This article highlights the work of Coretta Scott King in the struggle for governmental guarantees to employment in the 1970s. In the two decades after her husband’s death, Scott King devoted herself to achieving governmental guarantees to employment and disentangling militarism and violence from the economy. For her, this was the continuation of the civil rights movement. Considering the efforts of Scott King highlights the class content of the long civil rights struggle after the 1960s and the contested evolution of neoliberalism. Further, focusing on the unsuccessful efforts of Scott King also reveals the difficulty of achieving legislation to ameliorate the crisis of unemployment, and how racism and patriarchy structured labor markets during this period. Background Obesity currently affects more than a third of the United States population and is associated with increased surgical complications. Compared to all other subspecialties, colorectal surgery is the most affected by the increasing trend in obese surgical patients. Operative time has been found to have the greatest impact on hospital costs and physician workload. This study was conducted to determine whether obesity has a direct impact on operative time in elective colorectal procedures using a high-powered, nationally representative patient sample. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 45,362 patients who underwent open and laparoscopic ileocolic resections, partial colectomies, and low pelvic anastomoses using American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data from 2005-2009. Operative time was the main outcome variable, whereas body mass index (BMI) was the main independent variable. BMI was divided into three classes as follows: normal (<25), overweight and/or obese (25-35), and morbidly obese (>35). A univariate linear model was used to analyze the relationship while controlling for confounding factors such as demographics and preoperative conditions. Statistical significance was established at P ≤ 0.05. Results Morbidly obese patients were found to have longer operative times than did normal patients across each individual colorectal procedure (P < 0.001), ranging from a mean difference of 17.8 min for open ileocolic resections to 56.6 min for laparoscopic low pelvic anastomoses with colostomies. Conclusions BMI, as an objective measure of obesity, is a direct, statistically significant independent predictor of operative time across elective colorectal procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Supreme Court ruled that the use of GPS tracking by law enforcement is not a Fourth Amendment search.

This article explores several issues surrounding the American Psychological Association's accredited doctoral training of clinical psychologists. There is a movement to combat the use of psychiatric drugs with psycho-social treatments. However, as will be examined, such treatments seem to not work well. The article reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's draft guidance, Patient-Reported Outcome Measures: Use in Medical Product Development to Support Labeling Claims, has marked the formal positioning of the agency's stance regarding patient reported outcomes (PROs) in clinical trials. The guidance is an important document in that it provides a single point of reference for the agency's thinking on the topic.

During the ICEFISH cruise of 2004 13 specimens of the fish family Liparidae (Scorpaeniformes) were collected from Burdwood Bank and near South Georgia. These specimens, with the addition of three more from the King Edward Point Laboratory of the British Antarctic Survey, represent nine species. Two of these are new and are described herein: Careproctus stigmatogenus new species and C. maculosus new species; the second specimen of C. minimus Andriashev and Stein is reported and described, specimens of C. georgianus Lönnberg, C. falklandicus (Lönnberg), C. ?pallidus (Vaillant), Paraliparis copei gibbericeps Andriashev, P. gracilis Norman, and P. tetrapteryx Andriashev and Neelov are reported, and live color of C. georgianus, C. falklandicus, and P. tetrapteryx is described and shown. Liparis adiastolus, a previously undescribed species from the coasts of Oregon and Washington, northwest United States, is described. The new species has probably been consistently confused with Liparis rutteri, which has a more northerly distribution. Liparis adiastolus is clearly distinguishable from all similar species in having 41-70 pyloric caeca, 35-39 vertebrae, 30-33 dorsal-fin rays, 32-35 pectoral-fin rays, disk 67-77% HL, and other distinctive characters. In addition to describing the new species, we select a lectotype of L. rutteri, provide an expanded diagnosis for that species, and discuss the confusion previously existing with regard to its identification. This instrumental case study using the embedded single-case study design was conducted at a large midwestern university. Data collection included documents, descriptive statistics, and interviews. The themes of remaining, retiring, and returning appeared as patterns during data analysis. As universities experience the trend toward longer working lifespans, it is important that HRD practitioners include age in diversity discussions. Along with this, career development and training and development opportunities need to be reexamined.

In Ohio, there has been a recent but concerted effort from the state health department down through the local health departments to complete community health assessment studies for the prioritization and delivery of health services in their respective communities. At the same time, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations has been actively encouraging hospitals to assess targeted communities prior to the delivery of community-based services. In a changing health care system that demands greater emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention, new alliances are born of necessity, with collaborative products and benefits to all involved. A local health department and a community hospital in south central Ohio that was jointly owned by the city and county, in consultation with a neighboring state university, embarked on a 1 1/2-year study to define, prioritize, and plan service delivery for the community through Health Watch 2000. Six priority health areas based on national health objectives were determined along with subsequent health planning recommendations, leading to the ultimate goal of healthy people in healthy communities. According to the author the proposed Exchange Program is politically feasible, negotiable, inexpensive and will meet the security requirements.

The discussion method is a teaching strategy commonly used by nurse educators in a variety of educational settings. However, relatively unknown to nursing education is a unique discussion teaching strategy: the deliberative discussion method. The deliberative discussion method was developed by the National Issues Forums Institute for the sole purpose of creating a means to engage people and communities to dialogue with one another. In essence, a deliberative discussion is a shared inquiry that asks participants to talk through and weigh the costs and consequences of a variety of options of solutions to a public problem. At the heart of deliberation is the group's willingness to work through the conflicts, to accept the consequences of their choices, and to establish grounds for action. Pathogenic caliciviruses of the genus Vesivirus circulate in oceanic ecosystems and spread to and among terrestrial mammals. Isolation of Vesivirus from natural and laboratory infections in humans led to this investigation of Vesivirus seroprevalence and viremia. Sera from four groups were tested for antibodies to Vesivirus as follows: blood donors whose units were cleared for donation, blood donors whose units were not accepted for donation solely because of elevated blood liver alanine aminotransferase (ALT) concentrations, patients with clinical hepatitis of unknown but suspected infectious cause, and patients with clinical hepatitis of unknown cause but associated with blood transfusion or dialysis. Additionally, sera were tested for Vesivirus genome by three methods: dot-blot and two reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) methods. The calculated seroprevalence against Vesivirus virions within these groups (N = 765) was 12%, 21%, 29%, and 47%, respectively (P < 0.001 for group differences). Additionally, 11 (9.8%) of 112 sera tested yielded RT-PCR amplicons that by nucleotide sequence were distinct from each other and related to known Vesivirus. These data indicate that some blood donors in the population tested have serologic evidence of previous Vesivirus infection and some also have Vesivirus viremia.
