This paper presents a method to analyze and improve the set of equations constituting a rainfall‐runoff model structure based on a combination of a data assimilation algorithm and polynomial updates to the state equations. The method, which we have called "Data Assimilation Informed model Structure Improvement" (DAISI) is generic, modular, and demonstrated with an application to the GR2M model and 201 catchments in South‐East Australia. Our results show that the updated model generated with DAISI generally performed better for all metrics considered included Kling‐Gupta Efficiency, NSE on log transform flow and flow duration curve bias. In addition, the elasticity of modeled runoff to rainfall is higher in the updated model, which suggests that the structural changes could have a significant impact on climate change simulations. Finally, the DAISI diagnostic identified a reduced number of update configurations in the GR2M structure with distinct regional patterns in three sub‐regions of the modeling domain (Western Victoria, central region, and Northern New South Wales). These configurations correspond to specific polynomials of the state variables that could be used to improve equations in a revised model. Several potential improvements of DAISI are proposed including the use of additional observed variables such as actual evapotranspiration to better constrain internal model fluxes. Accurate assessment of water resources at the watershed level is crucial for effective integrated watershed management. While semi-distributed/distributed models require complex structures and large amounts of input data, conceptual models have gained attention as an alternative to watershed modeling. In this paper, the performance of the GR4J conceptual model for runoff simulation in the Gambia watershed at Simenti station is analyzed over the calibration (1981–1990) and validation period (1991–2000 and 2001–2010). The main inputs to conceptual models like GR4J are daily precipitation data and potential evapotranspiration (PET) measured from the same catchment or a nearby location. Calibration of these models is typically performed using the Nash–Sutcliffe daily efficiency with a bias penalty as the objective function. In this case, the GR4J model is calibrated using four optimization parameters. To evaluate the effectiveness of the model's runoff predictions, various statistical measures such as Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency, coefficient of determination, bias, and linear correlation coefficient are calculated. The results obtained in the Gambia watershed at Simenti station indicate satisfactory performance of the GR4J model in terms of forecast accuracy and computational efficiency. The Nash–Sutcliffe (Q) values are 0.623 and 0.711 during the calibration period (1981–1990) and the validation period (1991–2000), respectively. The average annual flow observed during the calibration period is 0.385 mm while it increases with a value of 0.603 mm during the validation period. As for the average flow simulated by the model, it is 0.142 mm during the calibration period (i.e., a delay of 0.142 mm compared to the observed flow), 0.626 mm in the validation period (i.e., an excess of 0.023 mm compared to the observed flow). However, this study is significant because it shows significant changes in all metrics in the watershed sample under different scenarios, especially the SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios over the period 2021–2100. These changes suggest a downward trend in flows, which would pose significant challenges for water management. The paper aims at simulating streamflow using Hydrologic Engineering Center Hydrological Modelling System (HEC-HMS) under different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP's) to access the impact of climate change on hydrological regime of Bhagirathi River at Tehri Dam. The input for the study is precipitation and temperature which are obtained from remote-sensing data. The temperature and precipitation data daily products are obtained from Tropical Rain Monitoring Mission (TRMM) and Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) missions and the respective future anomalies were obtained from World Bank Climate Change Knowledge Portal (CCKP). The streamflow simulation is done for RCP's 4.5 and 8.5 under the models csiro_mk3_6_0, bcc_csm1_1, ccsm4 and mri_cgcm3. The study found that the combination of remote-sensing data and HEC-HMS model has been successful in simulating streamflow in the region. The region will experience an increase in streamflow discharge under changing climate over the next coming years. The simulation also indicates that there will be a change in temporal distribution pattern of the discharge. Amidst these uncertainties, the predictions also give an insight into the planning and management of constructed or to be constructed hydraulic structures in the basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From the Rocky Mountains in the US to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico, the Colorado River is one of the most managed and monitored rivers in the world. As decreasing river flows from drought and climate change continue to impact the Colorado River Basin, the US federal government, seven US states, and Mexico have signed agreements that would reduce deliveries, including a Drought Contingency Plan (DCP), an agreement among the US states and the Bureau of Reclamation, and Minute 323 (a treaty agreement between the US and Mexico). As part of the DCP, the US Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) committed to increasing conservation efforts to augment storage in Lake Mead. This paper presents an analysis of Reclamation's Decree Accounting Reports that record water deliveries and conservation savings from 1964 to 2019. Overall, this analysis illustrates that (1) the agency has implemented significant conservation actions over the last three decades, (2) the agency has responded to increased accounting needs as dictated by national and international management agreements, (3) some actions have resulted in environmental costs, and (4) future actions could be designed to avoid environmental harms while also augmenting Lake Mead levels. As climate change continues to constrain Colorado River water supply, detailed accounting may help reveal areas for potential efficiencies or demonstrate where the greatest levels of savings have been reached while ensuring that environmental and social benefits are preserved. Over the last 100 years, humans have changed the path and personality of the Colorado River by distributing water to cities, communities, and agricultural fields to support over 40 million people. Throughout the twentieth century, the US federal government, seven US, and Mexico signed agreements enabling development of Colorado River water. By the early 21st century, as it became evident that water demands and climate change were reducing available supplies, these same governments signed agreements to reduce pressure on the river. All these agreements have, in part, been tracked by the US federal agency that manages the river, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation), through Decree Accounting Reports. Since 1964, these reports have recorded how water is or is not accounted for that might be important to the future of the river. This paper examines those reports and reveals four main findings: (1) Reclamation has implemented numerous water conservation projects, (2) they have responded to new management agreements, (3) some of their actions have impacted the environment, and (4) there are proactive ways they can reduce environmental impacts and bolster water supplies in the future. The arid endorheic basin of northwest China is characterized by rich land resources, water shortage, and a fragile ecological environment. The establishment of a credible coupling model of groundwater and surface water based on multi-source observation data is an effective means to study the change in basin water cycles and the sustainable utilization of water resources in the past and future. Based on the latest understanding of hydrogeological conditions, hydrology and water resource utilization data in the middle reaches of the Heihe River Basin (HRB), this paper constructs an up-to-date coupling model of surface water and groundwater to study the water balance change of the basin. The water resources data series under historical replay and CMIP5 climate model prediction are constructed to predict future changes