With the increasing concern for energy security, strengthening international cooperation is regarded as one of the most crucial ways to promote the energy structure toward renewable energy. However, extant literature have seldom focused on the spillover effects of globalization on renewable energy consumption. Under this background, this paper employs the spatial econometric model to explore the impact of globalization on renewable energy consumption in the panel data of 60 countries from 1995 to 2018. The empirical results confirm the spatial dependency of renewable energy consumption among countries. More importantly, the direct effect, spillover effect, and total effect of globalization on renewable energy consumption are all significantly positive, which indicates that globalization plays an important role in promoting renewable energy consumption and being surrounded by highly globalized countries could promote local country's energy transformation toward renewable energy. Furthermore, compared with economic globalization, the roles of political and social globalization in promoting renewable energy development worldwide are more pronounced. This research provides policymakers a novel insight into understanding the role of globalization in renewable energy development and helps to promote inter-regional cooperation on renewable energy development. The benefits of small-scale renewable energy resources are restricted by a feed-in-tariff strategy that works with distribution grids only. Virtual Power Plant (VPP) aggregates diverse distributed energy resources on the demand side for efficient control, which can improve their revenue and encourage the growth of renewable energy. Based on the general Nash bargaining theory, this paper proposes a multi-VPP energy-sharing mechanism. This approach enables VPPs to increase their revenue by engaging in peer-to-peer energy transactions. First, a general Nash bargaining-based model is proposed for multi-VPPs energy sharing considering peer-to-peer energy transactions. The model is then decomposed into two subproblems: minimizing the total cost of the VPP energy-sharing alliance, and the cost allocation of peer-to-peer energy transactions. Considering the privacy protection of VPPs, the first subproblem is solved by a distributed algorithm based on the alternating direction multiplier method. In the second subproblem, due to the introduction of a bargaining factor that is positively related to each VPP's contribution to energy sharing alliance, the cost allocation better reflects their contribution. The numerical test demonstrates the proposed energy-sharing mechanism, with little computational complexity, delivers a cost distribution result that is comparable to the classical Shapley value while promoting the development of renewable energy resources. Policies targeting energy efficiency and renewable energy are sometimes viewed as more politically feasible than carbon pricing in pursuit of emission reduction goals. This paper assesses underlying drivers of energy policy development. These factors include economic, social, environmental, and institutional variables. The between estimator for panel data is an appropriate method for our focus on some exogenous variables that vary more across countries than over time. We find that larger oil reserves per capita have a negative relationship with renewable energy policy development. Education and political globalisation have strong positive relationships with both energy-efficiency and renewable-energy policy development. These results suggest that greater participation in global political groups can be an indirect approach toward energy policy development, in cases where direct and immediate policies are hard to implement. OECD countries have higher policy scores by 33 and 25 points in energy efficiency and renewable energy respectively. The increasingly serious renewable generation curtailment in many countries reflects the drawbacks of current planning approach, which separates power source planning and grid expansion planning. In addition, resources in demand side should no longer be ignored in power planning with gradually mature policies related to energy efficiency and demand response. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a novel power system planning approach and builds an integrated source-grid-load planning model at the macro level. The model considers all the available elements in source side, grid side and load side together to find an optimal development solution from the perspective of the whole power system. The effectiveness and superiority of this model is verified through the comparison among separated source-grid planning, integrated source-grid planning and integrated source-grid-load planning in the case study. Then, an optimum development path for China's power sector till 2030 worked out by the model proposed in this paper is presented. Restructuring of the electricity industry and the development of energy efficiency solutions are the two major developments of the recent power systems. Implementation strategies in the use of energy efficiency can be made by utilizing more energy-efficient equipment or increasing penetration rate of production of new sources of energy at the generating side. These new sources of energy can be renewable sources, especially wind resource and energy storage instruments such as grid-connected electric vehicles. The vehicles can be charged during the low load and discharged during peak load. In this study, wind resources and grid-connected electric vehicles are considered as an approach for energy efficiency strategies in generation expansion planning. But, because of high investment cost, great uncertainty of wind resources’ productivity and uncertainty of their supportive policies no one will invest on them without proper supportive policies in a competitive environment. So support policies for wind resource are also considered. One of the fundamental problems of supportive policies is financial support in a competitive environment. Therefore, as an innovation of the paper, grid-connected electric vehicles is used to solve the problem. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the status of renewable energy developments and hydrogen economy in the Middle East and North Africa region. This region is heavily reliant on fossil fuels for its domestic energy supply and is also considered a global energy exporter. In this regard, an overview of the current state of energy sector in the region is provided. Moreover, the region possesses great potential for renewable energy exploitation due to its climatic advantages. Therefore, the current status of renewable energy utilization within the region's various countries is reviewed by presenting several operational renewable energy-based plants and future projects for deployment of renewable power in the region. Green hydrogen is an important sustainable clean fuel, and its utilization is essential for both environmental preservation and energy security. Thus, the status of hydrogen production and utilization in the region is discussed considering the various operational systems and future hydrogen generation projects. The concept of source, system and service is also incorporated which considers the utilization of clean energy sources for sustainable hydrogen production through environmentally benign pathways. The potential deployment opportunities for the renewable hydrogen production are also discussed based on available renewable sources in the region. Moreover, this paper discusses the challenges of increasing renewable energy utilization in the region. The paper "Essentialities concerning the Environmental Policy in the European Union, 2008-2017 period" presents aspects related to the total environmental expenses for each country in