Abstract

For any synchronizing $n$-state deterministic automaton, \v{C}ern\'{y} conjectures the existence of a synchronizing word of length at most $(n-1)^2$. We prove that there exists a synchronizing word of length at most $2n^2 - 7n + 7$ for every synchronizing $n$-state deterministic automaton that satisfies the following two properties: 1. The image of the action of each letter contains at least $n-1$ states; 2. The actions of bijective letters generate a transitive permutation group on the state set.

2. Around Don's conjecture for binary completely reachable automata

Abstract

A word $w$ is called a reaching word of a subset $S$ of states in a deterministic finite automaton (DFA) if $S$ is the image of $Q$ under the action of $w$. A DFA is called completely reachable if every non-empty subset of the state set has a reaching word. A conjecture states that in every $n$-state completely reachable DFA, for every $k$-element subset of states, there exists a reaching word of length at most $n(n-k)$. We present infinitely many completely reachable DFAs with two letters that violate this conjecture. A subfamily of completely reachable DFAs with two letters, is called standardized DFAs, introduced by Casas and Volkov (2023). We prove that every $k$-element subset of states in an $n$-state standardized DFA has a reaching word of length $\le n(n-k) + n - 1$. Finally, we confirm the conjecture for standardized DFAs with additional properties, thus generalizing a result of Casas and Volkov (2023)., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of three screening questionnaires for COPD in the community residents of Songjiang District， Shanghai， and to provide a basis for selecting COPD screening questionnaire and process that are more suitable.MethodsCommunity residents aged 40 years or over were randomly selected from the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank for the study with screening questionnaires and spirometry. Questionnaires included the COPD screening questionnaire （COPD-SQ）， the COPD population screener （COPD-PS） and the revised COPD diagnostic questionnaire （revised-CDQ）. Evaluation of the efficacy of these questionnaires was based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve （AUC） of the subjects. DeLong test was used to compare the accuracy of different questionnaires； Z test was used to compare the accuracy of different cut-off values for the same questionnaire.ResultsAmong 3 184 community residents， a total of 259 （8.1%） COPD patients were screened by spirometry. AUC values of these 3 screening questionnaires were >0.7 indicating that they were reliable COPD screening tools. The sensitivity and specificity of the questionnaires at the recommended cut-off values were COPD-SQ （63.7% and 72.2%）， COPD-PS （12.0% and 96.1%）， and revised CDQ （78.8% and 52.7%）， with the COPD-SQ having the highest screening accuracy （AUC=0.754）. The optimal and recommended cut-off values for the three questionnaires differed in this population， but the difference in accuracy was statistically significant only for COPD-PS. The optimal cut-off values for the three questionnaires differed between male and female， and the sensitivity and accuracy of COPD-SQ and COPD-PS improved when lower cut-off values were used for women. The AUC was greater when two questionnaires were utilized simultaneously for screening， but the differences were not statistically significant.ConclusionThe COPD-SQ is recommended for primary COPD screening； a lower cut-off value for women should be considered. The COPD screening questionnaire needs to be further improved for the early diagnosis and treatment of COPD patients.

Abstract

Suppose that the vertex set of a connected graph $G$ is $V(G)=\{v_1,\cdots,v_n\}$. Then we denote by $Tr_{G}(v_i)$ the sum of distances between $v_i$ and all other vertices of $G$. Let $Tr(G)$ be the $n\times n$ diagonal matrix with its $(i,i)$-entry equal to $Tr_{G}(v_{i})$ and $D(G)$ be the distance matrix of $G$. Then $Q_{D}(G)=Tr(G)+D(G)$ is the distance signless Laplacian matrix of $G$. The largest eigenvalues of $Q_D(G)$ is called distance signless Laplacian spectral radius of $G$. Abstract

ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of diabetes mellitus among community population in Songjiang District of Shanghai， and to provide scientific basis for prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus.MethodsBased on the baseline data of the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort （2016‒2017） and local medication database， the prevalence of diabetes in the cohort was described， and the influencing factors for the prevalence of diabetes in different genders were analyzed.ResultsAmong 35 928 participants， males accounted for 40.57%， and the median age was 58 years old. There were 5 342 diabetic patients with a crude prevalence rate of 14.87% and the standardized prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus was 7.57%. We investigate several antipodal spherical designs on whether we can choose half of the points, one from each antipodal pair, such that they are balanced at the origin. In particular, root systems of type A, D and E, minimal points of Leech lattice and the unique tight 7-design on $S^{22}$ are studied. We also study a half of an antipodal spherical design from the viewpoint of association schemes and spherical designs of harmonic index $T$.