in water resources. The study shows that, under the joint influence of natural conditions and human activities, the average annual recharge of groundwater in the study area from 1990 to 2020 is 17.98 × 108 m3/a, the average annual discharge is 18.62 × 108 m3/a, and the difference between recharge and discharge is −0.64 × 108 m3/a. The total groundwater storage is −19.99 × 108 m3, of which the groundwater storage from 1990 to 2001 was −17.52 × 108 m3 and from 2002 to 2020 was −2.47 × 108 m3. Abundant water from 2002 to 2020 in the basin significantly improved the loss of groundwater storage. Under the prediction of historical reappearance and the CMIP5 CNRM-CM5 model RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 pathways, the groundwater level of the Heihe River–Liyuanhe River inclined plain falls first because the HRB has just experienced a wet season and then rises according to future climate change. The groundwater level of the inclined plain east of the Heihe River and Yanchi basin decreases continuously because of the change in water cycle caused by human activities. The erosion accumulation plain is located in the groundwater discharge zone, and the water level is basically stable. Under the conditions of water resource development and utilization, the runoff of Zhengyixia hydrological station cannot meet the requirements of the "97 Water Dividing Plan" of the State Council in most years in the future, and the ecological and production water in the lower reaches of HRB cannot be effectively guaranteed. With the implementation of water-saving irrigation under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, the runoff of Zhengyixia can meet the "97 Water Diversion Plan". It is suggested to further improve the level of agricultural water savings in the middle reaches of the HRB and control the reasonable scale of cultivated land in order to reduce water consumption in the middle reaches of the HRB and implement sustainable utilization of water resources in the HRB. Water quality models survey and predict changes in the water quality parameters with the optimized monitoring costs. The Gharasou River is the primary resource of water supply for the Karkheh River Basin (KRB), the third-greatest and most productive basin in Iran. This paper reviewed the estimation of water quality of the Gharasou River by W-ANN, QUAL2K, MPSIAC, WEPP, SWAT, SRM, AWBM, HBV, SDSM, and ANN models. The results of the QUAL2K simulation showed the rapid increases of BOD, TN, and TP in the Sahra Company site. The SRM and AWBM could simulate monthly runoff. The results also showed that the SWAT model simulated monthly runoff reasonably in some studies but weakly in another. Results indicated that W-ANN could estimate accurately EC (r = 0.996) and TDS (r = 0.999). The HBV model could simulate ETa reasonably in the KRB. The MPSIAC model estimated the erosion rates of 4.47, 16.60, and 18.57 t ha−1 yr−1in the agriculture area, rangeland, and forest, respectively. The WEPP model predicted the runoff accurately especially in the slope of 25%, but under-estimated soil erosion in the slopes of 35% and 45%. SDSM and ANN models showed a significant reduction of streamflow of − 3.7 and − 9.47 m3 s−1, respectively. While these models predict + 0.58 and + 0.48 °C increases in temperature, they forecast − 0.1 and − 0.4 mm decreases in daily rainfall, respectively. This review provides a more accurate and comprehensive picture of the Gharasou River Basin circumstances using publications that modeled water quality of the Gharasou River Basin, regarded as a basin-scale or sub-basin of the KRB. Besides existing challenges to water management under scarcity in Africa, climate change has the potential to impose additional pressures on water resources. This study aims at reviewing and identifying the climate change signals presented in 61 peer reviewed papers with respect to seven largest African river basins, viz. Nile, Senegal, Volta, Niger, Congo, Zambezi and Limpopo. Thirty percent of the reviewed papers focussed on the Nile basin while only 13% reported on the Congo basin. The climate change signals were segregated into decreasing, increasing and uncertain trends. Results stated the overwhelming tendency for using unmitigated future emission pathways. The use of ensemble models superiors the individual and synthetic scenarios. While projected temperature showed robust increasing trends, rainfall dominated by uncertain trends. The hydrological impacts were assessed through 19 hydrological models with accepted considerations of land uses at 52% of the cases. Modellers managed to understand and build robust rainfall-runoff relationships in Zambezi, Limpopo, Senegal and partially in Niger but failed in Congo and Nile. Climate change impacts on runoff, stream flows and evapotranspiration should be interpreted cautiously. Further researches are recommended to incorporate the effects of human interventions (e.g. dams) and land use changes in climate change-hydrological modelling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review paper focuses on the question of what will happen to the future water resource system of Grand Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia based on the projected hydrology of the Upper Blue Nile River basin. For this, the hydrological extremes, the baseline hydrological trends, and projected hydrological extremes of the Upper Blue Nile River basin were reviewed from various published and unpublished sources. Changes in the future hydrology of the Upper Blue Nile River basin due to climate change or any other natural or manmade modification of the river basin deserve concerted attention in the future water resources system of the Grand Renaissance Dam of Ethiopia, because the water resources of the dam mainly depend on the water potential nature of the Upper Blue Nile River basin. Climate change and human activities are two important factors in the changing environment that affect the variability of the hydrological cycle and river regime in the Yalong River basin. This paper analyzed the hydrological alteration and extremes in the Yalong River basin based on multi-source satellite data, and projected the hydrological response under different future climate change scenarios using the CwatM hydrological model. The results show that: (1) The overall change in hydrological alteration at Tongzilin station was moderate during the period of 1998–2011 and severe during the period of 2012–2020. (2) Precipitation (average 781 mm/a) is the dominant factor of water cycle on a monthly scale, which can explain the temporal variability of runoff, evaporation, and terrestrial water storage, while terrestrial water storage is also simultaneously regulated by runoff and evaporation. (3) The GRACE data are comparable with regional water resource bulletins. The terrestrial water storage is mainly regulated by surface water (average 1062 × 108 m3), while the contribution of groundwater (average 298 × 108 m3) is relatively small. (4) The evaporation and runoff processes will intensify in the future due to climate warming and increasing precipitation (~10%), and terrestrial water storage will be depleted. As a result of climate change and human activities, water resources in the Xiangjiang River Basin (XRB) are subject to seasonal and regional shortages. However, previous studies have lacked assessment of the spatiotemporal evolution of water yield in the XRB at seasonal and monthly scales and quantitative analysis of the driving forces of climate change and land use on water-yield change. Quantitative evaluation of water yield in the XRB is of great significance for optimizing water-resource planning and allocation and maintaining ecological balance in the basin. In this paper, the seasonal water-yield InVEST model and modified Morris sensitivity analysis were combined to study the characteristics of monthly water yield in the XRB. Seventeen attributes were identified using the Budyko framework. The results show that: (1) the water yield of the XRB showed an increase trend from northeast to southwest from 2006 to 2020; (2) the transfer-in of unused land, grassland, woodland and farmland as well as the transfer-out of water and construction land have positive effects on the increase in water yield, and the change to construction land has the greatest impact on water yield; (3) water yield is positively correlated with NDVI and precipitation and negatively correlated with potential evapotranspiration; (4) climate change and land-use change contributed to water-yield