Lately, there has been a rising trend towards integrating sustainability issues and implementing sustainable development (SD) goals into higher education, especially in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field. This paper presents the challenges of the introduction of education for sustainability in higher education institutions, analyzes how these challenges could be addressed, and records the essential principles that can guide the incorporation of SD education in higher education. At the same time, this paper advocates the concept of sustainability integration into undergraduate ICT curricula and provides indications for developing ICT curricula that integrate sustainability issues. This paper also examines the contribution of education to the environmental awareness of the students at a Greek University while it captures their perceptions regarding the necessity for the inclusion of sustainability in the ICT curricula. The results are based on the processing of two questionnaires (pre-test and post-test data) distributed during two lectures regarding sustainability at a two-week interval. The findings of the study prove that the direct effect of the educational intervention on the intention of the students to engage in sustainability is significant. Furthermore, it is observed that students show a positive attitude towards integrating sustainability issues into their ICT education. In addition, although students had a deficient level of understanding of the concept of SD goals before the intervention, they showed a significant increment in their previous knowledge regarding sustainability and the environmental impact of ICT studies. The research also reveals that the students are not satisfied with the engagement of the university towards sustainability, and they propose various awareness activities to support their engagement with sustainability issues in an inclusive manner.

In distance education both the physical separation between learner and instructor, and the use of technology create an educational environment that is characterized by learning autonomy and the learner's active involvement. Because of these, self-regulated learning constitutes an inseparable concept of distance education. This study explores the support and promotion of self-regulated learning in the educational environment of the Hellenic Open University. In particular, this paper examines how the educational material, as it is described in its institutional level of function, supports specific self-regulating strategies of learning in the curriculum provided by the Hellenic Open University. For this purpose, the study is based on literature review of distance education and self-regulated learning. Thus, the cognitive strategies of elaboration and organization, the metacognitive strategies of goal-setting, self-monitoring and self-evaluation, the resource management strategies of seeking help, seeking information and time management, as well as, the motivation are all included in the self-regulated aspects that are examined. The results of the study indicate that the self-regulated learning is considerably supported and promoted by the printed educational material at the Hellenic Open University due to its interactive pedagogical structure. However, it is pointed out that it is possible to maximize the support provided through the improvement of the present structures' function.

This paper attempts to present the current state of computer science penetration into librarianship in terms of both workplace and education issues. The shift from material libraries into digital libraries is mirrored in the corresponding shift from librarians into information scientists. New library data and metadata, as well as new automated library processes impose the need for a hybrid form of scientists, equipped with both the rich experience of traditional librarianship and the knowledge of modern techniques of information management based on information and communication technologies (ICT). In this context, the boundaries between computer scientists and information scientists are exercised in terms of research and vocational activities. The object of the computer scientist is hardware and software, which constitute the necessary background of the total information cycle, whereas the information scientist focuses on efficient ways of information organization, representation and management. The increasing job requirements of information scientists are taken into account in the formation of the upgraded educational curricula of Greek Library Science departments. An appendix of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula and career outcomes of some Library and Information Science departments is also given. (Contains 3 footnotes.)

