The development of trench-arc-backarc (TABA) systems is uniquely associated with modern-style plate tectonics on Earth. The Qilian orogenic belt in NW China records the evolution history of the Proto-Tethys Ocean at the transition time from the Proterozoic to Phanerozoic. This paper presents systematic studies of petrography, U–Pb chronology and geochemistry on various rocks from a middle-ocean ridge (MOR)-type ophiolite belt, active continental margin and back-arc basin in the Qilian orogenic belt to address the development of a modern-style TABA system. Arc magmas include felsic intrusions with ages of 531 to 477 Ma and felsic-mafic arc volcanic rocks with ages of 506 to 439 Ma, showing distinctive features of typical magmatic rocks formed at an Andean-type continental margin. The back-arc basin is recorded by a 490- to 448-Ma suprasubduction zone (SSZ)-type ophiolite with boninite, and Silurian turbidite flysch formation. We establish a three-stage tectonic history from the initiation of subduction to the formation of a mature Japan-Sea-type back-arc basin at the active continental margin in the Early Paleozoic era. (1) Northward subduction of Proto-Tethys Ocean initiated and the Andean-type continental arc developed at ~530 to 500 Ma with continual crustal thickening; (2) a tectonic transition occurred from an Andean-type active continental margin to a West Pacific-type active continental margin at ~500 to 490 Ma with rapid thinning of crust to ~35 km; and (3) mature ocean basins and back-arc-basin (BAB) ophiolites were formed in the back-arc extensional environment at ~490 to 450 Ma. As one of the largest Phanerozoic orogens in the world, the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is a natural laboratory for studies of continental dynamics and metallogenesis. This paper summarizes the research progresses of the accretionary processes and metallogenesis of the CAOB since the People's Republic of China was founded, and puts forward the prospect for future research. During the early period (1950s–1970s), several geological theories were applied to explain the geological evolution of Central Asia. In the early period of China's reform and opening-up, the plate tectonics theory was applied to explain the evolution of the northern Xinjiang and Xingmeng regions, and the opinion of subduction-collision between Siberian, Kazakhstan, and China-North Korea-Tarim plates was proposed. The idea of the Solonker-Yanbian suture zone was established. In the 1990s, the study of the CAOB entered a period of rapid development. One school of scholars including geologists from the former Soviet Union proposed a multi-block collision model for the assemblage of the CAOB. In contrast, another school of scholars, led by a Turkish geologist, Celal Şengör, proposed that the Altaids was formed through the growth and strike-slip duplicates of a single island arc, and pointed out that the Altaids is a special type of collisional orogen. During this period, Chinese geologists carried out a lot of pioneering researches on ophiolites and high-pressure metamorphic rocks in northern China, and confirmed the main suture zones accordingly. In 1999, the concept of "Central Asian metallogenic domain" was proposed, and it became one of the three major metallogenic domains in the world. Since the 21st century, given the importance for understanding continental accretion and metallogenic mechanism, the CAOB has become the international academic forefront. China has laid out a series of scientific research projects in Central Asia. A large number of important scientific research achievements have been spawned, including the tectonic attribution of micro-continents, timing and tectonic settings of ophiolites, magmatic arcs, identification and anatomy of accretionary wedges, regional metamorphism-deformation, (ultra)high-pressure metamorphism, ridge subduction, plume-plate interaction, archipelagic paleogeography and spatio-temporal framework of multiple accretionary orogeny, continental growth, accretionary metallogenesis, structural superposition and transformation, etc. These achievements have made important international influences. There still exist the following aspects that need further study: (1) Early evolution history and subduction initiation of the Paleo-Asian Ocean; (2) The accretionary mechanism of the extroversion Paleo-Asian Ocean; (3) The properties of the mantle of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and their spatiotemporal distribution; (4) The interaction between the Paleo-Asian Ocean and the Tethys Ocean; (5) Phanerozoic continental growth mechanism and its global comparison; (6) Accretionary metallogenic mechanism of the Central Asian metallogenic domain; and (7) Continental transformation mechanism. The East China Sea Shelf Basin (ECSSB) is a typical Meso-Cenozoic superimposed basin characterized by different tectonic frameworks, suffering multi-stage tectonism (e.g. the Indosinian, the Yanshanian and the Himalayan) since the Mesozoic. The Mesozoic ECSSB is a key place to our understanding of the tectonic evolution and dynamic mechanism in eastern South China and the subduction of the Izanagi Plate. Based on geological and geophysical results acquired over the last 10 years, this paper provides a summary of the distribution of Mesozoic strata, ascertains boundaries of the Mesozoic basin and proposes the division of the Mesozoic tectonic units in the ECSSB. The Mesozoic ECSSB was subdivided into the Western Fault Depression (WFD) characterized by dispersed Cretaceous half-grabens and the East Depression (ED) characterized by depressions at the early stage and grabens at the later stage. The WFD is composed of half-grabens formed under transtension, and the ED is composed of depression zones on the pre-Mesozoic basement under regional compression, indicating different dynamic mechanisms from the Cenozoic basins. Formation of the Mesozoic tectonic framework was controlled by the collision, compression and subduction of the Izanagi Plate and the Pacific Plate and also affected by the Indian Plate at a later stage. By comparison, this paper preliminarily proposes that the northern South China Sea and the ED of the ECSSB were originally a unified basin and jointly constituted a huge Mesozoic proto-basin in the East Asian continental margin. The Mesozoic tectonic unit division is helpful not only to discuss and resolve problems of ocean-continent differences and boundaries in southeastern South China but also to understand the tectonic nature of the East Asian continental margin, the dynamic mechanism of the Mesozoic basins and the transition of continental margin types. Tectonic migration is a common geological process during basin formation and development. However, there are many disputes about the tectonic migration and its dynamic mechanism in the Bohai Bay Basin. By analysis of Cenozoic tectonic, sedimentation and magmatism migration processes in the Bohai Bay Basin, combined with previous studies, the Cenozoic tectonic migration law in the Bohai Bay Basin is summarized in this paper. Affected by the subduction of the Indian Plate to the Eurasian Plate, its far-field effect of the related eastward asthenospheric extrusion and the subduction of the Pacific Plate to the Eurasian Plate, the Cenozoic Bohai Bay Basin is characterized by the gradual northeastward and eastward/seaward migration of tectonic units. The tectonic migration is accompanied by eastward migrations and younging of faulting, depressions in the Bohai Bay Basin, depocentres and subsidence centres and magmatism. Finally, based on intraplate and plate marginal processes and mechanisms, the tectonic migration mechanism in the Cenozoic Bohai Bay Basin is discussed in this paper. The gradual migration of tectonic-sedimentary-basin-forming movements is younger and younger towards the east, resulting from the combined effect of the collision and subduction among the Indian Plate and the Pacific Plate to the Eurasian Plate. • The fractured surrounding rock-shotcrete lining interface mechanism is studied. • The reinforcement mechanism of FRP in shotcrete lining is clarified. • Design suggestion for FRP reinforced shotcrete lining is proposed. Tunnel excavation in the southwestern area of China encounters many difficulties caused by the large deformation of extremely fractured surrounding rock, which is the product of high plate tectonic stress. Improving the initial cracking strength and ductility of shotcrete layer is one of the most important means to reduce the frequency of support structure repair, which will improve tunnel construction efficiency and ensure personnel safety. In this case, this paper introduced fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) mesh to replace the steel mesh as reinforcement to optimize the support effect of shotcrete lining. Both large-scale model test and mechanical test are conducted to compare the reinforcement effect between FRP and steel mesh. Research results indicate that replacing steel mesh with FRP can increase the ultimate deformation capacity of tunnel lining by more than four times. The parametric analysis results indicate that increasing the lining thickness, the diameter of the FRP bars and the mesh density have different degrees of effect on improving the stiffness and strength of tunnel lining. Basaltic magmas can provide important information about mantle source nature, tectonic settings and tectonic evolution for a given terrain. This paper reports geology, petrography and geochemistry of whole-rock major and trace elements and Nd−Sr isotopes for a suite of garnet amphibolites from southeastern Wulan (Ulan), Quanji Massif, northwestern China. The garnet amphibolites were likely generated from basaltic lavas, associated with both paragneisses and orthogneisses of the lower Delingha Group. The basaltic protolith of these amphibolites can be broadly constrained to be formed at ∼2.33 Ga in an extensional setting post-collision. The geochemistry of amphibolites shows subalkaline and highly evolved characteristics. They display high-Fe low-Ti characteristics, with TFeO of 13.1 wt.%–17.9 wt.% and TiO2 of 1.42 wt.%–3.09 wt.% (in most samples TiO2 ⩽2.5 wt.