changes of 67.08% and 32.92%, respectively. Abstract: While the number of environmental flows and water science programmes continues to grow across the globe, there remains a critical need to better balance water availability in support of human and ecological needs and to recognise the environment as a legitimate user of water. In water‐stressed areas, this recognition has resulted in friction between water users in the public and private sectors. An opportunity exists for practitioners to be on the forefront of the science determining best practices for supporting environmental water regimes. This Special Issue brings together a collection of environmental flows science and water management papers organised around three major themes: (1) method development and testing; (2) application case studies; and (3) efficacy evaluation. Contents of this Special Issue are intended to foster collaboration and broaden transferability of the information, technical tools, models and methods needed to support environmental water management programmes. The technical sophistication of methods and modelling tools, while important to the advancement of environmental water science, may come at the expense of easily interpretable outcomes that positively influence management decisions. Researchers need to be more proactive in translating the results of advanced modelling methodologies into user‐friendly tools and methods. This will allow stakeholders and water managers to proactively test alternative water allocation scenarios to help address growing human water demands in the face of droughts and changes in climatic patterns. The application of environmental flows science and water management strategies cannot be done in isolation. Implementation involves a complex decision‐making process that integrates ecological, hydrologic and social science across diverse multifaceted governance systems and requires active stakeholder involvement. Scientists and managers must strengthen partnerships at multiple scales to develop sensible science investment strategies so that collective knowledge can be translated into wise environmental water management decisions. Future water availability is threatened by changes in both climate and water demand. Water rights with differing priorities are an important foundation of demand‐side tools (e.g., buyback, water pricing, and water market) to improve water use efficiency and reduce water scarcity, especially in highly regulated river systems. This paper assesses the impact of climate change on water yields from carryover storage with dual‐priority (high/low) water rights allocation systems using a simple and rapid analytical method. The method characterizes reservoir inflows using readily available flow characteristics (annual mean and Cv). We evaluate this method against a water resource simulation model in the Goulburn River basin, Australia. In general, our analytical "dual‐priority" Gould‐Dincer model reproduces water allocation estimates from the simulation model. We further demonstrate this method across 12 Australian catchments to investigate the climate change impact on "dual‐priority" water rights yield at the catchment scale. The hydrological projections show decreasing mean annual runoff and increasing annual runoff variability, except for some catchments in northern Australia. Water yield for high‐priority water rights (HPWRs) and low‐priority water rights (LPWRs) decreases for most catchments except for some catchments in northern Australia. South Dandalup in the 2070s (RCP8.5) shows the largest percentage decrease in HPWR and LPWR yield (about −53.53% and −56.81%, respectively). Our results show that changes in mean annual inflow have a more significant influence on water yield of HPWR and LPWR than Cv. Overall, the simple method provides a rapid assessment of water yields with "dual‐priority" water rights which is applicable across multiple sites at regional or even global scale. Purpose: The Peruvian coast is known for its low water availability and high water demand, which is mainly satisfied by groundwater sources. The current study develops regionalized water scarcity characterization factors (CFs) based on the available water remaining (AWARE) method for eight selected watersheds located along the hyper-arid Peruvian coast. Furthermore, the paper proposes water scarcity CFs for groundwater in six watersheds, which are not available in current methods. Methods: The regionalization of water scarcity CFs along the Peruvian coast was based on the following: (i) national delineation of hydrological units (HUs), (b) use of primary data on water availability and demand provided by official water balance reports and national databases, (c) use of the ecological flow values recommended by national authorities, and (d) proposal of specific water scarcity CFs for groundwater. Moreover, the results of the updated CFs were compared to those from the original CFs from AWARE. A sensitivity analysis, including recalculated CFs based on future climate change scenarios, was also provided. Thereafter, water scarcity impacts for grape and avocado production available in the scientific literature were recalculated based on previous studies with the new CFs. Results and discussion: Results revealed significant differences between updated and original water scarcity CFs in both geographical and temporal (i.e., monthly) terms. Hence, updated CFs showed that all watersheds selected experience high levels of water scarcity, especially from June to October, a more realistic scenario than that showed with original water scarcity CFs when confronted to water availability values. Meanwhile, water scarcity CFs for groundwater showed intense pressure all year round for the three main sources of groundwater (i.e., Chillon, Rimac, and Lurin aquifers) that provide water to the city of Lima, whereas only one groundwater watershed showed low water scarcity (i.e., Mala-Omas aquifer). Conclusions: Updated water scarcity CFs provide a watershed-based quantification of water scarcity in the hyper-arid Peruvian coast, which we consider more realistic as compared to the original CFs. Moreover, the water scarcity CFs proposed for groundwater allow estimating the pressure over aquifers in a higher level of disaggregation, which can be used to monitor the overexploitation of groundwater sources in an area that is highly dependent on these water sources. Drought is a major natural hazard that can have devastating impacts on regional agriculture, water supply, ecological environment and social economy. Extreme events, including droughts, are expected to be severer and more frequent because of climate warming. This paper presents an analysis of observed changes and future projections of meteorological drought in the Daqing River Basin (DRB), North China, based on the modified Standardized Precipitation Index (SPImod). Observed changes of meteorological drought are analyzed based on the precipitation series of 26 meteorological stations from 1971 to 2011, and future projections are made under two representative concentration pathways (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5) from 2021 to 2050. The result shows a change from wet to dry detected in most areas of the DRB in summer, winter and annual series. The drought risk is higher under the condition of "OR" and "AND" return period during the observation period, and the high-risk regions cover a large area. The drought risk from 2021 to 2050 will increase across the basin under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, compared with which in the base period from 1971 to 2000. Most regions will be at a higher drought risk under the condition of "OR" return period, and the area with high-risk under RCP 4.5 is slightly larger than that under RCP 8.5. Under the condition of "AND" return period, the high-risk regions will cover the area from the northwest to the northeast, while the area of high-risk regions under RCP 8.5 will be larger than that under RCP 4.5. Climate change impacts on water resources and increasing demand for renewable electricity will have significant impacts on the management of hydroelectric power catchments globally. In New Zealand, where 55% of electricity currently comes from hydroelectricity generation, rainfall over the major South Island hydroelectric power catchments is expected to increase in coming decades, and the seasonality and volatility of that rainfall is expected to change. This paper uses a change factor methodology linked to a model cascade to estimate