Mathematics classrooms instruction in Nigeria secondary schools has been termed a major problem to both teachers and their students. Most classroom activities are teacher-centred with students as mere listeners and recipients of knowledge rather than being active initiators of their knowledge. This paper seeks to investigate the effects of introducing inclusion to Nigerian mathematics classroom in combating these problems. Four mathematics teachers taught senior secondary mathematics in three secondary schools in Northern Nigeria for fifteen weeks, adopting the concept of inclusion in their classroom teaching. Using the qualitative case study approach, the researcher used students' interviews and focus group discussions to determine the perceptions, strategies and benefits of using inclusive strategy to mathematics classroom instruction to collect data for this paper. Data collected from focus group interviews were analyzed using grounded theory approach. The results of the study revealed positive changes in students' attitude towards mathematics classroom instructions. This also helped to facilitate students' engagement, collaboration and interest in mathematics during the research as the students felt included in the mathematics classroom instruction. The researchers therefore suggested that adoption of an inclusive mathematics classroom in Nigeria will enable student learning and reduced the teachers domineering attitude during mathematics classroom instruction.

By presenting perceptions of Nigerian students enrolled in the online international postgraduate programmes of the University of Liverpool regarding academic integrity, this paper aims to explore Western ideas, such as originality and plagiarism that are extraneous in the students' local cultures. Different historical and cultural circumstances may contribute to the construction of diverse meanings that online students attribute to these concepts. The multidisciplinary study follows phenomenological research design (van Manen, 1997; Creswell, 2007) and combines cultural anthropology (Hall, 1996, Hannerz, 2001; Coleman et al., 2010) as well as online education (Anderson, 2008) in the research. The paper promotes a non-judgmental and culturally aware approach when dealing with issues of academic integrity, intends to find ideological reasons in authentic cultural belief systems that may demonstrate that the common "non-understanding" concerning academic integrity is due to a culture-dependent meaning construction process, which leads to the ideological misinterpretation of these Western concepts.

Over the years, many policies have been implemented across nations to prevent, reduce and tighten enforcement on smoking and tobacco use. However, despite all of the major initiatives, smoking related deaths and diseases still remain high and present a major challenge for many nations of the world. In this paper we argue that conducting a critical ethnography study in different settings, as this research sets out to do (in Nigeria) is a first step to understanding the tobacco control policies that will work effectively in different resource settings. As the act of smoking becomes global, it is beneficial to study the effect of specific methods, methodology and policies in addressing smoking in the population. This paper is one of three on the study of public health challenge of smoking in Nigeria, and explains the method used in collecting and analyzing data. The research was undertaken and analyzed through a critical ethnography lens using critical realism as a philosophical underpinning. In the study we relied upon the following components: original field work in Nigeria which includes participant observation of smokers, in-depth interviews and focus groups with smokers, and in depth interviews with health professionals working in the area of tobacco control in Nigeria.

While most universities in the developed world, by tradition, have research offices to handle research management, structures for the efficient coordination and strong governance of research are nascent within many Sub-Saharan African universities. In this paper we look at the organizational structures, policies and functions of research offices for supporting faculty research as well as their management operations in 5 selected Nigerian universities. The authors interviewed 20 participants from 5 selected federal universities in Nigeria. Five directors of the research offices and 15 research administrators participated. Findings identified existing infrastructure for research management, the challenges facing newly created research offices in Nigerian universities, and strategies employed by research offices to tackle identified problems. Findings also showed how policies, practices, institutional structures and support models for research governance are shifting to align with international best practices. Recommendations suggested by participants for developing effective research management practices are discussed.

The rise in low-fee private (LFP) primary schooling serving relatively poor clients is becoming well-documented. However much of this literature focuses on urban areas whose dense populations are favourable to market growth and competition. This paper goes some way to filling a gap in the literature on whether LFP schools are serving the needs of the poor in rural areas, taking the case of one Nigerian state. It contrasts the situation in rural areas with that of urban Ilorin, where private schools cater to over half of all enrolled children. The paper shows that private schooling is currently inaccessible to the poor, with only 3.3% of children in the poorest 40% of the population attending them, and only 13% of enrolled children in rural areas. The key message is that redoubled efforts are needed to improve government schools as providers of last resort to those bypassed by the market.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of students on the implementation of e-examination and their preparedness for facilitation through a web-based learning platform at the National Open University of Nigeria. Information gathered from the year three and year four students who registered for courses in English Literature in the undergraduate English Programme and Law at the Lagos Study Centre of the university was evaluated. This group of students has participated in the e-examination as well as the pen on paper (POP) examinations so are in a better position to evaluate the e-examination. The investigation was carried out through interviews, focus discussions and questionnaires and the result indicated that the students' perceptions of online examination were generally positive and that they were enthusiastic about online facilitation but skeptical about its workability at this stage of our nation's technological development.

