This study investigates how El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modulates winter cold anomalies over central Eurasia (CE) using reanalysis data during 1950–2019. It is found that ENSO can significantly influence winter air temperature over CE mainly through modulating the strength and location of the cyclonic anomaly of Ural blocking (UB) or long‐lived UB events. A strong (weak) cyclonic anomaly of UB on the southeastern (eastern) side of the Ural Mountains tends to occur over midlatitude (high‐latitude) Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. Such anomalous circulation leads to a strong (weak) cold anomaly over CE, especially over East Asia, due to enhanced (weakened) cold air advection toward the CE during La Niña (El Niño). The UB‐related cyclonic anomaly in the midlatitude (high latitude) side of Eurasia is shown to be related to weakened (enhanced) eastward extension of strong westerly winds over midlatitude Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. Plain Language Summary: Observations show that in recent decades a strong cold anomaly appears over Eurasia, especially over central Eurasia (CE). This cold anomaly shows notable variations on interannual, decadal and interdecadal timescales. However, what factors lead to its interannual variations is not well understood. Here we show that El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events can influence Eurasian winter air temperature by modulating the strength and location of the cyclonic anomaly of Ural blocking (UB) or the frequency of long‐lived UB events. A La Niña (El Niño) favors a strong (weak) cyclonic anomaly circulation located in the southeastern (eastern) side of the Ural Mountains in the midlatitudes (high latitudes), which leads to a strong (weak) cold anomaly over CE especially in the low latitude Eurasia (i.e., East Asia) through enhanced (weakened) cold air advection. This paper studies the impacts of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on wintertime extreme precipitation in China from 1961 to 2017, and possibly different influences of two El Niño types are also examined. We find that ENSO poses profound influences on extreme precipitation in many portions of China. El Niño (La Niña) intensifies (weakens) the winter precipitation extremes in southeastern China (SEC) and slightly weakens (intensifies) those in central-north China, mainly by changing the frequency rather than the intensity of extreme precipitation. Further analysis suggests that the East Asian winter monsoon tends to be weaker during El Niño winters, suppressing the southward invasion of cold dry air. Via the weakened Walker circulation, El Niño also triggers anomalously descending motion and anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WNP), which exhibits southwesterly anomalies over SEC and is thus conducive to the transport of sufficient moisture into that area. The changes over WNP are also accompanied by ascending motions over East Asia via a local meridional circulation alike the Pacific–Japan pattern. Meanwhile, El Niño induces a southward-displaced East Asian jet stream, as characterized by intensified westerly over southern China, corresponding to anomalously ascending motion there. Together, these changes facilitate the updrafts of circulations and the condensation of water vapor, thus increasing the occurrence of extreme precipitation events in SEC. Moreover, we find that different Niño types exhibit distinct subregional influences. In particular, the canonical eastern Pacific El Niño significantly increases the frequency of extreme precipitation in South China, whereas the Modoki central Pacific El Niño mainly impacts that in East China. Seasonal prediction of extreme precipitation has long been a challenge especially for the East Asian Summer Monsoon region, where extreme rains are often disastrous for the human society and economy. This paper introduces a decision‐tree (DT) method for predicting extreme precipitation in the rainy season over South China in April–June (SC‐AMJ) and the North China Plain in July–August (NCP‐JA). A number of preceding climate indices are adopted as predictors. In both cases, the DT models involving ENSO and NAO indices exhibit the best performance with significant skills among those with other combinations of predictors and are superior to their linear counterpart, the binary logistic regression model. The physical mechanisms for the DT results are demonstrated by composite analyses of the same DT path samples. For SC‐AMJ, an extreme season can be determined mainly via two paths: the first follows a persistent negative NAO phase in February–March; the second goes with decaying El Niño. For NCP‐JA, an extreme season can also be traced via two paths: the first is featured by "non El Niño" and an extremely negative NAO phase in the