changes to hydroelectric power catchment inflows in 12 regions of New Zealand. These future river flows are then put through an all of New Zealand electricity system model to examine impacts on flows downstream of the hydroelectric power stations, lake storage, and spill in the large South Island hydroelectric power catchments. An overall 2% increase in annual hydroelectric power catchment inflows over the whole of New Zealand is projected between 2020 and 2050. Seasonal impacts are projected to be larger, with total New Zealand inflows projected to be 10% higher in winter and 6% lower in summer by 2050. Projected changes to inflows are equivalent to between -3% of current total summer New Zealand electricity generation and +5% of winter generation. The four main snow-fed hydroelectric power catchments in the Southern Alps (Pukaki, Tekapo, Clutha, and Manapouri) are predicted to get higher inflows than currently in winter, and lower inflows in summer, with a small increase in annual flows. Modelled changes to inflows and catchment management results in, on average, higher modelled lake storage levels in the snow-fed hydroelectric power catchments in the South Island, which are predicted to spend more time at full lake levels and less time at low lake levels in 2050 than in 2020. The changing inflows, combined with higher storage levels and changes in the electricity system, results in a potential doubling of modelled spill from the large South Island hydroelectric power scheme lakes by 2050. These significant seasonal changes to inflows will better match electricity demand, but the increase to annual spill levels is projected to more than offset any increases in annual inflows over the study period. Arid area is very sensitive to global warming and are extremely vulnerable to climate change. Moreover, the water resources system in the arid area is fragile and will undergo tremendous changes with climate change. Therefore, the interaction of climate and hydrology in arid area has an important impact on the formation of regional microclimate and hydrological changes. Daihai Lake is a typical closed inland lake in arid area of China, and a key area for ecological protection in North China. In this paper, WRF-Hydro model is used to simulate the climate hydrological coupling situation of Daihai Basin from 1980 to 2020, and the coupling results are verified and calibrated by meteorological statistics, runoff calculation and remote sensing analysis. Based on the synopsis of climate and hydrology in the past 40 years, the causes and future trends of the hydrological elements in Daihai Basin are analyzed. Through the analysis, it is found that the interannual variation of precipitation in Daihai Basin is sharp, with 401.75 mm as the average from 1980 to 1994; and drastic fluctuations from 1995 to 2011, with a difference of nearly 400 mm between the interannual maximum and minimum; From 2012 to 2020, the fluctuation is small. Although the interannual variation of evaporation fluctuated, it showed an upward trend with a slope of 8.855 mm/year. The annual average temperature showed an obvious upward trend with a slope of 0.040 °C/year. From 1980 to 2020, the inflow of Daihai Lake shows a downward trend; Since 2013, the runoff into the lake has tended to be flat. Climate change and human activities are the decisive factors leading to the change of water quantity in Daihai, among which human activities play a greater role. Cultivated land irrigation and industrial water use are highly correlated with the lake discharge, and these two factors have a great influence on the lake discharge. If the current agricultural and industrial water consumption does not increase, Daihai still has a lifespan of nearly 120 years. If human activities do not change and any protective measures are not taken in time, under the background of global climate change, the flow of the Daihai Lake into the lake will be reduced to zero in 2025, and the Daihai Lake will completely dry up in 2031–2033. The study of climate hydrological coupling of long time series in Daihai Basin can not only make up for the lack of runoff data, but also provide the basis for water resources management, disaster prevention and mitigation. To assess the impacts of climate change on water resources, hydrological models are the most commonly used to simulate future flows. Hydrological model calibration is typically based on historical hydrometeorological data, which may not be representative of the future climate. This paper evaluates various calibration strategies to minimize this issue. The impact of these calibration strategies is measured on 921 North American catchments using a lumped hydrological model. Five calibration strategies (warm, low rainfall, high rainfall, low-flow, and high-flow years) were investigated, each using a 5-year (noncontinuous) independent validation dataset maximizing all five studied climate anomalies. The remaining years were used as a pool of calibration years, using targeted subsets of years in multiples of five to assess the impact of the number of calibration years versus the climate anomaly of each calibration subset. Results showed large cross-catchment variability, indicating that no single calibration strategy and number of calibration years were optimal for all watersheds. However, the large number of catchments used in this study allows for some general conclusions to be drawn. For the warm-years calibration strategy, using a large number of years was the approach most likely to succeed, indicating that removing a small subset of cold years was preferable to keeping a small subset of warm years. For the other four calibration strategies, the approach most likely to succeed was the one in which about half of the years in the historical record were kept. For the warm year strategy, keeping a larger number of years for calibration ensures better model robustness to account for precipitation variability in the validation set. For the other four calibration strategies, which are mostly related to precipitation, a larger number of years had to be dropped to account for the much larger differences between wet and dry years. Assessing climate change risk to municipal water supplies is often conducted by hydrologic modeling specific to local watersheds and infrastructure to ensure that outputs are compatible with existing planning frameworks and processes. This study leverages the modeling capacity of an operational National Weather Service River Forecast Center to explore the potential impacts of future climate-driven hydrologic changes on factors important to planning at the Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities (SLC). Hydrologic modeling results for the study area align with prior research in showing that temperature changes alone will lead to earlier runoff and reduced runoff volume. The sensitivity of average annual flow to temperature varies significantly between watersheds, averaging -3.8% °F-1 and ranging from 21.8% to 26.5% flow reduction per degree Fahrenheit of warming. The largest flow reductions occur during the high water demand months of May-September. Precipitation drives hydrologic response more strongly than temperature, with each 1% precipitation change producing an average 1.9% runoff change of the same sign. This paper explores the consequences of climate change for the reliability of SLC's water supply system using scenarios that include hydrologic changes in average conditions, severe drought scenarios, and future water demand test cases. The most significant water management impacts will be earlier and reduced runoff volume, which threaten the system's ability to maintain adequate streamflow and storage to meet late-summer water demands. This paper examines specific runoffs in the catchments of the rivers Ina, Rega, Parsęta, Radew and Wieprza in the hydrological years 1981 through 2019. The magnitude of specific runoff is an indirect measure of water resources in a given region. Except for the Radew catchment, mean annual specific runoffs have diminished in all the analyzed catchments through the study period. In some or all of the catchments, runoffs from April through July have also diminished. The largest changes have been observed for June in the Ina and Parsęta catchments. Due to a changing climate, likely changes to a hydrological regime are one of the primary sources of uncertainty to consider in managing water resources. In Slovakia, a decline in the country's water resources, combined with a change in the seasonality of