This study investigates long-term trends of criteria air pollutants, including NO 2 , CO, SO 2 , O 3 and PM 2.5 , and O x (meaning NO 2+ O 3) measured in 10 Canadian cities during the last 2 to 3 decades. We also investigated associated driving forces in terms of emission reductions, perturbations due to varying weather conditions and large-scale wildfires, as well as changes in O 3 sources and sinks. Two machine learning methods, the random forest algorithm and boosted regression trees, were used to extract deweathered mixing ratios (or mass concentrations) of the pollutants. The Mann–Kendall trend test of the deweathered and original annual average concentrations of the pollutants showed that, on the timescale of 20 years or longer, perturbation due to varying weather conditions on the decadal trends of the pollutants are minimal (within ±2%) in about 70 % of the studied cases, although it might be larger (but at most 16 %) in the remaining cases. NO 2 , CO and SO 2 showed decreasing trends in the last 2 to 3 decades in all the cities except CO in Montréal. O 3 showed increasing trends in all the cities except Halifax, mainly due to weakened titration reaction between O 3 and NO. O x , however, showed decreasing trends in all the cities except Victoria, because the increase in O 3 is much less than the decrease in NO 2. In three of the five eastern Canadian cities, emission reductions dominated the decreasing trends in PM 2.5 , but no significant trends in PM 2.5 were observed in the other two cites. In the five western Canadian cities, increasing or no significant trends in PM 2.5 were observed, likely due to unpredictable large-scale wildfires overwhelming or balancing the impacts of emission reductions on PM 2.5. In addition, despite improving air quality during the last 2 decades in most cities, an air quality health index of above 10 (representing a very high risk condition) still occasionally occurred after 2010 in western Canadian cities because of the increased large-scale wildfires. Currently, stroke patients are transported to the nearest stroke center, following specific protocols. Yet, these protocols do not consider many factors, including the spatial variation in population density, the stroke's severity, the time since stroke onset, and the congestion level at the receiving stroke center. We develop an analytical framework that enriches the stroke transport decision-making process by incorporating these factors. Our research contributes to the literature of stroke care systems by (i) developing the first analytical framework to determine the optimal primary hospital destination in a regional stroke network and (ii) comparing the impact of incorporating prehospital triaging on health outcomes. To this end, we develop an efficient reformulation for allocation problems with stochastic demand and multiserver system under congestion. We derive data-driven outcome prediction models embedded in mixed integer second-order cone programming formulation. Our framework is applied to two real-life cases: Montreal and Quebec City Stroke Networks. We show that adopting a triage strategy could lead to significantly improved health outcomes, where the magnitude of these improvements varies with the networks' sizes and congestion levels. In the Montreal case, our proposed policy may increase the ratio of patients for therapeutic intervention eligibility by 12.5% while improving by 69% the number of patients with more than two days of emergency department boarding delays. Our results reveal that it is important to consider the network's characteristics in making a decision for or against implementing a prehospital triage strategy. This paper considers three configurations of air source heat pumps and building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems in a solar house. This study evaluates energy efficiency and flexibility when interacting with a smart grid. The reference case is a 5 kW BIPV system on the roof with a separate air-source heat pump water heater (HPWH). In the two more novel options we have: first, a 5 kW BIPV/thermal (BIPV/T) roof system where the heated air from the BIPV/T system is ducted to the air source of the HPWH, which also contains integrated thermal storage (hot water); in the second case we have an attached solarium with a 5 kW semi-transparent photovoltaic façade, with the solar heated air in the solarium connected to the air source of the HPWH with integrated water thermal storage. The three cases are modelled with an explicit finite difference thermal network model, and energy performance is determined and compared over a typical heating season in Montreal, Canada. The energy flexibility potential of the options is compared for different scenarios, such as heating the thermal water storage during the daytime (e.g. using the solar heat in the novel options) and using it for space heating during the time that the grid is under stress (and may have price incentives). Results show that the second novel case utilizing the solarium air as the source of the heat pump resulted in an over 80% energy