the European Union, the total CO2 emissions for the fossil fuel consumption and industrial processes, the consumption of chemical substances in the European Union depending on the hazard. In many countries, a strong development of the thermal energy sector from renewable resources was a decisive key in achieving and exceeding these intermediate objectives of the member countries. This is the case, for example, in Bulgaria, Finland and Sweden, where the development was determined mainly by the types of low cost biomass. In Estonia, Italy and Portugal, the electricity sector contributed the most to exceeding the general objectives provided for these countries in their national; action plans in the field of energy from renewable sources. Abstract The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a diverse region characterized by rapid economic growth, demographic change and urbanization. The dominance of energy supply from non-renewable resources in the region means that the increasing energy demand has implications for energy security, as well as adverse local and global environmental effects. Climatic conditions in the region are favorable for renewable energy (RE) resources, especially but not only wind and solar technologies. ASEAN countries differ strongly in terms of their national policy frameworks and progress in renewable energy development; the overall target of 23% renewables by 2025 is very ambitious under current policy frameworks. This paper identifies a gap between these national policies and local governance, especially in urban areas, which requires attention to ensure future target fulfilment. By employing a new combined correlation and decomposition approach at country and city levels, we investigate the determinants of RE expansion and explore the trend drivers in ASEAN countries from 1995 to 2013. An Impact Matrix is developed to position and interpret the relative push (e.g. policy) and pull (e.g. market) impacts on RE development, and to derive policy recommendations for countries and sectors. The results highlight that urban areas should be the focus of RE policy and governance in addition to rural areas. The tremendous impact of economic growth creates a great impetus for renewable energy development, but urbanization is the second pull for renewable energy extensions. Since the two effects are located in the first quadrant of the Impact Matrix, if strategists affect these factors, they will create the most powerful incentive for renewable energy growth. This confirms that if the strategic aim is to promote renewable energy market development, through policy and governance measures, the focus should be on urban areas, non-electricity sectors and the demand side. Solar Photovoltaics (PV) is considered a highly competitive technology supporting the transition towards a low-carbon energy system. However, increased shares of its deployment have caused a set of mainly regulatory and financial challenges which require solutions. This paper identifies key research challenges for the further development and deployment of Solar PV, aiming to bridge the gap between expressed market needs and scientific research inquiries. The findings revealed a heterogeneous landscape of Research Priorities and Research Needs focused around the issues of renewable energy sources' variability, the impacts of curtailment, material (re-)use and module efficiency, synergies with the cooling/heating sector, quality criteria and standardisation, as well as new support schemes and business models. These findings can be taken up by academic institutions or technology associations to shape further directions for research. Improvement of thermal performance of a solar air heater can be obtained by enhancing the rate of heat transfer. Thermal efficiency of matrix solar air heater is higher in comparison to conventional type. Number of studies has been reported in the literature on the performance of matrix air heater with different material packing and elaborated various parameters such as design; heat transfer enhancement, flow phenomenon and pressure drop in the duct. Majority of the studies revealed an increase in the thermal efficiency for matrix collector as compared to conventional plane solar air heater. This review paper presents an extensive study of the research carried out on matrix solar air heater. Based on literature review, it is concluded that the solar air heaters performed well when packed with porous medium and this is due to the geometrical parameters of porous material. In addition double pass porous bed solar air heaters performed better than single pass. Various types of matrix materials used in the literature and correlations developed for heat transfer and friction factor by different researchers have been presented. Much attention has been devoted in this paper to portrait the development of various types of solar air heaters over the years. The merits and demerits of different models evolved by many researchers have been critically analyzed. Finding in a nut shell is that the drawbacks associated with conventional nonporous solar air heaters such as high heat loss to the ambient, decreased convective heat flow from plate to air, etc. can be overcome by the use of an effective design of porous bed solar air heater. Given that the first industrial revolution was based on Steam Engine (coal as energy source), and the second on oil and electricity, where both these revolutions are actually "high carbon" revolutions, it is logical to expect that the third industrial revolution should be based on systems of renewable energy sources (RES), in order to minimize the problems arising from climate changes and to achieve sustainable development. However, the usage of the RES technologies and daily/weekly storage of energy and their connection to smart grids is not enough for the expected third industrial revolution. The start of this revolution would require technologies that have a great potential for further development and ability to supply, at any time, the necessary energy and power to a settlement/city, as well as drinking water, meeting the peak load requirements, continuously throughout the year, and independently of external sources of energy and drinking water. This would be provided from intermittent RES energy (solar, wind, etc.) and sea or other unclean source of water as natural resources. In that context, this paper presents a radically new technological solution: Key Engine which uses only natural resources: the sun, sea and gravity, in order to continuously and simultaneously supply a consumer with energy, power and drinking water. This solution has all the essential features required to start a third industrial revolution. The basic unit of Key Engine consists of the solar thermal (ST) generator with parabolic trough collectors through which sea water flows directly, absorbing thermal energy of solar radiation. After the separation of steam from seawater, the steam drives turbines and generators and produces electricity that is delivered to Pump Storage Hydroelectric (PSH) facility with seawater, which balances the daily and seasonal surpluses and shortages of energy, thus ensuring a continuous supply of electric power and energy to a consumer. At the same time, the water that comes out of the turbine, passes through the water treatment unit and is stored in drinking water reservoir, enabling continuous supply of the same consumer with drinking water. The paper presents theoretical aspects of Key Engine, model for optimal sizing and practical formulas for the calculation of characteristic values of the system, which could be the basis for further scientific research, development and innovative solutions that would help engineers in practice for numerous and diverse applications of Key Engine. In order to verify the