%). The chondrite-normalized REE patterns show enrichment of LREE and LILE and the primitive-mantle-normalized incompatible element patterns display negative P, Ti, Nb−Ta and Zr−Hf anomalies. The (87Sr/86Sr), values of 0.697 8–0.712 3 and εNd(t) values of −2.81–5.08 respond to depleted mantle model ages (TDM) of 2.33–3.30 Ga. These suggest that the precursor magmas of the protolith of the garnet amphibolites were probably derived from the Early Paleoproterozoic depleted sub-continental lithospheric mantle that had been metasomatized by subduction-induced fluids and melts. The precursor basaltic magmas were contaminated by the older crustal components during magma ascending. This post-collisional basaltic magmatic event at ∼2.33 Ga in Quanji Massif thus enhanced the subduction shutdown or slowdown tectonic regime both in NW China and coevally with those plate tectonics in some important domains worldwide during the Early Paleoproterozoic. Abstract The East China Sea Shelf Basin is one of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic basins located in the edge of eastern China continent whose formation and evolution are closely related to the subduction of the Pacific Plate. However, the underlying correlations between the tectonic evolution of the East China Sea Shelf Basin and the Pacific Plate subduction (65 Ma to present) remain poorly understood. In this paper, the basin is divided into western and eastern depression groups to further study its tectonic evolution. In combination with the characteristics of Pacific Plate subduction, this paper performs a coupling analysis of the basin evolution regarding its migration direction and evolution rate. The results of balanced section and deformation rate analyses reveal that the East China Sea Shelf Basin experienced different regional activities during the Cenozoic, which could be summarized as four geologic periods and three tectonic evolution stages. In this interpretation, it is recognized that tectonic activity occurred in the western depression group and then shifted to depocenters of the eastern group. In contrast, the Pacific Plate subducted westwards beneath the Eurasian Plate over the same geologic time span. Surprisingly, a slightly negative correlation between the intensity of the tectonic deformation of the East China Sea Shelf Basin and the subduction rate of the Pacific Plate is demonstrated when the subduction rate is no more than 75 mm/a. However, the basin deformation intensity increases with the plate subduction rate after 75 mm/a. The results of this work have implications for explaining the major role that the subduction of the Pacific Plate played in the formation and evolution of the eastern China basins. Northeast (NE) China is characterized by large areas of Mesozoic and Paleozoic granitoids, whereas Cenozoic granitoids are scarce. This paper reports LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages and whole-rock geochemical data for late Paleocene-early Eocene granitoids from the Jiamusi Massif, NE China, in order to determine their petrogenesis and tectonic implications. Geochronological data indicate that the granodiorite and dioritic porphyry from the Wudingshan pluton formed at 51.5 ± 0.3 Ma and 56.3 ± 0.8 Ma, respectively. The biotite-quartz diorite, biotite granodiorite, and dioritic porphyry have high SiO2 (68.38-70.06 wt.%), Al2O3 (15.34-15.79 wt.%), and Na2O (3.96-4.49 wt.%) contents, low MgO contents (1.10-1.26 wt.%), A/CNK ratios of 0.99-1.11, and are classified as medium- to high-K calc-alkaline and weakly peraluminous I-type granitoids. They are enriched in LREEs and LILEs, and depleted in HFSEs, with Nb/Ta ratios of 10.4-15.0. Moreover, they have negative Nb-Ta-Ti anomalies, indicating that they were derived from continental crust. Combining with the previously published isotopic data and regional geological results, we suggest that the late Paleocene-early Eocene granitoids (56-52 Ma) were probably derived from partial melting of juvenile lower crust, and formed in an active continental margin setting, possibly related to subduction slab rollback of the Paleo-Pacific Plate. The Katebasu gold (Au)–copper (Cu) deposit is one of the extra large‐scale Au–Cu deposits discovered in the western Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang in the recent years. The geological characteristics of the deposit have not been systematically studied and summarized, and there is considerable debate about the deposit type and metallogenic epoch. In this paper, we studied the Katebasu Au–Cu deposit orebody production characteristics, ore mineral composition, structural tectonic, surrounding rock alteration, and metallogenic phases. We identified the deposit types, presented a new discussion on the metallogenic epoch combined with the study of garnet Sm–Nd chronology, and indicate that the deposit type is a skarn type–fracture zone alteration rock type. The skarn‐type Cu–Au deposit is mainly distributed in the fault fracture zone and skarn in the contact zone between the rock mass and marble strata. The fracture zone alteration‐type Au–Cu deposit is mainly distributed in the monzonite granite fracture zone. The mining area has two phases of metallogenesis, which are related to monzonite granite and diorite dykes, respectively, and have a certain degree of superposition in space. Volcanic rocks in the Bangxi-Chenxing tectonic zone provide important carries for better understanding the Late Paleozoic tectonic evolution in Hainan and its temporal-spatial pattern of the eastern Paleotethyan evolution. This paper presents a set of new geochronological and geochemical data on the andesitic and dacitic rocks along the Bangxi-Chenxing tectonic zone in central Hainan. The representative andesitic and dacitic samples yield similar zircon U-Pb ages of 353±3 and 351±7 Ma, respectively, being of Early Carboniferous origin. These volcanic rocks are characterized by low TiO2 and high Al2O3 contents and are enriched in LILEs and LREEs but depletion in HFSEs, along with negative εNd(t) values of -1.4- -4.7 and high 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios of 0.707 2-0.710 1. Geochemical signatures suggest that the andesitic and dacitic samples might originate from a metasomatized wedge modified by the slab-derived component in a continental arc setting. In combination with the available data, it is proposed for the development of a Carboniferous continental arc in response to the eastern Paleotethyan evolution. The Bangxi-Chenxing tectonic zone might westerly link with the Jinshajiang-Ailaoshan-Song Ma suture zone, constituting an assemblage boundary between the South China and Indochina blocks. In this paper, we report new whole-rock geochemical and zircon U-Pb data for monzogranites in the NE Xing’an block. These data constrained the petrogenesis of C type (high Sr/Y) adakitic rocks and showed the spatial extent of the influence of the Mongol-Okhostsk ocean tectonic regime and the collision between the Jiamusi Massif and Songliao Terrane. New zircon laser-ablation inductivity coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb data indicated that the monzogranites in the studied area were emplaced in the Early Jurassic (~180 Ma). These rocks were characterized by unusally high SiO2 (≥67.49), and Sr (461-759 ppm), but strikingly low Y (4.63-8.06 ppm) and HREE (∑HREE = 3.83-6.49 ppm, Yb = 0.5-0.77 ppm) contents, with therefore high Sr/Y (67.2-119) and (La/Yb)N (29.7-41.5) ratios, showing the geochemical characteristics of C type adakitic granite. The data displayed negligible Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.77-1.08), LREE-enriched and pronounced negative Nb and Ta anomalies. The C-type adakites in the studied area were most likely derived from the partial melting of a thickened lower continental curst. The magma source is most likely dominated by amphibolites and garnet amphibolites. In combination with previously-reported data from igneous rocks from the Mesozoic in NE China, we conclude that the Xing’an block was influenced by the Mongol-Okhotsk subduction tectonic system, and experiences compressive settings from the amalgamation of the Jiamusi block in the east of the CAOB. The North China Craton (NCC) witnessed Mesozoic vigorous tectono-thermal activities and transition in the nature of deep lithosphere. These processes took place in three periods: (1) Late Paleozoic to Early Jurassic (∼170 Ma); (2) Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160-140 Ma); (3) Early Cretaceous to Cenozoic (140 Ma to present). The last two stages saw the lithospheric mantle replacement and coupled basin-mountain response within the North China Craton due to subduction and retreating of the Paleo-Pacific plate, and is the emphasis in this paper. In the first period, the subduction and closure of the Paleo- Asian Ocean triggered the back-arc extension, syn-collisional compression and then post-collisional extension accompanied by ubiquitous magmatism along the northern margin of the NCC. Similar processes happened in the southern margin of the craton as the subduction of the Paleo-Tethys ocean and collision with the South China Block. These processes had caused the chemical modification and mechanical destruction of the cratonic margins. The margins could serve as conduits for the asthenosphere upwelling and had the priority for magmatism and deformation. The second period saw the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk ocean and the shear deformation and magmatism induced by the drifting of the Paleo-Pacific slab. The former led to two pulse of N-S trending compression (Episodes A and B of the Yanshan Movement) and thus the pre-existing continental marginal basins were disintegrated into sporadically basin and range province by the Mesozoic magmatic plutons and NE-SW trending faults. With the anticlockwise rotation of the Paleo-Pacific moving direction, the subduction-related magmatism migrated into the inner part of the craton and the Tanlu fault became normal fault from a sinistral one. The NCC thus turned into a back-arc extension setting at the end of this period. In the third period, the refractory subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) was firstly remarkably eroded and thinned by the subduction-induced asthenospheric upwelling, especially those beneath the weak zones (i.e., cratonic margins and the lithospheric Tanlu fault zone). Then a slightly lithospheric thickening occurred when the upwelled asthenosphere got cool and transformed to be lithospheric mantle accreted (∼125 Ma) beneath the thinned SCLM. Besides, the magmatism continuously moved southeastward and the extensional deformations preferentially developed in weak zones, which include the Early Cenozoic normal fault transformed from the Jurassic thrust in the Trans-North Orogenic Belt, the crustal detachment and the subsidence of Bohai basin caused by the continuous normal strike slip of the Tanlu fault, the Cenozoic graben basins originated from the fault depression in the Trans-North Orogenic Belt, the Bohai Basin and the Sulu Orogenic belt. With small block size, inner lithospheric weak zones and the surrounding subductions/collisions, the Mesozoic NCC was characterized by (1) lithospheric thinning and crustal detachment triggered by the subduction-induced asthenospheric upwelling. Local crustal contraction and orogenesis