This paper proposes a novel consequent‐pole dual‐stator linear permanent magnet vernier machine (DS‐LPMVM) with PM in the mover slot opening, which has a bi‐directional flux modulation effect. The novelty of the proposed machine consists of consequent‐pole double‐sided topology with toroidal windings placed in the mover slot, as well as PMs both on the stator and mover slot to improve the air gap magnetic field. The dual‐stator adopts misalignment structure to suppress detent force and produce steady thrust. The electromagnetic parameters of the proposed DS‐LPMVM are evaluated and quantitatively compared with the conventional linear permanent magnet vernier machine (C‐LPMVM) in terms of air‐gap flux density, no‐load back EMF, inductance, and thrust. The geometrical parameters are designed to reduce the detent force. By analyzing the optimized structure parameters of the two machines, the good electromagnetic performances of the proposed machine are verified by the finite element method (FEM) and semi‐analytical method, and both results of the two methods are basically the same. It is found that the amount of PMs for the proposed machine is reduced by 20% compared to the C‐LPMVM, but the average thrust is increased by 20.7% and the thrust ripple is reduced to 4.04%. The results show that the proposed DS‐LPMVM has better flux modulation effect and thrust characteristics than C‐LPMCM. Net zero and electrification targets are continuing to enforce a need for the development of high-performance electrical machines, increasingly based on the use of rare earth permanent magnets. Biased flux motors have the potential to overcome some of the disadvantages associated with more conventional electrical machines. Since their introduction, there has been a consistent trend towards new and improved topologies, all relying on the same principles of operation. In this paper, a new alternative operation is proposed where the magnetic flux density offset of each module is different. The resulting asymmetric biased excitations of the magnets leads to a flux concentration in the air gap. Placement of magnets in the slot-opening area is shown to produce a higher average torque at a higher power factor. It is mathematically shown that the conventional methods used to investigate the effect of each group of magnets separately cannot be used for the explanation of this operation principle. Therefore, it is necessary to simultaneously consider both groups of magnets in the magnetic equivalent circuit. Due to the use of magnets in these motors, thermal conditions are also investigated. Finally, a comprehensive comparison between several stator-situated-magnet motors is presented. The performance of the proposed motor is improved in terms of average torque, torque density, PM torque density, power factor, and overload capability. Due to the configuration of coreless stators and two synchronously rotated rotors, hollow-cup machines (HCMs) enjoy the merits of negligible cogging torque and core loss. Consequently, HCMs have been successfully employed as high-speed electric machines in the aerospace field, which requires high precision and low thermal dissipation. However, the permanent magnet (PM) thickness and air-gap length of conventional HCM are uniform, resulting in various harmonics in the air-gap flux density as well as back-EMF. These harmonics inevitably produce an electromagnetic torque ripple, which has not met the increasing demand for ultraprecision in recent years. Since the inner rotor of HCMs only consists of an iron core, this paper proposes a novel sinusoidal-shaped inner rotor, which can change the harmonics of air-gap permeance, to adjust the harmonics of air-gap flux density and back-EMF. HCMs with the proposed inner rotors have a significant 87% reduction in torque ripple compared to conventional HCMs. Meanwhile, compared to conventional methods, HCMs with the proposed inner rotor exhibit comparable torque ripple and higher average torque. Permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motors (PMA-SynRMs) are widely used in various industries as a relatively inexpensive and high-performance energy conversion device. The model proposed in this article relies on a magnetic pole-biased permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor with a magnetic focusing effect. Two types of models with Halbach array and magnetic focusing effect have been proposed, which increase excitation and make the internal magnetic circuit of the rotor more saturated, thereby achieving higher electromagnetic torque. Through finite element simulation analysis and verification, the motor characteristics of the basic and proposed permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motor were calculated, including the air gap flux density and back electromotive force (EMF) in no-load analysis, as well as the average torque, torque ripple, and efficiency in load analysis. In addition, multi-objective optimization was also conducted on the rotor topology structure of proposed model two, using the uniform Latin hypercube sampling method to uniformly sample the data samples and the Pearson correlation coefficients to perform a sensitivity analysis on the data. The pilOPT multi-objective autonomous optimization algorithm was used to perform multi-objective autonomous optimization on parameters with high correlation, and the best-found solution based on the Pareto front was selected. Compared with proposed model two, the average torque of the optimized model increased by 18.14%, the efficiency increased by 1.05% and the torque ripple decreased by 5.22%. Axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines are being increasingly used in several applications owing to their outstanding features. Most importantly, they are characterized by a high power-to-weight ratio, compactness, and high efficiency. Designers of AFPM generators seek to achieve the required performance and ensure the proper operation of the machine for the targeted application. Among many other parameters, the performance of the machine is highly dependent on the air gap magnetic flux density and no-load induced voltage. Accurate computation of such parameters helps minimize the overall design process. Therefore, the estimation of flux density plays a vital role in determining many other dependent parameters in AFPM machines. This manuscript provides a robust Correlated Analytical Method (CAM) for calculating the air gap magnetic flux density and no-load induced voltage of Coreless Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generators (CAFPMG). CAM is an extended version of the Simplified Analytical Method (SAM) that