This paper explores the differences and similarities of the three library schools educating librarians and information professionals in Greece. The structure of higher education in Greece has recently undergone major changes (2002) integrating technological institutions and universities under one umbrella that of higher education. As a result, technological institutions today are still struggling to find their identity, whilst universities are trying hard to assert their differentiation. Library schools, existing within both types of institution, provide a very good example of how these changes are affecting education processes, field work, professionals, and jobs for graduates. Although Library Schools are all categorized as higher education institutions, they enjoy different status. Library schools spread across two similar, but yet of different types of organisation within the higher education system of Greece also face the challenge of establishing the professional image of their graduates, of modernizing the curricula and of keeping up with the rapid changes demanded by their European and international counterparts. At the same time affiliations of the schools have shaped the corresponding curricula and have marked the image of the profession within the country.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report the history of the Greek Library Science (LS) education, to document proposed and current programmes of study and to evaluate the current under-graduate and post-graduate status of library studies in Greece. Design/methodology/approach – The research methodology is based on bibliographic research of papers and articles and the documentation of programmes of study of Greek schools of LS. Findings – The paper traces the history of library education in Greece with an emphasis on the suggested or implemented curricula over a period of five decades, documents the social conditions that affected the establishment of tertiary library education and proposes some changes to be implemented in schools of LS. Originality/value – The paper records and evaluates the official library programmes of study over a period of time that covers all the course of formal library education in Greece. Purpose - Greece has the highest youth unemployment rate in the European Union. Even though it is clear that persistent unemployment requires bold measures in engaging young educated Greeks in the labour market, there is no coherent policy targeting that population group, especially university students. This research paper aims to explore the idea of restructuring the internal labour market in Greek universities by expanding services and offering part-time job positions to their students. Design/methodology/approach - In assessing the feasibility of such a project a survey was conducted involving 237 undergraduate students majoring in business management and 22 administrative executives at the University of Macedonia, Greece. Findings - The survey's main findings indicate that there is a tendency to match job openings with skills supplied by students in a work-school programme focused on campus part-time jobs. Research limitations/implications - A large-scale national survey involving students from various academic disciplines and executives from different universities would result in a more informed discussion on institutions that promote youth employment. Originality/value - This study has shown that a work-study programme promoting work opportunities on campus is plausible in Greece and might have great value for key stakeholders - students and universities. Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to examine whether the accounting curriculum fits business demand. More specifically, it determines competencies that Greek companies demand from higher education[1] graduates and addresses any mismatches between the market's needs and the academic accounting/business curriculum through a survey in Greece. Design/methodology/approach -- Using a survey to reveal their perceptions' differences, the sample included 166 students, 25 lecturers/professors from a department of Accounting and Finance (Higher Education) and 155 companies. Findings -- The results provide evidence that all these groups have different perceptions of the curriculum. Practical implications -- The study suggests ways to improve the academic accounting curriculum. The purpose of this paper was to describe students' attitudes enrolled in an electronics and Electrical constructions subject while working in laboratory of electronics science. Especially, the aim of the research is the analysis of the believes, attitudes, understanding and intentions of the Electrical students of Technological Institute of Kozani, Greece in order to estimate the factors that determine the degree of understanding of the subject of electronics constructions and following this the range of its future professional use. The Students' Attitude toward Electronics and Electrical Constructions Subject (SATEECS) scale was developed in order to measure Electrical students of Technological Institutes students' attitudes towards electronics constructions subject. Important variables related to electronics and electrical constructions such as mathematics ability, student anxiety, student confidence, subject difficulty, subject value and gender continue to influence student attitudes. The methods used for the analysis of data were the implicative statistical analysis and the principal components analysis. Implications from the findings of this study are also discussed. To satisfy their ever-increasing needs, humans are constantly exerting excessive pressure upon the environment, while now more than ever, the adoption of new development practices to halt environmental degradation is becoming necessary. Graduates from all disciplines should have environmental awareness, because their decisions as future professionals may affect the environment. If, however, we assume that environmental science graduates possess environmental knowledge, it is worth investigating whether this knowledge affects their environmental attitudes. Hence, the aim of this study is to compare the environmental attitudes of students attending environmental and non-environmental studies. To this end, a comparative study on environmental attitudes was conducted between students majoring in forestry and students majoring in literature studies at one of the largest universities in Greece. That is, the environmental attitudes of students whose discipline was closely related to the environment were compared to the attitudes of students whose