derived mathematical relationships and models for optimizing the Key Engine in real conditions, the case study of the island of Vis in the Adriatic Sea, Croatia, has been considered, along with total annual irradiance of 1575 kW h/m 2 a, total annual electric energy consumption of 20 GW h and drinking water consumption of 453,382 m 3 . The obtained results: power of ST generator of 52 MW, working volume of the upper reservoir of 7 hm 3 , total annual electric energy production of 62 GW h/a, and drinking water production of 480,754 m 3 /a, clearly show that the new technology can fully meet the needs of the considered consumer for energy and drinking water. As the basic idea of Key Engine relies on the use of natural resources, i.e. RES energy and sea, the paper presents only the starting solution, whereby, apart from the sun, RES can be wind, or other renewable sources, that can perform separation of vapor from seawater and thus produce drinking water, as well as energy simultanously. Also, energy storage may not be performed solely by the PSH technology, but also by any other technology that can provide seasonal balancing of energy. All this suggests that the Key Engine can be understood as an open-source for RES technology development and thus bring changes in all three aspects of sustainable development: economy, society and environment. A sustainable energy system can be treated as a development of the distributed generation concept. It meets energy demands locally from renewable energy or/and high-efficiency polygeneration production technologies, and is characterized by energy and cost efficiency, reliability, and environmental-friendliness. Distributed energy systems typically use renewable energy resources to supply all energy demands, such as heat, cooling, and electric power in an integrated way. However, it seems that too much emphasis is placed on power and associated renewable energy-based power technologies for dealing with sustainability issues in public discussion and the research community. Often, equally important thermal energy (heat and cooling) and polygeneration are ignored. Polygeneration is an energy-efficient technology for generating simultaneously heat and power as well as other energy products in a single integrated process. Energy efficiency contributes significantly to CO 2 emission reduction. This paper discusses the role of polygeneration in a distributed energy system and the contributions of polygeneration to the development of sustainable energy systems. The paper also stresses that efficient decision support tools for sustainable polygeneration systems are important to achieve sustainability. First, the joint characteristic of a polygeneration plant that defines the dependency between different energy products is reviewed. Then, typical methods for dealing with polygeneration systems are reviewed. The review attempts to highlight the complexity of polygeneration systems and potential of polygeneration systems to adjust output of different energy products. Introduction of renewable energy sources (RES) in insular areas is growing on different islands of various regions in the world and the large-scale deployment of renewables in island power systems is appealing to local attention of grid operators as a method to decrease fossil fuel consumption. Planning a grid based on renewable power plants (RPP) presents serious challenges to the normal operation of a power system, precisely on voltage and frequency stability. Despite of its inherent problems, there is a consensus that in near future the RES could supply most of local needs without depending exclusively on fossil fuels. In previous grid code compliance, wind turbines did not required services to support grid operation. Thus, in order to shift to large-scale integration of renewables, the insular grid code ought to incorporate a new set of requirements with the intention of regulating the inclusion of these services. Hence, this paper discusses grid code requirements for large-scale integration of renewables in an island context, as a new contribution to earlier studies. The current trends on grid code formulation, towards an improved integration of distributed renewable resources in island power systems, are addressed. The paper also discusses advanced grid code requirement concepts such as virtual wind inertia and synthetic inertia for improving regulation capability of wind farms and the application of energy storage systems (EES) for enhancing renewable generation integration. Development of alternative energy sources has become a necessity as fossil energy resources are declining. At the same time, energy demand is rapidly increasing, putting the world on the verge of a global energy crisis. Moreover, the extensive use of conventional energy sources is polluting the environment and causing global warming. On the other hand, wind and other renewable energy sources are viable and clean alternatives to fossil fuels. Low operating cost and extensive availability make wind one of the most advantageous and effective renewable energy sources. This paper provides an exposure to the necessity for deployment of renewable energy sources and the worldwide installed capacity of wind power as well as a review of various wind technologies in conjunction with their applications and devices of operation. The solar energy generation has grown significantly in the past years. The importance of PV penetration in power system as a major element of renewable energy source has seen it being widely used on a global scale. Despite its promising success, PV penetration presents various issues and its impact on the distribution system has to address for seamless integration in the power system. In this paper, a comprehensive overview on important issues affecting the distribution system as a result of PV penetration is presented. Pertinent issues such as voltage fluctuation, voltage rise, voltage balance, and harmonics and their effect on the system are discussed in details. The islanding issues, which are of critical importance to the stability and integrity of the system, are also thoroughly reviewed. Details on different islanding techniques – remote and local techniques and their advantage and disadvantages are shown. Renewable energy hybrid power systems have been proven through their ability to address the limitations of single renewable energy system in terms of power efficiency, stability, and reliability while operating at minimum cost. In this regards many research and practical experiences have been done. The present paper reviews the different hybrid PV–Wind renewable energy hybrid systems used for electrical power generations. Different criteria of sizing the different system components of hybrid renewable energy power plant at the most preferable logistical environmental and economical considerations have been discussed. Also, the paper discussed some of the optimization approaches which are used to compare the energy production cost and performance of different hybrid system configurations using simulation techniques. The mitigations of global energy demands, climate change and energy related greenhouse gas effects are the most important factors in the modern days. However, renewable energy is one of the alternative sources which has the capacity to mitigate all the above. Among all the renewable energy sources, solar energy is one of the most abundant and the cleanest energy source. Different laboratories of the world have achieved different solar cell efficiencies, which are also discussed in the present paper. This paper presents the global solar PV developments, per capita values, government supportive invectives and policies of the top ten solar power producing countries. This paper also presents the investments of the global solar energy among the