Background: Gender inequities remain critical determinants influencing maternal health. Harmful gender norms and gender-based violence adversely affect maternal health. Gendered division of labour, lack of access to and control of resources, and limited women's decision-making autonomy impede women's access to maternal healthcare services. We undertook a cluster randomized controlled trial of universal home visits to pregnant women and their spouses in one local government area in Bauchi State, North-Eastern Nigeria. The trial demonstrated a significant improvement in maternal and child health outcomes and male knowledge, attitudes and behaviours. This paper qualitatively evaluates gender equity in the home visits programme., Methods: The research team explored participants' views about gender equity in the home visits programme. We conducted nine key informant interviews with policymakers and 14 gender and age-stratified focus group discussions with men and women from visited households, with women and men home visitors and supervisors, and with men and women community leaders. Analysis used an adapted conceptual framework exploring gender equity in mainstream health. A deductive thematic analysis of interviews and focus group reports looked for patterns and meanings., Results: All respondents considered the home visits programme to have a positive impact on gender equity, as they perceived gender equity. Visited women and men and home visitors reported increased male support for household chores, with men doing heavy work traditionally pre-assigned to women. Men increased their support for women's maternal health by paying for healthcare and providing nutritious food. Households and community members confirmed that women no longer needed their spouses' permission to use health services for their own healthcare. Households and home visitors reported an improvement in spousal communication. They perceived a significant reduction in domestic violence, which they attributed to the changing attitudes of both women and men due to the home visits. Background: As part of the fight against coronavirus disease, Nigeria received nearly 4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine via the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) Facility, marking a historic step towards equitable global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. Although evidence exists on COVID-19 hesitancy in Nigeria, yet, we are unaware of any study on the optimization of COVID-19 vaccination from the lenses of the mobile teams., Objective: This study seeks to explore the perceptions and experiences of mobile teams in selected communities during the implementation of COVID-19 vaccination in Benue and Niger., Methods: An exploratory approach was adopted, and the study was conducted in Niger and Benue states based on poor performance in COVID-19 vaccination. Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) were conducted among 12 mobile vaccination teams from 12 LGAs. The recorded discussions were transcribed and coded (inductively and deductively) using Dedoose software (v9.0). Four themes and seven sub-themes were generated from the participants' responses., Results: Seventy-two (72) health workers including vaccinators, validators, Electronic Management of Immunization Data (EMID) recorders, social mobilizers, and paper recorders participated in this study. Health workers' perceptions and experiences were thematized using the health building blocks. The mobilization teams in Benue and Niger states perceived that their mobilization efforts contributed to improved coverage, increased accessibility, and reduced hesitancy among the community dwellers. Challenges reported by the teams were vaccine misconceptions, requests for incentives in exchange for vaccine uptake, poor network services, distance to communities, and vaccine stockout., Conclusion: This study concluded that social mobilizers play key roles in vaccine uptake, especially at the community level. Their roles in creating awareness, sensitization, and bringing the vaccine closer to hard-to-reach communities contributed to the success attained in the fight against COVID-19 in both states., (© 2024. The cohesion of our multicultural societies depends on mutual understanding, engaging proactively in co-operation between different communities and respecting one another. This paper deals with the educational philosophy of a well-known Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gülen and its application to schools in Nigeria. Gülen-inspired schools in Nigeria are peace islands in the ocean of violence, and promote love, greater empathy, tolerance and peace in a society deeply divided along ethnic, religious, tribal and geographical lines. Following Gülen's example, the schools promote respect for other cultures and the trains of thought of various well-known scholars. Students, throughout their education, learn to appreciate other faiths, ethnicities and cultures, as well as their own. This article reports on a 2010 qualitative field study conducted at the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges (NTICs) in Abuja, Nigeria. In this qualitative inquiry, the researchers used observations, in- depth individual interviews and focus groups to elicit the lived experience of four identified groups of stakeholders (administrators, teachers, students and parents). Participants in this study comprised 22 adults, of which 9 were females and 13 males, aged 16 to 61 (M = 28.9). The findings indicate that the Gülenian style of education, as it is implemented in Nigeria, and according to the reflections of those participants involved with NTICs, exposes students to people from different parts of Nigeria, as well as people who often are from different ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds. The organisation of the school and the school activities allow students to experience those differences in a safe setting, resulting in their learning to appreciate one another.

Learning in Nigeria is considered to have taken a new dimension as the Distance Learning Centre (DLC) of the University of Ibadan has created wider access to learning through the application of mobile technology to learning with particular reference to mobile phones use for the teaching and learning process. By this, the Centre seeks to achieve one of the major objectives of the Nigerian National Policy on Education, which is the provision of equal educational opportunities to all citizens at different levels of education. The paper therefore presents the attendant challenges of introducing such an innovative idea to learning at the University of Ibadan using a sampled population of 201 in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) held among learners under the Distance Learning platform to establish the benefits and problems of using mobile phones for learning in the University of Ibadan.

This paper assessed the participation of elderly women in community welfare activities in Oyo State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 120 elderly women from six out of the twelve political wards in the study area. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection were used to elicit information from the respondents. A focus group discussion was conducted with the elderly women groups, in each of the six wards. Frequency counts and percentages were used to summarise the data, while chi-square and the multinomial logit regression model were also used to analyse the data. There were significant relationships between the level of participation of rural elderly women in community welfare activities and age (X[superscript 2] = 81.50, P = 0.05), marital status(X[superscript 2] = 3.84, P = 0.05), educational status (X[superscript 2] =196.07, P = 0.05), religion (X[superscript 2] = 8.53, P = 0.05) and place of origin (X[superscript 2] = 51.53, P = 0.05). The study concludes that rural elderly women participate in various community welfare activities such as care of children, giving of advice on child care, maternal care, family planning, family health, mediation and resolution of conflicts, assistance with domestic chores, family nutrition, children education on basic skills and good morals. It is therefore recommended that rural elderly women should be involved in rural development issues since they have a wealth of knowledge on various community welfare issues. The discussion on how to integrate African indigenous knowledge (IK) into mainstream Science and Technology schooling prevails. Nigeria's colonised school curriculum is antithetical to its rich IK heritage. Guided by postcolonial theory, and the need for a culturally relevant and decolonised curriculum, this paper sought to explore seven basic 7-9 Science and Technology teachers' conceptions of IK in Imo State, Nigeria, and ways they reportedly integrate IK in their classes. A qualitative approach was used to generate data from the teachers via narratives and focus group discussions. The teachers held five significant conceptions of IK: Informal Knowledge, Relational Knowledge, Traditional Knowledge, Technological Knowledge that is scientifically based and Lost Knowledge. However, only the conceptions of IK as Relational Knowledge and as scientifically based Technological Knowledge were enacted in their classroom. We advance the rationale that teachers with these conceptions and consequent classroom enactment are ideally situated to serve as cultural brokers of IK.

