The global incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) continues to rise in recent years. Research has shown that GDM can increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women and lead to malignant intergenerational circulation. The etiology of GDM is complex and the pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Maternal dietary assessment and guidance is the first-line method for managing GDM in clinical practice. Reasonable diet plays an important role in gut microbia and its metabolites during pregnancy, and the dysfunction of gut microbia is closely related to the occurrence of metabolic diseases. It has been shown that gut microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) and bile acids are strongly influenced by diet and play an important role in metabolic disorders related to insulin resistance (such as GDM). Progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases by improving gut microbia through medical nutrition therapy, which provides a new direction for the control of GDM. The status quo of GDM, the characteristics and alteration of gut microbia in pregnant women with GDM, the GDM-related gut microbial metabolites, and the feasible prevention and treatment of GDM by targeting gut microbia and its metabolites are reviewed.

The dynamic predator–prey relations in the food web are vital for understanding the function and structure of ecosystems. Dietary estimation is a research hotspot of quantitative ecology, providing key insights into predator–prey relationships. One of the most promising approaches is quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA), which is the first generation of statistical tools to estimate the quantitative trophic predator–prey relationships by comparing the fatty acid (FA) signatures among predators and their prey. QFASA has been continuously widely applied, refined and extended since its introduction. This article reviewed the research progress of QFASA from development and application. QFASA reflects the long-term diet of predator, and provides the quantitative dietary composition of predator, but it is sensitive to the metabolism of predator. The calibration coefficients (CCs) and the FA subset are two crucial parameters to explain the metabolism of predators, but the incorrect construction or improper use of CCs and the FA subset may cause bias in dietary estimation. Further study and refinement of the QFASA approach is needed to identify recommendations for which CCs and subsets of FA work best for different taxa and systems.

Pesticide residues in meat is of growing concern due to possible adverse effects on humans. Pesticide levels were assessed in five edible cattle parts: muscle, liver, kidney and tongue tissues to determine human health risk associated with consumption of these tissues. Health risk estimates were analysed using estimated daily intake (EDI), hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) for two (2) age/weight categories: 1–11years/30 kg for children while 70 kg was used for adult. Risks were categorized for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health effects and measured at the average, maximum, 50th and 95th percentiles of the measured exposure concentrations (MEC). Total pesticide residues ranged from 2.38 to 3.86 μg/kg (muscle), 3.58 to 6.3 μg/kg (liver), 1.87 to 4.59 μg/kg (kidney) and 2.54 to 4.35 μg/kg (tongue). Residual pesticide concentrations in the tissues were in the order: Liver > Tongue > Muscle > Kidney. The concentrations of all the assessed pesticides observed in the tissues were however lower than the recommended maximum residual limits (MRLs). Human health risk estimations for the children showed EDI values for heptachlor epoxide, aldrin and dieldrin exceeding threshold values. Non-cancer risk posed to children on consumption of contaminated cattle parts showed HQ values for heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, dieldrin and HI values for organochlorines exceeding 1, indicating the possibility of non-carcinogenic health risks to consumers especially children from consumption of cattle meat from the selected abattoirs.

The main goal of the present research was to explore the seasonal variation of deoxynivalenol (DON) in wheat, corn, and their products, collected during 2018-2019. Samples of 449 of wheat and products and 270 samples of corn and their products were examined using reverse-phase liquid chromatography with a UV detector. The findings of the present work showed that 104 (44.8%) samples of wheat and products from the summer season, and 91 (41.9%) samples from winter season were contaminated with DON (concentration limit of detections (LOD) to 2145 µg/kg and LOD to 2050 µg/kg), from summer and winter seasons, respectively. In corn and products, 87 (61.2%) samples from summer and 57 (44.5%) samples from winter season were polluted with DON with levels ranging from LOD to 2967 µg/kg and LOD to 2490 µg/kg, from the summer and winter season, respectively. The highest dietary intake of DON was determined in wheat flour 8.84 µg/kg body weight/day from the summer season, and 7.21 µg/kg body weight/day from the winter season. The findings of the work argued the need to implement stringent guidelines and create awareness among farmers, stakeholders, and traders of the harmful effect of DON. It is mostly observed that cereal crops are transported and stockpiled in jute bags, which may absorb moisture from the environment and produce favorable conditions for fungal growth. Therefore, these crops must store in polyethylene bags during transportation and storage, and moisture should be controlled. It is highly desirable to use those varieties that are more resistant to fungi attack. Humidity and moisture levels need to be controlled during storage and transportation.
