The recently-discovered high-temperature superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high pressure has stimulated intensive debates. Key controversies concern interlayer versus intralayer pairing scenarios and if the hybridization plays a key role in establishing the superconductivity. But experimental clarification is difficult due to the limitation of employing state-of-the-art techniques under high pressure. Here we propose that quasiparticle tunneling and Andreev reflection on a normal metal-superconductor junction may provide a feasible way to distinguish different pairing scenarios. We predict that an asymmetric Fano line shape may be induced by the hybridization between the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ metallic bands and the strongly renormalized flat $d_{z^2}$ quasiparticle bands. In the superconducting state, we show that the Andreev reflection should be greatly suppressed for interlayer pairing superconductivity with a small interlayer hopping. We propose future experiments to examine these predictions and help clarify the fundamental physics of superconducting La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high pressure has stimulated intensive investigations concerning its paring mechanism and a correct description of its effective low-energy physics. Notable experimental observations include the right-triangle-shaped superconducting dome with the maximum $T_c$ of about 80 K and the strange metal behavior in the normal state above $T_c$. Here we apply the Schwinger boson approach to the bilayer $t$-$V$-$J$ model, which allows us to treat well both the magnetic correlations and the superconducting instability. We obtain a global phase diagram with both metallic and superconducting ground states separated by a quantum phase transition, and predict a minimal interlayer superexchange $J$ and a minimal $d_{z^2}$-hole concentration necessary for the superconductivity, with a highly asymmetric right-triangle-like shape for the $T_c$ curve as well as a maximum $T_c$ comparable with experiments. The normal state is featured with a pseudogap in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ spectra associated with preformed Cooper pairs and non-Fermi liquid strange metal behavior due to hybridization-induced spinon-holon-electron scattering. Our work clarifies the key difference of the two-component scenario of the superconductivity from other mechanisms, and provides a consistent understanding of the high-temperature superconductivity and strange metallic properties of La$_{3}$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high pressure., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We prove that multilayer superconductivity with interlayer pairing may naturally decompose into a series of weakly-coupled bilayer and trilayer superconducting blocks in order to minimize its total free energy. Our work is motivated by the recent proposal of interlayer pairing induced by the interlayer superexchange interaction of nearly half-filled $d_{z^2}$ orbitals in the bilayer and trilayer nickelate superconductors. We explore general properties of interlayer pairing superconductivity and perform systematic Ginzburg-Landau analyses of an effective multilayer model. For real materials, our results imply strong superconducting order parameter modulation and short coherence length along the $z$-axis (perpendicular to the layers). This reveals a unique feature of multilayer superconductivity with interlayer pairing and provides a basic framework for future experimental and theoretical investigations., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The discovery of a giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and its novel mechanism holds significant promise for advancing both fundamental research and practical applications. Magnetic kagome lattice materials are uniquely suited for studying the AHE due to their interplay between electronic structure, topology, and magnetism. However, the geometric frustration inherent in kagome lattices often limits the configuration and tunability of magnetic order. Here, we present a new design strategy for kagome-lattice materials with emergent magnetism, exemplified by the magnetic kagome metal TbTi$_3$Bi$_4$, which features interwoven magnetic Tb zigzag chains and non-magnetic Ti kagome bilayers. This material exhibits a record-high anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) of 10$^5$ $\Omega^{-1}$ cm$^{-1}$. Spectroscopy measurements reveal a large band folding gap observed via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, coexisting spin-density-wave (SDW) order detected through spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and a spiral magnetic order with large magnetic moments identified by neutron diffraction. These findings highlight a strong electron-magnetic coupling between itinerant charges and ordered magnetic moments, offering a spectroscopic explanation for the giant AHC in TbTi$_3$Bi$_4$. This work establishes a pathway for innovative material design strategies, unlocking new possibilities for future exploration and applications in quantum and spintronic technologies.

