Abstract

Finding interpretable biomechanical models can provide insight into the functionality of organs with regard to physiology and disease. However, identifying broadly applicable dynamical models for in vivo tissue remains challenging. In this proof of concept study we propose a reconstruction framework for data-driven discovery of dynamical models from experimentally obtained undersampled MRI spectral data. The method makes use of the previously developed spectro-dynamic framework which allows for reconstruction of displacement fields at high spatial and temporal resolution required for model identification. The proposed framework combines this method with data-driven discovery of interpretable models using Sparse Identification of Non-linear Dynamics (SINDy). The design of the reconstruction algorithm is such that a symbiotic relation between the reconstruction of the displacement fields and the model identification is created. Our method does not rely on periodicity of the motion. It is successfully validated using spectral data of a dynamic phantom gathered on a clinical MRI scanner. The dynamic phantom is programmed to perform motion adhering to 5 different (non-linear) ordinary differential equations. The proposed framework performed better than a 2-step approach where the displacement fields were first reconstructed from the undersampled data without any information on the model, followed by data-driven discovery of the model using the reconstructed displacement fields. 2. Understanding Field-Free Single-Shot Laser-Induced Reversal of Exchange Bias

Abstract

Exchange bias is applied ubiquitously throughout the spintronics industry for pinning magnetic moment in an orientation robust against external magnetic field disturbances. Enabling efficient manipulation of the exchange-biased pinning direction is key to add or advance device functionality. Conventional methods for achieving this reorientation commonly require long heating times and assisting magnetic fields, thus limiting speed and versatility. Here, we demonstrate a field-free $180^\circ$ reorientation of perpendicular exchange bias in a thin film system integrating Co/Gd layers with IrMn. Single femtosecond laser pulses trigger a reversal of the pinning direction, while preserving the unidirectionality required for referencing. We formulate a theoretical microscopic framework involving a wide range of timescales that accurately reproduces the experimental outcomes. Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Chronic inflammation promotes cardiovascular risk in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) improve disease activity and cardiovascular disease outcomes. We explored whether bDMARDs influence the impact of disease activity and inflammatory markers on long-term cardiovascular risk in RA. METHODS: We studied 4370 participants without cardiovascular disease in a 10-country observational cohort of patients with RA. Endpoints were (1) major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) encompassing myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular death; and (2) any ischaemic cardiovascular events (iCVE) including MACE plus revascularisation, angina, transient ischaemic attack and peripheral arterial disease. RESULTS: Over 26 534 patient-years, 239 MACE and 362 iCVE occurred. The interaction between 28-joint Disease Activity Score with C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP) and bDMARD use was significant for MACE (p=0.017), suggesting the effect of DAS28-CRP on MACE risk differed among bDMARD users (n=515) and non-users (n=3855). DAS28-CRP (per unit increase) is associated with MACE risk in bDMARD non-users (HR 1.21 (95% CI 1.07 to 1.37)) but not users (HR 0.69 (95% CI 0.40 to 1.20)). The interaction between CRP (per log unit increase) and bDMARD use was also significant for MACE (p=0.011). CRP associated with MACE risk in bDMARD non-users (HR 1.16 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.30)), but not users (HR 0.65 (95% CI 0.36 to 1.17)). No interaction was observed between bDMARD use and DAS28-CRP (p=0.167) or CRP (p=0.237) for iCVE risk. CONCLUSIONS: RA activity and inflammatory markers associated with risk of MACE in bDMARD non-users but not users suggesting the possibility of biological-specific benefits locally on arterial wall independently of effects on systemic inflammation.

