Among the most critical issues, climatic abnormalities caused by global warming also affect Taiwan significantly for the past decade. The increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events, in which concentrated and intensive rainfalls generally cause geohazards including landslides and debris flows. The extraordinary Typhoon Morakot hit Southern Taiwan on 8 August 2009 and induced serious flooding and landslides. In this study, the Kao-Ping River watershed was adopted as the study area, and the typical events 2007 Krosa Typhoon and 2009 Morakot Typhoon were adopted to train the susceptibility model. This study employs rainfall frequency analysis together with the atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) downscaling estimation to understand the temporal rainfall trends, distributions, and intensities in the Kao-Ping River watershed. The rainfall estimates were introduced in the landslide susceptibility model to produce the predictive landslide susceptibility for various rainfall scenarios, including abnormal climate conditions. Xinjiang, located in the arid region of the northwest, is one of the areas most sensitive to global changes. The Kaidu River Basin, situated in the heart of Xinjiang, is one of the sources of China's largest inland river—the Tarim River. The Kaidu River not only bears the responsibility for supplying water for industrial use and agricultural production and people's daily life in the basin, but also plays a crucial role in ecological water supply to the Tarim River. Studying and analyzing the characteristics and trends of meteorological condition in the future under climate change can provide important references and a basis for a deeper understanding of changes in the hydrological process and water resources in the basin. Therefore, this paper selects seven precipitation bias correction methods and four temperature bias correction methods to adjust the precipitation and temperature output data of eight general circulation models of the Sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) within the Kaidu River Basin. The applicability of different bias correction methods in the study area is evaluated, and based on the corrected future meteorological data and calculated extreme meteorological index, the trends of meteorological data (precipitation, temperature) in the future period (2025–2050) under four SSP scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, SSP5-8.5) in the Kaidu River Basin are analyzed. The results show that: (1) Different types of bias correction methods have different correction focus and effects; their reflections on evaluation indicators are also different. (2) In the future period (2025–2050), the annual precipitation and average temperature in the Kaidu River Basin are higher than those in the historical period (1975–2014). The average annual temperature shows an upward trend in the future, but the annual precipitation shows a downward trend in the future except for the SSP2-4.5 scenario. (3) Compared with the historical period, the extreme precipitation in the future period under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5 scenarios is higher than that in the historical period, and the number of rainless days decreases. In the future, under the SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, the probability of meteorological drought events occurring due to high temperatures in the basin may further increase, while under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, the situation of high temperatures and heavy rain in the basin may continue to increase. There is great uncertainty about the future effects of climate change on the global economic, social, environmental, and water sectors. This paper focuses on watershed vulnerabilities to climate change by coupling a distributed hydrological model with artificial neural networks and spatially distributed indicators for the use of a predictive model of such vulnerability. The analyses are complemented by a Monte Carlo evaluation of the uncertainty associated with the projections of the global circulation models, including how such uncertainty impacts the vulnerability forecast. To test the proposal, the paper uses current and future vulnerabilities of the Turbio River watershed, located in the semi-arid zone of Guanajuato (Mexico). The results show that nearly 50% of the watershed currently has medium and high vulnerabilities, and only the natural areas in the watershed show low vulnerabilities. In the future, an increase from medium to high vulnerability is expected to occur in urban and agricultural areas of the basin, with an associated uncertainty of ±15 mm in the projected precipitation. Accurate climate projections help policymakers mitigate the negative effects of climatic changes and prioritize environmental issues based on scientific evidences. These projections rely heavily on the outputs of GCMs (General Circulation Models), but the large number of GCMs and their different outputs in each region confuses researchers in their selection. In this paper, we analyzed the performance of a CMIP6 (Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6) multi-model ensemble for Pr (precipitation) data over NE (Northern Europe). First of all, we evaluated the overall performance of 12 CMIP6 models from GCMs in 30 years of 1985–2014. Furthermore, future projections were analyzed between 2071 and 2100 using SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways). Then, simulations were statistically improved using an ensemble method to correct the systematic error of the CMIP6 models and then the capacity of postprocessed data to reproduce historical trends of climate events was investigated. Finally, the possible spatio-temporal changes of future Pr data were explored in Tana River Basin. The results of this study show that different CMIP6 models do not have the same accuracy in estimating Pr in the study area. However, the ensemble method can be effective in increasing the accuracy of the projections. The results of this study projected a change in the monthly Pr data over Tana River Basin by 2.46% and 2.06% from 2071 to 2100 compared to the historical period, based on SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5, respectively. This paper assesses the long-term combined effects of land use (LU) and climate change on river hydrology and water scarcity of two rivers of the Western Ghats of India. The historical LU changes were studied for four decades (1988–2016) using the maximum likelihood algorithm and the long-term LU (2016–2075) was estimated using the Dyna-CLUE prediction model. Five General Circulation Models (GCMs) were utilized to assess the effects of climate change (CC) and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used for hydrological modeling of the two river catchments. To characterize granular effects of LU and CC on regional hydrology, a scenario approach was adopted and three scenarios depicting near-future (2006–2040), mid-future (2041–2070), and far-future (2071–2100) based on climate were established. The present rate of LU change indicated a reduction in forest cover by 20% and an increase in urbanized areas by 9.5% between 1988 and 2016. It was estimated that forest cover in the catchments may be expected to halve compared to the present-day LU (55% in 2016 to 23% in 2075), along with large-scale conversion to agricultural lands (13.5% in 2016 to 49.5% in 2075). As a result of changes to LU and forecasted climate, it was found that rivers in the Western Ghats of India might face scarcity of fresh water in the next two decades until the year 2040. However, because of large-scale LU conversion toward the year 2050, streamflow in rivers might increase as high as 70.94% at certain times of the year. Although an increase in streamflow is perceived favorable, the streamflow changes during summer and winter may be expected to affect the cropping calendar and crop yield. This paper shows how low-impact development (LID) practices affect the resilience of stormwater drainage system under climate change scenarios. A rainfall-runoff model was calibrated and evaluated a in a tropical watershed located in Midwestern Brazil. An ensemble of 17 general circulation model outputs forced by Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) was used to create future climate change scenarios up to 2095. The LID efficiency was evaluated based on the runoff peak reduction and the resilience of stormwater drainage by means of a resilience index. Overall, LID combinations showed a reduction in runoff peak higher than 20%, and the best LID combination had a reduction of as much as 46%. This represents a significant improvement in the resilience against flooding in the study area. Therefore, the findings can contribute to the increase in widespread adoption of LID and can encourage decisionmakers to provide such practices for urban flood management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the Upper Tigris River (UTR) drainage basin in Turkey for climate change impacted runoff estimations. Statistical downscaling method (SDM) is used by taking into consideration spatial dependence function (SDF) for the scenario precipitation projections at a set of available meteorology stations. Temporal adjustment between the climate scenarios and precipitation record time series is achieved by the white Markov (WM) stochastic process. Although various climate research center scenario data are considered, herein, only the general circulation model (GCM) A2 scenario data