runoff and an increase in the extremeness of floods and droughts, represents a potential threat. The objective of the paper was to explore trends in the components of the long-term hydrological balance of various river basins to detect the impacts of changing climate conditions along the Western Carpathians. The proposed method is a comparative exploratory analysis of the hydrological balance of the selected river basins. Temporal changes in the catchments' average air temperatures, precipitation, runoff, and their differences (considered as an index of the actual evapotranspiration), were estimated for 49 years of data; two non-overlapping sub-periods (25 and 24 years) in the seven river basins were also compared. This work also aims at evaluating the applicability of gridded inputs from the CarpatClim database for modelling the hydrological balance over an extended period. The issue of transboundary river management is highly pertinent to South Asia with conflicts emerging in water resource management and utilization which indeed affect the beneficial uses of downstream states. The paper considers the situation of the Teesta river basin to assess the water unavailability driven agricultural shock, cost of loss and damage of the downstream region, identify the mutual benefits of water collaboration, and suggest potential adaptation options for water unavailability. The study found during 1995–2010, the annual mean discharge in the upper Teesta floodplain was 707 cumec, where the downstream discharge was 140 cumec and during 2005–2010 the downstream region received less than 8% of the mean annual discharge which may be attributed to reduced flow from the upstream region due to the intense operation of dams and barrage. Consequently, the water reliant 5,000 villages and 12 sub‐districts of lower Teesta basin of Bangladesh were found to be experiencing immense hydro‐socioeconomic impairment and food insecurity. The study estimates that in the Rangpur region, total loss and damage of Boro rice production is 15,08,020 metric tons during 2006–2015, and in the Nilphamri total loss and damage is estimated 9,83,054 metric tons during the same period. Here, the total computed economic loss for both the region is $564 million from 2006–15 FY, which remarkably trims down the overall agricultural production and socio‐economic situation in the lower Teesta region of Bangladesh and fuel the hydro‐economic and political tension between the close riparian. The aim of this paper is to understand the historical and future climate change situation using 15 extreme precipitation indices in the Pare watershed of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Historical period (1981–2019) and future period (2021–2050) precipitation data are used to compute extreme precipitation indices in RClimDex software. The Pare watershed was divided into 13 subwatersheds; however, the results of the study showed no significant spatial variation. This study found that majority of the precipitation extreme indices are showing decreasing trends during the historical period and most of them are statistically insignificant at 95% confidence level. Only three indices such as SDII, CWD and MRI are found significant at 0.05 level in the Pare watershed. Though not significant, the annual precipitation amount in the Pare watershed was found decreasing at the rate of 3.3 mm per year during the study period. The trend analysis over the whole watershed indicated significant decreasing trends for CWD and MRI while indicating significant increasing trend for SDII. The representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 projected the extreme precipitation indices in a very similar way. The results of the trend analysis under RCP 8.5 showed significant decreasing trend only at SW10 for the index-moderate rainfall index (MRI). Various cases of RX1DAY and RX5DAY not falling during the months of monsoon were observed in both the historical and future periods. The percentage departures of the monsoon from its annual total had increased in RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios as compared to the historical periods. The results of this climatic investigation suggest that the precipitation regime in the study area had been accompanied and also expected by overall reduction in precipitation amount, milder rainfall events, reduction in monsoon (June–September) rainfall and drier climatic conditions. With the prevalent historical scenario and future projected scenarios of the extreme precipitation indices, the water resource potential in the study area is expected to be greatly reduced, for which the authors seek the attention of various stakeholders in water and allied sectors to come together and discuss on the construction of water conservation structures so that agricultural activities can be expanded and remain sustainable. This paper presents the results of studies on water resources management strategies, under the influence of climate change, in the Zarrineh River basin, providing some 41% of the total inflow into the Lake Urmia. Climate change simulation over the period 1992–2050 was performed by downscaling of seven global circulation models. The best model was then selected for modelling the hydrological behavior of the basin using a rainfall-runoff model while an allocation model was used to evaluate future supply and demands. A system dynamics model was further utilized to investigate the sustainability of the dynamic behavior of the basin. Five suggested water resources management strategies for two future climate scenarios were investigated. Results indicated that implementation of the strategy of 40% reduction in agricultural water demand would provide higher degrees of sustainability. Based on this, the average annual inflow to Lake Urmia in the years 2021 to 2050 would be 1029.75 MCM, which is equal to 81.02% of the Lake Urmia's environmental requirement from the river's share. Climate change and its possible effects on water resources has become an increasingly near threat. Therefore, the study of these impacts in highly regulated systems and those suffering extreme events is essential to deal with them effectively. This study responds to the need for an effective method to integrate climate change projections into water planning and management analysis in order to guide the decision-making, taking into account drought risk assessments. Therefore, this document presents a general and adaptive methodology based on a modeling chain and correction processes, whose main outcomes are the impacts on future natural inflows, a drought risk indicator, and the simulation of future water storage in the water resources system (WRS). This method was applied in the Júcar River basin (JRB) due to its complexity and the multiannual drought events it suffers recurrently. The results showed a worrying decrease in future inflows, as well as a high probability (≈80 %) of being under 50 % of total capacity of the WRS in the near future. However, the uncertainty of the results was considerable from the mid-century onwards, indicating that the skill of climate projections needs to be improved in order to obtain more reliable results. Consequently, this paper also highlights the difficulties of developing this type of method, taking partial decisions to adapt them as far as possible to the basin in an attempt to obtain clearer conclusions on climate change impact assessments. In this paper, an integrated drought management scheme (IDMS) is developed for the Aharchay River Basin, located in northwestern Iran. This region is located in a semiarid region and has experienced considerable drought damage in recent years. Therefore, application of the proposed IDMS could greatly help to mitigate drought damage. The developed IDMS includes different tools and models needed for drought management. The utilized tools are classified into four groups, as follows: (1) data collection and validation, (2) rainfall-runoff prediction, (3) reservoir operation, and (4) drought analysis and monitoring. Future rainfall and runoff are projected using two computer models. Optimal reservoir operation is determined using a Bayesian stochastic genetic algorithm and Bayesian stochastic dynamic programming. These models are capable of incorporating new data of reservoir inflow and expert opinion in decision-making. For reservoir operation in drought conditions, hedging rules are also developed based on a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. The hedging rules conserve water and adjust the