The article discusses the development of the Potsdam Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM-PIK) by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Potsdam, Germany for simulations of large-scale ice sheet-shelf systems. It describes the calculation of velocities using superposition of the shallow ice approximation (SIA) and the plug-flow type shallow shelf approximation (SSA). It also explores the use of Neumann boundary conditions for the SSA equations in modeling ice shelf margins.