appeared in the Trans-North Orogenic Belt coupled with the crustal detachment; (2) then upwelled asthenosphere got cool to be newly-accreted lithospheric mantle and crustal grabens and basin subsidence happened, as a result of the subduction zone retreating. Therefore, the subduction and retreating of the western Pacific plate is the outside dynamics which resulted in mantle replacement and coupled basin-mountain respond within the North China Craton. We consider that the Mesozoic decratonization of the North China Craton, or the Yanshan Movement, is a comprehensive consequence of complex geological processes proceeding surrounding and within craton, involving both the deep lithospheric mantle and shallow continental crust. The geological characteristics of ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic belts formed by deep subduction of oceanic crust are summarized in this paper. Oceanic-type UHP metamorphic belt Is characterized by its protolithic assemblage of typical oceanic crust, the peak metamorphic temperature <60°C, P-T path undergoing blueschist facies during prograde and retrograde metamorphic evolution, respectively, with low geothermal gradient of cold subduction. The further study of oceanic-type UHP metamorphic belt is very significant for constructing metamorphic reaction series of cold subduction zone, for understanding how aqueous fluids were transported into deep mantle and for classifying the types of UHP metamorphism in cold subduction zone. The uplift and exhumation mechanism of oceanic UHP metamorphic rocks is one of the most challenging problems in the study of UHP metamorphism, which is very important for understanding the geodynamic mechanism of solid Earth. As a traveler subducted into the mantle depth and then uplifted to the surface, oceanic-type UHP metamorphic belts witness the bulk process from the subduction to exhumation and is an ideal target to study the geochemical behavior and cycling of elements in subduction zones. The tectonic evolution of one convergent orogenic belt can be usually divided into two stages of oceanic subduction and followed continental subduction and collision, and the two best-established examples of orogenic belts are Alps and Himalaya. Therefore, the study of oceanic-type UHP metamorphic belt is the frontier of the current plate tectonic theory. As two case studies, the current status and existing problems of oceanic-type UHP metamorphic belts in Southwest Tianshan and North Qaidam, NW China, are reviewed in this paper. This paper presents results of recent studies on distribution and category of landslides in one section of the Sichuan–Tibet Highway, adjacent to the northern side of the Yarlu Tsangpo Grand Canyon, Tibet, Southwestern China. In the tectonic setting predominated by compression and strike-slipping, active faults are dominant and result in the genesis of the great alpine relief together with fluvial incision and unloading. In this section, with a distance of about 290 km between Ranwu and Lulang, 34 landslides occurred. Among them, the 12 large and super-large landslides comprise the most dangerous part of the highway system to road users over the past 50 years. The landslides usually occurred in slopes comprised of moraine with a large thickness, fluvio-pluvial and lacustrine deposits and fractured rocks. Based on the examination of the physical geography, structural geology, Quaternary geology, stratigraphy and petrography, this paper presents the temporal-spatial distribution of landslides along the section and classification of them into three types with respect to mechanism and composites of landslides. Each of the three types is presented by distinctive case examples. Type 1 is Yigong Landslide; type 2 includes Dongjiu Landslide group, 102 Landslide group, Suotong Landslide group, Songzong Landslide; and the type 3 is Layue Landslide. A binary landslide, which is seldom seen in nature and which occurred in the outlet of one creek under the integrative function of fluvial incision and road cut, is also presented. These are distributed in different parts of the area with characterized structural geology, topography and composites (gneiss and Quaternary deposits) with accumulative quantity between Suotong and Dongjiu. The most occurred with frequent and rapid translation, shallow shearing planes, various influential factors and unique triggering factors, and a variable period of reoccurrence with a tendency of increasing magnitude. In this region, six influential factors greatly contribute to their occurrence: (a) intensive neotectonic movements, (b) ongoing alpine canyon relief, (c) earthquakes, (d) heavy precipitation, (e) stream erosion, and (f) human activities, to a certain extent. Mostly, the latter four factors play major roles in triggering landslide occurrence. The earthquake causes the rock and soil to fracture and deform, and tends to be unstable, or cause earth-induced landslides. The heavy rainfall in monsoon seasons which saturates the soil and lower the shearing strength is mostly responsible for the occurrence of landslides. The stream erosion disturbs slope toes causing progressive failure. Road construction and deforestation decrease the natural slope stability. The Palaeo-Asian Ocean (PAO) was located between Siberia and the North China Craton (NCC). The time of its closure, as well as the crustal architecture of the surrounding region, are still uncertain. In this paper, we address these problems using LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages of zircon grains in three magmatic rocks and three river sand samples of the Guyang area at the northern margin of the NCC. The magmatic rocks yield early Carboniferous crystallization ages of 340.3 ± 7.5 Ma, 331.7 ± 2.3 Ma and 341.1 ± 1.9 Ma for the main granitic pluton, a granodiorite dyke and a diorite enclave, respectively. They were the product of subduction of the PAO underneath the NCC. The detrital zircon U-Pb ages in the river sand samples are dominated by two groups at 2550-2400 and 290-260 Ma, with subordinate groups at 2700-2600, 2000-1800 and 320-300 Ma, dispersed Early Palaeoproterozoic grains and a minor but important group of Cretaceous grains in sands of the Aibugai River. These results, combined with previous geochronological data, permit a re-assessment of the tectonic evolution of the northern margin of the NCC. The events at ~2.5 Ga reflect major crustal reworking and cratonization of the northern margin of the NCC, which then became a stable platform lasting until the Carboniferous. The period between 2.0 and 1.8 Ga was characterized by major collisions related to formation of the Khondalite Belt and the Trans-North China Orogen. In the Carboniferous, subduction of the PAO underneath the northern margin of the NCC developed a zoned distribution of magmatic rocks. The PAO is now constrained to have closed in the Early Permian by the collision of the NCC and Siberia. This paper summarizes the geochronological, geochemical and zircon Hf isotopic data for Mesozoic granitoids within the Erguna Massif, NE China, and discusses the spatial-temporal variation of zircon Hf isotopic compositions, with the aim of constraining the accretion and reworking processes of continental crust within the Erguna Massif, and shedding light on the crustal evolution of the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Based on the zircon U-Pb dating results, the Mesozoic granitic magmatisms within the Erguna Massif can be subdivided into five stages: Early-Middle Triassic (249-237 Ma), Late Triassic (229-201 Ma), Early-Middle Jurassic (199-171 Ma), Late Jurassic (155-149 Ma), and Early Cretaceous (145-125 Ma). The Triassic to Early-Middle Jurassic granitoids are mainly I-type granites and minor adakitic rocks, whereas the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous granitoids are mainly A-type granites. This change in magmatism is consistent with the southward subduction of the Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic plate and subsequent collision and crustal thickening, followed by post-collision extension. Zircon Hf isotopic data indicate that crustal accretion of the Erguna Massif occurred in the Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic. Zircon ε( t) values increase gradually over time, whereas two-stage model ( T ) ages decrease throughout the Mesozoic. The latter result indicates a change in the source of granitic magmas from the melting of ancient crust to more juvenile crust. Zircon ε( t) values also exhibit spatial variations, with values decreasing northwards, whereas T ages increase. This pattern suggests that, moving from south to north, there is an increasing component of ancient crustal material within the lower continental crust of the Erguna Massif. Even if at the same latitude, the zircon Hf isotopic compositions are also inconsistent. These results reveal lateral and vertical heterogeneities in the lower continental crust of the Erguna Massif during the Mesozoic, which we use as the basis of a structural and tectonic model for this region. The East China Sea Shelf Basin lies between the Pacific Subduction and Indian-Eurasian Collision tectonic domains and records Cenozoic tectonic inversion, especially in the Xihu Sag. To improve the understanding of the evolution and mechanism of tectonic inversion, this paper employs analogue modelling to reproduce the evolutionary process. Combined with the structural analysis of seismic profile, this paper determines the pattern of basement-involved faults. Simulation results show that under the transtension, two subsidence centers developed and a number of normal faults assembled in two flower structures. When the stress field turned into transpression, the geometry and deformation of inversion basin inherited the previous transtensional basin and pre-existing faults, respectively. The geometry and fault patterns in models are well consistent with those observed in the Xihu Sag, which indicates the plausibility of similar deformation controls. The formation of the tectonic inversion is related to the variation in stress field caused by the changes in the rates and directions of the subduction of the Pacific Plate and the collision of the Indian Plate with Eurasian Plate. In South China, the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks were welded together along the Jiangnan Fold Belt during Neoproterozoic time (∼830 Ma). Large-scale mineralization in these two blocks occurred from Proterozoic to Cenozoic, making the region one of the most important polymetallic metallogenic provinces in the world. Of particular importance are world-class deposits of iron-oxide copper gold (IOCG), sediment-hosted Mn-P-Al-(Ni, Mo, PGE), syenite-carbonatite-related REE, felsic intrusion-related Sn-W-Mo-Cu-Fe-Pb-Zn, mafic