A detector that can distinguish alpha from beta particles is valuable for detecting alpha emitters from contamination at and around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP), and other nuclear facility decontamination sites. We developed a prototype alpha/beta particle detector using a pulse shape discrimination (PSD) capable organic scintillator , a silicon photomultiplier, and a waveform digitizer. The charge integration PSD technique was used to separate alpha and beta particles. We compared the PSD figure of merit (FOM) values of two scintillators (EJ-299-33 and stilbene), and found that the stilbene ( FOM = 1 . 61 ) performance was superior to the EJ-299-33 ( FOM = 0 . 56 ) performance, measured using an 241 Am source (5.5 MeV alpha particle emission) and a 90 Sr source. Additionally, the stilbene showed good energy resolution (23.6 %FWHM for 5.5 MeV alpha particles). In the pulse height spectrum for the 90 Sr ∕ 90 Y source, the lower energy portion ( 90 Sr ) and the higher energy portion ( 90 Y ) could be separated. To demonstrate the detector’s separation ability, the 232 Th source was measured. The measurements demonstrated the alpha and beta particle separation, and alpha and beta spectra were obtained simultaneously, which was not possible when using commercial detectors such as a ZnS(Ag) scintillation detector.

Background The bactericidal effect of disinfectants against biofilms is essential to reduce potential endoscopy-related infections caused by contamination. Here, we investigated the bactericidal effect of a high-level disinfectant, peracetic acid (PAA), against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm models in vitro. Methods S. aureus and P. aeruginosa biofilms were cultured at 35 °C for 7 days with catheter tubes. The following high-level disinfectants (HLDs) were tested: 0.3% PAA, 0.55% ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA), and 2.0% alkaline-buffered glutaraldehyde (GA). Biofilms were exposed to these agents for 1–60 min and observed after 5 min and 30 min by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing concern for human and animal health. Public awareness of these issues has contributed to increased demand for organic food. In poultry production, there are 3 major production types: no antibiotic ever, organic, and conventional. Organics have been considered safer alternatives that carry fewer antibiotic-resistant bacteria and have less incidence of stable resistance. In this study, we examined the impact of organic and conventional production practices on the resistance patterns of the intestinal microbiome of chickens. Culture and sensitivity analysis performed on the cecal contents were compared between organic and conventionally grown chickens from identical parent stock collected in July and September. Background Mandibulectomy typically involves rigid reconstruction using autologous bone and titanium plates. However, in cases with poor performance status or complications as well as the elderly, choosing the optimal surgical method is difficult. For such cases in our hospital, we do not perform rigid reconstruction but opt for only soft tissue reconstruction or primary suturing at the defect site. Here, we retrospectively investigated cases where primary suturing was applied and discuss the utility of the procedure. Methods This retrospective study targeted cases of stage T4 lower gingival carcinoma treated with segmental mandibulectomy and primary suturing at the defect site between 1992 and 2018. Survey items were operative time, blood loss volume, perioperative complications, length of hospitalization, and food intake at discharge. Results There were 186 cases for which segmental mandibulectomy was performed during the target period, and 13 cases for which primary suturing was also performed. Median operative time was 210 (range, 124-328) min. Median blood loss was 212 (101-867) mL. Six cases had complications during the perioperative period, but in all cases cure was achieved by conservative treatment. Median length of hospitalization was 32 (20-49) days. All cases could tolerate oral intake at discharge. Conclusions Segmental mandibulectomy without reconstruction may be a viable surgical option for cases where free tissue reconstruction is not possible. The Kalahari Goldridge deposit is located in the Archaean Kraaipan greenstone belt in the north-west province of South Africa. Gold mineralization in this deposit is hosted within banded iron formation which is flanked by a mafic schist in the footwall and clastic metasedimentary units in the hanging wall. Data from carbonate minerals from mineralized veins and bulk rock from the A and D zone ore bodies have helped to define the ultimate origin of the ore-forming fluids and their migration history. Carbon isotope ratios of carbonates from both the A and D zone ore bodies have tight clustering from )7.6 to )5.3& that indicates a unique origin for the ore-forming fluids associated with the mineralization at Kalahari Goldridge. The d 18 O values of the carbonates have been influenced by temperature gradients and variable degrees of fluid‐rock interaction promoting oxygen isotope exchange between ore fluid and host rocks. Minimum 87 Sr ⁄ 86 Sr ratio values of 0.70354 in mineralized veins are most consistent with ore-forming fluids being relatively pristine with a mantle origin. Strontium and the corresponding ore-forming fluids were most likely derived from mantle-derived magmatic rocks probably represented by the meta-basaltic rocks that underlie the ferruginous package in the Kraaipan greenstone belt. Strontium isotopic composition of vein carbonates show considerable variation in 87 Sr ⁄ 86 Sr ratios ranging from 0.70354 to 0.73914. This is consistent with an ore fluid composition that has been modified by the addition of radiogenic Sr possibly during passage of fluid through siliciclastic country rock concomitant with the observed hydrothermal alteration.

