The subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) is now suggested by many workers to play a role in the formation of orogenic gold deposits in active continental margins, given that the gold and volatiles may be introduced into the SCLM during plate subduction. The giant Cretaceous Jiaodong gold province within the North China block occurs in a convergent margin setting where there is no terrane accretion, thus eliminating from consideration the commonly accepted metal and fluid source reservoir for orogenic gold--the metamorphosed upper crust of an active orogenic belt. Thus, the auriferous fluids were released below the high-grade Archean cratonic rocks from either enriched SCLM or directly from the subducted oceanic slab. Mercury (Hg) isotopes allow fingerprinting of isotopically distinct reservoirs, discriminating between the two possibilities. We present Hg isotope data for a set of pyrite grains, native gold, and lamprophyres from six main gold districts in the Jiaodong gold province. These samples dominantly yielded near-zero Δ199Hg (0‰ ± 0.1‰), within uncertainty of the mantle Δ199Hg value. The results provide novel evidence that the SCLM predominantly controlled the Hg budget of the Jiaodong gold deposits, implying that the SCLM acted as a buffer for the crustal mass-independent fractionation Hg signatures and a storage reservoir for gold and volatiles. Consequently, during slab subduction, gold and volatiles were recycled and stored within the SCLM and were later released from the mantle during uplift and relaxation of compressional tectonics. Arc magmatism can provide crucial information about crustal recycling and growth in subduction zones. However, the crustal material transfer process and mechanism from subducting slab to overlying mantle wedge are controversial. Here, we present detailed petrological, geochronological, geochemical, and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic data, and previously published data for two episodes of subduction-related magmatism in the Northern Yili Block, NW China, to study these issues in relation to the recycling of continental crust and the growth of two separate magmatic episodes at 400-350 Ma and 350-300 Ma, respectively. The Nd-Sr isotope modeling results, low Nd/Sr, and variable Hf/Nd ratios demonstrate that the arc magmatism of these two episodes could be derived from two distinct mélange sources that formed at the slab-mantle interface during subduction of the Junggar oceanic plate. In the first episode, magmatic rocks exhibit high Th/Yb and (La/Sm)N ratios and the decoupling of Nd-Hf isotopes, which leads to an interpretation that the primary magmas were derived from sources mainly mixed by sediments and mantle-wedge peridotites. In contrast, the magmas of the second episode exhibit high Ba/La and Ba/Th ratios and the coupling of Nd-Hf isotopes, which implies that these magmas were likely produced from mélange diapirs dominated by the mixing of midoceanic-ridge basalts and mantle peridotites. The episodes of Nd-Hf isotopic decoupling and coupling coincided with crustal material recycling and crustal growth in subduction zones, respectively. Considering that the Northern Yili Block at 400-350 Ma was characterized mainly by enriched Nd-Hf isotopes of magmatic rocks and no development of the forearc accretionary complex, while the Northern Yili Block at 350-300 Ma featured high εHf(t)-εNd(t) values of magmatic rocks, occurrences of extension-related magmatism, and distribution of the forearc accretionary complex and immature back-arc basin, we propose that these two different mélange sources probably developed in response to subduction transition. That is, one resulted from advancing and the other was relevant to retreating regime. The partial melting of these mélanges in the mantle wedge generated intermediate felsic magmas, which might have acted as a leading mechanism for crustal recycling and growth of the accretionary orogenic belt. The process of slab tearing profoundly affects interchanges of material and energy between the lithosphere and asthenosphere and has been invoked as a trigger of magmatism in modern and ancient subduction‐collision systems. Horizontal slab tears may occur after continental collision and subsequent slab break‐off, whereas vertical slab tears may occur in response to along‐strike variations in rollback velocity, thereby ripping the subducting lithosphere. Previous studies have documented tearing of subducting slabs in modern convergent settings