operation in dry periods. Different drought indexes, including the standardized precipitation, surface water supply, and Palmer drought severity indexes, in addition to the hybrid drought index, which considers the socioeconomic aspects of drought, are used for drought evaluation. The socioeconomic aspects of drought are incorporated in drought management, utilizing an optimization model for land-use planning. The water pricing as a demand management tool for drought conditions is employed to measure drought impacts and usage efficiency of the limited available water resources. Based on drought characteristics in the study region, a drought warning scheme is also developed based on the drought monitoring data. To investigate the applicability of the proposed scheme, the future conditions of the basin hydroclimatic conditions are evaluated considering climate change impacts. To integrate these tools, a decision support system (DSS) package is developed, which includes different analytical modules needed for drought monitoring and management. The results show the significant value of integrated drought management schemes to identify and investigate the impacts of drought, and reduce the socioeconomic and environmental predicaments in the study region. Semi-arid river basins often rely on reservoirs for water supply. Small reservoirs may impact on large-scale water availability both by enhancing availability in a distributed sense and by subtracting water for large downstream user communities, e.g. served by large reservoirs. Both of these impacts of small reservoirs are subject to climate change. Using a case-study on North-East Brazil, this paper shows that climate change impacts on water availability may be severe, and impacts on distributed water availability from small reservoirs may exceed impacts on centralised water availability from large reservoirs. Next, the paper shows that the effect of small reservoirs on water availability from large reservoirs may be significant, and increase both in relative and absolute sense under unfavourable climate change. This paper presents three different multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) approaches in search for the best water management solution for the Pek River catchment area (CA). The three objectives of this paper are: (1) present some outcomes of an important international project that might help improve water management in other regions worldwide; (2) show how optimal water management is addressed in a catchment that exhibits a declining water resources trend, in this case in Serbia; and (3) demonstrate that three different MCDA approaches, if all input parameters are selected properly and consistently, do not result in any significant differences in the final selection of the best solution (there are minor variations in the final relative values, but the ranking of the analyzed alternatives does not change). This paper focused on regional climate change impacts on hydro-meteorological variables in the Upper Chao Phraya River basin located in northern Thailand. The five global climate models were used with a number of 15 experiments to assess near future water resources over the period 2026-2040. The impacts of climate change were quantified in percentages relative to a retrospective period (1986- 2000). On average, the surface temperature tends to increase by 1.45, 1.48, and 1.80 °C under the lowest (RCP2.6), intermediate (RCP4.5), and highest (RCP8.5) CMIP5 greenhouse gas emission scenarios, respectively. Mathematical model called H08 was used, the coupling of three modules did a very good job on mimicking river discharge with high Nash-Sutcliffe and Index of Agreement. The projections of rainfall and its response to surface runoff and groundwater recharge exhibit relatively uneven distributions. The upper basin tends to face extremely heavy rainfall and taking place of serious flood, while the lower areas are expected to cope with drought. Based upon ensemble averages over the entire area, relative changes of -1.7% (-6.4%), -0.1% (-5.2%), and -2.0% (-9.3%) in the mean annual rainfall (groundwater recharge) are shown under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. This study included a groundwater recharge assessment indicating potential available groundwater use, which is considered to be a key resource for climate change adaptation. Based on these findings, implementing such an artificial groundwater recharge system is needed in order to harvest surplus water and making for coping with water stress in the dry season. Using Mahanadi basin as a case, the study demonstrates benefit-sharing can improve water allocation among riparian states experiencing water stress. The results show the basin having a yearly average water deficit of 5429 million cubic metres (MCM) under business-as-usual which increases to 6781 MCM under high economic growth for 2011–2050. Even after various water supply augmentation and demand management interventions and climate change-induced increased runoff, the upper riparian state continues to have a water deficit. This study investigates the dynamics of water resources in the Citarum watershed during periods of weak La Niña, normal, and weak El Niño conditions occurring sequentially. The Citarum watershed serves various purposes, being utilized not only by seven (7) districts and two (2) cities in West Java, Indonesia but also as a source of raw water for drinking in the City of Jakarta. Using a time-series analysis of surface water data, data-driven (machine learning) methods, and statistical analysis methods, spatiotemporal predictions of surface water have been made. The surface water time series data (2017–2021), obtained from in situ instruments, are used to assess water resources, predict groundwater recharge, and analyze seasonal patterns. The results indicate that surface water follows a seasonal pattern, particularly during the monsoon season, corresponding to the groundwater recharge pattern. In upstream areas, water resources exhibit an increasing trend during both weak La Nina and weak El Niño, except for Jatiluhur Dam, where a decline is observed in both seasons. In recent decades, the depletion of surface water resources within the Lake Urmia Basin (LUB), Iran, has emerged as a significant environmental concern. Both anthropogenic activities and climate change have influenced the availability and distribution of surface water resources in this area. This research endeavors to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities on surface water resources across the LUB. Various critical climatic and anthropogenic factors affecting surface water bodies, such as air temperature (AT), cropland (CL), potential evapotranspiration (PET), snow cover, precipitation, built-up areas, and groundwater salinity, were analyzed from 2000 to 2021 using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform. The JRC-Global surface water mapping layers V1.4, with a spatial resolution of 30 m, were employed to monitor surface water patterns. Additionally, the Mann–Kendall (MK) non-parametric trend test was utilized to identify statistically significant trends in the time series data. The results reveal negative correlations of −0.56, −0.89, −0.09, −0.99, and −0.79 between AT, CL, snow cover, built-up areas, and groundwater salinity with surface water resources, respectively. Conversely, positive correlations of 0.07 and 0.12 were observed between precipitation and PET and surface water resources, respectively. Notably, the findings indicate that approximately 40% of the surface water bodies in the LUB have remained permanent over the past four decades. However, there has been a loss of around 30% of permanent water resources, transitioning into seasonal water bodies, which now account for nearly 13% of the total. The results of our research also indicate that December and January are the months with the most water presence over the LUB from 1984 to 2021. This is because these months align with winter in the LUB, during which there is no water consumption for the agriculture sector. The driest months in the study area are August, September, and October, with the presence of water almost at zero percent. These months coincide with the summer and autumn seasons in the study area. Mountain glaciers are considered natural indicators of warming and a device for climatic change. In addition, it is also a solid reservoir of freshwater resources. Along with climate change, clarifying the dynamic changes of glacier in the Aksu River Basin (ARB) are