Intestinal tracts of broilers and turkeys from 10 conventional broiler farms and 10 conventional turkey farms, where antimicrobials were routinely used, and from 5 organic broiler farms and 5 organic turkey farms, where antimicrobials had never been used, were collected and cultured for Campylobacter species. A total of 694 Campylobacter isolates from the conventional and organic poultry operations were tested for antimicrobial resistance to nine antimicrobial agents by the agar dilution method. Although Campylobacter species were highly prevalent in both the conventional and organic poultry operations, the antimicrobial resistance rates were significantly different between the organic operations and the conventional operations. Less than 2% of Campylobacter strains isolated from organically raised poultry were resistant to fluoroquinolones, while 46% and 67% of Campylobacter isolates from conventionally raised broilers and conventionally raised turkeys, respectively, were resistant to these antimicrobials. In addition, a high frequency of resistance to erythromycin (80%), clindamycin (64%), kanamycin (76%), and ampicillin (31%) was observed among Campylobacter isolates from conventionally raised turkeys. None of the Campylobacter isolates obtained in this study was resistant to gentamicin, while a large number of the isolates from both conventional and organic poultry operations were resistant to tetracycline. Multidrug resistance was observed mainly among Campylobacter strains isolated from the conventional turkey operation (81%). Findings from this study clearly indicate the influence of conventional and organic poultry production practices on antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter on poultry farms.

Knemidocoptes mutans, commonly known as the scaly-leg mite, causes disease in various avian species. In a peep of bantam chickens, proliferative skin lesions were observed on the shanks of 6 of 29 birds, with digit necrosis observed in some birds. Histologic examination of the necrotic digits revealed Knemidocoptes species in the stratum corneum. No new cases of scaly-leg mite infection occurred in the flock after administration of ivermectin, and treatment halted the progression of the disease process in infected chickens. This case report documents that severe Knemidocoptes infection can be associated with digit necrosis in chickens.

Riemerella anatipestifer is a gram-negative bacteria that can cause disease in a wide variety of wild and domesticated birds, especially waterfowl. The infection can be peracute, acute, or chronic. Although various routes of transmission have been proposed, to date, there is little information on the effects of route of transmission and challenge dosage on R. anatipestifer infection. Hence, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of route of inoculation and challenge dosage on R. anatipestifer infection and pathology. To achieve this objective, one hundred forty-seven 14-day-old white Pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) were equally divided into 13 experimental groups (12 challenge and 1 control group). Each challenge group had 11 ducks. The control group had 15 ducks. Four routes of inoculation were evaluated (intranasal, oral, subcutaneous, and intravenous). Three dosage levels were evaluated for each inoculation route (10(2), 10(4), and 106 colony forming units [CFU]/ml). At the 106 CFU/ml dosage level, mortality was most associated with the subcutaneous (91%) and intravenous (82%) routes, followed by the nasal (18%) and oral (9%) routes. A unique pathologic lesion was found in the bursa of Fabricius and spleen of affected birds. Within the spleen and bursa of Fabricius, there were varying degrees of lymphoid depletion and necrosis within the cortical and medullary regions. These pathologic lesions have not been previously reported in ducks with R. anatipestifer infection.

Three air contaminants that may have serious health consequences to humans and poultry are ammonia, dust, and aerosolized bacteria. This study measured ammonia concentrations, dust concentrations, and the presence or absence of aerosolized Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli inside and outside five commercial layer facilities. The average outside ammonia concentration measurements decreased as the distance from the facility increased from 10 to 40 ft. The measurements at 10 ft from the facilities were consistently higher than the average concentrations inside the facilities. The ammonia measurement trends inside of the facilities were affected by the temperature-dependent ventilation systems. Average dust concentrations inside the five facilities were consistently below 2 mg/m3. Three facilities also experienced average outside dust concentrations at all measured distances below 2 mg/m3. Two facilities had relatively high average dust measurements at 10 ft from ventilation fans (32.12 mg/m3 and 75.18 mg/m3). Escherichia coli and Salmonella were isolated from the air inside all five facilities and outside the facilities up to 40 ft from the ventilation fans. In condusion, dust concentrations may pose the largest risk to human and animal health at 10 ft away from the poultry facilities; risks associated with ammonia inhalation are greatest inside facilities during the coolest months of the year; and aerosolized bacteria are found inside and outside poultry facilities, but further work is needed to quantify the bacteria to further assess the health risk related to this issue.

