2. Analysis of the Educational Needs Related to, and Perceptions of the Importance of, Essential Job Competencies among Science and Engineering Graduates

Abstract

The goal of this study was to identify perceptions of the importance and needs of the essential job competencies required by Korean science and engineering graduates in the context of actual workplaces. We analyzed data from the 11th Youth Panel using the paired t-test, the Borich needs assessment, and the locus for focus model. An important finding was that the science and engineering graduates recognized the competencies pertaining to working with others and professional competencies as important among 15 essential competencies. We also found that they prioritized competencies differently depending on specific departments: the science graduates prioritized professional competencies, but the engineering graduates placed relatively greater importance on the competencies relating to interacting with others. Through this study, we identified the educational needs for essential job competencies from the science and engineering graduates and suggested implications for corresponding educational approaches.

3. Teaching and Learning Vocabulary as L2: Approaches in Spanish Textbooks

Abstract

This study examines the common pedagogical approaches of L2 Spanish textbooks that are currently used at the college-level in the United States, and investigates whether they embrace the notion of input as a key concept in aiding L2 learners in learning new vocabulary words through activities that guide them from input/comprehension to output/production in a meaningful way. The analysis revealed that the textbooks surveyed in this study overall exhibited the common organization and presentation of the new vocabulary words. Despite these apparent similarities of organization in presenting new vocabulary, the surveyed textbooks differed in the manner in which the input-based instruction and the output-based instruction were employed. More specifically, the activities found in the surveyed textbooks exhibited varying degrees of manipulation involved in both input and output-based tasks, and they also differed in the number of input-based and output-based activities as well as in the logical progression between the two types of activities. The findings of this study suggest that the surveyed textbooks showed a predominant tendency towards the output-based instruction of vocabulary, putting an emphasis on the production of new L2 vocabulary. This study provides further evidence that the input-based instruction, despite its effectiveness of teaching and learning L2 as demonstrated in many previous studies, is not systematically incorporated into most L2 textbooks, thus implying a gap between theory and practice.

Abstract

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are a viable energy-harvesting technology that can harness kinetic energy from various environmental sources. TENGs primarily utilize linear and rotational motion as their kinetic energy sources. In the contact/separation mode, the primary mode of operation for linear motion, one cycle of AC output is generated with a single push. If the output can be sustained for an extended period from a single push, the potential applications for TENGs would significantly expand. In this study, we propose an innovative Linear-to-Rotary Conversion Triboelectric Nanogenerator (LRC-TENG), which incorporates a gear structure to convert linear motion into rotational motion and employs charge pumping to achieve efficient, prolonged output. The proposed TENG can sustain AC output for 3 s with a single push. This LRC-TENG is particularly well suited for applications such as stairways requiring safety lighting at night. Utilizing the LRC-TENG, when a person steps on a stair, it can illuminate the stairway for 3 s through more than 236 LEDs, ensuring safety during nighttime walking. Abstract

Currently change in cities is accelerating intricately and diversely because of technological advances, information floods, increased openness, and the rising standard of living. While city development depended on the activation of urban marketing, a city of importance and recognition is highlighted as one brand. To increase city brand value, it has become necessary to study the brand equity held by cities and to develop a strategy based on a new approach. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate how a city brand can be developed and through which kind of method. Therefore, the phenomenon of a city was investigated and analysed based on semiotics underpinning the communication of all phenomenon. The purpose of this research was to suggest a new perspective for city branding strategy and to develop a conceptual model for a city branding strategy that is an improvement on the strategies being used by industry and in academia. The proposed perspective is based on semiotics which is the analysis of the interaction between general objects and cultural phenomena. The conceptual model takes elements constituting a city and identifies the core categories comprising branding. From this, it is clear that sustainable city branding is possible, as city assets are developed and brand value is formed. The conceptual model of the city branding process has been positively evaluated through three case studies and five in-depth interviews with experts. The proposed model provides the basis for a city research plan and a tool for the management of the city branding process. The conceptual model offers several advantages as shown below:1. A holistic view of city branding strategy development; 2. A new perspective of city interpretation through semiotics; 3. An understanding of the interaction between city users (residents and visitors) and city with a cognition process and associated image; 4. A clarification of the roles of all component elements within the city branding strategy; 5. An integration of the component elements and core categories for city branding; 6. A new approach to city branding strategy through the conceptual model. Therefore, this research presents a robust theoretical basis for developing a new city branding strategy through the conceptual model.

