Production of diamond coatings on titanium substrates has demonstrated as a promising strategy for applications ranging from biosensing to hard tissue engineering. The present study focuses on monitoring the nucleation and growth of bone-like carbonated-hydroxyapatite (C-HA) on polycrystalline diamond (PCD) synthetized on titanium substrate by means of a hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HF-CVD) method. The surface terminations of diamond coatings were selectively modified by oxidative treatments. The process of the C-HA deposition, accomplished by precipitation from simulated body fluid (SBF), was monitored from 3 to 20 days by Raman spectroscopy analysis. The coupling of morphological and structural investigations suggests that the modulation of the PCD surface chemistry enhances the bioactivity of the produced materials, allowing for the formation of continuous C-HA coatings with needle-like texture and chemical composition typical of those of the bone mineral. Specifically, after 20 days of immersion in SBF the calculated carbonate weight percent and the Ca/P ratio are 5.5% and 2.1, respectively. Bone-substitute materials are essential in dental implantology. We prepared collagen (Col)/hydroxyapatite (Hap)/acidic gelatin (AG)/basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) constructs with enhanced bone-forming capability. The Col/Hap apatite composites were prepared by immersing Col sponges alternately in calcium and phosphate ion solutions five times, for 20 and 60 min, respectively. Then, the sponges were heated to 56 °C for 48 h. Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses showed that the Col/Hap composites contained poorly crystalline Hap precipitates on the Col matrix. Col/Hap composite granules were infiltrated by AG, freeze-dried, and immersed in b-FGF solution. The wet quaternary constructs were implanted in rat cranial bone defects for 8 weeks, followed by soft X-ray measurements and histological analysis. Animal studies have shown that the constructs moderately increase bone formation in cranial bone defects. We found that an alternate immersion time of 20 min led to the greatest bone formation (p < 0.05). Constructs placed inside defects slightly extend the preexisting bone from the defect edges and lead to the formation of small island-like bones inside the defect, followed by disappearance of the constructs. Abstract: Hydrous ferric oxide (here termed ‘ochre’) sludge, an abundant waste product produced from the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), was used in this study for the removal of phosphorus (in the form of phosphate ions) from contaminated waters. The phosphorus uptake capacities of both raw and pelletized AMD solids were compared using batch and column tests. Addition of a cement binder to the AMD solids during pellet production led to significantly increased P-loading of the resultant solids compared to the raw sludge. Additionally, the pellets were found to continue to remove P in tests up to 7d in duration whereas the unbound AMD sludge appeared to approach equilibrium with phosphate solution after approximately 60min of contact time. In line with previous studies P uptake by the AMD solids was found to be primarily via adsorption. By contrast calcium phosphate precipitation was found to be the dominant removal mechanism for the cement-bound ochre pellets with a relatively small proportion of removal attributable to the AMD solids. SEM–EDX analysis of the surface of used pellets showed a Ca:P molar ratio close to that of hydroxyapatite (HAP). Continuous column tests on these pellets showed a rapid decrease in P removal capacity by the pellets over time, attributable to the formation of a passivating HAP surface layer. This study introduced an experimental bioactive glass (BG) with a lower Na2O content than conventional BG 45S5 (10.5 wt% vs. 24.5 wt%), additionally containing CaF2 (12 wt%) and a network connectivity similar to that of BG 45S5. A series of experimental composites functionalized with 5–40 wt% of the novel BG was prepared and compared to a corresponding series of experimental composites functionalized with 5–40 wt% of BG 45S5. Commercial acid-neutralizing materials (alkasite, giomer, and glass ionomer) were used as references. The capabilities of the materials to neutralize hydrochloric acid (pH = 2.6) and lactic acid (pH = 4.5) were evaluated by real-time pH measurements over 1 h. The degree of conversion and precipitation of calcium phosphate were also investigated. Data were analyzed using one-way and Welch ANOVA at an overall level of significance of 0.05. The acid-neutralizing potential of the experimental BG incorporated into resin composites was generally comparable to that of BG 45S5, and better than that of a giomer and glass ionomer. Fluorine was identified in the precipitate that developed on the composites functionalized with the experimental BG, suggesting a capability of forming fluorapatite. Unlike the 45S5 composition, the experimental BG did not impair the degree of conversion of resin composites. The novel BG filler is therefore an interesting candidate for future investigations of caries-preventive resin composites, and their potential clinical applicability for restorative, preventive, and orthodontic purposes.
