At the beginning of the 20th century, the eclectic artist Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo patented two innovative methods for polychrome printing on fabrics and textiles, giving life to Fortuny fabric production in Venice. The first patent was related to colour application, while the second to a special machine that allows continuous printing using cylindrical rollers. Despite the descriptions, the methodology and materials used remain a secret. In collaboration with the Fortuny Museum in Venice, this research aimed at studying and identifying the different steps of Fortuny printing methodologies. Printing matrices, fabrics and raw materials found in the artist's studio were analysed in a multi-analytical campaign through digital microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), μ-Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Three main pigments were identified in paper samples: ivory black, a copper-based pigment, and a carbon black pigment with ultramarine for blues. The pigments were bound with linseed oil and colophony in varying proportions. Polychrome silk fabrics were dyed with a base colour, and then the coloured patterns were superimposed by continuous printing. Prussian blue was identified as one of the textile inks. The object of this study is unusual for both its material and technique. It is an oil painting on sheets of paper glued to a canvas made of linen fibres, thereby showing some execution peculiarities. It depicts the Virgin of Thessalonica in a hieratic attitude. The painting is attributed to the Salento‐born artist Giuseppe Verrio (1639) for the church of the Theatine religious Order in Lecce, Italy, in which it is still placed, on the left altar of the transept. To truly understand and appreciate a work of art, it is important to have a basic knowledge of the materials and techniques used by the artist. For a better understanding of the execution techniques and to study the original materials and those that have been added over time, the painting was examined using the following analytical techniques: microscopic examination of cross‐sections, μ‐Raman spectroscopy and pyrolysis gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (Py‐GC‐MS). The data indicate that Verrio used different earthy, mineral and manufactured pigments, an organic dye used only on the paper, oil as a binder, and varnish as a protectant. Synthetic cannabinoids (SC) are extremely prevalent within the prison system and cause problems for prisoners, law enforcement and health services. SC are often soaked into paper then posted into prisons therefore one of the aims of this research is to collaborate with Rapiscan Systems Ltd. and local prisons in England to measure the effectiveness of trace detection methods for the indication of SC in prison post using the Itemiser 3E®. To ensure compounds did not go undetected, samples with Ion Trap Mobility Spectrometry™ peaks indicative of synthetic cannabinoids on the Itemiser 3E® were analysed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to identify chemical characteristics which allowed comparison to reference spectra. Sample data spanning three years from one prison's Itemiser 3E® were collated to identify trends in drug prevalence and the influence of library updates. To date, the method has identified four compounds: 5F‐MDMB‐PICA, MMB-4en-PICA, 4F‐MDMB‐BUTINACA and MDMB-4en-PINACA on prison post which were not already included on, or needed confirmatory analysis to update, the Itemiser 3E® library. As a result, the libraries on prison Itemiser 3E®s have been updated to ensure future detection of such compounds. Trends and influences from the processed Itemiser 3E® data were also reported back to the West Midlands Prison Group. This research directly benefitted both the West Midlands Prison Group and Rapiscan Systems Ltd. and it is anticipated that the continuation of this research could be expanded to a national scale. • Prisons submitted samples for confirmatory analysis after screening by Itemiser 3E®. • GC-MS, LC-MS and NMR identified synthetic cannabinoids in eight of the 47 samples. • 5F‐MDMB‐PICA, MMB-4en-PICA, 4F‐MDMB‐BUTINACA and MDMB-4en-PINACA were identified. • Confirmatory analysis aided the generation of Itemiser 3E® library definitions. • This demonstrates the importance of the screening, confirmation and feedback cycle. The age of a relatively old document is one of the pending issues to be resolved in the field of forensic documentary examination. Although nowadays there are a variety of analytical methodologies focused in the analysis of inks for dating documents, the paper analysis has attained little attention. This work aims to develop two complementary approaches for estimating the age of documents based on paper analysis employing the pyrolysis technique coupled to gas chromatography with detection by mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS): (i) a direct approach using the pyrolytic fingerprints and multivariate regression with artificially aged samples, and (ii) an indirect approach based on the identification of compounds characteristic of the document period. The direct approach has successfully allowed the age estimation of relatively old documents under police custody (up to 30 years of age) and the determination of a relation between the natural and the accelerated aging of paper under the used conditions. This approach is applicable to papers that have the same (or similar) composition and have been stored under comparable storage conditions. Thin film microextraction (TFME), which is based on the retention of target analytes in a thin polymeric coating, is a powerful sample treatment technique with multiple applications. This article describes an easy and cheap procedure to synthesize polystyrene membranes which can be used as sorptive phases in TFME. The polymeric film is formed by the simple deposition of a thin polymeric layer over a conventional laboratory paper that acts as inert support. The synthesis has been studied and the resulting material has been characterized by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The thin film has been analytically evaluated using the