Alternanthera philoxeroides and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix offer significant nutritional benefits. This study evaluates the proximate composition, amino acid profile, GC-MS analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and EDX, and color values of edible paper sheets (EPSs) derived from Alternanthera philoxeroides incorporating different levels of Hypophthalmichthys molitrix flesh. The protein content in the EPSs varied based on fish flesh incorporation, peaking at 52.66% in Ap100/Hm300 (Non-boil). Protein and carbohydrate contents showed an inverse correlation across EPSs, with the highest carbohydrate content of 60.89% in sample Ap400/Hm0 (Boil). Lipid content was also found to correlate with H. molitrix flesh content in EPSs, ranging from 1.59% to 18.41%. Amino acid analysis identified 11 types, with methionine as the most prevalent, followed by leucine, phenylalanine, and lysine. GC-MS analysis revealed 51 bioactive compounds, including carbonic acid, hentriacontane, and various fatty acids. FT-IR analysis showed characteristic bonds, while color analysis displayed L* values ranging from 24.37 to 30.97. SEM analyses depicted the microstructure, surface view, and elemental composition of the EPSs, and EDX showed an abundance of Ca, N, K, O, C, Mg, Na, P, Cl, Mn, and Fe. Therefore, EPSs prepared from A. philoxeroides and H. molitrix could offer a promising approach for effectively utilizing aquatic biomass and providing both plant and animal nutrients to consumers. Several lignocellulosic wastes are generated in the pulp and paper industry (PPI), such as small wood chips (pinchips) and paper sludge, presenting a high cellulose content suitable to be converted into biofuels or bio-products in a forest biorefinery scheme. In this work, two schemes of biorefinery were proposed for their valorization, processing small eucalyptus wood pinchips in two different strategies: (i) autohydrolysis at 230ºC, and (ii) autohydrolysis at 195ºC followed by organosolv process (47.7% ethanol-water, 198ºC for 60 min). More than 95% of cellulose was recovered in both schemes. In the combined process, 76% of delignification was achieved and 78% of xylan was solubilized as xylooligosaccharides. To reduce operational cost of lignocellulosic biomass-to-ethanol fermentation, the mixture of the treated eucalyptus pinchips from two processes with sludge was also proposed to increase the initial glucan content and to supply a rich source of nitrogen (present in the sludge). For that, two experimental designs were carried out for ethanol production by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process. Ethanol from SSF assays using sludge as co-substrate at 0.6 g of sludge/g of treated wood pinchips and 16 FPU/g of pretreated solids allowed to obtain 59 g/L (90% of conversion) and 46 g/L (96% of conversion) when blended with the wood from autohydrolysis and with the wood from autohydrolysis followed by organosolv, respectively. Herein, we successfully construct the 3D biocompatible graphene through crosslinking 2D graphene nanosheet onto carbon fiber paper with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as anode of the alcohol biofuel cell. Compared with the bioanode without 3D graphene, the current density and output power of PDDA‐graphene‐ADH bioanode is increased by 23 % and 41 % at a high concentration of ethanol at pH 8.9, suggesting the stabilization role of graphene in enzyme loading. The study provides us a deep analysis on structures and performances of the bioanode incl. electrochemistry, X‐ray photoelectron spectra, and atomic force microscopy images, which is significant to develop the new methods to construct 3D porous electrodes in energy conversion device. Summary: A novel bioprocess design to convert paper mill sludge (PMS) to biofuels is proposed in this work. The design utilizes cellulosic fiber recovered from the PMS via optimized de‐ashing (HCl washing) step. This work specifically provided a technical and economic analysis of paper mill sludge conversion into biofuel production using a novel protocol. The protocol is based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis to assess the quality of the contained cellulose prior to further processing. The results are crucially important to determine the suitability of the PMS feedstock to produce biofuels. SEM analysis was employed as a preliminary screening tool to evaluate sludge digestibility and conversion. The SEM characterization technique established a direct relationship between the fiber morphology, presence of crystals salts and sugar yield after enzymatic hydrolysis. Substantial structural changes were observed before and after de‐ashing the sludge samples, leading to a correlation between the surface morphology and the washing step. The results suggested that de‐ashing changes the surface morphology and upon