are adapted from the Hadley Center, England. The precipitation and runoff results are presented in decadal groups starting from 2001 to 2050 as cumulative monthly precipitation (CMP) and cumulative monthly runoff (CMR) graphs. It is observed that after 2021, precipitation decreases at about 12.5% and after 2030, it is 26%. Runoff projections indicate that they may decrease at about 30% especial after 2040. This paper presents the results of studies on water resources management strategies, under the influence of climate change, in the Zarrineh River basin, providing some 41% of the total inflow into the Lake Urmia. Climate change simulation over the period 1992–2050 was performed by downscaling of seven global circulation models. The best model was then selected for modelling the hydrological behavior of the basin using a rainfall-runoff model while an allocation model was used to evaluate future supply and demands. A system dynamics model was further utilized to investigate the sustainability of the dynamic behavior of the basin. Five suggested water resources management strategies for two future climate scenarios were investigated. Results indicated that implementation of the strategy of 40% reduction in agricultural water demand would provide higher degrees of sustainability. Based on this, the average annual inflow to Lake Urmia in the years 2021 to 2050 would be 1029.75 MCM, which is equal to 81.02% of the Lake Urmia's environmental requirement from the river's share. The time at which climate change signal can be clearly distinguished from noise is known as time of emergence (ToE) and is typically detected by a general circulation model (GCM) signal-to-noise ratio exceeding a certain threshold. ToE is commonly estimated at large scales from GCMs, although management decisions and adaptation strategies are implemented locally. This paper proposes a methodology to estimate ToE for both precipitation and temperature at local scales (i.e., river basin). The methodology considers local climatic conditions and unbiased GCM projections to estimate ToE by using the statistical power to find when the climate significantly differs from the historical one. The method suggests that ToE for temperature already occurred in three Chilean basins (Limarí, Maipo, and Maule). However, in terms of precipitation, an earlier ToE is clearly identified for the Maule basin, indicating that risk assessment and adaptation measures should be implemented first in this basin. Emerging large ensemble climate datasets produced by multiple general circulation models and their downscaling products challenge the limits of hydrodynamic models because of the immense data size. To overcome this new challenge and estimate the discharge quantiles corresponding to different return periods at all river sections in an entire region, this study proposes an event-based regional approach that uses a nationwide distributed rainfall–runoff model as well as large climate projection ensembles. This approach addresses the high computational burden associated with continuous simulations and solves the problem of conventional event-based simulations serving only a single outlet of a basin. For our analysis, we extracted 372 annual maximum 48 h rainfall events that cover the entirety of Shikoku Island and its eight major river basins. Peak discharges were estimated using a 150 m resolution rainfall–runoff–inundation model. These discharges were then screened using either the peak-over-threshold (POT) method or block maxima (BM) method, and frequency curves were subsequently constructed and evaluated. The primary reason for the necessity of POT or BM was to avoid interference from extraneous low discharges. The POT-based frequency curves showed good accuracy when using peak discharges in the range of the top 10–50%, and the results remain stable within this threshold range. The BM method, employing block sizes of 2–5 years, can generate relatively accurate frequency curves, but the choice of block size introduces significant variations in results among certain basins. Generally, the accuracy of results based on the POT method surpasses that of the BM method. Considering the accuracy, computational cost, and result stability, the POT method is preferred. The error introduced by the regional approach was acceptable with more than half of the relative root-mean-square errors remaining within 10% and basically all of the results are within 20%. The results of the regional approach exhibited good accuracy across climate scenarios and provided consistent information regarding future flood quantiles. A regional watershed model was developed for watersheds contributing to Long Island Sound, including the Connecticut River basin. The study region covers approximately 40 900 km2, extending from a moderate coastal climate zone in the south to a mountainous northern New England climate zone dominated by snowmelt in the north. The input data indicate that precipitation and temperature have been increasing for the last 46 years (1961-2006) across the region. Minimum temperature has increased more than maximum temperature over the same period (1961-2006). The model simulation indicates that there was an upward trend in groundwater recharge across most of the modeled region. However, trends in increasing precipitation and groundwater recharge are not significant at the 0.05 level if the drought of 1961-67 is removed from the time series. The trend in simulated snowfall is not significant across much of the region, although there is a significant downward trend in southeast Connecticut and in central Massachusetts. To simulate future trends, two input datasets, one assuming high carbon emissions and one assuming low carbon emissions, were developed from GCM forecasts. Under both of the carbon emission scenarios, simulations indicate that historical trends will continue, with increases in groundwater recharge over much of the region and substantial snowfall decreases across Massachusetts, Connecticut, southern Vermont, and southern New Hampshire. The present study attempts to investigate potential impacts of climate change on floods frequency in Bazoft Basin which is located in central part of Iran. A combination of four general circulation models is used through a weighting approach to assess uncertainty in the climate projections. LARS-WG model is applied to downscale large scale atmospheric data to local stations. The resulting data is in turn used as input of the hydrological model Water and Energy Transfer between Soil, plants and atmosphere (WetSpa) to simulate runoff for present (1971-2000), near future (2020-2049) and far future (2071-2100) conditions. Results demonstrate good performance of both WetSpa and LARS-WG models. In addition in this paper instantaneous peak flow (IPF) is estimated using some empirical equations including Fuller, Sangal and Fill-Steiner methods. Comparison of estimated and observed IPF shows that Fill-Steiner is better than other methods. Then different probability distribution functions are fit to IPF series. Results of flood frequency analysis indicate that Pearson III is the best distribution fitted to IPF data. It is also indicated that flood magnitude will decrease in future for all return periods. This paper aims to evaluate sources of uncertainty in projected hydrological changes under climate change in twelve large-scale river basins worldwide, considering the mean flow and the two runoff quantiles Q (high flow), and Q (low flow). First, changes in annual low flow, annual high flow and mean annual runoff were evaluated using simulation results from a multi-hydrological-model (nine hydrological models, HMs) and a multi-scenario approach (four Representative Concentration Pathways, RCPs, five CMIP5 General Circulation Models, GCMs). Then, three major sources of uncertainty (from GCMs, RCPs and HMs) were analyzed using the ANOVA method, which allows for decomposing variances and indicating the main sources of uncertainty along the GCM-RCP-HM model chain. Robust changes in at least one runoff quantile or the mean flow, meaning a high or moderate agreement of GCMs and HMs, were found for five river basins: the Lena, Tagus, Rhine, Ganges, and Mackenzie. The analysis of uncertainties showed that in general the largest share of uncertainty is related to GCMs, followed by RCPs, and the smallest to HMs. The hydrological models are the lowest contributors of uncertainty for Q and mean flow, but their share is more significant for Q. As many water related disasters occur frequently around the world, proper assessment of future climate change impact on floods and droughts is essential. In this study, we focused on basin-scale climate change impact assessment as necessary information for studying adaptation measures on the basis of integrated water resources management. We used Meteorological Research Institute-Atmospheric General Circulation Model (MRI-AGCM) 3.2S (20 km grid super high resolution model) and a series of simulation methods for climate change analysis. We conducted a comparative study on changes in precipitation, flood discharge and inundation in the future during the wet and dry seasons for five target river basins in the Asian monsoon area. We found that regional precipitation outputs from the high resolution model in this study were in good agreement in the point of tendency of their changes in wet and dry monsoon seasons with the regional precipitation analysis in the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of Working Group 1 (WG1) of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2013). This study illustrated that the proposed methodology can make more detailed descriptions of climate change possible. The study also found the importance of basin-scale runoff and inundation analysis with downscaling especially for basins where floods occur for a short period, suggesting potential differences between flood change and precipitation change from General Circulation Model (GCM) outputs such as maximum 5-day precipitation index in a basin. As a result, this paper confirms the importance of basin-scale discharge and inundation analysis for climate change considering basin characteristics from the viewpoint of river management. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the effects of climate change first on precipitation and temperature, and then on the runoff characteristics of two tropical watersheds located in Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. To achieve this, eighteen General Circulation Models (GCMs) were selected to measure various climate change scenarios under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5, using the reference period of 1985–2014. The GR2M hydrological model was employed to replicate past monthly surface runoff patterns for the Casamance and Kayanga-Géva watersheds. After calibrating and validating the GR2M model, the researchers simulated the predictable effect of climate change on the flow for the near future (2021–2040), medium future (2041–2060), and distant future (2081–2100) for each watershed, using the GCM multi-model ensemble mean. The quantile method was used to correct bias in temperature and precipitation data. The results of bias correction give a correlation coefficient greater than 0.9% for temperatures and 0,6% precipitation between the outputs of the multi-model ensemble and observations used. The results indicate also that all watersheds are expected to experience drier conditions in the near-future, mid-future, and far-future periods under both the SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. Furthermore, the predictable temperature trends consistently show a warmer situation with growing radiative making in the future times. However, the primary factor influencing changes in flow for all watersheds is the projected precipitation changes. The anticipated drier conditions in the near-future, mid-future, and far-future horizons under both scenarios would lead to significantly reduced runoff volumes at the beginning and middle of the rainy season. Consequently, the projected seasonal changes in river flow for all catchments (e.g., under SSP5-8.5 scenario, a decline of -34.47%, -56.01%, and -68.01% was noted, respectively, for the horizons 2050, 2070, and 2090 for the Casamance basin) could lead to new frequent occurrences of drought and water scarcity associated with past hydrological regimes. These scenarios enhance the necessity of improving water management, water prizing, and water recycling policies, to ensure water supply and to reduce tensions among regions and countries. Climate change plays a vital role in the hydrology of any river basin, which may have multidimensional consequences. There is a need to conduct climate change impact assessment studies with updated models and scenarios. This study aimed to assess the impact of climate change on the streamflow and hydropower in Pakistan's Kunhar River basin. Three general circulation models (GCMs), under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenarios (SSPs 2–45 and 5–85), the Soil and Water Assessment Tool, and the flow duration curve were used to project the change in climatic parameters, streamflow, and hydropower potential, respectively. The findings indicated that in the 2080s, the precipitation, maximum, and minimum temperatures are projected to increase by 10%, 2.0 °C, and 3.0 °C under the SSP 2–45 scenario and are projected to increase by 8%, 3.7 °C, and 4.4 °C under the SSP 5–85 scenario, respectively. The annual streamflow may increase by 15 to 11%, and the seasonal fluctuations are more likely to be dominant compared with the annual fluctuations. The hydropower potential will probably increase by 24 to 16% under the SSP 2–45 and 5–85 scenarios in the 2080s. However, seasonal changes in streamflow and hydropower may impact the hydropower plant operation in the basin. The Kunhar River's hydrology may change from snow-fed to a rainfall–runoff river. This study develops a four-module-based multimodel framework, coupled with the projections of general circulation models (GCMs), a hydrological model (SWAT), and two sets of evaluation indicators [Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) and River Regime Index (RRI)], to systematically quantify the response of ecohydrological regimes to climatic change. The Jinsha River Basin (JRB) was selected as a target area for both framework verification and application analysis because of its precious natural conditions, privileged abundant hydropower, and extremely rich fish resources. Results revealed that: (1) temperature and precipitation in the JRB would show increasing trends to varying degrees in the future. The increase in temperature would be much higher than that in precipitation, and the increment would be more significant during the end of the century (2068–2097). (2) The future runoff in the JRB may face an overall decreasing trend, leading to more and more frequent drought disasters. (3) The disturbances in the ecohydrological regime would result in more concentrated runoff and smoother hydrological pulse fluctuations in the JRB, meaning human-assisted participation would be required for the conservation of reproduction and development of ecological resources like Coreius guichenoti. Our findings suggest that effective management of future watershed resources can only be accomplished if an in-depth and comprehensive hydrological evaluation of changing climate is made, and the protection and sustainable development of ecological resources of the JRB in the future will require the participation of stakeholders. Figuring out the alteration in ecohydrological regimes under natural variation and its potential hazards may guide the degree of human participation in futural river protection. The potential impact of climate change on the existing drainage infrastructure has been an essential aspect of many hydrological studies. Climate change that will increase the intensity of precipitation will also increase the magnitude of the design discharge and thus would probably result in adverse effects on the existing drainage facilities. This paper aims to evaluate the potential impact of rainfall intensity variation due to climate change on the existing drainage infrastructure by investigating whether (1) the stormwater drainage infrastructure designed for preclimate conditions is able to sustain future higher discharges, and (2) new design guidelines are necessary to be established to include the potential rainfall intensity variation due to climate change. A case study was conducted using 34 years of rainfall data (1980-2013) obtained from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). These data and the weather scenario data projected by the four run global circulation model (GCMs) under the three emissions scenarios coupled with stochastic weather generator model which generates dailyweather time series statisticallywere used to update the current intensity-duration-frequency curve to reflect the rainfall intensity variation due to climate change. Furthermore, runoff simulation using a storm and sanitary software program was performed to analyze whether the increase in the intensity of rainfall due to climate changewould have an adverse impact on the current drainage systemto convey excess runoff. The results showed thatmost elements of the current drainage infrastructure in the boundary of the study areawere inadequate to convey excess runoff. However, climate change magnifies the problems that already exist in an aging drainage infrastructure. Furthermore, considering the rehabilitation or replacement rates of these aging infrastructures are relatively slow, emphasismust not lie only on the future climate change, but also on identifying the weak spots in the system coupled with, the economic and environmental factors before any changes in design criteria can be recommended due to climate change. Summary The effects of climate change on water resources have been studied extensively throughout the world through the use of hydrologic models coupled with General Circulation Model (GCM) output or climate sensitivity scenarios. This paper examines the effects of hydrologic model parameterization uncertainty or equifinality, where multiple unique hydrologic model parameter sets can result in adequate calibration metrics, on hydrologic projections from downscaled GCMs for three snowmelt-dependent watersheds (upper reaches of the Clearwater, Gunnison, and Sacramento River watersheds) in the western United States. The hydrologic model used in this study is the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and is calibrated for discharge at the watershed outlet in each watershed. Despite achieving similar calibration metrics, a majority of hydrologic projections of average annual streamflow during the 2080s were statistically different, with differences in magnitude and direction (increase or decrease) compared to historical annual streamflows. At the average monthly time-scale, a majority of the hydrologic projections varied in peak streamflow timing, peak streamflow magnitude, summer