is adjusted using correlated coefficients derived from an experimentally validated Three-Dimensional (3D) Finite Element Model (FEM). A complete procedure for the calculations is provided. The results showed the integrity of the CAM compared to the results obtained from the validated FEM. Studies on the central and bilateral bridges of interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors often focus on individual mechanical strength or electromagnetic performance, lacking comparative studies on the electromagnetic performance of motors with different central and bilateral bridges under the same mechanical strength. This paper designs three rotors with different central and bilateral bridges and compares the electromagnetic performance of the three motors. First, to ensure the safe operation of the three rotors at high speeds, the mechanical stress of each rotor has been analyzed using the finite-element method (FEM). Subsequently, the major electromagnetic performances of the three motors are analyzed and compared, including the air-gap flux density, back electromotive force (back-EMF), inductance, salience, torque, power, loss, efficiency, and demagnetization. The results indicate that the rotor without central bridges has the largest leakage flux and the lowest torque but exhibits minimal torque ripple. The rotor with narrower bilateral bridges has the highest torque and maximum torque ripple. The torque performance of the rotor with wider bilateral bridges lies between the two aforementioned motors, and it possesses the highest efficiency. In the end, by adjusting the dimensions of the permanent magnets, the torque of all three models increases, but the motor with narrower bilateral bridges still has the largest torque. To reduce the iron loss and torque ripple of an external rotor consequent pole (ERCP) motor used in an electric vehicle air-conditioning compressor, the magnetic pole structure of the motor was improved, and an unequal piecewise consequent pole (CP) structure was designed. The performance of the motor is optimized by reducing the harmonic content in the air gap flux density and reducing the iron saturation degree of the motor. The designed CP structure can significantly reduce the iron loss and torque ripple of the motor. Based on the Taguchi method, the optimal size parameters of the unequal piecewise CP structure are determined, and the final optimization design scheme is obtained. The results of finite element simulation and high-precision iron loss model show the following: compared with the original motor, the iron loss and torque ripple of the motor with the final optimized design scheme are significantly reduced. Hybrid switch reluctance motors belong to the family of Switch Reluctance Motors (SRMs) that attenuate magnetic saturation and increase air gap magnetic flux by exploiting permanent magnets. The auxiliary air gap flux generated by permanent magnets can affect the average torque and ripple. Typically, reducing torque ripple results in a decrease in average torque. This paper focuses on reducing torque ripple and enhancing average torque in a 6/10 pole hybrid switch reluctance motor by inserting two symmetrical notches on its rotor. Also, the lengths of the magnet and rectangular notches are optimized using the infinite element method and sensitivity analysis. In this article, rotor designs utilizing assisted-poles are investigated for a high-torque density spoke-type permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) to explore the rich air-gap magnetic field harmonics and torque generation mechanism. Due to their higher average torque output, spoke-type PMSMs with FSCW are increasingly used in high-torque density applications. However, slot harmonics generate torque ripples that are difficult to eliminate in FSCW spoke-type PMSMs. Removing slot harmonics from the stator or winding results in a large drop in torque since their winding factors are identical to those of the main harmonic. Therefore, rotor designs having assisted-poles (symmetrical and asymmetrical) are investigated in this work to mitigate slot harmonics and minimize torque ripples. Firstly, the air-gap flux density is analyzed for the machines having assisted-poles, and a model of interaction between the stator and rotor-MMF harmonics is created and validated through Finite element analysis (FEA) to analyze the torque production mechanism. In addition, an analytical relationship between the assisted-poles' dimensions and the generated torque harmonics is proposed. Furthermore, a generalized torque ripple reduction concept for the FSCW spoke-type PMSM having asymmetrically designed assisted-poles is presented. The proposed design and optimization method are validated through analytical calculations and FEA simulations, and a brief comparative analysis is presented for the analyzed machine prototypes. It has been established that the machine designed by applying the proposed asymmetrical assisted-poles can achieve a reduction in torque ripples while also significantly lowering cogging torque in comparison to the conventional spoke-type PMSMs and other spoke-type PMSMs with rotor having symmetrical assisted-poles. Demagnetisation fault (DF) is a common rotor fault in the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). DF can cause obvious changes in the magnetic field of PMSMs. As a result, previous DF diagnosis methods mainly depends on magnetic field analysis. However, conventional analysis methods based on the magnetic potential‐permeability method, sub‐domain method and magnetic equivalent circuit method are not suitable for DF condition. In addition, DF diagnosis is further complicated by various operating conditions. To address these issues, a robust DF diagnosis method is proposed for PMSM based on d‐axis magnetic network model using magnetic field reconstruction. The proposed fault diagnosis method employs magnetic field reconstruction to obtain the radial air‐gap flux density under the open‐circuit condition. Subsequently, a d‐axis magnetic network is established to solve the demagnetisation coefficient matrix in the DF state. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulations and experiments. Both results demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately recognise uniform DF and partial DF with multiple demagnetised permanent magnets, exhibiting great robustness against different operating conditions. Despite continuous effort to minimize torque ripple, the reduction of vibration has not been yet achieved due to the lack of link between these two performances. The difficulty of investigating the relationship stems from the fact that torque is solely influenced by tangential force whereas vibration is directly tied to radial force. In this paper, the correlation between torque ripple and vibration in an IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) is established by examining the air-gap flux density in both radial and tangential directions. Its temporal and spatial harmonics are analyzed. A six-pole nine-slot IPMSM is used as a base configuration, and the air-gap flux density is varied by changing the height of a stator tooth tip. In the previous study, the same approach has been done to observe how to reduce torque ripple effectively. In this study, however, it is found that the trend of torque ripple is not the same as that of vibration with respect to the height of a pole tip, and the relation between the two is thoroughly observed and explained. In this paper, a novel method to design and optimization of a 1.5 kW, 4-pole, 36-slot salient-pole permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPPMSM) based on a three-step skewed pole shoe method to reduce the output torque ripple and the cogging torque is investigated. In the first step, an initial model of the SPPMSM is designed, simulated, and verified through the Finite-Element method (FEM). The simulation results ensure the electromagnetic performance of the initial model of the machine under any operating conditions. Next, a novel method to re-design and optimize the SPPMSM based on a three-step skewed pole shoe shape is presented.. The significant results obtained from the optimized model of the SPPMSM are as: The output average torque and the air gap flux density are increased approximately by 12.65% and 3.33%, respectively compared to the initial design of the SPPMSM. The torque ripple is an important parameter in the design of the machine, and so, is decreased by about 16.03% which is equal to 10.41% in comparison with the initial model which is equal to 12.41%. The cogging torque in the initial model of the SPPMSM is equal to 0.036 N.m and with a 19.44% reduction, in the optimized model, it is 0.029 N.m. The two‐dimensional (2D) analytical model for the calculation of the components of the flux density distribution in the air gap in a dual‐stator axial‐field flux‐switching permanent magnet (PM) motor (DSAFFSPM) is presented. The novelties of this study are deriving a 2D hybrid analytical model and replacing the rotor teeth with some surface currents for the calculation of air‐gap magnetic flux density for the first time in the DSAFFSPM motor. The 2D analytical model for DSAFFSPMs is more challenging due to the doubly salient structure and inner PM of the stator. 1D analytical interior PMs are first transferred to the bore of the stator body using the magnetic equivalent circuit model (MEC). Next, the effects of the rotor teeth are taken into consideration by injecting virtual surface currents for 2D analytical model. Applying boundary conditions and solving the Laplace/Poisson equations, the vertical and tangential flux components of the flux density distribution in the air‐gap DSAFFSPM motor are computed. A new analytic model for calculating of the air‐gap flux density (AGFD) of surface‐mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines (SMPMSMs) is presented. This proposed model is capable to taking into account the effects of magnetic saturation, armature reaction and stator slots opening. Furthermore, the real form of air‐gap distribution and spatial distribution of flux density of the PM poles are considered. The armature reaction effect is modeled using phasor diagram analysis of the motor as a function of the load torque, the armature current amplitude, power factor and the inverse air gap length. Also, saturation phenomenon predicted using the new non‐linear proposed function in connection with the armature reaction effects and the properties of the lamination material. It is shown that the proposed model capable to predicting acceptably the air gap flux density waveform of the SMPMSMs at lagging and leading power factors and with the load torque variation. Variable flux memory machines (VFMMs) have become a research hotspot due to their adjustable air-gap flux with the employment of low coercive force (LCF) permanent magnets (PMs). Series hybrid magnet VFMMs (SHM-VFMMs) utilizing series-magnetic-circuit high coercive force (HCF) and LCF PMs are extensively investigated due to their excellent unintentional demagnetization (UD) withstand capability. Nevertheless, the existing researches still focus on the UD of LCF PMs under heavy load operation, and the remagnetization issue remains unreported. Therefore, in this paper, the over-load unintentional remagnetization (UR) effect of the a dual-layer-SHM-VFMM (DLSHM-VFMM) is first revealed, and its mechanism is investigated and analyzed in depth based on finite element (FE) analyses. This study focuses on designing and optimizing Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) using hybrid rare earth and ferrite materials. Two distinctive rotor topologies of the Hybrid-Type Permanent Magnet Motor (HTPMM) are proposed: series and parallel magnetic circuits. Initially, the rotor topology and magnetic circuit principles of both the prototype and the designed HTPMM are introduced. Subsequently, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is employed to optimize the two HTPMMs, determining the final optimized parameters. Thise study further analyzes the cost advantage of HTPMMs from the perspective of permanent magnet materials, and detailed finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the electromagnetic performance, including the air-gap flux density, no-load back electromotive force, cogging torque, load torque characteristics, and demagnetization properties. A comparative analysis of the prototype and two designed motors reveals that the HTPMM exhibits similar performance to the prototype, effectively reducing the usage of rare earth materials and significantly lowering the manufacturing costs. This research validates the feasibility of reducing rare earth material usage while maintaining a similar performance and provides a new perspective for the design of permanent magnet motors. Cogging torque can affect the performance of permanent magnet (PM) homopolar inductor machines (HIMs). In order to find the reduction methods of the PM HIM cogging torque, it is necessary to investigate its production mechanism and analytical model. In this paper, the production mechanism of the PM HIM cogging torque is revealed from the perspective of air‐gap field modulation principle. It is found that the air‐gap permeance of PM HIMs can modulate