Horses, just like people, need to eat a variety of things to meet their nutritional requirements. If their diet is out of balance, then problems occur.

Foal scores from the International Sporthorse Registry and Oldenburg Registry North America were used for statistical and genetic analysis. Scored traits include type and conformation (TC), athletic ability of movement (AM), overall development as related to age (OD), and total score (TS) calculated as a weighted average of TC, AM, and OD. Premium status (PS) was analyzed as a binary trait. Preliminary statistical analysis determined significant fixed effects of sex, year of birth, dam breed, and inspection period. Offspring of stallions with only one offspring in the dataset and non-warmblood sires were deleted. Non-warmblood or non-Thoroughbred dams were also removed. Variance components were estimated using ASReml methodology to obtain genetic parameters. Traits were moderately to highly heritable with heritabilities of 0.45, 0.47, 0.49, and 0.55 for TC, AM, OD, and TS, respectively. PS had a heritability of 0.32 on a binary scale and 0.51 when transformed to the normal scale. Genetic correlations between TC, AM, OD, and TS were all high and favorable, ranging from 0.80 to 0.99. Genetic correlations with PS were inestimable. Foal inspection scores are heritable and should respond to selection. Selection for improvement in one trait should result in improvement in all traits. If genetic parameters can be correlated to data obtained in older horses, incorporating foal scores in selection decisions could improve warmblood breeding programs. Utilizing foal inspection scores should be beneficial to breeding objectives of the International Sporthorse Registry and Oldenburg Registry North America. Master of Science

The objective of these studies was to contribute to the understanding and assessment of thyroid function in horses. The first study evaluated methods of assessing thyroid function in horses, including validation of an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for measuring equine thyroid hormones and development and assessment of a thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) response test. Our data indicated that EIA is an acceptable method for the measurement of total (T) and free (F) thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in equine plasma. Its measurements are not equivalent to values obtained by radioimmunoassay (RIA), but they can be calibrated to predict corresponding RIA values. A protocol was developed for TRH response tests involving administration of 1 mg TRH intravenously, with blood sample collection immediately before, 2.5, 5.0, and 24 h after administration. Analysis of plasma TT4, FT4, TT3, and FT3 revealed that the magnitude of hormone response was best approximated by the area under the curve of hormone plotted against time and by the absolute change in thyroid hormone concentration. Baseline concentrations, peak concentrations, and percent of baseline values were not as well able to predict the magnitude of hormone response. The second study assessed the effects of exercise and feed composition on thyroid status. Thirteen mature Arabian geldings, adapted to either a high sugar and starch (SS) or high fat and fiber (FF) feed, underwent 15 wk of exercise training followed by a treadmill exercise test. The TRH response tests performed before training, after training, and the morning after the exercise test revealed that the exercise test decreased the TT4 and FT4 response, whereas feeding of high levels of sugars and starches increased the response of TT3 and FT3. During the first four weeks of training, increased TT4 and FT4 concentrations occurred simultaneously with increased nonesterified fatty acid concentrations, decreased triglyceride concentrations, and increased insulin sensitivity. The increase in TT4 and FT4 may have provided the cellular signaling necessary for increased lipolysis and insulin sensitivity. These metabolic changes facilitate the increases in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism that are needed to fulfill the additional energy requirements of regular exercise. The third study assessed thyroid status in ponies with different laminitic histories. Total T4, FT4, TT3, and FT3 were measured during March and May 2004 in 126 ponies that were categorized as either previously laminitic (PL; n = 54) or never laminitic (NL; n = 72) and evaluated for current laminitis in May (CL; n = 13). Decreased concentrations of TT4 and FT4 were found in PL ponies when compared to NL ponies in March (P = 0.018, 0.020) and May (P = 0.018, 0.001). However, TT4 and FT4 concentrations in CL ponies were not different than concentrations in NL ponies in May (P = 0.82, 0.72), and when retrospectively separated out in March, were not different than NL ponies (P = 0.90, 0.84). Therefore, basal thyroid hormone concentrations are not useful as a predictor or hormonal characteristic of pasture-associated laminitis. The decreased TT4 and FT4 in PL ponies may be an indication of a response or compensation to laminitis and may facilitate the metabolic changes necessary to cope with the disease. Master of Science

Diets rich in hydrolyzable carbohydrates induce a hyperglycemic/insulinemic response and may increase the incidence of metabolic disorders associated with some types of laminitis, exertional rhabdomyolysis and osteochondrosis in horses. This study applied the minimal model of glucose and insulin dynamics to determine the effect of diet on metabolites and hormones that regulate glucose metabolism in young horses. Twelve Thoroughbred foals were raised on pasture and supplemented twice daily with a feed high in either sugar and starch (SS) or fat and fiber (FF). As weanlings (age 199 ± 19 d, weight 274 ± 18 kg), the subjects underwent a modified frequent sampling intravenous glucose tolerance test during which they remained in stalls and had access to grass hay and water ad libitum. Samples were colleted at -60, -45, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60 , 70 , 80, 90, 100, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300, 330 and 360 min with a glucose bolus of 300 mg/kg BW at 0 min and an insulin bolus of 1.5 mU/kg BW at 20 min. Plasma was analyzed for glucose, insulin, growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations. Insulin sensitivity, glucose effectiveness, acute insulin response to glucose and disposition index were derived using Minmod Millennium and WinSAAM software. Diet groups were compared using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test or the sign test. Time interactions were compared using a mixed model with repeated effects. Rank-ordered linear regression was used for correlations. Basal glucose did not differ between groups (P = 0.75). There was nearly a trend towards higher basal (P = 0.11), and median insulin was higher in the sugar and starch foals at all 36 sample points (P = 0.030). The basal glucose:basal insulin ratio for the sugar and starch supplemented foals was lower than for fat and fiber foals (P = 0.025). Insulin sensitivity (SI) was lower in foals fed sugar and starch than foals fed fat and fiber (P = 0.007). Acute insulin response to glucose was directly correlated to weight (r = 0.78; P = 0.003) and inversely correlated with SI (r = -0.55; P = 0.067). The glucose:insulin ratio was directly correlated to SI (r = 0.92; P < 0.001). Growth hormone concentrations were increased from basal from 19 to 180 min after the glucose dose (P < 0.05). Basal IGF-I was higher (P = 0.006) in the SS group compared to the FF group. Concentrations of total IGF-I increased with time (P = 0.002) in the SS group. The change in IGF-I concentration from baseline to the end of the study was positively correlated (r = 0.72; P = 0.008) to the area under the insulin curve from 0 to 80 min. Basal IGF-I was inversely correlated to SI (r = 0.71; P = 0.015). These results show that the metabolic response to a diet high in hydrolyzable carbohydrates differs from the response to a fat and fiber meal resembling forage. Weanlings adapted to meals high in glucose equivalents have higher insulin and IGF-I secretion as compared to foals adapted to a fat and fiber feed, possibly contributing to lower insulin sensitivity observed in these foals. Such deviations may contribute to metabolic dysfunction and osteochondrosis in horses fed grain diets. Master of Science