streamflows, as well as overall increases or decreases compared to the historical monthly streamflows. Snowmelt projections from the SWAT model also widely varied, both in depth and snowmelt peak timing, for all watersheds. Since a large portion of the runoff-producing regions in the western United States is snowmelt-dependent, this has large implications for the prediction of the amount and timing of streamflow in the coming century. This paper shows that hydrologic model parameterizations that give similar adequate calibration metrics can lead to statistically significant differences in hydrologic projections under climate change. The frequency of large-scale anomalous precipitation events over China has increased during 1961–2018. However, it remains challenging to understand the mechanisms associated with these anomalous events showing different spatial patterns. Here, we applied an autoencoder technique to identify large-scale anomalous precipitation events for both observations and model simulations, which were then classified into several patterns through a self-organizing map method. The synoptic behavior and atmospheric circulation background of different anomalous patterns were also analyzed using simultaneous composite analyses. Results show that occurrences of different anomalous precipitation patterns have increased significantly, except those centered in North China, Northeast China, and the Yangtze River basin. The anomalous precipitation patterns manifest various intraseasonal distributions, which are linked to zonal oscillations of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) and meridional displacements of East Asia westerly jet (EAJ). Accompanied by the westward movement of WNPSH, anticyclonic systems transport warm moist air from the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea to converge with the cold air caused by anomalous cyclones over the northwest flank of the WNPSH, leading to large-scale anomalous precipitation in these regions. Besides WNPSH, the northward and southward displacements of EAJ also favor the occurrence of anomalous precipitation events in northern and southern China, respectively. Climate change is linked with change in precipitation, evapotranspiration, and other climatological parameters, and therefore the runoff of a river basin will be affected. The Gomati River basin is the largest in Tripura. The increased settlement in the Gomati River basin and climate change may threaten the natural flow patterns that enable its diversity. This study assesses the impact of climate change on total flow from a catchment in northeast India (the Gomati River catchment). For this assessment, the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) model was used to simulate the rainfall–runoff relationship in the catchment with respect to the observed data during 2008–2009. The statistically downscaled outputs of the Hadley Centre Global Environment Model version 2 (HadGEM2-ES) general circulation model scenario was used to assess the impacts of climate change on the Gomati River basin. Future projections were developed for the 2030s, 2040s, and 2050s. Landuse landcover (LULC) and climate change have significant hydrological impacts, especially in humid tropical regions. Cautious planning and development based on early preparedness can result in LULC patterns that may improve the well-being of human beings and ecosystem. This demands significant knowledge related to the climatic and hydrological variables. In this study, the impact of future climate and LULC change of a humid tropical catchment Periyar river basin (PRB) in the Western Ghats, India, is investigated using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The study critically evaluates the individual and combined impacts of LULC and climate change on water balance components including precipitation, surface runoff, evapotranspiration, soil water storage, percolation, base flow, and lateral flow. The future LULC maps are projected to 2030, 2050, 2075, and 2100 using the past data with the help of the Cellular Automata-Markov transition matrix. LULC change indicated an increased urbanization and cropland, whereas a decreased forests and plantations in future. For future climate change impact assessment, ensemble of five global circulation models with RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios is considered. The results suggest climate change impact is dominant over LULC change in the near (2011–2040) and mid (2041–2070) future, whereas vice-versa in the far (2071–2100) future. The quantitative assessment of spatial and temporal variation in hydrological components append insights to the hydrological processes. The results can further add value to studies related to irrigation requirement, groundwater recharge, crop water demand, soil permeability and integrated water resource management. Climate change (precipitation and temperature) has significantly affected the hydrological regimes and future climate projection. Integration of climate model with physical based model is crucial for quantitative measurement of changes in surface water regime. For accurate estimation, modelling framework need finer scale resolution of climate model output. In this study, we examined the bias corrected, statistically downscale models drawn from the NASA, Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections–Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (NEX-GDDP-CMIP5) over the study region. The rainfall and temperature projection output from the INMCM-4, MRI-CGCM3 and their ensemble mean performed well over the Mahi River basin (MRB), India. In this study, the climate data integrated with the SWAT model to analyse the potential impact of climate change on the discharge of MRB. The finding indicates that in the near future (2011–2040) projection of annual average streamflow increases by 76.74% based on the INMCM-4 outputs, 25% based on the MRI-CGCM3 outputs, and 24.53% based on the ensemble mean in comparison to the baseline period (1981–2010). Further, the modelling results of mean monthly streamflow in rainy season indicated that the lowest and highest streamflow changes will be ranging from about 631.07–2718.42 m3/s as observed by INMCM-4, 491.71–2938 m3/s observed by MRI-CGCM3, 513.02–2270.18 m3/s observed by ensemble mean, in the near future. Similarly, in the summer season, the lowest level of stream flow is found to be 158.27 m3/s observed by MRI-CGCM3, 193.38 m3/s (ensemble mean) and 258.53 m3/s (INMCM-4), respectively. Additionally, the streamflow trend was assessed by Mann–Kendall and Sen's slope method at the monthly, seasonal and annual scales. The future streamflow projection represented the ascending trend observed in south west and winter monsoon, while the descending trend was observed in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon under the INMCM-4, MRI-CGCM3, and ensemble mean. Results on projected precipitation, temperature and streamflow accretion would help to develop effective adaptation measures for reducing the impacts of climate change and to work out long-term water resource management plans in the river basin. Thailand has set the 20-year National Strategy (2018–2037) towards sustainable development and building adaptability to climate change. The strategy promotes forestation and higher bioethanol energy demand. This study aims to investigate the effects of the climate and land-use changes on water balance in 2037, the end of the National Strategy, for the Mun River Basin, NE Thailand. The simulated climate dataset used in this study was ensemble means from IPCC AR5 Global Circulation Models for representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 climate scenarios. The land-use change was simulated using the Dyna-CLUE (Conversion of Land Use and its Effects) model. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to assess the water balance (considering evapotranspiration—ET, percolation—PERC, surface runoff—SURQ, and groundwater lateral flow—LATQ). The combined effects could increase monthly ET, whereas the climate change effect could outrun the land-use changes, resulting in increasing PERC. The sustainable development under the National Strategy (2018–2037) could be insignificantly affecting the water balance, whereas the "Bioethanol-Oriented" land-use scenario could increase SURQ and decline LATQ, which could intensify flooding. Climate data with high spatial and temporal resolution were of great significance for regional environmental management, such as for early response to possible predicted local climate changes and extreme weather. However, the current downscaling targets for CMIP6 climate simulations were mostly medium-resolution (MR) reanalysis data, which were still coarse for local analysis. A two-step downscaling method was proposed for 100 × resolution enhancements of general circulation model (GCM) daily temperature data in this study. First, the historical GCM outputs were 10 × downscaled to a set of dynamically predictable MR data using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN), which included both encode-decode structure and long-short skip connections. Then, using high-resolution (HR) topographic data and MR climate data as auxiliary data, the GCM data were super-resolved to a series of images with spatial resolution of 1 km. A one-step downscaling analysis combined only with HR topographic data was performed as comparison. Seven evaluation metrics were selected to evaluate the prediction accuracy, and the results showed that the overall