Resumen RESUMEN. En cuesta de parasitos y patogenos bacterianos en aves acuaticas de vida libre en zoologicos. Con el fin de determinar si las aves acuaticas de vida libre que residen en los zoologicos representan un riesgo sanitario para otros animales, visitantes y empleados, se tomaron y se cultivaron 450 muestras fecales para detectar la presencia de Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp y Pasteurella multocida. Tambien se realizo una encuesta para endoparasitos que infectan las aves acuaticas. De las muestras analizadas, 67%, 42% y 1.7% resultaron positivas a E. coli, C. jejuni, y Salmonella spp., respectivamente. No se aislo P. multocida de la poblacion muestreada. Las pruebas de susceptibilidad para los aislamientos bacterianos demostraron que la mayoria de los aislamientos fueron susceptibles a los antibioticos que se ensayaron. Digital TV broadcasting from the stratosphere was tested using an unmanned aerial vehicle, a Pathfinder Plus. A television transmitter installed under the wing transmitted a UHF band signal as the vehicle flew at an altitude of 20 km. The Japanese digital terrestrial broadcasting standard (ISDB-T) was used for transmission. The 13.5-hour flight time included 3 hours of transmission testing. The transmitting equipment worked as expected in spite of the cold and low-atmospheric-pressure environment. Reception at the ground station was satisfactory even when the ISDB-T parameter set used was the one least robust under poor channel conditions.

The normal flora of free-living red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii) has not been well described. We trapped and banded 10 free-living red-tailed hawks and 10 free-living Cooper's hawks during the 1992 fall migration in Marin County, CA, USA. Three choanal and 3 cloacal swabs were collected from each bird to characterize the aerobic bacterial flora. Cloacal swabs were obtained from an additional 24 free-living birds, 13 red-tailed hawks and 11 Cooper's hawks, specifically for isolation of Salmonella species. Moreover, 3 choanal and 3 cloacal swabs were collected for comparison from 7 captive red-tailed hawks and 3 captive Cooper's hawks. A 1-year-old golden comet hen (Gallus gallus forma domestica) was presented because of an enlarged abdomen, cessation in egg production, difficulty in ambulating, and difficulty roosting. Results of radiographs and ultrasound examination revealed a radiolucent oval area in the right coelom and fluid with flocculent debris throughout the coelomic cavity. Escherichia coli and Proteus species were cultured from a sample of the fluid. Antibiotic therapy was temporarily beneficial, but the problem persisted and the hen was euthanatized. At necropsy, the oviduct was impacted with yellow caseous material. The diagnosis was colibacillosis and egg yolk peritonitis, which may have originated from an impacted oviduct.

Gene therapies may be promising for the treatment of peritoneal fibrosis (PF) in subjects undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). However, a method of delivery of treatment genes to the peritoneum is lacking. We attempted to develop an in vivo small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery system with liposome-based nanoparticles (NPs) to the peritoneum to inhibit PF. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1-siRNAs encapsulated in NPs (TGF-β1-siRNAs-NPs) dissolved in PD fluid were injected into the peritoneum of mice with PF three times a week for 2 weeks. TGF-β1-siRNAs-NPs knocked down TGF-β1 expression significantly in the peritoneum and inhibited peritoneal thickening with fibrous changes. TGF-β1-siRNAs-NPs also inhibited the increase of expression of α-smooth muscle actin-positive myofibroblasts. These results suggest that the TGF-β1-siRNA delivery system with NPs described here could be an effective therapeutic option for PF in subjects undergoing PD.