The development of any society to a large extent depends on the degree of the security of lives and property of the citizens. A secure environment encourages intellectuals who are the drivers of nationbuilding; it also ensures national development. In recent years, Nigeria has been witnessing serious security threats that seem to have overwhelmed the nation’s security network and this has slowed down development in the country. This paper in light if these present realities, examined how technological innovations such as the integration of proper Information Communication Technology (ICT) resolve the emerging security threats bedeviling the country. Integrating ICT in the humanities can help increase the rate of development in the country and also help resolve the emerging security threats bedeviling the country. Data for the paper was derived from a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) conducted via WhatsApp with fifteen selected academic staff who are in the humanities at the University of Jos. The data collected formed the basis of the discussion in the paper. The theoretical framework adopted is Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) because it explains how technology can be utilized in language learning and evidently in the humanities to resolve challenging issues. The paper discovered that the humanities have not been fully integrated with ICT and have also not been effectively utilized in the quest for advancing development in Nigeria and resolving security challenges. The paper recommended amongst others the full integration of ICT in the humanities to expand the scope of the field to be utilized in resolving security challenges in the country. Scholarship on the #BringBackOurGirls (#BBOG) movement mainly focuses on its success in generating global attention to the 2014 kidnapping of Nigeria's Chibok girls. This paper focuses on an unintended consequence of the movement—the establishment of a social problem industry around the Chibok girls and their community. The paper draws on a dataset with over 160 interviewees and focus group discussion (FGD) participants, including 42 #BBOG activists. The findings demonstrate the interplay of contextually situated actors with particular values and interests engaged in claims-making regarding the Chibok girls. The #BBOG turned the Chibok kidnapping into a social problem in a sociological sense. In the process, the BBOG engaged in an ideational battlefield with three other entities. The paper contributes to the sociology of social problems by articulating weaknesses in social problem theory. This helps to suggest how to make social problems theory more applicable to developing world contexts. The paper's approach avoids the unilinearism and determinism of existing theory. It argues that not all social problems are resolved in ways that are favourable to those affected. The use of non-state actors as channels of aid allocation has been increasingly favoured over the use of government and state agencies. This paper makes use of anecdotal evidence from interviews, focus groups, and surveys in the South-East and South-South regions of Nigeria to explore aid allocation processes with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of aid, particularly in conflict-affected societies. The findings show that the participants generally prefer bypassing the government in the survey. However, a deeper examination of the interviews and focus groups indicates that bypassing government may not necessarily be the most effective aid allocation process. A hybrid system that essentially involves the government, non-state actors, and particularly the end-users of the aid is encouraged. The findings also indicate that regions with higher levels of instability such as conflict may prefer the allocation of aid via non-state actors than other regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In northern Nigeria, widows' identities and status are defined within the mores, norms, traditional religions, and legal institutions of the cultures of the community. The ethnic cultural laws are oppressive and retrogressive. The nexus of these cultural pressures trigger discriminatory practices that deny school attending widows' access, and completion of primary and secondary levels of education, leaving them literacy bankrupt and unskilled to fend for themselves and their children. These experiences motivated an all women Community Based Organization (CBO) to establish a Widows Training School to educate widows in vocational skills and basic literacy and numeracy. This paper examines research that was conducted with a sample of former graduates and attendees of the Widows Training School (WTS). The study is based on a qualitative educational research orientation, and the case study design. Multi-modal data were derived from Focused Group Interviews (FGIs) and Non Participant Observation (NPO) with a sample population of the widows. Data analysis engaged the qualitative process of transcription, categorization, and generation of codes that were merged into major themes, and presented in the as socio cultural status of the widows in the community; historical foundation, nature and curriculum implementation of the school; and the facets of sustainable learning outcome of the widows.

Recently, politics of education in Nigeria have shifted from urban to rural literacy, which led to the development of programmes such as the nomadic women's adult education programme. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the programme's implementation strategies, and the extent to which the health educational objectives have been achieved and practised by the Fulani pastoral women. A qualitative narrative research design was used to collect social data from the participants. The choice of design considered the cultural interactive patterns and gender socialization process of the women's ethnic group. The data collection process involved focus-group interviews and participant observations, while data analysis included translation and transcription of the oral to text data, followed by categorization and coding processes which resulted in major expected and "ordinary" themes. Triangulation as a validity procedure was used to corroborate the stories of the women study participants. The study major findings revealed that the objectives of the programme have been achieved in the area of personal health empowerment, knowledge and practices that minimized reproductive morbidities, fostered better family planning practices, healthier food and nutritional practices, improved hygienic and sanitation practices, and child healthcare first-aid therapies. Excerpts from the women's "voices" are cited to support their health transformational claims. The paper concludes by elucidating major learner challenges, as well as suggesting administrative remedies that will minimize these, serve as a guide for future policy reforms and research and help sustain the transformational health practices of the women.

Although young people in Nigeria become sexually active at a very early age, little is known about how they view sex, sexuality, and relationships with the opposite sex. Yet knowledge of their notions and expectations regarding these issues has the potential to improve care and inform the development of sexuality education programmes. This paper reports the findings of a study which relied on in-depth individual interviews and focus group discussions to investigate notions of sex, sexuality, and relationships among 120 boys aged 10-21 in rural southeastern Nigeria. Emerging data suggest that the popular images of sex, sexuality, and relationship among the boys support the notion of the cult of the male, which consists in a heady mixture of paternalism, systematic subordination of girls, and the glorification and idolization of male sexuality and sexual prowess. Boys generally held a penis-centred view of sex and tended to liken sexual intercourse and relationships with girls to encounters during which girls were conquered, subdued, and demystified. The ideology of a double standard, in which males feel morally and physically edified by multiple sex encounters and viewed females as morally demeaned by the same, was observed among the boys. The findings show the need for approaches to sexuality education to be sensitive to the cultural contexts within which these notions are formed and sustained among boys in local communities.