their air‐gap magneto‐motive force (MMF) and then a large number of modulated air‐gap magnetic fields are generated. These magnetic fields with identical production condition but different rotation speeds or rotation directions can interact with each other, hence the production of the PM HIM cogging torque. By the combination of energy method and air‐gap field modulation principle, the cogging torque analytical model of PM HIMs is derived. Based on the obtained analytical model, the methods for reducing the PM HIM cogging torque are further analyzed. Finally, a 48‐slot/4‐pole (48S4P) PM HIM is designed and exampled. The air‐gap flux density of the 48S4P PM HIM is simulated by three‐dimensional (3‐D) finite element analysis (FEA). Based on the harmonic analysis for the simulated results, the correctness of the proposed cogging torque production mechanism is validated. In addition, a prototype of the 48S4P PM HIM is manufactured. The cogging torque in the prototype is obtained by the analytical model, 3‐D FEA and experiments, respectively. The combination of permanent magnets and electrically excited windings creates an air gap magnetic field. The development of a hybrid magnetic circuit motor with an adjustable magnetic field is of great significance. This article introduces a hybrid magnetic circuit motor design that combines salient pole electromagnetic and permanent magnets. A tubular magnetic barrier has been designed to reduce inter-pole leakage and enhance the usage rate of permanent magnets in the hybrid magnetic circuit motor. The optimum eccentricity of the rotor has been accurately designed, resulting in an improved sinusoidal distribution of the air gap magnetic density waveform. An analysis of the static composite magnetic field under various excitation currents has been conducted, showcasing the capability of the hybrid magnetic circuit motor to stably adjust the air gap flux density level and output torque. A transverse flux linear motor is a special type of linear motor with a high thrust force density, and it has broad application prospects in the field of linear direct-drive systems. In the process of oil production, the vibration of the linear motor poses a significant amount of harm to the system due to its special slender structure. This paper focuses on the electromagnetic vibration of a transverse flux permanent magnet linear submersible motor (TFPMLSM). Firstly, the no-load air gap flux density is calculated based on the field modulation principle. Secondly, the radial electromagnetic force (REF) of the TFPMLSM is calculated, and the finite element method (FEM) is used to analyze the time-space and spectral characteristics of the REF. Then, the influence of secondary eccentricity on the frequency spectrum of the REF is further concluded. Finally, the natural frequencies of each vibration mode are calculated using the modal superposition method and the influence of the REF on the motor vibration is obtained through magnetic-structural coupling analysis. The research results found that the motor does not cause resonance at low speeds, and the fundamental frequency of REF has the greatest impact on electromagnetic vibration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a generalized torque estimation method is proposed for synchronous motors, including surface permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs), synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs), and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) for building the analytical motor model. The average motor torque is estimated using the Lorentz force by the generated flux density in the air gap to determine the relationships among torque, flux density, and injected current. In the proposed method, the generated flux density is derived step by step by considering the effects of magnetic flux saturation, the stator slot, the rotor barrier, and permanent magnets (PMs) to ensure that the generated average torque complies with the operating condition of the motor. To verify the proposed method, the output torque of finite element analysis (FEA), Maxwell 2D, is compared to the proposed method in a SPMSM. Moreover, a phasor diagram is plotted to determine the mechanism through which torque is generated in SynRMs and IPMSMs. A SynRM and an IPMSM with ferrites PMs are analyzed using the proposed method, FEA, and the experimental results of this study indicate the effectiveness. To research the magnetic field and mechanical characteristics of the permanent magnet governor, the static magnetic field of the sector permanent magnet is analyzed by the molecular current method in the permanent magnet governor. The magnetic flux distribution is acquired at any spatial position. Comparing the analytical value with the simulation value, the results show that they are basically consistent. Based on the analytical formula, the influence of the radial position, radial length, thickness, and pole number on the magnetic induction intensity of the permanent magnet governor is studied. Thus, it provides the theoretical reference for the structural optimized design. At the same time, a test bench was set up to measure the magnetic induction intensity. The calculation and experimental results show that the magnetic induction strength of the permanent magnet is increased by 27.5%, the axial component of the air gap flux density is increased by 14.3%, and the permanent magnet material is reduced by 7.84%. The aim of this article is to develop a rotor reconstruction method for the V‐shaped interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine so that the subdomain method to analytically calculate the air‐gap flux density can be applied. With the proposed method, the V‐shaped IPM rotor with rectangular magnets, magnetic barriers, and saturated iron bridges can be transformed into a U‐shaped equivalent analytical model. The geometry and material parameters of the magnets in the equivalent U‐shaped model can be determined according to the flux equivalence in the air‐gap of the motor. Then using the subdomain method on the U‐shaped equivalent rotor, the static magnetic field problem can be solved and the flux density distribution in the air‐gap be obtained. The validity of this method and accuracy of the solution is verified by the finite element method with case studies. Compared with existing methods, the improved subdomain method has higher accuracy in calculating flux density including radial and tangential components. The presented rotor reconstruction method is not only limited to single‐layer V‐shaped rotor, it can also be applied to other IPM rotors with more complex structures. Introduction. The