Materials and methods: To investigate the underlying mechanisms, we established a unique model of neuropathic pain in rats by creating brachial plexus avulsion injury. Results: Behavioral test of mechanical stimulation suggested that all rats developed neuropathic pain, and the pain thresholds of bilateral hind limbs significantly decreased. GFAP expression in the cervical spinal cord appeared on day 1 post-injury and increased on day 4. Ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 expression appeared on day 1 post-injury and increased until day 28. Therefore, the brachial plexus avulsion injury model can imitate the development of neuropathic pain and maintain it.Conclusion: The activation of astrocyte and microglia in the spinal cord plays a key role in the mechanism and treatment of neuropathic pain. This article investigates a nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO)-based fault-tolerant sliding-mode control (SMC) for 2-D plane vehicular platoon systems subjected to actuator faults with unknown time-varying fault direction (UTVFD), asymmetric nonlinear actuator saturation (ANAS), nonlinear unmodeled dynamics, and unknown external disturbance. The Nussbaum-type function approach is adopted to solve the problem of actuator faults with UTVFD. The designed NDO not only can estimate the lumped disturbance accurately but also can reduce the control peaking and chattering phenomena caused by the Nussbaum-type function. Then, an adaptive saturation compensator is designed to compensate for the influence of actuator saturation on the system. In addition, by combining SMC technology with the prescribed tracking performance (PTP) approach, a distributed fault-tolerant control scheme is developed to not only ensure collision avoidance and communication connectivity but also realize a variety of driving scenarios, such as multilane vehicle merging and vehicular platoon lane changing. Finally, simulation results are presented to show the proposed scheme's effectiveness and advantages.

Cationic exchange resins (CERs) were applied for purification and clarifying process of radioactive wastewater in nuclear industry, which was a kind of sulfur-containing organic material. Molten-salt oxidation (MSO) method can be applied for the treatment of spent CERs and the absorption of acid gas (such as SO 2 ). The experiments about the molten salt destruction of the original resin and Cu ions doped resin were conducted. The transformation of organic sulfur in Cu ions doped resin was investigated. Compared with the original resin, the content of tail gas (such as CH 4 , C 2 H 4 , H 2 S and SO 2 ) released from the decomposition of Cu ions doped resin was relatively high at 323-657 °C. Sulfur elements in the form of sulfates and copper sulfides were fixed in spent salt through XRD analysis. The XPS result revealed that the portion of functional sulfonic acid groups (-SO 3 H) in Cu ions doped resin was converted into sulfonyl bridges (-SO 2 -) at 325 °C. With the enhancement of temperature, sulfonyl bridges (-SO 2 -) were further decomposed to sulfoxides sulfur (-SO-) and organic sulfide sulfur. The destruction of thiophenic sulfur to H 2 S and CH 4 was prompted by copper ions in copper sulfide. Sulfoxide were oxidized to the sulfone sulfur in molten salt. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a most common peripheral nerve entrapment neuropathy characterized by sensorimotor deficits in median nerve innervated digits. Block-design task-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have been used to investigate CTS-related neuroplasticity in the primary somatosensory cortices. However, considering the persistence of digital paresthesia syndrome caused by median nerve entrapment, spontaneous neuronal activity might provide a better understanding of CTS-related neuroplasticity, which remains unexplored. The present study aimed to investigate both local and extensive spontaneous neuronal activities with resting-state fMRI. A total of 28 bilateral CTS patients and 24 normal controls were recruited, and metrics, including amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and voxel-wise functional connectivity (FC), were used to explore synaptic activity at different spatial scales. Correlations with clinical measures were further investigated by linear regression. Decreased amplitudes of low-frequency fluctuation were observed in the bilateral primary sensory cortex (SI) and secondary sensory cortex (SII) in CTS patients (AlphaSim corrected P < .05). This was found to be negatively related to the sensory thresholds of corresponding median nerve innervated fingers. In the voxel-wise FC analysis, with predefined seed regions of interest in the bilateral SI and primary motor cortex, we observed decreased interhemispheric and increased intrahemispheric FC. Additionally, both interhemispheric and intrahemispheric FC were found to be significantly correlated with the mean ALFF.

A novel series of donor-acceptor star-shaped conjugated macroelectrolytes (CMEs), denoted as 4FTs, including anionic carboxylic acid sodium groups (4FNaT), neutral diethanolamine groups (4FNOHT), and cationic ammonium groups (4FNBrT), were designed, synthesized, and explored as an excellent platform to investigate the impact of various polar pendent groups on self-assembly behaviors. The resulting CMEs with donor-acceptor star-shaped architectures exhibited distinct light-harvesting properties. The interactions between 4FTs and TrNBr, a star-shaped monodisperse CME grafted with cationic quaternary ammonium side chains, were investigated in H2O and CH3OH using steady-state, time-resolved fluorescence, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Highly favored energy transfer has been proven by the excellent spectral overlap between TrNBr fluorescence and 4FTs absorptions which can be tuned by adjusting the pendent polar groups and solvents. It is suggested that self-assembled structures are formed between TrNBr and 4FNaT, while there is no obvious change for TrNBr/4FNOHT and TrNBr/4FNBrT in both H2O and CH3OH at low concentrations (<10(-6) M). This result is confirmed by the change of the TrNBr and 4FTs fluorescence properties and the time-resolved fluorescence data. The overall results manifest that at low concentrations the self-assembly between TrNBr and 4FTs is dominated by the electrostatic interactions. This study suggests that the functionalization of pendent polar groups of star-shaped CMEs has proven to be effective to modulate the self-assembly behaviors in dilute solutions and thus provide a strategy to further manage the optoelectronic properties.