Abstract

Measuring the dynamics and mechanical properties of muscles and joints is important to understand the (patho)physiology of muscles. However, acquiring dynamic time-resolved MRI data is challenging. We have previously developed Spectro-Dynamic MRI which allows the characterization of dynamical systems at a high spatial and temporal resolution directly from k-space data. This work presents an extended Spectro-Dynamic MRI framework that reconstructs 1) time-resolved MR images, 2) time-resolved motion fields, 3) dynamical parameters, and 4) an activation force, at a temporal resolution of 11 ms. An iterative algorithm solves a minimization problem containing four terms: a motion model relating the motion to the fully-sampled k-space data, a dynamical model describing the expected type of dynamics, a data consistency term describing the undersampling pattern, and finally a regularization term for the activation force. We acquired MRI data using a dynamic motion phantom programmed to move like an actively driven linear elastic system, from which all dynamic variables could be accurately reconstructed, regardless of the sampling pattern. 9. Optimization of MR Fingerprinting for Free-Breathing Quantitative Abdominal Imaging

Abstract

In this work, we propose a free-breathing magnetic resonance fingerprinting method that can be used to obtain $B_1^+$-robust quantitative maps of the abdomen in a clinically acceptable time. A three-dimensional MR fingerprinting sequence with a radial stack-of-stars trajectory was implemented for quantitative abdominal imaging. The k-space acquisition ordering was adjusted to improve motion-robustness. The flip angle pattern was optimized using the Cram\'er-Rao Lower Bound, and the encoding efficiency of sequences with 300, 600, 900, and 1800 flip angles was evaluated. To validate the sequence, a movable multicompartment phantom was developed. Reference multiparametric maps were acquired under stationary conditions using a previously validated MRF method. Periodic motion of the phantom was used to investigate the motion-robustness of the proposed sequence. The best performing sequence length (600 flip angles) was used to image the abdomen during a free-breathing volunteer scan. When using a series of 600 or more flip angles, the estimated $T_1$ values in the stationary phantom showed good agreement with the reference scan. Phantom experiments revealed that motion-related artefacts can appear in the quantitative maps, and confirmed that a motion-robust k-space ordering is essential in preventing these artefacts. The in vivo scan demonstrated that the proposed sequence can produce clean parameter maps while the subject breathes freely. Using this sequence, it is possible to generate $B_1^+$-robust quantitative maps of proton density, $T_1$, and $B_1^+$ under free-breathing conditions at a clinically usable resolution within 5 minutes., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 9 supplementary figures

Abstract

The objective was to examine the prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and its risk factors among patients with RA with diabetes mellitus (RA-DM) and patients with RA without diabetes mellitus (RAwoDM), and to evaluate lipid and blood pressure (BP) goal attainment in RA-DM and RAwoDM in primary and secondary prevention. The cohort was derived from the Survey of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis from 53 centres/19 countries/3 continents during 2014-2019. We evaluated the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among RA-DM and RAwoDM. The study population was divided into those with and without ASCVD, and within these groups we compared risk factors and CVD preventive treatment between RA-DM and RAwoDM. Abstract

BackgroundIn younger individuals, low absolute risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) may conceal an increased risk age and relative risk of CVD. Calculation of risk age is proposed as an adjuvant to absolute CVD risk estimation in European guidelines. We aimed to compare the discriminative ability of available risk age models in prediction of CVD in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Secondly, we also evaluated the performance of risk age models in subgroups based on RA disease characteristics.MethodsRA patients aged 30-70 years were included from an international consortium named A Trans-Atlantic Cardiovascular Consortium for Rheumatoid Arthritis (ATACC-RA). Prior CVD and diabetes mellitus were exclusion criteria. The discriminatory ability of specific risk age models was evaluated using c-statistics and their standard errors after calculating time until fatal or non-fatal CVD or last follow-up.ResultsA total of 1974 patients were included in the main analyses, and 144 events were observed during follow-up, the median follow-up being 5.0 years. The risk age models gave highly correlated results, demonstrating R2 values ranging from 0.87 to 0.97. However, risk age estimations differed > 5 years in 15-32% of patients. C-statistics ranged 0.68-0.72 with standard errors of approximately 0.03. Despite certain RA characteristics being associated with low c-indices, standard errors were high. Restricting analysis to European RA patients yielded similar results.ConclusionsThe cardiovascular risk age and vascular age models have comparable performance in predicting CVD in RA patients. The influence of RA disease characteristics on the predictive ability of these prediction models remains inconclusive.