using geophysical methods, but in ancient collisional belts, where these methods cannot be applied, detection of slab tearing is more difficult, particularly if the oceanic plate was fully subducted and the geological evidence for subduction is limited. Here, we employ multiproxy element‐isotope imaging, as well as zircon petrochronology and whole‐rock geochemistry, to assess evidence of vertical tearing of the Mianlue slab in the Triassic Qinling Orogen in central China. Our results show evidence of anomalous, inferred tear‐related magmatism east of 107°E, at 225–210 Ma. Vertical tearing of the northward subducting Mianlue slab is recorded by geochemically anomalous igneous rocks, and the recognition of N–S to NE–SW trending boundaries defined by Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopes, elemental ratios (Nb/Ta, and Ca/Al), Mg#, and reduced crustal thickness between 107° and 108°E. The inferred vertical tear may have been driven by slab rollback of the Mianlue slab at 225–210 Ma. The results show that multiproxy element‐isotope imaging (e.g., of εNd(t), εHf(t), (87Sr/86Sr)i, Nb/Ta, Mg#, and Ca/Al) can be used to reconstruct the evolution of fossil subduction systems. Plain Language Summary: Subduction zones are natural factories for the circulation of material in the Earth as they allow tectonic plates to descend into the mantle. Pieces of subducting plates, normally referred to as slabs, can be torn and segmented, but reconstructing the geometry of such tears in ancient convergent plate boundary settings is difficult. Based on the observation that slab tearing can trigger anomalous magmatism in convergent plate margins, we present a multiproxy geochemical and isotopic imaging method that enables us to understand the process of slab tearing in the Qinling Orogen (China) during the Triassic. We found that igneous rocks from the Qinling Orogen, east of 107°E, are geochemically anomalous (relative to typical arc rocks). These rocks are dated 225–210 Ma. By imaging various geochemical characteristics, our results demonstrate that the subducting Mianlue slab was likely torn at longitude 107°–108°E, thereby producing geochemically and isotopically anomalous mafic and felsic magmatism. The Carboniferous tectonic history of the northern West Junggar of NW China is of key importance for understanding the tectonics of the Altaids. This paper presents a systematic study of the emplacement of the E'min ophiolite, the ages of turbidites, and a stitching granite dike in order to constrain the late Carboniferous oceanic evolution of northern West Junggar. Our field investigation reveals that the Tarbagatay subduction–accretion complex formed by imbrication of turbidites and ophiolitic slices in the Western Tarbagatay Mountain, which is considered as the forearc of the Saur arc in northern West Junggar. Field relationships and zircon geochronology suggest that the emplacement of the E'min ophiolite was later than the minimum time of deposition of hanging wall turbidites, which have a zircon age of 324 Ma, and must be earlier than the crystallization time of a 311‐Ma stitching granite dike that intruded the younger turbidites. The turbidites become younger from north to south, with minimum deposition ages varying from 324 to 309 Ma. The 311‐Ma dike has an adakitic affinity suggesting that it may have formed by magma melted from a subduction slab wedge and from accreted material at ~310 Ma. Therefore, we propose an accretionary arc setting for the Saur arc, with southward migration of the trench and magma front. The 311‐Ma dike has a high Al enrichment and arc‐related geochemical signature suggesting that it was generated by melting of accreted trench sediments. This may indicate that subduction of the Saur arc may have lasted to at least the late Carboniferous. The development of such arc accretion suggests that the formation of the southern Altaids was fundamentally similar to that of accretionary orogens in the western Pacific. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Characterization of the magmatic response to scissor-like oblique continental collision and of the associated geodynamic mechanisms and crustal evolution is crucial to understanding the formation of collisional orogens. This paper presents geochronological, elemental, and isotopic data of three Triassic mafic–felsic intrusions formed during scissor-like continental collision in the Qinling orogenic belt (QOB), China. The biotite pyroxenite, gabbro, quartz monzonite, and syenite of the Jiuzigou (JZG) mafic–felsic intrusive complex were emplaced at 233–231 Ma and have extremely high Ba and Sr contents, fractionated rare-earth elements, insignificant Eu anomalies, and enriched Sr-Nd isotopes. A negative relationship between ε Nd (t) values and SiO 2 content suggests that the JZG complex was formed by assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) processes of enriched-mantle-derived melts. The Pangjiahe (PJH) and Laowangou (LWG) granite porphyries were emplaced at 224 Ma and 215 Ma, respectively, and are characterized by enriched large-ion lithophile elements, depleted high-field-strength elements, and enriched Sr and Nd isotopic compositions (0.70565–0.70648 and − 3.22 to −5.33 respectively), which indicate that these granite porphyries were sourced from mafic lower crust of the South Qinling terrane. The relatively high Mg numbers (45.8–49.4) might indicate mixing of crustal melt and minor mafic magma for the PJH granite porphyries. In contrast, the low Mg numbers (24.8–41.4) and obvious negative Eu anomalies of the LWG granite porphyries suggest an origin by fractional crystallization of crustal melts. The spatial–temporal distribution of the Triassic intrusions emplaced during the continental collision is proposed to have been produced by southeastward slab tearing in the QOB. Slab tearing may be a common geodynamic process during oblique collision generally. In this paper, we present zircon U Pb dating, elemental geochemistry, and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic compositions for Late Carboniferous intrusive rocks in the northern Great Xing'an Range, northeast China. We decipher the mechanisms which triggered lithospheric thinning under microblock-microblock collision and provide a new perspective on the Late Paleozoic evolution of the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Zircon U Pb dating indicates that Jifeng gabbroic diorites and Xinlin granites were formed during a short time interval at 322–321 Ma, whereas the Xinlin gabbros were crystallized at 300 ± 2 Ma. The Jifeng gabbroic diorites exhibit typical arc characteristics, depleted in HFSEs and enriched in Pb and have positive ε Nd (t) (+1.88 to +2.00) and ε Hf (t) (+6.6 to +10.7) values, suggesting they originated from the partial melting of depleted lithospheric mantle modified by slab fluids. The Xinlin gabbros belong to alkaline series and are characterized by the enrichment in HFSEs with positive Nb and Ta anomalies and depleted Nd Hf isotopic compositions (zircon ε Hf (t) = +12.5 to +18.9, whole rock ε Nd (t) = +8.0 to +8.1). High Nb concentrations and low La/Nb (0.81–0.83) and La/Ta (12.50–14.61) ratios of the Xinlin gabbros indicate an origin from a depleted asthenospheric mantle. The Xinlin granites have high-K calc-alkaline compositions, belonging to I-type granites. These granites have positive ε Hf (t) values (+0.2 to +15.1) and juvenile two-stage model ages (1314–506 Ma) with low Sr and high Yb contents, indicating they were formed by the partial melting of a juvenile lower crust under low-pressure conditions. These data, together with the temporal and spatial distribution and the geochemistry characteristics of the Carboniferous igneous rocks in the Great Xing'an Range, suggest that the amalgamation between the Erguna–Xing'an and Songnen blocks occurred before the Late Carboniferous. The occurrence of asthenospheric mantle-derived mafic rocks indicates localized thinning process of lithosphere. The metasomatism of mantle wedge peridotite by slab fluids is a common mechanism to generate mafic arc igneous rocks in oceanic subduction zones, which provides us with an excellent opportunity to study the crust-mantle interaction and temporal compositional evolution of slab fluids during oceanic subduction. Here, we identified three groups of mafic arc igneous rocks with zircon U Pb ages of 489 Ma for Group A, 461 Ma for Group B and 454 Ma for Group C in the Shangdan suture zone of the Qinling orogen, central China. From Group A to C, their SiO 2 , K 2 O, LILE and LREE contents as well as element ratios (e.g., Rb/Nb, Cs/Nb, Ba/Nb, (La/Yb) N and Th/Yb) and Sr-Nd-Hf-O isotopes show a progressively elevated or enriched trend, implying the temporal compositional change of slab fluids fluxing their mantle sources. According to the inverse calculation by program PRIMACALC 2 and mass balance calculation by program ABS5, we acquired the progressively elevated P-T conditions of slab dehydration/melting for Group A to Group C