important for hydrological processes. The study examined the variations in glacier area, elevation, and their reaction to climate change in the ARB between 1990 and 2022. The glacier melt on the runoff is explored from 2003 to 2020. This investigation utilized Landsat and Sentinal-2 images, ICESat, CryoSat, meteorological and hydrological data. The findings suggest that: (1) The glacier area in the ARB retreated by 309.40 km2 (9.37%, 0.29%·a−1) from 1990 to 2022. From 2003 to 2021, the ARB glacier surface elevation retreat rate of 0.38 ± 0.12 m·a−1 (0.32 ± 0.10 m w.e.a−1). Comparison with 2003–2009, the retreat rate is faster from 2010 to 2021. (2) From 1990 to 2022, the Toxkan and the Kumalak River Basin's glacier area decreases between 61.28 km2 (0.28%·a−1) and 248.13 km2 (0.30%·a−1). Additionally, the rate of glacier surface elevation declined by −0.34 ± 0.11 m·a−1, −0.42 ± 0.14 m·a−1 from 2003 to 2021. (3) The mass balance sensitivities to cold season precipitation and ablation-phase accumulated temperatures are +0.27 ± 0.08 m w.e.a−1(10%)−1 and −0.33 ± 0.10 m w.e.a−1 °C−1, respectively. The mass loss is (962.55 ± 0.57) × 106 m3 w.e.a−1, (1087.50 ± 0.68) × 106 m3 w.e.a−1 during 2003–2009, 2010–2021 respectively. Warmer ablation-phase accumulated temperatures dominate glacier retreat in the ARB. (4) Glacier meltwater accounted for 34.57% and 41.56% of the Aksu River's runoff during the ablation-phase of 2003–2009 and 2010–2020, respectively. The long-term record of ecological, limnological and climatological parameters that were documented in the Kinneret drainage basin was statistically evaluated. The dependent relations between environmental parameters and a change in climate conditions open a consequence dispute between three optional definitions: long-term instability, climate change impact and ecosystem resiliency. The Kinneret drainage basin during the Anthropocene era is marked by intensive anthropogenic involvement: Increase in population size, drainage of the wetlands and old lake Hula, agricultural development, enhancement of lake Kinneret utilization for water supply, hydrological management, fishery and recreation. In this paper, we present a study of assessing regional water resources in a highly regulated river basin, the Dee river basin in the UK. The aims of this study include: 1) to address the issue of hydrological simulations for regulated river catchments; 2) to develop a new method revealing the trends of water resources for different scenarios (e.g. dry and wet) and 3) to facilitate water resources assessment under both climate change impacts and regulations. We use the SWAT model to model the hydrological process of the river basin with carefully designed configurations to isolate the impact from the water use regulations and practice. The spatially-distributed model simulations are then analysed with the quantile regression method to reveal the spatial and temporal patterns of regional water resources. The results show that this approach excels in presenting distributed, spatially focused trend information for extremely dry and wet scenarios, which can well address the needs of practitioners and decision-makers in dealing with long-term planning and climate change impact. The representation of the management practice in the modelling process helps identify the impact from both climate change and necessary regulatory practices, and as such lays a foundation for further study on how various management practices can mitigate the impact from other sources such as those from climate change. The novelty of the study lies in three aspects: 1) it devises a new way of isolating and representing management practice in the hydrological modelling process for regulated river basins; 2) it integrates the QR technique to study spatial-temporal trends of catchment water yield in a distributed fashion, for wet and dry scenarios instead of the mean; 3) the combination of the methods are able to reveal the impacts from various sources as well as their interactions with catchment water resources. Increased population is requiring more water and changing climate is altering the hydrological cycle making the water less accessible at the time when it is required. Combining the measurement of water availability and the socioeconomic capacity towards its access gives new insights in the fields of water resources management and poverty alleviation, which ultimately address the agenda of sustainable development. This paper customizes the water poverty index (WPI) indicators to encompass the climatic extremes and social settings to analyse the water stresses to the community people and their capacity to manage the water extremes focusing on the water availability in climatic variability condition in Karnali river basin in western Nepal. The indicators of the WPI were based on the multiple aspects of water focusing to water quantity and availability. Appraisal of potential evapotranspiration (PET) is needed for estimating the agricultural water requirement and understanding hydrological processes in an arena. Therefore, aim of the paper was to estimate the PET in the upper Beas basin, situated in the Western Indian Himalaya, under future climate change scenarios (by mid-21st century). Climate data (1969–2010) of Manali, Bhuntar and Katrain were obtained from India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). Landsat data were used for mapping land use/land cover (LULC) conditions of the basin through decision tree technique. Elevation detail of the catchment area is derived from the Cartosat-1 digital elevation model (DEM). Simulations of PET were done by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The model was calibrated using the average monthly discharge data from Thalout station. The study found fluctuations in PET under different climate change scenarios. It is likely to increase in near future owing to the rise in temperature. The higher water demand can be met from the excess snowmelt water reaching the lower basin area during the cropping seasons. Based on the meteorological data from 46 stations in the Hai River Basin (HRB) from 1961-2010, the annual and seasonal variation of reference evapotranspiration was analyzed. The sensitivity coefficients combined with the detrend method were used to discuss the dominant factor affecting the reference evapotranspiration (ETo). The obtained results indicate that the annual reference evapotranspiration is dominated by the decreasing trends at the confidence level of 95% in the southern and eastern parts of the HRB. The sensitivity order of climatic variables to ETo from strong to weak is: relativity humidity, temperature, shortwave radiation and wind speed, respectively. However, comprehensively considering the sensitivity and its variation strength, the detrend analysis indicates that the decreasing trends of ETo in eastern and southern HRB may be caused mainly by the decreasing wind speed and shortwave radiation. As for the relationship between human activity and the trend of ETo, we found that ETo decreased more significantly on the plains than in the mountains. By contrast, the population density increased more considerably from 2000 to 2010 on the plains than in the mountains. Therefore, in this paper, the correlation of the spatial variation pattern between ETo and population was further analyzed. The spatial correlation coefficient between population and the trend of ETo is -0.132, while the spatial correlation coefficient between the trend of ETo and elevation, temperature, shortwave radiation and wind speed is 0.667, 0.668, 0.749 and 0.416, respectively. This suggests that human activity has a certain influence on the spatial variation of ETo, while natural factors play a decisive role in the spatial variation of reference evapotranspiration in this area. Freshwater resources in the River Thames basin in southern UK are faced with combined pressures of future population growth and climate change. River basin managers are seeking increasingly innovative methods to meet water demand whilst at the same time maintaining ecological status. Using a river network hydrochemical model modified to account for possible future climate and population, the paper assesses the impact on downstream water quality of changing the location of a major point of abstraction serving the city of Oxford. The rationale behind the hypothetical change, although entailing an increase in energy costs and capital expenditure, was that flows would be maintained along a sensitive stretch of river. Model results