Identifying the key factors controlling the magnitude of $T_c$ is of critical importance in the pursuit of high-temperature superconductivity. In cuprates, $T_c$ reaches its maximal value in trilayer structure, leading to the belief that interlayer coupling may help promote the pairing. In contrast, for the recently discovered nickelate superconductors under high pressure, the maximum $T_c$ is reduced from about 80 K in the bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7}$ to 30 K in the trilayer La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. Motivated by this opposite trend, we propose an interlayer pairing scenario for the superconductivity of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. Our theory reveals intrinsic frustration in the spin-singlet pairing that the inner layer tends to form with both of the two outer layers respectively, leading to strong superconducting fluctuations between layers. This explains the reduction of its maximum $T_c$ compared to that of the bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7}$. Our findings support a fundamental distinction between multilayer nickelate and cuprate superconductors, and ascribe it to their different (interlayer versus intralayer) pairing mechanisms. Furthermore, our theory predicts extended $s^\pm$-wave gap structures in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, with varying signs and possible nodes on different Fermi pockets. We also find an intrinsic Josephson coupling with potentially interesting consequences that may be examined in future experiments. The interplay of topological band structures and electronic correlations may lead to novel exotic quantum phenomena with potential applications. First-principles calculations are critical for guiding the experimental discoveries and interpretations, but often fail if electronic correlations cannot be properly treated. Here we show that this issue occurs also in the antiferromagnetic kagome lattice Mn$_3X$ ($X=$ Sn, Ge), which exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect due to topological band structures with Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy. Our systematic investigations reveal a crucial role of the Hund's rule coupling on three key aspects of their magnetic, electronic, and topological properties: (1) the establishment of noncollinear antiferromagnetic orders, (2) the weakly renormalized bands in excellent agreement with ARPES, and (3) a sensitive tuning of the Weyl nodes beyond previous expectations. Our work provides a basis for understanding the topological properties of Mn$_3X$ and challenges previous experimental interpretations based on incorrect band structures.

Solving quantum impurity problems may advance our understanding of strongly correlated electron physics, but its development in multi-impurity systems has been greatly hindered due to the presence of shared bath. Here, we propose a general operation strategy to disentangle the shared bath into multiple auxiliary baths and relate the problem to a spectral decomposition problem of function matrix for applying the numerical renormalization group (NRG). We prove exactly that such decomposition is possible for models satisfying (block) circulant symmetry, and show how to construct the auxiliary baths for arbitrary impurity configuration by mapping its graph structure to the subgraph of a regular impurity configuration. We further propose an approximate decomposition algorithm to reduce the number of auxiliary baths and save the computational workload. Our work reveals a deep connection between quantum impurity problems and the graph theory, and provides a general scheme to extend the NRG applications for realistic multi-impurity systems.

Recent observations of contradictory impurity effect in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu2Si2 at ambient pressure have hindered the identification of its pairing symmetry. Here we perform theoretical analyses with both intraband and interband impurity scatterings for the nodeless $s^\pm$-wave pairing, and report an anomalous nonmonotonic variation of its $T_c$ suppression with the scattering strength. Our results reproduce the prominent reduction of $T_c$ in good agreement with earlier experiments by atomic substitution and explains as well its robustness against electron irradiation. We ascribe the latter to the screening of the interband impurity potential in the strong scattering or unitary region. This resolves the seeming contradiction in different experimental probes and provides an important support to the nodeless $s^\pm$-wave scenario in CeCu2Si2 at ambient pressure. Our theory may be extended to other narrow band systems such as twisted bilayer graphene and the recently discovered bilayer or trilayer nickelate superconductors, and provide a useful way to distinguish different paring candidates thereof., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures

Can room temperature superconductivity be achieved in correlated materials under ambient pressure? Our answer to this billion-dollar question is probably no, at least for realistic models within the current theoretical framework. This is shown by our systematic simulations on the pairing instability of some effective models for two-dimensional superconductivity. For a square lattice model with nearest-neighbour pairing, we find a plaquette state formed of weakly-connected $2\times2$ blocks for sufficiently large pairing interaction. The superconductivity is suppressed on both sides away from its melting quantum critical point. Thus, the plaquette state constrains the magnitude of $T_c$ for large pairing interactions and may be viewed as a strong-coupling parent state of $d$-wave superconductivity, in resemblance of other competing orders. We then extend our simulations to a variety of effective models covering nearest-neighbour or onsite pairings, single layer or two-layer structures, intralayer or interlayer pairings, and find an intrinsic maximum of the ratio $T_c/J\approx 0.04-0.07$, where $J$ is the onsite or nearest-neighbour pairing interaction. Comparison with existing experiments supports this constraint in cuprate, iron-based, nickelate, and heavy fermion superconductors, despite that these compounds are so complicated well beyond our simplified models. As a result, the known families of unconventional superconductivity, possibly except the infinite-layer nickelates, seem to almost exhaust their potentials in reaching the maximal $T_c$ allowed by their spin exchange interaction, while achieving room temperature superconductor would require a much larger $J$ beyond 400-700 meV, which seems unrealistic and hence demands novel pairing mechanisms., Comment: 5 figures