Abstract

ObjectivesSmoking is a major risk factor for the development of both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and RA and may cause attenuated responses to anti-rheumatic treatments. Our aim was to compare disease activity, CVD risk factors and CVD event rates across smoking status in RA patients.MethodsDisease characteristics, CVD risk factors and relevant medications were recorded in RA patients without prior CVD from 10 countries (Norway, UK, Netherlands, USA, Sweden, Greece, South Africa, Spain, Canada and Mexico). Information on CVD events was collected. Adjusted analysis of variance, logistic regression and Cox models were applied to compare RA disease activity (DAS28), CVD risk factors and event rates across categories of smoking status.ResultsOf the 3311 RA patients (1012 former, 887 current and 1412 never smokers), 235 experienced CVD events during a median follow-up of 3.5 years (interquartile range 2.5-6.1). Abstract

The introduction of lung cancer screening programs will produce an unprecedented amount of chest CT scans in the near future, which radiologists will have to read in order to decide on a patient follow-up strategy. According to the current guidelines, the workup of screen-detected nodules strongly relies on nodule size and nodule type. In this paper, we present a deep learning system based on multi-stream multi-scale convolutional networks, which automatically classifies all nodule types relevant for nodule workup. The system processes raw CT data containing a nodule without the need for any additional information such as nodule segmentation or nodule size and learns a representation of 3D data by analyzing an arbitrary number of 2D views of a given nodule. The deep learning system was trained with data from the Italian MILD screening trial and validated on an independent set of data from the Danish DLCST screening trial. We analyze the advantage of processing nodules at multiple scales with a multi-stream convolutional network architecture, and we show that the proposed deep learning system achieves performance at classifying nodule type that surpasses the one of classical machine learning approaches and is within the inter-observer variability among four experienced human observers., Comment: Published on Scientific Reports

Abstract

ObjectivesPatients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have an excess risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to assess the impact of CVD risk factors, including potential sex differences, and RA-specific variables on CVD outcome in a large, international cohort of patients with RA.MethodsIn 13 rheumatology centres, data on CVD risk factors and RA characteristics were collected at baseline. CVD outcomes (myocardial infarction, angina, revascularisation, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and CVD death) were collected using standardised definitions.Results5638 patients with RA and no prior CVD were included (mean age: 55.3 (SD: 14.0) years, 76% women). During mean follow-up of 5.8 (SD: 4.4) years, 148 men and 241 women developed a CVD event (10-year cumulative incidence 20.9% and 11.1%, respectively). Abstract

ObjectivesCardiovascular disease (CVD) risk calculators developed for the general population do not accurately predict CVD events in patients with RA. We sought to externally validate risk calculators recommended for use in patients with RA including the EULAR 1.5 multiplier, the Expanded Cardiovascular Risk Prediction Score for RA (ERS-RA) and QRISK2.MethodsSeven RA cohorts from UK, Norway, Netherlands, USA, South Africa, Canada and Mexico were combined. Data on baseline CVD risk factors, RA characteristics and CVD outcomes (including myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke and cardiovascular death) were collected using standardized definitions. Performance of QRISK2, EULAR multiplier and ERS-RA was compared with other risk calculators [American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA), Framingham Adult Treatment Panel III Framingham risk score-Adult Treatment Panel (FRS-ATP) and Reynolds Risk Score] using c-statistics and net reclassification index.ResultsAmong 1796 RA patients without prior CVD [mean ( s . d .) age: 54.0 (14.0) years, 74% female], 100 developed CVD events during a mean follow-up of 6.9 years (12430 person-years). Estimated CVD risk by ERS-RA [mean ( s . d .) 8.8% (9.8%)] was comparable to FRS-ATP [mean ( s . d .) 9.1% (8.3%)] and Reynolds [mean ( s . d .) 9.2% (12.2%)], but lower than ACC/AHA [mean ( s . d .) 9.8% (12.1%)]. QRISK2 substantially overestimated risk [mean ( s . d .) 15.5% (13.9%)]. Discrimination was not improved for ERS-RA (c-statistic = 0.69), QRISK2 or EULAR multiplier applied to ACC/AHA compared with ACC/AHA (c-statistic = 0.72 for all) or for FRS-ATP (c-statistic = 0.75). The net reclassification index for ERS-RA was low (-0.8% vs ACC/AHA and 2.3% vs FRS-ATP).ConclusionThe QRISK2, EULAR multiplier and ERS-RA algorithms did not predict CVD risk more accurately in patients with RA than CVD risk calculators developed for the general population.

