Description, Wireless and passive bioelectronic medicines mimic the biological cues of the extracellular matrix., The biophysical characteristics of the extracellular matrix (ECM), such as a three-dimensional (3D) network and bioelectricity, have a profound influence on cell development, migration, function expression, etc. Here, inspired by these biophysical cues of ECM, we develop an electromechanical coupling bio-nanogenerator (bio-NG) composed of highly discrete piezoelectric fibers. It can generate surface piezopotential up to millivolts by cell inherent force and thus provide in situ electrical stimulation for the living cells. Besides, the unique 3D space in the bio-NGs provides an ECM-like growth microenvironment for cells. As a result, our bio-NGs effectively promote cell viability and development and, more importantly, maintain its specific functional expression. These advanced in vitro bio-NGs are expected to fill the gap between the inaccurate 2D systems and the expensive and time-consuming animal models, mimicking the complexity of the ECM and the physiological relevance of an in vivo biological system.

Adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) have been proved as an abundant and accessible cell source with the ability to differentiate into neuron-like cells. However, the low differentiation efficiency puts forward an important challenge to practical applications in clinic. Considering of the good biocompatibility of graphene-based materials and the potential interaction between graphene and cells mentioned in previous studies, herein, we investigated the effect of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) mats on neurogenic differentiation of the ADSCs. We demonstrated the excellent capabilities of graphene-based mats, especially GO to support the neural differentiation of ADSCs. By comparing the observation under an optical microscope and fluorescence microscope, the conversion rate of neuron-like cells reached about 90%. We consider that GO mat is better for promoting the differentiation of ADSCs into neuron-like cells, which compared to rGO based platforms. Meanwhile, we made an analysis of the mechanism by which graphene induced the differentiation of ADSCs to neuron-like cells. The data obtained here highlight the effect of GO mat on neurogenic differentiation of ADSCs and implicate the potential of graphene-based materials in application of neural tissue engineering for the limited self-repair capability of nerve cells.

Understanding the internal cellular processes of micron/nanoparticles will be important for particles toxicity studies or drug-delivery systems designing. The details and mechanisms of the cellular up-take process of micron/nano particles can hardly be described in real-time. In this study, cellular internalization of micron/nanoparticles was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy, flow cytometry and sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG). Model cell membranes such as substrate supported lipid bilayers and lipid vesicles were used in this research. Especially, SFG was used to examine the behavior of each leaflet of the lipid bilayer while interacting with micron/nanoparticles. Experiments of SFG show direct evidences that micron/nanoparticles attachment lead to the lipid orientation. Vesicle dye-leakage model were used to study long-term interactions on model membrane. Results from this study provide in-depth insight into the molecular interactions between micron/nanoparticles and cell membranes, which will help to understand the particles toxicity and will be useful for the designing of micron/nanoparticles for applications.

Electroactive nanofibrous scaffold is a vital tool for the study of the various biological research fields from bioelectronics to regenerative medicine, which can provide cell preferable 3D nanofiber architecture and programmed electrical signal. However, intrinsic non-biodegradability is a major problem that hinders its widespread application in the clinic. Herein, we designed, synthesized, and characterized shell/core poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/chitosan (CS) nanofibers by combining the electrospinning and recrystallization processes. Upon incorporating a trace amount of PEDOT (1.0 wt%), the resultant PEDOT/CS nanofibers exhibited low interfacial charge transfer impedance, high electrochemical stability, high electrical conductivity (up to 0.1945 S/cm), and ultrasensitive piezoelectric property (output voltage of 22.5 mV by a human hair prodding). With such unique electrical and conductive properties, PEDOT/CS nanofibers were further applied to brain neuroglioma cells (BNCs) to stimulate their adhesion, proliferation, growth, and development under an optimal external electrical stimulation (ES) and a pulse voltage of 400 mV/cm. ES-responsive PEDOT/CS nanofibers indeed promoted BNCs growth and development as indicated by a large number and density of axons. The synergetic interplay between external ES and piezoelectric voltage demonstrates new PEDOT-based nanofibers as implantable electroactive scaffolds for numerous applications in nerve tissue engineering, human health monitoring, brain mantle information extraction, and degradable microelectronic devices.