With the increasing rate of youth unemployment in the country, Nigeria's youths have invested their commitments (time, money, and intrinsic efforts) to several gambling avenues such as Baba Ijebu, Naira Bet, and Westen Lotto Bet to source for finance to meet up their daily expenses and reduce the crime rate that would have engaged in as a result of high rate of unemployment. The aggregate unemployment rate is 70%, while youth unemployment accounts for about 58%. With the huge rate of youth unemployment in the country, the study intends to examine the participation level of youths in gambling in Lagos State. It further inspects the effects of youth gambling on household welfare and spending. Methods used in the paper include a two-stage survey design, a qualitative component that comprises the targeted focus group discussions, and probit modeling to estimate how important the identified challenges are. The paper found that Nigeria's unemployed youths have utmost interest in gambling to sustaining their income source and meeting daily spending. These activities have reduced crime rate orchestrated by the youths, but with rising displacement effects on household welfare and spending. The paper concludes that gambling has adverse effect on youth's welfare and therefore recommends that the Lagos State government should embark on formalizing all gambling activities to protect the gambling youths and strengthen tax revenue collection through the introduction of per winning tax. This paper examines the challenging factors besetting faith tourism products in two religious centres in the southwestern region of Nigeria, namely The Redeemed Christian Church of God and Osun Oshogbo Sacred Grove. Different world religions are associated with faith-based activities which are sought after by adherents, admirers and tourists. The effects of this tourist traffic are highly beneficial to society, as they stimulate other sectors of the economy. However, improperly planned religious tourism may result in untoward negative effects. This paper employs ethnographic research methods (direct observation, interviews and focus group discussion) to address the subject matter. The findings revealed that the major challenge of most religious activities is overcrowding, out of which other challenges emanate. The study suggested measures to mitigate the challenges. What is new about this study is the awareness it seeks to create about the unique and inherent contents of faith-based activities and how these promote visitation if the identified impediments are properly managed. These findings are invaluable to all stakeholders, namely developers, government and policymakers in the tourism industry, as they re-engage them to revisit emerging challenges in religious tourism development. Peace and Conflict Risk Assessment (PCRA) has gained prominence in development planning. Today, one would hardly contest the fact that the negative interaction of conflict elements may predispose the environment to conflict. Using the Multi-causal theoretical role model and the Country Indicators for Foreign Policy (CIFP) risk model, the paper examines how knowledge of the interaction of negative conflict energies can aid government and development partners in the design and implementation of relevant peace governance architecture in Katsina-Ala local government area of Benue State, Nigeria, which has been threatened by history of conflicts. Although, existing studies have focused on peacebuilding as important mechanism for peace governance in fragile contexts, the relevance of peace and conflict risk assessment to effective peace governance has received little attention. The thesis sponsored by this paper revolves around the evidence that without a good understanding of the interaction of conflict elements within a context, it would be difficult to design and implement contextspecific peace governance architecture. Through, a triangulated method of data collection (focus group discussion, key informant interview and semi-structured questionnaire), ten variables were content analyzed to determine their risk severity ratings on the context. These included history of intercommunal conflicts, history of intra-communal conflicts, circulation of arms, environmental stress, ethnic/tribal consciousness, social amenities, siting of projects, women and youth's involvement in governance, People with Disabilities (PWDs) and Local Government. The study revealed that the interaction of these variables have predisposed Katsina-Ala to intermittent conflicts. The paper suggests that evidence-based peace governance architecture is central to the mitigation of the negative interaction of conflict energies in Katsina-Ala local government area. Collaboration and community participation are crucial for securing sustainable tourism and highlight the need to listen and respond to the broad range of stakeholders' voices, opinions, and concerns. These concepts dominated the discourse of sustainable-responsible tourism and gave rise to collaboration theory as well as various types of community participation. Many scholars in both Western and emerging economies have employed these concepts; however, there is limited research on how they apply in the Nigerian tourism industry. Therefore, this exploratory research discusses collaboration and community participation in tourism development in Nigeria, using the Southeastern region as a case study. In this area, tourism is in the early phase of growth. The paper reports on interviews and focus group discussions used to interact with tourism stakeholders in the region (traditional rulers, men, women, and youth representatives, chief priests, security agents, and tourism officials). Results showed that while the stakeholders are willing to collaborate, challenges affecting their efforts include autocratic governance structures leading to mistrust, clash of responsibilities, inadequate funding for security, lack of tourism awareness and little respect for local culture. The paper concludes that to develop a resident-friendly tourism destination and sustain collaboration and community participation, stakeholders require education about tourism and opportunities to participate in planning. Non-state armed groups (NSAGs) are a prominent phenomenon in the discourse on security in Africa. They serve as either anti-state agents orchestrating violence or fill security void by complementing state security. This paper analyzes the activities of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) as a variant of non-state armed groups within the context of community-based counterterrorism initiative in Borno State, Nigeria. Data were collected through interviews and focus group discussion in selected communities affected by Boko Haram. The findings revealed that the use of the CJTF yielded positive results as they helped the military in intelligence gathering, knowledge of the landscape, translation of the local language, and identification of Boko Haram members within the community and in combat operations. Challenges, such as the highhandedness and deceitful nature of some members, hampered the utility of the CJTF. Nigeria, like Cameroon, is among the African states that are battling with secessionism. There is scarcely a deep sense of unity and nationhood among Nigerians in different areas of national life. This study therefore examines the nexus between insecurity and secessionism in Nigeria. The paper argues that the demand for self-determination and the call for restructuring are inevitable in a country like Nigeria due to the character of the state, where good governance is a far cry for the masses. The study used the theory of deprivation to explain the growth in secessionist agitation. The qualitative method of focus group discussion and telephonic interviews were used to develop the content of the study. However, this paper found that the series of secessionist threats in Nigeria had reinforced insecurity in the affected areas, thereby leading to restrictions in the movement of people and threats to lives and properties. Thus, a more practical policy needs to be put in place and implemented in line with the developmental needs of the masses across the flashpoints of secessionist agitations in order to amicably address the issue of secession among the various ethnic groups in the country. Of the goals of sustainable development (SD), human capital and poverty reduction are seen as