use reduction relative to the reference. In comparison, the BIPV/T configuration had around 20% reduction compared to the reference case. The tank volume and solarium size had the highest impact on the flexibility of the system. Daily weather records for the St Lawrence Valley region in Québec, Canada, exist on a continuous basis for nearly two centuries and on a more fragmentary level back to the French regime. Daily and sub-daily observations allow for the potential to reconstruct and analyse not only hazardous weather events of short duration but also high impact events such as freezing rain, snowstorms, blowing snow or thunder. Weather records can also give us a more detailed understanding of longer lasting events, such as consecutive dry days leading to drought, or long winters with consecutive frost days which have an impact on health and the demand for domestic heat, which can itself lead to hazardous conditions for air quality. Dry summers, severe snowstorms and long winters have always occurred in the St Lawrence Valley region. This paper looks at the frequency and evolution of a subset of weather events which constitute natural hazards over a period of centuries, from 1742 to the present day, with gaps from 1754–1798 and 1870–1953. The annual frequencies of most events fall broadly within the same ranges over the course of the past centuries. However, a decrease in the number of consecutive dry days and a concomitant increase in precipitation-related hazardous events, such as thunder and freezing rain, can be seen in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries compared to the nineteenth century. The mid-eighteenth century also saw a high frequency of freezing rain events. A mid-twentieth century peak in the number of days with smoke also stands out and is related to industrial and domestic sources of heating and energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water, sprayed in the form of tiny droplets, has emerged as a potential fire suppressant after the halon compounds such as trifluorobromomethane (CF3Br, Halon 1301) were banned by the Montreal protocol. The size distribution of the water droplet plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of the water spray in fire suppression. A numerical investigation of the influence of size distribution of a polydisperse water spray on extinction of counterflow diffusion flames is presented in this paper. This study uses laminar finite rate model with reduced CHEMKIN chemistry for numerical simulations. The discrete phase, namely the water spray, is simulated using Lagrangian Discrete Phase Modelling approach. In this work, the polydispersity of water spray is taken into account in the numerical simulation by a suitable Rosin–Rammler distribution. Results obtained from numerical simulation are validated with the experimental results reported in the literature. This study demonstrates that the representation of the polydisperse spray by a monodisperse spray (with droplet diameter same as the SMD of the polydisperse spray) in numerical simulations is not always justified and it leads to deviation from the experimental results. The effects of number mean diameter and spread parameter on the efficacy of flame suppression are investigated for polydisperse sprays. A comprehensive comparison is done between the effectiveness of monodisperse and polydisperse water sprays. An optimum droplet diameter is obtained for monodisperse sprays for which the effectiveness of the spray is maximum. This paper summarizes the activity of the chosen Polish geodetic research teams in 2015-2018 in the fields of Earth: rotation, dynamics as well as magnetic field. It has been prepared for the needs of the presentation on the 27th International Union of Geodesy and Geodynamics General Assembly, Montreal, Canada. The part concerning Earth rotation is mostly focused on the use of modelling of diurnal and subdiurnal components of Earth rotation by including low frequency components of polar motion and UT1 in the analysis, study of free oscillations in Earth rotation derived from both space-geodetic observations of polar motion and the time variation of the second degree gravitational field coefficients derived from Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) observations, new methods of monitoring of Earth rotation, as well as studies on applications of the Ring Laser Gyroscope (RLG) for direct and continuous measurements of changes in Earth rotation and investigations of the hydrological excitation of polar motion. Much attention was devoted to the GRACE-derived gravity for explaining the influence of surface mass redistributions on polar motion. Monitoring of the geodynamical phenomena is divided into study on local and regional dynamics using permanent observations, investigation on tidal phenomena, as well as research on hydrological processes and sea level variation parts. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the preliminary stage of dementia, which may lead to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in the elderly people. Therefore, early detection of MCI has the potential to minimize the risk of AD by ensuring the proper mental health care before it is too late. In this paper, we demonstrate a single-channel EEG-based MCI detection method, which is cost-effective and portable, and thus suitable for regular home-based patient monitoring. We collected the scalp EEG data from 23 subjects, while they were stimulated with five auditory speech signals. The cognitive state of the subjects was evaluated by the Montreal cognitive assessment test (MoCA). We extracted 590 features from the event-related potential (ERP) of the collected EEG signals, which included time and spectral domain characteristics of the response. The top 25 features, ranked by the random forest method, were used for classification models to identify subjects with MCI. Robustness of our model was tested using leave-one-out cross-validation while training the classifiers. Best results (leave-one-out cross-validation accuracy 87.9%, sensitivity 84.8%, specificity 95%, and F score 85%) were obtained using support vector machine (SVM) method with radial basis kernel (RBF) (sigma = 10/cost $= 10^{2}$). Similar performances were also observed with logistic regression (LR), further validating the results. Aim: This paper aims to advance our understanding of the experience of participating in peer support groups for family members of persons with psychosis and to expand the scant body of literature on peer support in the context of early intervention services for psychosis. Such an examination is relevant because the implementation and uptake of family‐focused interventions remain inconsistent in early intervention services, despite their proven benefits. Methods: To enable family caregivers to support one another, a family peer support project was initiated at an early intervention service for psychosis in Montreal, Canada. A family peer support provider and researchers collaboratively designed and conducted this study to examine the experience of those who participated in family peer support groups. Forty‐four family members completed an English or French online questionnaire. Thematic analysis was used to code responses to open‐ended questions to unpack crucial elements of this peer support intervention. Results: Three key themes were identified—the impact of psychosis on families; understanding and coping with psychosis through family peer support; and improving family peer support services. Mutual support through sharing experiences; gains in knowledge of the illness and its treatment; emotional support; and increased caregiving and self‐care capacities and skills were identified as critical benefits of family peer support. Conclusion: Family peer support can be an acceptable and cherished means of engaging and sustaining families and enhancing their caregiving skills. Its integration into early intervention services holds the promise of helping promote recovery and reducing caregiver burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we assess the performance variation of the municipalities in the greater Montreal area between 2005 and 2010 for a set of 12 common urban sustainability indicators. We then measure the global and local spatial autocorrelation of each indicator's variation in order to describe the regional distribution of the indicators. Three different patterns emerge from this analysis: (1) converging pattern; (2) diverging pattern, and (3) random pattern of the performance variation of the municipalities across the region. The results suggest the relevance of further research on the potential spillover effects of an individual city's performance, which could be overlooked because a local administration's monitoring of progress is generally performed within its own jurisdiction. Examples of urban sustainability issues for which assessment and monitoring could be more effective at a regional scale include urban densification and public security. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Network Robustness Index (NRI) was one of the first tools to successfully assess networkwide congestion effects due to single-link closures. This paper investigates the use of systemwide metrics in the context of Montreal’s urban road network, and provides a new mechanism to evaluate the importance of individual links while internalizing the environmental perspective. Specifically, the NRI is expanded to include road emissions in the link criticality analysis process, resulting in the creation of an Emissions-based NRI (ENRI), to be used in conjunction with the NRI. The results of this new Emissions-based NRI (ENRI) are compared with the NRI results and we observe that both tools provide similar results for major scenarios (such as capacity reduction on major bridges) while for minor scenarios (such as capacity reduction on arterial roads) the results are quite different. Bioclimatic design strategies are among the most promising sustainable approaches for improving energy efficiency of buildings. However, their contributions to reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint of buildings are largely dependent on the alignment of building design with climatic conditions. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of key bioclimatic design strategies, namely green roof and walls, tree shading, natural ventilation, glazing system, blinds, building orientation and Trombe wall on the energy performance of a typical residential building in the three most dominant climates worldwide. These strategies are analyzed in Riyadh, Tetouan and Montreal cities, selected to represent those climates, viz. arid, temperate and cold climates, respectively. To this end, numerous dynamic thermal simulations were performed using EnergyPlus software. The findings of this research revealed that, individually, green roof and walls, and Trombe wall strategies have the highest performance in terms of energy savings and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mitigation for all selected locations. Moreover, blinds and tree shading strategies are too recommended for arid and temperate climates, while natural ventilation is advisable only for the last one. Additionally, significant energy saving could be achieved by optimizing the building orientation, especially in arid and cold climates. However, the greatest energy savings and GHG emissions mitigation were achieved (i) by combining green roof and walls, Trombe wall, blinds and tree shading techniques for arid climates, (ii) by adding natural ventilation to the last combination for temperate climates, and (iii) when green roof and walls design is combined with an optimal building orientation for cold climates, with a share of 33%, 58% and 19%, respectively. This work is intended to be a reference to help building designers and engineers to select the appropriate bioclimatic design strategies according to the building's climate. • The main bioclimatic strategies' effect in dominant climates worldwide is examined. • Three locations were selected to represent the dominant climates. • Green roof and walls design is the most energy-efficient bioclimatic strategy. • Significant energy-saving can be achieved by combining key bioclimatic strategies. • Applying the investigated strategies greatly reduces GHG emissions in all climates. Considering the increasingly ubiquitous and frequent use of Facebook among college students, this study sought to explicate and unravel the salient determinants of Facebook use. Specifically, the main goal was to ascertain the factors influencingCollège d'enseignement général et professionnel(CEGEP) students’ Facebook use, for which a structural equation model was proposed to examine the relationships between constructs affecting this process. Using a recently proposed extended technology acceptance model, Dhammic Technology Acceptance Model (DTAM) for Facebook use, proposed by Teo and Jarupunphol [2015. Dhammic technology acceptance model (DTAM): Extending the TAM using a condition of attachment in Buddhism.Journal of Educational Computing Research,52(1), 136–151. doi:10.1177/0735633114568859], we present results of the study using 233 completed survey data from a sample of CEGEP students in Montreal, Quebec. The DTAM was originally tested using a sample of Thai university students; this leads to a natural question as to whether this extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) model holds in a Western sample. The findings from the present study support the validity of the DTAM for explicating Facebook use, and add empirical evidence to the DTAM, according to which the condition of attachment exerts influence on Facebook use. This paper presents a heuristic model predictive control (MPC) methodology to activate energy flexibility in fully electric school buildings in cold climates to reduce electricity demand during peak demand periods of the electric grid. To streamline the implementation of MPC, the proposed approach employs grey-box archetypes, a clustering of weather conditions to identify typical scenarios and a limited number of possible setpoint profiles. A data-driven grey-box approach is used to create archetype models for different thermal zones in a typical school building; this approach enables rapid development and requires much less calibration data than black-box models. A third-order resistance-capacitance thermal network for zones with convective heating and a fourth-order model for zones with radiant floor heating are developed and calibrated using measured data from an all-electric school building in Québec, Canada. The weather data are clustered into several categories, representing different weather conditions (6 clusters representing two ambient temperature ranges and three solar radiation ranges). The heuristic MPC strategy uses predefined optimal setpoint profiles for each cluster and weather prediction one day ahead to shift the building load from on-peak to off-peak hours. For each heuristic MPC scenario, the model runs a simulation using forecast weather data to quantify and activate energy flexibility in response to grid requirements. The developed MPC framework was implemented