included. The seroconversion rates after first dose were ranged from 37.30–54.20% in all cancers, 49.60–62.00% in solid cancers and 33.30–56.00% in hematological malignancies. The seroconversion rates after second dose were ranged from 65.30–87.70% in all cancers, 91.60–96.00% in solid cancers and 58.00–72.60% in hematological malignancies. Cancer types and types of therapy could influence vaccine response. COVID-19 vaccines were safe and well–tolerated.ConclusionsThis study suggests COVID-19 vaccine response is significantly lower in cancer patients. Number of received doses, cancer types and treatment strategies could influence response of COVID-19 vaccine in cancer patients. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and well–tolerated. Although RAD51 associated protein 1 (RAD51AP1) is crucial in genome stability maintenance, it also promotes cancer development with an unclear mechanism. In this study, we collected intact expression data of RAD51AP1 from the public database, and verified it was significantly over-expressed in 33 cancer types and correlated with poor prognosis in 13 cancer types, including glioma, adrenocortical carcinoma, lung adenocarcinoma. We further authenticated that RAD51AP1 is up-regulated in several typical cancer cell lines and promotes cancer cell proliferation in vitro. Moreover, we also demonstrated that RAD51AP1 was significantly positively related to cancer stemness score mRNAsi in 27 cancer types and broadly correlated to tumor-infiltrating immune cells in various cancers in a diverse manner. It was also negatively associated with immunophenoscore (IPS) and Estimation of STromal and Immune cells in MAlignant Tumours using Expression data (ESTIMATE) scores and positively correlated with mutant-allele tumor heterogeneity (MATH), tumor mutational burden (TMB), microsatellite instability (MSI), and PD-L1 expression in multiple cancers. The tumor stemness enhancing and tumor immune microenvironment affecting functions of RAD51AP1 might compose its carcinogenesis mechanism. Further investigations beyond the bioinformatics level should confirm these findings in each specific cancer.

Background: Recently, internet hospitals have been emerging in China, saving patients time and money during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, pharmacy services that link doctors and patients are becoming essential in improving patient satisfaction. However, the existing internet hospital pharmacy service mode relies primarily on manual operations, making it cumbersome, inefficient, and high-risk.Objective: To establish an internet hospital pharmacy service mode based on artificial intelligence (AI) and provide new insights into pharmacy services in internet hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: An AI-based internet hospital pharmacy service mode was established. Initially, prescription rules were formulated and embedded into the internet hospital system to review the prescriptions using AI. Then, the “medicine pick-up code,” which is a Quick Response (QR) code that represents a specific offline self-pick-up order, was created. Patients or volunteers could pick up medications at an offline hospital or drugstore by scanning the QR code through the window and wait for the dispensing machine or pharmacist to dispense the drugs. Moreover, the medication consultation function was also operational.Results: The established internet pharmacy service mode had four major functional segments: online drug catalog search, prescription preview by AI, drug dispensing and distribution, and AI-based medication consultation response. The qualified rate of AI preview was 83.65%. Among the 16.35% inappropriate prescriptions, 49% were accepted and modified by physicians proactively and 51.00% were passed after pharmacists intervened. The “offline self-pick-up” mode was preferred by 86% of the patients for collecting their medication in the internet hospital, which made the QR code to be fully applied. A total of 426 medication consultants were served, and 48.83% of them consulted outside working hours. The most frequently asked questions during consultations were about the internet hospital dispensing process, followed by disease diagnosis, and patient education. Therefore, an AI-based medication consultation was proposed to respond immediately when pharmacists were unavailable.Conclusion: The established AI-based internet hospital pharmacy service mode could provide references for pharmacy departments during the COVID-19 pandemic. The significance of this study lies in ensuring safe/rational use of medicines and raising pharmacists’ working efficiency.