22. Surface Integrity of 316L Steel Machined Sequentially by Wire EDM and Wire ECM.

Abstract

This research investigates the surface properties of 316L stainless steel machined by combining two wire electro manufacturing processes on a single machining platform, i.e., wire EDM roughing and wire ECM finishing. While the former is well known in industry, the latter has not yet seen much industrial use but can improve the surface integrity since it does not generate heat to achieve material removal, avoiding several EDM (semi)finishing passes at reduced sparking energies. With applications in the medical, energy, and aerospace fields, this research focuses on characterizing the machined surfaces with respect to the surface defects and the chemical composition. The studied surface properties include the (sub)surface morphology with respect to micro cracks and heat related damage introduced by wire EDM, and the mechanism of their removal by wire ECM finishing. The chemical composition of the surface is furthermore evaluated to characterize the contamination of the workpiece material by the tool electrode material. The manufactured samples are studied using a profilometer to quantify material removal and the resulting roughness. Metallographic analysis is carried out by optical microscopy and SEM with EDX. Abstract

A major challenge in human genetics is to devise a systematic strategy to integrate disease-associated variants with diverse genomic and biological data sets to provide insight into disease pathogenesis and guide drug discovery for complex traits such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Here we performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis in a total of >100,000 subjects of European and Asian ancestries (29,880 RA cases and 73,758 controls), by evaluating ∼10 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms. We discovered 42 novel RA risk loci at a genome-wide level of significance, bringing the total to 101 (refs 2 - 4). We devised an in silico pipeline using established bioinformatics methods based on functional annotation, cis-acting expression quantitative trait loci and pathway analyses--as well as novel methods based on genetic overlap with human primary immunodeficiency, haematological cancer somatic mutations and knockout mouse phenotypes--to identify 98 biological candidate genes at these 101 risk loci. We demonstrate that these genes are the targets of approved therapies for RA, and further suggest that drugs approved for other indications may be repurposed for the treatment of RA. Together, this comprehensive genetic study sheds light on fundamental genes, pathways and cell types that contribute to RA pathogenesis, and provides empirical evidence that the genetics of RA can provide important information for drug discovery.

BackgroundTreatment strategies blocking tumour necrosis factor (anti-TNF) have proven very successful in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine, through a genome-wide association study (GWAS), the genetic components contributing to different clinical sub-phenotypes of systemic sclerosis (SSc). We considered limited (lcSSc) and diffuse (dcSSc) cutaneous involvement, and the relationships with presence of the SSc-specific auto-antibodies, anti-centromere (ACA), and anti-topoisomerase I (ATA). Four GWAS cohorts, comprising 2,296 SSc patients and 5,171 healthy controls, were meta-analyzed looking for associations in the selected subgroups. Eighteen polymorphisms were further tested in nine independent cohorts comprising an additional 3,175 SSc patients and 4,971 controls. Conditional analysis for associated SNPs in the HLA region was performed to explore their independent association in antibody subgroups. Overall analysis showed that non-HLA polymorphism rs11642873 in IRF8 gene to be associated at GWAS level with lcSSc (P = 2.32×10(-12), OR = 0.75). Also, rs12540874 in GRB10 gene (P = 1.27 × 10(-6), OR = 1.15) and rs11047102 in SOX5 gene (P = 1.39×10(-7), OR = 1.36) showed a suggestive association with lcSSc and ACA subgroups respectively. In the HLA region, we observed highly associated allelic combinations in the HLA-DQB1 locus with ACA (P = 1.79×10(-61), OR = 2.48), in the HLA-DPA1/B1 loci with ATA (P = 4.57×10(-76), OR = 8.84), and in NOTCH4 with ACA P = 8.84×10(-21), OR = 0.55) and ATA (P = 1.14×10(-8), OR = 0.54). We have identified three new non-HLA genes (IRF8, GRB10, and SOX5) associated with SSc clinical and auto-antibody subgroups. Within the HLA region, HLA-DQB1, HLA-DPA1/B1, and NOTCH4 associations with SSc are likely confined to specific auto-antibodies. These data emphasize the differential genetic components of subphenotypes of SSc.