analysis, increased the sugar yield up to about 86% as opposed to 2.2% in sludge sample A as an example. The PMS conversion into biofuel was simulated using Aspen PLUS and compared to a similar process using corn stover as feedstock. The simulation results showed it is 20% cheaper to produce bioethanol from PMS compared to corn stover. Hibiscus cannabinus (kenaf) is an annual fiber crop grown in warm seasons and known for its remarkable productivity; it has been cultivated worldwide for thousands of years as a fiber source. While every part of the plant can be utilized for some purpose, its primary significance lies in the diverse applications of its cellulosic fiber. Kenaf features a blend of long bast and short core fibers, rendering it suitable for various industrial uses. Initially utilized for cordage and livestock feed, kenaf's applications have expanded over the last century to encompass its utilization as paper pulp, biocomposites, textiles, biomass energy, seed oil, filtration aids, industrial absorbents, and even as a component of potting medium or as a potential source of medicine. Although traditionally a niche crop, the discovery of its diverse applications positions kenaf for rapid expansion in production in the upcoming decades. This article aims to explore the manifold applications of kenaf, highlighting those with the greatest future potential and discussing those that hold promise for commercial-level application with additional research. • A distributed constant type equivalent circuit model for paper-based lactate biofuel cells was proposed. • Parameter values using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were estimated. • Local EIS measurement was performed to demonstrate the validity of the equivalent circuit model. In this study, a distributed constant-type equivalent circuit model for paper-based lactate biofuel cells (PBFCs) where the anode and cathode are formed on the same plane was constructed, and a method of determining parameter values in the equivalent circuit model was proposed. When PBFC were prepared and the electrochemical impedance of the entire cell was measured, the Nyquist diagram produced a spectrum due to the current line distribution. Parameters, such as charge transfer and solution resistances, were calculated from the obtained spectrum using theoretical impedance equations derived from the proposed equivalent circuit model proposed. In addition, the behavior of the current distribution in the battery was evaluated in detail by moving the reference electrode on and performing local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at multiple points on the electrode. The models and methods proposed in this study are good for evaluating systems affected by distributed current lines, such as flat batteries, and for determining cell design, electrode areas, and arrangements. Characterization of neutral sulphite semi-chemical black liquor (NSSCBL), sampled from paper manufacturing process that uses recycled fibers as primary feedstock, was carried out for potential bioenergy and biomaterial applications. Physico-chemical characteristics including inorganic elements content, thermogravimetric analysis, GC/MS, and FT-IR are presented. The black liquor of the recycled fibers in the manufacturing process revealed unique characteristics in terms of chemical composition profile compared to the black liquor originating from regular pulp and paper industries. The major findings include the presence of chemical compounds, from a non-plant origin, such as derivatives of hexanedioic acid in significant quantities. The favorable biofuel characteristics of this black liquor are: neutral pH, a higher volatile content, and HHV. The study included isolation and diagnosis of some types of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria capable of decomposition and fermentation of waste papers cellulose. Forty samples were collected from different environments (agricultural soil, wastewater, and normal soil) and three types of bacteria were diagnosis and isolated ( Clostridium phytofermentous , Eschrichia coli , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ). The ability of studied bacteria on the production of cellulose decomposing enzymes was evaluated using UV absorbance method. Highest activity was obtained via Clostridium phytofermentous bacteria with maximum value of 2.52 IU/mL, while Pseudomonas aeroginosa gave 2.21 IU/mL and Eschrichia coli unit gave 2.09 IU/ml. The results showed the effect of some environmental conditions on the effectiveness of the production of the enzyme cellulose. Optimum temperature range was 35–40 °C and pH ranges of 7–9. Ethyl alcohol concentration was measured using titration method, maximum concentration of alcohol produced by Eschrichia coli , which reached 8.28 g/L, while in case of Pseudomonas aeroginosa reached 7.86 g/l, and Clostridium