During the past few decades, the ecosystems of lakes have been reshaped greatly by global climate change and expanding human activities. As the second largest freshwater lake in China, Dongting Lake is the most important regulating lake in the Yangtze River Basin because it has extensive flood storage capacity. The dynamic characteristics of its circulation and sediment transport are significantly affected by the scheduling and interception of control reservoirs at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. In this paper, a central lake reservoir is proposed to improve the flood and drought resistance of Dongting Lake. The efficiency of the central lake reservoir is investigated numerically by developing a two-dimensional shallow water model. We demonstrate that current velocity and water elevation during flood and drought events can be influenced significantly by the construction of the central lake reservoir. The flood storage capacity of the central lake reservoir can reduce the peak flood elevation significantly in West Dongting Lake, which would enhance its flood resistance. The water replenishment of the central lake reservoir in the dry season can also efficiently increase the lake water elevation to enhance the drought resistance in the area surrounding the lake. The vast Dongting Lake in the middle Yangtze River basin, China, was occupied by Chinese Neolithic settlements starting 10 000 years ago, and rice cultivation there is probably the earliest in the world. The numerous Neolithic settlements identified by previous archaeological surveys represent the five major Neolithic cultural stages, i.e. the Pengtoushan (9000–7900 cal. yr BP), Zaoshixiaceng (7900–6800 cal. yr BP), Daxi (6800–5500 cal. yr BP), Qujialing (5500–5000 cal. yr BP), and Shijiahe (5000–4000 cal. yr BP). Using sedimentological and geoarchaeological approaches, this paper analyses the drivers of basin-scale settlement relocation in relation to lake-level fluctuations and monsoon climate variations in the Holocene. The relocation of Neolithic sites around the lake shoreline and on the adjacent floodplain, together with radiocarbon-dated stratigraphy, clearly indicates that the shape of the lake basin was an incised and elongated valley occupied by a lake in the early Holocene, which became a broader and shallower depression in the mid to late Holocene. The established lowest habitable base of the settlements positioned on the lake shore assists reconstruction of the change in lake level from 22 m at 9000 cal. yr BP to 26 m at 5500–4000 cal. yr BP, although higher and lower lake levels occurred during the intervening cultural stages. The pollen spectra reveal a warming trend throughout the Holocene with at least four major temperature cycles, driven by monsoon variations between temperate- and warm-humid conditions. In the early Holocene the climate changed from cool-dry to warm-humid, and this played a key role in developing the earliest Pengtoushan culture in the region. Subsequent climate fluctuations fit well with the advance and retreat of the lake shore, also coevally with Neolithic site movements in the lake region. Abstract: In recent years a large number of floods occurred in the Dongting Lake region, China, and flood prevention and control have become a focus in the middle Yangtze River. How to use the dispersed sub-fast-flood storage area in Dongting basin rationally and control water level and flow process will improve flood prevention ability. In this paper an improved systematic flood simulation method coupling one and two-dimensional hydraulic model is established aiming at special area. The flood evolution process, different flood discharge scale, flood storage and embanking effect are simulated according to the changing spatial gate position and extra flood magnanimity for the typical hydrologic years. An optimized scheduling scheme by using the parallel algorithm and numerical computing method is preferred in different flood periods. The research results indicate the optimized flood diversion gate and operation scheme in three shunts river system will directly control the water level in the whole lake region. The research results provide practical basis for systematic floods control and is helpful to assess flood disaster in Yangtze River basin. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Habitat fragment owning to obstruct of dams and barriers badly affect the aquatic faunas. Many spawning sites of migration fishes are lost, and their growth and reproduction are affected. The Yangtze River with connected lakes is the most important fresh water fishery area in China. The Yangtze''s four major carp species (YFMCS) are the most typical migration fish lived in this area. They reproduce in river and grow in lake. Distributaries lies between the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake are the passages for these migration fishes. Due to the construction of dams and barriers, some original passages were out of use. Up to now, only four channels exist between the river and lake, there are Songcikou, Taipingkou and Ouchikou normally called “three outlets”, and Chenglingji inlet. Diverted Water Volume (DWV) and the Percentage of Diverted Water (PDW) through the three outlets reflect the relationship between the Yangtze River and the Dongting Lake.The variation of river-lake relation caused by dam construction, and the effect on migration fishes are discussed in this paper. The relationship of DWV and fry output in middle reach of the Yangtze river and the Dongting Lake, PDW and the percentage of the YFMCS in a total catch of fish, DWV and flux of carp fry at the Jianli station, DWV and yield of the YFMCS were analyzed. The results show that dams and barriers constructed on the Yangtze River threaten some fish species in this area, especially the migration fishes. The connectivity degree of river and lake decide the growth and reproduction of emigration fishes, the yield of the YFMCS increase by the DWV increase, and hydraulic project have important influence on reproduction of fishes. In order to reduce the ecological influence of hydropower projects, reservoir management especially in spawning season should integrate ecological demand. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) affects the evolution of the interactions between the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake in China and water diversions from the river, which are essential to water resources management in this large river–lake system. Due to the lack of up-to-date and detailed channel topographic/bathymetric data, a simplified flow model based on rating curves was developed to simulate discharges in the river system, and to further quantify and differentiate the contributions of river erosion and flow regulation of the TGR at a seasonal scale. The results indicate that the effect of channel alteration counteracts the effect of reservoir regulation in the high-flow periods. The impacts of TGR regulation on water diversions for both pre- and post-flood seasons were significant, but no obvious changes in the discharge diversion ratios were observed on an annual time scale. Abstract: Water‐level variations are an internal aspect of lake ecosystems that play a key role in structuring aquatic diversity and providing ecosystem services. In this study, the hydrologic alteration of Dongting Lake induced by the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) was assessed using indicators of hydrologic alteration and range of variability approach. The results demonstrate a declining trend in autumn water level (0.52–2.26 m) and 5–35 days' advancement for date of minimum annual water level because of the impound of water by the TGD in early autumn. The spatial patterns in the degree of the indicators of hydrologic alteration were different among the sub‐lake regions. Annual minimum water level and timing of annual extreme water level suffered a high degree of alteration in the eastern part of the lake, whereas autumn water level, date of minimum water level, and number of reversals in the western part of the lake showed a high degree of alteration. The average integrated degree of hydrologic alteration (D0) for Dongting Lake was 50.40%, indicating that the hydrologic regime suffered a moderate alteration. The most ecologically relevant hydrologic indicators are critical for understanding eco‐hydrology. On the basis of principal component analysis, the five selected ecologically relevant hydrologic indicators were 90‐day minimum, date of minimum, high pulse duration, date of maximum, and May water level. Further studies are required to understand the impact of the TGD on water conditions in Dongting Lake, especially related to the response of the aquatic ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