the means and end. As they combine to shape other goals, they are equally the targets. However, how the synergy responds to the overall Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cannot be divorced from the former's processes and government commitment. This underscores centrality of human capital (HC) to achievement of poverty reduction and food security priorities. This paper assesses HC development practice and utilisation process. Aim: The aim of the study was to identify barriers and benefits in establishing a model for integration of palliative care of cancer patients in daily clinical practice in tertiary health institutions. Methods: This was a qualitative design study using in‐depth interviews with four stakeholders and focus group discussions with 19 nurse managers using purposive sampling to select the participants, utilizing interpretive paradigm method. Need was ascertained for a model that would guide nursing care for cancer patients. Results: Barriers identified in relation to integrating palliative care in daily clinical practice included lack of hospital policies about palliative care activities, cultural influences, denial or rejection of diagnosis by patients, inappropriate attitude of health care workers, patients failing to keep check‐up appointments and financial implications of setting up a dedicated palliative care team. Benefits of the model were twofold: hospital outcomes and patients/family outcomes. Conclusions: Quality care for cancer patients/families calls for the adoption of clearly set out principles of palliative care as an integral component of daily practice. Challenges to implementation of palliative care services in hospitals can be overcome by establishing workable policies and allocating adequate funds for palliative care activities. Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights are fundamental human rights. Previous studies on gender and sexuality in displacement settings have often focused on sexual and gender-based violence and the reproductive health problems of women while underplaying their needs for sexual expression, pleasure and procreation. This paper examines the influence of conflict and displacement on gender relations, sexuality and natality of internally displaced women in Nigeria. It draws on data from a larger study in which focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were used to explore 52 women's gendered experiences with Boko Haram insurgency and displacement. A critical thematic analysis of data revealed that the women's relationships with their men were complex and ambiguous, characterised by both tensions and solidarity. The women saw their men as partners in their struggle against multi-level oppression, including the structural barriers that undermine their mutual sexual expressions and pleasure, as well as their desire to procreate and repopulate their decimated ancestral communities. We recommend collaborative efforts to promote and protect the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights of displaced women which includes building physical structures and living conditions that promote healthy, safe and pleasurable sexual expressions, and socio-political structures that create access to the long term social security. The informal sector in Nigeria has being recognized as an integral part of the country's economy and has contributed immensely in the development of entrepreneurship in the country. The aim of this paper is to investigate the role of the informal sector in the growth and development of entrepreneurship in Bauchi metropolis Bauchi state, Nigeria. To carry out the investigation, this paper adopted focus group discussion method as a basis of analysis. The result shows that the economy of the metropolis is largely informal and average earning in the sector is higher than that of the formal sector. The result also found out that the growing informal sector in the metropolis has inspired entrepreneurial spirit among the teeming unemployed youth in the metropolis. Inadequate finance, epileptic power supply, technological backwardness, illiteracy; insecurity are some factors militating against the development of the informal sector and entrepreneurship in the metropolis. To this end, it is recommended that the government should promote the sector through; adequate financing; bringing wide range of the informal sector activities into the formal sector without discouraging innovation and dynamism; promotion of enterprise culture which will induce self-reliance, risk-taking, and an environment which rewards effort and initiative. Despite a rigorous policy drive towards financial inclusion in Nigeria, and although the country has a high tele-density ratio, the vast unbanked largely poor remain excluded from the financial sector. Adopting a mixed method approach of the supplier and consumer sides of mobile money, using documentary analysis, focus groups, interviews, and surveys; this article relies on the diffusion of innovations theoretical framework to explore the utility of mobile money with a view to not only assess its application in the enhancement of financial inclusion, but also better tailor the current applications for these low-income users. We identify 4 factors (lack of customer demand and experimenters, lack of integration in the ecosystem, lack of trust and preference for effective local savings scheme and policy short-termism resulting in mobile money operational unsustainability) that are responsible for non-diffusion of mobile money. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young people aged 15 to 29 years of age. Ideation or suicidal thoughts, which precedes suicide is sometimes normalized and excused thereby missing avertable deaths within a given context. Understanding suicide ideation and the associated social correlates within contexts can provide cues on how to mitigate suicide. This paper examines the potential social factors that are shaping suicidal ideation among young people in two universities in Nigeria. Based on a mixed-method design, a survey was conducted among a proportionate sample of 500 young people (18–25years that are undergraduates). Four Focus Group Discussion sessions were also held among the same group and six semi-structured interviews with social workers at both universities. Quantitative evidence associated irregular financial support (OR = 0.60; p < 0.05) and broken intimate relationship (OR = 1.57; P < 0.05) with suicide ideation. Findings from the qualitative component also considered undergraduates that have academic challenges, engage in substance abuse, and have parents with marital problems to be prone to suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation among these young people is embedded in their network of relationships, which can be mitigated when the quality of support systems is responsive and adequately accessed. Aging is a natural occurrence often associated with decline in body functioning and common health conditions. With the emergency of new diseases, vulnerable groups like older adults are prone and more possibly to be infected. In the era of COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, health management of older adults becomes demanding with increasing ill-health, morbidity and mortality. This paper aims to investigate caregivers' lived experiences in health care management of older adults amid and post COVID-19 pandemic for quality of life and wellbeing in Nigeria. With the phenomenological approach in qualitative research, we sourced our data using focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDI) from 21 caregivers purposively selected from three health institutions based on their ownership in Nsukka. Data were analyzed thematically. Results revealed that though care-giving is perceived to be filial, it is no longer effectively provided owing to financial and health status of the care recipient. Other findings indicated that factors predicting responds to preventive measures in older adults' health care include disregard of information, inadequate geriatric knowledge and noncompliance of health information. Suggestions to ease challenges in health care demand of older adults were brought to fore. The paper explores the different strategies in managing operations and delivering services and compares them to current trends in academic libraries in Southwestern (SW) Nigeria. The author objectively and comparatively examined the