Abstract

The recent discovery of room temperature superconductivity (283 K) in carbonaceous sulfur hydride (C-S-H) has attracted lots of interests in ternary hydrogen rich materials. In this report, ternary hydride P-S-H has been synthesized through photochemical reaction from elemental sulfur (S), phosphorus (P) and molecular hydrogen (H2) at high pressures and room temperature. The Raman spectroscopy under pressure shows that H2S and PH3 compounds are synthesized after laser heating at 0.9 GPa and a ternary van der Waals compound P-S-H is synthesized with a further compression to 4.6 GPa. The P-S-H compound is probably a mixed alloy of PH3 and (H2S)2H2 with a guest-host structure similar to the C-S-H system. The ternary hydride can persist up to 35.6 GPa at least and shows two phase transitions at approximately 23.6 GPa and 32.8 GPa, respectively. The P-S-H ternary hydride in this report is a competitive candidate for new hydride superconductors with near room-temperature transitions.

Abstract

Background The regional disparity of heatwave-related mortality over a long period has not been sufficiently assessed across the globe, impeding the localisation of adaptation planning and risk management towards climate change. We quantified the global mortality burden associated with heatwaves at a spatial resolution of 0.5°x0.5° and the temporal change from 1990 to 2019. Methods and findings We collected data on daily deaths and temperature from 750 locations of 43 countries or regions, and 5 meta-predictors in 0.5°x0.5° resolution across the world. Heatwaves were defined as location-specific daily mean temperature [greater than or equal to]95th percentiles of year-round temperature range with duration [greater than or equal to]2 days. We first estimated the location-specific heatwave-mortality association. Secondly, a multivariate meta-regression was fitted between location-specific associations and 5 meta-predictors, which was in the third stage used with grid cell-specific meta-predictors to predict grid cell-specific association. Heatwave-related excess deaths were calculated for each grid and aggregated. During 1990 to 2019, 0.94% (95% CI: 0.68-1.19) of deaths [i.e., 153,078 cases (95% eCI: 109,950-194,227)] per warm season were estimated to be from heatwaves, accounting for 236 (95% eCI: 170-300) deaths per 10 million residents. The ratio between heatwave-related excess deaths and all premature deaths per warm season remained relatively unchanged over the 30 years, while the number of heatwave-related excess deaths per 10 million residents per warm season declined by 7.2% per decade in comparison to the 30-year average. Locations with the highest heatwave-related death ratio and rate were in Southern and Eastern Europe or areas had polar and alpine climates, and/or their residents had high incomes. The temporal change of heatwave-related mortality burden showed geographic disparities, such that locations with tropical climate or low incomes were observed with the greatest decline. The main limitation of this study was the lack of data from certain regions, e.g., Arabian Peninsula and South Asia. Conclusions Heatwaves were associated with substantial mortality burden that varied spatiotemporally over the globe in the past 30 years. Abstract

In this paper, we document a novel machine learning based bottom-up approach for static and dynamic portfolio optimization on, potentially, a large number of assets. The methodology applies to general constrained optimization problems and overcomes many major difficulties arising in current optimization schemes. Taking mean-variance optimization as an example, we no longer need to compute the covariance matrix and its inverse, therefore the method is immune from the estimation error on this quantity. Moreover, no explicit calls of optimization routines are needed. Applications to equity portfolio management in U.S. and China equity markets are studied and we document significant excess returns to the selected benchmarks., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures and 3 tables

The three oldest churches in Macao are all listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The existing buildings of St. Lawrence’s Church and St. Anthony’s Church are both the neoclassical style. There is few parametric analysis of these two churches. This study takes the planes of St. Lawrence’s Church and St. Anthony’s Church as the research objects, and parameterizes the geometric composition characteristics of the designs.