phytofermentous reached 6.62 g/L. There is an increasing need forwearable diagnostic sensor devices and for enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) as efficient power sources. In this study, a six-glucose/O² biofuel cell array connected in series was fabricated by screen printing as a self-powered glucose sensor exhibiting an electromotive force of 3.2 V. Porous carbon electrodes were formed by screen printing ofMgO-templated carbon on water-repellent paper to improve the performance of the cathode and thus prevent it from being the limiting step. The bioanode contained glucose oxidase as a catalyst and tetrathiafulvalene as a mediator, and the cathode contained bilirubin oxidase as an oxygen reduction catalyst. A good linear relationship was obtained between the output of EBFCs and glucose concentration (1-25 mM), which contains the range of urine glucose levels. Herein, a paper-based glucose/air biofuel cell (BFC) was constructed and implemented for self-powered pesticide detection. Our developed paper-based chip relies on a hollow-channel to transport fluids rather than capillarity, which reduces analysis times as well as physical absorption. The gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were adapted to modify the paper fibers to fabricate the flexible conductive paper anode/cathode electrode (Au–PAE/CNT–PCE). Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) using 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as a template were synthesized on Au–PAE for signal control. In the cathode, bilirubin oxidase (BOD) was used for the oxygen reduction reaction. Based on a competitive reaction between 2,4-D and glucose-oxidase-labeled 2,4-D (GOx-2,4-D), the amount of GOx immobilized on the bioanode can be simply tailored, thus a signal-off self-powered sensing platform was achieved for 2,4-D determination. Meanwhile, the coupling of the paper supercapacitor (PS) with the paper-based chip provides a simple route for signal amplification. Combined with a portable digital multi-meter detector, the amplified signal can be sensitively readout. Through rational design of the paper analytical device, the combination of BFC and PS provides a new prototype for constructing a low-cost, simple, portable, and sensitive self-powered biosensor lab-on-paper, which could be easily expanded in the field of clinical analysis and drug delivery. The EU has set the ambitious target of raising the share of EU energy consumption produced from renewable resources to 32% by 2030, with a target of climate neutrality by 2050. The aim of this paper is to assess the role of biomass usage in the context of these targets. The paper identifies the progress made between 2013 and 2022 by focusing on a selection of EU countries. The largest bioenergy increments of 130, 77, and 60 PJ were reported for Poland, Sweden, and the Netherlands. This study evaluates the crucial role of co-generation and heat in EU regions, with biomass usage between 55 and 80% of the combined heat and power (CHP) energy in Nordic countries. The future perspectives for bioenergy based on EU policies, biomass resources, and technical issues were addressed. The EU possesses around 9% of the global biomass supply, ensuring a certain level of biomass resource dependence. Thus, the biomass usage demand in energy production, non-energy sectors, and transport is expected to rise, leading to increments of 13–76% on biomass imports. It appears that bioenergy development is mostly limited by economic issues and uneven support for bioenergy in different EU countries as well as environmental issues. The study shows a promising and sustainable potential of bioenergy in the EU as a renewable energy source while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and the economy. By 2050, liquid biofuels are likely to be increasingly used in the transport sector. Non-energy sector usage of biomass is still in an early stage of development, except for the pulp and paper industry, and significant use of biomass in non-energy sectors seems unlikely in the near future. Abstract: Bacterial cellulose was combined with wood cellulose papers in order to obtain biomaterials with increased barrier properties. For this purpose, different parameters were assessed: two producing bacterial strains (Komagataeibacter xylinus and Gluconacetobacter sucrofermentans), two paper supports to hold bacterial cellulose (filter paper and eucalyptus paper), two kinds of combined biomaterials (composite and bilayer) and two drying temperatures (90 °C and room temperature). Papers with increased barrier properties (100° of water contact angle, 1220 s of water drop test and air permeability < 1 µm (Pa s)−1) were obtained by the addition of bacterial cellulose to each paper support. However, due to the lower initial barrier properties of filter paper, higher improvements were produced with this paper. In