We propose an exactly solvable momentum-space Kondo-BCS model to study heavy fermion superconductivity. The Kondo interaction is local in momentum space, which can be derived from an Anderson lattice with a Hatsugai-Kohmoto interaction between $f$-electrons. By increasing the Kondo interaction, the model exhibits a crossover from a weak-coupling BCS superconductor to a strong-coupling heavy fermion superconductor featured with a large gap ratio and a large specific heat jump anomaly. Accordingly, the normal state evolves from a Fermi liquid above the BCS superconductor to a non-Fermi liquid two-fluid state above the heavy fermion superconductor. The two-fluid normal state also leads to two types of Cooper pairs, one between conduction electrons, the other between composite fermions formed by conduction electrons and $f$-spins, which is responsible for the strong coupling behaviors of heavy fermion superconductivity., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Motivated by the recent discovery of an intermediate quantum critical phase between the antiferromagnetic order and the Fermi liquid in the frustrated Kondo lattice CePdAl, we study here a Kondo-Heisenberg chain with frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ XXZ interactions among local spins using the density matrix renormalization group method. Our simulations reveal a global phase diagram with rich ground states including the antiferromagnetic order, the valence-bond-solid and bond-order-wave orders, the pair density wave state, the uniform superconducting state, and the Luttinger liquid state. We show that both the pair density wave and uniform superconductivity belong to the family of Luther-Emery liquids and may arise from pair instability of an intermediate quantum critical phase with medium Fermi volume in the presence of strong quantum fluctuations, while the Luttinger liquid has a large Fermi volume. This suggests a deep connection between the pair density wave, the unconventional superconductivity, and the non-Fermi liquid quantum critical phase., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

We clarify the pairing mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under high pressure by employing the static auxiliary field Monte Carlo approach to simulate a minimal effective model that contains local $d_{z^2}$ interlayer spin singlets and metallic $d_{x^2-y^2}$ bands. Superconductivity is induced when the local spin singlet pairs are mobilized and attain long-distance phase coherence by hybridization with the metallic bands. When projected onto realistic Fermi surfaces, it yields a nodeless $s$-wave gap on the $\gamma$ Fermi surface, and extended $s$-wave gaps of the same (opposite) sign on the $\alpha$ ($\beta$) Fermi surface due to its bonding (antibonding) character, with nodes or gap minima along the diagonal direction of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We find a dual role of the hybridization that not only induces global phase coherence but also competes with the spin singlet formation. This lead to a tentative phase diagram where $T_c$ varies nonmonotonically with the hybridization, in good correspondence with experimental observations. A roughly linear relation is obtained for realistic hopping and hybridization parameters: $T_c\approx 0.04-0.05 J$, where $J$ is the interlayer superexchange interaction. We emphasize the peculiar tunability of the bilayer structure and propose that $T_c$ may be further enhanced by hole doping or applying uniaxial pressure along the $c$ axis on superconducting La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Our work provides reliable numerical evidence for the pairing mechanism of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and points out a potential route to achieve even higher $T_c$., Comment: 7 pages,4 figures

The recent discovery of high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity in bilayer nickelate La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under high pressure has stimulated great interest concerning its pairing mechanism. We argue that the weak coupling model from the almost fully-filled $d_{z^{2}}$ bonding band cannot give rise to its high $T_{c}$, and thus propose a strong coupling model based on local inter-layer spin singlets of Ni-$d_{z^{2}}$ electrons due to their strong on-site Coulomb repulsion. This leads to a minimal effective model that contains local pairing of $d_{z^{2}}$ electrons and a considerable hybridization with near quarter-filled itinerant $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ electrons on nearest-neighbor sites. Their strong coupling provides a unique two-component scenario to achieve high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity. Our theory highlights the importance of the bilayer structure of superconducting La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and points out a potential route for the exploration of more high-$T_{c}$ superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report strongly correlated electronic band structure calculations of the recently discovered double-layer high-temperature superconductor La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure. Our calculations reveal dual nature of Ni-$d$ electrons with almost localized $d_{z^2}$ orbitals due to onsite Coulomb repulsion and very flat hybridization bands of Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and Ni-$d_{z^2}$ quasiparticles near the Fermi energy. We find that the quasiparticle effective mass are greatly enhanced by the Hund's rule coupling and their lifetimes are inversely proportional to the temperature, which explains the experimentally observed strange metal behavior in the normal state. We also find strong antiferromagnetic spin correlations of Ni-$d$ electrons, which may provide the pairing force of quasiparticles for the high-temperature superconductivity. These give a potential explanation of two key observations in experiment and connect the superconducting La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ with cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The presence of flat bands and the interplay of orbital-selective Mott, Hund, and Kondo physics make La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ a unique platform for exploring rich emergent quantum many-body phenomena in the future., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We discover a universal scaling law for the quasiparticle Nernst coefficient in underdoped cuprates, whose magnitude decreases exponentially with increasing temperature as confirmed in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$. We attribute it to the basic mathematical structure of the conductivity formula with a narrow effective bandwidth of nonzero Berry curvatures associated with the pseudogap. A unified scheme is then developed to analyze transverse transport in hole-doped cuprates and clarify the puzzling disparity in determining the pseudogap temperature from different measurements. Our proposal opens the avenue for exploring potential scaling laws in the intermediate temperature region and may have broad applications in strongly correlated or narrow band systems., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We propose an auxiliary-bath algorithm for the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method to solve multi-impurity models with shared electron baths. The method allows us to disentangle the electron baths into independent Wilson chains to perform standard NRG procedures beyond the widely adopted independent bath approximation. Its application to the 2-impurity model immediately reproduces the well-known even- and odd-parity channels. For 3-impurity Kondo models, we find successive screening of collective degrees of freedom such as the helicity and the cluster spin, and clarify the false prediction of a non-Fermi liquid ground state in unphysical parameter region in previous literature due to improper treatment of disentanglement. Our work highlights the importance of nonlocal spatial correlations due to shared baths and reveals a generic picture of successive collective screening for the entropy depletion that is crucial in real correlated systems. Our method greatly expands the applicability of the NRG and opens an avenue for its further development.