in the school used as the case study. Ten classrooms are investigated, with six using the MPC and four as a reference case with the reactive control system and default zone setpoint profiles. Results indicate that the school building can provide between 47% and 95% energy flexibility (load shifting relative to reference) during on-peak hours and up to 44% electricity cost reduction while satisfying acceptable temperature constraints. By implementing the proposed MPC, energy flexibility of 32 W/m2 of floor area for the zones with a convective heating system and 65 W/m2 of floor area for the zones with radiant heating can be achieved during a demand response event. Using location theory as a starting point, this paper aims to understand how coworking spaces (CSs) locate within the city and how they reacted to the stress of COVID-19. Through a case study of the city of Montreal (Canada), we show that most CSs locate in areas of high transit accessibility and in central districts, but there is a trend – possibly accelerated by COVID – towards more suburban locations. These location strategies follow logics similar to those of Knowledge intensive services (KIS), including the tendency of some to agglomerate and of others to disperse. For some CSs, there is also heightened sensitivity to interactions with, and contributions to, the local community. Hence, faced with COVID, CSs in transit-accessible places combine an inward strategy, centralizing their activities around members, with a networking strategy , pooling some services and developing partnerships with local or other nearby CSs. Furthermore, CSs in peri -central neighbourhoods are the most vulnerable and have adopted retraction strategies. In contrast, CSs located in low accessibility districts outside the agglomeration adopt an expansion strategy, opening new branches near suburban residential areas to attract nearby workers. As hybrid work evolves, these results can help urban planners better understand the location rationales of CSs, how they adapt, and to what extent they bring added value to local urban development. Objective: Evaluate the effects of five disinfection methods on bacterial concentrations in hospital sink drains, focusing on three opportunistic pathogens (OPs): Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Design: Over two years, three sampling campaigns were conducted in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Samples from 19 sink drains were taken at three time points: before, during, and after disinfection. Bacterial concentration was measured using culture-based and flow cytometry methods. High-throughput short sequence typing was performed to identify the three OPs and assess S. marcescens persistence after disinfection at the genotypic level. Setting: This study was conducted in a pediatric hospitals NICU in Montréal, Canada, which is divided in an intensive and intermediate care side, with individual rooms equipped with a sink. Interventions: Five treatments were compared: self-disinfecting drains, chlorine disinfection, boiling water disinfection, hot tap water flushing, and steam disinfection. Results: This study highlights significant differences in the effectiveness of disinfection methods. Chlorine treatment proved ineffective in reducing bacterial concentration, including the three OPs. In contrast, all other drain interventions resulted in an immediate reduction in culturable bacteria (4–8 log) and intact cells (2–3 log). Thermal methods, particularly boiling water and steam treatments, exhibited superior effectiveness in reducing bacterial loads, including OPs. However, in drains with well-established bacterial biofilms, clonal strains of S. marcescens recolonized the drains after heat treatments. Conclusions: Our study supports thermal disinfection (>80°C) for pathogen reduction in drains but highlights the need for additional trials and the implementation of specific measures to limit biofilm formation. Past major earthquakes have demonstrated that a significant proportion of existing residential buildings are vulnerable to seismic hazards, resulting in economic and social losses. The assessment of earthquake‐induced losses is crucial for devising strategies aimed at enhancing seismic resilience through mitigation plans and emergency response measures. This study intends to provide an analytical methodology for evaluating economic losses for existing residential concrete shear wall buildings in Eastern Canada seismic zones based on Canadian‐compatible seismic capacity parameters. A sampled data set related to residential buildings in Montreal was analyzed and statistical distributions were developed that represent the proportion of buildings in different seismic design code levels and number of stories. Vulnerability analyses were performed, which involved estimating buildings' response under seismic hazard inputs according to the 2020 National Building Code of Canada and conducting loss assessment for structural components, nonstructural displacement‐sensitive components, nonstructural acceleration‐sensitive components, and