intrusion-related V-Ti-Fe and Cu-Ni-PGE and low-temperature hydrothermal Pb, Zn, Au, and Sb ( Fig. 1 ). In addition, the Ta-Nb, Hg, As, Tl and U deposits in South China are among the world largest of these kinds. Because of these deposits, South China has been a focus of researches for many years. Publications before 2005 were mostly restricted in Chinese. In the past decade, some case studies on some world-class deposits in South China are available in international journals. These recent studies have advanced our understanding of their mode of formation. However, some important issues regarding the timing, tectonic setting and mechanisms of metal concentration still remain poorly understood. This special issue brings together some of the latest information on these topics, including major review papers on specific types of mineralization and several papers dealing with some specific deposits in the region. We anticipate that this issue will generate more interests in the studies of mineral deposits in South China. In this introduction, we outline the tectonic framework and associated deposits. The Duolong area is the most important part of the Western Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone porphyry Cu(Au) metallogenic belt, in Tibet, China. Here new detailed data are presented from LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb, whole-rock geochemical, and in-situ zircon Hf isotope analyses for igneous rocks in the large Naruo deposit (2.51 Mt of Cu and 82 t of Au) which is located ∼2 km NE of the Duolong (Duobuza and Bolong) super-large gold-rich porphyry copper deposit. We integrated our results with previous research of other porphyry deposits in the Duolong area and have identified the timing, geodynamic setting, and petrogenesis of the mineralization-associated magmatic events. Based on the measurements, the Duolong area porphyry Cu(Au) deposit formations are associated with Early Cretaceous intermediate-felsic magmatism, which is consistent with U-Pb zircon ages of 120 Ma. All the main intrusive rocks in the ore-concentrated area have similar lithogeochemical characteristics; they show a relative enrichment in both light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs: Rb, Ba, K, etc.) and relative depletion in both heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and high field strength elements (HFSEs: Nb, Ta, Zr, Hf, etc.). Moreover, the granite porphyry shows positive εHf( t) values between 1.38-7.37 suggesting that magmas were potentially derived from the partial melting of a depleted mantle wedge that had been metasomatized by subducted slab-derived fluids or melts. This paper points out that the formation of the porphyry-epithermal Cu(Au) deposit in the Duolong area was dominated by northward subduction of the Bangongco Tethys Plate beneath the Qiangtang block in the Early Cretaceous (124-114 Ma), when the subducted oceanic crust reached 50-70 km underground and generated different degrees of phase transformation, which lead to a melt produced by dehydration of amphibole minerals, a metasomatized mantle wedge, and induced mantle partial melting that produced the magma. Those deposits occurred in a continental arc tectonic setting, which is similar to the continental margin arc environment of the ocean-continent subduction setting of the Andes metallogenic belt in South America. The late Palaeoproterozoic to early Mesoproterozoic igneous rocks of southwestern China are characterized by a number of mafic intrusions and dykes. However, the origin and tectonic implications of these mafic intrusions and dykes remain unclear. The Hekou mafic intrusion, intruding into the Hekou Group in the Hekou area, SW China, is the biggest and most representative one. The intrusion is mainly composed of coarse-grained in the central zone (CZ) and medium- to fine-grained gabbroic rocks in the outer zone (OZ). Cameca secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) U–Pb zircon ages, and geochemical and Nd isotopic results for the intrusion are reported in this paper. SIMS U–Pb zircon ages indicate that the gabbroic rocks from the CZ and OZ were emplaced at 1735±6.5 Ma and 1736±4.0 Ma, respectively. This suggests that the Hekou intrusion originated from c. 1.7 Ga mafic magmatism in the southwestern Yangtze Block. The coarse-grained rocks in the CZ of the intrusion show fairly homogeneous major- and trace-element compositions. In contrast, the medium- to fine-grained rocks from the OZ display slightly evolved compositions, with relatively lower Mg nos, MgO, Al2O3, Cr and Ni contents, and higher SiO2, CaO and Zr concentrations than those of the rocks from the CZ. Although the gabbroic rocks of the intrusion have low total rare earth element (REE) contents (REE = 29.3–40.2 ppm) with slightly light REE (LREE)-enriched and heavy REE (HREE)-depleted patterns, they exhibit distinct trace-element and Nd isotopic features. The rocks from the CZ are characterized by slightly LREE-enriched and ‘convex upwards’ incompatible trace-element patterns with significant Th depletion and insignificant Nb and Ta depletion relative to La. However, the rocks from the OZ have relatively flatter REE patterns than those of the rocks from the CZ. In addition, the rocks from the OZ are slightly enriched in Th and depleted in Nb and Ta relative to La. The εNd(T) values of the CZ and the OZ rocks are +0.70 to +2.3 and −0.30 to +0.24, respectively. The parental magma for the Hekou gabbroic intrusion exhibits affinity with a subalkaline basaltic magma, which was possibly generated by relatively high degrees of partial melting of a slightly depleted asthenospheric mantle source. Their geochemical and isotopic variations were due to slight crystal fractionation with varying degrees of crustal contamination. The Hekou intrusion was therefore supposed to form in an anorogenic extensional environment. It is further suggested that c. 1.7 Ga is an important onset timing of widespread anorogenic magmatism in the southwestern Yangtze Block. We interpret the late Palaeoproterozoic gabbroic intrusion to represent anorogenic mafic magmatism, which was most likely related to the break-up of the Columbia supercontinent. Sichuan Basin is a typical superimposed basin, which experienced multi-phase tectonic movements, meanwhile Sinian-Cambrian underwent complex hydrocarbon accumulation processes, causing exploration difficulties in the past 60 years. Based on the microscopic evidence of fluid inclusions, combined with basin-modelling, this paper determines stages and time of hydrocarbon accumulation, reconstructs evolution of formation pressure and dynamic processes of hydrocarbon accumulation in Sinian Dengying Formation-Cambrian Longwangmiao Formation of Gaoshiti-Moxi structure. Three stages of inclusions are detected, including a stage of yellow-yellowgreen fluorescent oil inclusions, a stage of blue fluorescent oil-gas inclusions and a stage of non-fluorescent gas inclusions, reflecting the study area has experienced a series of complex hydrocarbon accumulation processes, such as formation of paleo-oil reservoirs, cracking of crude oil, formation of paleo-gas reservoirs and adjustment to present gas reservoirs, which occurred during 219-188, 192-146 and 168-0 Ma respectively. During the period of crude oil cracking, Dengying Formation-Longwangmiao Formation showed weak overpressure to overpressure characteristics, then after adjustment of paleo-gas reservoirs to present gas reservoirs, the pressure in Dengying Formation changed into overpressure but finally reduced to normal pressure system. However, due to excellent preservation conditions, the overpressure strength in Longwangmiao Formation only slightly decreased and was still kept to this day. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The East China Sea Shelf Basin (ECSSB), the Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB) and the Taixinan Basin (TXNB) in the northern continental margin of the South China Sea (SCS) are important oil- and gas-bearing basins on the Western Pacific Continental Margin. During the Paleocene to Late Miocene, their strata can be compared, and the lithofacies were continuous from the TXNB, via the Taixi Basin (TXB) to the ECSSB. The lithologies mainly consist of interbedded shale, sandstone and mudstone layers. In addition, these basins have similar tectonic and sedimentation features. The three basins had similar marine-terrigenous facies in the Paleocene and marine-lacustrine-fluvial facies during the Eocene and Late Miocene. The basins experienced several coeval tectonic movements and episodes, and they developed a series of NE- and NNE-trending faults during the Paleocene and Eocene, which controlled the structure of the basins. During the Early Oligocene and Middle Miocene, they developed a series of NW- and WNW-trending strike-slip faults, reverse folds and flower-like strike-slip faults. However, there were obvious differences in sedimentary and tectonic evolution since the Late Miocene. The TXNB and TXB developed marine facies after the Late Miocene, while in the Quaternary, open marine facies replaced the Pliocene terrigenous facies in the ECSSB. Since the Late Miocene, the south of the ECSSB developed into a subsidence stage, and fault activity stopped. The TXB and TXNB developed some inverse structures and then developed into a thermal subsidence episode after the Dongsha Movement. Thus, this paper proposes that the ECSSB and the Cenozoic basins in the SCS were originally a unified basin and then subsequently separated into two basins as a result of the indentation of the Philippine Sea Plate (PSP) and the arc-continent collision between the Luzon Arc and the Eurasian Plate. This paper investigates the petrogenesis of the Xinxian granitic batholith and its tectonic implications for the Dabie orogen. Two Xinxian granites yield Early Cretaceous U/Pb ages of 122.7 ± 1.3 Ma and 123.6 ± 2.2 Ma. The granites are metaluminous differentiated I-type granites, with A/NKC ranging from 0.90 to 0.96. The chondrite-normalised REE patterns display significant LREE/HREE enrichments with moderate negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu = 0.30 ~ 0.85). The granites show enrichments in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs, e.g. Rb, K, Th and U) and depletions in Sr, Ba and high field strength elements (HFSEs, e.g. Nb, Ta and Ti). Inherited zircons of different age (Neoproterozoic, one Early Proterozoic, one Archean and two Triassic inherited metamorphic zircons) are identified. The Early Cretaceous magmatic zircons contain enriched Hf isotopes with ε ( t) values ranging from −26.9 to −18.7 (average = −22.5), more enriched than their probable alleged source, i.e. the Dabie Complex, represented by the Neoproterozoic and Triassic