discipline was unrelated to the environment. The results showed that students from both disciplines had positive environmental attitudes, but forestry students exhibited a discernibly higher level of environmental awareness, which can be ascribed to their participation in environmentally relevant courses. The insights gains from this study could be particularly useful to education policymakers and curriculum practitioners, since they provide evidence for the potential of curriculum content to shape pro-environmental attitudes. Objectives: Health informatics is a well established and important multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary field that not only involves informatics but also medicine, nursing, engineering, biology and other-related subjects. The program has been organized on the basis of an inter-university approach with the participation of five Greek universities. The paper aims at providing a current description of the academic program and a preliminary evaluation of the implementation phase.Methods: The paper presents a case study of a curriculum implementation from the phase of curriculum development to the phase of implementation and evaluation. Due to the interdisciplinary character of the course appropriate procedures were undertaken to ensure that mixed backgrounds can assimilate the broad spectrum of the teaching material taught. In the first stages of the implementation international students mainly from Europe attended the course. In addition, local graduates provided an extra dimension to the multi-layered difficulties and challenges of such a course implementation.Results: The students registered in the course were from different backgrounds and disciplines. They were mainly from health sciences and engineering schools. The interdisciplinary arrangement of the course facilitated the proper exchange of thoughts, skills, and knowledge among and between students and teachers.Conclusions: The postgraduate course in health informatics at the University of Athens has now been running for more than fifteen consecutive years and is one of the first and longest standing courses in Europe. The teaching skills of the teacher in Distance Education are categorized in three main categories: organisational skills, social skills and pedagogic skills. These three categories of skills compose the role of the tutor counselor of Hellenic Open University which is to support to encourage and to evaluate the students, providing the suitable feedback and advisory in the training process. The evaluation in the educational process and particularly the evaluation of the Admissions Advisor of Hellenic Open University as factor of educational process is one of the most important activities that aims to the improvement of the tutor counselor himself and to the improvement of the educational process. The evaluation should be based on axes analyzed in criteria. Aim of this paper is to examine the opinions of postgraduate students of Hellenic Open University in the postgraduate module EKP 65 "Open and Distance Educations" referring to the assessment of the Admissions Advisor of Hellenic Open University. For the further success and improvement of the educational process, the opinions of the students should be taken into consideration during the process of the evaluation. According to this framework it is attempted to examine the opinions of postgraduate students of EKP 65 referring to the axes and the criteria on which evaluation of Admissions Advisor of Hellenic Open University should be based. At the moment primary history education in the Greek Cypriot educational system is mainly about providing substantive knowledge and promoting Greek national identity and other social goals. Debates about history education are mostly about the kind of the past that should conveyed to the students and the social aims which should be promoted through history. A recently emerged community of educators specialised in history education advocates in favour of an approach in history education which aims to develop students' historical thinking. Aim: To describe the development of an undergraduate Gerodontology course in Athens Dental School. Background: Because of demographic changes, undergraduate dental curricula should place appropriate emphasis on the oral care of the elderly. Therefore, the Athens Dental School Curriculum Committee authorised the development of a new Gerodontology course. Methods: The new course was introduced in the 10th (final) semester of undergraduate studies. Teaching responsibilities were shared amongst staff from various Dental School departments and the National Health System. The course was elective and mainly didactic, consisting of seminars within the Dental School, educational visits to hospitals and geriatric day centres and elective clinical work in the comprehensive care clinic. The students evaluated the course at the end of the semester and indicated its strengths and weaknesses from their perspective. Conclusion: The new course was generally satisfying. Based on the experience and evaluation of the first pilot year and taking into consideration the existing barriers, we plan to improve and expand educational activities, mainly including improved methods of teaching and assessment, and more clinical assignments. This work provides a correlation study of the role of the following cognitive variables on problem solving in elementary physical chemistry: scientific reasoning (level of intellectual development/developmental level), working‐memory capacity, functional mental ( M ) capacity, and disembedding ability (i.e., degree of perceptual field dependence–independence). Nine individual studies, with seven problems and with various samples of first‐year undergraduate chemistry students at the University of Ioannina, were used. The problems were open‐book, while the students were as a rule not supplied with the necessary data (facts, figures, values of constants, etc.). The results were analysed by calculating Spearman’s ρ and Pearson r correlation coefficients. In addition, the seven individual studies were combined using a quasi meta‐analysis ( n = 250). The main findings are: (1) scientific reasoning showed lack of correlation; (2) working‐memory capacity also showed weak correlation, but stronger than scientific reasoning; and (3) functional M ‐capacity and disembedding ability played a very important role. The field may thus be of paramount importance in the novel (for the students) non‐algorithmic problems used in this study. Implications of the findings are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