rocks, which are from 3.0 GPa and 735 °C to 4.7 GPa and 799 °C. Modelled results show that the proportion of sediment-derived melt in the slab fluids increased steadily from 5 wt% to 40 wt% as the subduction proceeded. Combining the geochemical with the modelled results, we conclude that the regular composition variations in the mafic arc igneous rocks from Group A to Group C reflect the compositional evolution of slab fluids with time during the oceanic subduction. Therefore, the studied mafic arc igneous rocks have recorded a continuous slab-mantle interaction and slab fluid evolution due to the subduction of Shangdan oceanic crust during the early Paleozoic. • Three groups of mafic arc igneous rocks are identified in the Qinling orogen. • They show temporal composition variation from depletion to enrichment. • This reflects slab fluid composition evolution with more sediment melts involved over time. A study of teleseismic P-wave tomography was carried out along the Central Orogenic Belt of China (COBC) consisting of the Qinling, Tongbai, Hong'an, Dabie and Sulu orogens that were created by northward subduction of the South China Block beneath the North China Block to subarc depths in the Paleozoic to Mesozoic. The results show the presence of high velocity anomaly underneath the COBC and its adjacent cratonic regions but the absence of high velocity anomaly in the lower lithosphere beneath the COBC. The high velocity anomaly is deep underneath the COBC, possibly representing the relic of the subducted Paleo-Tethyan oceanic slab predating the continental deep subduction of the South China Block. The high velocity anomaly is also deep underneath the southeastern part of the North China Block, possibly being a relic of the subducted Paleo-Pacific slab. However, no relic of the deeply subducted continental slab is seismically detected in the lower lithosphere beneath the Dabie and Sulu orogens, though the occurrence of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks in the two orogens has clearly demonstrated continental deep subduction to subarc depths in the Triassic. Instead there is only the relatively flat and uniform Moho boundary beneath the COBC region, indicating that the subduction-thickened continental lithosphere along the COBC has lost its root. It is inferred that the orogenic root beneath the COBC region has been foundered into the asthenospheric mantle at the postcollisional stage. The foundering would have taken place in the Early Cretaceous as indicated by the extensive occurrence of magmatic and migmatitic rocks along the COBC. As a consequence, the seismic tomography cannot detect the deeply subducted continental slab remnant from the Triassic period. The Trans-North China Orogen (TNCO) is suggested to form under a transition from subduction to collision from 2500 Ma to ∼ 1850 Ma, and the Taihua TTG gneiss in the Xiong'ershan district is thought to have formed in an Andean-type continental arc setting or island arc setting during this geological event. However, to date, the geochemical record of the subducted oceanic slab is still lacking. This study focuses on Hf-O isotopic analyses of zircon xenocrysts from the Qi189 hornblende monzogranite, Qiyugou Au orefield, TNCO. The results reveal that zircon xenocrysts with ages from 2304 Ma to 1934 Ma generally have low-δ18O values from 2.66‰ to 3.83‰ and high-εHf(t) values from 2.7 to 7.8. These zircon grains were generated from remelting of high-temperature altered gabbroic rocks of the subducted oceanic slab during the transition from compression to extension. The Neoproterozoic Jiangnan accretionary orogenic belt recorded the accretion and collision of the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks to form a stablized South China Block, but related geometry and kinematics is poorly constrained, leading to largely varied tectonic models. Here, we present detailed field investigation and kinematic analysis of the plutonic-metamorphic complexes in the Yuanbaoshan and Sanfang areas of the west Jiangnan orogenic belt, which enables identification of extensional granite-cored domes. In the dome margins, down-dipping lineations display a radial pattern and dome dominated foliations are extensively developed. The shearing structures within the plutonic-metamorphic complexes display extensional shearing surrounding the Yuanbaoshan and Sanfang granitic dome cores. Gneissic granites and massive ones from both the Yuanbaoshan and Sanfang plutons yield comparable crystallization ages of