This study determined the occurrence and identity of chewing lice (Mallophaga) on 35 clinically healthy raptors presented with traumatic injuries at the California Raptor Center during the summers of 1993 and 1994. Samples of lice were collected and preserved in 70% ethanol during physical examinations within 24 hours of admission. Eleven species of chewing lice were collected and identified from 7 species of raptors, including 2 long-term captive birds. All louse species except 1 were on their usual, previously documented raptor hosts. Four of the 10 species of free-living birds examined had no lice, but their sample sizes were small (1–3 birds each). At least 1 bird from each of the other 6 raptor species harbored some lice, but only 2 species, an American kestrel (Falco sparverius) and a barn owl (Tyto alba) were sampled in useful numbers. Salmonella Enteritidis colonizes the intestinal tract of poultry and causes foodborne illness in humans. Reduction of Salmonella Enteritidis colonization in the intestinal tract of poultry reduces potential carcass contamination during slaughter. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an avian-specific probiotic combined with Salmonella Enteritidis-, Salmonella Typhimurium-, and Salmonella Heidelberg-specific antibodies on the cecal colonization and organ invasion of Salmonella Enteritidis in broiler as well as on body weights. The treatment group was defined as chicks spray-vaccinated with Avian Pac Plus at the hatchery and given Avian Pac Plus for the first 3 days after placement. An intermediate treatment was given at 10 and 14 days, 2 days prior to vaccination and 2 days postvaccination. All birds were vaccinated with Newcastle disease vaccine, La Sota virus (one drop/eye) at 12 days of age. A final treatment was given 3 days preslaughter. The control group was defined as chicks not given Avian Pac Plus at any time. Six hours after oral administration of the probiotic suspension (treatment group) or water (control group) at placement, the chicks were challenged with Salmonella Enteritidis. All chickens were orally inoculated with 0.25 ml of Salmonella Enteritidis that contained 4 x 10(7) CFU/1.0 ml. Cecal colonization and organ invasion were evaluated for Salmonella Enteritidis on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 10, 17, 24, 31, 38, and 41. The probiotic-treated group had a significantly lower concentration of Salmonella Enteritidis cecal colonization at days 3, 7, 10, 17, 24, 31, 38, and 41 when compared to the nontreated, control group (P0.05). Similarly, there was a significant difference (P0.05) in the isolation of Salmonella Enteritidis from the internal organs (liver and spleen) when probiotic-treated and nonprobiotic-treated groups were compared. There was no significant difference (P0.05) in the mean body weight between the two experimental groups at each collection period. These results indicated that a combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus faecium, and Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Salmonella Heidelberg-Specific antibodies have a beneficial effect in reducing the colonization of Salmonella Enteritidis in market-aged broilers.

SUMMARY: To determine how much the radiation dose can be reduced in multidetector row CTA using a QDS, we performed CTA at various exposure settings using a vascular phantom simulating various aneurysms with superimposed bone skull structures, and postprocessed the image data with QDS. Our results demonstrated that the radiation dose of CTA can be reduced by at least 25% and the image quality for visualizing aneurysms can be preserved by applying the QDS.

An aerobic oxidation of dibenzothiophene and related compounds using a catalytic amount of ruthenium chloride in hydrocarbon solvents at 80°C for 20 h gave the corresponding sulfones in almost quantitative yields. The reaction might proceed via autoxidation of solvents to hydroperoxides and the reaction of sulfur compounds with the resulting hydroperoxides.

Salmonella typhimurium colonizes the intestinal tract of poultry and causes food-borne illness in humans. Reduction of S. typhimurium colonization in the intestinal tract of poultry reduces potential carcass contamination during slaughter. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an avian-specific probiotic and S. typhimurium-specific antibodies on the colonization of S. typhimurium in broilers and on body weights. Broiler chicks were spray-vaccinated at the hatchery with the commercial product, Avian Pac Plus, which contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus faecium, and S. typhimurium-specific antibodies. At placement. these chicks were administered Avian Pac Plus in the water. Six hours postplacement, chicks were orally challenged with 1.8 X 10 7 CFU of S. typhimurium. Chicks were administered Avian Pac Plus for two additional days postchallenge. Chicks were evaluated for S. typhimurium colonization and shedding every 3 to 4 days for the first 2 weeks and every 7 days for 6 weeks. The mean cecal and colonic concentration of S. typhimurium from the Avian Pac Plus-treated group was significantly lower at day 31 (P = 0.0001), day 38 (P = 0.0005). and day 43 (P = 0.0001) than the nontreated control group. These results indicated that a combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus faecium, and S. typhimurium-specific antibodies have a beneficial effect in reducing the colonization of S. typhimurium in market-aged broilers.