Determining intake of feeds in horses is an important factor in incorporating supplements in their diets. Fecal recoveries (R), fecal output (FO), dry matter digestibility (DMD) and dry matter intake (DMI) were estimated using alkanes as markers in 8 thoroughbred geldings. The experiment compared two diets in a 2 X 2 latin square experiment. The diets were mixed grass hay only (H) and the same hay plus a cereal by-product (H + CBP). The cereal by-product (CBP) was the high fat component added to feeds at Virginia Tech's Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The apparent digestibility of ether extract (EE) and other nutrients in the H and H + CBP, as well as the partial digestibility of CBP were also determined. The periods were 21 d each with a dietary accommodation period followed by eight days of dosing the even chain alkanes dotriacontaine (C32) and hexatriacontane (C36) as external markers. Total collection (TC) was performed the last 4 d of dosing. The results show that mean recoveries of alkanes were close to 100%, but the range for individual alkanes was wide, and the pattern of recoveries for alkanes of different chain length was inconsistent from feed to feed. The results also indicate that mean estimates of the DMI, DMD and FO of a feed, such as H or H + CBP, are determined with reasonable accuracy by means of alkane markers. In contrast, alkane estimates of DMI and DMD in an individual horse fail to predict corresponding TC estimates. The alkane estimate of FO in an individual horse predicts a TC value with error of 16.4%. The CBP was found to be an excellent source of EE, CP and fiber but a poor source of Ca. Master of Science

This study investigated effects of diet and probiotic supplement on stress in Thoroughbred foals at weaning. Twenty foals, whose dams were paired by age and breeding date, then randomly assigned to one of two diets prior to parturition, were used. Two groups were maintained on mixed grass pastures and fed supplements, one high in sugar and starch (SS) and one high in fat and fiber (FF) that met or exceeded NRC requirements. Half the foals on each diet were fed a commercial probiotic (Probios) containing lactic acid bacteria, while the rest were given a placebo. Plasma, fecal samples and behavioral ethograms were collected for four days pre- and post-weaning, and an ACTH response test was administered 48 h post-weaning. Cortisol, lactate, IgG, IgA and a-tocopherol were analyzed in plasma, volatile fatty acids and pH in feces. Foals fed FF had higher concentrations of IgA (P = 0.006), IgG (P = 0.012) and a-tocopherol (P = 0.005). Butyric and valeric acid concentrations were higher in feces of SS but not FF foals (P = 0.052), which may reflect better adaptation to forage in FF foals. Foals supplemented with probiotic had higher fecal lactate (P = 0.002) and lower fecal acetate (P = 0.0003) concentrations, suggesting that the lactic acid bacteria survived to the hindgut. Probiotic supplementation did not appear to benefit foals at weaning. Supplementation with FF may improve immune status and encourage a more diverse intestinal microbial population, enabling foals to better cope with the physiological stresses of weaning. Two studies were conducted on endurance horses predominantly of Arabian breeding participating in an 80 km ride dedicated to research in April 2001 (Trial 1) and April 2002 (Trial 2). Objectives were to determine effects of endurance exercise, antioxidant supplementation, and a feed rich in fiber and fat vs. a high fat sweet feed on immunoglobulin A and G concentrations as well as identify selective IgA deficiency in endurance horses of Arabian breeding. There were no effects of distance in Trial 1 on IgA (P = 0.73) or IgG (P = 0.18) concentrations. In Trial 2, IgA concentrations increased (P = 0.05) and IgG concentrations increased (P = 0.006) after the start of the race. There were no effects of antioxidant supplementation on IgA (P = 0.16), IgG (P = 0.16), and IgM (P = 0.70) concentrations. There were no diet effects on IgA (P = 0.80), IgG (P = 0.59), and IgM (P = 0.54) concentrations. There were horses in both trials that were deficient in IgA only. Concentrations of IgG and IgM were within normal ranges, and there were no differences in training, performance and transportation variables, IgG concentrations, antioxidant supplementation, and feed supplementation compared to the horses with normal IgA concentrations. The concentration of IgM was higher in IgA deficient horses in Trial 1 (P = 0.035) and Trial 2 (P = 0.017). Horses with deficient IgA tended to be associated with health problems commonly found in humans and dogs affected with selective IgA deficiency. Master of Science