different models of quality management (QM) and strategies, from which a framework of quality improvement for Nigerian university libraries was developed. The article employed a pragmatic approach to unearth the complexities of investigating the phenomenon in academic library environments. This paper discussed the findings of three studies (online survey, interview and focus groups) in this research and how they relate to the existing literature. A comprehensive analysis highlights challenges of university library operations in SW Nigeria while a pragmatic approach was used to achieve the objectives of the paper. The paper concluded that improvement in quality of service delivery and operations is certain if the proposed framework for QM implementation is embraced in Nigerian academic libraries. Employee participation, well established in pluralist democracies, is a crucial factor in the process of democratisation in developing economies. This paper contributes to this issue in Nigeria by focusing on the contribution industrial relations makes and contrasting it with the European experience. Specifically, the study investigates the employee participation forms which have developed in Nigeria. The research methodology is an adapted case study approach of 7 companies with international affiliations in Nigeria, and recent qualitative data from a focused group interview, involving key stake holders in the industrial relations framework, expanding the research to the broader socio-economic context in Nigeria. Despite the constraints of the research methodology the conclusion points at a rich variety of employee participation structures, which in some instances compare with European employee models. The paper examined factors that explained pesticide usage among maize farmers South Western zone of Nigeria. The study used primary data to accomplished the objectives of the study. The primary data were collected through focus group discussion, personal interview and detailed questionnaire administered to maize farmers in the study area. Multi-stage sampling technique was employed in this study. There are six States in South West geo-political zone; Two States were selected randomly from the Six States and Six Local Government Areas were randomly chosen from Ondo and Ekiti making a total of Twelve. Two Towns/Villages from each of the Local Government Areas were selected giving a total of Twenty-Four Towns/Villages' Proportional random sampling was used to select 472 maize farmers for the study. Data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study established that experience. Farm size, pest infestation, extension services and education status of respondents were critical determinant of pesticide usage among maize farmers in the study areas services. Health interventions introduced as part of donor-funded projects need careful planning if they are to survive when donor funding ends. In northeast Nigeria, the Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency and implementing partners recognized this when introducing a Village Health Worker (VHW) Scheme in 2016. VHWs are a new cadre of community health worker, providing maternal, newborn and child health-related messages, basic healthcare and making referrals to health facilities. This paper presents a qualitative study focussing on the VHW Scheme's sustainability and, hence, contributes to the body of literature on sustaining donor-funded interventions as well as presenting lessons aimed at decision-makers seeking to introduce similar schemes in other Nigerian states and in other low- and middle-income settings. In 2017 and 2018, we conducted 37 semi-structured interviews and 23 focus group discussions with intervention stakeholders and community members. Based on respondents' accounts, six key actions emerged as essential in promoting the VHW Scheme's sustainability: government ownership and transition of responsibilities, adapting the scheme for sustainability, motivating VHWs, institutionalizing the scheme within the health system, managing financial uncertainties and fostering community ownership and acceptance. Our study suggests that for a community health worker intervention to be sustainable, reflection and adaption, government and community ownership and a phased transition of responsibilities are crucial. This paper investigates the definitions and onset of an old person in South-Western Nigeria. Conventionally, anyone who has reached the age of 60 or 65 years is regarded as the onset of an old person. But on contrary, this recent study is strongly emphasizing that 50 years and above is the onset of an old person in South-Western Nigeria. Obviously, the definitions and onset of an old person are controversial, yet, revealing in this paper. The study captured 13 Local Government Areas in Lagos state while 11 Local Government Areas were covered in Oyo state. The study employed focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs). However, 938 old persons were interviewed through questionnaire administration in Lagos and Oyo states of South-Western Nigeria. The univariate, FGDs, and IDIs were employed in the analyses of this research. The major findings of this study are the following: firstly, that there are different dimensions of the definitions of an old person that include frailty, inactivity, loss of strength, respect, blessedness, sickness, growing old, and inability to do hard work. Secondly, that someone who has reached the age of 50 years and above can be regarded as an old person, which is the onset of an old person in South-Western Nigeria society. On the basis of earlier findings, the study hereby recommends that anyone who has attained the age of 50 years and above should be recognized, regarded, and honored as an Elder by the State Government of South-Western Nigeria society where they are presently residing. Implementation science embraces collaboration between academic researchers and key stakeholders/implementers for the dual purpose of capacity building and context-adaptation. Co-production ensures that knowledge created with inputs from various groups of stakeholders is more reflective of local contexts. This paper highlights the experiences of academic researchers and non-academic implementers in collaborating to design implementation strategies for improving access to sexual and reproductive information and services for adolescents. Data were collected through primary and secondary sources. Detailed review of project documents such as minutes of research meetings, reports of workshops and outputs of group work activities enabled detailed description of the processes and steps of co-designing implementation strategies. Information on experiences and perspectives of benefits of the collaborative were collected through in-depth interviews of non-academic partners and focus group discussion with academic researchers. Narrative synthesis was done for information extracted through document review. Thematic analysis of qualitative interviews was done. The process of designing implementation strategies happened in three chronological steps of setting up the collaborative, selecting intervention areas and convening partners' meetings to design strategies. Specific activities include stakeholder engagement, situation analysis, selection of intervention areas, designing the implementation strategies and pre-testing implementation tools. The process of analysing and selecting collaborators was iterative, and facilitated by having an 'insider' key informant. Working with key stakeholders enabled knowledge sharing and exchange among partners. Information sharing within the collaborative facilitated shifting of mindsets about adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and contextual adaptation of names and labels given to strategies. Co-producing implementation strategies with non-academic implementers enabled stakeholder ownership of implementation strategies and set the scene for their adoption in implementation settings. Some challenges of co-production of knowledge are that it is time consuming; involves several iterations that may influence coherence of strategies; involves multiple interests and priorities and poses a threat to fidelity. Purpose – Information and communication technology (ICT) stands out as a major indicator and driver of the modern age. It catalytically advances globalization processes across professions, disciplines and agencies across