preceding winter; the second follows a shift from El Niño in the preceding winter to La Niña in the early summer. Most of the mechanisms underlying the decision rules have been documented in previous studies, while some need further studies. The present results suggest that the decision‐tree approach takes advantage of discovering and incorporating various nonlinear relationships in the climate system, hence is of great potential for improving the prediction of seasonal extreme precipitation for given regions with increasing sample observations. Based on observation data from 1958 to 2020, the current study explores the interdecadal modulation effects on moderate El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) episodes and East Asian (EA) winter surface air temperature (SAT) through the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Strong and moderate ENSO episodes are classified by their amplitudes. The current work investigates the influence of moderate ENSO episodes on the EA winter SAT, especially moderate La Niña episodes, which show a close relationship with the EA winter SAT. To explore the PDO modulation effect on the influence of ENSO episodes, these ENSO episodes are further divided into two categories in terms of warm or cold PDO phases. The composite results show that in the warm phase of the PDO, the moderate La Niña signal is relatively strong and stable, with a profound impact on the EA winter SAT variability, whereas in the cold PDO phase, the relationship between the EA winter SAT and moderate La Niña episodes becomes ambiguous. Further studies show that the PDO modulates the moderate La Niña impacts on EA winter SAT primarily through varying the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). While moderate La Niña episodes take place in a warm PDO phase, positive and negative anomalies of sea level pressure (SLP) are observed in the Eurasian continent and mid–high-latitude North Pacific, respectively, favoring anomalous northerlies along the eastern coast of East Asia and therefore a colder-than-normal EA winter. In contrast, in a moderate La Niña winter during the cold PDO phase, the mid–high-latitude North Pacific is controlled by an anomalous high-pressure system with southerly anomalies along its western flank, and therefore, a weak warm pattern is observed for the EA winter SAT. In 2021, the Yangtze–Huaihe River Basin (YHRB) of China underwent normal precipitation during the classical Meiyu period in June–July but suffered extreme precipitation and severe floods in August. The present study revealed that the extreme heavy precipitation anomalies over the YHRB region were closely related to the combined effect of the strong western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (WNPAC) and East Asian middle–high latitude circulation anomalies in August 2021. Moreover, the background of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies was a strong eastern-Pacific La Niña event that rapidly decayed in spring and a second La Niña emerged in late summer, accompanied by a weak tropical Indian Ocean warming and a strong tropical Atlantic warming in summer. The rapidly decaying La Niña event and the weak tropical Indian Ocean warming alone seem to be insufficient to induce the strong WNPAC in August 2021. Observational evidence and numerical experiments suggest that the rapid tropical Atlantic warming from late spring to summer observably contributed to the enhancement and westward shift of the WNPAC, and the cold SST anomalies in the eastern tropical Pacific associated with the second La Niña event also provided favorable conditions for a strong WNPAC in August 2021. Overall, rapid tropical Atlantic warming and the development of the second La Niña contributed to the strong WNPAC in August 2021, while the maintenance mechanism of the East Asian middle–high latitude circulation anomalies that controlled cold air activity remains unclear. This study investigates the impact of boreal winter–peaked La Niña on the following-summer precipitation in East Asia through intermediate sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies playing the role of relay in observation and numerical models. There are widespread dry conditions in both North and South China and wet conditions in coastal areas of central and eastern China. Such a pattern is mainly attributed to an anomalous low pressure over the western tropical Pacific and an anomalous anticyclone over northeast Asia. It is found that the delayed impact of La Niña on the East Asian climate is operated through intermediate SST anomalies—the Z-shape cold SST anomalies in the tropical North Pacific. There might be three ways for the SST anomalies to operate. First, they produce tropical atmospheric perturbations that can penetrate into the subtropical jet through the westerly trough over