Utilizing reversible lattice oxygen redox (OR) in battery electrodes is an essential strategy to overcome the capacity limitation set by conventional transition metal redox. However, lattice OR reactions are often accompanied with irreversible oxygen oxidation, leading to local structural transformations and voltage/capacity fading. Herein, it is proposed that the reversibility of lattice OR can be remarkably improved through modulating transition metal-oxygen covalency for layered electrode of Na-ion batteries. By developing a novel layered P2-Na0.6 Mg0.15 Mn0.7 Cu0.15 O2 electrode, it is demonstrated that the highly electronegative Cu dopants can improve the lattice OR reversibility to 95% compared to 73% for Cu-free counterpart, as directly quantified through high-efficiency mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. Crucially, the large energetic overlap between Cu 3d and O 2p states dictates the rigidity of oxygen framework, which effectively mitigates the structural distortion of local oxygen environment upon (de)sodiation and leads to the enhanced lattice OR reversibility. The electrode also exhibits a completely solid-solution reaction with an ultralow volume change of only 0.45% and a reversible metal migration upon cycling, which together ensure the improved electrochemical performance. These results emphasize the critical role of transition metal-oxygen covalency for enhancing the reversibility of lattice OR toward high-capacity electrodes employing OR chemistry.

Stable lattice oxygen redox (l-OR) is the key enabler for achieving attainable high energy density in Li-rich layered oxide cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. However, the unique local structure response to oxygen redox in these materials, resulting in energy inefficiency and hysteresis, still remains elusive, preventing their potential applications. By combining the state-of-the-art neutron pair distribution function with crystal orbital overlap analysis, we directly observe the distinct local structure adaption originated from the potential O–O chemical bonds. The structure adaptability is optimized based on the nature of multi transition metals in our model compound Li1.2Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13O2, which accommodates the oxygen redox and at the same time preserves the global layered structure. These findings not only advance the understanding of l-OR, but also provide new perspectives in the rational design of high-energy-density cathode materials with reversible and stable l-OR.

Lattice-oxygen redox (l-OR) has become an essential companion to the traditional transition-metal (TM) redox charge compensation to achieve high capacity in Li-rich cathode oxides. However, the understanding of l-OR chemistry remains elusive, and a critical question is the structural effect on the stability of l-OR reactions. Herein, the coupling between l-OR and structure dimensionality is studied. We reveal that the evolution of the oxygen-lattice structure upon l-OR in Li-rich TM oxides which have a three-dimensional (3D)-disordered cation framework is relatively stable, which is in direct contrast to the clearly distorted oxygen-lattice framework in Li-rich oxides which have a two-dimensional (2D)/3D-ordered cation structure. Our results highlight the role of structure dimensionality in stabilizing the oxygen lattice in reversible l-OR, which broadens the horizon for designing high-energy-density Li-rich cathode oxides with stable l-OR chemistry.

[Display omitted] Benefiting from the extra contribution of O redox, Co-free Li-rich layered oxides (LRNMO) can satisfy the requirement of high specific capacities. However, during the high-voltage charging process, lattice oxygen being oxidized to O− or O 2 leads to a gradual transition of the structure from layered to spinel phase, capacity and voltage decline, hindering the practical application of LRNMO in the lithium-ion battery. Here, a surface modification strategy of Li 1.2 Ni 0.32 Mn 0.48 O 2-δ doped with Ta5+ ions is proposed, in which the Ta5+ ions occupy the lithium sites of the lattice structure on the surface layer of LRNMO and form a Ta 2 O 5 coating layer. The modified electrode exhibits excellent rate performance and cycling stability, with 94.9% and 85.5% capacity retention rate and voltage retention rate, respectively, after 200 cycles at 1C. Moreover, the initial coulomb efficiency and ionic conductivity of the modified electrode are also apparently enhanced. Simultaneously, the decreased Li/Ni mixing degree of the modified electrode reflects the improvement of the structural stability. Therefore, the modification strategy through strong metal–oxygen bonding to integrate the surface structure to regulate the oxygen activity provides a new direction for the design of high energy density Co-free Li-rich cathode materials.