Abstract

Background Long-term exposure to fine particles [less than or equal to]2.5 [mu]m in diameter (PM.sub.2.5) has been linked to cancer mortality. However, the effect of wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 exposure on cancer mortality risk is unknown. This study evaluates the association between wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 and site-specific cancer mortality in Brazil, from 2010 to 2016. Methods and findings Nationwide cancer death records were collected during 2010-2016 from the Brazilian Mortality Information System. Death records were linked with municipal-level wildfire- and non-wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 concentrations, at a resolution of 2.0° latitude by 2.5° longitude. We applied a variant difference-in-differences approach with quasi-Poisson regression, adjusting for seasonal temperature and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the exposure for specific cancer sites were estimated. Attributable fractions and cancer deaths were also calculated. In total, 1,332,526 adult cancer deaths (age [greater than or equal to] 20 years), from 5,565 Brazilian municipalities, covering 136 million adults were included. The mean annual wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 concentration was 2.38 [mu]g/m.sup.3, and the annual non-wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 concentration was 8.20 [mu]g/m.sup.3 . The RR for mortality from all cancers was 1.02 (95% CI 1.01-1.03, p < 0.001) per 1-[mu]g/m.sup.3 increase of wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 concentration, which was higher than the RR per 1-[mu]g/m.sup.3 increase of non-wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 (1.01 [95% CI 1.00-1.01], p = 0.007, with p for difference = 0.003). Wildfire-related PM.sub.2.5 was associated with mortality from cancers of the nasopharynx (1.10 [95% CI 1.04-1.16], p = 0.002), esophagus (1.05 [95% CI 1.01-1.08], p = 0.012), stomach (1.03 [95% CI 1.01-1.06], p = 0.017), colon/rectum (1.08 [95% CI 1.05-1.11], p < 0.001), larynx (1.06 [95% CI 1.02-1.11], p = 0.003), skin (1.06 [95% CI 1.00-1.12], p = 0.003), breast (1.04 [95% CI 1.01-1.06], p = 0.007), prostate (1.03 [95% CI 1.01-1.06], p = 0.019), and testis (1.10 [95% CI 1.03-1.17], p = 0.002). For all cancers combined, the attributable deaths were 37 per 100,000 population and ranged from 18/100,000 in the Northeast Region of Brazil to 71/100,000 in the Central-West Region. Study limitations included a potential lack of assessment of the joint effects of gaseous pollutants, an inability to capture the migration of residents, and an inability to adjust for some potential confounders. Abstract

Background: The association between exposure to PM2.5 chemical constituents and obesity remains to be elucidated, as most studies have used a single measure of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the associations of exposure to PM2.5 chemical constituents with general, abdominal, and visceral obesity, and the mediation effect of physical activity (PA) in the associations. Methods: Based on a total of 49,819 adults from the baseline of the Yunnan Behavior and Disease Surveillance cohort (YBDS) in southern China in 2021, we used multiple linear regression, weighted quantile sum regression, and quantile regression to estimate independent and joint effects of PM2.5 chemical constituents on elevated BMI, waist circumference (WC) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) and whether these effects changed in quantiles. Mediation analysis was used to examine whether physical activity acts as a mediator in these pathways. Results: Per IQR μg/m3 increase in all PM2.5 chemical constituents was significantly associated with the elevated BMI (β [95% CI]: 0.170 [0.127, 0.214]), WC (0.316 [0.217, 0.415]) and VAI (0.102 [0.075, 0.129]), with the largest weights from OM (53.89, 81.67, and 89.82%, respectively). The effects of PM2.5 chemical constituents on obesity showed an overall upward trend from quantiles 1–4 of BMI, WC, and VAI, especially with a rapid upward trend from the sixth decile of VAI. Reduced PA mediated 3.16, 7.08, and 3.78% of the associations between PM2.5 chemical constituents and elevated BMI, WC, and VAI, respectively. Conclusions: Exposure to PM2.5 chemical constituents, especially OM, was significantly associated with increased risks for obesity in adults.