the northeast subtropical Pacific, the wave train being then excited along the jet. Second, perturbations created through the monsoon trough over the western Pacific can directly stimulate northward-propagating Rossby waves along the East Asian coast, mainly at low level. And third, perturbations over the tropical Atlantic–northwest Africa can also trigger downstream propagating waves along the subtropical jet. The observation effects of the intermediate SST anomalies and their possible impact mechanisms on atmospheric circulation are largely reproduced within numerical simulations performed with the Community Earth System Model. In the background of long‐term global warming, the northern hemisphere experienced an extremely hot summer in 2022 with the hottest on record for Europe and China, and the second‐hottest for North America and Asia. The hot summer concurred with a triple‐dip La Niña in the tropical Pacific. Given the extremity of the hot summer in East Asia in 2022, in this work, we examine the associated atmospheric circulation and assess the real‐time predictions from the North American Multimodel Ensemble (NMME). Also, we identify the contributions of long‐term warming trends, sea surface temperature (SST) forcing, and an atmospheric feedback to the hot summer. The hot summer in East Asia in 2022 is due to the extremely strong and westward expanded western Pacific subtropical high. That leads to cloud cover reduction and increases in net downward shortwave radiation at the surface, and further strengthens the positive surface air temperature (SAT) anomalies. In contrast, the seasonal‐interannual variation of SST has a minor impact. Thus, the hot summer is mainly associated with the long‐term trend and amplified by the positive feedback among the SAT, cloud cover, and net downward shortwave radiation. NMME with the initial conditions in May 2022 predicts positive SAT anomalies in most regions of East Asia, but does not capture the observed spatial distribution pattern and amplitudes. The failure implies the challenge of state‐of‐the‐art climate models in predicting such extreme events. For the averages in the main hot summer region in East Asia in 2022, the largest contribution is from the long‐term trend (∼50%), and for the rest 50%, half of them is from the feedback among atmospheric circulation‐surface air temperature‐cloud cover‐net downward shortwave radiation. In contrast, the seasonal‐interannual components of the global sea surface temperatures play a secondary role. Multi‐model ensemble with the initial conditions in May 2022 predicts positive surface air temperature anomalies in most regions of East Asia, especially in August. However, compared with the observations, both the spatial distribution pattern of surface air temperature anomalies and their amplitudes have distinguished biases in the North American Multimodel Ensemble predictions. The Pacific‐Japan (PJ) pattern is the dominant teleconnection over East Asia, closely related to the summer precipitation on various time scales. However, studies on the connection between the interdecadal variations of the PJ pattern and sea surface temperature (SST) forcing are still limited. This study indicates that the relationship between the PJ pattern and ENSO presents a pronounced interdecadal change around 1997/1998. The PJ pattern shows a baroclinic structure over the northwest Pacific and a barotropic structure near Japan during 1979–1997, while its baroclinic structure in the tropics weakens remarkably during 1998–2021, with a southward shift of its midlatitude barotropic structure. As a result, the connection between the PJ pattern and summer precipitation over East Asia exhibits an interdecadal transition in the late 1990s. In the slow La Niña decaying summer of 1979–1997, the cold SST anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) excite an eastward‐propagating Kelvin wave that enhances convection over the northwest Pacific, resulting in the formation of the PJ pattern. In contrast, the cold SST anomalies in the Maritime Continent rather than the TIO yield a zonally confined Kelvin wave in the rapid La Niña decaying summer of 1998–2021. The elongated Kelvin wave penetrating the central Pacific weakens convective anomalies over the northwest Pacific, thereby weakening the baroclinic structure of the PJ pattern in the tropics. Meanwhile, the warm SST anomalies in the Kuroshio Extension (KE) induce a northward shift of the East Asian subtropical westerly jet, with the anomalous anticyclonic circulation over the KE significantly affecting summer precipitation along the Meiyu belt. Based on monthly rainfall station data from the National Climate Prediction Center of China Meteorological Administration, reanalysis monthly data from NCEP/NCAR including the monthly mean and long-term mean values for geopotential