at a location a further 23 km downstream suggested that better water quality would arise from this change. The predicted improvements included a decrease in the annual frequency of low DO concentrations (<6 mg L−1) from 8-9 days to 2-3 days and a decrease in 90th percentile (summer) temperatures of 0.6 °C. It is believed these improvements would primarily be attributable to shortening of river residence time which curtails accelerated phytoplankton growth. The overall conclusion, of relevance both for the Thames basin and elsewhere, is that water quality in a river network can be surprisingly sensitive to the location of abstractions. Frequent drought disasters have significant impacts on socio-economic and ecosystems, and it is crucial to explore the propagation characteristics of drought for disaster prevention and mitigation. In this paper, based on 0.25° × 0.25° grid-point Meteorological hydrological and large-scale climate factor data, the start-to-start, peak-to-peak, and end-to-end drought propagation times, and the periods and rates of drought development and recovery were estimated for 11 regions in the Luanhe River Basin under stationary and non-stationary conditions. The Generalized Additive Model for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) framework was used to construct stationary and non-stationary models to capture the stationary and non-stationary drought characteristics respectively, and then the drought development and recovery patterns, and drought propagation times were assessed. The results showed that under the influence of climate factors, severe drought events occurred in most study areas, the duration of meteorological drought was prolonged by 0.1–0.6 months, and the peak intensity was increased by about 0.05. The severity of hydrological drought increased by 0.2–0.8, and the peak intensity decreased by 0.1–0.2. The rate of development and recovery of hydrological drought was accelerated by 0.1–0.2 per month. The propagation time of start-to-start was shortened by 0.2 months, and the propagation time of end-to-end was extended by 1–2 months. The exigency of the current climate crisis demands a more comprehensive approach to addressing location-specific climate impacts. In the Passaic River Basin (PRB), two bodies of research—hydroclimatic trend detection and hydrological modeling—have been conducted with the aim of revealing the basin's hydroclimate patterns as well as the hydrologic response to recent climate change. In a rather novel application of the wavelet transform tool, we sidelined the frequently used Mann–Kendal (MK) trend test, to identify the hidden monotonic trends in the inherently noisy hydroclimatic data. By this approach, the use of MK trend test directly on the raw data, whose results are almost always ambiguous and statistically insignificant in respect of precipitation data, for instance, no longer poses a challenge to the reliability of trend results. Our results showed that, whereas trends in temperature and precipitation are increasing in the PRB, streamflow trends are decreasing. Based on results from the hydrological modeling, streamflow is more sensitive to actual evapotranspiration (ET) than it is to precipitation. In periods spanning decades with sufficient water availability, energy governs actual evapotranspiration rates, rendering streamflow more sensitive to increases in precipitation. Conversely, during meteorologically stressed decades, water availability dictates actual evapotranspiration, consequently amplifying streamflow sensitivity to fluctuations in actual evapotranspiration. We found that the choice of baseline condition constitutes an important source of uncertainty in the sensitivities of streamflow to precipitation and evapotranspiration changes and should routinely be considered in any climate impact assessment. The availability of fresh water over land may become increasingly scarce under climate change, and natural and human-induced tree cover changes can further enhance or negate the water scarcity. Previous studies showed that global tree cover change can have large impacts on water availability under current climate conditions, but did not touch upon the implications of global tree cover change under climate change. Here, we study the hydrological impacts of large-scale tree cover change (climate-induced changes in combination with large-scale afforestation) in a future climate (SSP3-7.0) following an interdisciplinary approach. By combining data from five CMIP6 climate models with a future potential tree cover dataset, six Budyko models, and the UTrack moisture recycling dataset, we can disentangle the impacts of climate change and future tree cover change on evaporation, precipitation, and runoff. We quantify per grid cell and for five selected river basins (Yukon, Mississippi, Amazon, Danube, and Murray-Darling) if tree cover changes enhance or counteract the climate-driven changes in runoff due to their impact on evapotranspiration and moisture recycling. Globally averaged, the impacts of climate change and large-scale tree cover change on runoff are of similar magnitude with opposite signs. While climate change increases the global runoff, the changing tree cover reverses this effect which overall results in a limited net impact on runoff relative to the present climate and current tree cover. Nevertheless, locally the change in runoff due to tree cover change and climate change can be substantial with increases and decreases of more than 100 mmyear-1. We show that for approximately 16 % of the land surface, tree cover change can increase the water availability significantly. However, we also find that, for 14 % of the land surface, both tree cover change and climate change might decrease water availability with more than 5 mm year-1. For each of the selected catchments, the direction and magnitude of the impacts of climate change and tree cover change vary, with dominating climate change impacts in all basins except the Mississippi River basin. Our results show that ecosystem restoration projects targeting an altered tree cover should consider the corresponding hydrological impacts to limit unwanted (non-)local reductions in water availability. Spring snowpack is an important water resource in many river basins in the United States in areas where snowmelt comprises a large part of the annual runoff. Increasing temperatures will likely reduce snowpacks in the future, resulting in more winter runoff and less available water during the summer low-flow season. As part of the National Climate Change Modeling Project by the U.S. Geological Survey, distributed watershed-model output was analyzed to characterize areal extent and water-equivalent volumes of spring snowpack for a warming climate. The output from seven selected watershed models from the mountainous western United States and one model from coastal Maine in the northeastern United States shows a future of declining spring snowpack. Snow-cover area (SCA) and snow-water equivalent (SWE) were used to compare the spring snowpack for current conditions (2006) with three time periods in the future (2030, 2060, and 2090) using three Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emission scenarios published in the 2007 Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES): A2, B1, and A1B. Distributed SWE and SCA values were sorted into elevation zones in each basin. The change in spring snowpack over time was greater than the change among different emission scenarios, suggesting that, even for a globally reduced carbon emission scenario, large decreases in SWE are likely to occur. The SRES A2 scenario resulted in the greatest decrease in SWE for six of the basins, and the SRES B1 and A1B scenarios resulted in the greatest decrease in one basin each. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a comparative assessment of developmental initiatives to increase regional water supply in the Jordan River Basin using a Multi Criteria Decision Analysis technique with sensitivity analysis on criteria weights. The results indicate that the Red Sea–Dead Sea Conveyance (RSDSC) constitutes an optimal option within the context of alleviating water shortage and promoting regional cooperation. While a surface water pipeline from Turkey emerges as an attractive option when the quantity of delivered water is emphasized, the potential for out of basin water transfers are becoming increasingly less desirable with population growth, political turmoil in the region, development, and climate change challenges.
