Abstract

Recent studies indicate that sexual harassment in schools is pervasive. Verbal harassment (degrading epithets, comments, and allusions) is most prevalent, but girls are also disturbed by physical manifestations. Harassing behavior affects school atmosphere and students' educational choices. Issues involving cultural diversity, free speech, false accusations, and legal compliance are discussed. (MLH)

Parent involvement can have unforeseen consequences. Article recounts complicated process of choosing a high school biology textbook in Colorado Springs district populated mainly by evangelical Christians. Although controversy arose over creationism's treatment in one text, book discussing evolution as unifying concept of biology was eventually chosen. Principal's commitment to openness and tolerance for all viewpoints made difference. (MLH)

Since passage of Colorado's first state finance law 17 years ago, power has shifted inexorably from the school board meeting room in Colorado Springs to state house in Denver. Abstract

Known as E.J., Edna J. Sprague leans toward a microphone at a Colorado Springs City Council meeting. Wife of author and historian Marshall Sprague, E.J. served on the city's park board, City Council, and city planning commission. Sprague was also a strong supporter of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center along with historic preservation efforts throughout the community. E.J. Sprague died in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2006.

Abstract

The first woman elected to Colorado Springs City Council, Betty Krouse served between 1963 -1975 and was named vice-mayor in 1973. She was an activist and leader in the community, serving as president of the local League of Women Voters and chairwoman of the Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments Board. Betty grew up as an orphan in Chicago and married Colorado Springs resident Robert Krouse in 1940. Betty combined her family responsibilities with a secretarial career at Colorado Springs Supply Co. and the 15th Air Force during World War II. In 1963 a group of neighbors asked her to run for City Council where she served for 12 years. Betty Krouse died in August of 1983.
