Prior experiments have demonstrated that the pole in a magnetically shielded Hall thruster sputters and erodes visibly, in contrast with that in an unshielded thruster. To determine the reason for this, a particle-in-cell simulation was conducted, and the difference between shielded and unshielded thrusters in terms of plasma behavior near the exit plane was studied. The results show that in the case of the magnetically shielded thruster, the ion flux peak is on the magnetic pole face with higher ion energy, indicating severer erosion at the pole. By contrast, the flux peak of the unshielded thruster is on the head face of the channel wall, indicating severer bombardment at the wall and milder erosion at the pole. Therefore, pole erosion occurs in the magnetically shielded thruster, and channel head face erosion can be observed in the unshielded thruster. It has been recognized that the application of magnetic shielding technology deteriorates the plume divergence efficiency of a Hall thruster. To try to alleviate this effect, three magnetic shielding configurations with different inclination directions of the lines of force in the strong magnetic field region are designed via the introduction of a peripheral coil surrounding the thruster body, and their influence on the performance and plume divergence are experimentally evaluated in this study. The measured results show that the performance and plume distribution vary significantly with the change in the inclination direction of the lines of force. Particularly, different to the unshielded Hall thruster that exhibits the best performance and minimal divergence when the strong magnetic field lines are non-inclined (perpendicular to the thruster axis), the magnetically shielded Hall thruster has the largest thrust and the smallest divergence angle when the strong magnetic field lines are inclined inward. Further theoretical research indicates that this is mainly due to the change in the ion acceleration process under the magnetic shielding discharge. To improve the performance of thrusters by using two permanent ring-shaped magnets to push a magnetic field downward, we propose an annular–cylindrical combined-channel Hall thruster and numerically study its performance. The results indicate that, compared with simple annular channels, the annular–cylindrical combined channel can effectively increase the neutral gas density contained within it and increase the degree of ionization, efficiency, thrust, and specific impulse. Moreover, the sputtering zone of discharge channel is in front of the permanent magnets, i.e., wall erosion occurs upon ion bombardment during discharge. However, ions cannot bombard the permanent magnetic rings, thus guaranteeing a constant magnetic field and long discharge lifetime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 200 W No-Wall-Losses Hall Thruster (NWLHT-200 W) is designed and processed to verify the technology of pushing down magnetic field with two permanent magnetic rings. To create a magnetic field, NWLHT-200 W uses two permanent magnetic rings (inner and outer) in the absence of magnetic screen or magnetic component. The anode is at the internal magnetic separatrix position, and the thruster shell is hollow to enhance the heat dissipation of ceramics. The magnetic field strength at the channel outlet is 90% of the maximum magnetic field. In this study, the experimental results concerning the thrust, discharge current, specific impulse, and efficiency are presented and examined. Our experiments show that 'no erosive discharge' of wall is achieved within the range of 120-460 W; the maximum efficiency of the anode may reach 49%. The thruster designed can work stably for a long time, without any auxiliary heat dissipation equipment (heat pipe or radiator), which significantly prolongs the life of Hall thrusters. The channel wall shape of a magnetically shielded Hall thruster is typically designed to be tangential to the near-wall magnetic field line, which significantly constrains wall design freedom. In this study, the wall chamfer was expanded based upon tangent matching, and the effectiveness of magnetic shielding was determined based on the wall color after the experiments. The experiments indicated that the thruster would maintain the same high performance and no visible erosion at constant power levels and constant anode mass flow rate levels in the expanded chamfer wall, even if the wall was not perfectly tangent to the grazing line. The results provide new insights into the design of the topology of magnetically shielded Hall thrusters. • Good magnetically shielded effect remains when both endpoints of chamfered wall is over-tangent to magnetic field line. • Over tangent of wall downstream endpoint affects the discharge little and so a high level of thruster performance remains. • Over-tangent wall shape is much easier to achieve than the perfect tangent one, thereby expanding wall design freedom.
