Quantifying the relative influences of anthropogenic activities and climate change on soil erosion and deposition during the Holocene, when both forces have been interacting is a complex problem. Analysis of long-term patterns in soil erosion and lake deposition in a basin can provide the basis for untangling the complexities of climate and anthropogenic forcings. In this paper, sedimentary sequences from Xingyun Lake are compared with simulated soil erosion rates in the basin to explore the relationship between river basin soil erosion and lake deposition during the Holocene in Yunnan, China. Modern soil erosion rates are calculated using RUSLE, while Holocene soil erosion rates are estimated using modern rates with reconstructed precipitation and vegetation cover sequences. Through this investigation, we found the following results. First, Holocene vegetation in the lake basin was mainly affected by climate change, and the vegetation experienced the same pattern of changes as the climate. Soil erosion and lake deposition rates, along with changes to vegetation cover, were synchronous with precipitation trends during the Holocene. Second, soil erosion and lake deposition have been exacerbated by human activities, such as deforestation and land reclamation in the Xingyun Lake basin. Finally, this study provides new insights into the effects by anthropogenic impacts and climate forcing on the processes of soil erosion and lake deposition on the millennium scale. Southwest China is the largest continuous karst area in the world, which has suffered from serious ecological degradation. Many researchers have discussed the fragility of karst ecosystem and environment (KEE). However, these studies focused mainly on the particular karst geologic setting and short-term (annual) eco-environmental changes. At longer timescales, knowledge of how KEE responds to external disturbances such as climate changes and human activities is very limited. Based on geochemical analysis of lake sediments in the karst region of Southwest China (KRSC), this paper probes into the evolutionary characteristics of KEE at decadal-centurial timescales. Organic C/N ratios, Sr/Rb ratios and pollen assemblage in Baixian Lake indicate that striking eco-environmental deterioration occurred as a result of the drought event between 3.6 ka B.P. and 2.2 ka B.P. The regional vegetation degraded with dwindling herbs, increasing ferns and decreasing terrestrial productivity. Furthermore, the karst ecosystem had not restored to the earlier level even after a long time. Once degradation happens, the karst ecosystem would be unlikely to recover in the short term. Poor water-soil conservation capacity and weak drought resistance of karst soil should be the inherent mechanism of the fragility of terrestrial KEE. Hongfeng Lake has suffered from rapid eutrophication in the last three decades. Reservoirs respond more sensitively to agricultural N and P addition because of abundant dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) supply from the carbonate catchment in karst region than in non-karst region. A positive feedback loop may develop among elevated primary productivity, higher deposition fluxes of organic matter, anoxia in hypolimnion and enhanced internal P release in aquatic ecosystem. This positive feedback, together with the DIC fertilization effect and sensitivity to agricultural N and P addition, may explain the fragility of aquatic KEE. This paper for the first time presents a long-term evidence for the fragility of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem in the KRSC, and provides new insights into the sensitivity and resilience of KEE to climate change and agricultural activities, highlighting the extreme importance of eco-environment protection in karst region. The use of high‐resolution and highly precise age models is essential for quantitative environmental reconstructions. To assess the reliability of pollen as a chronometer in laminated lake sediments, pollen traps and lake cores, statistical methods were used to study seasonal pollen signals. The results showed that (a) the pollen assemblages from air traps and lake/reservoir surface sediment traps in the north‐western Loess Plateau of China displayed distinct seasonal patterns, which were confirmed by nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS); and (b) The pollen assemblages of the dark and light layers in the Zhenhu Lake cores allowed detection of the seasonality of sediment deposition based on the results of the pollen traps. The NMDS method also showed statistically significant differences between the pollen assemblages of the dark and light layers. Furthermore, instrumental monitoring data and characteristic time markers of historical events (1958 and 2011) were used to cross‐check the chronologies obtained by the pollen assemblages, and the results strengthened the credibility and reliability of pollen as a chronometer. Radionuclide dating techniques characterized by Cs and Pb have recently been applied in the study of lake sediments around the world. In this study, a chronological series of sediment cores was established based on Cs and Pb analyses along with the evaluation of sediment properties, such as particle size distribution, total organic carbon (TOC), carbonate content, and acid-insoluble residue, to study sediment accumulation rates, sediment sources, and responses to human activities in the Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve in southwestern China. In terms of the particle size distribution of sediments, silt content was the highest, and clay and sand contents were relatively low. The sediments displayed high TOC contents because of the significant amounts of vegetation grown in the lakes. The carbonate content was also high due to the overall geological background of carbonates in Jiuzhaigou. Carbonate content tended to decline