One parameter scaling of the Hall coefficient of cuprates has been well known for almost three decades, but still lacks a simple mathematical expression. Motivated by the recent phenomenological prediction of the universal scaling of the thermal Hall conductivity, we propose here a simple scaling function for the Hall coefficient in cuprates that varies exponentially with the temperature. Comparison with experimental data in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+\delta}$, and Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+\delta }$ confirms its validity over a wide temperature and doping range. The scaling is independent of microscopic details and arises as long as the hole carriers have nonzero Berry curvature density within a finite energy window, possibly due to their interaction with the spin liquid. This differs from the activation model proposed previously to explain the Hall coefficient at low doping and high temperatures, and suggests a unified picture in line with the one parameter scaling observed in many physical quantities of cuprates., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The competition between magnetic order and Kondo effect is essential for the rich physics of heavy fermion systems. Nevertheless, how such competition is manifested in the quasiparticle bands in a real periodic lattice remains elusive in spectroscopic experiments. Here we report a high-resolution photoemission study of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice system CeCoGe3 with a high TN1 of 21K. Our measurements reveal a weakly dispersive 4f band at the Fermi level near the Z point, arisingfrom moderate Kondo effect. The intensity of this heavy 4f band exhibits a logarithmic increase with lowering temperature and begins to deviate from this Kondo-like behavior below 25 K, just above TN1, and eventually ceases to grow below 12 K. Our work provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the competition between magnetic order and the Kondo effect in a Kondo lattice system with local-moment antiferromagnetism, indicating a distinct scenario for the microscopic coexistence and competition of these phenomena, which might be related to the real-space modulation., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We apply the recently developed slave fermion approach to study the doped Mott insulator in the one-band Hubbard and Hubbard-Heisenberg models. Our results produce several subtle features in the electron spectra and confirm the key role of antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations in the appearance of the pseudogap. Upon hole doping, the electron spectra exhibit a single peak near the Fermi energy in the local approximation of the Hubbard model where AFM correlations are not included. When AFM correlations are included through an explicit mean-field Heisenberg interaction, a second peak emerges at slightly lower energy and pushes the other peak to higher energy, so that a pseudogap emerges between the two peaks at small doping. Both peaks grow rapidly with increasing doping and eventually merge together, where the pseudogap no longer exists. Detailed analyses of the spectral evolution with doping and the strength of the Heisenberg interaction confirm that the lower-energy peak comes from a polaronic mechanism due to the holon-spinon interaction in the AFM-correlated background and the higher-energy peak arises from the holon hybridization to form the electron quasiparticles. Thus, the pseudogap arises from the interplay of the polaronic and hybridization mechanisms. Our results are in good agreement with previous numerical calculations using the dynamical mean-field theory and its cluster extensions, but give a clearer picture of the underlying physics. Our work provides a promising perspective for clarifying the nature of doped Mott insulators and may serve as a starting point for more elaborate investigations in the future.

Understanding the nature of local-itinerant transition of strongly correlated electrons is one of the central problems in condensed matter physics. Heavy fermion systems describe the f-electron delocalization through Kondo interactions with conduction electrons. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to the so-called Kondo-destruction scenario, which predicts a dramatic local-to-itinerant quantum phase transition of f-electrons at zero temperature. On the other hand, two-fluid behaviors have been observed in many materials, suggesting coexistence of local and itinerant f-electrons over a broad temperature range but lacking a microscopic theoretical description. To elucidate this fundamental issue, here we propose an exactly solvable Kondo-Heisenberg model in which the spins are defined in the momentum space and the k-space Kondo interaction corresponds to a highly nonlocal spin scattering in the coordinate space. Its solution reveals a continuous evolution of the Fermi surfaces with Kondo interaction and two-fluid behaviors similar to those observed in real materials. The electron density violates the usual Luttinger's theorem, but follows a generalized one allowing for partially enlarged Fermi surfaces due to partial Kondo screening in the momentum space. Our results highlight the consequence of nonlocal Kondo interaction relevant for strong quantum fluctuation regions, and provide important insight into the microscopic description of two-fluid phenomenology in heavy fermion systems.

