The activity of the Portuguese fishing fleet operating near seamounts of the Madeira Tore geologic complex was analyzed. The main objective is to identify the different fisheries taking place in the area, characterize the spatial patterns of vessels activity and estimate the fishing intensity, thus contributing to better inform management decisions. Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and e-logbook data for the period 2012–2014 were used. The combined analysis of these data allowed the identification of fishing events and the estimation of the fishing intensity by gear type, as well as the characterization of general patterns relating to fishing operations. A total of 47 vessels displayed fishing activity in the studied area, mainly longliners based either on the mainland or the Madeira archipelago, visiting different seamounts in fishing trips lasting two to three weeks, and a few pole and line bait boats. Bottom and pelagic longlining alternate throughout the year, the former mostly in spring and summer, targeting the wreckfish Polyprion americanus and the European conger, Conger conger, while the latter is carried out in autumn and winter using a surface longline targeting the swordfish Xiphias gladius and a drifting longline set deeper in the water column, targeting the black scabbard fish Aphanopus carbo. A global evaluation of the fishing intensity and estimation of fishing impact in this area calls for the availability of VMS data, elogbooks and landing declarations from non-Portuguese fleets, making monitoring in these areas a top priority to assess the sustainability of human activities. Combination of observations and Mercator Ocean operational model (PSY4 hereafter) outputs provided insights on the recent oceanic conditions in the changing Western Eurasian and Nansen basins, entry region for the warm and salty Atlantic Water (AW) to the Arctic Ocean. Autonomous platforms showed that the Western Eurasian Basin exhibited a fresher surface layer and shallower warm AW layer in 2017 than in the 2005‐2012 World Ocean Atlas climatology. PSY4 brought insights on the mesoscale structures observed in the halocline and warm layer. In particular, in the Nansen Basin a large mesoscale structure of AW from the boundary current turned into an anticyclonic eddy after the platforms passage. A second AW structure northwest of the Yermak Plateau, was a branch of AW recirculating back toward Fram Strait. The performance of PSY4 was assessed using independent observations over 2007-2020 in the Western Nansen Basin (WNB). We took advantage of 14 years of fields from PSY4 to examine winter conditions in the WNB over 2007-2020. PSY4 showed that deep winter convection and recurrent outflows from troughs northeast of Svalbard dramatically modified the AW. The northern Yermak Plateau-Sofia Deep and continental slope areas became “Marginal Convection Zones" in 2011 with, from then on, occurrences of ice-free conditions and mixed layer depths deeper than 200m in winter, and highly variable ocean-to-atmosphere heat fluxes. PSY4 also showed changes in circulation in the WNB over 2008-2020, with the strengthening of the Yermak Branch, which fed the southward Return Yermak Branch along the eastern flank of the Plateau. PSY4 highlighted the onset of new AW pathways: a recurrent anticyclonic circulation established in Sofia Deep. An offshore AW circulation developed downstream of the Yermak Plateau (following the 3800m isobaths). East of 20°E, additional AW from boundary current was injected in this offshore circulation, via enhanced basin-ward mesoscale activity., L’analyse combinée d’observations et de sorties du modèle opérationnel Mercator Océan (appelé PSY4) a apporté un nouvel éclairage sur les récentes conditions océaniques du Bassin Eurasien Arctique occidental. Les mesures physiques collectées par deux plateformes autonomes dans le Bassin Eurasien occidental (0-350 m) ont indiqué que la couche de surface observée en 2017 était moins salée, et la couche chaude des eaux Atlantiques était moins profonde qu’en 2007-2012 (climatologie WOA13). PSY4 a apporté des informations complémentaires sur la nature des structures de méso-échelle documentées in-situ: dans le Bassin Nansen, une structure d’eaux Atlantiques issue du courant de bord a évolué en un tourbillon anticyclonique, tandis qu’une seconde structure à l’ouest du Plateau de Yermak concordait avec une branche d’eaux Atlantiques recirculant vers le Détroit de Fram. Les 14 années de sorties PSY4 ont montré qu’en hiver, les propriétés des eaux Atlantiques ont été considérablement modifiées par la convection hivernale profonde et par l’écoulement récurrent d’eaux moins chaudes et salées venant du plateau continental. Les régions du Plateau de Yermak et du talus continental sont devenues des « Zones Marginales de Convection » avec, à partir de 2011, l’absence occasionnelle de banquise en hiver ainsi que des couches de mélanges et flux océan-atmosphère fortement variables. Enfin, PSY4 a indiqué des changements de circulation dans le Bassin Nansen occidental, avec l’intensification de la Yermak Branch allant alimenter la Return Yermak Branch sur le flanc est du Plateau. PSY4 a également souligné la mise en place de nouveaux chemins empruntés par les eaux Atlantiques: dans le Sofia Deep, une circulation anticyclonique s’est développée. En aval du Plateau de Yermak, un courant s’est mis en place le long de l’isobathe 3800 m. A l’est de 20°E, ce courant a été alimenté par l’injection régulière de structures de méso-échelles issues du courant de bord.

