This paper examines the response made by the University of Calgary to changes in Alberta's language policy in its language teacher education programme. The paper outlines recent policy changes in Alberta aimed at developing language education in schools and then examines how such changes have had an impact on planning for the delivery' of education for language teachers at the University of Calgary. This paper reports on the development of a 'suitability for practice' policy in a large Canadian school of social work. Pertinent gatekeeping issues are reviewed and the results of a survey on suitability polices in Canadian social work schools are presented. The paper concludes with a discussion of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Social Work Suitability Policy. This policy integrates current research on gatekeeping, the results of the Canadian schools survey and input from primary stakeholders: the students, faculty members, the professional association and the community. In this paper we describe how knowledge management and software process support can be integrated to improve the efficiency of virtual software teams. The approach presented here integrates a process enactment environment with an on-demand knowledge delivery strategy that is based on parameterized information needs models. The parameters in the information needs models are bound at project execution time to values extracted from the process enactment engine. Thus, the approach supports virtual teams by establishing a platform for systematic and task-specific knowledge exchange. The proposed approach is prototypically implemented in the MILOS system, an open source project of the University of Calgary (Canada) and the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany). This paper traces the century-long history of a library that has served teacher preparation programs in Calgary, Alberta, since 1909. It looks at how this library's role and collections adapted to shifting notions of what constituted good teacher education and changing economic circumstances. In recounting this history, the paper examines the historical circumstances that created a separate education library at the University of Calgary and how issues of group and professional identity contributed to its continuing existence. The article describes the creation and use of a virtual drunk driving simulation game. It was developed at the University of Calgary with input from the Calgary Police Service. The game was based on generic driving game software from the book "Start Your Engines: Developing Driving and Racing Games" by professor James R. Parker. Effects of alcohol such as impaired reaction time and blurred vision, particularly in terms of bright lights and moving objects, were incorporated. A random component to the reaction time delay was incorporated. The game's potential benefit in terms of educating drivers about how difficult it can be to drive while drunk is discussed.

This is a collective interpretive record of a graduate course in Social Work on participatory action research (PAR) offered during the winter of 2007. It is written by 14 individuals including the instructor. It was inspired by the image of a chickadee bird borrowed from Jonathan Lear's (2006) book Radical Hope. The chickadee is a powerful metaphor for aboriginal peoples of Western Canada as she thrives in the bitter winters despite her tiny frame. She does so because she is gifted with deep listening in her environment wherein lies all she needs to know. The class of 14 met in a circle, read articles, kept learning journals, argued, ate together, practised popular education techniques and presented our emerging knowledge in multi-media forms. We related our experience to recent articles in EAR and to other PAR literature. The chickadee facilitated our deep listening to writings and to our own stories. This exploratory case study of the role of the clinical laboratory in teaching and learning family nursing skills was undertaken at the Family Nursing Unit (FNU), University of Calgary. Qualitative data were gathered from current graduate students, graduates of the Master of Nursing program, faculty members, and clients of the FNU using participant observation, in-depth interviews, and review of documents. Content analysis was used to identify key themes. The study found that the family nursing clinical laboratory provided a safe, structured learning environment where students had the opportunity to observe expert clinical practice in family nursing and undertake closely supervised practice. Graduates felt well prepared and confident in their advanced nursing practice with families. Key to the success of the clinical laboratory was the teaching faculty who were skilled clinicians in family systems nursing and who used this same theoretical orientation to guide the relational, strengths-based, and collaborative learning with students. The article reports that nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) might be safe for pregnant women who want to quit smoking. A study by Shabih Hasan and colleagues at the University of Calgary's Health Sciences Centre focused on the litter size and pup weight of pregnant rats who were exposed to a nicotine dosage of 2 mg/kg/day. Hasan concludes that short-term use of NRT could be beneficial to mothers and fetuses because it would reduce exposure to the more harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke, which contains 4,700 chemicals. A Danish study suggests that NRT skin patches are safe in pregnancy. Tim Coleman, associate professor and researcher at the University of Nottingham, comments on a new study funded by the British National Health Service.