Campylobacter jejuni was monitored in 4 chicken farms during the period 2003 to 2006 to elucidate the mechanisms of transmission. Three farms (1 to 3), located at least 14 km from each other, belonged to an integrated poultry company, which also provided the farms with day-old chicks from several hatcheries as well as chicken feed. Another farm (4), which belonged to a different company, was located 270 m from farm 1. A total of 206 C. jejuni isolates obtained from the 4 farms were classified into 10 flaA-based RFLP types. Identical RFLP types were found in isolates obtained from chickens originating from multiple hatcheries and reared in different chicken houses on individual farms. Flocks were colonized by strains with 1 or 2 RFLP types in each production cycle, sometimes differing between cycles. Identical RFLP types were found in isolates obtained from the environment around the chicken houses. Using multilocus sequence typing, strains with different RFLP types could be distinguished from each other. Identical RFLP and multilocus sequence typing profiles were found in isolates obtained from farms 1 and 4, and from farms 1 and 2. These results suggest that C. jejuni in these farms comes from common sources external to the farms, even if the farms belong to different companies and obtain chicks from different suppliers.

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in chickens is a good indicator of the strains prevalent in their environment because they feed from ground. The prevalence of T. gondii was determined in 118 free-range chickens from 14 counties in Ohio and in 11 chickens from a pig farm in Massachusetts. Toxoplasma gondii antibodies (or = 1: 5) were found using the modified agglutination test (MAT) in 20 of 118 chickens from Ohio. Viable T. gondii was recovered from 11 of 20 seropositive chickens by bioassay of their hearts and brains into mice. The parasite was not isolated from tissues of 63 seronegative (or = 1:5) chickens by bioassay in cats. Hearts, brains, and muscles from legs and breast of the 11 chickens from the pig farm in Massachusetts were fed each to a T. gondii-negative cat. Eight cats fed chicken tissues shed oocysts; the 3 cats that did not shed oocysts were fed tissues of chickens with MAT titers of 1:5 or less. Tachyzoites of 19 isolates of T. gondii from Ohio and Massachusetts were considered avirulent for mice. Of 19 isolates genotyped, 5 isolates were type II and 14 were type III; mixed types and type I isolates were not found.

Kinetic magnetic resonance images (kMRIs) of 587 lumbar and 459 cervical spines of symptomatic patients in axially loaded, upright neutral (0 degrees), flexion (40 degrees), and extension (-20 degrees) positions were evaluated. Imaging took 10 to 12 minutes to complete in each position. Cervical kinematics were significantly affected by intervertebral disc degeneration, cervical cord compression, and sagittal alignment of the cervical spine. kMRI was effective in diagnosing lumbar disc herniations that are often missed using conventional MRI. kMRI is effective for diagnosing, evaluating, and managing degenerative disease or injury within the spine.

The correlation and the level of agreement between the standardized agar dilution and the agar disk diffusion methods for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Campylobacter were investigated. A high-level agreement between the two methods was evident for aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones, while a low-level agreement was observed for other antibiotics.

A flock of breeding ring-necked pheasants received feed with a high selenium content. Within 4 days of eating the toxic feed, the rate of egg production began to decrease, and bird aggression increased. Approximately 12% of the hens died within a week. Necropsy of the hens revealed colorless fluid around the heart and a friable, but otherwise normal, liver. The rapid onset of the problem and signs noted at necropsy suggested toxicosis. Based on analysis, the feed contained 9.3 ppm of selenium. Selenium toxicity was consistent with the histologic diagnosis of degenerative cardiomyopathy, vacuolar degeneration of hepatocytes, and centrilobular hepatic necrosis. After 8 days, the toxic feed was removed and replaced with fresh feed. Egg production, which had dropped to 50%, returned to normal within 10 days of feed replacement. Hatchability of eggs laid from days 8 to 14 after delivery of the toxic feed was 35%. Approximately 10% of the chicks that hatched had deformed beaks and abnormal eyes. Many of the chicks that died in the shell had deformities, bringing the total to more than 50% of all embryos that developed. The selenium content of eggs that had no embryonic development was 2.05 ppm. Hatchability of eggs laid from days 21 to 28 after the toxic feed was delivered was almost 80%, which was slightly lower than normal. The selenium content of these eggs was 0.30 ppm. These results show the rapid onset and correction of selenium toxicity and suggest that specific embryologic defects are diagnostic for selenium toxicity.