We apply the static auxiliary field Monte Carlo approach to study phase correlations of the pairing fields in a microscopic model with spin-singlet pairing interaction. We find that the short- and long-range phase correlations are well captured by the phase mutual information, which allows us to construct a theoretical phase diagram containing the uniform $d$-wave superconducting region, the phase fluctuating region, the local pairing region, and the disordered region. We show that the gradual development of phase coherence has a number of consequences on spectroscopic measurements, such as the development of the Fermi arc and the anisotropy in the angle-resolved spectra, scattering rate, entropy, specific heat, and quasiparticle dispersion, in good agreement with experimental observations. For strong coupling, our Monte Carlo simulation reveals an unexpected charge-4$e$ plaquette state with $d$-wave bonds, which competes with the uniform $d$-wave superconductivity and exhibits a U-shaped density of states.

The infinite-layer nickelates, isostructural to the high-Tc superconductor cuprates, have risen as a promising platform to host unconventional superconductivity and stimulated growing interests in the condensed matter community. Despite numerous researches, the superconducting pairing symmetry of the nickelate superconductors, the fundamental characteristic of a superconducting state, is still under debate. Moreover, the strong electronic correlation in the nickelates may give rise to a rich phase diagram, where the underlying interplay between the superconductivity and other emerging quantum states with broken symmetry is awaiting exploration. Here, we study the angular dependence of the transport properties on the infinite-layer nickelate Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 superconducting films with Corbino-disk configuration. The azimuthal angular dependence of the magnetoresistance (R({\phi})) manifests the rotational symmetry breaking from isotropy to four-fold (C4) anisotropy with increasing magnetic field, revealing a symmetry breaking phase transition. Approaching the low temperature and large magnetic field regime, an additional two-fold (C2) symmetric component in the R({\phi}) curves and an anomalous upturn of the temperature-dependent critical field are observed simultaneously, suggesting the emergence of an exotic electronic phase. Our work uncovers the evolution of the quantum states with different rotational symmetries and provides deep insight into the global phase diagram of the nickelate superconductors.

We investigate the interplay of the topological and Kondo effects in a one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model with nontrivial conduction band using the density matrix renormalization group method. By analyzing the density profile, the local hybridization, and the spin/charge gap, we find that the Kondo effect can be destructed at the edges of the chain by the topological end state below a finite critical Kondo coupling $J_{K}^{c}$. Spectroscopic data may often contain unwanted extrinsic signals. For example, in ARPES experiment, a wire mesh is typically placed in front of the CCD to block stray photo-electrons, but could cause a grid-like structure in the spectra during quick measurement mode. In the past, this structure was often removed using the mathematical Fourier filtering method by erasing the periodic structure. However, this method may lead to information loss and vacancies in the spectra because the grid structure is not strictly linearly superimposed. Here, we propose a deep learning method to effectively overcome this problem. Our method takes advantage of the self-correlation information within the spectra themselves and can greatly optimize the quality of the spectra while removing the grid structure and noise simultaneously. It has the potential to be extended to all spectroscopic measurements to eliminate other extrinsic signals and enhance the spectral quality based on the self-correlation of the spectra solely.

De-noising plays a crucial role in the post-processing of spectra. Machine learning-based methods show good performance in extracting intrinsic information from noisy data, but often require a high-quality training set that is typically inaccessible in real experimental measurements. Here, using spectra in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) as an example, we develop a de-noising method for extracting intrinsic spectral information without the need for a training set. This is possible as our method leverages the self-correlation information of the spectra themselves. It preserves the intrinsic energy band features and thus facilitates further analysis and processing. Moreover, since our method is not limited by specific properties of the training set compared to previous ones, it may well be extended to other fields and application scenarios where obtaining high-quality multidimensional training data is challenging.

Recent progresses using state-of-the-art experimental techniques have motivated a number of new insights on heavy fermion physics. This article gives a brief summary of the author's research along this direction. Mott transition plays a key role in strongly correlated physics but its nature is not yet fully understood. Motivated by recent development of Schwinger boson approach for the Kondo lattice, we propose in this work a novel slave fermion algorithm to study the Mott transition. Upon local approximation, our method yields a phase diagram with a zero-temperature continuous (Mott) metal-insulator transition at finite Coulomb interaction $U$ for the half-filled one-band Hubbard model on a square lattice, and the resistivity exhibits a critical scaling around the quantum Widom line. We argue that the Mott transition may be associated with a dynamic charge Kondo effect of local degenerate doublon and holon states, causing sharp resonances on the doublon/holon and electron spectra. The transition is pushed to $U=0$ once intersite antiferromagnetic correlations are included, in agreement with exact numerical calculations. Our approach captures some essential features of the Mott transition and offers an alternative angle to view this important problem. The interaction between localized f and itinerant conduction electrons is crucial in the electronic properties of heavy fermion and valence fluctuating compounds. Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of the archetypical valence fluctuating compound EuNi2P2 that hosts multiple f electrons. At low temperatures, we reveal the hybridization between Eu 4f and Ni 3d states, which contributes to the electron mass enhancement, consistent with the periodic Anderson model. With increasing temperature, interestingly, we observe opposite temperature evolution of electron spectral function above and below the Kondo coherence temperature near 110 K, which is in contrast to the monotonic valence change and beyond the expectation of the periodic Anderson model. We argue that both f-d hybridization and correlation are imperative in the electronic properties of EuNi2P2. Our results shed light on the understanding of novel properties, such as heavy fermion behaviors and valence fluctuation, of rare-earth transition-metal intermetallic compounds with multiple f electrons.