inherited zircons. Thus, the Archean and Early Proterozoic crustal materials may represent an enriched end member source for the parental magma of the Xinxian granites. Provenance analysis of the magmatic zircons in the North China and Yangtze blocks demonstrates that the Early Proterozoic inherited zircon in Xinxian has North China affinity. Thus, we proposed a multiple-sourced petrogenetic model for the Xinxian granitic batholith, which suggests that the batholith was formed by the remelting of a mixed crustal assemblage, including the Archean and Early Proterozoic crust of the North China Block, the Neoproterozoic crust of the Yangtze Block, as well as some Triassic collision-related ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks. The Qingdong area, located in Bohai bay basin, was suspected good exploration prospects. In order to study tectonic features and find out favourable petroleum prospects in the area, the gravity data at a scale of 1:50,000 were interpreted. This paper, through data processing and synthetic interpretation of the high-precision gravity data in the area, discusses characteristics of the gravity field and their geological implications, determines the fault system, analyses features of the main strata, divides structure units and predicts favourable petroleum zones. The results showed that the faults controlled the development of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic strata and the distribution of local structures in this area. The study revealed that the Qingtuozi uplift and the Kendong uplift in the north were formed in Mesozoic, and the Qingdong depression in the middle was the rift basin in Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Thicker strata in Mesozoic and Cenozoic developed in the Dongying depression and the Qingdong depression, so there is abundant hydrocarbon in these two depressions, and then the Guangligang rise-in-sag and the Qingdong rise-in-sag developed in the center in these two depressions are also favorable places for prospecting [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During Mesozoic to Cenozoic time, the large-scale tectono-magmatism had strongly modified the lithosphere beneath the southeastern continent of China, leaving the present-day lithosphere as a new one evolving from the ancient lithosphere that was largely removed and replaced. But this model proposed from geochemical and petrological research is urgently in need of support from seismic observational evidence. In this paper, based on the dataset recorded by the dense stations of two NE oriented broadband seismic profiles deployed in the coastal area of southeastern China (SE China), both P-wave (P-RF) and S-wave (S-RF) receiver functions were isolated. We identified Pls phase converted from the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary (LAB) in P-RFs of individual stations. Migrated Pls phase indicated a depth of 60-70 km for LAB. Inversions/ comparisons of P-RF ( Pls phase) and S-RF ( Slp phase) waveforms together with Ps and Sp imaging for the crust and upper mantle structure further confirmed this result. P-RF and S-RF migrated images exhibit that a flat LAB is positioned at the depth of 60-70 km spreading along the profile, whereas a distinct structural change of lithospheric base appears at the Min River estuary. Both Ps and PpPs migrated images of P-RFs present an abrupt Moho drop across the Min River fault from south to north, which is consistent with previous result obtained from deep seismic sounding. By taking into consideration other geological and geophysical features such as locally high anomalies of crustal Poisson's ratios and heat flow at the Min River estuary, we infer that the Min River fault penetrates down to the Moho and may, furthermore, interfere in the deeper lithospheric structure. The relative change of in-situ stress is an inevitable outcome of differential movement among the crust plates. Conversely, changes of in-situ stress can also lead to deformation and instability of crustal rock mass, trigger activity of faults, and induce earthquakes. Hence, monitoring real-time change of in-situ stress is of great significance. Piezomagnetic in-situ stress monitoring has good and longtime applications in large engineering constructions and geoscience study fields in China. In this paper, the new piezomagnetic in-situ stress monitoring system is introduced and it not only has overall improvements in measuring cell's structure and property, stressing and orienting way, but also enhances integration and intelligence of control and data transmission system, in general, which greatly promotes installing efficiency of measuring probe and quality of monitoring data. This paper also discusses the responses of new piezomagnetic system in large earthquake events of in-situ stress monitoring station at Qiaoqi of Baoxing and Wenxian of Gansu. The monitoring data reflect adjustments and changes of tectonic stress field at the southwestern segment of and the northern area near the Longmenshan fault zone, which shows that the new system has a good performance and application prospect in the geoscience field. Data of the Qiaoqi stress-monitoring station manifest that the Lushan Earthquake did not release stress of the southwestern segment of the Longmenshan fault zone adequately and there still probably exists seismic risk in this region in the future. Combined with absolute in-situ stress measurement, carrying out long-term in-situ stress monitoring in typical tectonic position of important regions is of great importance for researchers to assess and study regional crust stability. The present paper deals with a tectonic event of Late Ordovician age affecting three blocks of China, i.e. South China, North China and Tarim. In the North China and the Tarim platforms, as well as their marginal belts, there was a regional uplift during the early Katian Stage of the Ordovician. The uplift was indicated by the unconformities between the Ordovician successions and overlying late Paleozoic strata. New biostratigraphic studies of conodonts and graptolites from many sections at Longxian and Yaoxian, North China shows that the youngest Ordovician strata are of the early Katian age corresponding to graptolite Diplacanthograptus spiniferus Biozone. The same level has been recognized to represent the uppermost Ordovician in the platform area of Tarim, whereas in the marginal belt the top boundary of the Ordovician is slightly younger, corresponding to the graptolite Dicellograptus complanatus Biozone. Thus, the regional uplift in North China and Tarim is shown by the disconformity between the early Katian strata and Late Paleozoic strata, the onset coinciding with that of the Kwangsian Orogeny in South China. The designation Kwangsian Orogeny later fell into disuse and was replaced by the term Caledonian Orogeny. However, in terms of geographic location, tectonic nature, and the timing of activity, the Caledonian Orogeny differs significantly from the orogenic event in South China, and the continued use of this term in South China is inappropriate and misleading. This paper aims at exploring the tectonic characteristics of the South China Continent (SCC) and extracting the universal tectonic rules from these characteristics, to help enrich the plate tectonic theory and better understand the continental dynamic system. For this purpose, here we conduct a multi-disciplinary investigation and combine it with the previous studies to reassess the tectonics and evolution of SCC and propose that the tectonic framework of the continent comprises two blocks, three types of tectonic units, four deformation systems, and four evolutionary stages with distinctive mechanism and tectonic characteristics since the Neoproterozoic. The four evolutionary stages are: (1) The amalgamation and break-up of the Neoproterozoic plates, typically the intracontinental rifting. (2) The early Paleozoic and Mesozoic intracontinental orogeny confined by plate tectonics, forming two composite tectonic domains. (3) The parallel operation of the Yangtze cratonization and intracontinental orogeny, and multi-phase reactivation of the Yangtze craton. (4) The association and differentiation evolution of plate tectonics and intracontinental tectonics, and the dynamic characteristics under the Meso-Cenozoic modern global plate tectonic regime. Meso-Cenozoic extensional structures are important for understanding the tectonics of the Chinese Central Asia. This paper presents a systematic investigation on the Meso-Cenozoic extensional structures in the Northern Tarim Basin. Close interpretations of seismic data reveal that the Meso-Cenozoic extensional structures were widely developed in the Northern Tarim Basin. These extensional structures are regionally composed of many small normal faults, which usually group into left- or right-step en echelon and form several transtensional fault zones. Combinations of normal faults in profile become small graben-horst or staircase-like cross-sections. Based on the areal distribution, structural style, combination relationship, formation and evolution time, and formation mechanism of the extensional structures, we found that the Meso-Cenozoic extensional structures in Northern Tarim Basin can be classified into two conjugate normal fault systems, which were formed separately in Jurassic-Early Cretaceous and Late Cretaceous-Neogene. The former is likely associated with the stress relaxation after a collisional orogeny accompanied with a certain degree of anticlockwise rotation of the Tarim block relative to the South Tianshan; the latter is possibly induced by the east by south tectonic escape of the Tarim block with a certain degree of clockwise rotation relative to the South Tianshan triggered by the far-field effect of the Himalayan orogeny. To study the thinning of cratonic lithosphere in North China has been the hot subject of basic research in the fields of solid earth science in China. This paper presents an overview on the formation and evolution of continental crust, and outlines the mechanisms of forming the lithospheric mantle. It is suggested that the thinning of cratonic lithosphere principally proceeds in two ways, one by subduction erosion (e.g., North China), and the other by a combination of subduction erosion and underplating degistion (e.g., Yangtze). Much attention has been paid in the last two decades to the physical and chemical processes as well as temporal-spatial variations of the lithospheric mantle beneath the North China Craton. In order to provide insights into the geodynamics of this variation, it is necessary to thoroughly study the state and structure of the lithospheric crust and mantle of the North China Craton and its adjacent regions as an integrated unit. Based