contents. The results of vulnerability analyses in terms of loss ratio curves showed that the seismic performance varies between mid‐rise and high‐rise concrete shear wall buildings with different seismic design code levels, and nonstructural displacement‐sensitive components exerted the most significant influence on overall economic losses among building components. In addition, a comparison was conducted between Canadian‐compatible economic loss ratio curves and those developed based on the standard seismic capacity parameters in the Hazus technical manual and differences in predicted loss ratios were discussed. The developed loss ratio curves can be integrated into regional scale loss assessment tools for rapid estimation of earthquake‐induced economic losses for concrete shear wall buildings as a function of seismic intensity. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a substantial increase in the number of people working from home (telecommuting), in turn leading to unprecedented changes in mobility patterns worldwide. Due to the changing context of the pandemic, there is still a significant gap in knowledge regarding the effects of working from home on workers' travel patterns. The main goal of this work is to unravel the interrelationship between telecommuting during the COVID-19 pandemic, the frequency of active travel for non-work utilitarian purposes, and local accessibility levels around workers' homes. This study uses a longitudinal approach by analyzing travel and telecommuting behavior data from a two-wave survey administered in Montreal in 2019, pre-pandemic, and 2021, during COVID-19 (n = 452). Through a set of weighted multi-level linear regressions, we study the effects of telecommuting on the frequency of active travel for non-work utilitarian purposes, mediated by local accessibility around the household. Results show that the effect of telecommuting on non-work active travel for utilitarian purposes is highly dependent on local accessibility levels around the person's household. For workers living in high local accessibility areas, an increase in telecommuting during the pandemic has induced an increase in active trips for non-work utilitarian purposes. On the other hand, for workers residing in low local accessibility neighborhoods, the effect is the opposite. In medium- to high-rise buildings, single shear walls (SSWs) are often used to resist lateral force due to wind and earthquakes. They are designed to dissipate seismic energy mainly through plastic hinge zones at the base. However, they often display large post-earthquake deformations that can give rise to many economic and safety concerns within buildings. Hence, the primary objective of this research study is to minimize residual deformations in existing SSWs located in the Western and Eastern seismic zones of Canada, thereby enhancing their resilience and self-centering capacity. To that end, four SSWs of 20 and 15 stories, located in Vancouver and Montreal, were meticulously designed and detailed per the latest Canadian standards and codes. The study assessed the impact of three innovative strengthening schemes on the seismic response of these SSWs through 2D nonlinear time history (NLTH) analysis. All three strengthening schemes involved the application of Externally Bonded Fiber Reinforced Polymer (EB-FRP) to the shear walls. Accordingly, a total of 208 NLTH analyses were conducted to assess the effectiveness of all strengthening configurations. The findings unveiled that the most efficient technique for reducing residual drift in SSWs involved applying three layers of vertical FRP sheets to the extreme edges of the wall, full FRP wrapping the walls, and full FRP wrapping of the plastic hinge zone. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that implementing these strengthening schemes may lead to an increase in bending moment and base shear force demands within the walls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Montreal consensus recognizes chronic cough as an extra-esophageal manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux disease. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the effects of acid-suppressive medications in adults with non-specific chronic cough. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022368769). Placebo-controlled randomized trials evaluating the impact of acid-suppressive medications on persistent cough were included. The systematic search was performed on the 1st of November 2022 in three databases. A random-effects model was used for the calculations. The effect size was the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). A total number of 11 double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized trials were included in the meta-analysis. Data showed that compared to placebo, PPIs decreased the severity of cough (SMD 0.33; CI 0.05; 0.61). Therapeutic response was not different in patients with non-specific chronic cough only, compared to those with laryngopharyngeal reflux. Prolonged treatment durations did not result in greater symptomatic