The growth, XRD patterns, spectral properties, and fluorescence decays of Yb:Ca 0.28 Ba 0.72 Nb 2 O 6 (Yb:CBN) with doping concentration of 1 at.% and 5 at.% were studied. The peak absorption cross-section and the emission cross-section were calculated. Larger Stark splitting of Yb:CBN offers the prospect of the quasi-four level laser operation. The fluorescence lifetimes are 0.64 and 0.73 ms for 1 at.% and 5 at.%, respectively. The FWHM of absorption and fluorescence spectra of 5 at.% Yb:CBN are 62 and 68 nm, which are broader than other ultrashort laser media. The results prove that Yb:CBN crystal is a good candidate as an ultrashort laser medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Sm:CaNb2O6 single crystal has been grown by the Czochralski method. Its high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction, optical absorption, emission spectroscopic as well as lifetime have been studied. Thermal expansion coefficients (α), J–O parameters (Ω i ), radiative lifetime (τ rad), branching ratios (β) and stimulated emission cross-sections (σ e) were calculated. The quantum efficiency (η) was calculated to be 97%. The intense peak emission cross section at 610, 658nm were calculated to be 2.40×10−21, 2.42×10−21 cm2. These results indicate that Sm:CaNb2O6 crystal has potential use in visible laser and photonic devices area. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Crystals of Ce3+-doped (Lu x Y1−x )3Al5O12 (LuYAG) have been grown and studied by X-ray powder diffraction, emission spectroscopy, excitation spectroscopy and X-ray excited fluorescence spectroscopy. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern revealed that the as-grown LuYAG:Ce crystal possessed the garnet structure. Compared with Ce3+-doped Y3Al5O12 (YAG), the absorption bands associated with the 4f–5d transition shifted to shorter wavelengths, the emission band that originated from a transition from the lowest 5d level to the 2F ground state of the Ce3+ ions shifted to the blue, which was probably due to a larger Stokes shift of the emission, and the reduction of relative intensity of antisite defect emission in the X-ray excited fluorescence spectra revealed that introducing Lu ions into YAG could reduce the antisite defect. Abstract: Yb3+-doped (Lu0.5Y0.5)3Al5O12 (Yb:LuYAG) single crystal has been grown by the Czochralski method. The segregation coefficient of Yb3+ was studied by the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method. The crystal structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The absorption and emission spectra and fluorescence lifetime of Yb:LuYAG crystal were measured at room temperature. The spectroscopic parameters of Yb:LuYAG crystal were compared with those of Yb:YAG and Yb:LuAG crystals with the same doping level. Abstract: A Yb3+-doped CaYAlO4 laser crystal has been grown by the Czochralski technique. The segregation coefficient was measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). The cell parameters were analyzed with X-ray diffraction experiments. Color defects in Yb:CaYAlO4 have been evidenced to be similar to those in undoped CaYAlO4. The polarized absorption spectra and the fluorescence spectrum of the Yb:CaYAlO4 crystal were measured at room temperature. The fluorescence decay time of the Yb3+ ion was investigated. The results show that Yb:CaYAlO4 has potential as a laser gain medium for an ultrashort laser system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The stoichiometric laser crystal Yb3Al5O12 has been grown by the Czochralski method. The structure of the YbAG crystal has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The absorption and emission spectra of YbAG crystal at room temperature have also been studied. The absorption, emission cross-section and fluorescence lifetime have been estimated as 0.64×10−20, 1.96×10−20 cm2 and 270 μs, respectively. The spectroscopic parameters of Yb:YAG and YbAG crystal have been compared, and the results indicate that YbAG is a promising stoichiometric laser crystal. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cr4+:Yb3Al5O12 (Cr4+:YbAG) single crystal of high quality has been grown by the Czochralski method. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) experiments showed that the Cr4+:YbAG crystal had the same structure as YAG (Y3Al5O12) crystal. The data of thermal expansion and specific heat of the crystal have been measured. The thermal expansion coefficient is α=8.63×10-6/K. The specific heat is 131.8 cal/mol·K at 320.5 K. The results show that Cr4+:YbAG crystal is a promising self-Q-switched laser crystal. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

High optical quality Dy:Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (Dy:YAG) crystal has been grown by the Czochralski method. Absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra and fluorescence decay curve of Dy:YAG have been recorded at room temperature. The strongest emission of Dy:YAG crystal is near 583 nm, corresponding to the 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 13/2 transition. The Judd-Ofelt parameters Ω 2 , Ω 4 and Ω 6 were calculated to be 1.49 × 10 −20 cm 2 , 0.94 × 10 −20 cm 2 and 3.20 × 10 −20 cm 2 , respectively. The radiative transition rates, branching ratios and the emission cross sections were calculated. The fluorescence and radiative lifetimes are 0.40 ms and 1.02 ms, respectively, resulting in a quantum efficiency of 39.2%. Abstract: A laser crystal Er3+:YbVO4 has been grown by the Czochralski method with excellent quality. The rocking curve from the (004) diffraction plane of the as-grown Er3+:YbVO4 crystal was measured and the full-width at half-maximum value was found to be 19.80in. for the (004) face. The effective segregation coefficient of Er3+ was studied by X-ray fluorescence and the crystal structure was determined by means of X-ray diffraction analysis. The polarized absorption spectra and the fluorescence spectra of Er3+:YbVO4 were measured at room temperature. The spectral parameters were calculated based on the Judd–Ofelt theory, and the intensity parameters Ω 2, Ω 4 and Ω 6 are found to be 5.50×10−20, 1.96×10−20 and 2.34×10−20 cm2, respectively. The emission cross-section has been calculated by the Fuechtbauer–Ladenbury method. The spectroscopic parameters of Er3+:YbVO4 are compared with other typical laser hosts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Ho3+-doped GdScO 3 crystal was successfully grown by the edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) method. The spectroscopic properties of Ho:GdScO 3 crystal were investigated at room temperature. The peak absorption cross-sections were 0.33 × 10−20 cm2 and 1.24 × 10−20 cm2 at 1160 nm and 653 nm with full widths at half maximum of 171.7 nm and 11.5 nm. The peak emission cross-sections of 5I 7 →5I 8 and 5I 6 →5I 7 transitions for the crystal were 0.49 × 10−20 cm2 and 1.24 × 10−20 cm2, respectively. The fluorescence lifetimes of the 5I 6 and 5I 7 multiplets were measured to be 1.12 ms and 6.13 ms, respectively.