drive electric motor is one of the key components in the traction chain of an electric vehicle. Traditional radial flux motors used in electric vehicles, which use permanent magnets or induction motors in an electric field, are experiencing significant development aimed at optimizing their weight and cost. However, it can only go so far, so switching to a completely different type of machine, such as an axial flow, might be a good alternative. The novelty to this item is an axial flux permanent magnet motorization with non-slotted TORUS-NS rotor (single interior stator with two external rotors North-South) type housed in the wheel of the vehicle; this allows power to pass directly from the motor to the wheel, increasing the efficiency of the motor. System complexity is also less, as the transmission, differentials and driveshaft are eliminated. Purpose is to equip the electric car and choose the motor adapted to the application and the available space. The smaller size and weight allows for a lighter vehicle and more batteries, thus increasing range. The focus on customization is because vehicle performance is so dependent on the quality of the vehicle architecture, battery pack and axial flux motor design. The results obtained are in good agreement of accuracy, in particular the flux density at the air gap. The investigation is carried out by the finite element method. Recently, the interest in consequent-pole flux-switching permanent magnet (CP-FSPM) machines has been increasing because of the flux-focusing PM arrangements and the removal of the flux-barrier effect. A simple and rigid outer-rotor salient pole rotor structure can be adopted in CP-FSPM machines, making them applicable for in-wheel direct-drive applications. In this study, three CP-FSPM machines with II-shaped (II-PM), V-shaped (V-PM), and straight U-shaped PM (SU-PM) arrays are analyzed and compared. Moreover, a CP-FSPM machine with inclined U-shaped PM (IU-PM) arrays is proposed to improve the flux-focusing effect and stator slot utilization. The working principles of CP-FSPM machines are analyzed by adopting a semi-analytical model. Combining the finite element analysis (FEA) results of air gap flux density and the analytical model of phase back electromotive force (EMF), the contributions of multiple working harmonics to the back EMF are quantitatively analyzed. Additionally, 6/16 and 6/17 CP-FSPM machines with different PM arrangements are globally optimized. Both the no-load and on-load performance of the optimized machines are included in the performance comparison. The results illustrate that the 6/16 and 6/17 machines exhibit their respective merits, and the IU-PM machine shows the best torque production ability in these CP-FSPM machines with the same design criteria. The effect of unbalanced magnetic force and torque ripple of on the output performance of a double stator switched-flux permanent magnet machine would be investigated and compared, with particular reference to the machine's varying rotor pole number. The finite element analysis (FEA) predicted machine parameters are: unbalanced magnetic force (UMF), total harmonic distortion (THD), torque ripple (Tr), cogging torque and static torque. The considered machine types having 10-, 11-, 13- and 14-rotor pole numbers are designated as: 6S/10P, 6S/11P, 6S/13P and 6S/14P, respectively; 6S represents six (6) stator slot or teeth number. It is revealed that the machine types that have odd number of rotor poles would have lower machine output characteristics such as: low cogging torque, low torque ripple and low total harmonic distortion of the voltage, compared to the ones that have even number of rotor poles; though, with higher amount of unbalanced magnetic force on the rotor. Further, the sensitivity of the machine's output performances due to electric loadings is higher than its corresponding response as a result of machine's varying rotational speed. More so, the machine types having odd number of rotor poles would have higher air gap flux density magnitudes; and would also exhibit better average torque per magnet usage, which is desirable for reduced cost implications. Based on the magnetic gear effect, the field-modulated permanent-magnet machine (FMPMM) can realize the unequal pole design of the rotor PM field and the stator armature magnetic field. With the advantages of high torque density and high efficiency, the FMPMM has been widely studied in low-speed direct-drive applications. As a kind of machine excited by PMs, the performance of the FMPMM was affected by the demagnetization state. However, the method for establishing the FMPMM demagnetization model based on a finite element analysis (FEA) presented some problems, including tedious repeated modeling work and long calculation time-consuming under fine subdivision. Therefore, in this paper, a six-phase surface-mounted FMPMM was taken as an example, and an equivalent magnetic network (EMN) model was proposed for evaluating the machine performance under demagnetization. In order to realize the rapid establishing EMN models under diverse demagnetization types, the variable coercivity of PM was introduced. Furthermore, for the purpose of improving the calculation accuracy and shortening the calculation time, the least square method was used in fitting and analyzing the discrete results. Then, in order to verify the validity of the proposed EMN model, a prototype was fabricated and a testing platform was built. The air-gap flux density and the no-load back EMF obtained by the FEA, the proposed EMN model, and the experimental testing were compared. The results showed that the proposed EMN model can realize the rapid modeling and accurate analysis of the six-phase surface-mounted FMPMM under diverse demagnetization types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional diesel generators on a merchant ship, composed of a wound rotor synchronous generator and a four-stroke diesel engine, supply electrical power for various loads. Recently, shaft generators for merchant ships have been increasingly replacing diesel generators to reduce CO2 emissions through fuel efficiency improvement. In particular, permanent magnet synchronous generators have replaced induction generators due to their high-efficiency characteristics at light loads. The surface-mounted permanent magnet rotor can be a suitable topology owing to the relatively short constant power range. This generator can also operate as a motor according to the propulsion mode, so minimizing the harmonics of the induced voltage with the torque pulsation being essential. This paper proposes an alternative surface permanent