A case of frontal plexiform schwannoma is reported. A 48-year-old female presented with a 17-year history of a mass on the left frontal region and a 3-year history of a tumor on the left eyebrow arch. Dermatological examination showed an about 8 mm×6 mm×3 mm yellow-red round nodule on the left frontal region. The nodule was firm without tenderness. A subcutaneous mobile nodule in size of about 9 mm×8 mm×4 mm was palpated above the left eyebrow arch, with a firm texture and mild tenderness. The histopathology of both lesions showed multiple tumor masses composed of spindle cells in the middle and lower dermis. Tumor masses were nodular, separated by thin fibrous connective tissue. Immunohistochemistry showed S-100 (+++), Vimentin (+), SMA (-), CD34 (-), and Ki-67 (5%+). A plexiform schwannoma was diagnosed. Surgical resection was performed, and no recurrence was found during a 3-year follow-up.

Context Baicalein and simvastatin possess similar pharmacological activities and indications. The risk of their co-administration was unclear. Objective The interaction between baicalein and simvastatin was investigated to provide reference and guidance for the clinical application of the combination of these two drugs. Materials and methods The pharmacokinetics of simvastatin was investigated in Sprague–Dawley rats (n = 6). The rats were pre-treated with 20 mg/kg baicalein for 10 days and then administrated with 40 mg/kg simvastatin. The single administration of simvastatin was set as the control group. The rat liver microsomes were employed to assess the metabolic stability and the effect of baicalein on the activity of CYP3A4. Results Baicalein significantly increased the AUC(0–t) (2018.58 ± 483.11 vs. 653.05 ± 160.10 μg/L × h) and Cmax (173.69 ± 35.49 vs. 85.63 ± 13.28 μg/L) of simvastatin. The t1/2 of simvastatin was prolonged by baicalein in vivo and in vitro. The metabolic stability of simvastatin was also improved by the co-administration of baicalein. Baicalein showed an inhibitory effect on the activity of CYP3A4 with the IC50 value of 12.03 μM, which is responsible for the metabolism of simvastatin. Discussion and conclusion The co-administration of baicalein and simvastatin may induce drug-drug interaction through inhibiting CYP3A4. The dose of baicalein and simvastatin should be adjusted when they are co-administrated.

Background: While some contacts of COVID-19 cases become symptomatic and radiographically abnormal, their SARS-CoV-2 RNA tests remain negative throughout the disease course. This prospective population-based cohort study aimed to explore their characteristics and significances.Methods: From January 22, 2020, when the first COVID-19 case was identified in Hefei, China, until July 3, a total of 14,839 people in Feidong, Hefei, with a population of ~1,081,000 underwent SARS-CoV-2 RNA testing, where 36 cases (0.2%) with confirmed COVID-19 infection (Group 1) and 27 close contacts (0.2%) testing negative for SARS-CoV-2 RNA but having both positive COVID-19 exposure histories and CT findings (Group 2) from eight clusters were prospectively identified. Another 62 non-COVID-19 pneumonia cases without any exposure history (Group 3) were enrolled, and characteristics of the three groups were described and compared. We further described a cluster with an unusual transmission pattern.Results: Fever was more common in Group 2 than Groups 1 and 3. Frequency of diarrhea in Group 1 was higher than in Groups 2 and 3. Median leucocyte, neutrophil, monocyte, and eosinophil counts were all lower in Groups 1 and 2 than in Group 3. Median D-dimer level was lower in Group 1 than in Groups 2 and 3. Total protein and albumin levels were higher in Groups 1 and 2 than in Group 3. C-reactive protein level was lower and erythrocyte sedimentation rate slower in Groups 1 and 2 than in Group 3. Combination antibacterial therapy and levofloxacin were more often used in Group 3 than in Groups 1 and 2. Lopinavir/ritonavir was more often administered in Groups 1 and 2 than in Group 3. Group 1 received more often corticosteroids than Groups 2 and 3. Group 2 received less often oxygen therapy than Groups 1 and 3. Median duration from illness onset to discharge was longer in Group 1 (27 d) than Groups 2 and 3 (both 17 d). Among contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 patient, only one had a positive virus RNA test but remained asymptomatic and had negative CT findings, and three had negative virus RNA tests but had symptoms and positive CT findings, one of whom transmitted COVID-19 to another asymptomatic laboratory-confirmed patient who had no other exposures.Conclusions: Among close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases, some present with positive symptoms and CT findings but test negative for SARS-CoV-2 RNA using common respiratory (throat swab and sputum) specimens; they have features more similar to confirmed COVID-19 cases than non-COVID-19 pneumonia cases and might have transmitted SARS-CoV-2 to others. Such cases might add to the complexity and difficulty of COVID-19 control. Our hypothesis-generating study might suggest that SARS-CoV-2 RNA testing by rRT-PCR assays of common respiratory (throat swab and sputum) specimens alone, the widely accepted “golden standard” for diagnosing COVID-19, might be sometimes insufficient, and that further studies with some further procedures (e.g., testing via bronchoalveolar lavage or specific antibodies) would be warranted for Group 2-like patients, namely, the SARS-CoV-2 RNA-negative (tested using common respiratory specimens), radiographically positive, symptomatic contacts of COVID-19 cases, to further reveal their nature.