addition, bacterial cellulose provided smoother surfaces with higher gloss without a detrimental effect on physical properties. Higher resistance to water absorption was obtained with K. xylinus possibly explained by its longer size fibers than G. sucrofermentans, as analysed by SEM. Smoothness and gloss were specially increased in the bilayer biomaterial although resistance to air and water were further improved in the composite. In this biomaterial drying at high temperature had a detrimental effect. SEM analysis of the products obtained showed the intimate contact among fibers of bacterial cellulose and wood paper. The state of Wisconsin has existing pulp mill infrastructure capable of converting wood into biofuel and value-added products such as lumber, pulp, and paper. Each day, pulp and paper mills produce a waste material that is commonly referred to as sludge. Sludge is typically sent to a landfill or concentrated for burning to produce steam. The primary material present in pulp and paper mill sludge is fiber, which is mostly cellulose. This study showed how to convert pulp mill waste to fermentable sugars using commercially available enzymes. Preliminary economic analysis has shown that sludge can be converted into a fermentable sugar with chemicals costing less than $0.10 per pound of sugar produced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bioethanol produced from lignocellulosic feedstock is a renewable substitute tolessening fossil fuels. The potential of waste office paper (WOP) to be used as renewable biomass for the production of reducing sugar via the enzymatic hydrolysis was evaluated in this study, as well as the production of bioethanol. The pretreatment was accomplished by first presoaking of (WOP) for (24 h), followed by treatment with a 0.1% N NaOH solution. Hydrolysis process was conducted with a crude cellulolytic enzymes produced by Cellulomonasuda (PTCC 1259). The effects of three factors (hydrolysis time, temperature and pH) on the extent of Saccharification were optimized by means of central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM). Two of three factors (hydrolysis time and temperature) were identified to have significant effects (p < 0.05) on glucose release. Under optimum hydrolysis conditions the maximum amount of sugar released and hydrolysis efficiency were (23.86 g/L) and (89.4%), respectively. Sugars released from (WOP) were fermented into bioethanol (0.498 g bioethanol/ g glucose) with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The bioethanol production from sugars released from (WOP) using Saccharomyces cerevisiae was (11.88 g/L) after 48 h of cultivation, corresponding to a volumetric productivity of (0.247 g bioethanol/ L h). Paper-based biofuel cells have the potential to serve as health monitoring devices for urinary glucose and volume by incorporating the fabricated electrodes into nursing diapers. In this study, we evaluate the output power and stability of a biofuel cell by combining 3D impedance measurement and admittance analysis. The 3D impedance-based analysis method can simultaneously detect changes in the overall electrode structure of the enzyme electrode and in the quantity of active enzymes and mediators on the electrode surface. The biofuel cell electrodes were fabricated via screen-printing, using polydimethylglycidyl (poly-GMA)- modified MgO-templated carbon (GMgOC) or poly-GMA-unmodified MgO-templated carbon (NMgOC). The enzymes used were flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent glucose dehydrogenase and bilirubin oxidase, with Azure-A serving as the mediator. Admittance analysis was utilized to measure the enzyme activity and estimate the charge transfer resistance by extrapolating the spectra obtained through admittance analysis. The charge transfer resistances of both electrodes exhibited a greater stability for the GMgOC electrode. This can be attributed to the covalent immobilization of the enzyme and mediator on the electrode facilitated by GMgOC, effectively suppressing enzyme and mediator elution. The electric double-layer capacitance values of both electrodes indicated the overall stability of the electrode structure during the measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article offers information on the commercialization and biomass gasification technologies of black liquors. It states the effective capital intensities and production costs. Major assessment of the performance of the commercial gasification-based biorefineries integrated with kraft pulp and paper mills was also taken into account. Biorefinery was attributed for the difference in electricity delivered through biofuels. A chart is provided that depicts levelized costs for energy commodities in biorefining process.

