This paper is offered as a complementary adjunct to the many treatments of the electronic and photonic properties of cubic III–V and II–VI compounds appearing in the literature. These crystals typically exhibit piezoelectricity, due to the molecular dissymmetry, thereby allowing the inclusion of classical mechanical/acoustic features along with the quantum. We discuss the history of this modality and then illustrate its use by applying it to an electro‐elastic problem that has the estimable virtues of having an exact solution, along with wide practical applicability: determination of the piezocoupling values governing the excitation of thickness vibrations in thin cubic films or plates of arbitrary crystallographic orientation by electric fields directed either along, or lateral to, the thickness. Explicit results are given for orientations along the great‐circle paths connecting the principal directions [100], [110], and [111]. The formalism is then applied to GaAs as an example; it is further demonstrated that various results, such as the orientational variations of piezocoupling factors, are generally applicable to other members of the III–V and II–VI families by scaling. Taylor White (1701–1772) was by profession a barrister and judge, active in public life in London. His life as a jurist and as the long-serving treasurer of the Foundling Hospital is documented in the records of his public appointments and in his own official correspondence. This article reveals the other Taylor White, a Fellow of the Royal Society (1725), and an active participant in the practice of science in the mid eighteenth century. White accumulated a significant collection of specimens and drawings of plants, insects, birds and mammals. Over 900 of the zoological drawings are preserved in the Blacker Wood Natural History Collection at McGill University in Montreal. White's passions for natural history and collecting are revealed tangentially through the very few letters in his hand, the notes he made about his own collection, and infrequent references in the books and letters of his friends and fellow naturalists. This article seeks not only to document the sources of White's collection, but also to extract a narrative of acquisition, transport and exchange of specimens that reveals the informal networks of eighteenth-century naturalists, which included not only scientists but also sailors, merchants and curious lawyers. It also explores the work and motivations of the collector engaged in building a reference collection of animal portraits, painted in their true colours and 'the size of life'. Close study of this collection positions Taylor White within the community of eighteenth-century naturalists and provides a deeply textured exploration of natural history and collecting in the age of Linnaeus. Context The McGill University Faculty of Medicine undertook a pilot, simulation-based multiple mini-interview (MMI) for medical school applicant selection, which ran simultaneously with traditional unstructured interviews (all applicants underwent both processes). This paper examines major stakeholder (applicants and evaluators) opinions towards the MMI compared with traditional interviews, including perceptions about the feasibility and utility of the MMI. Methods A total of 100 candidates applying to McGill University Medical School were enrolled in the pilot comparison of the MMI with the traditional, unstructured interview. Applicants’ opinions were obtained by questionnaire shortly after the process (for all applicants) and approximately 6 months after the interviews (for non-accepted applicants). Evaluators’ perceptions were also surveyed. Questionnaires contained both quantitative items and space for qualitative impressions. Descriptive statistics, repeated measures analysis of variance (manova) and analysis of the topics raised in written comments were conducted. Results Univariate analyses of response scores revealed statistically significant differences, with the MMI rated more highly than the traditional interview on fairness, imposition of stress and effectiveness as a measurement tool. Compared with the traditional interview, applicants also felt the MMI: (i) allowed them to be competitive; (ii) was enjoyable, and (iii) was often a favourite part of their interview experience. It should be noted that applicants were aware that their MMI score would be included in their overall interview rating. Written comments were positive with regard to, for example, fairness, the provision of opportunities to show one’s strengths, and appreciation of the fidelity of the simulations. Evaluators’ responses were in agreement with applicants’ responses, albeit that overall they expressed more caution about the MMI. Conclusions Results suggest the MMI is a promising selection tool from the point of view of both applicants and evaluators. Both groups expressed concerns, but overall the response was favourable for the MMI in comparison with traditional interviews, and the MMI has been adopted by McGill University’s medical school. Since November 1996, the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library at McGill University has established a new Subsidised UnMediated Ordering (SUMO) service for its users: the CISTI Source/SUMO service, a one-stop shopping service where the patrons (faculty, staff and graduate students) can browse the CISTI Source Table of Contents database over the Web, order their articles and have them sent directly to their desktop by CISTI (Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) without having to search McGill’s OPAC. A blocking mechanism is set in place so that currently owned journal subscription articles cannot be ordered. This service has proved to be a better alternative to the traditional acquisition of journals (both paper and online) and the interlibrary loan service. The CISTI Source/SUMO service has provided more pertinent journals, more quickly and more readily than before and in a much cheaper way than with any journal subscriptions. One-dimensional numerical simulations of non-ideal detonations were performed by using inviscid reactive Euler equations. Chemical reactions in the equations were described by two-step consecutive irreversible reactions A → B → C, which include an exothermic step (A → B) followed by an endothermic step (B → C). Non-ideal detonations are achieved when endothermicity exists in the system. The periodic oscillation behavior of peak pressure during the