Two-dimensional molecular crystals made of inorganic units would be desirable for their chemical and electronic properties, but have been difficult to obtain. Here the authors show the synthesis of monolayer Sb2O3 molecular crystals on mica substrates by passivator-assisted vapor deposition.

Abstract Background Angoroside C, cinnamic acid, and harpagoside are bioactive constituents in Scrophularia ningpoensis. Currently, an infrared-assisted extraction (IRAE) method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) for the analysis of bioactive constituents in this plant is lacking. Methods A method based on HPLC following IRAE has been developed for quantifying angoroside C, cinnamic acid, and harpagoside in Scrophularia ningpoensis. Four main factors, namely, extraction solvent, solid/liquid ratio, illumination time, and distance between the infrared lamp and the round-bottom flask, were optimized for extraction. Furthermore, conventional ultrasonic extraction (USE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) were also investigated to validate the developed method. Results The optimal extraction conditions were as follows: ethanol concentration, 37.5%; solid/liquid ratio, 1:25; illumination time, 10 min; and distance between infrared lamp and round-bottom flask, 3 cm. The results of method validation demonstrated that the developed method meets the requirement of analysis. Conclusion The results show that the IRAE-HPLC is a simple, accurate, and green analytical preparatory method for the potential extraction and quantification of angoroside C, cinnamic acid, and harpagoside in Scrophularia ningpoensis.

The Dresselhaus and Rashba effects have traditionally been expected only in non-centrosymmetric systems but recent work has shown that they can exist in some centrosymmetric materials. Here the authors show that the so-called hidden Rashba effect originates from wavefunction segregation enforced by local symmetries.

Citrobacter freundii refers to a fish pathogen extensively reported to be able to cause injury and high mortality. Phage therapy is considered a process to alternatively control bacterial infections and contaminations. In the present study, the isolation of a virulent bacteriophage IME-JL8 isolated from sewage was presented, and such bacteriophage was characterized to be able to infect Citrobacter freundii specifically. Phage IME-JL8 has been classified as the member of the Siphoviridae family, which exhibits the latent period of 30–40 min. The pH and thermal stability of phage IME-JL8 demonstrated that this bacteriophage achieved a pH range of 4–10 as well as a temperature range of 4, 25, and 37°C. As revealed from the results of whole genomic sequence analysis, IME-JL8 covers a double-stranded genome of 49,838 bp (exhibiting 47.96% G+C content), with 80 putative coding sequences contained. No bacterial virulence- or lysogenesis-related ORF was identified in the IME-JL8 genome, so it could be applicable to phage therapy. As indicated by the in vitro experiments, phage IME-JL8 is capable of effectively removing bacteria (the colony count decreased by 6.8 log units at 20 min), and biofilm can be formed in 24 h. According to the in vivo experiments, administrating IME-JL8 (1 × 107 PFU) was demonstrated to effectively protect the fish exhibiting a double median lethal dose (2 × 109 CFU/carp). Moreover, the phage treatment led to the decline of pro-inflammatory cytokines in carp with lethal infections. IME-JL8 was reported to induce efficient lysis of Citrobacter freundii both in vitro and in vivo, thereby demonstrating its potential as an alternative treatment strategy for infections attributed to Citrobacter freundii.