countries. Finally, through the study, it is found that these top ten leading countries are following fulfilment of their projections, supportive tariff rates, net metering, green certificates and government incentive policies as their instruments. Facing the mounting pressures of meeting energy and environment needs and reducing its dependence for fossil fuels, China needs to make more effort to develop renewable energy. This paper attempts to use portfolio theory to optimize China's overall energy system with considering the learning curve effect of renewable energy cost and the characteristic of fossil energy cost increasing over time. It also takes into account additional factors such as environmental costs of coal consumption and various growth rates of the cumulative R&D (research and development) capacity for solar power. This research has found that the development of renewable energy in China has tremendous potential but it will not replace fossil energy in the next decades. The sensitivity analysis of this paper indicates that development of solar power is driven not only by the cumulative installed capacity but also by the cumulative R&D capacity. The main goal of this paper is to argue for the necessity and significance of studying the distributional employment impacts of renewable and new energy development (RNE). Based on the comprehensive review of the methodology and conclusions of existing literatures, this paper builds up an extended input–output model to study RNE’s distributional employment impacts on gender and personnel structure. The case study of China׳s power sector in this paper affirmed earlier doubts that RNE development will indeed aggravate the gender inequality problem and add to the level of mismatch between the structure of labor demand and supply, causing structural unemployment problems. The quantitative analysis in this paper outlined here implies that from 2011 to 2020 the development of RNE will bring about 7 million employment gains, but only 81.8% of which can be realized due to the mismatch problem. The study of China may alert other countries to be less-optimistic about RNE’s employment impacts and reaffirm the need to carry out the distributional employment impacts analysis. This paper concludes with policy suggestions such as providing suitable training and equal promotion opportunities for women, offering courses and vocational trainings to RNE-related majors, in order to reduce the structural unemployment problem and further speed up the development of RNE. Renewable energy can help to tackle energy poverty issues of the availability ofmodern energy services and the sustainability of energy supply. Based on the concept of the Energy Development Index, published by International Energy Agency, this paper builds the clean energy development index and applies the Grey incidence decisionmethod to analyze regional energy poverty issues in China. Amodel using panel data investigates the influencing factors that are governing energy poverty alleviation and the relationship between energy poverty and social development. The improved index system not only considers the access to modern energy services, but also addresses the cleanliness of energy supply and the transition to clean energy consumption for cooking. The results indicate that due to insufficient clean energy development, China's Northeast and West regions have experienced increasing energy poverty problems, while energy poverty in the Southwest region has improved considerably because of its renewable energy development. Urbanization, affordability, and renewable energy development can increase access to modern energy services, contributing to energy poverty alleviation. Energy efficiency measures and the utilisation of renewable energy sources have been consistently incorporated into the energy strategy documents of the EU Member States in various sectors. Industry, as the backbone of the European economy, is still not sufficiently addressed, since its development is almost exclusively market driven. The importance of the industrial sector for the economy is not questionable, nor is its impact on the environment. More than a quarter of all final energy consumption in Europe can be attributed to the industrial sector, representing one third of the final energy consumption of natural gas and one third of electricity use, with more than three quarters of all final energy consumption of solid fuels. The paper presents an overview of the energy efficiency development trends in Slovenian industry. To assess the development of energy efficiency, an energy efficiency index (ODEX) is applied, also highlighting some of the non-technical, structural changes. Furthermore, the future development prospects of energy-intensive industry in Slovenia are addressed in compliance with the national legislative framework and energy efficiency targets. Following the 2015 Paris Agreement and other agreements which have been signed after, sustainable energy development is becoming the major goal in many countries. EU have set the targets to reduce the annual greenhouse gas emission by 40% in 2030 and 80% for 2050 compared with 1990 levels. For achieving this ambitious energy policy, three major technological changes are available: energy savings on the demand side, efficiency improvements in the energy production, and replacement of fossil fuels by various sources of renewable energy. Also, for realization cited three major technological changes the support of the multi-disciplinary scientific knowledge is needed. Therefore, from the beginning of the 21st century, since 2002, a series of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) Conferences were founded. This paper presents an overview of published researches in special issues of leading journals dedicated to the series SDEWES Conferences, including also the papers in current special issue. The focus is on five main fields: (1) energy policy and analysis of smart energy systems; (2) energy savings in the building sector; (3) co/polygeneration - integrated heating, cooling and electricity systems and district heating; (4) biomass for energy; and (5) measurement of energo-environmental sustainability of processes and systems. Researchers are focused on the development of methods, policies and technologies for both efficient production of energy, mainly from renewable sources, and consumption in industry, buildings and transport. Undoubtedly, the researches presented in the papers in this special issue as well as in previous ones, dedicated to SDEWES conferences, will contribute to the promotion of sustainable development and thus to the achievement of the goals of the Paris Agreement. Energy subsidies can incentivise the overconsumption of energy resources and contribute to other economic or social distortions. In this paper, an ex-post analysis is presented that explores the extent to which electricity subsidy reform could have reduced Iran's energy demand during the period 1984–2017. It also quantifies the techno-economic and environmental benefits that could have been achieved through such reforms. A time-varying econometric model is linked to an energy systems optimisation model. The former estimates electricity demand under different subsidy removal scenarios, and the latter identifies the cost-optimal generation mix to meet the demand. The results of cost-optimal transition pathways under subsidy removal scenarios are compared with the real-world energy system development during the study horizon. The comparison reveals that the subsidy reform could have reduced the total cumulative electricity consumption by 22%. Renewable share in power generation could have increased from 5% to 15%. Moreover, the reform combined with a cost-optimal generation pathway would have saved $69 billion and avoided 944 million tons