ca. 835–823 Ma that are within age errors of each other, as are the sheared recrystallized asymmetric quartz veins and mylonites dated at 831 Ma. Overall ages of the deformed Sibao Group and the undeformed overlying Danzhou Group, along with those of the granite plutons and mylonites, suggest formation of the granite-cored domes at ca. 835–823 Ma, coeval to the timing of emplacement of the granitic plutons. Locally, top-to-the-E thrusting structures are also observed in the west Yuanbaoshan and Sanfang areas and are inferred as at ca. 860–835 Ma, coinciding well with E- or SE- directed structures developed elsewhere in the Jiangnan orogenic belt, but in contrast with doming extensional shearing structures. Therefore, overall geometry and kinematics in the west Jiangnan belt indicate development of granitic dome related extensional ductile shearing deformation dated at ca. 835–823 Ma and a possible top-to-the-E compressional ductile thrusting deformation within 860–835 Ma. Given the previously inferred regional geology observations, along with age and chemical data across the Jiangnan orogenic belt, the dominant extensional shearing deformation in the region argue for a slab roll-back event within an accretionary belt, typical of domes-and-basins structures formed in accretionary convergent continental margin. Abstract: The Baishiquan and Pobei Early Permian mafic–ultramafic intrusions were emplaced into Proterozoic metamorphic rocks in the Central Tianshan and the Beishan Fold Belt, northern Xinjiang, NW China. The Baishiquan intrusion comprises mainly gabbro, and mela-gabbro sills occurring within and along the margins of the gabbro body. In the Pobei intrusion, two distinct gabbroic packages, a lower gabbro and the main gabbro, are intruded and overlain by small cumulate wehrlite bodies. Both intrusions are characterized by enrichments of large ion lithophile elements and Th and U relative to the high field strength elements, and show strong negative Nb and Ta anomalies and positive K and Pb anomalies, leading to higher Th/Yb and Nb/Yb than in mid-ocean ridge basalt and ocean island basalt. These features are comparable with subduction-related mafic rocks and post-collisional magmas. Geological and geochemical considerations indicate that the parental magmas of the two intrusions were derived from decompression melting of ascending asthenosphere and reacted with overlying subduction-modified lithospheric mantle. We believe that these parental magmas were generated by post-collisional extension along the Chinese Tianshan, perhaps triggered by slab break-off or delamination of thickened lithosphere. Relatively lower (143Nd/144Nd)i and higher (87Sr/86Sr)i than other Permian mafic–ultramafic intrusions in the eastern Chinese Tianshan indicate that the parental magmas of these two intrusions experienced significant contamination by old crustal rocks. We propose a flat-slab subduction model for Mesozoic South China based on both new sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) U-Pb zircon data and a synthesis of existing structural, geochronological, and sedimentary facies results. This model not only explains the development of a broad (~1300-km-wide) intracontinental orogen that migrated from the coastal region into the continental interior between Ca. 250 Ma and 190 Ma, but can also account for the puzzling chain of events that followed: the formation of a shallow-marine basin in the wake of the migrating foreland fold-and-thrust belt, and the development of one of the world's largest Basin and Range-style magmatic provinces after the orogeny. The South China record may serve as an example of the multiple effects of flat-slab subduction, including migrating orogenesis and foreland flexure, synorogenic sagging behind the active orogen, postdelamination lithospheric rebound, and the development of a Basin and Range-style broad magmatic province. The slab dynamic processes, such as roll-back during oceanic subduction and break-off during collision orogenesis, would affect the movement of mantle material and the interaction between crust and mantle, accompanied by significant amounts of magmatism. Providing accurate depictions for these processes are extremely difficult, especially in the case of ancient orogens. Here, we present an integrated study of petrology, geochronology, geochemistry and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopes for Early Paleozoic granitoids from the Duojielaka, Ledu and Binglingsi plutons of the southeastern