The paper examines the process of return among the fourth largest South American immigrants groups in Spain: Argentines, Bolivians, Colombians and Ecuadorians. Using several sources of official data from Spain and Population Census from origin countries, the paper describes the incidence of return as well as returnees characteristics. Immigrants from Bolivia, who are the ones arriving later to Spain and having the largest numbers of irregular migrants have the highest return rates. Besides, we found that men are more likely to return and also that returnees have higher educational attainment and lower labor force participation rates that the whole population in origin countries. The study points several conceptual and methodological challenges for the study of return migration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IMMIGRANT families , *SINGLE-parent families , *IMMIGRANTS , *WOMEN immigrants , *LATIN Americans , *POVERTY - Abstract
One-parent families in immigration are a phenomenon that has scarcely been explored in Spain, despite the frequency of these forms of household among migrant women, particularly Latin American women who settle in this country. Poverty and single parenthood are two elements that often appear simultaneously in the trajectories of migrant women. The incidence of single parenthood among migrant women from Latin America—specifically Andean and Caribbean countries— resident in Spain will be analyzed in this article. The paper will show how Latin American women have a higher percentage of this type of household. This paper examines forms of entry into single parenthood, and the living conditions of these families once in Spain. It proves that emigrating in single parenthood conditions raises the risk of poverty in Spain. It will be proved that migration in single parenthood has different profiles in relation to the causes of the migration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The friction that has occurred - and continues to occur - at some of the European Union's internal borders is a reflection of mechanisms for the delegation and transfer of immigration control between member states. This paper addresses these dynamics - defined as "internal externalisation" - through a comparative analysis of the specific management and legal regulation of France's border with Spain and Italy. These two borders are similar in many respects (being two mountain ranges) but are, at the same time, very different (in the geographical intensity of the controls and types of crossings). Comparing them could reveal the border control mechanisms that characterise the subordinate relationships between member states, and which represent true externalisation of the EU's internal borders. Some states are forced to take on the role of containment states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IMMIGRANTS , *SOCIOECONOMIC factors - Abstract
This paper analyses the social determinants, socio-demographic and lifestyle factors that affect the health self-appraisal of immigrants of Moroccan origin living in the Spanish region of Navarra, using data from a cross-sectional ethnosurvey conducted in 2013. Results show, contrary to the literature, that women have a better health status variation than men, probably because men have a higher age profile and a longer stay in Spain. The binary logistic regression reveals important differences in the likelihoods of finding specific determinants of the health by sex. Paid employment is the most positive, significant factor for health among women. Close social ties with other Moroccan immigrants, living in an inexpensive old house and, to a lesser extent, having a secondary level of educational achievement show the highest probabilities for men. IMMIGRATION policy , *IMMIGRANTS , *LABOR mobility , *MIGRANT labor , *INTERNATIONAL economic integration - Abstract
This paper examines the contradiction at the heart of Italian and Spanish immigration policies between the calls for integration on the one hand, and the marginalization associated with temporary and contingent immigration status on the other. I argue that this tension is structural and reflects an underlying contradiction in the political economy of these post-Fordist societies. In the second half of this paper, I examine this same tension in U.S. immigration policy, and explore the ways the current proposals for reform would bring U.S. immigration policy closer to that of Spain and Italy. I note that while the tension between immigrant marginalization and integration has always characterized U.S. policy, the contradiction has intensified as immigrants are an increasingly visible component of the U.S. workforce, complicating attempts at meaningful reform. This paper analyses the patterns of engagement in education of young people of immigrant origin resident in Spain, using data from the Spanish Labour Force Survey. The results show that the probability that immigrant-origin youth may be outside the educational system is higher than the probability for native youth, but only for those who came to Spain after the age of ten years old. In addition, their reaction to changes in the employment situation has been less intense. Also, parental educational resources slow down the reaction to changes in employment opportunities for the children of native people and daughters of immigrants, decreasing the inequality within each group in contexts of recession, but this is not the case for male young immigrants. This paper makes a critical examination of the most recent developments in Spanish practice relating to the control of irregular immigration. It analyses the commitments being made in the framework of the European integration process and their implications for the control of external borders as well as the agreements concluded by Spain - treaties and non-binding agreements (memorandums of understanding, etc.) - aimed at controlling flows of people. In this context, the article also gives attention to Spain's international obligations on human rights taking its impact on the issue and the most recent internal developments into account - both in legislative changes approved and those being enacted as administrative practice. In light of the foregoing, a critical assessment of these developments and events (e.g. "hot returns") is submitted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En su caso, la forma de relacionarse con las autoridades es independiente de su situación administrativa (poseer o no el permiso de residencia)., [eng] From the proposal about the components of the civil society by Perez Diaz, the foreign migrants as contributors in the Spanish society are analyzed. The administrative registration and the relation with the State has been studied as a participation form. One looks for to detect and to analyze the forms of answering of the international immigrants in this scope. It constitutes a form of relation with the institutions, independently of its situation with the authority and the disposition or not of residence permissions. The distribution of the foreigners is by nationality of continent and the participation of the people from America is clearly noticed. The data sources are: the Census of 2001, the Amnesties of 2000 and 2001 and the Registries of Residents. Special mention deserves the results in Catalunya, in addition to the analysis at level of Spain. The Latin Americans would display the greater amount of people waiting for an amnesty, who nevertheless have made the voluntary inscription in the Registration Office. The people from other continents do not make this inscription if its situation is not regulated; or at least not in the same proportion than that from the American people. In its case, the form to be related to the authorities is independent from its administrative situation (to have or not the residence permission).