on the velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle constrained from seismological studies, this paper presents various available geophysical results regarding the lithosphere thickness, the nature of crust-mantle boundary, the upper mantle structure and deformation characteristics as well as their tectonic features and evolution systematics. Combined with the obtained data from petrology and geochemistry, a mantle flow model is proposed for the tectonic evolution of the North China Craton during the Mesozoic-Cenozoic. We suggest that subduction of the Pacific plate made the mantle underneath the eastern Asian continent unstable and able to flow faster. Such a regional mantle flow system would cause an elevation of melt/fluid content in the upper mantle of the North China Craton and the lithospheric softening, which, subsequently resulted in destruction of the North China Craton in different ways of delamination and thermal erosion in Yanshan, Taihang Mountains and the Tan-Lu Fault zone. Multiple lines of evidence recorded in the crust of the North China Craton, such as the amalgamation of the Archean eastern and western blocks, the subduction of Paleo- oceanic crust and Paleo-continental residue, indicate that the Earth in the Paleoproterozoic had already evolved into the plate tectonic system similar to the present plate tectonics. The study of continental deep-subduction has been one of the forefront and core subjects to advance the plate tectonics theory in the twenty-first century. The Dabie-Sulu orogenic belt in China crops out the largest lithotectonic unit containing ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks in the world. Much of our understanding of the world's most enigmatic processes in continental deep-subduction zones has been deduced from various records in the Dabie-Sulu rocks. By taking these rocks as the natural laboratory, earth scientists have made seminal contributions to understanding of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism and continental collision. This paper outlines twelve aspects of outstanding progress, including spatial distribution of the UHP metamorphic rocks, timing of the UHP metamorphism, time- scale of the UHP metamorphism, the protolith nature of deeply subducted continental crust, subduction erosion and crustal detachment during continental collision, the possible depths of continental subduction, fluid activity in the continental deep-subduction zone, partial melting during continental collision, element mobility in continental deep-subduction zone, recycling of subducted continental crust, geodynamic mechanism of postcollisional magmatism, and lithospheric architecture of collision orogen. The evaluation of crustal stability in the lower Yellow River region (LYR) is vital to the engineering project of the Yellow River embankment and construction of the Huang-Huai-Hai plain. From three aspects of tectonic stability, surface stability and medium stability, this paper analyzes in detail the factors such as tectonic activity, tectonic stress, exogenic geologic disasters and ground material composition which affect crustal stability in the study area and the spatial distributions of subordinate degree of the evaluation factors. It then constructs the crustal stability evaluation model of fuzzy mathematics based on GIS by using AHP to find out the interrelations among the various factors, comprehensive evaluation of fuzzy mathematics and the functions of spatial overlay and spatial database of ArcGIS. Based upon this the crustal stability evaluation is carried out, the results show that the areas of stable and instable regions are basically the same, being 48.72% and 51.28% respectively. The area of moderate stable region takes a dominant position, being about 70.58%. The crust instable region presents zonal distribution and under the control of tectonic faulted belt. But the region where the LYR runs across is mostly instable with a total length of the river being 568.345 km, or 78.93% of all. This paper deals with the various tectonic units in the Chinese Eastern Tianshan orogenic collage in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, and discusses the Paleozoic geological history of the several periods of accretion and collision of archipelago systems lying between the Tarim and southern Angaran continental margins. The Late Ordovician-Silurian to Early Devonian Eastern Tianshan archipelago was characterized by (a) the Harlik-Dananhu subduction system with a S-dipping polarity in the north; (b) a southerly N-dipping subduction system beneath the Central Tianshan arc in the middle; and (c) the South Tianshan ocean against Tarim in the south. During the Devonian to Early Carboniferous, N-dipping subduction led to the Harlik-Dananhu arc and the Kanggurtag foreare basin/accretionary complex. In the Early to Mid-Carboniferous, the magmatic front associated with the N-dipping subduction beneath the Dananhu-Harlik arc migrated southwards, forming the Yamansu arc constructed upon the Kanggurtag accretionary forearc. By the Late Carboniferous the Dananhu-Harlik arc was attached northwards to the Angaran margin, resulting in lateral enlargement of the Angaran continent. In the latest Carboniferous to Early Permian a multiple soft collision left wide suture zones in the south that include the ophiolite-strewn Aqikkuduk-Shaquanzi and Kumishi accretion-collision complexes, which were stitched by Early Permian post-collisional plutons. By re-defining and re-interpreting the various tectonic terranes, this paper presents a new, improved model for the Paleozoic evolution of this part of Central Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the paleogeography and plate tectonics of the Silurian using five global and twelve regional scale maps. These maps illustrate the distribution of major tectonic elements such as subduction zones, spreading centres, transform faults and main volcanic areas 435 and 425 Ma ago. The regional maps show the global paleogeographic configuration combined with palaeoenvironmental and palaeolithofacies distribution. The paleogeographic analysis shows that the continents of Gondwana, Laurentia, Laurussia, Siberia, South China and North China were separated by the Iapetus, Rheic, Paleoasian (Prototethys), Paleotethys, Panthalassa and Mongol-Okhotsk oceans. Spreading of the Rheic and Paleotethys oceans constituted the main Silurian extensional event. The Scythian-Turan-South Kazakhstan-Junggar-Tarim-North China chain of continents moved north-westwards, and this led to a gradual narrowing of the Paleoasian Ocean. The Caledonian-Scandian orogeny that resulted from the collision of Baltica, Avalonia and Laurentia constituted the main convergent event during Silurian times. Megacrystic zircons have recently been found in alluvial deposits in the Huadian area of northeastern China. However, studies have rarely been conducted on these zircons. In this article, we present systematic in situ trace element, U-Pb age and Hf isotope data regarding these Huadian zircons, with the aim of investigating their source characteristics and provenance. The studied zircons, with a diameter of 0.7–1.2 cm, are dominantly irregular in shape and have a rounded termination, with a color ranging from near-colorless to reddish brown to maroon. The zircons show oscillatory zoning in CL images, with a Th/U value of 0.18–1.27, which is consistent with the typical features of magmatic zircons. The positive εHf(t) value of Huadian zircons (4.8–9.2) further indicates the presence of precipitation from the mantle-derived melt, with limited contamination of the crustal components. The obtained weighted mean 206Pb/238U age for these zircons is 17.9 ± 0.12 Ma, which is slightly older than the eruptional ages of the associated alkali basalts (from 17.6 ± 1.09 Ma to 17.8 ± 0.69 Ma), implying a short residence time in the mantle before entrainment. Huadian zircons incorporate a wide range of trace elements, including ΣREE (117–2790 ppm), Hf (4902–11856 ppm) and Y (145–3645 ppm) contents, generating mixed-source protolith assignments. As is suggested by the moderate variations seen in the Hf isotopes, we propose that the source melts of Huadian zircons are complex in nature, which is likely the result of the chemical heterogeneity of the upper mantle. The Longyao ground fissure (LGF) is the longest and most active among more than 1000 ground fissures on the North China Plain. There have been many studies on the formation mechanism of the LGF, due to its scientific importance and its potential for damage to the environment. These studies have been based on both regional tectonic analysis and numerical simulations. In order to provide a better understanding of the formation mechanism, the deformation of the crack and its surrounding environment should be taken into consideration. In this paper, PS-InSAR technology was employed to assess the ground deformation of LGF and its surrounding area, using L-band ALOS-1 PALSAR images from 2007 to 2011. The characteristics of ground deformation, relationships between fissure activity and surrounding faults and groundwater exploitation were analyzed. This study shows that the north side of Longyao fault (LF) is uplifting while the south side is subsiding. This provides the tectonic conditions responsible for the activity of the ground fissure. Local groundwater exploitation also plays an important role in the development of ground fissures. The tectonic setting of the Jiamusi–Khanka Massif in the eastern sector of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) in NE China is still highly controversial. This review considers all existing data to evaluate the origin of the Jiamusi–Khanka Massif. The Precambrian basement in the Jiamusi–Khanka Massif is dominated by the Neoproterozoic orthogneisses (898–891 and 757–751 Ma), the Mashan Complex (peak metamorphism at 530–500 Ma), and syntectonically deformed early Palaeozoic granitoids (530–484 Ma) related to the metamorphism of the Mashan Complex. The Mashan Complex reveals a clockwise orogen-style P–T path with peak conditions of 850–870°C/8–9 kbar followed by isothermal decompression. It was intruded by syn- (530–500 Ma) and post-tectonic (490–476 Ma) granitic rocks. The Jiamusi–Khanka Massif cannot be directly derived from the North China, South China, or Tarim cratons. Instead, it may have originated in the Siberian Craton and formed once part of the Altai-Sayan and Baikal orogens at ~500 Ma. For the Jiamusi Massif, we developed a plate tectonic model, and relate the final granulite facies metamorphism to slab break-off after consumption of a branch of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean. The eastern margin of the Xing’an–Mongolian Orogenic Belt is characterised by widespread Phanerozoic granitic magmatism, some of which is closely related to significant ore mineralisation. This paper presents new geochronological, petrogenetic, and tectonic data for selected intrusions. Zircon U–Pb geochronology for five granitoid plutons indicates they were emplaced during the middle–late Permian (264–255 Ma) and Cretaceous (106–94 Ma), and thus granitic magmatism occurred throughout the Phanerozoic, Permian (268–252 Ma), Early–Middle Triassic (248–240 Ma), Early Jurassic (183 Ma), and Cretaceous (112–94 Ma). The Permian granitoids consist of monzogranite, granodiorite, tonalite, and quartz diorite, characterised by enrichment in Na 2 O (3.60–4.72 wt.