This paper discusses early-career academics' development at a university in Hong Kong. Reflecting the impact of local context, the paper explores cultural and structural influences that can impinge on teaching and learning strategies for new academics. Barriers such as student learning behaviour and publication pressure may discourage new academics from taking an active interest in ongoing professional development beyond the mandatory component. However, the effect of Chinese culture, which places a strong emphasis on 'face' and harmonious human relationships, and the existence of hidden ('ghost') rules can collectively add pitfalls that inhibit new academics' full engagement in their teaching roles. This paper is a situated biographical reflection on the author's Hong Kong teaching experience written using a narrative inquiry approach, describing attempts to generate innovative pedagogical practices. The journey explores how autocratic, traditional Chinese cultural expectations in Hong Kong education have nurtured a commonsense belief in “discipline first and then teach”. This teacher/researcher adopted alternative approaches to authority through the use of developmental drama which made teacher image and teacher-student power relationships an object of talk and study. The aim of this paper is to bring together theories and pedagogical models based on the sociology of education, social psychology and drama pedagogy in an effort to change how we teach marginalized students in one distinctive Chinese cultural context. Today we are witnessing a slow paradigmatic shift in Hong Kong's mental health services to becoming more recovery oriented, the context, meaning and process of which, however, is highly individualised as well as culturally sensitive. Therefore, it is imperative to gather the voices of service users. This paper serves to capture the views of a group of service users on the changes they have seen and the ongoing challenges in mental health services in Hong Kong; and to compare the Hong Kong experience with international experience with a view to reflecting on the directions for future development. Objective: The study reported in this paper was aimed at developing understanding of depression-related knowledge and preferences surrounding professional help, medication, and treatment methods among Chinese living in Shanghai, China. Methods: A multi-stage cluster sampling method in which participants were taken from 6 of the 20 districts in Shanghai was adopted for this study. The 522 Shanghai Chinese participants were presented with a vignette describing an individual with depression before being asked questions designed to assess both their understanding of depression and their preferences surrounding professional help, medication, and treatment methods. A comparative approach was adopted to identify similarities and differences between our findings and those of two previous studies on the mental health literacy of Chinese living in Melbourne, Australia, and Hong Kong, respectively. Results: A similarly low percentage of Chinese people in each of Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Australia recognized depression. Fewer Shanghai Chinese than Chinese living in Hong Kong and Australia ascribed the 'anxiety/stress' label to the depression vignette and endorsed professionals and informal network members as helpful. Although a far lower percentage of Shanghai Chinese endorsed the use of counseling professionals, a much higher percentage of the same group endorsed Chinese medical doctors and herbal medication. A lower percentage of Shanghai Chinese endorsed 'lifestyle changes' as a strategy for combating depression than did Chinese subjects living in Australia and Hong Kong. On the other hand, a higher percentage of Shanghai residents endorsed psychiatric treatment and the traditional Chinese practices of 'eating nutritious food/taking supplements' and 'qigong' than among the other two groups of Chinese. Conclusions: This study underlines the need for campaigns aimed at improving the mental health literacy of Chinese in Shanghai. questionnaire was administered to 231 Hong Kong preservice teacher education students to examine their epistemological beliefs and conceptions of learning. Pearson correlation analysis showed significant pairs of epistemological beliefs and conceptions of learning. Regression and path analysis showed epistemological beliefs had significant predictor relationships with conceptions of learning. Four structural equation models were proposed to examine the predictive relationships between epistemological beliefs and selected pairs of quantitative and qualitative conceptions of learning, and the models were validated by confirmatory factor analysis. The results support the hypothesis that epistemological beliefs have significant predictive relationships with quantitative and qualitative conceptions of learning, implying epistemological beliefs play an important role in students' learning. Research has shown that epistemological beliefs have significant relations with cognitive metacognitive variables such as reading comprehension, learning and teaching approaches, learning conceptions and motivation. However, there are few theoretical frameworks or models informing how epistemological beliefs function in the learning process and outcomes. Therefore, this paper attempts to review literature on epistemological beliefs and learning research