height, winds of multi-levels, NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) monthly Sea Surface Temperature (ERSSTV5), the causes of anomalous excessive precipitation in 2021/2022 winter over South China (SC) are investigated by Liang-Kleeman information flow, composite and wave flux methods. The results show that the winter precipitation over SC in 2021/2022 DJF is far more than normal, and the associated circulation patterns are obviously different from those induced by traditional La Niña, especially in the Atlantic and East Asia areas south to Lake Baikal. In 2021/2022 DJF, the Tibet Plateau (TP) exists anomalous cyclone with strong ascending motion, which directly affects the circulation patterns in Eastern China and thus the precipitation in SC. It is a significant causal relationship for the earlier season velocity potential at 850 hPa (related to the anomalous SST) over the tropical Atlantic to later DJF anomalous vertical motions over TP. Especially when the anomalies in tropical Atlantic leads one month before, the relationship is closest. The anomalies of the tropical Atlantic can stimulate the Rossby wave train which propagates downstream, corresponding to the abnormal cyclonic circulation over TP. In the early autumn to winter of 2021/2022, the 850 hPa potential velocity anomalies in the tropical Atlantic were significant with positive phase. The Rossby wave train excited by the potential velocity anomalies and then propagated along the great circle path and global jet stream (GJT) over South Asia (SA), formed an anomalous cyclonic with ascending motion over TP and lead more precipitation over SC in winter of 2021/2022. Winter rainfall, usually accompanying with lower temperature, will bring severely bad influence on traffic, power supply, communication, agriculture and people's lives. The results of this paper can provide a reference for further understanding the causes and mechanism of DJF rainfall over SC. • The winter precipitation over SC in 2021/2022 DJF is extremely more than normal, and the associated circulation patterns are obviously different from those induced by La Niña, especially in the Atlantic and East Asia areas south to Lake Baikal. • Strong ascending motion over TP(Tibet Plateau) affects the circulation patterns directly in eastern China and lead to the excessive precipitation in SC during 2021/2022 DJF. • The anomalies over the tropical Atlantic can stimulate the Rossby wave train and propagate downstream, and the Rossby wave trains allow energy to propagate to TP area with wave flux convergent, contributing certainly to the anomaly cyclone circulation there. This study aims to better understand the ENSO impacts on climate anomalies over East Asia in early winter (November–December) and late winter (January–February). In particular, the possible mechanisms during early winter are investigated. The results show that ENSO is associated with a Rossby wave train emanating from the tropical Indian Ocean toward East Asia (denoted as tIO-EA) in early winter. This tIO-EA wave train in El Niño (La Niña) is closely related to a weakening (strengthening) of the East Asian trough, and thereby a weakened (strengthened) East Asian winter monsoon and warm (cold) temperature anomalies over northeastern China and Japan. By using partial regression analysis and numerical experiments, we identify that the formation of tIO-EA wave train is closely related to precipitation anomalies in the tropical eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific (denoted as eIO/wP). In addition, the ENSO-induced North Atlantic anomalies may also contribute to formation of the tIO-EA wave train in conjunction with the eIO/wP precipitation. The response of eIO/wP precipitation to ENSO is stronger in early winter than in late winter. This can be attributed to the stronger anomalous Walker circulation over the Indian Ocean, which in turn is caused by higher climatological SST and stronger mean precipitation state in the Indian Ocean during early winter. The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is one of the leading modes of tropical intra-seasonal variability, which exerts significant impacts on the weather and climate across the globe, particularly in the tropics. MJO affects the Asian monsoon by producing enhanced and suppressed convection during the active and break periods, respectively. In the recent decades, the heat content of Indo-western Pacific Ocean has increased significantly, which strengthened the MJO activity. Previous studies also have shown that the expansion of Indo-western Pacific warm pool led to the warping of MJO life cycle, which decreases its residence time over the Indian Ocean (IO) and increases over the Pacific Ocean. Here we show that in the boreal summer months, MJO amplitude has strengthened during the global warming hiatus or