of CO 2 emissions. The analysis also shows that every five-year delay in subsidy removal causes about 100 million tons of additional CO 2 emissions. This paper investigates the effect of renewable energy consumption on material consumption, considering the relationship between Material Footrprint and Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and testing the assumptions of the Environmental Kuznets Curve. A STIRPAT variation is used to specify a model relating the Material Footprint to renewable energy consumption and GDP. The effect is tested for the Material Footprint of fossil fuels and for the Material Footprint of the other categories. The analysis is applied to the seven European countries with the highest proportion of renewable energy consumption. The model estimation shows that the relationship between GDP and Material Footprint follows an inverted N-shaped form, and that the renewable energy favours the reduction of the material consumption of fossil fuels. However, there is a positive effect between the renewable energy consumption and the Material Footprint of the other categories beyond fossil fuels. These results must be interpreted considering the context, as the development of renewable energy coincides with the effects of the 2008 crisis, which may distort the relation between the variables. In the context of recent debates concerning the role of nuclear energy in sustainable development, this paper provides new insights regarding the nuclear and renewable energy-economic growth nexus by considering the role of the quality of governance. The analysis focusing on ten nuclear energy consuming countries from the European Union in the period 2002–2021 revealed few results to support next energy policies. The feedback hypothesis is checked for nuclear energy, while growth hypothesis is validated for renewable energy consumption. The positive impact of renewable energy consumption on growth becomes significant when the analysis is conducted in the period 2010–2021 when nuclear energy consumption has a low and negative effect on economic growth. Abstract: Prince Edward Island (PEI) is the smallest province in Canada measuring about 5700 km2 in area with a population of around 130,000 people. Small family farm operation is part of the Island's way of life. However, the dairy industry in North America is undergoing significant structural change. Statistics show a significant decline in the small dairy farms industry, while the number of large operations has been increasing. Advantages for large operations include purchasing energy in large quantities with better price margins and the inherent economy of scale created by such breaks. One strategy for small-scale farms to become competitive is to reduce their energy-related operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions. This can be achieved through taking energy efficiency steps, reducing overall energy consumption and generating energy through renewable energy resources and technologies. This paper uses a case study of a small dairy farm in Oyster Bed Bridge, PEI to gain insight into the direct use of energy within small dairy farms. An energy audit methodology is used to determine the energy intensity of the farm as well as energy efficiency opportunities. The paper also assesses the feasibility of meeting part of the energy demand of the farm with renewable energy generation. Energy efficiency recommendations for the case study farm include lighting retrofitting and regular maintenance of refrigeration condenser units. Abstract: The global demand for energy is currently growing beyond the limits of installable generation capacity. To meet future energy demands efficiently, energy security and reliability must be improved and alternative energy sources must be investigated aggressively. An effective energy solution should be able to address long-term issues by utilizing alternative and renewable energy sources. Of the many available renewable sources of energy, solar energy is clearly a promising option as it is extensively available. Solar power, especially as it reaches more competitive levels with other energy sources in terms of cost, may serve to sustain the lives of millions of underprivileged people in developing countries. Furthermore, solar energy devices can benefit the environment and economy of developing countries. This paper illustrates the need for the utilization of alternative energy sources, evaluates the global scenario of installed generation systems, reviews technologies underlying various solar powered devices, and discusses several applications and challenges in this area. Abstract: Geothermal energy is an excellent form of renewable energy, which is continuously available for the production of electric power. At present, a very high percentage of geothermal power is generated by power systems that directly use the geofluid from a geothermal reservoir to produce electricity, such as dry steam and flashing power systems. These power plants operate at higher temperatures, typically greater than 160 °C. It appears that most of these high temperature geothermal reservoirs have already been developed and this leaves only the lower temperature resources available for the expansion and for the next generation of geothermal power plants. This paper examines the operation of a new system, the binary-flashing power plant, which may be used to harness more efficiently the available energy of geothermal resources at the lower range of resource temperatures. The paper compares the operation of the binary-flashing systems with the typical binary systems using the following substances as working fluids: normal butane, isobutane, hexane, pentane, refrigerant-114, and ammonia. It is observed that when both systems are optimized, the binary-flashing units would produce 25% more work than the typical binary units and that hexane and pentane appear to be better working fluids for these units. Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) are omnipresent in energy policy analysis. Even though IAMs can successfully handle uncertainty pertinent to energy planning problems, they render multiple variables as outputs of the modelling. Therefore, policy makers are faced with multiple energy development scenarios and goals. Specifically, technical, environmental, and economic aspects are represented by multiple criteria, which, in turn, are related to conflicting objectives. Preferences of decision makers need to be taken into account in order to facilitate effective energy planning. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) tools are relevant in aggregating diverse information and thus comparing alternative energy planning options. The paper aims at ranking European Union (EU) energy development scenarios based on several IAMs with respect to multiple criteria. By doing so, we account for uncertainty surrounding policy priorities outside the IAM. In order to follow a sustainable approach, the ranking of policy options is based on EU energy policy priorities: energy efficiency improvements, increased use of renewables, reduction in and low mitigations costs of GHG emission. The ranking of scenarios is based on the estimates rendered by the two advanced IAMs relying on different approaches, namely TIAM and WITCH. The data are fed into the three MCDM techniques: the method of weighted aggregated sum/product assessment (WASPAS), the Additive Ratio Assessment (ARAS) method, and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). As MCDM techniques allow assigning different importance to objectives, a sensitivity analysis is carried out to check the impact of perturbations in weights upon the final ranking. The rankings provided for the scenarios by different MCDM techniques diverge, first of all, due to the underlying assumptions of IAMs. Results