Abstract Radioluminescent materials (scintillators) are widely applied in medical imaging, nondestructive testing, security inspection, nuclear and radiation industries, and scientific research. Recently, all‐inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystal (NC) scintillators have attracted great attention due to their facile solution processability and ultrasensitive X‐ray detection, which allows for large area and flexible X‐ray imaging. However, the light yield of these perovskite NCs is relatively low because of the strong self‐absorption that reduces the light out‐coupling efficiency. Here, NCs with self‐trapped excitons emission are demonstrated to be sensitive, reabsorption‐free scintillators. Highly luminescent and stable Cs3Cu2I5 NCs with a photoluminescence quantum yields of 73.7%, which is a new record for blue emission lead‐free perovskite or perovskite‐like NCs, is produced with the assistance of InI3. The PL peak of the Cs3Cu2I5 NCs locates at 445 nm that matches with the response peak of a silicon photomultiplier. Thus, Cs3Cu2I5 NCs are demonstrated as efficient scintillators with zero self‐absorption and extremely high light yield (≈79 279 photons per MeV). Both Cs3Cu2I5 NC colloidal solution and film exhibit strong radioluminescence under X‐ray irradiation. The potential application of Cs3Cu2I5 NCs as reabsorption‐free, low cost, large area, and flexible scintillators is demonstrated by a prototype X‐ray imaging with a high spatial resolution.

The failure of the motor or controller of a motor servo system could lead to terrible casualties and property loss in fields such as aviation and transportation. Current research mainly focuses on the algorithm for fault-tolerant control and the topological structure of hardware. Such approaches may reduce the system frequency through the use of a complex algorithm or increase the system cost through the use of special components. The present paper proposes and tests a multi-redundant, permanent-magnet synchronous motor. Through the parallel connection of multiple independent windings and a supporting control method that controls each redundancy separately, the system continues to run even when the winding or controller of one redundancy suffers an open-circuit or short-circuit fault. The system controller is easy to build and minimize without special components and does not require additional algorithms.

Abstract Background A simple, rapid and accurate stability-indicating reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) was developed and validated for the determination of brimonidine tartrate in brimonidine tartrate/poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (BRI/PHEMA) drug delivery contact lenses and pharmaceutical formulations. Results Optimum chromatographic conditions for separating brimonidine tartrate from other impurities in the leaching liquor of BRI/PHEMA drug delivery contact lenses or pharmaceutical formulations have been achieved by using a Diamonsil C18 column (150 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) as a stationary phase and a mixture solution of phosphate buffer (10 mM, pH3.5) containing 0.5% triethlamine and methanol (85:15, v/v) as a mobile phase at a flow rate of 1 mL/min. The theoretical plates for the brimonidine tartrate measurement were calculated to be 8360 when detection was performed at 246 nm using a diode array detector. The proposed method was validated in accordance with ICH guidelines with respect to linearity, accuracy, precision, robustness, specificity, limit of detection and quantitation. Regression analysis showed a good correlation (R2 > 0.999) for brimonidine tartrate in the concentration range of 0.01–50 μg/mL. The peak purity factor is ≥980 for the analyte after all types of stress tests, indicating an excellent separation of brimonidine tartrate peak from other impurities. The measurement course could be completed within 10 min, which was very quick, effective and convenient. Conclusions Overall, the proposed stability-indicating method was suitable for routine quality control and drug analysis of brimonidine tartrate in BRI/PHEMA drug delivery contact lenses and other pharmaceutical formulations.