Nitrogen (N)-doped graphene (N-substituted or nitrogenated graphene) (NG) has become a new class of graphene material due to its modified properties such as the tunable work function, n-type semiconductivity, increasing biocompatibility, and, in particular, the synergistic function with various functional materials. However, the preparation of NG by a simple and effective method is still lacking. The modification of NG mainly depends on the N species and the N content. Thus, we focus on the recent progress in preparing methods of 2D NG and the respective key modulating parameters to modulate the N species and the N content. Furthermore, many effective charactering techniques are covered to accurately analyze the properties of N species, and the distribution and topography of N atoms. Also, we review the effect of N species on graphene, especially, the optical and electronic properties. Since constructing 3D structure is considered a promising strategy to prevent the restacking of 2D NG, the summary for preparing 3D NG is made on the basis of methodology of 2D NG. In a word, this review provides a reference for preparing 2D or 3D NG, modulating and characterizing N species, which are greatly contributed to the NG application.

Development of efficient adsorbent with low cost, simple and green production process, and zero secondary pollution for Cr(VI) removal in industrial applications is a great challenge for modern chemical and materials engineering. Here, we developed a new strategy for preparation of porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/graphene oxide (GO) nanofibers by simple one-step electrospinning of PAN/GO solution in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)/H2O mixed solvent. The resultant porous PAN/GO nanofibers possessed abundant nanopores (5–200 nm) and thus huge Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (164.2 ± 10.8 m2g−1) and excellent interfacial compatibility. The porous structure maximized the adsorption function of the doped GO nanosheets for Cr(VI) ions, an unprecedented experimental Cr(VI) ions adsorption capacity of 382.5 ± 6.2 mg/g was achieved. And the porous PAN/GO nanofibers also exhibited excellent regeneration, after 20 times adsorption–desorption test, the desorption efficiency of the Cr(VI) ions stably maintained more than 75%. More importantly, compared to the current complex chemical synthesis and material structure design methods of Cr(VI) ions adsorbent, the simple one-step electrospinning fully showed great technical advantages for industrial applications including efficient (100% raw material utilization), green (no any harmful chemical by-products), low cost (only PAN and 1.98 wt% GO). Therefore, we suggested that the porous PAN/GO nanofibers will be a promising candidate in industrial applications as a solid adsorbent for Cr(VI) ions adsorption.

Paclitaxel is broad-spectrum anticancer drug which has been widely used in clinic. However, traditional drug delivery often suffers from the scarcity of resources and systemic toxic side effects caused by the localization to non-tumor areas, rendering cancer treatment extremely challenging. To address this problem, we developed a novel multifunctional drug delivery system of a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) drug-loaded magnetic Janus particles (DMJPs) using electrohydrodynamic (EDH) co-jetting. The DMJPs were loaded with three compartments each with distinct function, i.e. paclitaxel for killing cancer cell, Fe3O4 nanoparticles for target location, and rhodamine B for fluorescence tracing, respectively. The Janus structure of the DMJPs, as demonstrated by the loaded nano-quantum dots CdS/ZnS and CdSe/ZnS in different compartments, enhanced not only the drug loading and encapsulation efficiency but also the cumulative release rate of the loaded drugs from DMJPs in different media. More importantly, DMJPs exhibited specific and high toxicity only to human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231), but not to mouse embryonic fibroblasts (NIH-3 T3). Consistently, DMJPs induced the higher lethal effect on cancer cells than paclitaxel suspension of high concentrations. Under guidance of external magnetic field, DMJPs can readily target and accumulate on and inside cancer cells for cell elimination. The specific targetability, selectivity, and toxicity of DMJPs on cancer cells would greatly avoid any potential side effects and reduce the overdose of drugs for conventional drug delivery. This work hopefully provides a new drug delivery system for the development of anticancer drug systems for clinical and precision medicine treatment.

Here we present a novel approach to prepare N-doped graphene under ambient conditions by denitrifying bacteria CFMI-1. The N element can be effectively introduced into graphene and 8.2% (atom %) N doping level can be achieved. N-doped graphene possesses a size around 300–600 nm and an average thickness of 1–2 nm.

This study reports a facile method for the fabrication of aligned Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) fibers and tubes based on electrospinning and oxidative chemical polymerization. Discrete PEDOT nano- and microfibers and nano- and microtubes are difficult to fabricate quickly and reproducibly. We employed poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymers that were loaded with polymerizable 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) monomer to create aligned nanofiber assemblies using a rotating glass mandrel during electrospinning. The EDOT monomer/PLGA polymer blends were then polymerized by exposure to an oxidative catalyst (FeCl3). PEDOT was polymerized by continuously dripping a FeCl3 solution onto the glass rod during electrospinning. The resulting PEDOT fibers were conductive, aligned and discrete. Fiber bundles could be easily produced in lengths of several centimeters. The PEDOT sheath/PLGA core fibers were immersed in chloroform to remove the PLGA and any residual EDOT resulting in hollow PEDOT tubes. This approach made it possible to easily generate large areas of aligned PEDOT fibers/tubes. The structure and properties of the aligned assemblies were measured using optical microscopy, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and DC conductivity measurements. We also demonstrated that the aligned PEDOT sheath/PLGA core fiber assemblies could be used in supporting and directing the extension of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in vitro.