of the analysis provide valuable insights in integrated application of both IAMs and MCDM models for developing energy policy scenarios and decision making in energy sector. Hydrogen (H 2) as a versatile and green fuel can be produced and stored in liquid form using sustainable energy sources through innovative methods. In this paper, a novel optimal hybrid structure is proposed for hydrogen production and storage with net-zero CO 2 emissions. A high-temperature fuel cell is utilized to reduce CO 2 emissions and supply the heat and power needed to produce and liquefy hydrogen. The hybrid configuration employs an electro-thermochemical unit for hydrogen production, molten carbonate fuel cells, a hydrogen liquefaction process, and a biogas upgrading by water scrubbing. A robust combination of meta-heuristic algorithms and artificial intelligence is developed to optimize the investment return period and energy/exergy efficiencies. The fuzzy Bellman-Zadeh, LINMAP, and TOPSIS techniques are also used to make decisions in multi-objective optimization. This innovative configuration generates 108 kmol/h liquid hydrogen, 18.88 MW power, 54 kmol/h oxygen, and 3258 kmol/h hot water. Pinch, sensitivity, exergy, and economic assessments are implemented to evaluate the performance of the hybrid structure. The thermal and exergy efficiencies of the proposed configuration are obtained to be 78.21 % and 64.83 %, respectively. The greatest portions of destructed exergy are resulted from the fuel cells-gas turbine hybrid system (63.63 %), electro-thermochemical unit (25.96 %), and biogas upgrading technology (6.23 %). The returns period on investment, the prime price of electricity, and the net benefit are computed as 4.854 years, 0.0420 US$/kWh, and 15.73 million US$/years, respectively, based on the energy potentials of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Microalgae, characterized by high productivity and high oil content, are likely to become the focus of clean renewable energy development. However, there are many studies on the growth characteristics and utilization of microalgae in the existing literature, and there is still a lack of further research on the comprehensive prediction of the potential distribution of microalgae. Therefore, this paper uses the mathematical model of microalgae growth to calculate the annual average yield of potential microalgae in each region of the world according to the global uncultivated land and meteorological data, and then predicts the potential distribution of global microalgae biomass energy. This study evaluated the regions with high potential of microalgal biomass energy in the world, which could provide a reference for the development of microalgal biomass energy and the site selection of microalgal cultivation plants in the future. Meanwhile, the global potential biomass is estimated to be 1.985 × 1011 tonnes, which is equivalent to 7.87 × 1010 tonnes standard coal or 5.51 × 1010 tonnes standard oil. According to the global energy consumption, it is 4.14 times of the global primary energy consumption in 2021. Abstract: The quality of life and safeness of the present and future generations are strongly intertwined with the availability of energy sources and the sustainability of the energy infrastructure. Energy consumption in developed countries grows at a rate of approximately 1% per year, and that of developing countries, 5% per year (Muneer et al., 2005 ). Present reserves of oil and natural gas can only cover consumption at this rate for the next 50 years in the case of oil, and for the next 70 years in the case of natural gas. Therefore, one of the fundamental priorities for a country such as Algeria is to use several renewable energies (RE) sources and environmentally friendly energy conversion technologies. Algeria is endowed with large reserves of energy sources, mainly hydrocarbons and a considerable potential for the utilisation of RE sources especially with respect to solar energy. Algeria has the potential to be one of the major contributors in solar energy and become a role model to other countries in the world. RE are now one of the major elements of Algeria''s energy policy and in view of boosting the national effort in terms of RE beyond 2011, Algeria has developed a national programme for the period 2011–2030 to promote concrete actions in the fields of energy efficiency and RE in line with the approach adopted by the government on February 3, 2011. Besides, it confirms Algerian''s ambition to become an international hub for industrial and energy production and exportation in the solar sector. With this in mind, along with the environmental responsibility issues, public awareness gradually increased over the last seven years and alternative energy resources have become a new area of interest. As a tangible target, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) strategic plan aims to reach a 40% share of RE (mainly solar) in electric energy production by 2030. The various future projects are all factors that will undoubtedly give Algeria an important role in the implementation of RE technology in North Africa, the capacity for providing sustainable supply of cost-effective electricity from RE sources for the needs of the population, and the possibility of even exporting 10,000MW to neighbouring and European market. Chinese energy consumption has been dominated by coal for decades, but this needs to change to protect the environment and mitigate anthropogenic climate change. Renewable energy development is needed to fulfil the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) for the post-2020 period, as stated on the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. This paper reviews the potential of renewable energy in China and how it could be utilised to meet the INDC goals. A business-as-usual case and eight alternative scenarios with 40% renewable electricity are explored using the EnergyPLAN model to visualise out to the year 2030. Five criteria (total cost, total capacity, excess electricity, CO2 emissions, and direct job creation) are used to assess the sustainability of the scenarios. The results indicate that renewables can meet the goal of a 20% share of non-fossil energy in primary energy and 40%-50% share of non-fossil energy in electricity power. The low nuclear-hydro power scenario is the most optimal scenario based on the used evaluation criteria. With the increasing negative effects of fossil fuel combustion, many countries have paid more attention on supporting environmentally friendly energy generation, particularly renewable and sustainable energy sources (RES). However, renewables still cannot economically compete with fossil-fuels and are facing new challenges. Appropriate electricity pricing mechanism plays a vital role on mitigating the stress of limited fossil fuels and can promote renewable energy consumption. As one major type of renewable energy, wind power has been globally promoted. In order to promote the application of wind power, appropriate wind power prices (WPP) should be established by considering the local conditions. This paper targets such a field and conducts a bibliometric and network analysis based on the data from Scopus. The results show that the numbers of total related publications are gradually increasing, with the US as the leading country. European countries also have outstanding achievements. Moreover, both the most cited articles and keywords distribution offer future research directions. In general, this study provides valuable insights to both wind power researchers and practitioners. This paper employs an integrated model for analysis of energy demand and MARKet ALlocation modelling framework for assessing different pathways for the development of energy systems of Nepal. Four energy scenarios are analysed with