rapid IO warming period (1999–2015) compared to the previous period (1982–1998). In the later period, MJO exhibits a faster regeneration over the western IO, and its residence time has increased in the western hemisphere and western IO but decreased in the eastern IO and eastern Pacific Ocean. The strengthening of MJO and the readjustment in its residence time are due to the local MJO feedback on the IO and the La Nina like sea surface temperature pattern in the Pacific Ocean. The prolonged MJO activity leads to bursts of rainfall over the Indian subcontinent in Phase 3 and Phase 4, influencing the active spells of the Indian summer monsoon and causing heavy rainfall over central India and East Asia. The monsoon development in the early rainy season in East Asia is analysed by the evolution of daily weather types (WTs). The WTs are classified by a k‐means clustering analysis based on 850 hPa winds from April 1 to July 31 in the 40‐year period of 1979–2018. Five WTs are identified, typifying the progression of weather regimes in the monsoonal evolution. WTs 1 and 2, with easterly winds in the South China Sea (SCS), occurs mostly in April and early May, corresponding to typical WTs before the SCS monsoon onset. In WT3, winds in the SCS turns westerly, and a rain band emerges in South China, extending east‐northeastward to the Pacific Ocean south of Japan, which signifies the May–June Mei‐yu in South China. Then, with the rain band moved to Yangtze River Valley (YRV) in WT4, this WT corresponds to the June–July Mei‐Yu in central and eastern China along the YRV. Finally, WT5 occurs more frequently towards the end of July, and corresponds to the post‐Mei‐Yu WT, indicating the ending of the early summer rainfall season in East Asia. The evolution of the WTs is gradual but intermittent, representing the weather‐within‐climate information. Each WT likely persists to itself. But WT1 and WT2 also progress to each other. The long persistence of WT3 and WT4 up to several weeks indicates the quasi‐stationary Mei‐Yu in South China and the YRV, respectively. The year‐to‐year variability of the WTs is also evident in the WTs. The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impact on the precipitation in the East Asian region is analysed for three types of ENSO: Eastern Pacific, Central Pacific, and mixed El Niño and La Niña. An anomalous strengthening in western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) increases moisture transport from the tropics to East Asia, inducing anomalous boreal summer monsoonal rainfall, causing extreme weather events in the densely populated region. Such positive WPSH anomalies can be induced by central Pacific (CP) cold sea-surface temperature (SST) anomalies of an incipient La Niña and warm anomalies in the Indian and/or the tropical Atlantic Ocean, both promoting anticyclonic anomalies over the northwestern Pacific region. How variability of the WPSH, its extremity, and the associated mechanisms might respond to greenhouse warming remains elusive. Using outputs from 32 of the latest climate models, here we show an increase in WPSH variability translating into a 73% increase in frequency of strong WPSH events under a business-as-usual emission scenario, supported by a strong intermodel consensus. Under greenhouse warming, response of tropical atmosphere convection to CP SST anomalies increases, as does the response of the northwestern Pacific anticyclonic circulation. Thus, climate extremes such as floods in the Yangtze River Valley of East China associated with WPSH variability are likely to be more frequent and more severe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occurrence of cold events over East Asia is modulated by the background mean state associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The present study compares the processes of occurrence of cold events over East Asia between El Niño and La Niña winters. It is found that the difference in atmospheric mean state in El Niño and La Niña winters leads to different processes of occurrence of cold events over East Asia during boreal winter. The cold events during El Niño winters are closely related to negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) and those during La Niña winters are contributed by the Ural blocking. Both negative AO in El Niño winters and the Ural blocking in La Niña winters are followed by a Rossby wave train over Eurasia that strengthens the Siberian high and the East Asian trough, leading to cold anomalies over East Asia. The negative AO during El Niño winters is related to a tropospheric teleconnection that weakens the polar vortex, which is confirmed by numerical experiment with a linear baroclinic model. The Ural blocking is associated with the Arctic sea ice loss in the Barents Sea during La Niña winters through the reduced meridional temperature