High Mountain Asia (HMA), with its high altitude, widely distributed snow and frozen soil, influences the climate of the northern hemisphere and even the world through thermal balance and the water vapor cycle and is also an indicator of global climate change. The influence of HMA snow cover on its surrounding areas has always been a research hotspot. Taking the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) of China as an example, this paper analyzes the relationship between winter snow depth in HMA and drought and flood in spring and summer in the YRB in the recent 40 years by using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). The results show that the influence of snow cover on drought and flood in spring is inversely different between eastern and western parts of HMA, while the effect in summer is consistent. When the snow depth is larger (smaller) in the east and smaller (larger) in the west in winter, the YRB is drier (wetter) in spring. When the overall snow depth in HMA is larger (smaller) in winter, the northern part of the middle and lower reaches of the YRB is drier (wetter) in summer. The results provide support for understanding the impact of HMA snow cover on the surrounding climate and some important indicators for drought and flood prediction in the YRB. The Dongting Lake basin, located in the middle Yangtze River region, has long been under the threat of climate change. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive analysis and research on the long-term trends and interactions among hydrometeorological factors within the region. To address this gap, this study collected data from 31 meteorological stations in the region and employed statistical analysis methods, including the non-parametric Mann–Kendall test, Sen's slope test, and cross-wavelet analysis. The results revealed significant increases in temperatures, especially in the spring season, while summer, winter, and annual rainfall also exhibited a significant increase. However, spring and autumn rainfall showed a non-significant decrease, and there was a clear decreasing trend in annual streamflow. Interestingly, evaporation demonstrated a significant increasing trend. The annual average temperature and annual runoff exhibited approximately negative correlations in the 6–10-year resonance period and positive correlations in the 4–6-year resonance period. There are significant positive resonance periods in the relationship between annual precipitation and annual runoff within the range of 0–12 years, indicating that precipitation has a substantial impact and serves as the primary source of runoff. Furthermore, there was a transition between "abundance" and "dry" periods in the annual runoff around 4 a, occurring before and after 1973 and 2005. Locally evaporated water vapor is an important source of precipitation in China. The spatiotemporal variation characteristics of the precipitation recycling ratio (ρ) in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) in 1979–2020 were calculated and analyzed, and the contribution of internal and external cycling precipitation changes to the total precipitation changes in YRB under climate change was studied. The results show that the annual average ρ in YRB is approximately 10.3%, with the highest value of 21.8% in summer, lower than 10% in spring and autumn, and the lowest in winter, with only approximately 3.5%. Over the past 40 years, the annual average ρ in YRB has shown an increasing trend, with an increased rate of 0.4%/10a, especially in summer, with an increasing rate of 1.2%/10a. In terms of spatial distribution, ρ in YRB shows an obvious difference between the eastern and western regions, with that in the upstream western region being significantly higher than that in the downstream eastern region. The annual average ρ in the upstream region was 15–35% and can reach 20–50% in summer. The annual average ρ in the downstream region is below 10%. In general, precipitation formed by advection moisture accounts for the majority of the total precipitation in YRB. From 1979 to 2020, the annual precipitation in YRB showed an increasing trend. The cumulative increase is about 47.4 mm, of which 68.9% was contributed by local evaporation, and 31.1% was contributed by external moisture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of global climate change, many studies have focused on the interannual vegetation variation trends and their response to precipitation and temperature, but ignored the effects of seasonal variability. This study explored the relationship between normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and seasonal climate elements in the Wuliangsu Lake Basin area from 1990 to 2020, and quantified the impacts of human activities on vegetation dynamics. We used Landsat series data to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of the NDVI using the trend analysis method, the Theil–Sen median, the Mann–Kendall test, and the Hurst index. Then, we used meteorological data and land use data to quantify the effects of human activities using residual analysis, and correlation methods to determine the driving forces of NDVI variations. The results showed that the NDVI changes presented obvious regional characteristics, with a decreasing trend from southeast to northwest in Wuliangsu Lake Basin. Due to global warming, the start of the growing season (SOS) is 4.3 days (2001 to 2010) and 6.8 days (2011 to 2020) earlier compared with 1990 to 2000. The end of the season (EOS) is advanced by 3.6 days (2001 to 2010), and delayed by 8.9 days (2011 to 2020). Seasonal (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) NDVIs with precipitation and temperature show spatial heterogeneity. Further, changes in grasslands and woodlands were vulnerable to climate change and human activities. Since the beginning of the 21st century, human activity was the driving force for vegetation improvement in the Dengkou, west-central, north and southwest regions, where ecological instability is weak. This finding can provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of the same type of ecological restoration projects and the construction of ecological civilization, and contribute to the regional green and sustainable development. Abstract: The nonparametric Mann–Kendall test was used to detect the trends of major hydroclimatic variables in the Tarim River Basin, the largest inland river basin in China for the period of 1960–2007. Results showed that both mean annual air temperature and precipitation experienced an increasing trend, while annual streamflow demonstrated a mixed trend of decreasing and increasing: The mountainous region upstream showed an increasing trend and the region downstream exhibited a decreasing trend. Impacts of the increased air temperature on streamflow have shown different characteristics depending on location and seasons: it has positive effect on the runoff at mountainous region due to snowmelt and glacier-melt in spring, but negative effect on the runoff at plain area due to the increase of actual evaporation in summer. In addition, human activity contributed to the declining of streamflow in the arid plain oases at downstream of the Tarim River Basin. The results obtained in this paper can be used as a reference for the planning and management of water resources to maintain the health of the river system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