%), depletion in K 2 O (0.97–2.66 wt.%), and a negative correlation between P 2 O 5 and SiO 2 . Together with the presence of hornblende, these geochemical features are indicative of an I-type affinity. The Permian granitic magmatism is associated with quartz-vein-type tungsten deposits (252 Ma; unpublished Sm–Nd isochron age), which formed in an active continental margin setting related to subduction of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean. The Cretaceous quartz diorites have an adakitic affinity, having relatively high Sr (374–502 ppm), low Yb (0.51–0.67 ppm) and Y (8.7–10.7 ppm), and high Sr/Y (39.4–46.8) and (La/Yb) N values (16.2–34.7), suggesting that they were related to the partial melting of subducted oceanic crust. In addition, they are associated with porphyry Au–Cu deposits. We conclude that the Cretaceous granitic rocks and associated porphyry Au–Cu mineralisation occurred in an extensional tectonic setting related to the subduction of the Palaeo-Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. In addition, the large-scale Early–Middle Triassic syn-collisional granite belt at the eastern margin of the Xing’an–Mongolian Orogenic Belt extends from the middle of Jilin Province to the Wangqing–Hunchun region, constraining the timing of the final collision between the North China Craton and the Jiamusi–Khanka Massif, and suggesting that the Xra Moron River–Changchun Suture likely extends eastward into the eastern Hunchun region. Lithospheric subduction prior to the assembly of the South China and North China blocks is traditionally considered to be directed northward. However, some critical geological and geochemical data cannot be reconciled with this northward subduction. This paper presents new lines of evidence against the traditional models and proposes a new and revolutionary tectonic model to explain the distribution and exhumation of high pressure (HP)-ultrahigh pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks of the Dabie-Sulu Belt. We emphasize the following: 1) The Triassic tectonic environment of the southern margin of the North China Block was passive, not active, based on the stratigraphy; 2) In the southern margin of the North China Block no arc magmatism was recorded. 3) Many Paleoproterozoic slices of Jiaobei affinity of the Jiao-Liao-Ji Belt in the North China Block were located in the Triassic Sulu Orogen. 4) Many 1.85 Ga metamorphic zircons are preserved in the Dabie-Sulu high pressure-ultra-high pressure (HP-UHP) metamorphic rocks. 5) The geometric asymmetry of many structural patterns in the HP-UHP slices indicates top-to-the northwest thrusting during the exhumation of HP-UHP slices. 6) Blueschists occur in the south of the UHP eclogite slices. 7) In the eastern segment of the North Qinling Orogen, no components with an affinity of the South China Block have been found. Along the Shangdan Suture of the Qinling Orogen has been recorded an apparent northward subduction. We consider that the suture is just a lateral subduction zone rather than a major collisional zone. Along the Shangdan Suture, the rarity of I-type plutonism can be attributed to a transform-type continental margin. The Bureya-Jiamusi-Khanka Block has an affinity to the South China Block based on its similarity regarding the Paleozoic history of deformation and Triassic blueschist metamorphic facies metamorphism. The Bureya-Jiamusi-Khanka Block could be the northern extension of the Dabie-Sulu Belt, and this gigantic belt could be interpreted as an orocline related to the southeastward subduction of the North China Block beneath the Greater South China Block. Available-geological study shows that the Fushan iron mineralization was mainly controlled by the tectonic deformation, but the roles of both the stretching activity and the squeezing activity in the ore-forming processes are still unclear and under debate. Using coupled structural deformation, heat transfer and pore-fluid flow models to simulate the effect of tectonism on the formation of the Fushan iron deposit can enhance our understanding of the ore-forming processes in the Fushan iron ore district. The three-dimensional numerical model of the Fushan iron deposit was established to simulate the coupled structural deformation, heat transfer and pore-fluid flow. In particular, the finite difference method is used in this paper to simulate the structural deformation, which can affect the formation of the metallogenic region. The simulation results of the Fushan iron deposit indicated that the Fushan iron deposit was formed mainly by compressive squeezing deformation rather than extensional stretching deformation. Early Paleozoic black organic sediments and bentonites occur widely in the craton basin within the Yangtze block and are generally believed to be genetically related to a specific tectonic setting on the cratonic boundary. However, the intimate relationship between their origins and the dynamic mechanisms are unclear, as exemplified by the genesis of the black shale series and bentonites from the Wufeng Formation during the Ordovician–Silurian transition (OST). In order to reveal the relationship between the Wufeng Formation and the convergence of the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks (i.e., the intracontinental Kwangsian Orogeny), two stratigraphic sections respectively in Zhaotong area (Northeast Yunnan) and Puyi area (Northwestern Guizhou) that were located in the semi‐restricted inner Yangtze Sea during the OST were systematically studied, on the basis of whole‐rock geochemical composition, pyrite δ34S (δ34Spy), total organic carbon (TOC), stable Sr isotope, pyrite framboid size distribution and zircon U‐Pb age, trace elements. The evidence shows that the paleo‐oceanic environment changed significantly at the turn of the early–late Katian and formed the black shale series in the Wufeng Formation. These acritarch assemblages were formed in the transition process of the Upper Yangtze Basin from passive continental margin basin to foreland basin during this interval. Based on previous research on the genetic relationship between black shale series and plate tectonic movement, a basin‐mountain evolution model suitable for South China in the Late Ordovician is presented. The two bentonites in the Wufeng Formation with U‐Pb ages of 445.5 ± 0.8 Ma and 441.9 ± 2.4 Ma primarily originated from the intermediate–acid volcanic eruption during the collision and convergence between the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks in the Late Ordovician, the provenance region probably being located in the Jiangnan orogenic belt. Thus, we believe that the appearance of the black shale series and bentonite in the Wufeng Formation at the turn of the early–late Katian may represent the initiation of basin‐mountain transformation and the Kwangsian Orogeny in South China, which provides important evidence for the collision and convergence of the Yangtze and Cathaysia blocks in the Late Ordovician. The occurrence of plate tectonic processes on Earth during the Paleoproterozoic is supported by ca. 2.2–1.8 Ga subduction‐collision orogens associated with the assembly of the Columbia‐Nuna supercontinent. Subsequent supercontinent breakup is evidence by global ca. 1.8–1.6 Ga large igneous provinces. The North China craton is notable for containing Paleoproterozoic orogens along its margins, herein named the Northern Margin orogen, yet the nature and timing of orogenic and extensional processes of these orogens and their role in the supercontinent cycle remain unclear. In this contribution, we present new field observations, U‐Pb zircon and baddeleyite geochronology dates, and major/trace‐element and isotope geochemical analyses from the northern margin of the North China craton that detail its Paleoproterozoic tectonic and magmatic history. Specifically, we record the occurrence of ca. 2.2–2.0 Ga magmatic arc rocks, ca. 1.9–1.88 Ga tectonic mélange and mylonitic shear zones, and folded lower Paleoproterozoic strata. These rocks were affected by ca. 1.9–1.8 Ga granulite‐facies metamorphism and ca. 1.87–1.78 Ga post‐collisional, extension‐related magmatism along the cratonal northern margin. We interpret that the generation and emplacement of these rocks, and the coupled metamorphic and magmatic processes, were related to oceanic subduction and subsequent continent‐continent collision during the Paleoproterozoic. The occurrence of ca. 1.77–1.73 Ga mafic dykes and ca. 1.75 Ga mylonitic shear zones along the northern margin of the North China craton may have been related to a regional mantle plume event. Our results are consistent with modern style plate tectonics, including oceanic subduction‐related plate convergence and continent‐continent collision, operating in the Paleoproterozoic. Whether plate‐tectonics operate in early Earth's history, is one of the hotly debated questions in Earth Sciences. The North China craton of central Asia is a natural laboratory for investigating early Earth tectonic processes including subduction‐collision and large‐scale horizontal crustal motions. Paleoproterozoic subduction and continent‐continent collisional between the North China craton and outboard craton were associated with the assembly of the oldest‐known Columbia‐Nuna supercontinent. The configuration of cratons forming the supercontinent remains debated, which is partially due to an inadequate understanding of the Paleoproterozoic rocks that form the margins of the cratons and their tectonic histories. Our observations and analyses indicate the development of Paleoproterozoic Northern Margin orogen, the collisions are not just narrow belts in time and space, but rather broad, long‐lived orogenic cycles that exist well within the intraplate continental interior. Intra-oceanic subduction is a fundamental process on Earth, the study of which can improve the understanding of plate tectonic processes and the history of continental growth. Here, we report on newly recognized trondhjemite in the north of Diyanmiao ophiolite belt in North China. The trondhjemite was found along the Erenhot-Hegenshan suture zone. U-Pb