gradient and decreased zonal mean winds. The Arctic sea ice loss over the Barents Sea during La Niña winters is contributed by the development of anticyclonic anomalies induced by the enhanced stationary waves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effects of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the interannual variability in spring aerosols over East Asia are investigated using the Modern Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis aerosol data. Results show that the ENSO has a crucial effect on the spring aerosols over mainland South East Asia, southern China, and the ocean south of Japan. The above-normal (below-normal) aerosols are found over these regions during the ensuing spring of El Niño (La Niña). In contrast to the local aerosol diffusion in winter, the ENSO affects East Asian aerosols in the following spring mainly via the modulation of upstream aerosol generation and transport processes. The underlying physical mechanism is that during the ensuing spring of El Niño (La Niña), the dry (wet) air and reduced (enhanced) precipitation are beneficial for the increase (reduction) in biomass burning activities over northern mainland South East Asia, resulting in more (fewer) carbonaceous aerosol emissions. On the other hand, the anomalous anticyclone (cyclone) over the north-western Pacific (WNP) associated with El Niño (La Niña) enhances (weakens) the low-level south-westerly wind from northern mainland South East Asia to southern Japan, which transports more (less) carbonaceous aerosol downstream. Anomalous precipitation plays a role in reducing aerosols over the source region, but its washout effect over the downstream region is limited. Present study investigates the dominant modes of interannual variability in precipitation over the Hengduan Mountains (HM) during rainy seasons. The leading two empirical orthogonal function (EOF) modes of HM precipitation explain 28.4 and 13.9% of the total variance, respectively. Positive EOF1 phase features enhanced precipitation anomalies over the southern HM, and a dipole structure with wet anomalies occupying large areas from the YunGui plateau to Tibetan Plateau is observed in positive EOF2 phase. Analysis of moisture budget and omega equation indicate the importance of leading EOF modes related circulation anomalies, which bring the horizontal warm advection to the HM, favouring the anomalous upward motions and precipitation increase there. For EOF1, the HM is controlled by an anomalous quasi‐barotropic cyclone. This cyclone is one part of a zonally oriented barotropic wave‐like pattern highly resembling the Silk Road pattern. Besides, the SST anomalies over the Indo‐Pacific sector are similar to the decaying phase of La Niña, which induces the wet anomalies and further triggers the anomalous lower‐level cyclone as a Rossby wave response. For EOF2, an anomalous cyclone appears over the Northeast Asia from lower to upper levels, and southerly wind anomalies prevail over the HM. The North Atlantic Oscillation and its coupled tripole SST pattern trigger a zonal wave‐like pattern at middle and high latitudes emanating from the Central Europe, across Mongolia to Northeast Asia. Moreover, the SST anomalies over the Indo‐Pacific sector resemble the developing phase of El Niño, which induces the meridional Pacific‐Japan/East Asia‐Pacific teleconnection from tropical NWP to Northeast Asia. For proactive prevention of water shortage problems, it is important to understand the spatiotemporal variabilities of droughts and their development mechanisms. This study identified an interannual variation of spring drought-prone condition in each region of East Asia (EA)—northern, mid, and southern EA—for the period 1979–2015 by using the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and a hierarchical clustering analysis. According to our analyses, spring drought-prone condition in the northern EA region mainly depends on local surface heating and precipitation deficit due to adiabatic compression by a high-pressure anomaly over the region during the preceding winter to spring. The high-pressure anomaly was driven by an upper-level wave train propagating from the Europe related to a positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation. For drought-prone conditions in the mid and the southern EA regions, the local precipitation deficit caused by the negative moisture advection/convergence therein acts as a primary factor. During the preceding winter, the negative moisture advection/convergence anomalies both in mid and southern EA regions were induced by anomalous low-level cyclonic circulations over the western North Pacific related to the La Niña. In spring, however, the moisture condition in the southern EA region was affected by persistent La Niña while that in the mid-EA region was by the