propagation of a one-dimensional detonation wave was studied with the different exothermicity/endothermicity and different degrees of overdrive. The results show that the increase in exothermicity, the reduction in endothermicity, and the enhanced degrees of overdrive can stabilize the propagation of detonation waves. The influence of the exothermic reaction plays a dominant role for the stability of the one-dimensional non-ideal detonations, which is further confirmed by a theoretical analysis. In addition, the stability parameter χ, proposed originally by Radulescu "The propagation and failure mechanism of gaseous detonations: experiments in porous-walled tubes," Ph.D. thesis (McGill University, Montreal, Canada, (2003), was extended to predict the stability of non-ideal detonations, based on the Zel'dovich–Neumann–Döring structure of the non-ideal detonations. Background: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains problematic. Regular monitoring of its barriers is clinically recommended, however, patient-provider communication around adherence is often inadequate. Our team thus decided to develop a new electronically administered patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) of barriers to ART adherence (the I-Score) to systematically capture this data for physician consideration in routine HIV care. To prepare for a controlled definitive trial to test the I-Score intervention, a pilot study was designed. Its primary objectives are to evaluate patient and physician perceptions of the I-Score intervention and its implementation strategy. Methods: This one-arm, 6-month study will adopt a mixed method type 3 implementation-effectiveness hybrid design and be conducted at the Chronic Viral Illness Service of the McGill University Health Centre (Montreal, Canada). Four HIV physicians and 32 of their HIV patients with known or suspected adherence problems will participate. The intervention will involve having patients complete the I-Score through a smartphone application (Opal), before meeting with their physician. Both patients and physicians will have access to the I-Score results, for consideration during the clinic visits at Times 1, 2 (3 months), and 3 (6 months). The implementation strategy will focus on stakeholder involvement, education, and training; promoting the intervention's adaptability; and hiring an Application Manager to facilitate implementation. Implementation, patient, and service outcomes will be collected (Times 1-2-3). The primary outcome is the intervention's acceptability to patients and physicians. Qualitative data obtained, in part, through physician focus groups (Times 2–3) and patient interviews (Times 2–3) will help evaluate the implementation strategy and inform any methodological adaptations. Discussion: This study will help plan a definitive trial to test the efficacy of the I-Score intervention. It will generate needed data on electronic PROM interventions in routine HIV care that will help improve understanding of conditions for their successful implementation. DRAW (Data Rescue: Archives & Weather) is a citizen science project that asks the Canadian public to take part in transcribing millions of meteorological observations recorded between 1871 and 1963 at McGill University's Observatory in Montreal, Quebec, which was demolished in 1963. We examine how classroom-based curricula can integrate citizen science so youth can learn more about their community via engagement with the local history of weather conditions and impacts. Conducted in March 2018, this research examined knowledge translation during a three-week course module through written reflections, classroom video footage, exit interviews, and a final group research assignment. We worked with 21 students-16- to 20-year-olds enrolled in a social science research methods course at Dawson College, a two-year collège d'enseignement général et professionnel (college of general and vocational education) that attracts local students and is a funded part of education in the province of Quebec. We found knowledge translation was facilitated by student engagement with their community's history and appreciation for aiding credible scientific research. Knowledge translation suffered from attempts to include archival records that could be difficult to find, access, and read. Our work showed that citizen science, as a vehicle for community engagement and scientific literacy, requires considerable contextualization, for example, the use of frequently asked questions, tutorials, and blogs for context, and historical context to ensure knowledge translation takes place. To ensure that patients are appropriately prepared for surgical procedures in a welcoming environment, the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital, a McGill University affiliated teaching hospital located in Montreal, is redesigning and relocating its existing presurgical screening clinic so that it provides additional services and is more patient friendly. Given the services being added, limited space, and the desire of senior management to minimize overtime costs, physician idle time, and excessive patient waiting times, we apply simulation optimization to the operations of the redesigned clinic. The simulation optimization is then used to evaluate the effect of possible design decisions to be made by senior management, to ensure that the resulting clinic meets their goals. In contrast to existing research which generally limits clinic optimization to just a few facets, we simultaneously optimize the clinic's multiple objectives at a fine-grained level with respect to individual decision variables for the start time of each physician, the appointment time of each patient, and the start, break, and lunch times of each staff member. To perform the optimization, we apply a simple heuristic to a simulation model of the clinic. We show, with this simple heuristic, that simultaneously optimizing the clinics's multiple objectives by adjusting decision variables at this more granular level can significantly reduce physician idle time, staff overtime, and excessive patient waiting. This in turn makes it possible to evaluate design decisions in context of optimized operations. Numerical investigation of a side thermal buoyant discharge in the cross-flow is presented based on unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations closed with the realizable k- ε turbulence model. Emphasis is placed on the detailed three-dimensional flow