Electrospun polymer nanofibers show promise as components of scaffolds for tissue engineering because of their ability to orient regenerating cells. Our research focuses on aligned electrospun fiber scaffolds for nerve regeneration. Critical to this are highly aligned fibers, which are frequently difficult to manufacture reproducibly. Here we show that three variables: the distance between the spinneret tip and collector, the addition of DMF to the solvent, and placement of an aluminum sheet on the spinneret together greatly improve the alignment of electrospun poly-L-lactide (PLLA) nanofibers. We identified the most important variable as tip-to-collector distance. Nanofiber alignment was maximal at 30 cm compared to shorter distances. DMF:chloroform (1:9) improved nanofiber uniformity and was integral to maintaining a uniform stream over the 30 cm tip-to-collector distance. Other ratios caused splattering of the solution or flattening or beading of the fibers and non-uniform fiber diameter. The aluminum sheet helped to stabilize the electric field and improve fiber alignment provided that it was placed at 1 cm behind the tip, while other distances destabilized the stream and worsened alignment. This study demonstrates that control of these variables produces dramatic improvement in reproducibly obtaining high alignment and uniform morphology of electrospun PLLA nanofibers.

Primary hepatocytes cultured in three dimensional tissue constructs composed of multicellular aggregates maintain normal differentiated cellular function in vitro while cultured monolayers do not. Here, we report a technique to induce hepatocyte aggregate formation using type-I collagen-coated poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) discrete aligned nanofibers (disAFs) by providing limited cell-substrate adhesion strength and restricting cell migration to uniaxial movement. Kinetics of aggregate formation, morphology and biochemical activities of rat hepatocyte aggregates were tested over a 15 day culture period. Evidence was provided that physical cues from disAFs quickly induced the formation of aggregates. After 3 days in culture, 88.3% of free hepatocytes on disAFs were incorporated into aggregates with an average diameter of 61 +/- 18 microm. Hepatocyte aggregates formed on disAFs displayed excellent cell retention, cell activity and stable functional expression in terms of albumin secretion, urea synthesis and phase I and II (CYP1A and UGT) metabolic enzyme activity compared to monolayer culture of hepatocytes on tissue culture plastic (TCP) with type-I collagen as well as on meshes of type-I collagen-coated PLLA random nanofibers (meshRFs). These results suggest that disAFs may be a suitable method to maintain large-scale hepatic cultures with high activity for tissue engineering research and potential therapeutic applications, such as bioartificial liver devices.

Objective: To compare the conventional etching and primer method (CEP) and the self-etching primer method (SEP) in rebonding brackets. Methods: Forty human maxillary second premolars extracted for orthodontic purpose were randomly divided into 4 equal groups. Group 1 and Group 2 were bonded using the CEP method; Group 3 and Group 4 using the SEP method. All the brackets were debonded and 40 new brackets were rebonded with four different protocols after surface cleaning: Group 1: CEP + adhesive; Group 2: CEP without etch step + adhesive; Group 3: SEP + adhesive; Group 4: non-acidic primer + adhesive. Then, the shear bond strength (SBS) of each group was tested and the measurements of adhesive remnant index scores (ARI) and SEM examination were performed. Results: The mean SBSs for Group 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 14.18, 6.57, 11.90, 5.91 MPa, respectively. Statistical differences of the SBS existed between Group 1 and 2 (P < 0.05) and between Group 3 and 4 (P < 0.05). No difference was found between Group 1 and 3, or Group 2 and 4. Conclusion: Omission of the acid-etching step in rebonding orthodontic brackets may be adequate for the clinical requirement. No differences in SBS and ARI of the rebonded brackets were showed between CEP and SEP methods.