negative phase of North Pacific Oscillation. This gap makes the main location of the negative moisture advection/convergence anomalies just slightly different, but considerably alter the region exposed to the drought-prone condition. The eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is an important impact factor for the East Asian trough (EAT) variability during boreal winter. However, not all ENSO events can result in anomalous EAT events, which indicates that there could be some other factors modulating the relationship between ENSO and the EAT. The analysis of atmospheric circulations indicates that the intensity of the Asian Polar vortex (PV) plays an important role in the El Niño‐EAT connection. The strengthened Asian PV favours the wave‐train triggered by El Niño events propagates eastward from the North Pacific to East Asia and finally weakens the EAT. In contrast, during El Niño years with the weakened Asian PV, El Niño's influences are confined over western Siberia and the wave activity flux over Eurasia is weak, which consequently leads to a weak response of the EAT. For the La Niña‐EAT connection, the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) is a potential modulating factor. The La Niña and negative‐phase NPO have a strengthened effect on the EAT, resulting in a strong response of the EAT to La Niña events. In contrast, the effects of La Niña and positive‐phase NPO on the EAT are offset, leading to a weak response of the EAT to La Niña events. The above results are further confirmed by a numerical simulation of the pre‐industrial Control experiment. The zonal shift in the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) is closely associated with moisture transport in East Asia and is thus an important factor that determines the amount of summer precipitation in the region. Climatologically, the WNPSH retreats eastward from early to late summer. However, there is high variability in the early to late summer shift in the WNPSH from year to year. Thus, the interannual variability in the intraseasonal zonal displacement of WNPSH from early to late summer was examined in this study. The results showed that the intraseasonal shift in the WNPSH from early to late summer was almost unrelated to the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal, although previous studies have claimed that ENSO can modulate the variation in the summer mean WNPSH. More specifically, the El Niño or La Niña years were not predictive of how the WNPSH would shift zonally from early to late summer. Otherwise, the zonal displacements of the WNPSH were more of mid‐latitude origin. In the strongly retreating years (SRY), the mid‐latitude wave train was much more significant than that in the weakly retreating years (WRY). The mid‐latitude wave train was reminiscent of the Silk Road teleconnection pattern (SRP). In the SRY, the centres of the wave trains had opposite signs in early and late summer, which resulted in the opposite features of the WNPSH between early and late summer. This study analyzed summertime wave patterns in the western North Pacific by separating them into those during El Niño (EN) and La Niña (LN) years for 1979–2015. The background flow revealed that in the EN years, the subtropical high was weaker and the East Asian summer monsoon trough was deeper and extended farther southeastward. The composite results indicated that in the EN years, tropical cyclone (TC) tracks were more solid and stably associated with wave pattern propagation routes because the circulation anomalies were significantly stronger. However, in the LN years, when the wave patterns were weak under the shorter and less organized monsoon trough due to the enhanced subtropical high, the TC tracks and cyclonic anomalies were irregular and sporadic. Further background flow analyses indicated that the EN circulation favored the development of the monsoon trough and east–west expansion and contraction of the subtropical ridge, whereas the stronger subtropical ridge dominated most western North Pacific areas in the LN years. Therefore, the monsoon trough was weaker in the LN years and induced recurving TCs to take more scattered routes near Taiwan and China's east coast. Therefore, Taiwan experienced more rainfall during recurving TC periods in the LN years than in the EN years. For the straight-moving TCs passing through Taiwan, rainfall was concentrated over southern Taiwan in the EN years but more evenly distributed in the LN years. The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) shows notable change during the summer after El Niño peak. This "delayed" response, however, is variable and difficult to predict. Here, we revisit this issue by separating El Niño decays into early transition and late transition. In the summer after an early transition, the central-to-eastern Pacific evolves