In this paper, monthly, maximum seasonal, and maximum annual hydrometeorological (i.e., evaporation, lake water levels, and rainfall) data series from the Kariba catchment area of the Zambezi River basin, Zimbabwe, have been analyzed in order to determine appropriate probability distribution models of the underlying climatology from which the data were generated. In total, 16 probability distributions were considered and the Kolmogorov-Sminorv (KS), Anderson-Darling (AD), and chi-square (χ2) goodness-of-fit (GoF) tests were used to evaluate the best-fit probability distribution model for each hydrometeorological data series. A ranking metric that uses the test statistic from the three GoF tests was formulated and used to select the most appropriate probability distribution model capable of reproducing the statistics of the hydrometeorological data series. Results showed that, for each hydrometeorological data series, the best-fit probability distribution models were different for the different time scales, corroborating those reported in the literature. The evaporation data series was best fit by the Pearson system, the Lake Kariba water levels series was best fit by the Weibull family of probability distributions, and the rainfall series was best fit by the Weibull and the generalized Pareto probability distributions. This contribution has potential applications in such areas as simulation of precipitation concentration and distribution and water resources management, particularly in the Kariba catchment area and the larger Zambezi River basin, which is characterized by (i) nonuniform distribution of a network of hydrometeorological stations, (ii) significant data gaps in the existing observations, and (iii) apparent inherent impacts caused by climatic extreme events and their corresponding variability. West Africa plays key roles in global climate and shows one of the strongest variations in hydro-climatic conditions. As it turns out, the region appears to be underrepresented in the existing compendium of Earth science and hydrology-focused journal papers when it comes to significant discussion on terrestrial hydrology and freshwater science. This prominent gap is largely precipitated by increasing number of constraints that include lack of considerable and robust investments in gauge measurements for meteorological and hydrological applications, poor funding of research institutions and other disincentives, among other factors. In this manuscript, the challenges and problems in large-scale terrestrial hydrology-focused investigation in West Africa are reviewed. Using a dossier of some recent contributions in the field of remote sensing hydrology, this review also highlights some of the progress in terrestrial hydrology and the opportunities that exist for hydro-geodetic research in West Africa that leverage on sustained investments in satellite geodetic missions. It is noted that West Africa is still a pristine environment for hydrology-focused research and can benefit from recent advancements in sophisticated space agency programs such as the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, which undoubtedly has revolutionized terrestrial hydrology research around the world for nearly two decades. Given the poor density of gauge stations and limited ground observations, hydrological research in West Africa is expected to benefit more from independent space observations and multi-resolution data. This is because the lack of sufficient in-situ data for the parameterizations and adequate initialization of outputs from hydrological models and reanalysis data for hydrological applications results in poor representation of the West African land surface and hydrological state variables. To further improve our contemporary understanding of West Africa's terrestrial hydrology, the continued evaluation/validation of these observations and space-borne measurements is advocated. The southwestern United States is highly sensitive to drought, prompting efforts to understand and predict its hydroclimate. Oftentimes, the emphasis is on wintertime precipitation variability, yet the southwestern United States exhibits a summertime monsoon where a significant portion of annual precipitation falls through daily convection activities manifested by a midtropospheric ridge of high pressure. Here, we examine synoptic patterns of the southwestern ridge through a k-means clustering analysis and assess how these synoptic patterns translate into streamflow changes in the upper Colorado River basin. A linear perspective suggests ∼17% of upper Colorado River discharge at the Lee's Ferry, Arizona, gauge comes from summertime monsoon rains. The ridge of high pressure exhibits diversity in its intensity, structure, and position, inducing changes in moisture advection and precipitation. A ridge shifted north or east of its climatological center increases moisture and precipitation over the southwestern United States, while a ridge toward the south or northwest inhibits precipitation. A ridge east of its climatological center contributes to increased streamflow, whereas a ridge west or northwest of its climatological center decreases streamflow. Cooling in the central tropical Pacific and the Pacific meridional mode region favors an eastward shift of the ridge of high pressure corresponding to wet days. Eastern tropical Pacific warming favors a southward shift of the ridge corresponding to dry days. These results support an intermediate scale between climate forcing and summertime Colorado River discharge through changes in the intensity, structure, and position of the southwestern ridge of high pressure, integral to the U.S. Southwest hydroclimate. Recent severe droughts, extreme floods, and increasing differences between seasonal high and low flows on the Amazon River may represent a twenty-first-century increase in the amplitude of the hydrologic cycle over the Amazon Basin. These precipitation and streamflow changes may have arisen from natural ocean-atmospheric variability, deforestation