apply the findings to Biggs' 3P model of classroom learning to exemplify the role epistemological beliefs play in the conceptions of learning of pre-service teachers in Kong. The actions and effects of the pre-service teachers' epistemological beliefs on learning conceptions, approaches to learning and the product of learning to teach are discussed within the cultural context. Cantonese opera is a local cultural treasure of Hong Kong. With lots of language (Cantonese), literature and cultural elements, it is surely not pure entertainment. The "Integrated Cantonese Opera in Chinese Language Education in Hong Kong" project aims to integrate Cantonese opera into the Chinese subjects' school-based curriculum, especially for the sake of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, which will be implemented in year 2009. The project guides students to learn, praise and respect the traditional Chinese culture, which hopefully will help passing this valuable asset onto the next generation. The project includes workshops on Cantonese Opera acting, appreciation of scripts and also research projects on special topics related to Cantonese Opera. The project is carried out by the Center for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research, in the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. The first stage of the project has successfully completed in May 2007. This paper concludes the teaching experience and learning outcome of the first stage of the project. This paper examines the factors that contribute to career advancement in a sample of forty-four Hong Kong managers working in three local companies that had undergone restructuring. The findings indicate that they were acutely aware of shifts in the nature of their career paths but generally were reactive to changes rather than proactive. Their concerns about changes were mostly instrumental and pragmatic judgments about how things might affect their job security and career prospects. To increase their chances of getting promoted, they focused on human-capital investment by upgrading and widening their work skills. While they felt obligated to work overtime and enhance their performance by taking on extra duties and responsibilities, they sought to develop a harmonious relationship with the environment rather than dominate it. They disliked challenging their superiors, preferring instead to imitate their superiors' behavioural patterns. In their efforts to increase opportunities for career advancement, they employed business networking and visibility as 'wooing' strategies. This paper addresses cultural sensitivity in applying the Satir model in the Hong Kong Chinese cultural setting, focusing on congruent communication. The authors contend that Satir was sensitive to the demands of culture. Her focus on individuality, equality, and freedom responds aptly to the egalitarian individualist ethos of the United States. In Hong Kong the family is generally dominated by hierarchical collectivist values. Applying the Satir model as it is being practiced in the United States totally ignores prevailing cultural conditions. Following the spirit of Satir, the authors propose the adoption of an emic approach, drawing inspiration and resource from traditional Chinese culture and maintaining continuity with hierarchical collectivism while protecting individual quests for equality, freedom, and independence. This paper explores managerial values and practices in three rapidly growing economies in Asia: Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the People's Republic of China. Differences and similarities in six cultural dimensions were investigated. Although participants in the present study share a common cultural heritage, their cultural values may be very different. This paper reports part of a longitudinal research project, which sought to capture students’ conceptualization of caring practice as they progressed to different levels of study in a nursing diploma programme in Hong Kong. Model emulation was found to be an effective means of focusing students’ learning processes on the moral aspects of nursing practice. The theory of model emulation from a Chinese perspective and how it is applied to create a learning context to allow students to acquire a moral sense of nursing are discussed. The participating students are invited to be sincere enquirers in the pursuit of the good embedded in practice through introspective self-examination and dialogue. They are asked to describe and share their experience of positive and negative examples of nursing in written accounts. Van Kaam’s phenomenological method was adopted to explicate the good and bad constituents of nursing from these examples, with the students assuming an active role in the explication process. Background: Staff members' views can have a significant impact on sexuality issues of people with intellectual disabilities. Research on the impact of sociocultural factors in this area in the Chinese context is sparse. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with seven professionals (social worker, nurse, life skills trainer and manager) to explore their experiences of and attitudes towards the sexual needs of people with intellectual disabilities by applying interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: The study identified two major themes, each with two sub‐themes: 1. Professional handling of the sexual needs of people with intellectual disabilities (sex education and intervention); 2. Barriers (incompatible approaches and parental resistance). Participants also experienced feelings of resignation facing the barriers they encountered. Collectivism and cultural view about sex are potentially the influencing factors. Conclusion: This study highlights the need to adopt an evidence‐based sex education programme whose content and delivery should take account of cultural factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aimed at assessing the differences in prevalence rates of common health behavior among adolescents in the five Chinese cities and the influential factors at the contextual and individual levels. Method: We compared the standardized rates of three lifestyle behaviors (sedentary, dietary, and physical activity) and three addictive behaviors (cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and participation in gambling) among a sample of 13,950 adolescents. The sample was randomly selected from five cities, including Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Zhuhai, and Wuhan. Population size, GDP per capita, and literacy at the city level as well as parental monitoring and school performance at the student's level were assessed. Multi-level mixed effect models were used to examine the interaction of individual level factors with study sites. Results: The six health behaviors differed significantly across sites with the highest rates of alcohol consumption in Hong Kong (39.5 %), of cigarette smoking in Macau (9.8 %), and of gambling in Taipei (37.1 %) and Hong Kong (35.9 %). The city-level measures were associated with only a few behavioral measures. Relative to Hong Kong, parental monitoring had stronger association with the three addictive behaviors in the other sites. Conclusion: Findings suggest that although the study sites share similar Chinese culture, students in the five cities differed from each other with regard to levels of health behaviors. The majority of Western psychotherapies are known and practiced in Hong Kong, while psychoanalysis still has little resonance. A recent study finds that psychoanalysis is perceived neither as ineffective nor as necessarily in conflict with Hong Kong Chinese values. Nevertheless, Hong Kong Chinese culture influences how psychoanalysis is received and understood, when compared to Mainland China and Taiwan. It is argued that a better reception in the latter two was possible because of different social and historical backgrounds, different clinical backgrounds of those who receive training, and the more active role of Western psychoanalysts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of actual and ideal body ratings to peer relationships and physical self-concept in Chinese children. Participants were 194 Chinese children aged 10-12 years from two primary schools in Hong Kong, China. Valid and reliable questionnaires were administered to assess the associations between physical self-concept (Physical Self-Perception Profile [PSPP]), peer relationships (Peer Relationship Index [PRI]), and actual and ideal body rating (silhouette matching task [SMT]). Hierarchical regression analyses showed that only attractive body and global self-worth made unique contributions to peer relationships. Significant group differences were found in physical condition, physical strength and attractive body in the three different weight perception groups on the scales of PSPP and PRI, respectively. The present study revealed that compared to normal weight children, overweight children rate themselves more negatively in terms of body attractiveness and peer relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study's objective is to survey the attitudes of Chinese people living in Hong Kong toward genomic science and technology (GST) and their ethical and social implications. Using a 24-item questionnaire, 877 Cantonese-speaking residents between age 18 and 64 with minimum high school education are interviewed by telephone. Multiple regression analysis identifies education level as the most important demographic variable. Overall, respondents have mild agreement with genetic determinism and the use of GST for disease prevention but not for non-therapeutic genetic enhancement and production of “genetically modified” crops or meat. Respondents strongly believe that GST tampers with nature and resources should be used to solve other healthcare problems first. Respondents also show little concern that personal genetic information may be abused by their employers or schools and have only a minimal willingness to share personal genetic information with their family members. In-depth interviews were conducted for 203 Hong Kong Chinese in Mainland China (HIM) and 198 Mainland Chinese in Hong Kong (MIH), followed by two-level theme analyses, to examine their communication experiences and adaptation. The two groups were found to be dissimilar in terms of socioeconomic status, purpose of migration, and process of adaptation. Many HIM tended to evaluate the new environment from a “new workplace” view, mentioning adjustment and communication at workplace. Most MIH, on the other hand, used a “new home” approach, expecting a happy life with good income. The major challenge for most HIM was getting used to a less developed physical environment and an organizational culture with lower efficiency and work ethics. For most MIH, the main source of