evolution and scalar mixing in an incompressible turbulent environment. The present study covers the cases with different jets to cross-flow velocity ratios (R) and initial temperatures. Moreover, various flow characteristics, including vortical structures, jet trajectories, jet streamlines, and intrinsic instabilities, are examined. Mixing ability is quantified by the decay rate of scalar temperatures and velocity magnitude, the probability density function, the spatial mixing deficiencies (SMDs), power spectral density analysis, and temporal mixing deficiencies (TMDs). Comparing the simulation results with the experimental data of Abdelwahed (Surface jets and surface plumes in cross-flows. Ph.D. thesis, Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, 1981), it shows good agreement in terms of the temperature half-width and half-thickness profiles, recirculation zone size, and jet trajectory. The numerical results of three-dimensional structures indicate a shear-layer, horseshoe, and surface roller vortices near the side-channel exit and secondary flows after the recirculation zone at the free surface of the main channel. The instantaneous temperature contours exhibit a vortex shedding phenomenon and gaps between the cross-flow and discharge jet at the shear layer. The maximum velocity magnitude location approaches the outer wall toward the main-channel downstream by increasing R. It is found that as the densimetric Froude number ( Fr 0) and R increase, the temperature dilution (S) generally decreases. The statistical analysis of TMD and SMD indicates a direct relationship between the mixing efficiency and buoyancy flux ( F 0) . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an exploratory questionnaire study at McGill University, we examine the reasons given by top women and men engineering students for deciding whether or not to continue their studies. Women are significantly less likely than men to plan on graduate school; they encounter hurdles such as limited personalized information, difficulties in obtaining reference letters, a low level of encouragement, and the discomfort of the engineering academic environment. This article reports that the Department of Psychiatry of McGill University, Montreal, Quebec has in the past six years initiated a mental health activity called the "Well-Being Clinic." This was an experiment in providing a public health service related to mental rather than physical health. The clinic was originated in 1954. At that time a "well-being" assessment was offered to all those registered for the health and charm course given by the Montreal Young Women Christian Association. This course consists of a series of ten lectures concerned with physical and emotional health, and with social skills in everyday living. The latter include such topics as good grooming, how to entertain, and art and music appreciation. The well-being interviews are given during the course, the appointments being made at the end of the first few lectures. Later, the clinic was included in a similar course offered by McGill University Extension Department. This course, entitled "Understanding Ourselves," consists of a series of lectures on mental health given by staff of the McGill Department of Psychiatry, and is followed in the second term by discussion groups led by psychiatrists and social workers.

Opal (opalmedapps.com), a patient portal in use at the Cedars Cancer Centre of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) (Montreal, Canada), gives cancer patients access to their medical records, collects information on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and has demonstrated patient satisfaction with care. This feasibility study aims to evaluate Opal's potential acceptability in the context of HIV care. People living with HIV (PLWH) and their healthcare providers (HCPs) completed cross-sectional surveys from August 2019 to February 2020 at large HIV centers, including the Chronic Viral Illness Service of the MUHC, and other HIV clinical sites in Montreal and Paris, France. This study comprised 114 PLWH (mean age 48 years old, SD = 12.4), including 74% men, 24% women, and 2% transgender or other; and 31 HCPs (mean age 46.5 years old, SD = 11.4), including 32% men, 65% women, and 3% other. Ownership of smartphones and tablets was high (93% PLWH, 96% HCPs), and participants were willing to use Opal (74% PLWH, 68% HCPs). Participants were interested in most Opal functions and PROMs, particularly PROMs capturing quality of life (89% PLWH, 77% HCPs), experience of healthcare (86% PLWH, 97% HCPs), and HIV self-management (92% PLWH, 97% HCPs). Background: Journal clubs are active at many universities and they involve many specialties and subspecialties. There is a surprising dearth of journal clubs which deal with articles related to the science of medical education. Aims: In an effort to expose medical educators to the outstanding benefits of medical education journal clubs we have devised a set of twelve tips to success for such clubs. Methods: We conducted a survey of journal club directors at the nine Canadian medical schools known to conduct education journal clubs. We also conducted interviews with all members of the McGill University Centre for Medical Education. AN OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN INSTRUMENT SAMPLE libraries used in psychoacoustics, sound analysis, and instrument classification research is presented. One of the central libraries, the McGill University Master Samples (MUMS, Opolko & Wapnick, 2006) is reviewed in detail. This library has over 6000 sound samples representing most classical and popular musical instruments and a wide variety of articulation styles. A closer scrutiny revealed a conspicuous amount of labeling errors, intonation inaccuracies, and the absence of an integrated database. The article reports on the rate of parasitic infection on red colobus monkeys. It mentions that these kinds of monkeys have less parasites as they get larger, contrary to the assumption of researchers on the increase of parasitic infection rate as animals get bigger. In addition, the researchers at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, including Tamaini Snaith, test the feces of the monkeys in Uganda and suggest that the spreading of large groups of monkeys can lower infection rates. Furthermore, according to the McGill University researchers, the reduction of parasites is an accident that results from competition on feeding.