within the drainage basin of the Amazon River, or anthropogenic climate change. Tree-ring reconstructions of wetseason precipitation extremes, substantiated with historical accounts of climate and river levels on the Amazon River and in northeast Brazil found in the Brazilian Digital Library, indicate that the recent river-level extremes on the Amazon may have been equaled or possibly exceeded during the preinstrumental nineteenth century. The "Forgotten Drought" of 1865 was the lowest wet-season rainfall total reconstructed with tree-rings in the eastern Amazon from 1790 to 2016 and appears to have been one of the lowest stream levels observed on the Amazon River during the historical era according to firsthand descriptions by Louis Agassiz, his Brazilian colleague Joao Martins da Silva Coutinho, and others. Heavy rains and flooding are described during most of the tree-ring-reconstructed wet extremes, including the complete inundation of "First Street" in Santarem, Brazil, in 1859 and the overtopping of the Bittencourt Bridge in Manaus, Brazil, in 1892. These extremes in the tree-ring estimates and historical observations indicate that recent high and low flow anomalies on the Amazon River may not have exceeded the natural variability of precipitation and streamflow during the nineteenth century. Changes in land cover and climate are the dominant factors that significantly impact the hydrological process. However, the impact on flood response behaviour varies spatiotemporally. This study quantitatively assessed the effects of individual and coupled changes in land cover and climate on peak and high flows in the upstream and downstream parts of the Upper Awash River basin. Two time periods were chosen for comparison: baseline (1988–2001) and evaluation (2002–2015). The Soil Water and Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to estimate the impact of these changes. The model satisfactorily simulated daily and extreme flows. The evaluation of annual maximal discharge variability between 1985 and 2015 at upstream and downstream stations showed significant positive and insignificant negative trends, respectively. However, the sub-basin's annual wet day rainfall (PRCPTOT) showed a downward trend. The annual maximal discharge–PRCPTOT relationship was significant during the baseline but later had no significance. The SWAT model showed that the main factor that affected the changes in upstream flow was the land cover change, increasing peak and high flow by 38.69% and 11.95%, respectively, compared to the baseline period. However, combined changes resulted in downstream peak and high flow reductions of 19.55% and 50.33%, respectively. As a result, changes in flood characteristics are strong functions of land cover, especially in the upstream sub-basin and land cover and climate in the downstream sub-basin. Overall, the impact of changes in the cropland-dominated basin was noticeably different. The trend analysis approach is adopted for the prediction of future climatological behavior and climate change impact on agriculture, the environment, and water resources. In this study, the innovative trend pivot analysis method (ITPAM) and trend polygon star concept method were applied for precipitation trend detection at 11 stations located in the Soan River basin (SRB), Potohar region, Pakistan. Polygon graphics of total monthly precipitation data were created and trends length and slope were calculated separately for arithmetic mean and standard deviation. As a result, the innovative methods produced useful scientific information and helped in identifying, interpreting, and calculating monthly shifts under different trend behaviors, that is, increase in some stations and decrease in others of precipitation data. This increasing and decreasing variability emerges from climate change. The risk graphs of the total monthly precipitation and monthly polygonal trends appear to show changes in the trend of meteorological data in the Potohar region of Pakistan. The monsoonal rainfall of all stations shows a complex nature of behavior, and monthly distribution is uneven. There is a decreasing trend of rainfall in high land stations of SRB with a significant change between the first dataset and the second dataset in July and August. It was examined that monsoon rainfall is increasing in lowland stations indicating a shifting pattern of monsoonal rainfall from highland to lowland areas of SRB. The increasing and decreasing trends in different periods with evidence of seasonal variations may cause irregular behavior in the water resources and agricultural sectors. Significance Statement: The monthly polygonal trends with risk graphs of total monthly precipitation data depicted a clear picture of climate change effects in the Potohar region of Pakistan. The monsoonal rainfall showed a significant decreasing trend in highland stations and an increasing trend in lowland stations, indicating a shifting pattern of monsoonal rainfall from highland to lowland areas. Summary: The Mekong River Basin in South East Asia has experienced in recent decades large inter-annual variations between large floods and severe droughts. The general perception is that climate variability has increased in the region. In this paper our aim was to examine the role of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on these recent climate variations. To achieve our aim, we analysed the influence of ENSO on precipitation (over period 1981–2005) and discharge (1910–2008) by using spatial GIS analyses and statistical methods, such as linear correlations, spectral analysis and stochastic regression models. We found that the Mekong’s hydrology was significantly influenced by ENSO, particularly in the decay year of ENSO events. The influence was strongest in the southern parts of the basin. The precipitation and discharge decreased (increased) during El Niño (La Niña) and the annual flood period was shorter (longer) during El Niño (La Niña). We found also decadal variations in the ENSO-discharge relationship. Our