Primary rat oligodendocytes were cultured in the presence of electron-spun nanofibers of varying sizes as a model to study myelination processes in the mammalian central nervous system. The authors study the role of fiber diameter on the initiation of concentric wrapping by oligodendrocytes. Current methods for studying central nervous system myelination necessitate permissive axonal substrates conducive to myelin wrapping by oligodendrocytes. We have developed a neuron-free culture system in which electron-spun nanofibers of varying sizes substitute for axons as a substrate for oligodendrocyte myelination, thereby allowing manipulation of the biophysical elements of axonal-oligodendroglial interactions. To investigate axonal regulation of myelination, this system effectively uncouples the role of molecular (inductive) cues from that of biophysical properties of the axon. We use this method to uncover the causation and sufficiency of fiber diameter in the initiation of concentric wrapping by rat oligodendrocytes. We also show that oligodendrocyte precursor cells display sensitivity to the biophysical properties of fiber diameter and initiate membrane ensheathment before differentiation. The use of nanofiber scaffolds will enable screening for potential therapeutic agents that promote oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination and will also provide valuable insight into the processes involved in remyelination.

Electrospinning is a technique for producing micro- to nano-scale fibers. Fibers can be electrospun with varying degrees of alignment, from highly aligned to completely random. In addition, fibers can be spun from a variety of materials, including biodegradable polymers such as poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). These characteristics make electrospun fibers suitable for a variety of scaffolding applications in tissue engineering. Our focus is on the use of aligned electrospun fibers for nerve regeneration. We have previously shown that aligned electrospun PLLA fibers direct the outgrowth of both primary sensory and motor neurons in vitro. We maintain that the use of a primary cell culture system is essential when evaluating biomaterials to model real neurons found in vivo as closely as possible. Here, we describe techniques used in our laboratory to electrospin fibrous scaffolds and culture dorsal root ganglia explants, as well as dissociated sensory and motor neurons, on electrospun scaffolds. However, the electrospinning and/or culture techniques presented here are easily adapted for use in other applications.

Liver tissue engineering requires a perfect extracellular matrix (ECM) for primary hepatocytes culture to maintain high level of liver-specific functions and desirable mechanical stability. The aim of this study was to develop a novel natural nanofibrous scaffold with surface-galactose ligands to enhance the bioactivity and mechanical stability of primary hepatocytes in culture. The nanofibrous scaffold was fabricated by electrospinning a natural material, galactosylated chitosan (GC), into nanofibers with an average diameter of approximately 160 nm. The GC nanofibrous scaffolds displayed slow degradation and suitable mechanical properties as an ECM for hepatocytes according to the evaluation of disintegration and Young's modulus testing. The results of morphology characterization, double-staining fluorescence assay and function detection showed that hepatocytes cultured on GC nanofibrous scaffold formed stably immobilized 3D flat aggregates and exhibited superior cell bioactivity with higher levels of liver-specific function maintenance in terms of albumin secretion, urea synthesis and cytochrome P-450 enzyme than 3D spheroid aggregates formed on GC films. These spheroid aggregates could be detached easily during culture period from the flat GC films. We suggest such GC-based nanofibrous scaffolds could be useful for various applications such as bioartificial liver-assist devices and tissue engineering for liver regeneration as primary hepatocytes culture substrates.

Tissue engineering holds great promise in providing vascular grafts as substitutes for damaged small-diameter blood vessels. Two of the key factors in vascular tissue engineering are biocompatible scaffolds that mimic the effects of extracellular matrix and the source of seeding cells. Synthetic poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) nanofibers has been shown to be excellent scaffolds for tissue engineering. Outgrowth endothelial cells (OECs) isolated from human peripheral blood could also be expanded in vitro and stably maintain the differentiated phenotypes and could be used as the seeding cells for engineering autologous vascular crafts. Here we tested the possibility of combining these two together. We found that PLLA nanofibers are not only biocompatible with OECs originally isolated from rabbit peripheral blood, the aligned PLLA fibers actually promoted and guided their sustained proliferation. These results suggest that aligned PLLA could be excellent both as the scaffolds and as a promoter of cell growth during vascular tissue engineering.

To enhance cell attachment and promote liver functions of hepatocytes cultured in bioreactors, a chitosan nanofiber scaffold was designed and prepared via electrospinning. Effects of the scaffold on hepatocyte adhesion, viability and function were then investigated. Data showed that hepatocytes on chitosan nanofiber scaffold exhibited better viability and tighter cell-substrate contact than cells on regular chitosan film. In addition, urea synthesis, albumin secretion and cytochrome P450 activity of hepatocytes on chitosan nanofiber scaffold were all 1.5 to 2 folds higher than the controls. Glycogen synthesis was also increased as compared with the controls. These results suggested the potential application of this chitosan nanofiber scaffold as a suitable substratum for hepatocyte culturing in bioreactors.