This paper analyses the vulnerability of foreigners in the Spanish labor market by conducting empirical analysis based on Spanish statistics. This article goes in depth the tendencies (especially during the current financial crisis, 2008-2012) and the determinants of the vulnerability of foreign workers, mainly non-EU countries immigrants. On the one hand, an increase of unemployment rate of foreign workers, a loss of occupational biography, a long distant between Spanish and foreign salaries and finally, more difficulties to obtain incomes for foreigners, represent the main tendencies. On the other hand, the concentration in less qualified occupation, a higher rate of temporary contracts, the inflexible regulation and the decrease of the negotiation power of Spaniards, lead to suppose a higher vulnerability of foreigners in Spain. The purpose of this paper is to study the occupational mobility experienced following migration by migrants who are university graduates or postgraduates who completed their studies before their arrival in Spain. To do so, we compared the first job they obtained in Spain with the last one held before leaving their country of origin. We identify three different types of mobility: downward mobility, lateral mobility, and upward mobility. Finally, we used logistic regression models to identify the strongest predictors of the three types of mobility previously classified. The empirical analysis was carried out using data from the Spanish National Immigrant Survey (ENI) of 2007, including information about some 15 000 individuals. Our attention will be focused on the 2 425 skilled migrants from this survey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The crisis has started a new migration cycle in Spain. As an effect of the restrictive measures taken and the depth of the crisis, migrant inflows have reduced and outflows have increased, the latter especially among Latin Americans. This paper explores the impact of the crisis on migrant people and their families in terms of unemployment, of declining living conditions, and of legal uncertainty. In this situation, a growing minority of immigrants, particularly Latin Americans, implement transnational strategies such as return, circular migration and others. Notwithstanding this, most immigrants are facing the crisis here, combining work, social and family strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the dynamics of the reconfiguration of Bolivian migratory fields in the context of the crisis affecting European destination countries. At a global level, we show how the 2008 worldwide economic crisis, and, in particular, its severity in Spain, has reoriented Bolivian migratory flows towards regional Latin American destinations: economies undergoing larger relative growth, such as Brazil and Chile, are newer destinations, while migration to Argentina has a long history. In a more qualitative approach, based on fieldwork interviews with Bolivian migrants in Spain, we explore the key factors that determine migratory strategies: whether to stay, return or re-emigrate. The aim of this paper is to understand the role of physical activity and sport in the social integration of young immigrants in Almeria (Spain). The Physical Activity and Sport Acculturation Index (PASAI) was designed for this purpose, taking four dimensions into account (i.e., mixed relationships, cultural references, norms and transnationality). Data were obtained from a survey administered to the immigrant population between 14 and 24 years old. Results show that immigrants have a low level of participation in physical activity and sport. Generation and origin appear to be the main variables that predict this participation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Spain, social integration policies for immigrants fall under the powers of the Autonomous Communities. That is why they have developed an integral set of actions that have been implemented over recent years under the name Immigrant Integration Plans, each one of which has a particular integration model. This could lead to important regional differences on this matter, which could provoke heterogeneous integration situations. In order to discover the reality in each Autonomous Community, the research gathered in this article was developed in accordance with the following objectives: first, to study the integration model used by each Autonomous Community in designing its immigrant integration policy; second, to know the opinions of the people addressed by these policies as regards their coexistence process in each Community; third, the social strategies used by this group in order to adapt to the new social situation encountered after immigrating were studied.