determination of methadone in urine samples by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) as proof of concept problem. A pipette tip manifold, that allows the confinement of the film while permits the sample and solvents handling, has been designed for the extraction. The developed method provides a good linearity (R 2 = 0.9986) and sensitivity (limit of quantification of 10 μg/L), especially if the low sample volume (200 μL) used is considered. The precision (relative standard deviation better than 14%) and relative recovery values (average value of 106% for five independent samples) demonstrated the potential of the approach. An analytical survey of 20 paper and board (P&B) materials intended for food use was carried out with the aim to identify chemicals with a potential to migrate into foods. Representative materials covering a range of uses (primary and secondary packaging and article for take away foods) were obtained from distributors. A screening approach was applied by means of solvent extraction with subsequent analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. A large number of analytes were detected, and a chemometric approach was used to explore the data. Principal component analysis was used to identify and select some compounds as markers for sample classification. In the corrugated and printed packaging, it is worth emphasizing the presence of residual solvents, probably coming from printing inks, as well as hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds, mainly toluene and plasticizers linked also to the recycled pulp content such as diisobutyl phthalate or diisopropylnaphthalenes, whereas in the plastic-laminated samples, triacetin was identified as the prevailing compound. A literature search for safety data or legislative restrictions of the identified substances was performed. Additionally, the semi-quantification of the compounds in the packaging allowed a worst case estimation of food contamination by means of the infinite total migration model; occasionally, migration estimations overcame the specific migration limits. The chosen analytical methods coupled with a chemometric approach proved to be an effective way to describe the data; it may be concluded that only the simultaneous consideration of several chemicals with a multivariate approach allowed the investigated packaging materials to be distinguished. Microstructural changes in paper after heat-induced inkless eco-printing (HIEP) and pyrolysis productions of paper were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-G/MS). The results were as follows: (1) When the heat-induced temperature is between 350°C and 600°C, slight scratches are left on the paper surface after scan printing, but click printing leaves obvious concave indentations. Both of these printing methods can create a clear and clean boundary with no significant carbonized microstructure. (2) Experimental studies show that paper undergoes true pyrolysis at 500°C. The simulated printing test shows that the fibers on the paper surface exhibit a yellow discoloration that meets printing requirements. (3) Compared with current laser printing techniques and laser inkless eco-printing (LIEP), HIEP has the advantages of avoiding the de-inking process during paper recycling and preserving paper strength better than LIEP. Abstract: Adhesives are often responsible for off-flavors in food in contact with packaging. The aim of this investigation was to identify by GC–O–MS the odorous compounds in five different types of adhesive (hotmelt, vinyl acetate ethylene, starch, polyvinyl acetate and acrylic) used in food packaging. In order to obtain a substantial number of compounds, they were extracted by two complementary extraction methods: HS-SPE and HS-SPME. Fifteen minutes extraction time using PDMS fiber for hotmelt adhesive and DVD/CAR/PDMS fiber for the other adhesives were the best conditions for defining a representative solvent-free adhesive extract using a rapid and simple D-GC–O technique. Thirty-three compounds were identified by GC–O–MS. These include butyric acid, acetic acid, methyl butyrate, 1-butanol and nonanal, which were present in most of the adhesives under study producing cheesy, rancid, sour, medicinal and green aromas, respectively. The concentrations were determined, the most abundant compound being acetic acid with concentrations from 22.9 to 8930μgg−1 of adhesive. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A set of inks was analyzed using Py/GC/MS technique. They were prepared following some ancient Armenian recipes and then analyzed after being dried in air to obtain solid samples. A simple analytical procedure was adopted which excludes any treatment of the samples and consists in introducing the solid sample directly into the injector of the furnace pyrolyzer. Inks were also written on whatman paper by calamum and analyses of papers containing ink were carried out. A real sample analysis was reported. Comparing the pyrograms it was possible to discriminate fragments derived from ink, from that formed by the decomposition of paper by the influence of ink. In order to understand the origin of the fragments formed during the pyrolysis of inks the standard compounds used to prepare them were carried out, too. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The paper manufacturing process remained unchanged for many centuries, until, in the nineteenth century, the crisis of rags led industrialized countries to patent new production processes with different raw materials. This study deals with this period of transition by analyzing four samples stored at the archives of Superintendency Beni Architettonici per il Paesaggio e per il Patrimonio Storico Artistico ed Etnoantropologico (BAPPDAD) of Venice Lagoon, based in the Palazzo Ducale. The samples were analyzed by FT-IR (ATR), SEM-EDS, HPLC-MS/MS and Py-GC/MS. These techniques allow the characterization of various raw materials and adhesives used in various stages of paper production. These analyses have found a gradual introduction of ground wood in the composition of papers from the mid-nineteenth century, and the use of rosin as glue only in more recent documents.
