Humans produce exhaled breath particles (EBPs) during various breath activities, such as normal breathing, coughing, talking, and sneezing. Airborne transmission risk exists when EBPs have attached pathogens. Until recently, few investigations had evaluated the size and concentration distributions of EBPs from mechanically ventilated patients with different ventilation mode settings. This study thus broke new ground by not only evaluating the size concentration distributions of EBPs in mechanically ventilated patients, but also investigating the relationship between EBP level and positive expiratory end airway pressure (PEEP), tidal volume, and pneumonia. This investigation recruited mechanically ventilated patients, with and without pneumonia, aged 20 years old and above, from the respiratory intensive care unit of a medical center. Concentration distributions of EBPs from mechanically ventilated patients were analyzed with an optical particle analyzer. This study finds that EBP concentrations from mechanically ventilated patients during normal breathing were in the range 0.47-2,554.04 particles/breath (0.001-4.644 particles/mL). EBP concentrations did not differ significantly between the volume control and pressure control modes of the ventilation settings in the mechanically ventilated patients. The patient EBPs were sized below 5 µm, and 80% of them ranged from 0.3 to 1.0 µm. The EBPs concentrations in patients with high PEEP (> 5 cmH₂O) clearly exceeded those in patients with low PEEP (≤ 5 cmH₂O). Additionally, a significant negative association existed between pneumonia duration and EBPs concentration. However, tidal volume was not related to EBPs concentration.

Ammonium and nitrate are major N-containing aerosol components. The deposition of N-containing aerosols has impacts on regional ecology and the biogeochemical cycle. In this study, aerosols in a rural cloud forest (Xitou in Taiwan) were studied using 15N and 18O isotope analysis to assess the sources and formation pathways of the local N-containing aerosols linking to a metropolitan. Aerosol samples of different size ranges were collected using a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) on a half-day basis in December 2018. The chemical functional groups were analyzed using a Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) technique, while the isotope analysis was performed using a gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometer (GC–IRMS). The average measured aerosol concentration (PM 10) was 0.98 (ranging from 0.15 to 3.31) and 0.25 (ranging from 0.00 to 1.51) µgm-3 for NH4+ and NO3- , respectively. In general, a higher concentration than nighttime was observed during the daytime by a factor of 1.5–6, likely due to the transportation of pollutants from upper-stream urban and industrial regions through the local sea breeze combined with valley wind. The presence of fog can further elevate the concentration by a factor of 2–3, resulting from the stronger inversion and lower boundary layer height. The higher NH4+ concentration in fine particles under foggy conditions corresponds to submicron-sized NO3- formation via aqueous-phase dissolution with NH4+ neutralization. Furthermore, the higher RH during fog events shifted the mass distribution of aerosol functional groups to a larger mode size. By comparing the δ15N value directly or through the analysis using a statistical isotope mixing model, MixSIAR, NH4+ probably originated from the industries, coal-fired power plants (CFPPs), or fertilizer plants, while NO3- might be contributed from the CFPP, industrial or urban sources. The overall δ18O of NO3- is + 72.66 ‰ ± 3.42 ‰, similar to that in other winter Asian studies, suggesting the major formation pathway via O3 oxidation (δ18O=+72.5 ‰ to 101.67 ‰). However, a lower δ18O (<+67 ‰) for particles less than 0.56 µm during foggy daytime suggests the local contribution via the peroxyl radical oxidation before partitioning into aerosol phase under foggy conditions. Overall, the δ15N and δ18O distribution profiles as a function of particle size in the studied rural forest site reveal the evolution of aerosol composition from remote coastal regions with chemical processes along the transport process, which can be further affected by weather conditions such as fog events. Aerosol variability is influenced by changes in emissions and atmospheric dynamics. The aim of this study is to identify the role of synoptic weather systems in affecting the aerosol variation over East Asia under future changes in atmospheric dynamics. First we investigate the influence of synoptic weather on aerosol optical depth (AOD) spatiotemporal variability using long-term observations from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). We demonstrate that the major synoptic weather patterns of each season are among the dominant factors that affect AOD variations. During spring and autumn, AOD variability is significantly influenced by dynamic transport under northeasterly (winter monsoon) or southwesterly (summer monsoon) conditions. In summer, the maximum anomaly of the AOD variability was associated with the occurrence of fronts and tropical cyclones near Taiwan. While in winter, cold surge was the major event controlling the AOD variability. As atmospheric dynamics are well connected with AOD interannual variability, the