magnet topology. Three magnets comprise one pole, with one bread-loaf magnet and two rectangular magnets. It helps to simplify the magnetization and assembly of the rotor because of the flat bottom shape of the magnet. Due to the low remanence of two rectangular magnets at the pole edge, this rotor structure effectively makes the air-gap magnetic flux density sinusoidal with production costs reduced. The step-skew suppresses higher-order harmonics. The total harmonic distortion comparison of the two-dimensional finite element analysis and the no-load test result shows under 6% difference from the interior permanent magnet prototype machine. A comparison of harmonic characteristics with other rotors shows that the proposed modular pole has sufficient competitiveness compared to the tapered bread-loaf type. It can be applied as a substitute for the tapered bread-loaf magnet in direct-drive ship propulsion systems and is expected to shorten the manufacturing process and time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, the authors propose two new Permanent Magnet (PM) embedded linear switched reluctance motors; one is a modular linear hybrid reluctance motor (MLHRM), and the other one is a segmental linear hybrid reluctance motor (SLHRM). Both structures employ PMs between the side teeth of the modules/segments. The main contribution of the PMs is to increase the air‐gap flux density, which results in an enhanced thrust, and decrease the magnetic saturation in iron parts. The magnetic equivalent circuit model is used to demonstrate the positive effect of inserting PMs in the MLHRM and SLHRM compared to their PMless counterparts. The optimal pole number and design procedure are illustrated. The simulation results are obtained in terms of static thrust, flux linkage, flux density distributions, and steady‐state current and thrust. The results show that the proposed MLHRM and SLHRM offer a higher thrust and lower current compared to their PMless form. Also, the PMs decrease the root mean square (RMS) current under the steady‐state performance of the motors, in which a higher thrust is produced with a lower RMS current. Finally, the MLHRM and SLHRM are fabricated and the test results are obtained and compared with the simulations, which illustrate a satisfactory agreement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel mechanical flux-adjusting permanent magnet linear eddy current brake with high performance and its nonlinear analytical model are proposed. The innovative point lies in attaching an additional mechanical magnetic adjuster directly above the interior permanent magnet bar, which can achieve flexible adjustment of the air-gap flux and improve the generation capacity of the braking force and its regulation range. Considering the importance of the analytic model in practical design, the average air-gap flux density and eddy current density are estimated based on the equivalent magnetic circuit method and Ampere's law, where the critical flux-weakening effect and leakage flux effect are calculated quantitatively. Then a practical theoretical model of braking force is derived based on the energy conversion and verified by the 3D finite-element method. Through analysis of the magnitude and regulation range of the braking force in a given range of speed, the advantages of the device and the electromagnetic force model are proved separately. In the design process of surface-mounted permanent magnet motor (SPMSM) for industrial robots and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools, to pursue the sinusoidal nature of the back electromotive force, the magnetic poles in the form of eccentric pole cutting structure are often used. To analyze the no-load air gap magnetic field of the SPMSM with eccentrically cut poles simply and accurately, a subdomain model magnetic field analytical calculation method based on equal-area integral block processing of permanent magnets is proposed. The problem that the traditional subdomain analysis model cannot be directly applied to the SPMSM with eccentrically cut poles of unequal thickness is solved. The proposed method considers the influence of stator slotting and the actual permeability of permanent magnets, and directly obtains the fundamental wave and harmonic components of the no-load air gap flux density by solving the subdomain model. The finite element method (FEM) is used to directly calculate the air gap magnetic field for verification. The results of the analytical method and the no-load air gap magnetic density calculated by the FEM are consistent, which verifies the accuracy of the proposed analytical method and can quickly guide the design of the SPMSM with eccentrically cut poles. A three-phase interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine with 18-stator-slots/12-rotor-poles and concentrated armature winding is commercially employed as a 10 kW integrated-starter-generator in a commercial hybrid electric vehicle. For comprehensive and fair evaluation, a pair of flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) brushless machines, namely one stator permanent magnet flux-switching (SPM-FS) machine, and one rotor permanent magnet flux-switching (RPM-FS) machine, are designed and compared under the same DC-link voltage and armature current density. Firstly, a SPM-FS machine is designed and compared with an IPM machine under the same torque requirement, and the performance indicates that they exhibit similar torque density; however, the former suffers from magnetic saturation and low utilization of permanent magnets (PMs). Thus, to eliminate significant stator iron saturation and improve the ratio of torque per PM mass, an RPM-machine is designed with the same overall volume of the IPM machine, where the PMs are moved from stator to rotor and a multi-objective optimization algorithm is applied in the machine optimization. Then, the electromagnetic performance of the three machines, considering end-effect, is compared, including air-gap flux density, torque ripple, overload capacity and flux-weakening ability. The predicted results indicate that the RPM-FS machine exhibits the best performance as a promising candidate for hybrid electric vehicles. To improve the performance of low-speed large-torque direct drive systems in limited space, an axial field flux-switching composite machine (AFFSCM) is proposed in this paper. The AFFSCM is composed of an axial field flux-switching permanent magnet machine (AFFSPMM) and magnetic gear. Therefore, it has the advantages of a compact structure, a large power/torque density, and a wide speed regulation range. First, the topology and magnetic