the time horizon from 2010 to 2030. With high electrification and energy efficiency and demand-side management, the analysis reveals that all three major goals of sustainable energy for all can be achieved by 2030, but that the total discounted systems costs required account for three times the costs of the reference scenario. In the policy scenario, net fuel import costs and greenhouse gas emissions will decline by 20% and 35%, respectively and the share of renewable energy will increase from 3% in 2010 to 22% in 2030. The goal of this paper is to analyze recent developments in the renewable energy sector in the Western Balkans – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. In order to achieve this goal, existing knowledge gaps regarding the use of renewable energy as a share of the region׳s final energy consumption had to be filled in. This was done by creating a reliable model for the calculation of these shares for the years 2010 and 2011. The results were then put together with the official data for the years 2009, 2012, and 2013, and a linear trend forecast was included based on the combined data. In this way it was possible to make an estimation of the time frame in which the countries with positive linear trend results would reach their renewable energy use targets. The results of the analysis show inconsistent development of renewable energy sources for countries outside of the EU. Combined with political challenges, such as the natural gas crisis of 2009, this creates increased volatility in the proportion of renewable energy in final energy consumption. Additionally, regulatory and market issues ranging from a lack of appropriate legislation and complicated administrative procedures, to poor coordination between various institutions act as barriers to increased investment in renewable energy. Abstract: This invited keynote paper is the most recent among similar reviews published by the author, update to year 2011. In a format similar to that in past reviews, recent estimates and forecasts of the conventional fossil fuel resources and their reserve/production ratio, nuclear power, and renewable energy potential, and energy uses are surveyed. A brief discussion of the status, sustainability (economic, environmental and social impact), and prospects of fossil, nuclear and renewable energy use, and of power generation is presented. Beyond the general review, the paper focuses this year on some of the many important areas that deserve more attention: (1) the recently emerging game-changing developments of postponement of “peak oil”, nuclear power future following the disaster in Japan, and effects of the recent global economy downturn of global sustainability, (2) the potential and impacts of electric cars (3) the often neglected energy status and promising potential of Africa. Some ways to resolve the problem of the availability, cost, and sustainability of energy resources alongside the rapidly rising demand are discussed. Abstract: An initiative namely “SAVE or EXOIKONOMO” is implemented in Greece and includes development and implementation of municipal investment plans for sustainable energy development in urban areas. However, a part of the investments’ funds is covered by the government and most of the municipalities have serious difficulties in successful participation in this initiative. As a result, further efforts and “new” financial mechanisms are necessary in order to support the implementation of sustainable energy investments in urban areas. The scope of the current paper is to investigate the potential of implementing “JESSICA” as a complementary financing mechanism in the context of the development of sustainable energy investments. In specific, the successful financing of the strategic plan by Rhodes Municipality in Greece for improving energy efficiency is analyzed in this paper. Based on the results, the utilization of JESSICA for financing sustainable energy investments in urban areas of municipal authorities seems to fit well into the overall requirements of JESSICA as a financing mechanism of integrated urban development. Abstract: This paper deals with fundamental policy mistakes in Pakistan for the cause of sustainable development through renewable energy. It then identifies that the low level of awareness regarding the potentials of renewable energy is the key hurdle in achieving the said cause. The paper further traces the root cause of this low awareness in educational and S&T policies of Pakistan and finally provides some recommendations to avoid dilemmas related to such policies. Abstract: Renewable energy sources and technologies have potential to provide solutions to the long-standing energy problems being faced by the developing countries. The renewable energy sources like wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, ocean energy, biomass energy and fuel cell technology can be used to overcome energy shortage in India. To meet the energy requirement for such a fast growing economy, India will require an assured supply of 3–4 times more energy than the total energy consumed today. The renewable energy is one of the options to meet this requirement. Today, renewable account for about 33% of India''s primary energy consumptions. India is increasingly adopting responsible renewable energy techniques and taking positive steps towards carbon emissions, cleaning the air and ensuring a more sustainable future. In India, from the last two and half decades there has been a vigorous pursuit of activities relating to research, development, demonstration, production and application of a variety of renewable energy technologies for use in different sectors. In this paper, efforts have been made to summarize the availability, current status, major achievements and future potentials of renewable energy options in India. Abstract: There has been a renewed commercial and technical interest in pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) recently with the advent of increased variable renewable energy generation and the development of liberalized electricity markets. During the next 8 years over 7GW of PHES capacity will be added to the European network while projects are also planned in the USA and Japan. This paper provides a review of existing and proposed PHES plant and discusses the technical and economic drivers for these developments. Current trends for new PHES development generally show that developers operating in liberalized markets are tending to repower, enhance projects or build ‘pump-back’ PHES rather than traditional ‘pure pumped storage’. Capital costs per kW for proposed PHES in the review region range between €470/kW and €2170/kW, however these costs are highly site and project specific. An emergence has also been observed in recent PHES developments of the use of variable speed technology. This technology, while incurring slightly higher capital costs, offers a greater range of operational flexibility and efficiency over conventional PHES. This paper has primarily been prompted by a lack of detailed information on PHES facilities worldwide and reviews current developments in the context of market and generation mix changes. The most recent large scale review of PHES faculties was undertaken by the American Society of Civil Engineers Hydro Power Task Committee on Pumped Storage in 1996. In the absence of data in the literature on new PHES plant development, this review draws primarily on publicly available information from utilities, government bodies and electricity regulators. In the same context this study is limited to a review region of the European Union, Japan and the United States as information on developments outside these areas is difficult to procure. This paper also gives a review of locations and proposed timelines for new PHES development and provides a thorough