AOD predictability over East Asia is associated with the predictability of synoptic weather systems. We apply the high-resolution atmospheric model (HiRAM) to identify these weather systems in present climate and under future warming scenarios. Under future climate based on HiRAM, the occurrence of summer tropical cyclones decreases by 32%, and the autumn southwesterly pattern increases by 50%. Considering the frequency change in summer tropical cyclones and autumn southwestlies under future scenarios, this may lead to the accumulation of AOD over China during summer and autumn through dynamic transport. The results suggest that AOD variations in East Asia may change along with future changes in the large-scale circulation under global warming. • Transport under monsoons notably altered aerosol variability in spring and fall. • In summer, AOD variability was highly linked to fronts and cyclones near Taiwan. • Cold surge was the major event controlling the aerosol variability in winter. • The future change in event frequency may lead to aerosol accumulation over China. Abstract: Several studies have demonstrated that millions of people globally are potentially exposed to volcanic gases. Hydrogen sulfide is a typical gas in volcanic and geothermal areas. The gas is toxic at high concentrations that predominantly affects the nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. The WHO air quality guideline for hydrogen sulfide is 150μgm−3 (105ppb). The northwest part of Taipei is surrounded by sulfur-rich geothermal and hot springs. Active fumaroles and bubbling springs around the geothermal area emit acidic gases. In combination with automobile emissions, the pollution of acid aerosols is characteristic of the metropolis. This study considered sulfur-rich geothermal, suburban and downtown locations of this metropolis to evaluate geothermally emitted acid aerosol and H2S pollution. Acid aerosols were collected using a honeycomb denuder filter pack sampling system (HDS), and then analyzed by ion chromatography (IC). Results indicated that long-term geothermal emissions, automobile emissions and photochemical reactions have led to significant variations in air pollution among regions of metropolitan Taipei. The highest H2S concentration was 1705ppb in the geothermal area with low traffic density and the mean concentration was 404.06ppb, which was higher than WHO guideline and might cause eye irritation. The SO2 concentrations were relatively low (mean concentration was 3.9ppb) in this area. It may partially result from the chemical reduction reaction in the geothermal emission, which converted the SO2 gas into SO4 2− and H2S. Consequently, very high sulfate concentrations (mean concentration higher than 25.0μgm−3) were also observed in the area. The geothermal areas also emitted relatively high levels of aerosol acidity, Cl−, F−, PO4 3−, and N-containing aerosols. As a result, concentrations of HNO3, NO2 −, PO4 3−, and SO4 2− in metropolitan Taipei are significantly higher than those in other urban areas considered in other studies. These results provide evidence that geothermal emissions represent a significant source of acid aerosols in metropolitan Taipei. Therefore, in this metropolitan area, the combined health effects of air pollutants from automobiles and geothermal emissions should be particular concern. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Metropolitan Taipei, which is located in the subtropical area, is characterized by high population and automobile densities. For convenience, most primary schools are located near major roads. This study explores the exposure of acid aerosols for schoolchildren in areas in Taipei with different traffic densities. Acid aerosols were collected by using a honeycomb denuder filter pack sampling system (HDS). Experimental results indicated that the air pollutants were significantly correlated with traffic densities. The ambient air NO2, SO2, HNO3, NO3 −, SO4 2−, and aerosol acidity concentrations were 31.3 ppb, 4.7 ppb, 1.3 ppb, 1.9 μg m−3, 18.5 μg m−3, and 49.5 nmol m−3 in high traffic density areas, and 6.1 ppb, 1.8 ppb, 0.9 ppb, 0.7 μg m−3, 8.8 μg m−3 and 14.7 nmol m−3 in low traffic density areas. The exposure levels of acid aerosols for schoolchildren would be higher than the measurements because the sampling height was 5 m above the ground. The SO2 levels were low (0.13–8.03 ppb) in the metropolitan Taipei. However, the SO4 2− concentrations were relatively high, and might be attributed to natural emissions of sulfur-rich geothermal sources. The seasonal variations of acid aerosol concentrations were also observed. The high levels of acidic particles in spring time may be attributed to the Asian dust storm and low height of the mixture layer. We conclude that automobile contributed not only the primary pollutants but also the secondary acid aerosols through the photochemical reaction. Schoolchildren were exposed to twice the acid aerosol concentrations in high traffic density areas compared to those in low traffic density areas. The incidence of allergic rhinitis of schoolchildren in the high traffic density areas was the highest in spring time. Accompanied by high temperature variation and high levels of air pollution in spring, the health risk of schoolchildren had been observed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