The goal of this study was to characterize Pasteurella multocida isolated from rabbits. Five hundred and fifty-three apparently healthy rabbits were sampled for this study. Nasal swabs were collected from each rabbit for P. multocida isolation and identification. Isolates were further characterized by capsular and somatic antigens and genomic DNA fingerprinting. Thirty-nine P. multocida isolates were recovered from 553 rabbits (7%). Capsular typing was done by depolymerization of P. multocida capsule by Staphylococcus aureus hyaluronidase and by disc diffusion with mucopolysaccharidase enzymes (heparinase III, chondroitinase AC, and hyaluronidase). Thirty-one (79%) of the isolates were capsular type A, and 8 isolates (21%) had untypable (UT) capsules. The gel-diffusion precipitin test was used to determine the somatic type of P. multocida isolates. Nineteen isolates were somatic serotype 3 (49%), 12 were serotype 1 (31%), 1 was serotype 2, 2 were serotype 5, 2 were serotype 12 with a weak reaction to antiserum raised against serotype 7 (5%), and 1 was serotype 4. Two of the isolates (5%) were UT. Restriction endonuclease analysis of the DNA of the isolates revealed 7 distinct profiles by digestion with HindIII, and 12 profiles were obtained with HpaII, whereas digestion with EcoRI did not differentiate between any of the P. multocida DNA isolates studied. The DNA restriction endonuclease enzyme HpaII was found more useful for differentiating between DNA fingerprints of P. multocida rabbit isolates. However, no correlation between capsular type, somatic serotypes, and DNA fingerprints was seen in this study.

Studies of C-peptide cellular effects show that not only the full-length native peptide but also specific C-terminal fragments are biologically active in in vitro systems. In the present study, the effect of five C-peptide fragments and the native peptide on whole-body glucose turnover was studied in streptozotocin diabetic rats using the insulin clamp technique. Insulin was infused intravenously at 18 pmol kg(-1) min(-1) for 90 min and blood glucose concentration was clamped at 8 and 4 mM in diabetic and non-diabetic animals. A steady state was reached during the last 30 min of the study period. Rat C-peptide II and fragments comprising residues 27-31 and 28-31 were effective in augmenting glucose turnover in diabetic rats (+100% to 150%), while no significant effects were seen for segments 1-26, 11-19 and 11-15. The metabolic clearance rate for glucose during infusion of C-peptide or fragments 27-31 and 28-31 in diabetic rats was similar to that seen in non-diabetic animals. We conclude that C-terminal tetra- and pentapeptides, but not fragments from the middle segment of C-peptide, are as effective as the full-length peptide in stimulating whole-body glucose turnover in diabetic rats.

SUMMARY. This case report examines an Arbor Acres female × Peterson male crossbred 6-wk-old female broiler chicken with four legs, two cloacae, and three ceca. The intestines occupied the caudodorsal portion of the abdominal cavity with three ceca attached to the terminal end of the ileum. The left lateral cecum was larger and had a divided distal end that terminated into 2-cm-long blind sacs. The rectum was dilated and divided into two cloacae that each opened on the dorsolateral aspect of both the right and left cloacal elevator muscles. The two extra legs were attached to the pygostyle by cartilage and skin tissue. Both femoral heads of the extraneous legs were fused together. The extra legs were smaller in size (approximately 17 cm in length) compared with the normal legs (approximately 22 cm). The femoral heads of the two normal legs were disarticulated from the acetabulum.

Pulmonary artery growth after a systemic-pulmonary shunt was angiographically evaluated in 19 out of 35 patients. The mean age of the subjects at the time of the initial operation was 18+/-18 months including 12 patients under a year old. The preoperative diagnosis was tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) in 10 patients, TOF plus pulmonary atresia in five and transposition of great arteries in four. A Blalock-Taussig shunt (BTS) operation was performed in 16 patients (15 classical and 1 modified) and a central shunt was performed in three patients as an initial operation. The preoperative pulmonary artery index (PAI) was 129+/-42 in all patients and there were no significant differences between patients under or over a year old (139+/-42 vs. 115+/-49). Postoperative angiography was performed 32+/-13 months after the surgery. Room air arterial O2 pressure increased significantly from 29+/-5 mmHg to 42+/-5 mmHg just after an initial palliative shunt operation. PAI change in patients under a year old was 214+/-73%, which was higher than 145+/-27% in patients over a year old after a palliative shunt operation. On the ipsilateral side, PAI change was almost the same between patients under and over a year old. On the contralateral side, PAI change in patients under a year old was 216+/-68%, which was significantly higher than the 116+/-21% in patients over one year old. There was a significant negative correlation (r=-0.65, p0.05) between PAI change and arterial O2 pressure as measured just after a palliative shunt operation. In conclusion, a palliative shunt operation prior to a year old is desirable in order to produce sufficient and bilateral pulmonary artery growth.