from top to bottom in the sediment cores, whereas the acid-insoluble residue tended to increase. These results suggested that the depth variation of the environmental parameters of the sediments in two lakes in Jiuzhaigou would correspond to each other. The results indicated that the sediment rate of Jiuzhaigou was generally high with strong siltation, indicating that serious soil loss was induced by intensive human activities in the basin over the past decades. The increases in the mass accumulation rate, contents of acid-insoluble residue, and mean particle size during the periods of 1840-1900s, late 1930s-early 1950s, 1966-1978, and 2003-2006 revealed the occurrence of severe soil and water loss as a result of extensive agricultural expansion, large-scale deforestation, and road construction in Jiuzhaigou. The deposition rate and the properties of lacustrine sediments could reflect the significant impact of human activities on lake sedimentation during Jiuzhaigou's history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We used a 55-cm sediment core from shallow Chaiwopu Lake in the central Tianshan Mountains of Xinjiang, northwest China, to investigate climate and environmental changes in this arid region over the past ~150 years. The core was dated using Cs. We compared temporal changes in several sediment variables with recent meteorological and tree-ring records. Organic matter had a positive correlation with the Palmer Drought Severity Index in the central Tianshan Mountains, and the δC of organic matter had a positive correlation with regional temperature. We applied constrained incremental sum-of-squares cluster analysis to element concentrations in the core and identified three distinct zones: (1) 55-46 cm, ~1860-1910, (2) 46-26 cm, ~1910-1952, and (3) 26-0 cm, 1952-present. Between 1880 and 1910 AD, following the Little Ice Age (LIA), the sediment environment was relatively stable, climate was cold and dry, and the lake water displayed high salinity, in contrast to conditions during the LIA. During the LIA, westerlies carried more water vapor into Central Asia when the North Atlantic Oscillation was in a negative phase, and encountered the enhanced Siberia High, which probably led to increased precipitation. In the period 1910-1950 AD, the lake was shallow and the regional climate was unstable, with high temperatures and humidity. In the last ~15-20 years, human activities caused an increase in sediment magnetic susceptibility, and heavy metal and total phosphorus concentrations in the sediment were substantially enriched. Mean annual temperature displays a warming trend over the past 50 years, and the lowest temperature was observed in the 1950s. There has been an increase in annual total precipitation since the 1990s. The combined influences of climate and human activity on the lake environment during this period were faithfully recorded in sediments of Chaiwopu Lake. A typical lake sediment core is obtained from the Chaohu Lake in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Anhui Province, China. The timing scale is constrained by AMS 14C dating method. Climate proxies such as pollen and grain size in the core are analyzed to reconstruct the environment changes at this site approximately between 9870 and 2170 cal. a BR The results indicate that at the research area, the climate in the early-middle Holocene had evolved through 3 stages. From 9870 to 6040 cal. a BP, proxy records show a warm and dry climate with low water levels after the late-glacial period. During this stage, cool and dry events occurred at about 8910 and 6060-6030 cal. a BP. Then, between 6040 and 4860 cal. a BP, the climate was humid and vegetation was more flourishing in the Chaohu Lake Valley. The Holocene Optimum occurred at 5840-5500 cal. a BP in the Chaohu Lake, showing the best condition of water and heat. Elm Decline occurred at the period of 5380-4930 cal. a BP. Since 4860 cal. a BP, the climate was warm and dry through 2170 cal. a BP as shown in both pollen spectrum and grain-size histories. Two obvious dry events occurred in 3760 and 2170 cal. a BP, respectively. At 2170 cal. a BP, the water level of the Chaohu Lake reached the lowest as the lakebed possibly exposed. Environmental changes influenced by human activities were recorded in the sediment cores from Xingyun lake. Based on the 137Cs and 210Pb dating, multi-proxy records, enrichment factor (EF), and geoaccumulation index (Igeo) methods, the history of human-environment interactions in Xingyun lake catchment during the past 140 years was studied. The results showed that the total heavy metal pollution in Xingyun lake followed the decreasing order: the northwestern > the middle > the southwestern > the southern > the north easterly. These distributions were controlled by regional geochemical background values, pollution load, and the lake current driven by prevailing southwesterly winds. The total EF value of heavy metals followed the decreasing order: EF (Zn) > EF (Cr) > EF (Pb) > EF (Cd) > EF (Cu). The total Igeo value of heavy metals also followed the decreasing order: Igeo (Zn) > Igeo (Cr) > Igeo (Pb) > Igeo (Cd) > Igeo (Cu). Consequently, the total pollution level of heavy metals followed the decreasing order: Zn > Cr > Pb > Cd > Cu. Before 1910 AD, the natural erosion caused by climate changes was the key factor for the heavy metals accumulated. After 1910 AD, the heavy metal concentrations were mainly controlled by anthropogenic impacts, the dominant sources were from industrial pollution, agricultural pollution, mining, and organic degradation. Finally, the sedimentary evolution history of Xingyun lake can be divided into four stages, i.e., (1) natural evolution stage during 1862-1910 AD, (2) anthropogenic disturbance stage during 1910-1953 AD, (3) anthropogenic reconstruction stage during 1953-1984 AD, and (4) eutrophication stage after 1984 AD.