To intruduce conductive biomaterial into liver tissue engineering, a conductive nanofiber scaffold, polypyrrole/poly(lactic-co-glycolic)acid(PLGA), was designed and prepared via electro-spinning and oxidative polymerization. Effects of the scaffold on hepatocyte adhesion, viability and function were then investigated. SEM revealed pseudopodium formation and abundant extracellular matrix on the surface of PLGA membrane and polypyrrole/PLGA membrane. The adhesion rate, cellular activity, urea synthesis and albumin secretion of the hepatocytes cultured on polypyrrole/PLGA group were similar to those on the PLGA group, but were significantly higher than those on the control group. There were no significant differences in concentrations of LDH and TNF-α among three groups. These results suggested the potential application of this conductive nanofiber scaffold as a suitable substratum for hepatocyte culturing in liver tissue engineering.

ZnO nanowires with the average diameter of 20 nm and the length of longer than 10 μm were synthesized on GaAs substrate by chemical vapor deposition（CVD）. As-doped ZnO nanowires were obtained by annealing the samples at 600 ℃ for 30 min in oxygen. Single ZnO nanowire field effect transistors（FET） were fabricated by electron beam exposure and magnetron sputtering deposition and Ti/Au deposited as ohmic-contact electrodes. Based on the electrical properties of the single ZnO nanowire FET before and after annealing, we verified that p-type ZnO nanowire can be obtained by As doping effectively. The parameters of the single As doped ZnO nanowire FET were as follows: the transconductance was 35 nA/V, the hole density was 1.4×1018 cm-3, and the mobility was 6.0 cm2/V·s. We also obtained the photoluminescence spectrum of single As-doped ZnO nanowire: strong ultraviolet light at 383 nm, weaker yellow-green light, and red light due to the existence of AsZn-2VZn shallow acceptors.

A Schottky type light-emitting diode of ZnO nanowire was fabricated based on the principle of luminescence of Schottky barrier heterojunction. Driven by a voltage of above 6 V, an EL spectrum was obtained. The spectrum consisted of two peaks: one is centered at a wavelength of the ultraviolet 392nm, and the other at the visible 525nm. The mechanism of electroluminescence of this device was analyzed according to the rectifying I-V curve and the energy band structure.

The ultraviolet light emitting diode based on n-ZnO-nanowire/p-Si heterojunction was fabricated. Quasi-arrays of ZnO nanowires were grown on p-Si substrates using a simple low-temperature hydrothermal method that would be easily extended to mass production. As-grown ZnO nanowires showed good crystallinity, a preferable c axial orientation, and strong ultraviolet emission under optical excitation. Different kinds of cathodes were made to form the electrical contact. The I-V characteristics were diode-like. Under forward bias, the heterojunction diode emitted strong ultraviolet light at 387nm and weaker green light.

ZnO nanowire thin film was prepared by chemical solution method and a ZnO nanowire-based electroluminescence device has been successfully developed. The device was driven by the alternating current and presented a good RC behavior. Under the action of applied bias, light emission in the ultraviolet region with the wavelength of 387 nm and in the visible region with 552 nm has been observed. The mechanism of electroluminescence and its frequency dependence are discussed in this paper by analyzing the electric properties of the device and the structure of energy band of ZnO semiconductor.

We demonstrate logic circuits with carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs). The p-type CNTFETs are fabricated based on single-walled carbon nanotubes and n-type CNTFETs are fabricated based on nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes. To be specitic, we demonstrate three types of logic circuits with CNTFETs, which include an inverter (a p-type CNTFET), a complementary inverter (a p-type CNTFET and an n-type CNTFET in a single clip), and a logic NOR (two p-type CNTFETs).

We have fabricated p-type and n-type carbon nanotube transistors (CNTFETs) by using high and low work-function metals Pt and Al as contact electrodes， respectively. The band structures indicate that the work functions of contact metals play an important role in operation mechanism of CNTFETs. We can obtain fine-tuning of Schottky barrier heights for p- and n-channel conductions by changing the contact metals. These results can be explained by taking into account the work functions of the contact metals.

Nanotube rings were fabricated with a high yield by heating the lightly etched c arbon nanotubes under ambient conditions that were produced by chemical vapor deposition method. These rings, typically 300nm in diameter, were characterized using atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning ele ctron microscopy. The structure and yield of nanotube rings depended strongly o n the heating temperature and time. Our researches suggest that the optimal heat ing temperature ranges from 510 ℃ to 530 ℃, and that the heating time up to 1 20 min is favorable for the increase of the yield. At high temperatures, the est erification of carboxyl functional groups attached at the nanotube ends resulted in the bending of straight nanotubes into closed rings.