performance of two-step downscaling method was better than one-step downscaling method. Higher Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and lower mean absolute relative error (MARE) indicated that the two-step method performed better prediction of peak and low values. It was further confirmed by accuracy evaluation on the 10% max and 10% min values of the testing dataset. The introduction of dynamically predictable MR data could provide effective detailed information during the downscaling process and improve the prediction accuracies. Finally, the projected data of four scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5) during 2015–2050 were downscaled to the study area. Kabul River Basin is one of the most significant river basins in Afghanistan from a socio-economic perspective. Since the country is located in an arid climate zone with drastically varying climatic behavior, an effective assessment of meteorological drought is very essential to managing the limited availability of water resources. For this endeavor, the outputs of three general circulation models under two representative concentration pathways (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) were used against the baseline period of 1961–1980. Different bias correction methods were applied, and the results show that the delta change method, quantile mapping method, and empirical quantile mapping all performed better for the precipitation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature datasets, respectively. The ERA5-Land datasets and WorldClim Version 2 are used to validate the bias-corrected precipitation and temperature datasets, respectively, to determine their dependability, and the results were found to be promising. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI), Deciles Index (DI), and New Drought Index (NDI) were used to assess the drought condition in the past and forecast for the future periods of the 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s. The spatial distribution of assessed drought indices was mapped using the inverse distance weighting (IDW) method. Our results revealed that moderate to extreme droughts are consistent across the entire basin. This might be because the projected annual precipitation in the river basin shows a decline of 53–65% up to the end of this century (2100), and the average annual temperature is projected to increase by 1.8 °C, 3.5 °C, and 4.8 °C, respectively, for the three future periods of the 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s. Furthermore, the results show that the drought estimated by SPI and RDI for future climate scenarios is almost the same, whereas NDI estimates frequent drought events after the 2050s. However, for moderate drought, RDI, which includes the effects of evapotranspiration, was found to be far greater than SPI under both scenarios, and NDI considering temperature and precipitation also estimates a larger number of drought years, strengthening the possibility of its occurrence in the basin. The effects of climate change have been observed in the Murrumbidgee River basin, which is one of the main river basins in the southeast region of Australia. The study area is the largest and most important agricultural production area within the Murray Darling Basin (MDB). It produces more than AUD 1.9 billion of agricultural products annually and accounts for about 46% of Australia's total agricultural production. Since Australia's economy largely depends on its natural resources, climate change adversely impacts the economy in various ways. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's fifth assessment report (IPCC, AR5), the adaptive capacity and adaptation processes have increased in Australia. The country has implemented policies and management changes in both rural and urban water systems to adapt to future drought, unexpected floods, and other climatic changes. In this study, future catchment runoff has been estimated using the hydrological model, Simplified Hydrolog (SIMHYD), which is integrated with data from three different General Circulation Models (GCMs) and future emission scenarios. Two different representative concentration pathway (RCP) emission scenarios, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, have been used to obtain downscaled future precipitation and evapotranspiration data for the period of 2016 to 2100. Modeling results from the two emission scenarios showed an anticipated warmer and drier climate for the Murrumbidgee River catchment. Runoff in the Murrumbidgee catchment is affected by various dams and weirs, which yields positive results in runoff even when the monthly rainfall trend decreases. The overall runoff simulation result indicated that the impact of climate change is short and intense. The result of the Simplified Hydrolog (SIMHYD) modeling tool used in this study under the RCP 4.5 scenario for the period 2016 to 2045 indicates a significant future impact from climate change on the volumes of runoff in the Murrumbidgee River catchment. For the same period, the climate change prediction showed a decrease in total annual rainfall within the range of 2% to 62%. This reduction in rainfall is projected to decrease river runoff in the upper catchments (e.g., Tharwa, and Yass) by 17% to 58% over the projected periods. However, the runoff trends in the lower sub-catchments (e.g., Borambola) have increased by 137% to 87% under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, respectively. This study presents an approach for modelling and mapping fluvial flooding, considering both land use/land cover (LULC) change and climate change, and applies it to the Brahmani River Basin in eastern India. Climate change projections were obtained from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), and their impacts on the hydrology of the catchment were investigated using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS software. Results reveal that changes in LULC types, specifically an increase in proportions of agricultural and built-up areas and a decrease in forest cover, as undergone between years 1985 and 2018, have increased peak discharge following a storm, thereby causing an increase in spatial extent of floods of different return periods. Moreover, downscaled climate change scenarios from two General Circulation Models were used to determine potential changes in river discharge according to two GHG emission scenarios from the latest IPCC: SSP245 and SSP585. The projections indicate that peak discharge and the spatial extent of flooded areas will increase for floods with return periods ranging from two to 100 years. This study demonstrates the important influence that changes in LULC have had on the susceptibility of the BRB to flooding, with climate change projected to further enhance the risk of flooding as the century progresses. Background: Malaria epidemics are increasing in East Africa since the 1980s, coincident with rising temperature and widening climate variability. A projected 1–3.5 °C rise in average global temperatures by 2100 could exacerbate the epidemics by modifying disease transmission thresholds. Future malaria scenarios for the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) are quantified for projected climate scenarios spanning 2006–2100. Methods: Regression relationships are established between historical (1995–2010) clinical malaria and anaemia cases and rainfall and temperature for four East African malaria hotspots. The vector autoregressive moving average processes model, VARMAX (p,q,s), is then used to forecast malaria and anaemia responses to rainfall and temperatures projected with an ensemble of eight General Circulation Models (GCMs) for climate change scenarios defined by three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5). Results: Maximum temperatures in the long rainy (March–May) and dry (June–September) seasons will likely increase by over 2.0 °C by 2070, relative to 1971–2000, under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5. Minimum temperatures (June–September) will likely increase by over 1.5–3.0 °C under RCPs 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5. The short rains (OND) will likely increase more than the long rains (MAM) by the 2050s and 2070s under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5. Historical malaria cases are positively and linearly related to the 3–6-month running means of monthly rainfall and maximum temperature. Marked variation characterizes the patterns projected for each of the three scenarios across the eight General Circulation Models, reaffirming the importance of using an ensemble of models for projections. Conclusions: The short rains (OND), wet season (MAM) temperatures and clinical malaria cases will likely increase in the Lake Victoria Basin. Climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, including malaria control interventions could reduce the projected epidemics and cases. To narrow the gap of agricultural water insufficiency in the Lam Takong River Basin, Thailand, we conducted an assessment of water availability and agricultural water demand under climate and land use changes. The water availability was estimated by SWAT, which was calibrated and validated during 2008–2012 and 2013–2018 against the observed daily discharge at the M.164 station. Measured and simulated discharges showed good agreement during calibration and validation, as indicated by values of 0.75 and 0.69 for R2 and 0.74 and 0.63 for Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency, respectively. The