international boundaries. In spite of the widespread utilization of ICT, Nigeria in particular and Africa in general lag behind in the ICT revolution. Striving to modernise and develop, though, Nigeria is rather dependent on the developed world for ICT access and utilization. Nigeria accesses ICT, indeed a great volume of the access rather comes through the second-hand market. The study aims to integrate theoretical orientations of symbolism and rationalism to empirically explain second-hand ICT utilization in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected through 30 in-depth interviews (IDIs) and six focus group discussions (FGDs) among sellers and consumers of imported second-hand ICT at Abeokuta, Ibadan and Lagos cities in Nigeria. The data was collected between July and November 2010. The research is an extract from a larger study on "The dynamics of the Tokunbo phenomenon and second-hand economy in South-Western Nigeria". Findings – The paper concludes that as much as imported second-hand ICT satisfies consumer modernity and development needs, it swells up Nigeria's e-waste. The bulk of the used ICT exported into Nigeria are non-usable scrap, while those that are functional or usable are at the tail end of their life cycles. By symbolically rationalizing imported second-hand ICT utilization, the Nigerian population simply pays for the evacuation of e-waste from producing countries of the developed world to Nigeria. Nigeria is yet to develop a wholesome policy to address second-hand ICT import and grapple with e-waste challenge. The economic and health costs of imported e-waste are on Nigeria and Nigerians. Originality/value – The primary focus of the paper is on second-hand ICT utilization in Nigeria. Background Absenteeism in the health sector is increasingly seen as a form of harmful rule-breaking, with health workers receiving a salary although they are not present to provide care. It is a barrier to achieving universal health coverage yet remains widespread in primary health centres (PHCs) in Nigeria and many other low-resource settings. Traditional approaches to combatting absenteeism have relied on anti-corruption measures such as promoting accountability and transparency. However, more needs to be understood about the social and cultural realities, including perceptions and norms enabling or constraining the application of such measures in Nigeria and in similar contexts. Methods We conducted 34 in-depth interviews (IDIs) with frontline health workers and their managers/supervisors and two focus group discussions (FDGs) with service users (n=22) in Enugu State, South Eastern Nigeria. We discussed their experiences and views about absenteeism, allowing the respondents' framings to emerge. We adopted a mixed approach of narrative analysis and phenomenology to examine respondents' narratives - identifying the concepts and social constructs within the narratives that manifested through the language used. Results Stakeholders acknowledged the problem of absenteeism but had differing perspectives on its dynamics. Health workers distinguished two forms of absenteeism: one as a mundane, everyday response to the poorly funded health system; and the other, brazen and often politically enabled absenteeism, where health workers whom powerful politicians protect are absent without facing consequences. There is a general feeling of powerlessness among both health service providers and service users confronted by politically backed absentees as the power dynamics in the health sector resonate with experiences in other spheres of life in Nigeria. Health workers rationalised mundane, technical absenteeism, adjusted to it and felt it should be accommodated in the health system. Service users are often unsure about who is absent and why, but when they notice absenteeism, they often ascribe it to wider system malpractices that characterise public services. Conclusion Interventions to tackle absenteeism and other forms of health sector corruption should be sensitive to socio-cultural and political contexts that shape everyday lives in specific contexts. The paper examined the impact of technology variables on access to information by undergraduates in the digital libraries of federal universities in Nigeria. The study was an empirical research which adopted Ex-post-facto as the design. The questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 1,506 respondents drawn, using a multi-stage technique, from the population of 30,121 undergraduates in addition to the entire 21 library staff of seven federal universities purposively selected from southern Nigeria. Focus group discussion and interview sessions were also used to complement the questionnaire responses. Data generated were analysed using frequency and percentages. Responses from the focus group discussion and the interview were analysed qualitatively. The findings revealed that technology variables such as system usability, interface design and content usefulness make a low impact on the undergraduates' access to information. It was recommended among others that training programs should be organised by the libraries to equip the undergraduates with the digital literacy skills required for effective access to information. The study investigated the performance of the Primary Health Care Programme in Nigeria using a senatorial district as a case study with the instrumentality of health information literacy. The choice of Central Senatorial District, Edo Staten was purposive as all the PHC in the country operates under similar socioeconomic and political conditions. The rationale behind the investigation was to ascertain the extent to which the objectives of PHC programmes have been meant as a fundamental component of the nation's healthcare delivery systems. In addition, to focus group discussion, copies of the questionnaire being the major instrument for data collection were distributed among286 members of staff that were accidentally sampled from 28 PHC centres. The sampled population comprised 21.3% Community Health Extension Workers, 13.6% Cleaners, 13.6%Security, 5.3% Orderlies, and 5.3% Messengers. The study revealed a shortage of professionals as only 3(1%) were Doctors, 3(1%) Anaesthetic Nurses and 2(0.8%)were Pharmacists. There was a dearth of professional Medical Records Clerks in the PHC underscored the abysmally low health literacy rate among the engaged personnel and those accessing the services as beneficiaries. The study concluded on the submission that enriched health literacy, adequate funding, and employment of skilled personnel, PHC will record appreciable performance in the future. Background Maternal mortality has been an issue of global importance, with continued efforts by the international development community towards its reduction. The provision of high quality maternal healthcare has been identified as a key strategy in preventing maternal mortality. Gendered intrahousehold power structures, gendered dynamics of resource allocation and women's limited ability in decision-making can have a huge impact on maternal health-seeking behaviour and overall health status. Using a gender lens, this study explores the root causes of women's limited access to and utilisation of maternal healthcare services in rural areas of Edo State, Nigeria. Methods This qualitative study involved the analysis of data collected from gender- and age-desegregated focus group discussions (FDGs) in 20 communities in Etsako East and Esan South East local government areas of Edo State, Nigeria. Focus group participants comprised women between the ages of 15–45 y who have been pregnant within the last 5 y and their male spouses and partners of varying ages. A total of 20 FGDs were conducted. Coded transcripts were reviewed and analysed using the gender framework as an analytical guide. Results Most responses indicated that women did not entirely have the power to make decisions regarding when to seek care during pregnancy. Women's experiences of access to quality care showed intersecting areas of gender and social economic status (SES) and how they impact on access to health. Many of the responses suggested high levels of economic marginalisation among women with women being financially dependent on their spouses and partners for pregnancy healthcare-related costs. Furthermore, a man's financial status determined the type of care his spouse or partner sought. Women identified a high workload