Working-class and rural white women and free and enslaved African American women left few material traces, making it difficult for scholars to document their experience of the Civil War. This three-part article uses the story of the Timothy O. Webster Papers, which is part of the Pearce Civil War Collection at Navarro College in Corsi-cana, Texas, to examine the possibilities and limitations of recovering women's experience of the war from military collections. The first part examines the practice of collecting Civil War documents, the history of the Pearce Civil War Collection, and the collection and preservation of the Webster letters. In the second part, I begin to reconstruct Harriet's story using letters from the Webster Papers. The final part returns to the archive to consider how archivists might aid scholars in recovering the story of Civil War-era women from military collections.

This chapter traces the desire of two African American writers, Richard Wright and Ann Petry, to move beyond the fictional charge of the African American novel and to capture the effects of a racialized capitalism. Wright’s articles for the New Masses and the Daily Worker (1937–1938) and 12 Million Black Voices (1945), and Petry’s The Street (1946) are historical examples that chronicle the narrative resistances to the destructive forces of this capitalism. Depicting the tension between journalism and literary realism, Wright and Petry epitomize the imbrications of fact and fiction that represent the periods in which they wrote. By doing so, they significantly contributed to the terms of realism/the realist novel with its emphasis on human agency and the need to change existing social orders.

In this article I examine the creation of neo-slave narratives, or fictional texts written in the 20th and 21st centuries, yet set during an imagined period of American slavery or indentured servitude. In these novels the authors, usually African-descended, depict slavery and/or plantation life, generally, to privilege the experiences of the slave. The process of actively writing against traditional plantation narratives of the 18th and 19th centuries can liberate slave histories and allows silenced actors to speak. However, in this paper, I argue that there is a danger of further marginalization when History is the platform for creative expression. I examine two novels whose authors employ the use of satire to discuss slave experience and by doing so, I explore how the images of Black slave and servant women can be either devalued or empowered depending on authorial representation and intent., En este artículo examino la creación de narrativas neo-esclavas, o textos de ficción escritos en los siglos 20 y 21, aunque establecidos durante un período imaginario de la esclavitud o servidumbre americana. En estas novelas los autores, normalmente los afro-descendientes, representan la esclavitud y/o la vida en la plantación, en general, para otorgar privilegio a las experiencias del esclavo. El proceso de escribir activamente contra las narrativas de las plantaciones tradicionales de los siglos 18 y 19 puede liberar historias de esclavitud y permitir hablar a actores silenciados. Sin embargo, en este trabajo, argumento que existe cierto peligro de una mayor marginación cuando la Historia es la plataforma para la expresión creativa. Differences in rates of diabetes-related lower extremity amputations represent one of the largest and most persistent health disparities found for African Americans and Hispanics compared with Whites in the United States. Since many minority patients receive care in underresourced settings, quality improvement (QI) initiatives in these settings may offer a targeted approach to improve diabetes outcomes in these patient populations. Health information technology (health IT) is widely viewed as an essential component of health care QI and may be useful in decreasing diabetes disparities in underresourced settings. This article reviews the effectiveness of health care interventions using health IT to improve diabetes process of care and intermediate diabetes outcomes in African American and Hispanic patients. Health IT interventions have addressed patient, provider, and system challenges in the provision of diabetes care but require further testing in minority patient populations to evaluate their effectiveness in improving diabetes outcomes and reducing diabetes-related complications.

We present an example of an innovative constructed response test format–a write-in/mark-in paper-and-pencil test–as an alternative to the traditional multiple-choice paper-and-pencil test, with the potential for reducing subgroup differences. We present subgroup differences data on these 2 paper-and-pencil test formats on an operational promotional exam in a sample of African American and White firefighters. The tests were designed to measure the same content domain. Using within-subjects data that compared the performance of 13 African American and 14 White fire captains, and between-subjects data that compared the performance of 21 African American and 49 White fire captains, several results were in the predicted direction such that subgroup differences were reduced on the constructed response test. However, these results did not reach statistical significance. Therefore, the study points to the need for additional research to further evaluate the promise of the constructed response test format.