results of GCMs (IPSL-CM5-MR, NorESM1-M, and CanESM2) under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5 were calculated to investigate changes in rainfall and temperature during 2020–2099. The warming tendencies of future maximum and minimum temperatures were projected as 0.018 and 0.022 °C/year and 0.038 and 0.045 °C/year under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. The future rainfall was found to increase by 0.34 and 1.06 mm/year under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. As compared to the 2017 baseline, the future planted areas of rice, maize, and cassava were projected to decrease during 2020–2099, while the sugarcane plantation area was expected to increase until 2079 and then decline. The top three greatest increases in future land use area were identified as residential and built-up land (in 2099), water bodies (in 2099), and other agricultural land (in 2059), while the three largest decrease rates were paddy fields (in 2099), forest land (in 2099), and orchards (during 2059–2079). Under the increased reservoir storage and future climate and land use changes, the maximum and minimum increases in annual discharge were 1.4 (RCP 8.5) and 0.1 million m3 (RCP 4.5) during 2060–2079. The sugarcane water demand calculated by CROPWAT was solely projected to increase from baseline to 2099 under RCP 4.5, while the increase for sugarcane and cassava was found for RCP 8.5. The future unmet water demand was found to increase under RCPs 4.5 and 8.5, and the highest deficits would take place in June and March during 2020–2039 and 2040–2099, respectively. In this context, it is remarkable that the obtained results are able to capture the continued and growing imbalance between water supply and agricultural demand exacerbated by future climatic and anthropogenic land use changes. This study presents hydrological impacts of future climate change (CC) and land use/cover change (LUCC) for the Srepok River Basin (SRB) in the Vietnam's Central Highlands. The hydrology cycle of this basin was reproduced using Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) allowing an evaluation of hydrological responses to CC and LUCC. Future climate scenarios of the 2015–2100 period under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 simulated by five General Circulation Models (GCMs) and LUCC scenario in 2050 were developed. Compared to the reference scenario (1980–2005), future LUCC increases the streamflow (0.25%) and surface runoff (1.2%) and reduces the groundwater discharge (2.1%). Climate change may cause upward trends in streamflow (0.1 to 2.7%), surface runoff (0.4 to 4.3%), and evapotranspiration (0.8 to 3%), and a change in the groundwater discharge (− 1.7 to 0.1%). The combination of CC and LUCC increases the streamflow (0.2 to 2.8%), surface runoff (1.6 to 5.6%), and evapotranspiration (1.0 to 3.1%), and reduces the groundwater discharge (1.5 to 2.7%) with respect to the reference scenario. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) is one of the amplifiers of global climate change. The headwater area of the Yellow River Basin (HYRB) on the QTP is the dominant water source region for the whole Yellow River Basin. However, the sensitive responses of hydrological processes to the intensifying climate change are exerting high uncertainties to the water cycle in the HYRB. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential climate change under three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5) and their hydrological impacts in this region using the ensemble climate data from eight general circulation models (GCMs) and the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Compared to the baseline (1976–2015), the projected climate indicated a rise of 7.3–7.8% in annual precipitation, 1.3–1.9 °C in maximum air temperature, and 1.2–1.8 °C in minimum air temperature during the near future period (2020–2059), and an increment of 9.0–17.9%, 1.5–4.5 °C, and 1.3–4.5 °C in precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature, respectively, during the far future period (2060–2099). The well-simulated SWAT modeling results suggested that due to a wetter and warmer climate, annual average actual evapotranspiration (AET) would increase obviously in the future (31.9–35.3% during the near future and 33.5–54.3% during the far future), which might cause a slight decrease in soil water. Water yield would decrease by 16.5–20.1% during the near future period, implying a worsening water crisis in the future. Till the end of this century, driven by the increased precipitation, water yield would no longer continue to decrease, with a decline by 15–19.5%. Overall, this study can not only provide scientific understanding of the hydrological responses to the future climate in both semi-arid and alpine areas, but also contribute to the decision support for sustainable development of water resources and protection of eco-environment in the HYRB. In this study, the Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP3.8D) model was developed to evaluate the spatiotemporal distribution of potential groundwater recharge (GWR) in Tasuj aquifer, northwestern Iran. High-resolution future climatic data from second-generation Canadian Earth System Model (CanESM2) general circulation models (GCMs) was produced under different scenarios of Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5). The analysis of climate parameters demonstrated that under RCP2.6, climatic variation will be substantially similar to that of the observed period (1961–2005), while moderate and severe droughts are anticipated under scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively, over 2017–2030. The projection results showed that GWR will be altered by climate change, on average, from 31 mm/year at baseline to 32 (+3%), 28.5 (−8%) and 11.5 (−63%) mm/year under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. Little Ruaha catchment has been recognized for its potential to support multi-projects including irrigated schemes, urban water supply and providing significant inflow to Mtera reservoir for hydropower generation and ultimately Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant (JNHPP). Despite the potential, the catchment has experienced declining flows in the recent years. This study assessed the likely changes in streamflow due to future climate change in the Little Ruaha catchment for the period 2025-2060. General Circulation Model (GCM) datasets from ACCESS1.0, CNRM-CM5 and BCC-CSM1 models and RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 greenhouse gas concentration scenarios were selected as the representative scenarios. Impact of climate change on stream flows was assessed using the calibrated NAM hydrological model. The impact assessment results show that under the climate change scenario (2025–2060), the monthly maximum and minimum temperatures will increase in the range of 0.8 °C to 2 °C for both RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. For the case of rainfall, average annual rainfall is expected to increase by about 10% compared to the baseline. However, the inter-annual variability of rainfall for the period between 2025 and 2060 shows the decreasing trend for RCP 8.5. Summary: Uncertainty estimation of climate change impacts has been given a lot of attention in the recent literature. It is generally assumed that the major sources of uncertainty are linked to General Circulation Models (GCMs) and Greenhouse Gases Emissions Scenarios (GGES). However, other sources of uncertainty such as the choice of a downscaling method have been given less attention. This paper focuses on this issue by comparing six downscaling methods to investigate the uncertainties in quantifying the impacts of climate change on the hydrology of a Canadian (Quebec province) river basin. The downscaling methods regroup dynamical and statistical approaches, including the change factor method and a weather generator-based approach. Future (2070–2099, 2085 horizon) hydrological regimes simulated with a hydrological model are compared to the reference period (1970–1999) using the average hydrograph, annual mean discharge, peak discharge and time to peak discharge as criteria. The results show that all downscaling methods suggest temperature increases over the basin for the 2085 horizon. The regression-based statistical methods predict a larger increase in autumn and winter temperatures. Predicted changes in precipitation are not as unequivocal as those of temperatures, they vary depending on the downscaling methods and seasons. There is a general increase in winter discharge (November–April) while decreases in summer discharge are predicted by most methods. Consistently with the large predicted increases in autumn and winter temperature, regression-based statistical methods show severe increases in winter flows and considerable reductions in peak discharge. Across all variables, a large uncertainty envelope was found to be associated with the choice of a downscaling method. This envelope was compared to the envelope originating from the choice of 28 climate change projections from a combination of seven GCMs and three GGES. Both uncertainty envelopes were similar, although the latter was slightly larger. The regression-based statistical downscaling methods contributed significantly to the uncertainty envelope. Although the Urmia Lake has undergone remarkable drought conditions within the past decades mainly due to climate change, drought studies covering the entire Urmia Lake Basin and all drought aspects