A suspension of human faeces (FS) and its anaerobic culture (FC), bacterial metabolic products and organic acids were examined for inhibitory effects on growth and verotoxin 2 (VT2) production of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in vitro. FS and FC showed a marked inhibitory activity to growth and production of VT2 by E. coli O157:H7 under anaerobic conditions. They may have both bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects on E. coli O157. The growth of E. coli O157 was markedly suppressed by acetic, propionic and butyric acids compared with hydrochloric acid and lactic acid at concentrations between 25 mm and 40 mm, being proportional to the pH values. At pH 5.5, 40 mm of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) almost completely inhibited the growth of E. coli O157. SCFAs markedly inhibited the growth of E. coli O157 at pH 6.0 rather than pH 7.0. Propionic acid is likely to be more suppressive to E. coli than acetic and butyric acids. The production of VT2 was approximately proportional to the growth of E. coli O157. However, incubation for 24 h in vitro showed that the growth and VT2 production of E. coli O157 decreased but were not completely inhibited at pH 6.5 and 7.0 in a mixture of acetic, propionic and butyric acids at a physiological concentration (110 mm, 60:25:25, respectively, in molar ratio). It is probable that the colonic microflora could contribute to a reduction of E. coli O157:H7 infections via the activation of intestinal fermentation by dietary manipulation or something similar to give pH 6.0 or

Sixty-six replacing growth-type early lung adenocarcinomas, measuring 2 cm or less across their greatest dimension, were used to investigate allelic losses at eight loci on the eight chromosomes carrying the principal cancer-associated genes. In total, 2 (16.7%) of 12 type A tumors (localized bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, LBAC) and 11 (39.3%) of 28 type B tumors (LBAC with alveolar collapse), which correspond to early lung adenocarcinomas including cancers in situ, showed allelic losses in one or more of the regions examined. In contrast, 25 (96.2%) of 26 type C tumors (LBAC with active fibroblastic proliferation), which correspond to small but advanced tumors, showed allelic losses in one or more regions. The change in histology from type A to type C was characterized by a significant rise in the incidence of allelic losses (P0.01). Deletions of 3p, 17p, 18q, and 22q increased significantly during malignant progression. In type C tumors that showed heterogeneous histological features, the tumor cells in the central fibrotic areas exhibited more allelic losses than those in the peripheral bronchioloalveolar growths and were, therefore, considered to have progressed to a more advanced stage than the tumor cells in the peripheral regions.

Poultry are considered the major reservoir for Campylobacter jejuni , a leading bacterial cause of human food-borne diarrhea. To understand the ecology of C. jejuni and develop strategies to control C. jejuni infection in the animal reservoir, we initiated studies to examine the potential role of anti- Campylobacter maternal antibodies in protecting young broiler chickens from infection by C. jejuni . Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the prevalence of anti- C. jejuni antibodies in breeder chickens, egg yolks, and broilers from multiple flocks of different farms were examined. High levels of antibodies to the organism were detected in serum samples of breeder chickens and in egg yolk contents. To determine the dynamics of anti- Campylobacter maternal antibody transferred from yolks to hatchlings, serum samples collected from five broiler flocks at weekly intervals from 1 to 28 or 42 days of age were also examined by ELISA. Sera from the 1-day and 7-day-old chicks showed high titers of antibodies to C. jejuni . Thereafter, antibody titers decreased substantially and were not detected during the third and fourth weeks of age. The disappearance of anti- Campylobacter maternal antibodies during 3 to 4 weeks of age coincides with the appearance of C. jejuni infections observed in many broiler chicken flocks. As shown by immunoblotting, the maternally derived antibodies recognized multiple membrane proteins of C. jejuni ranging from 19 to 107 kDa. Moreover, in vitro serum bactericidal assays showed that anti- Campylobacter maternal antibodies were active in antibody-dependent complement-mediated killing of C. jejuni . Together, these results highlight the widespread presence of functional anti- Campylobacter antibodies in the poultry production system and provide a strong rationale for further investigation of the potential role of anti- C. jejuni maternal antibodies in protecting young chickens from infection by C. jejuni .