improvement, with SMD 0.33 (CI − 0.22; 0.88), 0.31 (CI − 1.74; 2.35), 0.32 (CI − 0.29; 0.93) and 0.34 (CI − 0.16; 0.85), following 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment, respectively. The pooled analysis of the improvement in quality of life with PPIs found an SMD of 0.39 (CI − 0.51; 1.29). Introduction: Thrombotic events are more than twice as common in inflammatory bowel disease patients as in the general population. We report an interesting and rare case of portal vein thrombosis as a venous thromboembolic event in the context of extraintestinal manifestations of Crohn's disease. We also conducted a literature review on portal vein thrombosis associated with inflammatory bowel disease, with the following concepts: inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, portal vein, and thrombosis. Case presentation: A 24-year-old Syrian female with active chronic Crohn's disease was diagnosed 11 years ago and classified as A1L3B1P according to the Montreal classification. She had no prior surgical history. Her previous medications included azathioprine and prednisolone. Her Crohn's disease activity index was 390 points. Gastroduodenoscopy revealed grade I esophageal varices, a complication of portal hypertension. Meanwhile, a colonoscopy revealed several deep ulcers in the sigmoid, rectum, and descending colon. An investigation of portal vein hypertension revealed portal vein thrombosis. We used corticosteroids to induce remission, followed by tapering; additionally she received ustekinumab to induce and maintain remission. She began on low-molecular-weight heparin for 1 week, warfarin for 3 months, and then apixaban, a novel oral anticoagulant, after excluding antiphospholipid syndrome. Primary prophylaxis for esophageal varices was not required. After 1 year, she achieved clinical, biochemical, and endoscopic remission. Despite 1 year of treatment, a computed tomography scan revealed no improvement in portal vein recanalization. Conclusion: Portal vein thrombosis is a rare and poorly defined complication of inflammatory bowel disease. It is usually exacerbated by inflammatory bowel disease. The symptoms are nonspecific and may mimic a flare-up of inflammatory bowel disease, making the diagnosis difficult. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a disproportionate impact on the health and wellbeing of people who use drugs (PWUD) in Canada. However less is known about jurisdictional commonalities and differences in COVID-19 exposure and impacts of pandemic-related restrictions on competing health and social risks among PWUD living in large urban centres. Methods: Between May 2020 and March 2021, leveraging infrastructure from ongoing cohorts of PWUD, we surveyed 1,025 participants from Vancouver (n = 640), Toronto (n = 158), and Montreal (n = 227), Canada to describe the impacts of pandemic-related restrictions on basic, health, and harm reduction needs. Results: Among participants, awareness of COVID-19 protective measures was high; however, between 10 and 24% of participants in each city-specific sample reported being unable to self-isolate. Overall, 3–19% of participants reported experiencing homelessness after the onset of the pandemic, while 20–41% reported that they went hungry more often than usual. Furthermore, 8–33% of participants reported experiencing an overdose during the pandemic, though most indicated no change in overdose frequency compared the pre-pandemic period. Most participants receiving opioid agonist therapy in the past six months reported treatment continuity during the pandemic (87–93%), however, 32% and 22% of participants in Toronto and Montreal reported missing doses due to service disruptions. There were some reports of difficulty accessing supervised consumption sites in all three sites, and drug checking services in Vancouver. Conclusion: Findings suggest PWUD in Canada experienced difficulties meeting essential needs and accessing some harm reduction services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Air pollution is a major health hazard, and while air quality overall has been improving in industrialized nations, pollution is still a major economic and public health issue, with some species, such as ozone (O 3), still exceeding the standards set by governing agencies. Chemical transport models (CTMs) are valuable tools that aid in our understanding of the risks of air pollution both at local and regional scales. In this study, the Polair3D v1.11 CTM of the Polyphemus air quality modeling platform was set up over Quebec, Canada, to assess the model's capability in predicting key air pollutant species over the region, at seasonal temporal scales and at regional spatial scales. The simulation by the model included three nested domains, at horizontal resolutions of 9 km by 9 km and 3 km by 3 km, as well as two 1 km by 1 km domains covering the cities of Montréal and Québec. We find that the model captures the spatial variability and seasonal effects and, to a lesser extent, the hour-by-hour or day-to-day temporal variability for a fixed location. The