In this article on the social processes of integration in adolescents and youth, we describe and explain the factors which, in a representative sample of 413 immigrant adolescents in Huelva, Spain, are linked to having a sense of belonging to Spain. Approximately fifty percent of those interviewed reported a sense of belonging to Spain, although the degree of belonging to this country was lower or non-existent in other cases. This paper attempts to delimit the elements that largely explain the degree of the sense of belonging to a country, which is crucial to understanding the processes of identificative integration. We found several variables linked to the sense of belonging to Spain: life satisfaction, structural opportunities perceived in Spain, orientation towards the Spanish language (monolingual or bilingual), multiple territorial identification, participation in Spanish celebrations and activities, and trust in Spanish people. This article studies the gender pattern of Peruvian migration to Spain and Argentina. The author compares the different contexts that migrants face in both countries and the possibilities that are offered to migrant women in terms of jobs and social mobility. The author also analyzes how these opportunities are reflected in the expectations of Peruvian women to support their families in Peru and to be able to bring them to Spain and Argentina in the long run. Additionally, she explores how migrants design strategies to achieve these expectations through a mind-set (imaginario) where migration is represented as a global hierarchical network and migration targets. The questions underlying this research include the following: who are the women that migrate to these two countries? What type of social network do they use to migrate and how do they migrate? Which are the strategies they develop to support themselves and insert themselves in the labor market of Spain and Argentina? Which are the similarities and the differences observed between Peruvian migration to Spain and Argentina, and which are the economic and social opportunities they encounter as migrants? The data on which this paper is based -the migration experiences of three Peruvian women in each country- was gathered through field work which was carried out in Spain, in 1997, and in Argentina, in 2000. Despite increasing measures to control and regulate migration flows, irregular migration has grown in the last few years in Spain, Malaysia and the United States. This increase in irregular immigration has mainly been explained in relation to socio-economic factors. However, while these factors explain the presence of migration flows towards these countries, they do not succeed in explaining why an important part of these flows takes place on a non-regular basis. This can only be considered by taking into account the State and its immigration policies. Starting out from this statement, this research paper analyses to what extent, how and why the immigration policies of Spain, Malaysia and the United States produce «illegals«. This means not only analysing how and why immigration policies contribute to the increase in the number of irregular immigrants, but also how and why, by denying their rights and often their existence, they create the figure of the «illegal immigrant». As this research note demonstrates for the Malaysian case, irregular immigration is not despite immigration policies but because of them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this analysis we make an approach to the impact and importance of a transnational perspective when studying current international migrations. More specifically, the objective of this paper is to reflect on the impact of the monetary and «social» remittances of Peruvian and Ecuadorian immigrants living in Spain, considering their households as transnational. Background: the prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis in Spain could vary because of the immigrants coming from countries having an elevated with a higher endemicity of hepatitis B and C virus. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus infections are an important health problem worldwide taking into account their chronic consequences. The aim of this study was to know the impact of immigration in the prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis in Spain. Methods: qualitative of scientific papers searching in Medline and MEDES-MEDicina, with date limit January 1998- December 2012 and only papers in English and Spanish. Results: data from 19 original articles were analyzed. The prevalences of hepatitis B and C virus infections in the immigrant population, on the whole, are higher than Spanish population. Immigrants from Africa and East European countries presented the higher prevalence of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus infection, whereas the Latin American-origin population displayed the lowest one. Conclusion: the prevalences of hepatitis B and C virus infections in the immigrant population suggest they could have a substantial public health impact in Spain.

This study focuses on the level of membership in associations of the migrant population in Spain. Three types of civic engagement are considered: participation in all types of civic associations, in associations for immigrants and in non-immigrant associations. The article investigates whether immigrants coming from countries with higher levels of civic participation are more likely to participate in civic associations and if immigrants who have lived longer in and stayed in closer contact with a home country with a higher level of civic participation are more likely to join civic associations. Data used come from the Spanish National Immigrant Survey (2007) and the World Values Survey (2000, 2005). The results of multilevel logistic regressions show that immigrants who have spent more time in a more participatory context at origin and who are in closer contact with these societies are more likely to get involved in civic associations at destination. This paper studies patterns of endogamous marriages of immigrants in Spain by using data from the National Immigrant Survey of Spain (2007). First of all, we examine patterns of endogamous marriage and links between migration and marriage. Second, we assess the factors influencing the likelihood of being in an endogamous marriage. Our analyses focus on persons married either immediately before, during or after arrival in Spain originating from six countries: Morocco, Romania, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, and a group of other developing countries. Results show that the level of endogamy is highest among the Moroccan immigrants and lowest for those coming from Colombia. The likelihood of an endogamous union is higher for those married before migration compared to those married later. Furthermore, chances on endogamy are lower for more highly educated. Women are less likely than men to be in endogamous unions.

[EN] This paper defining the causes which underlie a public policy: Forum for immigrant participation. Little is known about the specific motivations which lead different governments’ decisions to institute such policies. This process cannot only refer to the theoretical objectives, but must consider the context in which certain Governments are brought to implement such policies while others do not. Hear submits a comparative analysis of 15 regional Immigration Forums in Spain. The aim is to verify that their creation responds to three variables: institutional isomorphism, response to demand and ideology. The conclusion is that normative variables and demand alone cannot explain the implementation but must be considered in conjunction with ideological motivation and the political context., [ES] Este artículo explica las causas por las que se implementa una política pública: los Foros para la participación inmigrante.

However, within the transnational migration context, it would be better to call them “trans-European” citizens, as they have ties with more than one EU member state and therefore they have more than simply one national or cultural identity. Moreover, as these connections can be at different levels, there are also diverse sources allowing to analyse each of them. The paper’s aim is twofold: firstly, we intend to evaluate Spanish sources on these new trans-European citizens and, secondly, follow their recent volume in Spain. Results confirm that Spain could be considered a paradigmatic case of this new trans-European migration. However, the phenomenon should also be situated within this last decade's immigration boom context.
