Rugulopteryx okamurae (RO) is a species of brown seaweed that has invaded several shorelines worldwide, including the Spanish Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar coasts, causing serious environmental and economic problems. This work aimed to characterize the bioactive composition of RO. A high content of carbohydrates (58.7 ± 2.6 wt%), fats (17.1 ± 0.4 wt%), and ashes (14.3 ± 0.2 wt%) were found, together with lower protein content (5.5 ± 1.8 wt%). Holocellulose was the most abundant polysaccharide fraction (49.2 ± 1.3 wt%), showing 43.4 ± 2.0 wt% of cellulose and 5.8 ± 0.7 wt% of hemicellulose, followed by lignin (18.9 ± 2.5 wt%). The monosaccharides composition showed a high level of glucose (13.2 ± 1 wt%) and glucuronic acid (9.3 ± 0.5 wt%). RO contained high levels of essential nutrients (Ca, K, Na, S, Mg), trace minerals (Mn, Mo, Se, and Cu), and some toxic heavy metals (Ni, Cd, As). The main fatty acid present in RO was palmitic acid (C16:0, 30.8 ± 3.0 mg/100 g), followed by myristic acid (C14:0, 19.3 ± 2.4 mg/100 g) and eicosatetraenoic acid (C20:4, 19.2 ± 1.3 mg/100 g). The extract obtained by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) presented significant contents of polyphenols (2.7 ± 0.2 mg GAE/g) and antioxidant activity (3.0 ± 0.4 mg TE/g DPPH, 4.5 ± 0.3 mg TE/g ABTS, 4.7 ± 0.3 mg TE/g FRAP). Six main polyphenols were identified by HPLC-MS/MS, showing higher contents of gallic acid (20.7 ± 1.5 mg/g) and chlorogenic acid (9.7 ± 0.5 mg/g). Agar is a hydrophilic biopolymer extracted from red seaweed. This phycocolloid consists of two components: agarose and agaropectin. In the present work, agar extracted from the invasive red seaweed Agarophyton vermiculophyllum was characterized using physical, chemical, and spectroscopic analyses to investigate the effect of alkaline pretreatment on agar properties. Two extraction conditions, native and alkali-pretreated agars, were comparatively studied. The native yield (28.4 ± 0.9%) was higher than that of the alkaline-pretreated agar (20.4 ± 0.8%). The alkali-pretreated agar showed higher gel strength (763.8 ± 57.0g cm−2), gelling (36.5 ± 0.9 °C), and melting (83.2 ± 0.6 °C) temperatures and increased 3,6-anhydrogalactose (26.2 ± 1.9%) and decreased sulfate contents (6.2 ± 0.8%) compared with native agar (gel strength: 204.8 ± 17.10g cm−2, gelling temperature: 29.5 ± 0.9 °C, melting temperature: 73.4 ± 0.7 °C, 3,6-AG content: 13.8 ± 0.7%, sulfate content: 10.5 ± 0.5%). The alkaline pretreatment improved the agar's gelling properties and significantly influenced its chemical properties. In view of the obtained results, A. vermiculophyllum might potentially be thought of as a viable source for the agar industry in Morocco, serving as a local source of agar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The invasive green algae Caulerpa taxifolia (M. Vahl) C. Agardh, 1817 and Caulerpa cylindracea Sonder, 1845 are widely diffused in the Mediterranean Sea, where they compete for space with the endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile, 1813, a keystone species in Mediterranean marine biodiversity. The present study aims to explore the possible effects of bioactive metabolites from the invasive algae on the seagrass, which may imply an allelopathic action. In particular, the study focuses on the effects of the algal alkaloid caulerpin and the sesquiterpene caulerpenyne. Changes in leaf growth, chlorophyll content, and leaf protein expression of P. oceanica genets under treatments were evaluated after 28 days of cultivation in mesocosms. Caulerpenyne strongly inhibited the growth of adult leaves and the formation of new ones, while inducing the elongation of the intermediate leaves and increased total chlorophyll content; on the contrary, caulerpin did not significantly influence leaf growth and the formation of new ones. A total of 107 differentially accumulated proteins common to the two treatments were also identified using the proteomic approach. Both molecules induced cells to maintain homeostasis, enhancing the amino acid metabolism or fatty acid biosynthesis. Despite these disruptions, P. oceanica demonstrated a more efficient response to stress induced by caulerpin, stimulating the biosynthesis of essential amino acids to maintain cellular homeostasis and mitigate damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Overall, obtained results supports the possible role of caulerpenyne, and not caulerpin, as an effector in allelopathic interactions among invasive Caulerpa species and P. oceanica in the Mediterranean. Asparagopsis armata Harvey is a red alga native from the southern hemisphere and then introduced in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, including the Azores Archipelago, where it is considered an invasive alga. Some studies show that the extracts exhibit antimicrobial and antifouling activities, and it is incorporated in some commercialized cosmetic products. (e.g., Ysaline®). However, knowledge of this species chemical composition is scarce. The GC-MS and UHPLC-MS profiles of both the nonpolar and polar extracts were established to contribute to this problem solution. According to the results, A. armata is rich in a great structural variety of halogenated lipophilic and aromatic compounds, some of them identified here for the first time. In the lipophilic extract, 25 compounds are identified, being the halogenated compounds and fatty acids, the two major compound families, corresponding to 54.8% and 35.7% of identified compounds (224 and 147 mg/100 g of dry algae, respectively). The 