Los implantes dentales cortos, aunque históricamente se han asociado a un mal pronóstico en las rehabilitaciones orales implantosoportadas, con el paso de los años y los avances en implantología, se han convertido en un tratamiento habitual en la práctica diaria de muchos clínicos, obteniendo tasas de éxito que se han incrementado recientemente hasta prácticamente igualarse a los implantes convencionales para muchos autores. La necesidad de reducir tiempos de trabajo, costes económicos y morbilidad intraoperatoria unida a la creciente demanda derehabilitaciones implanto soportadas en pacientes de un rango de edad cada vez mayor hace necesario añadirlos entre nuestras opciones rehabilitadoras implantológicas. Para ello es necesario conocer sus pros y contras y establecer unos protocolos quirúrgicos y de selección del paciente receptor. Short dental implants, with the passage of time and advances in implantology, have become astandard treatment in clinical practice. The need to reduce intraoperative time, morbidity and economic costs, linked to the increasing demand for implant rehabilitation in patients with a range of growing old (elder patients) makes it necessary to add the min our rehabilitative implantology options. For this reason, it is important to know its advantages and disadvantages, to set up thesurgical protocols and to select the patients correctly.

Astrocyte development was investigated electron microscopically in the midbrain of the lizard Gallotia galloti from E32 to adult. At E32 only very immature (early) glioblasts were present in the midbrain and similar cells could be found until hatching. From E34 two other types of glioblast could be identified--dark glioblasts which had a slightly greater amount of cytoplasm than early glioblasts and light glioblasts, in which cytoplasmic organelles were more abundant. Both dark and light glioblasts were present in very small numbers in the adults. Astroblasts, which could be identified by the characteristic appearance of their rough endoplasmic reticulum, first appeared at E35, at which stage a few very immature astrocytes containing small quantities of gliofilaments were also present. With increasing age the quantity of gliofilaments in astrocyte cytoplasm increased. Astrocytes in the adult white matter contained very large amounts of gliofilaments whereas those in grey matter contained many fewer gliofilaments and had glycogen granules in their cytoplasm which were rarely present in mature fibrous astrocytes.

The ventral striatum nucleus (VS) begins development at Stage 31 (E. 31) from the neuroblasts which proceed from the cellular proliferation of both the ventral and terminal sulci. The ultrastructural features of the neuroblasts of VS between E. 31 and E. 34 have the aspect of immature cells, but as from E. 38 neuronal maturity is gradual until hatching. At E. 34 cellular death occurs. The first degenerated cells belong to Type I (nuclear degeneration) of the pycnotic cells; as from E. 40 cytoplasmic degeneration appears. Vascularisation starts at E. 35 and from E. 38 the first synaptic contacts are observed, especially those of the axodendritic type.