Despite of many efforts, we still lack a clear picture on how heavy electrons emerge and develop on the Kondo lattice. Here we introduce a key concept named the hybridization bond phase and propose a scenario based on phase correlation to address this issue. The bond phase is a gauge-invariant quantity combining two onsite hybridization fields mediated by inter-site magnetic correlations. Its probabilistic distribution decays exponentially with site distance, from which a characteristic length scale can be extracted to describe the spatial correlation of Kondo hybridizations. Our calculations show that this correlation length grows logarithmically with lowering temperature at large Kondo coupling, and reveal a precursor pseudogap state with short-range phase correlation before long-range phase coherence is developed to form the Kondo insulating (or heavy electron) state at low temperatures. This provides a potential microscopic explanation of the two-stage hybridization proposed by recent pump-probe experiment and the logarithmic scaling in the phenomenological two-fluid model. Metallic spin liquid has been reported in several correlated metals, but a satisfactory theoretical description is not yet available. Here we propose a potential route to realize the metallic spin liquid and construct an effective $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory with charged fractionalized excitations on the triangular Kondo lattice. This leads to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ metallic spin liquid featured with long-lived, heavy holon excitations of spin 0 and charge $+e$ and a partially enlarged electron Fermi surface. It differs from the weak-coupling FL$^*$ state proposed earlier and may be viewed as a fractionalized heavy fermion liquid. A charge order (CO) with a wavevector $\mathbf{q}\simeq\left(\frac{1}{3},0,0\right)$ is observed in infinite-layer nickelates. Here we use first-principles calculations to demonstrate a charge-transfer-driven CO mechanism in infinite-layer nickelates, which leads to a characteristic Ni$^{1+}$-Ni$^{2+}$-Ni$^{1+}$ stripe state. For every three Ni atoms, due to the presence of near-Fermi-level conduction bands, Hubbard interaction on Ni-$d$ orbitals transfers electrons on one Ni atom to conduction bands and leaves electrons on the other two Ni atoms to become more localized. We further derive a low-energy effective model to elucidate that the CO state arises from a delicate competition between Hubbard interaction on Ni-$d$ orbitals and charge transfer energy between Ni-$d$ orbitals and conduction bands. With physically reasonable parameters, $\mathbf{q}=\left(\frac{1}{3},0,0\right)$ CO state is more stable than uniform paramagnetic state and usual checkerboard antiferromagnetic state. We studied the uniaxial-pressure dependence of the resistivity for URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ samples with $x$ = 0 and 0.2, which host a hidden order (HO) and a large-moment antiferromagnetic (LMAFM) phase, respectively. For both samples, the elastoresistivity $\zeta$ shows a seemingly divergent behavior above the transition temperature $T_0$ and a quick decrease below it. We found that the temperature dependence of $\zeta$ for both samples can be well described by assuming the uniaxial pressure effect on the gap or certain energy scale except for $\zeta_{(110)}$ of the $x$ = 0 sample, which exhibits a non-zero residual value at 0 K. We show that this provides a qualitative difference between the HO and LMAFM phases. Our results suggest that there is an in-plane anisotropic response to the uniaxial pressure that only exists in the hidden order state without necessarily breaking the rotational lattice symmetry., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Motivated by the recent discovery of ferromagnetic quantum criticality in the heavy fermion compound CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, we develop a numerical algorithm of infinite projected entangled pair states for the anisotropic ferromagnetic Kondo-Heisenberg model in two dimensions and study the ferromagnetic quantum phase transitions with varying magnetic and hopping anisotropy. Our calculations reveal a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in the large anisotropic region and first-order quantum phase transitions for smaller anisotropy. Our results highlight the importance of magnetic anisotropy on ferromagnetic quantum criticality in Kondo lattice systems and provide a possible explanation for the experimental observation in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ with a quasi-one-dimensional magnetic structure. Motivated by the recent discovery of a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ and its distinction from other U-based heavy fermion metals such as UGe$_2$, we develop a unified explanation of their different ground state properties based on an anisotropic ferromagnetic Kondo-Heisenberg model. We employ an improved large-$N$ Schwinger boson approach and predict a full phase diagram containing both a continuous ferromagnetic quantum phase transition for large magnetic anisotropy and first-order transitions for relatively small anisotropy. Our calculations reveal three different ferromagnetic phases including a half-metallic spin selective Kondo insulator with a constant magnetization. The Fermi surface topologies are found to change abruptly between different phases, consistent with that observed in UGe$_2$. At finite temperatures, we predict the development of Kondo hybridization well above the ferromagnetic long-range order and its relocalization near the phase transition, in good agreement with band measurements in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Recent observations of two nodeless gaps in superconducting CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ have raised intensive debates as to its exact gap structure of either sign-reversal ($s^{+-}$) or sign-preserving ($s^{++}$) pairing. Here we investigate the quasiparticle interference (QPI) using realistic Fermi surface topology for both weak and strong interband impurity scatterings. Our calculations of the QPI and integrated antisymmetrized local density of states reveal qualitative distinctions between $s^{+-}$ and $s^{++}$ pairing states, which include the intragap impurity resonance and a significant energy-dependence difference between two gap energies. Our predictions provide a guide for phase-sensitive QPI measurements to uncover decisively the true pairing symmetry in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Despite of many experimental and theoretical efforts, the pairing symmetry of superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ remains undecided. The accidentally degenerate $d_{x^2-y^2}+ig$ is consistent with most current experiments and seems to be one of the most probable candidates, but we still lack a satisfactory theoretical mechanism for its appearance. Here we construct a phenomenological model combining realistic electronic band structures and all symmetry-allowed multipole fluctuations as potential pairing glues, and make a systematic survey of major pairing states within the Eliashberg framework. Our calculations show that $d_{x^2-y^2}+ig$ can arise naturally from the interplay of antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic, and electric multipole fluctuations whose coexistence is manifested in previous experiments and calculations. We give a brief review of the Mott-Kondo scenario and its consequence in the recently-discovered infinite-layer nickelate superconductors. We argue that the parent state is a self-doped Mott insulator and propose an effective $t$-$J$-$K$ model to account for its low-energy properties. At small doping, the model describes a low carrier density Kondo system with incoherent Kondo scattering at finite temperatures, in good agreement with experimental observation of the logarithmic temperature dependence of electric resistivity. Upon increasing Sr doping, the model predicts a breakdown of the Kondo effect, which provides a potential explanation of the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the electric resistivity with a power law scaling over a wide range of the temperature. Unconventional superconductivity is shown to undergo a transition from nodeless $(d+is)$-wave to nodal $d$-wave near the critical doping due to competition of the Kondo and Heisenberg superexchange interactions. Finding disentangled representation plays a predominant role in the success of modern deep learning applications, but the results lack a straightforward explanation. Here we apply the information bottleneck method and its $\beta$-VAE implementation to find the disentangled low-dimensional representation of classical models. For the Ising model, our results reveal a deep connection between the disentangled features and the physical order parameters, and the widely-used Bernoulli decoder is found to be learning a mean-field Hamiltonian at fixed temperature. This analogy motivates us to extend the application of $\beta$-VAE to more complex classical models with non-binary variables using different decoder neural network and propose a modified architecture $\beta^2$-VAE to enforce thermal fluctuations in generated samples. We study the magnetism in NdFe$_2$Ga$_8$ by the neutron-diffraction and temperature-modulated linear {Gr\"uneisen} parameter measurements. Previous thermodynamical measurements have demonstrated that there are two magnetic transitions at 10 and 14.5 K, respectively. Neutron-diffraction measurements confirm that the lower one is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition with a commensurate magnetic structure. Both the commensurate and the incommensurate (IC) magnetic peaks are found below the higher transition but their intensities only gradually increase with decreasing temperature. Below 10 K, the commensurate peak intensity increases quickly with decreasing temperature, signaling the AFM transition, while the IC peak intensity disappears below 5 K. The linear {Gr\"uneisen} parameter along the $c$ axis, $\Gamma_c$, shows a hysteresis behavior that is different from the hysteresis behavior for the magnetization $M$. Magnetic frustrations can enhance quantum zero-point motion in spin systems and lead to exotic topological insulating states. When coupled to mobile electrons, they may lead to unusual non-Fermi liquid or metallic spin liquid states whose nature has not been well explored. Here, we propose a spin current Kondo mechanism underlying a series of non-Fermi liquid phases on the border of Kondo and magnetic phases in a frustrated three-impurity Kondo model. This mechanism is confirmed by renormalization group analysis and describes movable Kondo singlets called "holons" induced by an effective coupling between the spin current of conduction electrons and the vector chirality of localized spins. Similar mechanism may widely exist in all frustrated Kondo systems and be detected through spin-current noise measurements., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We apply the dynamical large-$N$ Schwinger boson technique as an impurity solver for the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations of the Kondo lattice model. Our approach captures the hybridization physics through the DMFT self-consistency that is missing in the pure Schwinger boson calculations with independent electron baths. The resulting thermodynamic and transport properties are in qualitative agreement with more rigorous calculations and give the correct crossover behavior over a