Abstract

The discrete element method (DEM) is commonly used to study various powders in motion during transportation, screening, mixing, etc., this requires several microscopic parameters to characterize the complex mechanical behavior of the particles. Herein, a new discrete element parameter calibration method is proposed to calibrate the ultrafine agglomerated powder (recycled polyurethane powder). Optimal Latin hypercube sampling and virtual simulation experiments were conducted using the commercial DEM software, the microscopic variables included the static friction coefficient between the particles, collision recovery coefficient, Johnson&ndash, Kendall&ndash, Roberts surface energy, static friction coefficient between the particles and wall, and collision recovery coefficient. A predictive model based on genetic-algorithm-optimized feedforward neural network (back propagation) was developed to calibrate the microscopic DEM simulation parameters. The cycle search algorithm and mean-shift cluster analysis were used to confirm the input parameters&rsquo, range by comparing the mean value of the dynamic angle of repose measured via the batch accumulation test. These parameters were verified by the baffle lifting method and the rotating drum method. This calibration method, once successfully developed, will be suitable for use in a variety of fine viscous powder dynamic flow conditions.

Abstract

TAP46 is a protein phosphatase2A (PP2A)-associated protein that regulates PP2A activity in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). To study how PP2A is involved in abscisic acid (ABA) signaling in plants, we studied the function of TAP46 in ABA-regulated seed maturation and seedling development. Expression of TAP46 coincides with the action of ABA in developing seeds and during seed germination, and the TAP46 transcript reaches to the highest level in mature seeds. Real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis indicates that external ABA can increase TAP46 transcript level transiently during seed germination. Overexpression of TAP46 increases plant sensitivity to ABA, while tap46 knockdown mutants are less sensitive to ABA during seed germination, suggesting that TAP46 functions positively in ABA signaling. Overexpression of TAP46 also leads to lower PP2A activity, while tap46-1 knockdown mutant displays higher PP2A activity, suggesting that TAP46 negatively regulates PP2A activity in Arabidopsis. Both TAP46 and PP2A interact with the ABA-regulated transcription factor ABA INSENSITIVE5 (ABI5) in vivo, and TAP46's binding to ABI5 can stabilize ABI5. Furthermore, TAP46's binding to the phosphorylated ABI5 may prevent PP2A or PP2A-like protein phosphatases from removing the phosphate from ABI5, thereby maintaining ABI5 in its active form. Overexpression of TAP46 and inhibition of activities of PP2A or PP2A-like protein phosphatases can increase transcript levels of several ABI5-regulated genes, suggesting that TAP46 is a positive factor in the ABA-regulated gene expression in Arabidopsis.

26. Overexpression of the PP2A-C5gene confers increased salt tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract

ABSTRACTProtein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) was shown to play important roles in biotic and abiotic stress signaling pathways in plants. PP2A is made of 3 subunits: a scaffolding subunit A, a regulatory subunit B, and a catalytic subunit C. It is believed that the B subunit recognizes specific substrates and the C subunit directly acts on the selected substrates, whereas the A subunit brings a B subunit and a C subunit together to form a specific PP2A holoenzyme. Because there are multiple isoforms for each PP2A subunit, there could be hundreds of novel PP2A holoenzymes in plants. For an example, there are 3 A subunits, 17 B subunits, and 5 C subunits in Arabidopsis, which could form 255 different PP2A holoenzymes. Understanding the roles of these PP2A holoenzymes in various signaling pathways is a challenging task. In a recent study,1we discovered that PP2A-C5, the catalytic subunit 5 of PP2A, plays an important role in salt tolerance in Arabidopsis. We found that a knockout mutant of PP2A-C5(i.e. pp2a-c5–1) was very sensitive to salt treatments, whereas PP2A-C5-overexpressing plants were more tolerant to salt stresses. Genetic analyses between pp2a-c5–1and Salt-Overly-Sensitive(SOS) mutants indicated that PP2A-C5does not function in the same pathway as SOSgenes. Using yeast 2-hybrid analysis, we found that PP2A-C5 interacts with several vacuolar membrane bound chloride channel proteins. We hypothesize that these vacuolar chloride channel proteins might be PP2A-C5's substrates in vivo, and the action of PP2A-C5 on these channel proteins could increase or activate their activities, thereby result in accumulation of the chloride and sodium contents in vacuoles, leading to increased salt tolerance in plants.