zircon dating revealed that the trondhjemite crystallized at 309 ± 2.1 Ma. The trondhjemite had a high amount of SiO2 (68.94–76.45 wt %), Al2O3 (13.37–15.90 wt %), and Sr (232–601 ppm); and a low amount of K2O (1.57–2.70 wt %), Y (6.91–9.39 ppm), Ni (1.10–4.19 ppm), and Cr (1.55–13.50 ppm). The Na2O/K2O ratios were 1.90–4.37. There was a lack of negative Eu anomalies. It was relatively enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs) such as Rb, Ba, K, and Sr; was depleted in high-field-strength elements (HFSEs) such as Nb, Ta, Ti, and P; and had low total rare-earth element (REE) contents (27.73–49.63 ppm) with distinct REE fractionation (chondrite-normalized (La/Yb)N of 5.76–10.52), which was similar to adakitic rocks formed by partial melting of subducted oceanic crust. The trondhjemite, together with Diyanmiao ophiolite (335.6 Ma), may have formed during the stages of intra-oceanic subduction, suggesting that in the Early Carboniferous–Late Carboniferous, the southern Paleo-Asian Ocean was in its subduction stage. The basin sediment provides an important means of studying regional tectonic actives; however, regional climate factors, overlaying tectonic actives, affect the sedimentary process in the basin. Because of the lack of long-term scales data, the research on climate change in the arid and semi-arid region is limited. The PL02 core, located in the center area of deposition in the Yinchuan Basin, has a thick deposit with a higher resolution and sedimentation rate, making itself practical for the reconstruction of the paleoclimate and the coupling relationship between regional tectonic activities and climate change. The study of the 720-m borehole near Pingluo County is presented in this paper. The chronostratigraphic sequence of the core is established by palaeomagnetic dating. The magnetostratigraphic correlation to the geomagnetic polarity timescale shows that the PL02 core recorded the Brunhes, Matuyama, Gauss, Jaramillo, Olduvai, Kaena and Mammoth polarity chron or subchron. The sedimentation rate and the magnetostratigraphic of the core indicate that the onset of the PL02 core in this section occurred at ∼3.4 Ma BP. The analysis of the core established a detailed chronological framework for regional geological research. At the stage of 3.22–3.04 Ma, 2.581–1.95 Ma and after 0.012 Ma, the sedimentation rate increases gradually, which archive three regional tectonic subsidence events. The frequency-dependent susceptibility of the sediment is used to reconstruct the paleoclimatic change. The frequency-dependent susceptibility is more effective than the magnetic susceptibility on reflecting regional climate change in the basin. From 3.4 to 0.467 Ma, the gradual decrease of frequency-dependent susceptibility reflects the regional climate change from warm and humid to cold and dry. Potash deposits commonly accumulate in highly restricted settings at the final stage of brine evaporation. This does not mean that potash deposits are formed simply as a result of the evaporation concentration of seawater or lake water, but rather as a coupling result of particular provenance, tectonics and climate activities. In this paper, we focus on the formative mechanism of the potash deposits of Lop Nur depression in Tarim Basin to interpret the detailed coupling mechanism among provenance, tectonics and climate. In terms of the provenance of Lop Nur Lake, the water of the Tarim River which displays 'potassium-rich' characteristics play an important role. In addition, the Pliocene and Lower-Middle Pleistocene clastic beds surrounding Lop Nur Lake host a certain amount of soluble potassium and thus serves as 'source beds' for potash formation. During the late Pliocene, the Lop Nur region has declined and evolved into a great lake from the previous piedmont and diluvial fan area. Since the mid Pleistocene, the great-united Lop Nur Lake has been separated and has generated a chain system consisting of Taitema Lake, Big Ear Lake and Luobei Lake which has turned into the deepest sag in Lop Nur Lake. Dry climate in Lop Nur region has increased since the Pliocene, and became extreme at the late Pleistocene. The study implies that potash formation in Lop Nur Lake depends on the optimal combination of extreme components of provenance, tectonics and climate during a shorter-term period. The optimal patterns of three factors are generally characterized by the long-term accumulation and preliminary enrichment of potassium, the occurrence of the deepest sub-depression and the appearance of an extremely arid climate in Lop Nur region. These factors have been interacting synergistically since the forming of the saline lake and in the later stages strong 'vapor extraction' caused by extremely arid climate is needed to trigger large scale mineralization of potash deposits. The cycle process of the tidal force of celestial body for Lushan M7.0 earthquake, occurred in Lushan county of Sichuan, China on April 20, 2013, was calculated. The earthquake occurred at the lowest point phase. It indicated that the type of seismogenic fault that the tide force acted on belonged to the thrust fault. According to the tidal cycle, the abnormal air temperature change was analyzed based on National Center for Environmental Prediction satellite data around the whole China before and after the earthquake. The result showed that the air temperature changed evidently with the tide force changing. In temporal, the change went through: initial air temperature rise → strength → reaching abnormal peak → gradually decline; in spatial, the abnormal area winded its way along the margin of the southern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and went through: scattered→conversion→ scattered procession. The procession was similar to the change procession of a rock breaking under the stress loading. This shows that the stress change of rock may cause the air temperature change in the atmosphere before and after earthquake. It indicated that the tidal force of celestial body could trigger the earthquake, when the tectonic stress reaches its critical broken point and the air temperature anomaly was proportional to the seismic tectonic stress change. The fold-and-thrust belt in the eastern Sichuan basin is represented by a series of subparallel chevron anticlines. Under the orogenic tectonic setting within the South China Block in Meso-Cenozoic period and the influence of the multi-layer detachment fault, the deformation of the thrust belt exhibits remarkably layered and large-scale intracontinental thrusting structural characteristics. In this paper, we focus on the structural geometry and deformational mechanisms using the latest two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) seismic reflection data in combination with well and outcrop data. The multi-layer detachment faults, especially the upper gypsum-bearing detachment in the Middle Triassic Jialingjiang Formation and lower detachment with gypsum or shale in the Lower–Middle Cambrian system, directly control the deformational styles of the study area. Interpretation of seismic sections indicates that the fold-and-thrust belt has various deformational styles during folding, including fault-propagation fold, fault-bend fold, and detachment fold with box-fold or pop-up structural geometry. Regional location and structural boundaries play significant roles in controlling the deformational styles, and distinct differences exist among the different anticlines. The Huayingshan anticline located at the front of the thrust belt shows intense structural deformation with northwestward thrusting direction and a relatively weak opposite southeastward thrusting. In addition, the anticlines exhibit structural differences along strike and the fold-and-thrust belt in the northern segment is influenced by the North China Block. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Destruction of the North China Craton (NCC) in the Mesozoic due to subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate has attracted a lot of recent interest, with numerous studies focusing on regional tectonics and associated magmatism. Although the peak ages for this event have been established, the timing of its initiation remains poorly understood. In this paper, two rift basins in the northern Hebei Province of China, the Diaoe Basin (DB) and Houcheng Basin (HB), are studied in order to constrain the timing of destruction of the northern margin of the NCC. Both NNE-striking basins developed on Proterozoic basement. The DB is a graben controlled by normal faults on its two margins, and the HB is a half-graben bounded by normal faults on its eastern side. Basin fills include detrital sediments and volcanic rocks, which are (from bottom to top) the Houcheng Formation (Fh), the Zhangjiakou Formation (Fzh), the Shijiayao Formation (Fs), and the Huajiying Formation (Fhj). The Fh is composed mainly of detrital sediments interlayered with andesite in its lower section, and interlayered with felsic volcanics (rhyolite) in its upper section. There exists a transitional change from the Fh to the thick felsic volcanic strata of the Fzh. Geochemically, the andesite layers in the lower Fh were most likely derived from mixing of crust and mantle melts, whereas the felsic rocks were derived from melting of the lower crust. U–Pb dating of zircons by LA-ICP-MS yielded ages for the lower Fh andesites of ca. 165.7 Ma in the HB and ca. 157.4 Ma in the DB. The felsic rocks at the base of the Fzh yielded ages of ca. 155.1 Ma in the HB and ca. 149.2–143.4 Ma in the DB. The Fs and Fhj in the DB both yielded similar ages of ca. 136 Ma. The development of rift basins, together with the occurrence of massive felsic volcanic rocks, indicates a period of significant extension and thinning of the NCC. The ca. 165.7–155.1 Ma age for andesites not only represents the initial timing of crustal extension, but also the timing of thermally induced melting of the lower lithosphere. In our paper, we suggested that the Junan granulite xenoliths and xenocrysts record evolution of the Precambrian lower crust beneath the southeastern North China Craton (NCC). Yuan and Xia (2015) disagree with us. However, they have not fully considered the evolutional histories of the NCC lithosphere, and geochemical and isotopic compositions of the Junan xenoliths. We also contend that they have misinterpreted the available geophysical data. Synthesizing the geochronological characteristics of the NCC lower crust, nature of the Junan granulite xenoliths, and reinterpretation of the resistivity profile, we again emphasize that the Junan granulite xenoliths are tectonically affiliated to the NCC lower crust, and the Junan zircon data could reflect the complex evolution of the lower crust beneath the southeastern NCC.