Abstract: To overcome declining markets and low-cost competition, Canadian pulp and paper (P&P) mills are considering the diversification of their product platform. Investing in bioenergy is emerging as a promising way to boost the sector. In this paper, we present a mathematical programming approach to evaluate the profitability of bioenergy investments in the case of a P&P mill, while assessing technical and associated economic risks. The mill, called the integrated forest biorefinery (IFBR), could produce a set of high-value bioproducts from biomass generated in the mill or supplied from outside. P&P activity generates residues, such as black liquor and pulp sludge, which could be used to produce bioenergy. P&P activity should then be well managed, by considering the possibility of temporarily stopping the production of P&P, while assuming the costs associated with the shutdowns. The objective is to develop a mathematically-based approach for investors and stakeholders, within the forest sector that aims to optimise the value creation network of the IFBR and to maximise the profitability of future investments in bioenergy, while optimising the existing P&P activity. Abstract Solar-reflective thermal insulating coating (SRC) has received great attention because of its desired heat reflective properties and water repellency, which may impart high-value to cellulosic paper via industrially well-established surface coating process. However, the feasibility and possibility of surface application of SRC to cellulosic paper have not been explored. Herein, in the present work, SRC was designed/developed and subsequently used in the surface application to cellulosic paper. Effect of feeding level of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO 2) on rheological behavior of the coating, as well as heat-reflective properties, water repellency and mechanical properties of the surface-coated paper was studied. Results showed that the as-obtained coating samples exhibited a notable shear-thinning behavior and displayed strong dependence of rheological behavior on nano-TiO 2 amount. Furthermore, the increased nano-TiO 2 amount appeared to induce the improved hemispherical emittance of coated paper. The coating weight was also found to exert a positive effect on the hemispherical emittance of coated paper. In addition, it was confirmed that the nano-TiO 2 addition played an important role in improving the water repellency and mechanical properties of coated paper. Abstract: A great interest has been arising about the production of fuels and advanced chemicals from renewable resources such as wooden biomass in the so-called biorefineries. Pulp and paper mills are often seen as the most obvious fundamental module of such industrial sites, because of the common feedstock and the chemical transformations that already occur in the process. In this paper the model of real Kraft pulp and paper mill is developed and optimized from energetic point of view using process integration techniques, in order to assess the potential for energy saving and to establish a starting point for future research on biorefinery sites. Improvements to the configurations of the multi-effect evaporator and of the steam cycle in the CHP system have been introduced, and three different levels of heat integration boundaries have been considered (multi-effect evaporator, mill sub-processes, and total site). Results indicate a significant potential for the decrease in thermal energy requirement and/or the increase in power production for the same pulp and paper production. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: As a significant fraction of municipal solid waste, waste paper is a potential source for producing bioethanol. In the present paper, bioethanol production from various waste papers (newspaper, office paper, cardboard and magazine) using an enzyme complex (Cellic Ctec 1) was evaluated from an economic standpoint. Four bases cases without pre-treatment and two state-of-the-art cases (including dilute acid pre-treatment for office paper and oxidative lime pre-treatment for newspaper) were constructed using laboratory experimental data, literature values, expert consultations and simulation using AspenPlus™. Several scenarios were also carried out to assess the sensitivity of various technology parameters (i.e. solids loading in saccharification, anaerobic digestion and fermentation efficiency, and sugar yields in pre-treatment). The sensitivity analysis suggested that the economic performance of bioethanol produced from waste paper could be improved significantly with an up to 25% reduction in minimum ethanol selling price (MESP) by increasing solids loading in saccharification and with a 6% reduction in MESP by enhancing fermentation efficiency. The comparison of the bioethanol selling price at pump (reference year 2009) and the petrol price showed bioethanol produced from newspaper, office paper and cardboard were economically competitive with petrol.