Abstract

Objective: To develop evidence- based European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) points to consider (PtCs) for the management of difficult- to- treat rheumatoid arthritis (D2T RA). Methods: An EULAR Task Force was established comprising 34 individuals: 26 rheumatologists, patient partners and rheumatology experienced health professionals. Two systematic literature reviews addressed clinical questions around diagnostic challenges, and pharmacological and non- pharmacological therapeutic strategies in D2T RA. PtCs were formulated based on the identified evidence and expert opinion. Strength of recommendations (SoR, scale A–D: A typically consistent level 1 studies and D level 5 evidence or inconsistent studies) and level of agreement (LoA, scale 0–10: 0 completely disagree and 10 completely agree) of the PtCs were determined by the Task Force members. Results: Two overarching principles and 11 PtCs were defined concerning diagnostic confirmation of RA, evaluation of inflammatory disease activity, pharmacological and non- pharmacological interventions, treatment adherence, functional disability, pain, fatigue, goal setting and self- efficacy and the impact of comorbidities. The SoR varied from level C to level D. The mean LoA with the overarching principles and PtCs was generally high (8.4–9.6). Conclusions: These PtCs for D2T RA can serve as a clinical roadmap to support healthcare professionals and patients to deliver holistic management and more personalised pharmacological and non- pharmacological therapeutic strategies. 37. Enhancing the impact of literature reviews: guidelines for making meaningful contributions

Abstract

Purpose: Most papers and books on conducting literature reviews primarily emphasize achieving technical quality, ensuring reproducibility and validating results. Notwithstanding the need for technical excellence, there is also a need for relevance. The purpose of this study is to address that need and offer practical and constructive suggestions for enhancing the meaningful contribution of a literature review, thereby increasing its impact and relevance for publication. Design/methodology/approach: In this conceptual paper, the authors explore strategies to enhance the relevance and contribution of a literature review. By clarifying the needs of diverse audiences and the principles of generating new insights, the authors provide a broad range of options without being prescriptive. Recognizing that every literature review is unique, this paper contrasts various approaches to offer flexible and adaptable guidance. Findings: Literature reviews can be enjoyable to read and write, offering a wide range of substantial contributions that meet the expectations of readers and journal editors. This paper offers practical suggestions for prospective authors to make their reviews more relevant, invaluable and engaging, and summarizes these suggestions in a comprehensive checklist. Research limitations/implications: The paper is not exhaustive but rather complements prevalent literature review methodologies. Originality/value: Existing literature offers limited guidance on enhancing a review’s contribution to science, academic inquiry and society. This paper fills that gap by providing both academic considerations and practical recommendations, drawing on the author’s extensive experience in reviewing and conducting literature reviews. Aim The objective was to examine the prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and its risk factors among patients with RA with diabetes mellitus (RA-DM) and patients with RA without diabetes mellitus (RAwoDM), and to evaluate lipid and blood pressure (BP) goal attainment in RA-DM and RAwoDM in primary and secondary prevention. Methods The cohort was derived from the Survey of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis from 53 centres/19 countries/3 continents during 2014-2019. We evaluated the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among RA-DM and RAwoDM. The study population was divided into those with and without ASCVD, and within these groups we compared risk factors and CVD preventive treatment between RA-DM and RAwoDM. Abstract