modulation mechanism of the AFFSCM are investigated in detail. Then, the harmonic components of the inner/outer air-gap flux density are analyzed before and after the regulation of the rotary magnetic modulation ring. Based on this, the coupling conditions of the inner/outer air-gap magnetic field are deduced. Then the AFFSCM is initially designed, a three-dimensional finite-element model of the AFFSCM is built, and the electromagnetic performances are analyzed by the finite-element method, including the flux density of the inner/outer air-gap, the speed, the static torque, etc. Next, the cogging torque of the AFFSPMM is analyzed and optimized based on the magnetic modulation mechanism to suppress the torque ripple of the AFFSCM. In this paper, the oscillation phenomena of the scalar magnetic potential of iron pieces of spoke permanent magnet (PM) machines are analyzed and the effects of the oscillation on the air gap flux and back electro-motive force (EMF) are deeply investigated, especially for flux modulation machines such as vernier and flux switching PM (FSPM) machines. To these ends, the formula of the scalar magnetic potential is derived for a generalized spoke PM structure. It reveals that the oscillation phenomena depend on the slot/pole combination, consequently resulting in different behavior according to the machine types such as vernier and FSPM machines. Next, each core's potential given as a discrete function is developed into a continuous function of an air gap magneto-motive force (MMF) rotating and oscillating through Fourier series expansion. Making use of the developed MMF and the specific permeance of air gap, the equations of air gap flux density and back EMF are derived, which enable accurately estimating the suppression of the modulation flux and the back EMF due to the potential oscillation for different types of spoke PM machines. For validation, various magnetic characteristics are quantitatively examined for different type of spoke PM structures, including PM vernier and FSPM machines, and verified by comparing with FEM simulation results. This study elaborates upon a new modular split‐tooth permanent magnet‐assisted switched reluctance motor (MSTPM‐SRM). In the proposed topology, the stator comprises six modular E‐cores in which the middle poles are split into two teeth. Two permanent magnets (PMs) are placed between each module's middle and side poles. Primarily, the proposed topology is introduced. Next, the principle of operation of the proposed topology are elucidated, and the magnetic equivalent circuit analysis is adopted in order to validate the operational basics. It is proved that the embedded PMs significantly increase the air‐gap's flux density and adjusts the poles' flux density. The flux density distributions, static, and steady‐state characteristics of the proposed MSTPM‐SRM motor and its PMless counterpart are extracted by utilising 2‐D finite element analysis. It is illustrated that the average torque of the proposed MSTPM‐SRM is dramatically increased compared to its PMless counterpart, especially at high excitation currents. Furthermore, the cogging torque analysis is done and it is shown that the proposed structure has approximately zero cogging torque. Finally, a prototyping version of the proposed motor is fabricated, and the experimental results are elicited. It is shown that the experimental results endorse the simulation results. Wind energy as the cleanest source of renewable energy requires a highly efficient lightweight generator that provides maximum power density while having the least vibration noise and maintenance. In this study, an axial air gap transverse flux machine is presented, and all excitation sources are located in the stator. This structure provides lower core loss, weight and cost due to the full utilisation of the permanent magnets, SMC‐free structure and short magnetic flux path. In fact, by combining the features of a flux‐switching machine into a transverse flux generator with an axial air gap, it is possible to improve the performance of a direct‐drive wind turbine generator by overcoming traditional structures' challenges. To analyse the axial transverse flux switching permanent magnet generator performance characteristics, 3D finite element simulations have been performed, which have been validated by comparing them to the practical results of a single‐phase prototype. This paper deals with the design and analysis of a surface-mounted outer rotor in-wheel motor (IWM) with the aim of reducing cogging torque and torque ripple for electric vehicles. The proposed IWM is equipped with axial sinusoidal surface-mounted permanent magnets (PMs), with the purpose of producing sinusoidal air gap flux density distribution, thus to realize sinusoidal back electromotive force (EMF) and smooth electromagnetic torque. To highlight the advantage of the proposed IWM, the conventional IWM with tile-shaped PMs and the IWM with stepwise-shaped PMs are also studied for comparison. The finite element method in the commercial software package is utilized to analyze the performance of the three motors, including the radial flux density of air gap, back EMF, cogging torque, and electromagnetic torque. Through the quantitative comparison, it is found that the proposed IWM greatly reduces the cogging torque, highly improves the sinusoidality of back EMF, and nearly eliminates the torque ripple. Abstract in order to study the torque ripple of permanent magnet synchronous motor for electric vehicle, the method of modular poles instead of single pole is adopted to reduce the torque ripple. The modular poles consist of three kinds of permanent magnets with different remanence and are arranged in a sinusoidal distribution. The pole arc length and position of each magnetic pole are calculated according to the cutting area of sinusoidal air gap flux density wave. By changing the cutting area of sinusoidal air gap flux density wave, the optimal pole arc coefficient of each permanent magnet was determined, and the magnet pole combination with the smallest torque ripple value is obtained. The results show that the sine degree of back electromotive force is improved obviously, the cogging torque is decreased greatly, and the motor with modular poles has obvious effect on torque ripple suppression. The torque of the motor with different kinds of magnetic pole combination is more stable than that of the motor with the same kind of magnetic pole combination. This paper investigates the torque generating capabilities and performance comparison of induction machines (IM) and interior-permanent magnet (IPM) machines for electric vehicle (EV) traction applications. Electromagnetic performance characteristics, such as torque, torque ripple, air-gap flux density, etc. are quantitatively compared by changing the level of electric loading. Other performance metrics such as saturation factor, power losses, efficiency, and so on, as well as the flux-weakening capability and efficiency map have also been compared. For calculations of the electromagnetic performance characteristics, 2D time-stepping finite element analysis (FEA) has been employed. It has been revealed that due to the reduction in torque components of IPM machine as a consequence of magnet demagnetization, it cannot generate toque as high as IM under overloading operating conditions. This document deals with the design of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) to peripherally drive a counter-rotating pump inducer. The motor/pump is associated using a rim-driven principle where the motor's active parts are located at the periphery of the inducer blades. It proposes using a Halbach array of permanent magnets for the active rotor of the motor. This solution allows the generation of a Sinusoidal Electromotive Force (EMF). Therefore, a more stable electromagnetic torque is reached. An optimum geometry suitable for the inducer specifications while respecting operational constraints is determined. The obtained geometry is then simulated using the Finite Element Method. The results are satisfactory in terms of average torque and EMF waveform. Use of the Halbach array allows a significant improvement of the flux density in the air gap compared to a designed surface-mounted machine. Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) having high power density and high efficiency are rigorously researched in various premium applications. Among PMSMs, many studies have been conducted on interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) to improve torque ripple, but its accurate estimation is not straightforward. Therefore, a six-pole nine-slot (6p/9s) IPMSM is adopted as a base model due to its popularity in academia and industries, and other two pole/slot combinations (8p/12s and 10p/15s) are additionally selected to investigate the influence of a pole/slot combination on torque ripple. Torque performance is easily identified by analyzing tangential force due to their direct proportional relation. In this paper, magnetic flux densities in radial and tangential direction are systematically analyzed since tangential force is determined by the product of the two magnetic flux densities. The modification of a stator pole regarding its tip thickness is chosen as a key parameter in 6p/9s IPMSM. The thickness of a stator pole tip opposite to the direction of spin is more critical in torque ripple improvement. To improve the radial suspension force of heteropolar hybrid magnetic bearing (HMB), a novel AC six-pole heteropolar HMB is proposed. Firstly, the structure, magnetic circuit, and suspension force generation principle are introduced and analyzed. Secondly, the equivalent magnetic circuits are established. The mathematical models of magnetic resistances, air gap magnetic fluxes, and levitation force are derived by node magnetomotive force (MMF) method. The main parameters of prototype heteropolar HMB, such as outer and inner air-gap length, winding turns, and permanent magnets, are designed. Then, the analysis model is established by MagNet 3D. The magnetic circuit, air-gap flux density, suspension mechanism, force-current relationships, force-displacement relationships, and force coupling characteristics are analyzed and calculated. Finally, the experimental system was built to test the levitation force and levitation displacement waveforms. The research results have shown that the proposed novel six-pole heteropolar HMB has a reasonable structure and magnetic circuit. The design method is also proven to be correct. Furthermore, it is compared with the traditional heteropolar six-pole HMB, the maximum suspension forces in the X and Y directions are increased by 1.96 and 2.02 times, respectively. Analytical prediction of cogging torque needs accurate flux density and relative permeance closed-form expressions. The accurate two-dimensional (2D) air gap flux density distribution function and the 2D permeance function are currently almost always applied to surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) machines, instead of interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines, due to complications from IPMs severe magnetic saturation and leakage flux. To address these issues, this paper proposes a set of new methods to derive the accurate closed-form 2D expressions of IPMs for both flux density and relative permeance. As for the flux density 2D model, a virtual equivalence model for IPM is introduced, so that Laplace's equation and quasi-Poisson equation can be directly applied to IPM. As for permeance, the same virtual equivalence model also enables 2D models derivation for IPM. Subsequently, the resulting cogging torque analytical expression is obtained with the accurate relative permeance and air gap flux density models. The results from the proposed 2D analytical models showed similar accuracy to the finite element analysis (FEA). In addition, as demonstrated, the proposed 2D analytical models is a highly efficient tool set in the design process of cogging torque optimization, facilitating fast evaluation of different design factors. Thrust ripple and density greatly impact the performance of the linear machine and other linear actuators, causing positioning control precision, dynamic performance, and efficiency issues. Generalized pole-pair combinations are difficult to satisfy both the thrust and ripple for double salient reluctance linear machines. In this paper, a DC-Biased vernier reluctance linear machine (DCB-VRLM) is proposed to solve the abovementioned issues. The key to the proposed design is to reduce the ripple and enhance the thrust density with non-uniform teeth by utilizing and optimizing the modulated flux in the air gap. To effectively verify the proposed design, the DCB-VRLMs with different winding pole pairs and secondary poles are compared. The 12-slot/10-pole combination is chosen to adopt a non-uniform air gap structure. Moreover, the energy distribution of AC/DC winding is studied and optimized to further enhance the performance of the proposed DCB-VRLM. The results indicate that the DCB-VRLM with the non-uniform air gap has a lower thrust ripple, better overload capability, and higher thrust density, which confirms its superiority in long-stroke linear rail transit and vertical elevator applications.
