This paper introduces a data-based approach as an alternative way to help teachers formulate decisions about the validity of test accommodations for students with LD. Three rationales for the approach are provided: (a) an inadequate research base to guide decision-making; (b) the heterogeneity of the LD population; and (c) problems with teachers' use of subjective judgment. Well-controlled studies on test accommodations are too scarce to draw firm conclusions about effects for the group of students labeled learning disabled (LD). Moreover, in light of the heterogeneity of learning disabilities, the individual, rather than the LD label, may be the more appropriate unit for deciding which test accommodations preserve the validity of test scores for students with LD. In this paper, we provide a rationale for a data-based approach to help teachers formulate decisions about the validity of test accommodations for individual students with LD. Then we describe an objective assessment process teachers may use in determining valid test accommodations. We conclude with recommendations for practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the United States, the threat of HIV/AIDS to African American women's health has become the focus of much concern. This paper describes a federally funded community-based program that provides services to African American women at risk for HIV/AIDS in Nashville, Tennessee. The program provides a culturally relevant set of interventions specific to crack cocaine users aimed at reducing substance use and HIV/AIDS risk behaviors. The model is important for the continued development of culturally relevant interventions aimed at reducing the disproportionate rates of HIV/AIDS within the African American community by ensuring treatment access to all populations. Three levels of prevention and intervention in the area of mathematics are addressed: (a) primary prevention focusing on universal design, (b) secondary prevention focusing on adaptations, and (c) tertiary prevention focusing on intensive and explicit contextualization of skills-based instruction. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss principles of prevention and intervention in the area of mathematics. First, we identify research-based principles associated with primary prevention. Second, we turn our attention to secondary prevention, with a focus on prereferral intervention. We identify principles that serve to differentiate primary and secondary prevention and specify instructional variables that are promising for use within a secondary prevention mode. Finally, we discuss intervention. We identify principles of effective intervention, which include individually referenced decision making, instructional intensity, and deliberate contextualization of skills-based instruction. A few international nurses from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States and Great Britain had the unique honour of sharing a magical and creative nursing experience this year. They were specially invited participants to an international nursing conference convened by a conference planning committee consisting of members of the nursing staff of the Vanderbilt University Hospital and nursing faculty of the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. The theme of the conference was "The Destiny of Nursing: Interaction of the Discipline With Society." The conference was held in Nashville, Tennessee, during April 7-11, 1986.

Numerous studies of residential propinquity as a factor in mate selection have appeared during the past twenty years. These studies seem to have established the general conclusion that the urban American tends to marry someone who lives within a fairly limited distance of his or her home. When these studies are examined more closely, however, numerous variations are found which raise questions about the meaning of the findings beyond this general conclusion. It is a major purpose of this paper to examine the implications of some of these variations in the earlier studies of propinquity. The discussion will be divided into four parts: (1) a consideration of the findings of a recent study of propinquity in Nashville, Tennessee; (2) some observations about the methods of data gathering and analysis used in propinquity studies; (3) consideration of the value of the collected findings of studies of propinquity; and (4) suggestions for further research. The study of Nashville followed the general design used in earlier propinquity studies. The sample studied consisted of all of those Negro couples and one-half of those white couples applying for marriage licenses in Davidson County, Tennessee, during 1950 who met the following criterion: at least one member of the couple gave a "non-institutional" address within the area covered by the census tracts of metropolitan Nashville.

Misztal is senior lecturer in the Faculty of Arts at Griffith University, Brisbane in Queensland. She is the author of "Action on AIDS." Rabinovitch is a doctoral student in sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently working on his dissertation project, which focuses on the gendered semiotics of democracy in today's antiglobalization movement.

The article discusses the highlights of the 139th Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) with a theme entitled "Diversity--The Foundation of Fisheries and the AFS: Are We Gaining Ground?" held in Nashville, Tennessee from August 3 to September 3, 2009. This article uses qualitative case study methodology to examine why the racial composition of magnet schools in Nashville, Tennessee, has shifted to predominantly African American in the aftermath of unitary status. The article compares the policy contexts and parents' reasons for choosing magnet schools at two points in time—under court order and under unitary status. Social networks, choice sets, and “closer to home” student assignment policies are identified as key influences on the changing demographics of magnet schools in a postunitary status environment. Summary. We conducted a retrospective survey of our experience with central venous access devices (CVADs) implanted in children with haemophilia seen at the Vanderbilt Hemostasis–Thrombosis Clinic from 1986 to 2000. Following discussion with parents on the merits and risks associated with the use of CVADs for immune tolerance induction or factor prophylaxis, catheters were inserted under sterile technique in the operating room. One nurse provided demonstration and teaching about catheter care and access. Thirty central venous catheters were inserted in 22 children. Our survey revealed that the two most common complications associated with central venous catheters were bacteraemia and thrombosis. We found a sepsis rate of 0.30/1000 catheter-days or one episode of bacteraemia for every 3346 days of catheter use. The thrombosis rate of our cohort was 0.13/1000 catheter-days or one episode of thrombosis for every 7529 days of catheter use. Uncomplicated venous access is essential in children with severe haemophilia who require prophylaxis or immune tolerance induction. While infection was the most common complication observed in our series, we experienced a lower overall infection rate than several reported series. Catheter thrombosis and subsequent obstruction may occur as a result of intraluminal fibrin deposits. We conclude that the use of implantable central venous catheters is an effective method for accessing children with haemophilia. We accept that the benefits of CVADs in the treatment of paediatric haemophilia patients outweigh the previously documented risks. Despite mixed expectations generated by existing theories and evidence, this analysis documents clear racial differences in urban neighboring behavior. Using data from a survey of Nashville, Tennessee, residents, we show that blacks interact with their neighbors more often than whites do, and in a greater variety of ways. The only noteworthy similarity between the two groups is the positive impact of neighboring on feelings of community affect. Overall, our results support the view that neighbor relations - like other kinds of informal participation - have helped blacks cope with constrained social opportunities and provided them with access to resources unavailable through formal institutional channels. This article discusses consequences of community context for residential mobility. Of central interest is the degree to which properties of urban neighborhoods determine whether their inhabitants move or stay. The article reviews a series of conceptual issues that have emerged in, and to some degree have thwarted, prior cross-level studies of community context. A simple causal model is developed to analyze factors associated with residential mobility. The data used in this study were obtained by means of a telephone survey sponsored by the city's planning department and conducted in May and June 1987, particularly for Nashville, Tennessee. Vanderbilt University sociology graduate students and employees of the Urban Observator, a private research firm, worked as staff members on the project. Two different types of mobility measures were identified through this project which are supposed to serve as dependent variables in the analysis. The first is a survey item about mobility thoughts, designed to tap any preexisting inclination toward movement. The second measure captures actual mobility during the year after the survey. The weighted data reveal that one-third of the Nashvillians surveyed had thought about moving shortly before the interview and that roughly one-fifth actually changed residences during the 12 months following.

The ethnic community and compensatory theories of Black social participation are compared by analyzing affective correlates (political efficacy and self-esteem) of participation for 712 residents of Nashville, Tennessee in 1969. The instrumental-expressive typology of participation is utilized in addition to total participation. Participation and the affective variables are significantly correlated for Blacks, but only weakly correlated for Anglos, lending support to both theories. The relationship between participation, the affective variables, and the controlled background factors is briefly discussed, and problems and directions for future research are outlined.