into a La Niña condition, with positive rainfall anomaly occurring over most parts of eastern China. In contrast, in the summer after a late transition, the central-to-eastern Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly remains neutral or slightly above normal; correspondingly, the East Asian rainfall anomaly shows a tripolar structure with positive anomaly over the Yangtze-Huaihe River valley and negative anomalies over northern and southern China. These different rainfall responses are mainly related to different locations of the anomalous anticyclone (AAC) over the western North Pacific (WNP): it is centered at (165°E, 25°N) for late-transition El Niños, but at (135°E, 16°N) for early-transition El Niños. During the late transition, the AAC–SST feedback, identified by the dipole SST mode consisting of WNP cooling and northern Indian Ocean (NIO) warming, mainly works to support the WNP AAC. During the early transition, the AAC–SST feedback is weak and mainly attributed to NIO warming. The strong easterly anomaly over the western equatorial Pacific, which is tied to the central-to-eastern equatorial Pacific cooling and dipole precipitation pattern from western equatorial Pacific to the Maritime Continent, occurs to support the AAC and pulls it equatorward. These distinct responses exist in the last century, and the CMIP5 models can reproduce these distinct responses well except that the models underestimate the AAC–SST feedback for late-transition El Niños. This study provides a water vapor transport (WVT) perspective on the linkages between the South Asian and East Asian summer monsoons (SASM and EASM) and indicates two robustly coupled modes of the vertical integrated WVT (VIWVT) over the two monsoons that accounts for above 90% of the total squared covariance fraction. The first coupled mode [singular value decomposition mode 1 (SVD1 mode)] depicts a meridional linkage between the meridional dipole VIWVT anomalies over both the SASM and EASM, while the second coupled mode (SVD2 mode) illustrates a zonal connection of an anomalous cyclonic/anticyclonic VIWVT over the SASM and a zonal wavelike VIWVT over the EASM. The SVD1 mode is linked through the anomalous subtropical high over the western North Pacific (WNPSH) and is primarily associated with the transition phase of El Niño/La Niña (ENSO) and simultaneous Indian Ocean basin mode (IOBM) SST warming/cooling. The meridional connection of the VIWVT in the SVD1 mode experienced a clear intensification since the late 1970s that may be attributed to the strengthened impacts of the ENSO/IOBM on the EASM and SASM after the late 1970s. The SVD2 mode is connected by the circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) pattern and related to the developing phase of ENSO and summer North Atlantic tripole (NAT) SST anomalies. The zonal VIWVT connection in SVD2 mode is strongly modulated by the SASM–CGT connections and reveals significant weakening since the late 1970s but reintensifies after the early 1990s. This may be associated with the weakened ENSO–SASM relationship after the late 1970s and interdecadal decreasing of the all Indian summer rainfall since the early 1990s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The northern and the southern modes are two distinct principle modes that dominate the winter mean surface air temperature (Ts) variations over East Asia (EA). The cold southern mode is represented by a significant cooling south of 45°N and is linked to La Niña events. An objective criterion, which could distinguish the spatial distributions and the maximum center of sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA), is used to classify the La Niña events into two categories: mega-La Niña and equatorial La Niña. Their impacts are inspected onto the Ts southern mode. The mega-La Niña, featured by a significant K-shape warming in the western Pacific with the maximum SSTA cooling centered in the tropical central Pacific. As a response, an anomalous barotropic high is generated over North Pacific (NP) implying a weak zonal gradient between ocean and the EA continent, which induces a neutral Ts southern mode. The equatorial La Niña characterizes a significant cooling in the tropical eastern Pacific with convective descending motions shifting eastward to the east of the dateline. The resultant low-level circulation anomalies show an anomalous subtropical NP low and a gigantic abnormal EA continent high. The strong zonal gradient results in significant northerly anomalies over EA from 55°N to southeastern China. Over the mid-upper troposphere, the anomalous subtropical NP low extends westward to the Korean Peninsula, leading to a strengthened and southward shifted EA trough. Such abnormal circulation patterns favor the intrusion of cold air to southern EA and correspond to a strong Ts southern mode.