findings indicate high potential for developing prediction methods for ENSO induced hydrological anomalies. These findings may significantly improve the possibility of preparing for extreme hydrological events, either drought or exceptional floods, and thus potentially improve water resources management in the basin. Some teleconnection patterns characterized through various hydro‐climate indices (HCIs) have been shown to influence regional rainfall regimes over a range of time scales in Brazil. However, our current knowledge of how various HCI–rainfall relationships vary across regions in Brazil is still incomplete. In this study, simple correlation analysis is performed using sliding window sizes and lag times on the order of months to years to substantially reduce the effects of high‐frequency variability inherent in HCI and precipitation time series and reveal any lower‐frequency relationships that may exist. This analysis is applied to monthly rainfall and HCI data during the time‐span of 1961–2015. The strength and significance of each correlation were tested. HCIs considered in this analysis include those characterizing the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), those characterizing the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO), as well as the Tropical Southern Atlantic index (TSA), the Caribbean index (CAR), and several others. A cluster analysis based on the k‐medoids algorithm was also applied to explore the relationship between local factors and the distribution of HCIs exhibiting maximum correlation at each site. A 60‐month sliding window and a 12‐month lag time were found to optimize the results of the correlation. The MJO was found to have a strong and significant link to annual rainfall throughout much of eastern Brazil, while other HCIs showing strong influence in other regions include ENSO, the CAR, and the TSA. The cluster analysis revealed a more spatially homogeneous response over the Amazon River basin and the southern regions than other regions of Brazil with complex topography, where the orographic effect attenuates the influence of the main atmospheric mechanisms at a local scale. In general, the rainfall–HCI relationship could be exploited for some operational applications (e.g., a regional drought early warning system), where the strongest correlations were observed. Variability of the climate in the headwater drainage basins of the Yangtze River and Yellow River during 1961-2010 was investigated by examining four typical climatic variables: daily minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures and daily precipitation. The results indicate that the temporal trends vary among the climatic variables and the time periods examined. The increase in daily minimum temperature began later than the daily mean and maximum temperatures, but the increase rate of the former was relatively greater after 1985. The abrupt increases in precipitation that occurred near 1978 were much clearer than the three temperature variables. Four dominant periodicities (3, 7, 11, and 18-20 yr) of temperature and precipitation were identified, and these variation patterns directly determined the periodic discharge variations in the two rivers. Under climate change impacts, periodic variations in temperature and precipitation at long temporal scales were intensified after the 1980s. Comparatively, climate change more severely impacts the minimum temperature and precipitation than the maximum and mean temperatures in the study area, and the variability of daily precipitation is more complex than the three temperature variables. Overall, the headwater drainage basin of the Yellow River is more susceptible to climate change compared with the other basin. After 2008, the increase rate of temperature (especially the daily mean and minimum temperatures) became greater, and precipitation showed a downward trend in the study areas. Climate analysis at relevant time scales is important for water resources management, agricultural planning, flood risk assessment, ecological modeling and climate change adaptation. This study analyses spatiotemporal variability and trends in rainfall and temperature in Alwero watershed, western Ethiopia. Our analysis is focused on describing spatial and temporal variability of rainfall in the study area including detection of trends, with no attempt at providing meteorological explanations to any of the patterns or trends. The study is based on gridded monthly rainfall and maximum and minimum temperature data series at a resolution of 4 × 4 km which were obtained from the National Meteorological Agency of Ethiopia for the period 1983–2016. The study area is represented by 558 points (each point representing 4 × 4 km area). Mean annual rainfall of the watershed is > 1600 mm. Annual, June–September (Kiremt), March–May (Belg) rainfall totals exhibit low inter-annual variability. Annual and October-February (Bega) rainfalls show statistically significant increasing trends at p = 0.01 level. May and November rainfall show statistically significant increasing trends at p = 0.01 level. March shows statistically significant decreasing trend at p = 0.1 level. The mean annual temperature of the watershed is 25 °C with standard deviation of 0.31 °C and coefficient of variation of 0.01 °C. Mean annual minimum and maximum temperatures show statistically non-significant decreasing trends. Bega season experienced statistically significant deceasing trend in the maximum temperature at p = 0.01 level. The year-to-year variability in the mean annual minimum and maximum temperatures showed that the 2000s is cooler than the preceding decades. Unlike our expectations, annual and seasonal rainfall totals showed increasing trends while maximum and minimum temperatures showed decreasing trends. Our results suggest that local level investigations such as this one are important in developing context-specific climate change adaptation and agricultural planning, instead of coarse-scale national level analysis guiding local level decisions.
