This article highlights the 5th International Criminological Congress of the International Society for Criminology to be held in Montreal, Quebec, from August 29 to September 3, 1965.

The fifty-sixth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) was held at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure in Montreal, Quebec on May 17 to 20, 2001. The conference theme was Making Connections. Some eight hundred public opinion researchers accepted the invitation to meet colleagues and friends and to participate in the interdisciplinary program. The special character of the annual conference clearly distinguishes it from other professional meetings. Despite steady growth in attendance over recent years, it is a relatively small conference. Its limited duration, its submission review process and its carefully variegated slate of paper session topics constrain the number of opportunities for being on the program. With the traditional meals and social events, the AAPOR conference presents a higher quality, more intimate and more interdisciplinary experience than can be found at many academic, governmental, or commercial meetings. The structure of the meeting limits, among other things, opportunities to attract new AAPOR members, the willingness of exhibitors and publishers to display their wares, the range of topics covered in the program and the conference revenue that AAPOR could employ for worthwhile purposes.

Does the apparatus of Committees, reports and a triennial Assembly justify the cost of participation by members, ultimately borne by contributors or taxpayers? The article reports about the congress of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The one hundred and thirty first congress was convened in Montreal, Quebec, from December 26 to 31, 1964. Papers were given at the Queen Elizabeth, Sheraton-Mt. Royal, Windsor, Laurentien, and Ritz Carlton hotels. Convention headquarters were at the Queen Elizabeth, which also held the AAAS Annual Exposition, which boasted a fine array of instruments and books, and the AAAS Science Theatre, in which a selection of the latest foreign and domestic scientific films were shown. On December 26, section K of the AAAS presented a symposium. On December 29 and 30, the symposium "Arctic and Subarctic Archeological and Ethnological Problems," was held. A highly stimulating program was offered by the symposium "Problems of Interdisciplinary Methodology in the Behavioral Sciences." The "Symposium on Ethnobotany of Some New World Cultures," offered papers dealing with various crops cultivated in different areas of North and South America.

The article discusses a research paper about the basic requirements for the testing of mental acuity with special reference to the intracranial pressure and volume relationships, presented before the 70th Annual Meeting of the American Association on Mental Deficiency in Montreal, Quebec on October 3, 1946. Several factors that directly influence the value of the mental response include the time of day, the relationship of the test to the amounts of food and fluid consumed and sleep. For patient preparation, the paper recommends several things to do 48 hours prior to mental testing.

This article examines the function of community-based organizations in engaging citizens in planning healthy built environments in urban neighbourhoods. Research on the 3-year Green, Active, Healthy Neighbourhoods (GAHN) initiative, spearheaded by a city-wide umbrella group and local organizations in four boroughs of Montreal found that in activating citizen participation, the role of organizations was significant in four dimensions: (i) mobilizing to generate awareness and interest; (ii) giving voice to problems and solutions; (iii) pooling citizens' and professionals' knowledge; and (iv) maintaining participation in implementation. Organizations involved in GAHN provided creative tools and processes for citizens' participation, which were valued by planners and local authorities, but collaborative participation was difficult beyond the exploratory and diagnostic dimensions. This study points to the challenges in sustaining collaboration and having influence. Organizations need to maintain pressure, conserve independence and renew linkages with citizens to shift urban planning practices from car-dominated to people-centred development. This article provides information on the program for the 1964 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology to be held from December 28 to 30, 1964 in Montreal, Quebec. Organized as a three-day conference, first day's program will be concerned with interdisciplinary programs of training and research in criminology; concluding with the annual business meeting. The second day's program will open with a continuation of papers on interdisciplinary training. The annual awards of the Society will be presented at a luncheon meeting to be held at the Helen de Champlain Restaurant located at historic and picturesque Saint Helen's Island. The role of the police in modern democratic society will be the theme of the Tuesday afternoon session. An evening program will be directed to a consideration of the abnormal sex offender. The second day's sessions will be concluded with a reception at the University of Montreal.

The article reports on the 86th annual meeting of American Educational Research Association (AERA). In Montreal, Quebec a historic city of bilingualism and diverse cuisines, members generated near-record attendance, representing colleges and universities, thinktanks, foundations, government agencies, and other organizations in 54 countries.