The present study reports the occurrence of several specimens of the African caridean shrimp Lysmata uncicornis Holthuis & Maurin, 1952 in the NE Atlantic coast (Gulf of Cadiz, Spain and the Algarve, Portugal). Lysmata uncicornis is a poorly studied species that has been originally described from the Atlantic waters of Morocco, where it was first collected inside the port of Casablanca in a rocky bottom at 4–5-m depth. While no scientific publication has previously reported this species outside the waters of Morocco, several specimens have been collected in the coastal waters of the Gulf of Cadiz and the Algarve. This species may be able to expand successfully northward along European waters, probably favoured by global warming. It is possible that this expansion may also be enhanced through the marine aquarium trade. Recently, Lysmata arvoredensis Giraldes, Macedo, Brandão, Baeza & Freire, 2018 a new species of shrimp from the south coast of Brazil was described. However, morphological and genetic comparisons revealed no differences between L. uncicornis and L. arvoredensis. Therefore, L. arvoredensis should be considered as a junior synonym of L. uncicornis. While L. uncicornis may well be an amphi-Atlantic species, such as L. grabhami (Gordon, 1935), for now, the introduction of L. uncicornis in Brazilian waters cannot be ruled out., Financial support was given by CSIC through Intramural Research program 2018 under grant number 201830I081. 14 páginas, 6 figuras, 4 tablas, Prokaryotic abundance, activity and community composition were studied in the euphotic, intermediate and deep waters off the Galician coast (NW Iberian margin) in relation to the optical characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Microbial (archaeal and bacterial) community structure was vertically stratified. Among the Archaea, Euryarchaeota, especially Thermoplasmata, was dominant in the intermediate waters and decreased with depth, whereas marine Thaumarchaeota, especially Marine Group I, was the most abundant archaeal phylum in the deeper layers. The bacterial community was dominated by Proteobacteria through the whole water column. However, Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidetes occurrence was considerable in the upper layer and SAR202 was dominant in deep waters. Microbial composition and abundance were not shaped by the quantity of dissolved organic carbon, but instead they revealed a strong connection with the DOM quality. Archaeal communities were mainly related to the fluorescence of DOM (which indicates respiration of labile DOM and generation of refractory subproducts), while bacterial communities were mainly linked to the aromaticity/age of the DOM produced along the water column. Relationships between the zooplankton community and various environmental factors (salinity, temperature, sampling depth and bottom depth) were established in the European Arctic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) using multivariate statistics. Three main zooplankton communities were identified: an Atlantic Shallow Community (AtSC), an Arctic Shallow Community (ArSC) and a Deep Water Community (DWC). All species belonging to AtSC and ArSC were pooled and their relative abundances in the total zooplankton calculated with respect to a particular layer (surface, mid and deep strata), regions (the Barents Sea, Fram Strait and the waters off northern Svalbard), years (1999 or 2003) and seasons (spring or autumn). Mapping of the proportions of Arctic and Atlantic species led to the conclusion that zooplankton from the MIZs do not exactly follow complementary water masses, although the general pattern of AtSC and ArSC dominance accords with the physical oceanography of the study area (AtW and ArW respectively). The mid layer proved to be a better predictor of mesozooplankton distribution than the unstable conditions near the surface.

In the marine environment there are records of invasive species in almost all phyla, including crustaceans, and the portunid crabs of the genus Charybdis are among the most widespread invasive groups. We report the first record of Charybdis variegata (Fabricius, 1798) from the western Atlantic coast. This species was collected on an intertidal rocky shore near Santos Harbor, São Paulo state, Brazil. Of 311 portunid crabs sampled, 309 individuals belonged to the non-indigenous Charybdis hellerii (A. Milne Edwards, 1867), one was a native Cronius ruber (Lamarck, 1818), and one was identified as the non-indigenous Charybdis variegata. This individual was a juvenile female measuring 27.5 mm in carapace width. The taxonomic traits used for species identification, as well as a morphological comparison between C. hellerii and C. variegata are presented. The introduction route and establishment status of this species are also discussed.