Lolitrem B is synthesized by Epichloë festucae in associations with Pooid grasses. A complex cluster of at least 10 genes (ltm genes) is required for its synthesis. An early step in this pathway is catalyzed by ltmM, a symbiosis-expressed gene. PltmM-gusA reporter gene analysis was used to monitor ltmM gene expression patterns in planta. The minimum promoter length required for high-level gusA expression in infected seedlings is in the range of 480 to 782 bp. gusA was expressed by the endophyte in all infected vegetative plant tissues and in epiphyllous hyphae. Spikelets from reproductive tillers were analyzed at different developmental stages. During pre-anthesis, gusA expression was observed in all infected floral organs except the immature gynoecium. In post-anthesis florets, gene expression occurred almost exclusively in the gynoecium. Expression of gusA by the endophyte was observed in germinating seeds 24 h postimbibition and seedlings older than 6 days postimbibition in hyphae from the mesocotyl to the tip of the emerging first leaf. This work provides a detailed analysis of the spatial and temporal expression patterns of a symbiosis-expressed gene in planta.

Glomerella cingulata, which infects a number of different hosts, gains entry to the plant tissue by means of an appressorium. Turgor pressure generated within the appressorium forces a penetration peg through the plant cuticle. A visible lesion forms as the fungus continues to grow within the host. A G. cingulata homolog (GcSTUA) of the genes encoding Asm1, Phd1, Sok2, Efg1, and StuA transcription factors in Magnaporthe grisea and other fungi was cloned and shown to be required for infection of intact apple fruit and penetration of onion epidermal cells. Mobilization of glycogen and triacylglycerol during formation of appressoria by the GcSTUA deletion mutant appeared normal and melanization of the maturing appressoria was also indistinguishable from that of the wild type. However, GcSTUA was essential for the generation of normal turgor pressure within the appressorium. As is the case for its homologs in other fungi, GcSTUA also was required for the formation of aerial hyphae, efficient conidiation, and the formation of perithecia (sexual reproductive structures).

Our previous study showed that kurarinone was the main hepatotoxic ingredient of Sophora flavescens, accumulating in the liver. This study characterized the mechanism of Sophora flavescens extract (ESF) hepatotoxicity and hepatic accumulation of kurarinone. ESF impaired hepatic function and caused fat accumulation in the liver after oral administration (1.25 and 2.5 g/kg for 14 days in rats). Serum metabolomics evaluation based on high-resolution mass spectrometry was conducted and real-time PCR was used to determine the expression levels of CPT-1, CPT-2, PPAR-α, and LCAD genes. Effects of kurarinone on triglyceride levels were evaluated in HL-7702 cells. Tissue distribution of kurarinone and kurarinone glucuronides was analyzed in rats receiving ESF (2.5 g/kg). Active uptake of kurarinone and kurarinone glucuronides was studied in OAT2-, OATP1B1-, OATP2B1-, and OATP1B3-transfected HEK293 cells. Our results revealed that after oral administration of ESF in rats, kurarinone glucuronides were actively transported into hepatocytes by OATP1B3 and hydrolyzed into kurarinone, which inhibited fatty acid β-oxidation through the reduction of l-carnitine and the inhibition of PPAR-α pathway, ultimately leading to lipid accumulation and liver injury. These findings contribute to understanding hepatotoxicity of kurarinone after oral administration of ESF.

All N atoms are involved in the formation of intermolecular N—H...N hydrogen bonds. The crystal packing exhibits also dipole–dipole interactions between the cyano groups of neighbouring molecules [C...C 3.473 (2) Å].

Abstract Inorganic metal halide perovskite system is considered as a promising candidate for applications from display to biomedical industry. Intrinsic inorganic lead halides possess small Stokes shift or self‐absorption, providing negative impact for both photo voltaic and biomedical applications. Therefore, the development of an inorganic halide perovskite system with large Stokes shift is a significant venture. This review aims to provide an updated survey of the Stokes shift phenomena in the inorganic lead halide perovskites. The first section focuses about the mechanism, the second section gives different approaches in preparing inorganic perovskites with distinct Stokes shift, while the third section highlights the potential applications in both photovoltaic and biomedical areas. This review provides deep insight about the importance and usefulness of such phenomena in inorganic lead halides, essential for various applications.