21. Development and Evaluation of an Inductive Coupling-Based Contactless Current Charging System for High-Temperature Superconductor Coils

Abstract

This article addresses the design, manufacturing, and testing of a contactless current charging system for high-temperature superconductor (HTS) coils. Traditional methods of charging HTS coils typically involve power-driven techniques, which result in a substantial thermal load due to thermal conduction. To mitigate this issue, we developed a system using an inductive coupling technique. The design of this system focuses on optimizing the magnetic coupling coefficient to ensure efficient power transfer to the HTS coils. Essential components, such as a magnetic coupler, a resonance circuit, and a rectifier, were designed and manufactured to match the operating environment of the HTS coil. A series of practical current charging tests were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the system. The results from these tests confirmed the successful contactless charging of HTS coils, indicating the system's potential applicability in various HTS magnet applications.

22. Investigation of the Effects of Dampers on the Dynamic Characteristics of an Axial-Flux HTS Machine With an NI HTS Field Coil

Abstract

This paper presents research on the dynamic characteristics of electrical rotating machines using no-insulation (NI) high-temperature superconductor (HTS) field coils, particularly focusing on changes resulting from the application of dampers. Previous studies have indicated the potential for increased torque and armature current fluctuations in NI HTS machines compared to insulated HTS machines. NI winding enhances the electrical and thermal stability of HTS field coils, as overcurrent can be automatically bypassed through turn-to-turn contacts. However, the use of NI HTS field coils may compromise the operational stability of electric rotating machines under dynamic conditions. To address this issue, various studies are being conducted to increase the contact resistance between winding turns of the NI HTS coil. However, this could deteriorate the electrical and thermal stability of the HTS coil. Therefore, this study investigates the potential of improving the operational stability of electric rotating machines under dynamic conditions, like active short circuits, by applying dampers to the NI HTS machines.

26. Walking the life path to success: discovering the experiences of job-seeking young adults in Korea

Abstract

This thesis explores the job-seeking experiences of Korean young adults to see how the choices of future careers have been made. Its knowledge was gained by a qualitative research method which interprets the meanings of the participants' experiences. 12 interviews were conducted in total and in-depth narratives were presented to them. The theoretical approaches have made that two sociological theories from Hongjung Kim and Nikolas Rose provide insight by focusing on the social-economical structure of modern society. The results turned out that the ‘atmosphere’ of competition and ‘normalized path’ is guiding the lives of Korean young adults to believe and act in an economical way which can be conceptualized as ‘neoliberal culture’. Additionally, various emotions and many hardships experiences are observed though its logic was related to their situation that to endlessly seek their personal success which is forced by the ‘neoliberal culture’. However, even though the existing system is rigid, the participants were living a life of their own, by recognizing the power and logic of the structure and feeling true happiness through desiring their own dreams.

Bu çalışma L2 İspanyolca kitaplarının öğrenme sürecininbaşından sonuna kadar anlamlı bir şekilde rehberlik eden etkinlikler yoluylayeni sözcükler öğrenme sürecinde L2 öğrencilerine yardımcı olmada girdikavramını anahtar bir öge olarak benimseyip benimsemediklerini araştırmaktadır.Yapılan analizler sonucunda bu çalışmada incelenen ders kitaplarının genelolarak yeni kelimeleri ortak düzen içerisinde sunduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.Yeni kelimelerin sunulma düzenindeki bu belirgin benzerliklerine rağmen, anketekatılan ders kitaplarının girdi-temelli öğretme ve çıktı-temelli öğretimuygulamalarında farklılık gösterdikleri belirlenmiştir. Daha spesifik olarak,ankete katılan ders kitaplarında bulunan faaliyetler hem girdi hem de çıktı temelligörevlerde çeşitli derecelerde değişiklik göstermişlerdir. Bunlar aynı zamandagirdi tabanlı ve çıktı tabanlı faaliyetlerin sayısı ve iki tip faaliyetarasındaki mantıksal ilerleme bakımından da farklılık göstermiştir. Buçalışmanın bulguları, incelenen ders kitaplarının, yeni L2 kelime hazinesininüretilmesine önem vererek, çıktı temelli kelime öğretimi yönündeki eğilimigösterdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışma, daha önceki çalışmalardagösterildiği gibi, L2 öğretme ve öğrenmenin etkinliğine rağmen, girdi tabanlıöğretimin çoğu L2 ders kitabına sistematik olarak dahil edilmediğine vedolayısıyla teori ile pratik arasında bir boşluğa işaret ettiğine dair dahafazla kanıt sunmaktadır.