1,4-dibromobuten-1-ol and the palmitic acid are the two most abundant identified compounds (155 and 83.4 mg/100 g of dry algae, respectively). The polar extract demonstrated the richness of this species in brominated phenolics, from which the cinnamic acid derivatives are predominant. The results obtained herein open new perspectives for valuing the A. armata as a source of halogenated compounds and fatty acids, consequently improving its biotechnological and economic potential. The brown macroalgae of the species Rugulopteryx okamurae has reached European waters and the Strait of Gibraltar as an invasive species. The proliferation and colonization of the species in subtidal and intertidal zones of these regions imposes significant threats to local ecosystems and additionally represents a significant socioeconomic burden related to the large amounts of biomass accumulated as waste. As a way to minimize the effects caused by the accumulation of algae biomass, investigations have been made to employ this biomass as a raw material in value-added products or technologies. The present review explores the potential uses of R. okamurae, focusing on its impact for biogas production, composting, bioplastic and pharmaceutical purposes, with potential anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and α-glucosity inhibitory activities being highlighted. Overall, this species appears to present many attributes, with remarkable potential for uses in several fields of research and in various industries.

The invasive macroalga Grateloupia turuturu is known to contain a diversity of bioactive compounds with different potentialities. Among them are compounds with relevant bioactivities for cosmetics. Considering this, this study aimed to screen bioactivities with cosmeceutical potential, namely, antioxidant, UV absorbance, anti-enzymatic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as photoprotection potential. Extractions with higher concentrations of ethanol resulted in extracts with higher antioxidant activities, while for the anti-enzymatic activity, high inhibition percentages were obtained for elastase and hyaluronidase with almost all extracts. Regarding the antimicrobial activity, all extracts showed to be active against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans. Extracts produced with higher percentages of ethanol were more effective against E. coli and with lower percentages against the other two microorganisms. Several concentrations of each extract were found to be safe for fibroblasts, but no photoprotection capacity was observed. However, one of the aqueous extracts was responsible for reducing around 40% of the nitric oxide production on macrophages, showing its anti-inflammatory potential. Featured Application: To develop industry-friendly extraction methodologies to obtain bioactive extracts of Grateloupia turuturu for the cosmeceutical industry.Grateloupia turuturu is an invasive macroalga on the Iberian coast, known to produce bioactive compounds with different cosmeceutical bioactivities, namely UV shielding and antioxidants. The goal of this study was to optimize the extraction procedure of main bioactivities of this species with cosmetic potential, using Response Surface Methodology. Two Box–Behnken designs were used to evaluate the effect of ethanol concentration (0–50%), liquid-solid ratio, time, pH, and temperature on yield, UV absorbance, and antioxidant activity. Both optimizations showed a similar trend: aqueous extracts have higher yields and extracts performed with ethanol as part of the solvent have higher activities concerning UV absorbance and antioxidant activity. For all the extracts an absorption peak between 320 and 340 nm was observed. This data now allows further studies by narrowing the extracts worthful of characterization. The development of industry-friendly extraction methods allows the valorization of this invasive species, contributing for the potential creation of natural and eco-friendly products by the cosmetic industry while contributing to the restoration of affected environments. We report the occurrence of the brown seaweed Sargassum filicinum Harvey in southern California. Sargassum filicinum is native to Japan and Korea. It is monoecious, a trait that increases its chance of establishment. In October 2003, Sargassum filicinum was collected in Long Beach Harbor. In April 2006, we discovered three populations of this species on the leeward west end of Santa Catalina Island. Many of the individuals were large, reproductive and senescent; a few were small, young but precociously reproductive. We compared the sequences of the mitochondrial cox3 gene for 6 individuals from the 3 sites at Catalina with 3 samples from 3 sites in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan region. The 9 sequences (469 bp in length) were identical. Sargassum filicinum may have been introduced through shipping to Long Beach; it may have spread to Catalina via pleasure boats from the mainland.

The article discusses a study which investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of methionine-derived secondary metabolite dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) content in invasive seaweed Codium fragile off the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. The study observed the highest level of DMSP in C. fragile in boreal spring and lowest in fall and negatively related to seawater temperature. It was also found that DMSP content in the seaweed increases with light intensity, exposure to sea urchin grazing, and decreasing temperature.
