The existence of persistence contaminates the results of the Mann-Kendall (MK) trend test. This paper proposes an improved MK test for hydrological data with both positive and negative persistence. To this end, the variance and distribution patterns of S were modified under the scaling hypothesis. Different estimators of the scaling coefficient were compared. According to the results, the generalized normal distribution is the best approximation to fit the exact distribution of S with both positive and negative persistence. The centred detrending moving average was demonstrated to be the best estimator of the scaling coefficient for series with a trend. The improved MK test was proven to be more advantageous than other trend detection methods for the synthetic time series and observed precipitation data obtained from nine hydrometric stations located in China. This paper studied the spatial and temporal variability of the statistical structures of precipitation across Xinjiang, China, by analysing the time series of daily precipitation from 50 weather stations during the period from 1961 to 2008. Three indices precipitation concentration index (CI), precipitation concentration degree (PCD) and precipitation concentration period (PCP) were used to detect precipitation concentrations and the associated spatial patterns. The results show that higher precipitation CI values were mainly observed in Southern Xinjiang, whereas lower precipitation CI values were mostly detected in Northern Xinjiang. The precipitation CI values are noticeably larger in places where both annual total precipitation and number of rainy days are lower. The Mann-Kendall trend test demonstrates that the most parts of Xinjiang are characterized by no significant trends of precipitation CI at the 0.05 significance level. The periodicity characteristic of precipitation CI time series in Xinjiang could be detected by wavelet power spectrum analysis, and significant periods of that in most of Xinjiang were concentrated on 2-5 years band. The results of PCP reveal that rainfall in Xinjiang mostly occurs in summer, and the rainy season arrives earlier in Eastern Xinjiang than Western Xinjiang, whereas the results of PCD indicate that the rainfall in Northern Xinjiang was more dispersed within a year than that in Southern Xinjiang. Streamflow series of five hydrological stations were analyzed with aim to indicate variability of water resources in the Tarim River basin. Besides, impacts of climate changes on water resources were investigated by analyzing daily precipitation and temperature data of 23 meteorological stations covering 1960–2005. Some interesting and important results were obtained: (1) the study region is characterized by increasing temperature, however, only temperature in autumn is in significant increasing trend; (2) precipitation changes present different properties. Generally, increasing precipitation can be detected. However, only the precipitation in the Tienshan mountain area is in significant increasing trend. Annual streamflow of major rivers of the Tarim River basin are not in significant trends, except that of the Akesu River which is in significantly increasing trend. Due to the geomorphologic properties of the Tienshan mountain area, precipitation in this area demonstrates significant increasing trend and which in turn leads to increasing streamflow of the Akesu River. Due to the fact that the sources of streamflow of the rivers in the Tarim River basin are precipitation and melting glacial, both increasing precipitation and accelerating melting ice has the potential to cause increasing streamflow. Summary: Annual runoff and annual suspended sediment loads of hydrological gauging stations along the mainstream of the Yangtze River basin (Pingshan station, Yichang station, Hankou station and Datong station) and main tributaries (Beipei station in Jialingjiang River, Wulong station in Wujiang River and Huangzhuang station in Hanjiang River) were analyzed with the help of Mann–Kendall trend analysis and linear regression analysis. Research results indicate that (1) changing patterns of runoff and sediment loads are different in different parts of the Yangtze River basin. No significant trend is detected for annual runoff at all stations at >95% confidence level. Changes of sediment loads, however, demonstrate different pictures in the Yangtze River basin. The sediment loads are in increasing trend in Pingshan station- the most upstream station on the Yangtze River basin (this increasing trend is significant at >95% confidence level after about 1990), but are in decreasing trend at other stations (including stations in the tributaries studied in this paper). This decreasing trend becomes more obvious from Yichang station to Datong station. (2) Water reservoirs exerted more influences on changes of sediment loads than on runoff, which is the main reason for the decreasing trend of sediment loads found in most stations. (3) Influences of water reservoirs on sediment loads are more obvious in the tributaries than in the mainstream of the Yangtze River basin, while in the mainstream the variation patterns of sediment loads are determined by multiple factors. The Ganjiang River is the largest tributary of Poyang Lake in China, and its hydrological regime variation greatly affects the utilization of regional water resources and the ecological environment of the lake. In this study, a novel trend analysis method, the Moving Average over Shifting Horizon (MASH), was applied to investigate the inter- and intra-annual trends of flow and water level from 1976 to 2016 at the Xiajiang and the Waizhou hydrological stations in the Ganjiang River. The Significant Change Rate Method (SCRM) was proposed to determine the MASH averaging parameters. The trend analysis results show a statistically significant decrease in water level series throughout the year and the relationship of flow and water level have changed greatly at the Waizhou station. The sediment load reduction, large-scale sand mining and water level decrease of Poyang Lake are identified as the main causes for the water level decrease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Determining abrupt changes in runoff and sediment load may not only enhance identification of the principal driving factors for such changes but also help establish effective countermeasures for serious water deficit by managers in the Yellow River basin. We used the Mann-Kendall trend test and linear regression to determine trends and abrupt changes of runoff and sediment load during the period between 1950 and 2005, based on monthly hydrological data. Results show that runoff and sediment load decreased from 1950 to 2005, on annual or monthly time scales. Their changes are divided into three stages: fluctuating stage (1950-1970), slowly decreasing stage (1970-1980) and accelerated decreasing stage (1980-2005). The relationship between runoff and sediment load was most significant, and it can be expressed as a linear regression function. Precipitation was one of the most important climate factors affecting runoff before 1985, and the impact of human activities on runoff decrease grew strongly after 1985. Water balance analysis of the Yellow River basin indicates that natural climate change contributed about 55.3% and human activities about 44.7% to the runoff decrease after 1986. Daily precipitation data for 1957-2009 from 53 stations in the Xinjiang, China, are analyzed, based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) with the aim to investigate spatio-temporal patterns of droughts. The Mann-Kendall trend test is used to detect the trends in the SPI values of monthly drought series, drought severity and drought duration. The frequencies of moderate, severe and extreme droughts are higher in the North Xinjiang, while mild droughts occur more often in the South Xinjiang. A decreasing frequency of droughts in the North Xinjiang is found in winter, but a drying tendency is detected in the western parts of the North Xinjiang during spring, summer and autumn, which may be harmful for agriculture. The South Xinjiang seems to be getting wetter in summer, while the south parts of the South Xinjiang seem to be getting drier in spring. The middle of the East Xinjiang is identified to be in a slightly dry tendency. The drought severity is decreasing and drought duration is getting shorter in the North Xinjiang, while both of them increase in the southern parts of the South Xinjiang.