are lacking. The present study investigated the spatial and temporal drought conditions in the Urmia Lake Basin for the past (1988-2017) and future (2021-2050 and 2051-2080) periods using five general circulation models (GCMs) under the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) scenarios RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, and RCP 8.5. The standardized precipitation index (SPI) and standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI) were compared. The SPEI predicted more drought events than the SPI, and it seemed to be a more suitable drought index than the SPI for the basin. In general, the future periods would encounter less drought conditions in terms of significant drought trends and duration than the observed period under all scenarios, but the frequency of quarterly severe drought events in the future periods would be higher than in the observed period. Furthermore, the stations Urmia (western bank) and Tabriz and Maragheh (eastern banks) would face the highest frequency of different types of quarterly drought events in the future periods compared with the observed period. The predicted high frequencies of drought events for the future periods can intensify the current low water level situation of the Urmia Lake, which seriously threatens all types of ecosystems in the basin. A spatio-temporal analysis of representative concentration pathways (RCPs)-based projections of surface air temperatures under different combinations of global circulation models (GCMs) and RCPs for Satluj River Basin has been presented. The projections of temperature anomalies have been obtained for several meteorological stations in the basin using 16 different combinations of emission scenarios and global climate models (GCMs). For each combination, the projections of temperature anomalies have been analysed for two future time periods centred at 2030 and 2050. The results of the analysis conducted herein clearly indicate that the temperature will rise for all the future time scales with the maximum increase being projected under RCP8.5 compared to the baseline 1986–2005. However, there is large inter-model variability in the projections of temperature anomalies under different RCPs. Under RCP 8.5, the average temperature in Satluj basin is projected to rise by around 4°C by mid of the twenty-first century. The projections of temperature anomalies analysed herein could be potentially used for the evaluation of hydrological impacts of climate change in Satluj River Basin—a key basin in the Himalayan region from the view point of global warming. Reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0) is of great importance in assessing the potential impacts of climate changes on hydrological cycles and the global energy balance. The spatiotemporal change of ET0 and the drought response over Poyang Lake watershed of China from 2011 to 2100 are the main concern in this work. Based on the meteorological data and the output of the general circulation model (GCM) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), we used the Penman–Monteith formula and downscaling model to calculate the history and future ET0 in Poyang Lake watershed, respectively. Major results are drawn as follows. First, the annual average ET0 decreased during 1961–2014 and the average ET0 of the basin is high in the north and south, but low in the middle. The ET0 was most dominated by sunshine duration in the spring, summer, and fall and by relative humidity in the winter. Second, the downscaling model has a good simulation effect, and the GCM data-downscaling simulation results are significantly improved after the deviation correction. Third, under the representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios, ET0 in the Poyang Lake watershed will increase over the next three periods, with the middle future (2041–2070) as the largest increase period. The spatial distribution of ET0 is generally high in the east and low in the west. Fourth, under the RCP 8.5 scenario, the drought index (DI) of the watershed showed an increasing trend, the seasonal distribution of DI is fall>summer>spring>winter , and the Ganjiang River subbasin will be the key prevention area for future drought risks. The results can provide basic data support for the optimal management of water resources and scientific response to the impact of climate change on agricultural production in the watershed for associated policymakers and stakeholders. Climate‐driven alterations of hydro‐meteorological conditions can change river flow regimes and potentially affect the migration behaviour of fishes and the productivity of important fisheries in the Amazon basin, such as those for the continental‐scale migratory goliath catfishes (Brachyplatystoma, Pimelodidae). In this study, we investigated hydrologic responses to climate change using a hydrologic model forced with climate inputs, which integrate historical (2001–2010) observations and general circulation model (GCM) projections under the emission scenario Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5. We developed an empirical model to characterize future (2090–2099) climate‐change impacts on goliath catfish spawning migrations as a function of river flow depth dynamics at the upstream elevational limit of spawning (250 m) in headwater basins of the Amazon. The model results revealed spatially variable impacts of climate change on the catfish spawning migrations. The Marañón, Ucayali, Juruá, Purus, and Madeira basins had a predicted increase in the annual mean (3–8%) and maximum (1.1–4.9%) spawning migration rate (i.e., the fraction of fish that migrate to the spawning grounds in a day), mainly due to the lengthened rising phase of flow‐driven migratory events during wet seasons. The Caquetá‐Japurá, Putumayo‐Içá, Napo, and Blanco rivers had predicted decreases (3–7%) in the mean migration rate because of decreases in the length of the rising season of flow depth and the frequency of migratory events. The predicted timing of fish spawning migrations (quantified by the temporal centroid of migration rates) was delayed by 7–10 days in the west‐central and southwest regions and was 8 days earlier in the northwest and northcentral areas, due to changes in the onset of the rising season. We established a river depth baseline that controls the onset of goliath catfish spawning migration. This depth varies between 0.9–5.6 m across study sites. We found that the estimated depth baseline was most sensitive to uncertainties in river width and cross‐sectional channel shape. A downscaling model capable of explaining the temporal and spatial variability of regional hydroclimatic variables is essential for reliable climate change studies and impact assessments. This study proposes a novel statistical approach based on generalized hierarchical linear model (GHLM) to downscale precipitation from the outputs of general circulation models (GCMs) at multiple sites. GHLM partitions the total variance of precipitation into within- and between-site variability allowing for transferring information between sites to develop a regional downscaling model. The methodology is demonstrated by downscaling precipitation using the outputs of eight GCMs in Lake Urmia basin in northwestern Iran. Multi-model ensemble simulations are merged and bias-corrected using Bayesian model averaging and equidistant quantile mapping, respectively. The results of this study show projected declining trends in precipitation resulting in approximately 11.2% and 15.3% decrease during 2060–2080 compared to the historical period of 1985–2005 considering representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5, respectively. This study investigated the impacts of changes in land cover and climate on runoff and sediment yield in a river basin in India. Land Change Modeler was used to derive the future land cover and its changes using the Sankey diagram approach. The future climatic parameters were derived from five general circulation models for two emission scenarios with representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5. The land cover and climate change impacts on runoff and sediment yield were estimated using SWAT model. The results show important changes in land cover and indicate that urban and agricultural areas strongly influence the runoff and sediment yield. Among the land cover and climate change impacts, climate has more predominant (70%–95%) impact. Runoff and sediment yield are likely to decrease in both RCP scenarios in the future period. In this study, three representative concentration pathways (RCPs) and 15 general circulation models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 were used to assess the behaviour of precipitation (P) and surface air temperature (SAT) over part of the Songhua River Basin. The Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model linked with SAT and P was used for monthly simulation of streamflow to assess the influence of land use/land cover and climate change on the streamflow. The results suggest that, under RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, the SAT over the study area may increase in the 21st century by 1.12, 2.44 and 5.82°C, respectively. Moreover, by the middle of the 21st century, streamflow in the basin may have decreased by 19%. The decrease in streamflow may be due to changed land use conditions and water withdrawal, having critical implications for management and future planning of water resources in the basin. Drought has become one of the most serious meteorological