hardship came from insufficient protection for workers' rights and interests. Questions have been raised about the applicability of Western theory in an Eastern context. Two case studies are used to illustrate bow the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) is useful in problem identification and intervention planning in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, mental health care has traditionally focused on the individual and the concept of considering the family as the unit of care is relatively new, The purpose of this article is to describe the process of planning, implementing, and evaluating a family systems nursing project in a psychiatric setting in Hong Kong. Psychiatric nurses (N = 110) participated in seminars focusing on family systems nursing concepts and individuals and families suffering from mental illness. The Calgary Family Assessment Model and the Calgary Family Intervention Model formed the framework for practice. Significant changes were found both in the nurses' critical appraisal of their clinical practice related to family systems nursing and in their reflections on the reciprocity in their nurse/family relationships. In addition, hospital-wide systems outcomes were noted. This project appears to demonstrate that a famiy systems nursing approach is relevant for psychiatric nurses caring for Chinese individuals and their families suffering from mental illness. The proportion of women managers in Hong Kong has been steadily increasing in recent years. Hong Kong's 'can-do' spirit, education system and laws against sex discrimination probably have contributed to the increase. However, roles in the private (home) and public (work) spheres remain highly gendered. This has led to intense worak-family stress for women managers, some of whom also face sex discrimination at work, such as negative attitudes toward women, the old-boy network and sexual harassment. However, the overall level of awareness of sex roles and sex discrimination among women managers is low. Furthermore, women managers tend not to court open and direct confrontation. Instead, they tend to pursue individualistic personal coping strategies. Women managers rely on support from their extended family and hire domestic help to cope with work-family stress. Women managers also work hard to prepare themselves for a job move when they perceive or encounter sex discrimination. They tend not to make demands of their husbands, the workplace, or the government due to concepts about the private and public divide and about gender roles in these two spheres. We argue that political agendas which push for more flexible gender roles, state childcare and women- and family-friendly organizational policies are needed to bring more women into management at a faster pace. Over the past three decades, Hong Kong has witnessed unprecedented economic prosperity, a decrease in family solidarity, an increase in social problems, and a dramatic rise in the incidence of divorce. Under colonial rule for 150 years, which ended with the return of sovereignty to China in 1997, the identity of the Hong Kong Chinese is a combination of traditional Chinese and modern Western culture. Despite Western influences, Chinese cultural heritage remains the major source of influence in all aspects of life. This article presents a summary of traditional Chinese culture, characteristics of contemporary Hong Kong society, factors believed to influence the high divorce rate, and the impact of divorce on Hong Kong families. The development, use, acceptability, and effectiveness of mediation in Hong Kong is reviewed, and suggestions for adapting it to Chinese families are proposed. Direction for future development of mediation in Hong Kong focuses on the need for further research to develop a scientifically sound knowledge base that will help to inform culturally competent mediation practice. Background. The sudden death of a family member is always traumatic to the family. Nursing actions such as providing comfort measures and providing an opportunity to view the deceased were consistently perceived as helpful by the suddenly bereaved. Little is known about the perception of bereaved family members in Hong Kong concerning the care they received in accident and emergency (A & E) departments. This study serves to identify actions, which were perceived as helpful in A & E setting in Hong Kong. Aim. To gain knowledge about what nursing actions bereaved family members in Hong Kong perceived as helpful. Method. This study was exploratory and descriptive in nature, and used a quantitative approach. Data were collected through structured telephone interviews using a modified Tye's questionnaire. Results. Seventy-six bereaved subjects were recruited in an A & E department in Hong Kong. The subjects perceived written information, opportunity to view the deceased, and respecting individual customs and religious procedures as most helpful and conversely, offering sedation, discouraging viewing of the body, and providing comfort measures as most unhelpful. No statistically significant differences among the overall mean of helpful nursing actions according to the subjects' age, gender, education level, family income and religions were found while using Mann–Whitney's U and Kruskal–Wallis' tests. Significant correlations between some actions and the respondents' age, family income and educational level were found. Conclusion.