model at both the 3 km and the 1 km resolution struggled to capture high-frequency temporal variability and showed large variabilities in correlation and bias from site to site. When comparing the biases and correlation at a site-wide scale, the 3 km domain showed slightly higher correlation for carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2), and nitric oxide (NO), while ozone (O 3), sulfur dioxide (SO 2), and PM 2.5 showed slight increases in correlation at the 1 km domain. Moult and migration are energetically demanding and require adequate nutrition. In some species, individuals may interrupt their fall migration to moult at discrete stopover locations outside of their breeding grounds (i.e., moult-migration) leading to competing nutritional demands for moult and migration. Here, we use DNA barcoding of fecal samples to compare the diet of moulting and actively migrating (post-moult) Swainson's Thrushes (Catharus ustulatus) and Tennessee Warblers (Leiothlypis peregrina) during their fall migration stopover at a large urban greenspace in Montreal, Canada. Diet differed according to moult status, species, and seasonality. Swainson's Thrushes had a broad diet with frequent detections of both insects and berry-producing shrubs; while detections in Tennessee Warblers' diets were mainly arthropods. For both species, more actively migrating individuals consumed fleshy-fruiting plants than moulting individuals. A higher proportion of moulting birds consumed arthropods compared to active migrants, due to either arthropod availability or a dietary preference for proteinaceous foods to grow feathers. Both species and moult classes consumed more native plants than non-native plants later in the season. We show the importance of managing urban greenspaces with native plants and diverse food sources that can provide for the different dietary needs of migratory birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sarcopenia and anemia are common complications in patients with Crohn's Disease (CD). However, few studies have shown the association between sarcopenia and hemoglobin levels in CD patients. This retrospective study aimed to explore such association in Chinese patients with CD. Two hundred and twelve adult CD inpatients who underwent computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations from July 2019 to December 2021 were included in the study. Sarcopenia was defined according to the cutoff value of skeletal muscle index of lumbar spine 3 (SMI-L3) (< 44.77cm2/m2 for males and < 32.5cm2/m2 for females). The CD patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of sarcopenia. Clinical data, hemoglobin levels, and other laboratory data were retrospectively collected. The association between hemoglobin levels and sarcopenia was analyzed by univariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Sarcopenia occurred in 114 CD patients (53.8%). Compared to patients without sarcopenia, patients with sarcopenia had a lower proportion of L1 (30.7% vs. 45.8%, p = 0.032) and B1 classification (58.8% vs. 72.4%, p = 0.037). Patients with sarcopenia had significantly lower levels of hemoglobin (Hb) (116.5 ± 22.8 vs. 128.1 ± 21.0, p < 0.001). The prevalence of sarcopenia increased with the decrease in hemoglobin level (p for trend < 0.05). Linear regression analysis showed that hemoglobin levels were associated with SMI-L3 (β = 0.091, p = 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression analysis found that higher hemoglobin levels (OR:0.944; 95% CI: 0.947,0.998; p = 0.036) were independent protective factors for sarcopenia. Groupe Intervention Vidéo (GIV) is an independent artist run center in Montreal "dedicated to the promotion of videos created by women (in its most inclusive definition) by distributing and presenting them" (GIV website) At the crossroads of longevity, consistency, commitment, and the precarity that accompanies most forms of feminist labor, GIV is one of the most important "accidental" archives of feminist organizing and expression in Quebec. Their curatorial practices resist any archiving separated from the practice of everyday life. This article focuses on the thirty-year history of Vidéo des Femmes dans le Parc (VFP), GIV's annual public and outdoor screening of new works from an open call. Highway access provides important advantages for firms and households, generating powerful incentives to develop new built areas through the conversion of vacant land. Based on the case study of the expansion of Highway 30 on Montréal's South Shore region between 2000 and 2019, this paper investigates how new highway infrastructure impacts the construction of new industrial and commercial buildings on individual parcels. Using a panel dataset, an event study model is developed to estimate the impact of the proximity to highway access ramps on the probability of construction. Results show that highway infrastructure increases the probability of construction of new industrial and commercial buildings, even if public authorities aim to limit such possibilities by legal constraints and laws.