Ascaridia dissimilis, a roundworm in turkeys, has been noted with increased frequency in commercial turkeys. Because infected turkeys can shed A. dissimilis ova in their feces, the potential exists for the external surface of turkey eggshells to be contaminated with A. dissimilis ova. The objectives of this study were to determine the presence of and recover A. dissimilis ova on the external surface of the turkey egg. In Experiment 1, turkey eggs were collected from naturally infected flocks, and eggs were processed by a sodium hydroxide procedure to recover any A. dissimilis ova on the external egg surface. In Experiment 2, the external surface of the turkey eggs was inoculated with 116 A. dissimilis ova/g feces, and eggshells were sampled every 3 days until 28 days of incubation to assess the recovery of A. dissimilis ova from the eggshell. In Experiment 1, of the 36 eggs examined from a flock naturally infected with A. dissimilis, one egg had an A. dissimilis ovum on its external eggshell surface. Experiment 2 demonstrated that A. dissimilis ova can be recovered from the external egg surface after a 28-day incubation period in the incubator. Ova recovery declined from an average of 62 A. dissimilis ova/turkey egg at day 2 of incubation to an average of 3 A. dissimilis ova/turkey egg at day 28 of incubation.

The oropharyngeal regions of 680 meat turkeys and 55 breeder turkeys from nine outbreak farms, three history-outbreak farms, and 19 nonoutbreak farms in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania were cultured to determine the prevalence of Pasteurella multocida in turkeys. Pasteurella multocida was recovered from 32 out of 105 turkeys belonging to outbreak farms. Pasteurella multocida was not recovered from either history-outbreak or nonoutbreak farms. Characterization via capsular and somatic serotyping, biotyping, restriction endonuclease analysis, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on all recovered P. multocida isolates. Pasteurella multocida serotype A:1 and somatic serotype 1 with an un-typable capsular serogroup (UT:1) were the most common serogroups found. All isolates belonged to biotype P. multocida ssp. multocida. EcoRI, HpaII, and HindIII restriction enzyme digestions identified three, five, and five restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles, respectively. A majority of the isolates were susceptible to amikacin, ampicillin, ceftiofur, cephalothin, enrofloxacin, florfenicol, gentamicin, neomycin, novobiocin, oxacillin with 2% NaCl, sarafloxacin, tilmicosin, and trimethoprim with sulphadiazine and resistant to clindamicin, penicillin, tiamulin, and tylosin.

Free-living waterfowl residing in metropolitan parks in central Ohio were surveyed for the fecal shedding and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Pasteurella multocida. In addition, a survey for intestinal parasites was also conducted in these same waterfowl to determine parasite burdens in free-living waterfowl. Prevalences of 67%, 50%, and 0.2% of E. coli, C. jejuni, and Salmonella spp., respectively, were observed for all waterfowl species. Pasteurella multocida was not isolated from the sampled population. Salmonella java was isolated from one mallard duck. Statistically, there was a significantly higher E. coli isolation rate for mallard ducks than for Canada geese, but no difference was observed for C. jejuni isolation rates between waterfowl species. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted via the disk diffusion method and multidrug resistance was exhibited for penicillin G, lincomycin, vancomycin, erythromycin, and bacitracin. In addition, the prevalence of endoparasites in these sampled waterfowl ranged from 5% to 66%. Protozoan oocysts were most prevalent followed by nematode ova. No trematode or cestode ovum was recovered from this sampled population.

Avian cholera outbreaks have been identified in Indonesia in recent years. Despite vaccination programs, outbreaks continue to occur. To date, there has been a lack of information on the characteristics of Pasteurella multocida isolates involved in these outbreaks. Hence, the objective of this study was to characterize Indonesian P. multocida isolates in poultry. During 1998-99, 20 field outbreaks were reported in Indonesia. Nine isolates of P. multocida were recovered from these field outbreaks. The isolates were compared with four vaccine strains that were used in Indonesia and designated PM-V1, PM-V2, PM-V3, and PM-V4. The isolates were characterized by biotype, capsular type, somatic serotype, restriction endonuclease analysis, plasmid presence, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. Of the nine Indonesian isolates, three were of capsular type A (A:1,3,13; A:1,3; and A:8). One isolate was of type B:2,3 and one isolate was of capsular type F. For three isolates, the capsular serogroup could not be identified. Plasmids the size of 2.3 kbp were present in three of the field isolates and two of the vaccine strains. One plasmid less than 2 kbp was isolated from the vaccine strain PM-V4. Eight distinct DNA profiles were obtained from digestion with the restriction endonuclease EcoRI, and seven distinct DNA profiles were obtained from digestion with the restriction endonuclease HindIII. All of the isolates were resistant to lincomycin and sulfadiazine and were susceptible to ampicillin and trimethoprim. Of the nine isolates, seven (78%) were susceptible to doxycycline and gentamicin and six (67%) were susceptible to enrofloxacin.