as an issue during pregnancy and a barrier to accessing maternal healthcare services. The role of men within households was generally perceived as that of financial providers, therefore a husband's support was commonly constructed to solely mean financial support. Conclusion This paper brings attention to the role of gender and SES in producing and sustaining limitations to women's access to quality care. Interventions geared towards supporting women's financial independence is an important step towards improving their access to skilled healthcare, more so are interventions that improve women's decision-making capacities. Low-resource settings often have limited use of local data for health system planning and decision-making. To promote local data use for decision-making and priority setting, we propose an adapted framework: a data-informed platform for health (DIPH) aimed at guiding coordination, bringing together key data from the public and private sectors on inputs and processes. In working to transform this framework from a concept to a health systems initiative, we undertook a series of implementation research activities including background assessment, testing and scaling up of the intervention. This first paper of four reports the feasibility of the approach in a district health systems context in five districts of India, Nigeria and Ethiopia. We selected five districts using predefined criteria and in collaboration with governments. After scoping visits, an in-depth field visit included interviews with key health stakeholders, focus group discussions with service-delivery staff and record review. For analysis, we used five dimensions of feasibility research based on the TELOS framework: technology and systems, economic, legal and political, operational and scheduling feasibility. We found no standardized process for data-based district level decision-making, and substantial obstacles in all three countries. Compared with study areas in Ethiopia and Nigeria, the health system in Uttar Pradesh is relatively amenable to the DIPH, having relative strengths in infrastructure, technological and technical expertise, and financial resources, as well as a district-level stakeholder forum. However, a key challenge is the absence of an effective legal framework for engagement with India's extensive private health sector. While priority-setting may depend on factors beyond better use of local data, we conclude that a formative phase of intervention development and pilot-testing is warranted as a next step. Background: A new contraceptive microarray patch (MAP) for women is in development. Input on this method from potential end-users early in the product development process is important to guide design decisions. This paper presents the qualitative component of a broader study exploring initial acceptability of the MAP and selected product features. The qualitative research was intended to identify product features that are most salient to end-users and to contextualize preferences around them with subsequent research planned to assess quantitatively the relative importance of those features. Methods: We conducted 16 focus group discussions and 20 in-depth interviews with women and 20 IDIs with family planning providers in New Delhi, India, and Ibadan, Nigeria. Input from the MAP developer served to identify plausible features of the MAP to include in the focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed into English, coded, and analyzed to examine key dimensions of MAP features. Results: Many participants viewed the MAP as potentially easy to use. Interest in self-application after learning correct use was high, especially in India. Participants favored formulations affording protection from pregnancy for three or six months, if not longer. Interest in a shorter-acting MAP was particularly low in Nigeria. Non-desirable MAP features included a potential localized skin rash and pain at application. Views on patch size and location of application were related to the potential for rash and pain, with a desire to permit discreet use and minimize pain. Results indicate that the side effect profile, effectiveness, and pricing are also important factors for acceptability and uptake of a future product. Conclusion: Study findings indicate that a contraceptive MAP is of potential interest to women and that specific MAP attributes will be important to acceptability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – The purposes of this paper were to find out the problematic factors in providing library and information services to Nigeria prisoners and the strategies for solving them, thereby enhancing adequate provision of the required services to these prisoners. Design/methodology/approach – Seven main prisons were used for the study with a population of about 6,430 prisoners and 21 prison library/welfare workers. The sample size was 1,322 prisoners and the whole 21 workers. Questionnaires and focus group discussion (FGD) were the main instruments used for data collection. Data from the questionnaire were analyzed using frequencies and mean scores while data from FGD were analyzed descriptively. Findings – Major findings showed that problems like funding, censorship of reading materials, restrictions due to prison policy and staffing hinder to a high extent the provision of library and information services for these prisoners. Also, improved funding of the prisons and prison libraries, services and resource sharing with other libraries, NGOs and other information providers were all seen as strategies to enhance adequate library and information services provision to the prisoners. Originality/value – Library and information services are needed by everybody in today’s society. Prisoners, although incarcerated, will find useful a variety of library and information services provided to them. This paper delved into the problems of providing library and information services to Nigeria prisoners. Background: Young people (aged 10 to 24 years) in sub-Saharan Africa bear a huge and disproportionate burden of poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes due to inequalities and discrimination in accessing sexual and reproductive health services (SRHS). This study assessed the experiences and perceptions of discrimination among young people seeking SRH services in Primary Health Centers (PHCs) using an intersectionality lens. Methods: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was undertaken in six local government areas (LGAs) in Ebonyi State, southeast Nigeria. The LGAs comprise both urban and rural locations. The study population for the quantitative survey consisted of 1025 randomly selected young boys and girls aged 15–24 years. Eleven focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with the young people. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed for quantitative data, while thematic analysis was performed for the qualitative data, using NVivo. Results: A total of 16.68% participants in the survey reported that young girls/women were treated badly/unfairly compared to young boys/men when seeking SRH services in PHCs; 15.22% reported that young clients get treated badly/unfairly from adults; and 12.49% reported that young clients with poor economic status were treated unfairly. Respondents also reported that young clients with disability (12.12%), and those who are poorly educated or uneducated (10.63%) are treated badly by healthcare providers when they access SRH services. Young people in urban areas were about 7 times more likely to believe that girls/young women are treated badly than boys/young men when seeking SRH services in PHCs compared to those who live in rural areas (p < 0.001). Among the young girls/women, residing in urban areas, being poor and in school increased the likelihood of getting treated badly/unfairly when receiving SRH services by 4 times (p < 0.001). The qualitative results revealed that health workers were generally harsh to young people seeking SRH services and the level of harshness or unfriendliness of the health workers varied depending on the young person's social identity. Conclusion: There are varieties of intersecting factors that contribute to the discrimination of young clients in PHCs. This underscores the urgent need to prioritize intersectional perspectives in the design and implementation of interventions that will improve access and use of SRH services by young people.