up-to-date overview of the development trends of this technology. Heat pumps, an example of one of the most environmentally friendly technologies, can play a key role in the future of sustainable energy. Due to the European Union's ambitious goals to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, research is currently focused on finding solutions to increase the energy and economic efficiency of heating and cooling with heat pumps to benefit the environment. This paper presents the results of energy simulations for a single-family building located in selected cities—Warsaw (Poland), Madrid (Spain), Riga (Latvia), and Rome (Italy)—as a case study for different climate conditions and energy policy. In each variant, ground and air source heat pumps are considered for heating, cooling, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) purposes. Moreover, we conducted an economic estimation including investment and operating costs, as well as an ecological analysis of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Results show that heat pumps as an energy source for HVAC systems seem to be much more beneficial for Mediterranean-type subtropical climates, than for continental-type climates. The lowest value of total energy demand was obtained in Rome (60 kWh/m2∙rok), while the highest values were recorded in Riga and Warsaw (more than 90 kWh/m2∙rok). In terms of economic and environmental aspects, the use of heat pumps was most advantageous when considering Rome. This paper provides a starting point for further research focusing on increasing the energy and economic efficiency of heat pumps, especially in cold climates, as well as a multi-parameter analysis taking into account national prices, policies regarding development of renewable energy sources, and technical and climatic conditions. Unsustainable and uncontrolled development of urbanization, as well as the expansion and increase of environmental challenges, has caused extensive activities in recent years to reduce environmental pollution and efficient use of energy resources, worldwide. One of the appropriate solutions to reduce carbon dioxide (CO 2) emission and the optimal use of energy sources is the construction of an industrial energy park (IEP). Given the pivotal role of energy parks in different energy networks, accurate techno-economic-environmental assessment of energy parks, along with the promoted energy conversion facilities and flexibility options has become a challenging task. To address this open issue, this paper focuses on the coordinated operation of IEPs with a variety of thermal, electrical, and cooling loads to satisfy economic and environmental benefits. The proposed combined cooling, heat, and power (CCHP)-based energy park is equipped with multiple energy conversion facilities, such as absorption and electric chiller, power-to-heat facility, multi-energy storage, as well as demand response (DR) program as the flexibility option to supply energy demands, while has energy exchanging (power and heat exchanged) with the corresponding markets. The main objectives of this paper are to minimize the total operation cost of the energy park and decrease CO 2 emission rates. The coordinated model is exposed to the fluctuation of wind power, electrical and heat loads, and power prices, so the hybrid stochastic/information gap decision theory (IGDT)-based robust approach is used to handle them. The technical implications of using the proposed strategy are: (1) Creating a robust platform for industrial park operators to actively participate in different energy markets and take advantage of existing economic opportunities to meet the required energy demands at the lowest cost; and (2) Encouraging industrial park operators to participate in DR programs to reduce operating costs, increase energy efficiency, and contribute to the development of energy network plans. The proposed stochastic-IGDT multi-objective model is examined on the sample park and numerical results are discussed for different cases. In fact, satisfying the growing global energy demands and mitigating the climate change are of the utmost importance in the modern days. In this review paper, a detailed overview of the development and evolution of the renewable and sustainable energy sources is provided in terms of their types, characteristics, applications, production processes, advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, we discuss the impacts of the renewable energies on health and environment, along with the relevant policies and regulations. Further, the emerging technologies and theoretical and practical challenges in the development of the renewable energies are analyzed. Particularly, this review provides information on renewable and sustainable energies' status and prospects in North America. Central large-scale technology and distributed configurations of the renewable energies might be improved in the North American countries to effectively utilize the renewable energies for producing electricity, biomass-based fuels, and heating in both local/rural and industrial divisions. Based on the panel data of 20 countries in EU during the period of 2007–2019, this paper study the effect of energy market integration (EMI) on renewable energy development (RED). We develop a general equilibrium model to explain how EMI affect the RED and the role of different mechanisms. The empirical results reports that the European EMI increased both the consumption and power generation of renewable energy, which proves a significant positive effect of EMI on the RED. In line with our expectations of theoretical model, our estimates show that the increase of renewable energy consumption is mainly due to the fossil energy cost increased, technology advancement and regional environmental regulation strengthening. And the fossil energy cost is the main driven force which plays a completely mediating role between EMI and RED. Inter-area low frequency electromagnetic oscillation (LFEO) in inter-connected power systems is one of the major barriers to improve the dynamic performance of power systems, since they could either limit the amount of power transfer on the tie-lines or endanger the dynamic stability of the power systems. With the high penetration of wind and photovoltaic (PV) power plants in power systems, LFEO is becoming a problem worth more attention in renewable energy age and must be better solved in order to accept more wind and PV power in power systems. Wide-area damping control (WADC) has gained popularity in suppression of inter-area LFEO recently. Many control strategies have been developed on WADC design. This paper aims to provide a general review on practical issues, typical WADC off-line and adaptive design methods and engineering cases regarding WADC implementations. These practical issues include design flow, mode analysis, choice of actuator and feedback signal, system identification and the effect of time delay. Iran is rich in energy resources and oil has dominated the politico-socio-economic life of this country, but nevertheless Iran has no documented policy and vision for its massive resources. This poses a major challenge to policy makers and the society. It is necessary to have a clear picture of Iran׳s energy status in recent years showing the flow of energy supply, demand, consumption, import and export to know how the energy situation in Iran is and identify its weaknesses and strengths. This paper is the first step in that direction and presents an overview of Iran energy situation and the potential and current state of renewable energy application. The status of energy in Iran is compared to world’s energy status via five key factors, and finally this comparison shows hints for designing roadmap of energy for Iran to attain sustainable and secure energy in long term.