wide temperature range from the local moment regime to the Fermi liquid. The quantum spin liquid candidate NaYbSe$_2$ was recently reported to exhibit a Mott transition under pressure. Superconductivity was observed in the high-pressure metallic phase, raising the question concerning its relation with the low-pressure quantum spin liquid ground state. Here we combine the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory to explore the underlying mechanism of the insulator-to-metal transition and superconductivity and establish an overall picture of its electronic phases under pressure. Our results suggest that NaYbSe$_2$ is a charge-transfer insulator at ambient pressure. Upon increasing pressure, however, the system first enters a semi-metallic state with incoherent Kondo scattering against coexisting localized Yb-$4f$ moments, and then turns into a heavy fermion metal. In between, there may exist a delocalization quantum critical point responsible for the observed non-Fermi liquid region with linear-in-$T$ resistivity. The insulator-to-metal transition is therefore a two-stage process. Superconductivity emerges in the heavy fermion phase with well-nested Yb-4$f$ Fermi surfaces, suggesting that spin fluctuations may play a role in the Cooper pairing. NaYbSe$_2$ might therefore be the 3rd Yb-based heavy-fermion superconductor with a very "high" $T_c$ than most heavy fermion superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Traditional maximum entropy and sparsity-based algorithms for analytic continuation often suffer from the ill-posed kernel matrix or demand tremendous computation time for parameter tuning. Here we propose a neural network method by convex optimization and replace the ill-posed inverse problem by a sequence of well-conditioned surrogate problems. After training, the learned optimizers are able to give a solution of high quality with low time cost and achieve higher parameter efficiency than heuristic fully-connected networks. The output can also be used as a neural default model to improve the maximum entropy for better performance. We propose a static auxiliary field approximation to study the hybridization physics of Kondo systems without the sign problem and use the mutual information to measure the intersite hybridization correlations. Our method takes full account of the spatial fluctuations of the hybridization fields at all orders and overcomes the artificial (first-order) phase transition predicted in the mean-field approximation. When applied to the two-impurity Kondo model, it reveals a logarithmically divergent amplitude mutual information near the so-called "Varma-Jones" fixed point and a large phase mutual information manifesting the development of intersite phase coherence in the Kondo regime, with observable influences on physical properties. These highlight the importance of hybridization fluctuations and confirm the mutual information as a useful tool to explore the hybridization physics in Kondo systems., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic fluctuations is the leading candidate for pairing in cuprate, iron-based and heavy fermion superconductors. This view is challenged by the recent discovery of nodeless superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, and calls for a detailed understanding of the corresponding magnetic fluctuations. Here, we mapped out the magnetic excitations in \ys{superconducting (S-type)} CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ using inelastic neutron scattering, finding a strongly asymmetric dispersion for $E\lesssim1.5$~meV, which at higher energies evolve into broad columnar magnetic excitations that extend to $E\gtrsim 5$ meV. While low-energy magnetic excitations exhibit marked three-dimensional characteristics, the high-energy magnetic excitations in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ are almost two-dimensional, reminiscent of paramagnons found in cuprate and iron-based superconductors. By comparing our experimental findings with calculations in the random-phase approximation,we find that the magnetic excitations in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ arise from quasiparticles associated with its heavy electron band, which are also responsible for superconductivity. Our results provide a basis for understanding magnetism and superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, and demonstrate the utility of neutron scattering in probing band renormalization in heavy fermion metals.

The tilted balance among competing interactions can yield a rich variety of ground states of quantum matter. In most Ce-based heavy fermion systems, this can often be qualitatively described by the famous Doniach phase diagram, owing to the competition between the Kondo screening and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida exchange interaction. Here, we report an unusual pressure-temperature phase diagram beyond the Doniach one in CeCuP2. At ambient pressure, CeCuP2 displays typical heavy-fermion behavior, albeit with a very low carrier density. With lowering temperature, it shows a crossover from a non Fermi liquid to a Fermi liquid at around 2.4 K. But surprisingly, the Kondo coherence temperature decreases with increasing pressure, opposite to that in most Ce-based heavy fermion compounds. Upon further compression, two superconducting phases are revealed. At 48.0 GPa, the transition temperature reaches 6.1 K, the highest among all Ce-based heavy fermion superconductors. We argue for possible roles of valence tuning and fluctuations associated with its special crystal structure in addition to the hybridization effect. These unusual phase diagrams suggest that CeCuP2 is a novel platform for studying the rich heavy fermions physics beyond the conventional Doniach paradigm.