BackgroundDespite treatment according to the current management recommendations, a significant proportion of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remain symptomatic. These patients can be considered to have ‘difficult-to-treat RA’. However, uniform terminology and an appropriate definition are lacking.ObjectiveThe Task Force in charge of the “Development of EULAR recommendations for the comprehensive management of difficult-to-treat rheumatoid arthritis” aims to create recommendations for this underserved patient group. Herein, we present the definition of difficult-to-treat RA, as the first step.MethodsThe Steering Committee drafted a definition with suggested terminology based on an international survey among rheumatologists. This was discussed and amended by the Task Force, including rheumatologists, nurses, health professionals and patients, at a face-to-face meeting until sufficient agreement was reached (assessed through voting).ResultsThe following three criteria were agreed by all Task Force members as mandatory elements of the definition of difficult-to-treat RA: (1) Treatment according to European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) recommendation and failure of ≥2 biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs)/targeted synthetic DMARDs (with different mechanisms of action) after failing conventional synthetic DMARD therapy (unless contraindicated); (2) presence of at least one of the following: at least moderate disease activity; signs and/or symptoms suggestive of active disease; inability to taper glucocorticoid treatment; rapid radiographic progression; RA symptoms that are causing a reduction in quality of life; and (3) the management of signs and/or symptoms is perceived as problematic by the rheumatologist and/or the patient.ConclusionsThe proposed EULAR definition for difficult-to-treat RA can be used in clinical practice, clinical trials and can form a basis for future research.

The Reliable Change Index (RCI) determines whether the magnitude of change observed in an individual can be attributed to true change. This study aimed to examine the RCI as a novel approach to estimating osteoarthritis progression. Abstract

BackgroundBirt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is a rare genetic syndrome caused by pathogenic or likely pathogenic germline variants in the FLCNgene. Patients with BHD syndrome have an increased risk of fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts, pneumothorax and renal cell carcinoma. There is debate regarding whether colonic polyps should be added to the criteria. Previous risk estimates have mostly been based on small clinical case series.MethodsA comprehensive review was conducted to identify studies that had recruited families carrying pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in FLCN. Pedigree data were requested from these studies and pooled. Segregation analysis was used to estimate the cumulative risk of each manifestation for carriers of FLCNpathogenic variants.ResultsOur final dataset contained 204 families that were informative for at least one manifestation of BHD (67 families informative for skin manifestations, 63 for lung, 88 for renal carcinoma and 29 for polyps). By age 70 years, male carriers of the FLCNvariant have an estimated 19% (95% CI 12% to 31%) risk of renal tumours, 87% (95% CI 80% to 92%) of lung involvement and 87% (95% CI 78% to 93%) of skin lesions, while female carriers had an estimated 21% (95% CI 13% to 32%) risk of renal tumours, 82% (95% CI 73% to 88%) of lung involvement and 78% (95% CI 67% to 85%) of skin lesions. The cumulative risk of colonic polyps by age 70 years old was 21% (95% CI 8% to 45%) for male carriers and 32% (95% CI 16% to 53%) for female carriers.ConclusionsThese updated penetrance estimates, based on a large number of families, are important for the genetic counselling and clinical management of BHD syndrome.

Abstract

Thermal processes such as wire electro discharge machining (wire EDM) have an intrinsic heat affected zone (HAZ) and recast layer due to their thermal removal mechanisms. This layer is adverse to the fatigue life characteristics of the manufactured parts, and has to be removed by finishing operations. Wire electrochemical machining (wire ECM) is proposed as a finishing operation, as it can dissolve conductive materials without damaging the machined surface, and is similar in mechanical operation as wire EDM. An important drawback of electrochemical machining is the low accuracy when removing large amounts of materials in one pass, which is addressed by only machining a shallow depth by ECM after roughing by EDM (i.e., finishing allowance of 15 – 70 µm, the HAZ thickness). This paper presents an experimental study of electrochemical finishing 316L stainless steel wire EDM'ed parts. To improve the machining efficiency and the accuracy of the finished parts by eliminating reclamping, the process is implemented on a wire EDM machine. The wire electrode used in EDM roughing is also used in ECM finishing and is retraced along the contour of the part with an offset to increase or decrease the interelectrode gap. The experiments presented in this paper aim to gain insight in the relationship between the process parameters of wire ECM and the resulting machined surface, with respect to the machining depth, material removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness. A number of process optimization strategies are investigated, considering parameters such as the feed rate and the number of passes. Experimental results show that wire based electrochemical machining is a viable process to finish wire EDM parts, achieving removal depths greater than 20 µm with a surface roughness below 1 µm Ra.