disasters for agricultural production in many areas around the world, and the situation could be worse under the impact of climate change. To facilitate better adaptation planning, this study proposed a drought assessment framework integrating downscaling method, drought index, copula technique, and bivariate frequency analysis, and applied it to investigate the change of the drought characteristics and drought risks from the past to the future in Huang-Huai-Hai River basin (HRB), North China. Drought was firstly defined by standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) based on 1497 observed grid data from 1979 to 2004. Then, we constructed the joint distribution of drought duration and severity based on copulas to detect and quantify the drought risks. To address the effect of climate change, similar calculation process was applied to the future climate data, which was downscaled using delta change method from representative concentration pathway (RCP 8.5) of 12 general circulation models (GCMs). The study results suggested that, under climate change condition, most irrigation districts over HRB would generally experience lower frequency of drought events but with extended duration; some districts would have more serious drought, but majority would experience similar or even lower level of severity. In light of the mean joint occurrence probability, the irrigation district at the south part of Huai River basin would likely experience the highest increase of drought risks in near future (by 0.86%) and distant future (by 0.76%), while most of other districts over HRB would face low risk of serious drought risks. The obtained results offer useful information to agricultural managers or water resources authorities who are interested in the development of effective long-term adaptation strategies for drought management. The selection of general circulation models (GCMs) with high capability to represent the past and likely future climate for a specific geographical location is a crucial step to assess impacts of climate change on different sectors. This study included pool of 105 and 78 GCMs for representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5, respectively, from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project—Phase 5, applied an advanced envelope‐based selection approach to select representative GCMs for the Koshi river basin in China and Nepal at short‐term (2016–2045), mid‐century (2036–2065) and end‐of‐century (2071–2100) periods, and developed range of possible future precipitation and temperature scenarios with high resolution downscaled data (10 × 10 km2), which is the novelty contribution of the study. Considering RCP4.5, average annual precipitation is expected to increase by 0–16%, 4–23% and 4–24% in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. Using RCP8.5, equivalent predictions are 6–20%, 6–36% and 13–49% in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. Average annual temperature is expected to increase, but with higher increases during winter than in the monsoon period. Considering RCP4.5, average annual temperature is expected to increase by 1–1.4°C, 1.3–1.9°C and 1.6–2.8°C in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. Similarly, using RCP8.5, equivalent predictions are 1–1.6°C, 1.8–2.9°C and 3.1–5.6°C in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. The ensemble mean of absolute change in average precipitation and temperature projects that High Himalaya and Tibet regions are more sensitive to climate change considering precipitation and temperature, respectively. Global climate change is becoming an increasingly important issue that threatens the imperiled planet. Quantifying the impact of climate change on the streamflow has been an essential task for the proper management of water resources to mitigate this impact. This study aims to evaluate the skill of an artificial neural network (ANN) method in downscaling precipitation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature and assess the potential impacts of climate change on the streamflow in the Wabash River Basin of the Midwestern United States (U.S.) using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). A statistical downscaling technique based on an ANN method was employed to estimate precipitation and temperature at a higher resolution. The downscaled climate projections from five general circulation models (GCMs) under the three representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios (i.e., RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) for the periods of 2026–2050 and 2075–2099 as well as the historical period were incorporated into the SWAT model to assess the potential impact of climate change on the Wabash River regime. Calibration and validation of the SWAT model indicated the streamflow simulations matched the observed results very well. The ANN method successfully reproduced the observed maximum/minimum temperature and precipitation; however, bias in precipitation was observed in regard to the frequency distribution. Compared with the simulated streamflow in the historical period, the predicted streamflow based on the RCP scenarios showed an obvious decreasing trend, where the annual streamflows will be decreased by 13.00%, 17.59%, and 6.91% in the midcentury periods and 25.29%, 27.61%, and 15.04% in the late-century periods under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. Climate warming dominated the streamflow decrease under the RCP2.6 and RCP4.5 scenarios. Climate change poses water resource challenges for many already water stressed watersheds throughout the world. One such watershed is the Upper Neuse Watershed in North Carolina, which serves as a water source for the large and growing Research Triangle Park region. The aim of this study was to quantify possible changes in the watershed's water balance due to climate change. To do this, we used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model forced with different climate scenarios for baseline, mid‐century, and end‐century time periods using five different downscaled General Circulation Models. Before running these scenarios, the SWAT model was calibrated and validated using daily streamflow records within the watershed. The study results suggest that, even under a mitigation scenario, precipitation will increase by 7.7% from the baseline to mid‐century time period and by 9.8% between the baseline and end‐century time period. Over the same periods, evapotranspiration (ET) would decrease by 5.5 and 7.6%, water yield would increase by 25.1% and 33.2%, and soil water would increase by 1.4% and 1.9%. Perhaps most importantly, the model results show, under a high emission scenario, large seasonal differences with ET estimated to decrease by up to 42% and water yield to increase by up to 157% in late summer and fall. Planning for the wetter predicted future and corresponding seasonal changes will be critical for mitigating the impacts of climate change on water resources. Riparian depressional wetlands (haors) in the Upper Meghna River Basin of Bangladesh are invaluable agricultural resources. They are completely flooded between June and November and planted with Boro rice when floodwater recedes in December. However, early harvest period (April/May) floods frequently damage ripening rice. A calibrated/validated Soil and Water Assessment Tool for riparian wetland (SWATrw) model is perturbed with bias free (using an improved quantile mapping approach) climate projections from 17 general circulation models (GCMs) for the period 2031–2050. Projected mean annual rainfall increases (200–500 mm or 7–10%). However, during the harvest period lower rainfall (21–75%) and higher evapotranspiration (1–8%) reduces river discharge (5–18%) and wetland inundation (inundation fraction declines of 0.005–0.14). Flooding risk for Boro rice consequently declines (rationalized flood risk reductions of 0.02–0.12). To quantify climate change impact and difference on basin-scale river runoff under the limiting global warming thresholds of 1.5 and 2.0 ∘ C, this study examined four river basins covering a wide hydroclimatic setting. We analyzed projected climate change in four basins, quantified climate change impact on annual and seasonal runoff based on the Soil Water Assessment Tool, and estimated the uncertainty constrained by the global circulation model (GCM) structure and the representative concentration pathways (RCPs). All statistics for the two river basins (the Shiyang River, SYR, and the Chaobai River, CBR) located in northern China indicated generally warmer and wetter conditions, whereas the two river basins (the Huaihe River, HHR, and the Fujiang River, FJR) located in southern China projected less warming and were inconsistent regarding annual precipitation change. The simulated changes in annual runoff were complex; however, there was no shift in seasonal runoff pattern. The 0.5 ∘ C global warming difference resulted in 0.7 and 0.6 ∘ C warming in basins in northern and southern China, respectively. This led to a projected precipitation increase by about 2 % for the four basins and to a decrease in simulated annual runoff of 8 % and 1 % in the SYR and the HHR, respectively, but to an increase of 4 % in the CBR and the FJR. The uncertainty in projected annual temperature was dominated by the GCMs or the RCPs; however, that of precipitation was constrained mainly by the GCMs. The 0.5 ∘ C difference decreased the uncertainty in the annual precipitation projection and the annual and monthly runoff simulation.