A great many studies have investigated the -1082G/A polymorphism (rs1800896) in the interleukin-10 gene (IL10) with SLE susceptibility, but the results are inconsistent and inconclusive. The aim of this meta-analysis was in order to more precisely estimate the relationship. The databases of Pubmed and Web of Science updated to Oct, 2012 were retrieved. Odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (95%CI.) as effect size were calculated by fixed-effect model. Analysis for allele contrast of stratification by ethnicity in either Asian or Caucasian, as well as in overall population indicated no significant association (Overall: OR 1.096, 95%CI. 0.995-1.207; Asian: OR 1.204, 95%CI.: 0.944-1.535; Caucasian: OR 1.075, 95%CI.: 0.961-1.202). Analysis for recessive model showed no association in overall populations and in Caucasian (Overall: OR 1.135, 95%CI.: 0.945-1.362; Caucasian: OR 1.069, 95%CI.: 0.882-1.296), but significant association in Asian (OR: 2.848; 95%CI.: 1.194-6.791). Analysis for dominant model indicated that the variant G allele carriers (GG+GA) may have increased the risk of SLE when compared with the homozygote AA in overall populations and in Caucasian (Overall: OR 1.203, 95%CI.: 1.029-1.407; Caucasian: OR 1.233, 95%CI.: 1.014-1.499), but not in Asian (OR: 1.154; 95%CI.: 0.856-1.557). Significant association was found by using homozygote contrast model in overall populations and Asian (Overall: OR 1.303, 95%CI.: 1.031-1.648; Asian: OR 3.206, 95%CI.: 1.241-8.284), while no association was found in Caucasian (OR: 1.209; 95%CI.: 0.940-1.556). The results provided evidence for the association between the IL10 -1082G/A polymorphism and the risk of SLE. Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease attributing to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Abnormal expression/function of type I interferons has been demonstrated with the pathogenesis of SLE, especially IFN-α, which can be regulated by IFN regulatory factor 7 (IRF7). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) near/in IRF7 have been substantiated related to onset of SLE, moreover, regulation of IRF7 expression/function has been found important in SLE. Therefore, we will discuss the association of IRF7 and SLE based on recent understandings to render more information about the mechanisms of IRF7 might perform in., (Copyright © 2012. Background: Recently, the new generation of metal-on-metal total hip resurfacing arthroplasty is well known for preserving the proximal femoral bone stock, minimizing the risk of postoperative dislocation using large femoral heads, and expecting low wear of metal-on-metal articulation for longer prosthesis survival. It also has the advantage in biomechanical loading in the proximal femur. The osteoarthritis secondary to developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) has been the most common reason for total hip arthroplasty. Most of the patients are young and active, who require improved range of motion of the hip besides relief of the pain, even expect to resume the ability to run and jump after the joint arthroplasty, thus to be allowed an active lifestyle. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the early outcome of resurfacing arthroplasty for the mild DDH cases (Crowe type I and II)., Methods: Between September 2005 and May 2007, twenty-one consecutive patients (twenty-six hips) with the diagnosis of osteoarthritis secondary to DDH underwent metal-on-metal resurfacing arthroplasty. The average age at the time of surgery was 46.5 years (range, 37-59 years). Six patients (28.6%) were male and fifteen (71.4%) were female. Clinical and radiographic results were observed. The follow-up was performed at 6 weeks, 3, 6, 9 months and then yearly., Results: All patients were followed for a mean of 18 months (9-29 months). During the follow-up period no complications, such as dislocation of hip joints, infection or femoral neck fracture occurred. The clinical outcomes, as rated with the Harris hip score, improved significantly compared with the preoperative ratings. The mean postoperative Harris hip score was 90.7, compared to 35.5 preoperatively. The radiographic analysis showed that all prostheses were fixed with no radiolucencies. All of the patients who had equal limb lengths preoperatively had equal lengths postoperatively. Of the nine patients with preoperative limb-length discrepancy of 0.8 to 1.2 cm, all regained equal limb length postoperatively. In addition the pain was nearly completely relieved, the range of motion was remarkably improved and no restriction was needed after operation regarding early exercise., Conclusions: The new generation of metal-on-metal resurfacing arthroplasty may be a reasonable option for DDH of the Crowe types I and II.