Qilian orogen. Our LA-ICP-MS U Pb zircon data show that these granitoids were emplaced at 476–432 Ma. The petrological and geochemical data suggest that the ~476 Ma Duojielaka porphyritic syenogranites formed by feldspar-dominated fractionation from relatively K-rich basaltic rock-derived adakitic parental magma. The ~454 Ma Duojielaka biotite monzogranites are highly fractionated I-type granites and were derived from basement orthogneisses mixed with minor mafic rocks. The Ledu fine- and medium-grained quartz diorites (~446 and ~452 Ma) are high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic and were produced by partial melting of relatively old K-rich mafic crust followed by minor mixing with mantle-derived magmas. The ~432 Ma Binglingsi biotite monzogranites with adakitic characteristics most likely originated by partial melting of thickened mafic lower crust. Based on the new data, in combination with previously published data, we suggest that the roll-back of the South Qilian oceanic slab occurred during the Middle Cambrian to early Middle Ordovician. The Duojielaka porphyritic syenogranites represented crustal anatexis in an arc front associated with slab roll-back. The Late Ordovician–early Middle Silurian intrusive rocks probably resulted from diachronous slab break-off in the post-collisional stage. The rocks record the opening of the break-off window from east to west and the gradual heat propagation from the central part to the southern and northern margins of the eastern Central Qilian due to the widening of break-off window and asthenospheric upwelling. • Cretaceous granitic intrusions formed by three magmatic events in SE China. • The intensity of crust–mantle interactions increased gradually from 145 Ma to 86 Ma. • These granitic intrusions are related to Paleo-Pacific subduction or rollback. The geodynamic transformation of the Cathaysia Block and its relationship with the Cretaceous granitic intrusions have been controversial in recent decades. In this study, petrology, zircon U–Pb ages, Lu–Hf isotopic composition, whole-rock geochemistry and Sr–Nd isotopes were carried on Cretaceous granites that were collected from the Fujian province, SE China. Combining previously published ages with the new ages obtained in this study indicates that the magmatism in the study area occurred in three distinct stages at 145–137 Ma, 136–118 Ma and 107–86 Ma. The first stage I-type granites were intruded at 137 ± 1 Ma and 145 ± 1 Ma, which are characterized by low ε Nd (t) values of −7.3 to −6.8 and ε Hf (t) values of −12.5 to −2.5. It was formed by partial melting of Mesoproterozoic medium-to-high K basaltic rocks in the thickened crust of ~40 km without significant hybridization of mantle-derived magmas and fractional crystallization. The second stage highly differentiated I-type granites yield zircon U-Pb ages of 125 ± 1 Ma and 128 ± 1 Ma, which contain slightly negative ε Nd (t) values of −5.4 to −5.3 and ε Hf (t) values of −8.4 to −3.2. It was generated by partial melting of the Mesoproterozoic basement at the depth of 30–40 km triggered by underplating of a small amount of mantle-derived magma, with primary crustal melts undergoing plagioclase-dominated fractionation crystallization. The third stage I-type granites yield zircon U-Pb ages of 104 ± 1 Ma and 105 ± 1 Ma, which contain ε Nd (t) values of −1.7 to −7.3 and ε Hf (t) values of −6.0 to −0.5. It was derived from partial melting of Mesoproterozoic basaltic source at a depth of ~30 km. Besides, a mass of mantle-derived magma was mixed into the crustal melts, accompanied with plagioclase-dominated fractionation crystallization. Combining previously published data and those obtained in this study provides significant information for the tectonic evolution of Paleo-Pacific. In stage 1 (145–137 Ma), the existence of I-type granites and adakitic rocks suggests that the dip-angle subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate led to the partial melting of the thickened lower crust under the compressional environment. In stage 2 (136–118 Ma), the generation of I-type and A-type granitic magmas imply the thinning of the lithospheric crust under the extensional environment and the upwelling of the asthenospheric mantle, which are caused by slab rollback of Paleo-Pacific. In stage 3 (107–86 Ma), the appearance of much more I-type and A-type granites indicates that the break-off of the Paleo-Pacific plate led to much stronger crust–mantle interactions under the extensional environment.
